Because we're in a series called God of Miracles, there will be miracles this month. There will be, I mean, financial miracles. There will be emotional miracles. There will be mental miracles. There will be physical miracles that take place in this room. We, I don't know about y'all, but I've actually been a witness of a few miracles personally and outwardly. I mean, when I was pastoring, man, we literally were caught off guard by a man who was on hospice and they called the church and it was like, yeah, I need the pastor to know that my brother's on hospice. And so he has not walked in a few months, but we're going to wheel him to church because we don't know how long he has to live. And I'm like, fam, why would you put that kind of pressure on your boy? And so I thought that they would just kind of come in and like, just sit down and just kind of enjoy service. But sis, listen, they waited for me to come out

the office to make sure I seen him and to say I don't know what you preaching about today but I sure hope he can get healed and now and I and I immediately turned around and went back in my office and I began to pray and I said Lord I remember when I said yes to doing this I said to you I didn't want to do this unless I could see miracles signs and wonders and so I said to myself self we gonna go out here and we just gonna believe God that something crazy is gonna happen I went to my worship leader and I said yo Ryan it's funny my worship leader name was Ryan I said Ryan I need you to sing healer today and when you get to that part nothing is impossible I want you to just keep repeating that and we got

to healer and we got to nothing is impossible for you i got there and i'm like oh i'm ready now i feel it so i went up to the front and they rolled him to the front and my flesh was scurred y'all i was but i'm in faith I'm scared though I'm like yo what's gonna happen and all I know is I said I don't need nobody in the church praying if you don't have faith whoever has faith I want you to lock in with my faith and let's pray that a miracle will be his today and the moral of the story is That a miracle will be his today. And the moral of the story is.

All I know is I had my eyes closed. I was praying and I'm singing and I opened up my eyes. And this dude done got out his wheelchair. And starts walking around the room. And it scared the mess out of me. But from that day forth, I said to myself, I will never doubt what God can do.

So I'm saying, there will be miracles. There will be physical miracles. There will be emotional miracles. There will be financial miracles. There will be mental miracles that take place this month. Starting with last week. But somebody going to get a miracle today. Come on, clap your hands if you believe it.

Go with me to the book of Matthew chapter 8 we're still continuing our exegetical walk through the book of Matthew as we are taking a really deep dive into the miracles of Jesus all month of June and last

week who enjoyed hearing about the leper? Amen. We're going to take it up a notch. Matthew chapter 8, beginning at verse number 5, and it reads like this again what you will see on the screen will be from the esv version i'm going to read from the niv for context here it is it says when jesus had entered capernaum a centurion came to him asking for help lord he said my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly. Jesus said to him, shall I come and heal him? And the centurion replied, Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servant will be healed.

For I myself am a man under authority with soldiers under me. I tell this one, go. And he goes. And that one, come. And he comes. And I say to my servant, do this. And he does it. And when Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,

Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west and will take their places at the feast with Abraham Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven but the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth I want to draw your attention back up to verse number six. Lord, he said, my servant lies at home, paralyzed, suffering terribly. Hold the mic up. Amen. Hallelujah. My servant lies at home, paralyzed, suffering terribly. My servant from Atlanta by the name of TLC. And they prophesied by titling a song the title of my message this morning. What about your friends? It didn't work like I thought it would a centurion came to Jesus and he said to Jesus my servant what about your friends father do it in Jesus name amen have a seat

family for the first for the past two decades a group of neuroscientists from China and Europe have dedicated countless hours researching the brain's cognitive responses to friendships and relationships. In this study of 8 to 25 year olds, these researchers examined the link between friendship quality and the structure of the social brain network. Together, these findings that link stimuli in the brain to friendships can be interpreted to suggest that friendships affect how individuals process the world around them. However, in their findings, they immediately switch their focus from the psychology of friendships to the psychology of care. The focus now is to study what makes people care and what happens to people when they know someone cares.

This morning I'd like to draw your attention to a thought concerning your very existence. And this thought is connected to a statement that will hopefully illuminate for you why you are where you are. Here's the statement. Your life is the sum total of what you've allowed God to do in and through you. I'm going to say it again. Your life is the sum total Of what you've allowed God to do in and through you. I'm going to say it again.

Your life is the sum total. Of what you've allowed God to do in and through you. Okay. Likewise. Your life is also the result of someone else's care for you. Right. So you got this two pronged thing. someone else's care for you. Right? So you got this two-pronged thing. Number one, your life is about what you've allowed God to do in you.

But then also your life is about how someone else cared about you. Y'all following me? Here we go. Here's what this means. You and I are all recipients of God's grace but we're also a direct reflection of our obedience and or disobedience to God I'm just going to give you the bad news first all right you and I are recipients of the grace of God that's the good news but the bad news is we also are a splitting image of our obedience or disobedience to God

what am I saying sometimes when you look at your life you should exclude the enemy and talk to because if we are honest most of the things we call the devil is not the devil it is the fact that God gave us an instruction and we did not carry out the instruction it is the fact that God said go left but we decided we wanted to go right it is the fact that God said not him but you wanted to it's the fact that God said not her and you it it is it is the reflection of the disobedience and the obedience in our lives now here's the good part somewhere the way, perhaps before we were even born, somebody was praying and now you are the manifestation of someone else's promise from God. I don't know if it was grandmama Nim, I don't know if it was granddad Nim, I don't know if it was granddad Nim. I don't know if it was your mom or your dad. But you are actually the walking manifestation of someone else's promise from God. God promised somebody on your behalf and poof, now you here.

And since God is not a man that he should lie, nor is he the son of man that he shall repent and since his word will not return to him void but it will accomplish that which it pleases and shall prosper anything and everything where to what you were sent we should all be full of thanksgiving because somebody was praying and God was listening. Somebody was praying and God was listening. Now, I grew up coaching. Any coaching? Five of y'all?

Amen. You can't just join in. You got to be born in. I'm coaching. I grew up coaching and back in the day, there was a song you got to be born in. I'm coaching. I grew up coaching. And back in the day, there was a song that the old mothers used to sing.

And it went a little something like this. They used to sing something that says, somebody prayed for me. Had me on their mind. Took a little time and prayed for me. Then they would yell out, and I'm so glad they prayed. And I'm so glad they prayed and I'm so glad they prayed and then everybody would say I'm so glad they prayed for me and I pray that you are glad that somebody prayed for you. Today in our text Matthew is given his second account of yet another very specific miracle

after Jesus heals the leper he continues on his journey and ends up in a very familiar place he ends up on the northern shores of the sea of Galilee in the city of Capernaum now Capernaum for you bible scholars already know, has a lot of significance to Jesus. Capernaum for Jesus is a very special place for a few reasons. Number one, it is actually where Jesus first began his ministry after relocating from Nazareth. Secondly, it's also the place where he called John, James, Peter, and Andrew to be his disciples. So Jesus is in a very familiar place, a very comfortable place, getting ready to do what he does in his city. And the Bible declares that Jesus gets into Capernaum and a centurion comes to him asking for help. Now this means nothing when you hear a centurion comes

and asks for help. Let me help you understand why this means everything. Because a centurion is really a Roman soldier. And because he's a Roman soldier, he's a Gentile. Jesus is a Jew. Now here's another reason why this is important because the centurion should not be in Capernaum okay now we got a Roman soldier coming up to Jesus who when he's actually the enemy of Jesus why because Jesus is a Jew Romans Romans oppressed the Jews. So he is coming to someone who would normally be his subject. And the reason why the Jews loved the Messiah was because they thought the Messiah was coming to drive out the Romans. However, this Roman happens to get close enough to Jesus to

ask for help. Y'all are not ready for this, right? I'm telling y'all, y'all ain't. Watch this. However, just like the leper, there was something very peculiar and special about this particular centurion. Now, without text even alluding to this, we can logically deduce that this particular centurion. Now without text even alluding to this. We can logically deduce. That this particular centurion. Had not obviously just heard about Jesus. He knew something about Jesus. Can I back it up?

The centurion is not even supposed to be coming to Jesus. Let alone have knowledge of who Jesus is. Because Romans were not only enemies of Jews, they were also known to be non-believers. But non-believers don't approach Jesus like the way this centurion chose to approach Jesus. He comes up on Jesus and he says something that made me throw my Bible across the office. He says, Lord. Wait a minute. Can I pause and tell the Christians in the room something

this is why you cannot be offended by people who don't believe how you believe because even people who tell you they don't believe know who he is even people who you call non-believers know exactly who Jesus is they just choose not to acknowledge who he is oh but they know oh but they know Jesus too cold for them not to know he's doing too many miracles for them not to know he's healing too many people for them not to know. Oh they know. So. Watch this. He does. He does this.

And it messed me up because. He approaches Jesus. The way he's supposed to be approached. He approaches him. With the utmost respect. Saying. You are Lord. That means you cover everything. And I know they might not believe. Oh, but I heard that you was doing some stuff.

And now I need some stuff done for me. And so he approaches Jesus. Now watch this this Roman soldier comes to Jesus he calls him Lord this to me indicates he must have been a closet believer or something he goes out of his way to travel to see Jesus to ask Jesus for a favor. Now watch this. Are y'all ready? He does all this and then he makes a request.

But his request is really what threw me off. Ah, I got to bag it up one more time because I don't think y'all get it. This is a Roman soldier who traveled to Capernaum to meet Jesus and ask him for a favor. Now, let me tell you why this is significant. Because he was not supposed to be associated with the Jews. Which means he put his life on the line. Which means he puts his life on the line, which means he puts his reputation on the line, which means he puts his ranking on the line to ask Jesus for a favor. But are y'all ready to go to the next level? He did all that and he did not ask for anything for himself. He put his life on the line.

He put his reputation on the line. He put his rankings on the line just to ask Jesus for something on somebody else's behalf. Y'all quiet in here. Watch this. He does all of this just to ask Jesus for a favor for a friend

I know the bible says that that his servant was paralyzed but back in those days Roman centurions weren't allowed to have families I gotta give you context they weren't allowed to have families so the only people they could get close to was the people who they had as subjects one of the main people that they always will be close to is the people who serve them directly so the only reason he's coming to Jesus

is because his servant is not really just his servant he's actually his friend he does all of this and he asked Jesus for a favor for his friend someone he really cares about ladies and gentlemen I'd like to introduce you to a type of faith I'm not sure you knew you needed. This type of faith is called surrogate faith. I wish I had some saved people in the building.

I only came this morning to introduce you to a type of faith. See, it's impossible for me to tell you hey this series is all about you increasing your faith and I don't explain to you there's a part of faith that you didn't know you needed but I need to tell you oh you need this faith this faith is called surrogate faith surrogate faith is a faith that believes God on behalf of someone else. And it does you no good to increase your faith and your faith doesn't leave room for intercessory faith. I know you've heard about intercessory prayer where you stand in the gap for someone via prayer,

but I'm talking about intercessory faith where you know that you are around people who really don't have faith to believe God for themselves. But oh, you such a good friend that you can step in front and say, you don't even got to have enough faith. I got enough for both of us. Talking about surrogate faith. Now watch this. In Mark chapter 2 though, we see yet another paralyzed man.

I feel like running off this stage. We see another paralyzed man who has to get to Jesus. But he's paralyzed. So he can't move. So the Bible then says that some friends gathered around him to carry him to Jesus. And then Jesus sees the man, but what he sees in the man is not what moves him. What he sees in the friends is what moves him. And he says, and I quote, because of their faith. Because of their faith.

Because of their faith. See, when Jesus saw the man, he said, because of their faith, you're going to be healed. And then I got to thinking, Lord, send me some people into my life who cannot just carry me to a club, who cannot just carry me to brunch, who cannot just carry me to happy hour. But Lord, send me some friends who can carry me to you when I need it. And I know Atlanta is the city of brunches. It's the city of hookah. I don't care if you're going for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can find hookah and a DJ. And so some of us are going to leave church today i done stepped i done stepped all up in your

business i i ain't judging you no fam i judge you all i'm saying is some of us are gonna leave church today and we going right to brunch but i want to know do you got some friends in your life who can do more than carry you to brunch? Do you got some friends in your life who can do more than carry you to happy hour? Do you got some friends in your life who can do more than carry you out to a party? Do you have friends that when it's time for it to be Jesus, they can take you there? I'm just asking here's why that's important because miracles do not only show up in the form of provision but miracles also show up in the form of people I wish I don't have time see see see see the reason why you got to come to church

is because some things you're asking God for he's not going to respond directly to you he's going to use a vessel he's going to use a conduit he's going to use somebody else who you can relate to a little bit more so have you ever been in church and you going through stuff and you praying about stuff and pastor philip start preaching and instead of saying amen, you say stuff like, how did he know? He is all up in my business. It's because while you're complaining that God is not talking back to you, you need to be quiet because he's talking to the person you're submitted to. Now, if you're not submitted to anybody, you're missing some messages because miracles don't always show up looking like miracles sometimes miracles

show up on two feet and two hands and I won't be unto you if you're a person who I know new friends if you like I don't really do people you better learn to do people because miracles come in the form of people and as much as you pushing people away maybe God is waiting for you to open up your heart again I hear you in here Holy Spirit maybe God is working for you to open up your mind again maybe God is waiting for you to trust again maybe God is waiting for you not to

be so skeptical maybe your miracle is waiting on you to be open to a relationship listen to me my question to you is, what about your friends? You come to church every Sunday. What about your friends? What about your family? What about your coworkers? What about the people you said you care about see we're reading a story about a centurion who had the faith to come to Jesus on

behalf of someone he actually cared about but please don't tell me a centurion has more faith than a believer but here lies the problem the problem is you can't get surrogate faith until you get some personal faith and I'm concerned that people are yoked up to you and you can't carry them further than the front door so what happens is instead of carrying them to Jesus you carry their secrets to somebody else I'm in the room instead of

carrying them to Jesus you it's like those intimate moments where they thought they could trust you and they don't even know that you done spread their business to two or three people they don't even really rock with so I'm like I be your hold up before you can talk about surrogate faith, you got to make sure the people got faith on their own. And newsflash, my Bible says, without faith, that means you can shout, you can jump forever, forever. You can lift your hands, you can slob you can run you can speak a tongue but if you do not have faith all of that didn't please God it pleased you I don't have time but I want to ask you what about your friends see i'm about to give you three types of friends you need

but not only are these types of friends you need this is the type of friend you should be are y'all ready now i don't know what you got going on in your circle all i know is you showed up and the Lord told me to talk to you about friends. So some miracles is about to start happening right now. Here's why. Cause I'm about to illuminate the type of friends you need. When I illuminate the type of friends you need, you should go in your phone book and delete them. If they ain't that, I know y'all ain't gonna do that, but it sounds good. Are y'all ready? Because here it is. We believe God and talk to God about everything else but our friends. It's like we don't ever be like, you know what, God? I met somebody at work today, and I just would really love if you would illuminate to me should I get close to this person or not because what we try to do in the name of being friendly is connect

ourselves to everybody but sometimes you're only connected to people because the magnetism in both of y'all's life is drama and so it's like I was talking to somebody over lunch and the fact that they had drama mixed with the fact that I had some drama meant that we could have some drama together so now we friends and we only been knowing each other for two weeks and now you tell them your whole life story and then get mad when they ain't your friend no more and the whole office know about it let's not shout and jump and forget the fact that you need godly friends. Are y'all ready? Here it is. Number one, first, you need fixers. We're going to run in just a minute, I promise y'all. You need fixers. Here's a fixer. Fixers are people who help you see you. Fixers are people. See, that's

why y'all don't want fixers. I felt it all in the room. I don't want nobody to help me see me, boo boo. I got this. Fixers are people who help you see you. They help you also acknowledge and address, then assist you with your blind spots. Fixers see. And I want to do a PSA in 2819 this morning. We all got blind spots. And if you don't think you got blind spots, it's probably because you ain't got fixers in your life. Okay?

Now here's the key. If you don't have fixers, it means you have enablers. It's tight, but it's right. If you don't got fixers, it means you have enablers. When you got people in your life who know you're wrong and don't tell you you're wrong, they enable you being wrong. But a fixer is going to help you acknowledge, address, and then assist you with how to get rid of these blind spots. You need a fixer. I don't see nobody in their phone. Yep, you need to delete her. She's an an enabler i feel you in the room number two you need fighters see no never mind never mind see i knew i heard everybody in here say oh i got some fighters no give you no boo boo not them type of

fighters the type of fighters I'm talking about are the people who protect you and also push you fighters will sense in the spirit that you're going through something and they will war in prayer for you uh-huh now watch this if you don't have fighters you might have referees what is a referee a referee is somebody who just sits in your life and wait till life knocks you out before they step in.

No, I don't need no refs to stand by and watch me get punched. I need some fighters who can kind of see when I'm not the same, see when my mood is off, see when I'm going through something, see when I'm linked up with something. I need some fighters who can see and go to war for me in prayer you need fighters and then the last characteristic of friends you should have is you need friends who are faithful not faithful faithful here it is see faithful people are people that are full

of faith they believe in you they champion you they celebrate you they see you in a way you probably don't see yourself they see what's ahead of you they see greatness in you they call you to go higher than what you've been settling for there they see your faith and you are you have faith reserves in them they know when they need to believe for you now watch this if you don't have faithful friends you probably have leeches

leeches are people who come to suck the life out of you and it's quiet in here. Because people are wondering. Are they the leech? See. You're not always the good friend. You're not always the centurion. Sometimes you're the servant the centurion. Sometimes you're the servant at home paralyzed

and you need somebody to go to Jesus on your behalf. Now watch this. The text reveals to us that in order to overcome our paralysis, that we must be connected to the right people. Who in your life is going to Jesus on your behalf? Who in your life is going to Jesus on your behalf? Now, here's the good part.

This is what I really came for. When you answer the question, who in my life is going to Jesus on my behalf? The only way this question makes sense is when you realize, recognize, and accept the fact that you have paralysis. It is only when you realize you need somebody because maybe your legs don't work like they used to maybe your heart doesn't work like it used to maybe your mind doesn't work like it used to maybe your finances ain't popping like they used to. You have to admit you have paralysis in some area of your life. Sometimes heartbreak paralyzes you. Disappointment paralyzes you.

Rejection paralyzes you. Insecurities paralyze you. What do you mean by it paralyzes you insecurities paralyze you what do you mean by it paralyzes me it makes you either unable to move or not able to move as fast see some of you in here it ain't that you can't move but you don't move as fast as you used to you don't pray as quick as you used to you don't worship as hard as you used to because the enemy comes to steal kill and destroy but can I tell you what he does more than killing stealing and destroying the enemy is a pickpocketer he will pickpocket you and you won't know something is gone until you reach for it the moment you need faith and you reach for it, you realize I don't have it anymore.

The moment you need trust, you reach for it and realize, man, what? I don't have it anymore. Because the enemy, through broken relationships, pickpocketed you. And you come in here and you yell. And you come in here and you yell. And you come in here and you jump up and down. And you come in here and you lift your hands. But the reality of it is you've been pickpocketed. The reality of it is

something was taken from you. And you just now realized it. And what do you do with a paralyzed faith? A faith that doesn't move. What do you do when you want to believe God with everything in you, but it's hard? What do you do when you want to be in worship with everything in you, but it's hard? And I know what, I get it, I understand. It's hard for you to lift your hands and sing songs when you got bills.

It's hard for you to escape when you know in about an hour and a half, I'm going right back to my reality. Oh, I hear you. I hear you in the room. It's like, man, I'm coming to get this fix, this feel good, but I already know in about an hour and a half, I'm going to have to go right back to that. What do you do with that? I want to submit to you, you need people in your life

to have surrogate faith, to go to Jesus on your behalf. And here's what makes church necessary. Because when you don't got friends in your life, I feel like running, who can take you to Jesus. You come to a church that's all about community. And I promise you, it's at least 15, 20 people in here that got enough faith for them and you.

So this is why the Bible says forsake not. This is why God was not concerned that you came to church. God was concerned that you had community. That you had people to do life with. That's what God was concerned with. People in your life to do life with. The Bible says he takes the lonely and sets them in family. The Bible says that when thy mother and father forsake you,

then I take you up. The Bible is full of types of shadows where he steps in and becomes everything that you did not have. And because I'm a preacher and I love to keep to the integrity of the text let me jump to this new covenant here's why the centurion is really important because he is a shadowing type of you and I you too were an enemy you too were a non-believer you too owed a debt that you could not pay And God knew it, so he sent his son Jesus to die on behalf of your sins. That's the real picture of surrogate faith. My question to you this morning is, what about your friends? I did all of that research to show you at the top of this message that friends affect how you see life.

They affect how you do life. life and the enemy would want nothing more than for you to lean into and lay in all of the disappointment and all of the hurt and all of the they weren't there and all of the they let me down because he still has friendships coming your way but you're not open to receive them so you self-sabotage the moment it gets good and you feel it's good you push it away my prayer for you this morning

is that a miracle will be waiting for you at this altar my prayer for you is that you realize you don't need a financial miracle. You need a heart miracle. You need a heart transplant. And then some of y'all need the strength

and the fortitude to have some hard conversations i don't know who i'm talking to but let me help somebody it is not enough just to delete their number you need to confront it I'm afraid that I'm standing in front of a church who's trying to fight battles with their back turned towards it but just like in Exodus God tells the children of Israel if you would just turn and look at your enemy

you will never see them again if you will face it for a day you can defeat it for a lifetime no more running no No more hiding. No more afraid to be vulnerable. No more afraid to love again. No more being afraid to attach yourself to the right people again. Because that wall you built, it may keep you safe for a little bit, but the moment you need to be rescued, it's going to take too much effort to get over your wall.

I don't know who you are, but you are pulling on my spirit. And I cut my message short just for you. You can't afford to do life like you've been doing it. I'm calling you. I'm calling you out. Yeah, you broken hearted. Yeah, you disappointed. Yeah, you broken hearted. Yeah, you disappointed. Yeah, you rejected. Yeah, you insecure.

It don't matter how people affirm you, you still struggle with insecurity. You actually look in the mirror with your beautiful self and believe the lie of the enemy that you're not i'm talking to you who you can't stop scrolling on social media comparing yourself to everybody else i'm talking to you i'm talking to you who've gotten so busy trying to be an entrepreneur and really what you're doing is escapism you're only grinding to keep you from dealing with who you really are

I'm talking to you I came for you this morning we're not going to hide behind the grind we're not going to hide behind the grind. We're not going to hide behind the business. We're not going to hide behind anything else. We're going to come out of hiding and say, that's me. I'm broken. I'm afraid.

I'm confused. I'm insecure. With every head bowed, every eye closed, I need to know who did I come for this morning. If this message is for you, I want you to shoot your hand up right now with urgency. I knew it. Put your down listen to me hear me listen to me because of what God has for you you have to get healed now listen to me no listen listen listen this is hard for you to receive because when you're stuck in that place you don't believe God has nothing for you I'm telling you prophetically that because

God has something great for you you can't afford to stay where you are there is a man coming for you but he doesn't need to get this part of you there is is a woman checking for you, but she doesn't need this part of who you are. She needs you to be whole. She needs you to be healed. There is a job opportunity for you, but you can't walk into this job broken like this because the more money you make, the less pats on the back you're going to get. I'm not telling you what I heard. I'm telling you what I heard I'm telling you what I know you can't afford to do life living how you live

hiding pushing people away self-sabotaging you've been wanting to get into a squad you've been wanting to get into a life group since you've been coming here you're afraid because you don't want people to see the real you Into a squad. You've been willing to get into a life group. Since you've been coming here. You're afraid.

Because you don't want people to see the real you. But this morning. We're going to take the mask off. This morning. We're going to get back to Genesis. And we're going to become naked and unafraid. Unashamed. See my scars.
