Starting point is 00:01:00 there, history lovers. Here's the deal. I'm taking you to seven spots across different continents, and each one is more impossible than the last. Bigger, older, heavier, more precise. By the end, you'll never look at an ancient wall the same way again, and it all kicks off with one stone that makes the whole tidy story fall apart. Lebanon, 2014. German archaeologists are digging in an old quarry near Balbeck when they hit something insane. A single carved block weighing around 1,500 tons. That's ten blue whales squeezed into one rock, and get this, there isn't a single crane on the planet that could lift that thing today, not one. The creepy part? Nobody ever finished it. Somebody started cutting this monster out of the bedrock and then just walked away, leaving it in the dirt,
Starting point is 00:01:46 and we still don't know who carved it, or why. Ready? Let's roll. So let's leave that lonely Lebanese block in the dirt for a minute and rewind the clock. Way back. Pass the Romans, past the Egyptians, past basically everyone you doodled in the margins of your history homework. Our first stop is a quiet hill in southeastern Turkey, sitting over a wide plain like a sleeping giant nobody noticed for 11,000 years. The locals called it Gobeckli Tepe, which roughly means
Starting point is 00:02:30 Potbelly Hill, and for centuries farmers plowed right over the top of it, occasionally cursing the inconvenient rocks poking out of their fields. Turns out those inconvenient rocks were the tops of the oldest monumental architecture on earth, and everybody just kept growing lentils on top of human history. Classic. In 1994, an archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt showed up, took one look at those stones, and basically had a professional meltdown of the best kind. Because what he started pulling out of that hill were enormous T-shaped pillars, some of them five metres tall and weighing up to 10 or 15 tonnes each, arranged in careful rings.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And when the dating came back, it didn't just rewrite the textbook, it set the textbook on fire and danced around the flames. These pillars are around 11,500 years old. Let me put that in perspective so it actually lands. The pyramid of Giza, the thing we treat as the gold, standard of Ancient Impossible is about 4,500 years old. Gobeckli Tepe is roughly 7,000 years older than that. Stonehenge, which we praise endlessly, shows up about 6,000 years late to this party. When the builders of Gobeckley were carving these stones, the last woolly mammoths were
Starting point is 00:03:41 technically still walking around. We were closer in time to the mammoths than to the pharaohs. Now here's where it stops being impressive and starts being genuinely unsettling. We are not talking about a sophisticated kingdom with a tax office and a workforce on payroll. There were no cities yet, no farming, no writing, no pottery, no metal of any kind. The people who built this were hunter-gatherers. The exact same kind of folks our schoolbooks drew wearing furs and chasing deer with pointy sticks. According to the official story we all grew up with, these people were supposed to be wandering around in small bands thinking mainly about lunch. They were absolutely not supposed to be organizing massive construction projects that require feeding, housing, and coordinating hundreds of
Starting point is 00:04:26 workers. That's like discovering your dog filed your taxes. Technically adorable, completely impossible, and now you have some serious questions, and they didn't just stack rough boulders either. The pillars are covered in carvings of lions, wild boars, foxes, scorpions and vultures, all chiseled into hard limestone using nothing but flint tools. Think about that workflow for a second. Your cutting-edge technology is a sharp rock, and you're using it to carve detailed predators into a slightly less sharp rock. With the patience of a saint and the back pain of a thousand chiropractor appointments. Even better, the three main enclosures are laid out so their central pillars form an almost perfect equilateral triangle. No blueprints, no measuring tape, no surveyor in a tiny hat squinting through a level,
Starting point is 00:05:14 just hunter-gatherers casually nailing precision geometry that would make a modern engineering student sweat. Several thousand years before geometry was supposedly a thing anyone wrote down. But the part that really keeps researchers up at night is how the story ends. Gebekli-Tepé wasn't abandoned and forgotten by accident. The builders deliberately buried it. They packed the entire complex with rubble and dirt, on purpose, by hand, and tucked it away like a secret. Imagine pouring generations of labour into the most ambitious project your civilization has ever attempted, and then collectively deciding to hide it under tons of fill so completely that nobody finds it for the next 11 millennia.
Starting point is 00:05:56 We bury time capsules with a couple of newspapers and a yearbook. These people buried an entire temple complex, and recently it's gotten wilder because Gebeckley turned out not to be a one-off. Archaeologists are now uncovering a whole constellation of related sites nearby, a network the Turks called Tash Teppala, including the Erie Karahantepe with its rooms full of carved pillars. so it wasn't one weird genius hill, it was a whole movement. Naturally nobody left a note explaining any of it. Which brings us neatly to our second impossible spot, where ancient people decided that building up into the sky was for amateurs,
Starting point is 00:06:32 and the real flex was digging straight down. Stay in the same neighbourhood of Turkey, drift over to the region of Cappadocia, and you arrive at our next contestant in 1963, courtesy of one of the greatest home renovation accidents in history. A local man is doing some work on his house, knocks down a wall in his basement, and instead of finding more wall, he finds a passage, a tunnel leading into darkness. Now the reasonable human response here is to immediately wall it back up and never speak of it
Starting point is 00:07:01 again. Fortunately for us, curiosity won, and what he had stumbled into was an entire underground city named Derankyu. And when I say city, I am not exaggerating for the views. This place plunges down 18 levels and reaches about 85 metres underground. which is roughly the depth of a 25-story building flipped upside down and stuffed into the earth. At its peak it could shelter as many as 20,000 people. Not 20,000 people standing awkwardly shoulder to shoulder like a packed subway car either. 20,000 people with their livestock, their stables, their food storage, their wineries, their schools and their chapels.
Starting point is 00:07:40 They thought of everything. They even built wineries down there, which tells you everything you need to know about human priorities. Apocalypse outside, invading army on the doorstep, and somebody made absolutely sure the wine cellar made the cut. Frankly, respect. The engineering is where this gets ridiculous. Living 85 metres underground sounds like a fast way to suffocate, but they solved that with a ventilation system so good it still works today. Thousands of carefully placed shafts pulled fresh air all the way down to the lowest levels, keeping the whole complex breathable. No fans, no electricity, no electricity, no air conditioning unit humming in the corner.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Just a deep understanding of airflow that a lot of modern parking gragers would frankly envy. And for security, each level could be sealed off from the inside using enormous roundstone doors shaped like millstones, weighing around half a ton each. The genius part is that these doors could only be rolled into place and opened from the inside. So if unwelcome guests came knocking, the residents simply rolled the boulder across the corridor and got on with their underground wine tasting while the intruders stood outside feeling extremely unwelcome. Here's the detail that most retellings skip, and it's the key to the whole thing. All of this was carved out of volcanic tough, a rock with a delightfully convenient personality.
Starting point is 00:08:59 When you first dig it out, it's relatively soft and workable, almost cooperative. But once it's exposed to air, it hardens over time into a tough, durable stone. So the builders got the easy mode on the way in, and the fortress-grade walls. as a bonus. It's almost suspiciously perfect, like the geology itself was in on the project, and before you assume this was one ambitious town with delusions of grandeur, here's the kicker. There are more than 200 of these underground complexes scattered across the region, some of them connected to each other by tunnels kilometres long. Who dug the first one, and exactly when science genuinely cannot tell you with confidence?
Starting point is 00:09:39 The trail goes cold somewhere down in the dark, which is honestly the most onbrose. grand way for this mystery to end. So at this point you might be sitting there thinking, fine. Ancient people were tougher and smarter than the cartoon suggested, but surely they had some clever tools we just don't know about. And that is exactly the right question to ask, so let's stop the tour for a second and actually open the toolbox. What did these people have to work with? Brace yourself, because the answer is bleak. Their entire technological arsenal consisted of stone hand tools, mostly flint and harder rocks used to chip away at softer ones. They had ropes twisted from plant fibres and animal sinew. They had wooden levers.
Starting point is 00:10:19 They had, crucially, a truly heroic number of human shoulders, and that is basically the whole list. There was no wheel, which is the part that really hurts. No steel, no iron, no pullies, no winches, no cranes, no machinery of any kind. Good luck calling a rental company for a forklift in this century. The most advanced piece of lifting equipment available was a strong person, and their backup plan was several more strong people. So let's run a little thought experiment. The kind that turns a fun fact into an actual headache. Forget the 1,500 ton monster from Lebanon for a moment. Let's lowball it dramatically and imagine a block weighing just 80 tonnes, not carving it, not transporting it, not setting it perfectly into place, just lifting it off the ground, with no machines.
Starting point is 00:11:08 How many humans does that take? And more importantly, how do you physically arrange? that many people around a single rock so they can all pull at once without yanking each other into the dirt. You very quickly run out of room for hands before you run out of weight. The math gets uncomfortable fast and the uncomfortable math is the entire reason these sites refuse to leave us alone. And to be completely fair, because this channel cares about being fair, people have actually tried to test this. Modern enthusiasts, engineers and very stubborn hobbyists have rolled up their sleeves and proven that you really can move surprisingly heavy stones with nothing but levers, ramps, counterweights, and clever timing. One famous tinkerer figured out how to walk multi-ton
Starting point is 00:11:49 concrete blocks across his yard completely alone, using balance points and a few well-placed stones, looking like a wizard the whole time. These experiments are genuinely brilliant and they prove an important point. The basic physics is not magic. We understand the principles. In theory, with enough people, enough time and enough patience to make a saint weep, the how is explainable. But here is the nerve at the centre of this entire story, the thing that the impressive demonstrations quietly reveal. Every single one of these modern successes happens at a fraction of the scale. We move a few tonnes and rightfully celebrate. We move maybe a few dozen tons with a serious team and a lot of planning, and it makes headlines. And then we look back at the ancient world casually setting blocks
Starting point is 00:12:33 weighing hundreds of tons into place with paper-thin precision, and the gap between our demonstration and their reality is not small. It's enormous. We can explain how it might have been done in principle, the way you can explain how someone might in principle swim across an ocean. Saying it is possible and actually doing it at full scale are two very different conversations. So we can absolutely describe the recipe. What nobody has managed to do is bake the same cake in the same size, the same way they did,
Starting point is 00:13:02 and that uncomfortable little gap is exactly where the next five impossible places are waiting, each one widening it a little further. For our next stop the trail does something deeply rude. It doesn't just go cold, it goes underwater. Travel all the way to a tiny island called Yonaguni at the southern tip of Japan, the kind of place that's closer to Taiwan than to most of Japan, and rewind to 1986. A local diver named Kihacharo Aratake was scouting the waters looking for good spots to watch Hammerhead Sharks, which is already a more adventurous Tuesday than most of us will ever have. Instead of sharks, about 25 metres down,
Starting point is 00:13:40 he swam straight into something that made his brain short circuit. Rising out of the seabed was a colossal stone formation, with flat terraces, sharp right angles, and what look unmistakably like enormous steps. The whole structure stretches around 150 metres long and stands taller than a five-story building. It looks, for all the world, like the ruins of a sunken pyramid that someone forgot to take inside before the tide came in. And this is where the experts split into two camps and have been throwing politely worded scientific punches ever since.
Starting point is 00:14:13 In one corner is Professor Masaki Kimura, a marine geologist who has dived the site more times than most people have left their house this year, and he has absolutely convinced it is man-made. He points to the straight edges, the parallel walls, the right angles, features, he argues nature simply doesn't bother to produce this neatly. In the other corner stands geologist Robert Schoch, who looked at the same rock and basically said, relax everyone, it's just sandstone doing what sandstone does. The local stone fractures along straight lines and flat plains naturally, so what looks like a staircase carved by an architect could just be geology being an unintentional show-off. The debate is not settled. It is in fact gloriously unsettled,
Starting point is 00:14:56 which is exactly why we are talking about it. But here's the part that should make the hair on your neck stand up, regardless of which camp you join. This is the iron fork in the road that everyone has to deal with. If the Yonaguni monument was shaped by human hands, then it is at minimum 10,000 years old, not because we found a date stamped on it, but because of basic geography.
Starting point is 00:15:19 The last time this chunk of seabed was above the water and dry enough to carve was at the end of the last ice age, when so much of the planet's water was locked up in glaciers that global sea levels sat around 100 metres lower than they do today. After that, the oceans rose and swallowed the whole thing. So either nature made it, or it was carved by people who were around before the entire cast of characters were usually credit with ancient greatness. We're talking thousands of years before the Sumerians invented the receipt, and the Egyptians figured out the pyramid. Whoever they would have been, we don't know their names, their language or their faces.
Starting point is 00:15:54 They left no records because writing hadn't been invented yet. So I'm going to put the question directly to you, and I want your honest gut answer in the comments. Look at those terraces and steps, genuine architecture from a lost chapter of humanity, or just the most convincing prank nature has ever pulled. There is no shame in either answer, because the actual experts can't agree either.

To Peru, around 3,700 meters above sea level. where the air is thin enough that just walking up hill leaves you wheezing like you ran a marathon, and somehow ancient people decided this was a great place to do their heaviest lifting.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Overlooking the old Inca capital of Cuskos, it's a structure called Saxe-Waman, and yes, tour guides love that it sounds a bit like a certain feline-themed phrase in English, and yes, you are allowed to giggle. What you will stop giggling about immediately is the wall. It runs in a massive zigzag pattern for around 400 metres, built from gigantic polygonal blocks, and these are not your tidy little bricks where everything is the same boring rectangle.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Every single stone has its own completely unique shape, with all sorts of weird angles and curves, and somehow they all fit together like the world's heaviest and most stubborn jigsaw puzzle. And when I say they fit together, I need you to understand the level we're talking about. The joints between these multi-tonn blocks are so precise that you cannot slide a sheet of paper into the seams,
Starting point is 00:18:21 not a credit card, not a knife blade, not even a piece of paper. The stones lock against each other with curved, interlocking faces, almost like they were poured in place as a liquid and then hardened, which they absolutely were not. The largest blocks here weigh somewhere between 128 and 200 tonnes. For comparison, a fully loaded city bus weighs maybe 12 tonnes, so picture stacking and perfectly fitting the equivalent of more than a dozen buses into a wall, by hand, while gasping for oxygen at altitude, and then comes the logistics nightmare,
Starting point is 00:18:54 because the stone for some of this came from a quarry called Rumicolkar located around 35 kilometres away, across gorges and rivers, no horses because horses hadn't arrived in the Americas yet, no mules, and once again, no wheel. The Inker and their predecessors built one of the most precise stone structures on earth, without the single most basic transportation upgrade in human history. This isn't just modern hype either. Even the people who conquered the region were stunned. A Spanish conquistador and chronicler named Pedro Pizarro,
Starting point is 00:19:25 writing back in the 1500s, flat out recorded that the stones were so enormous he could not imagine human hands had placed them, and that the joints were so tight the point of a pin could not be pushed into the gap between them. Centuries later, when modern researchers showed up with laser scanners and precision measuring gear, they basically confirmed that the bewildered conquistador was not exaggerating.
Starting point is 00:19:46 The fit is, by any standard, absurd, and here is the final flex, the part that turns this from impressive into almost insulting to modern engineering. This region gets hammered by serious earthquakes. Over the centuries, the grand colonial churches and buildings that the Spanish proudly constructed on top of and around these sites have cracked, crumbled, and collapsed into rubble. The ancient walls underneath them, they just shrug it off and stay standing. The pliginal blocks are shaped so cleverly that when the ground shakes the stones dance and settle right back into place. The newcomers built on top of the masters and learned the hard way whose work was going to last, so by now you've probably noticed a pattern forming, and you are not the only one. The people who
Starting point is 00:20:30 actually live next to these places noticed it too, and their explanation is the strangest, most consistent thread in this entire story. Because almost everywhere we go, when you ask the local population who built the impossible thing in their backyard, they give you a remarkably similar answer, and that answer is, with great confidence, not us. The original inhabitants, the descendants of these supposed builders, very often refused to take credit and instead insist the work was done by something other than ordinary humans, which is a bizarre thing for an entire culture to be modest about. Usually civilisations love taking credit for their monuments.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Egyptians, kings, emperors, the whole point was bragging rights. But at sight after sight the locals essentially shrug and point at the sky or the distant past and say it wasn't them, take the ink of themselves. Despite being credited in the textbooks with that paper-thin masonry we just admired, some of their own traditions told of an earlier age and described how the great stones were moved and shaped in ways no living person could repeat, with stories of an ancient serpent that could turn laboring workers into solid blocks of stone with a single glance. Whether you read that literally or as a memory dressed up in myth, It is not the story of a people calmly explaining their own construction techniques.
Starting point is 00:21:45 It is the story of a people genuinely baffled by what was already there. Drift south to Bolivia and the ruins of Puma Punku, which we will get to properly later because it deserves its own meltdown, and the local explanation was even shorter and even bolder. The gods built it, they said, and they built it in a single night. No permits, no scaffolding, no decade-long timeline. One night, divine overtime, done by morning. The pattern stretches all the way back to where we started this whole journey.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Remember that quarry in Lebanon and its lonely 1,500-ton block? The locals there had a story too, a Maronite patriarch writing in the 1400s recorded an old tradition claiming that Balbeck was originally raised by Cain, the biblical son of Adam, who supposedly fled there and populated the place with a race of giants. Giants, naturally being the go-to explanation whenever the stones are simply too big for normal people to have lifted. Even Mark Twain, the famously sharp American writer, visited the ruins in the 1800s and came away admitting that the true history of the place was sealed away from us, a book slammed shut that no one could read. When a guy who built his entire career on having a clever answer for everything stands in front of your ruins and basically
Starting point is 00:23:01 says, I've got nothing, that is worth paying attention to. And here's why this matters more than just a fun collection of spooky folklore. These cultures were set. separated by entire oceans. The Inca high in the Andes had never met the people of Lebanon. The builders of the Pacific had no idea Bolivia existed. They shared no language, no trade routes, no group chat, and yet, completely independently, on different continents, with no way of comparing notes, an astonishing number of them landed on the same uneasy conclusion. These walls, these blocks, these impossible structures were not the everyday handiwork of regular human hands. Now, the easy explanation is that ancient people were just superstitious and slapped a
Starting point is 00:23:44 god or a giant onto anything they didn't understand, and that is genuinely a fair point worth keeping in your back pocket. But it is at least a little strange that so many unconnected peoples, looking at so many unconnected ruins, all reached for the exact same excuse. Either humanity has a universal habit of underselling its own ancestors, or these communities were trying, in the only language they had to tell us something they couldn't quite explain. And the next three places we visit are going to make that something a whole lot harder to wave away. And to make that point land, let's start with the one structure on this list you absolutely think you already know, the Great Pyramid of Giza. You've seen it on a thousand textbook covers, a million postcards, and roughly every documentary
Starting point is 00:24:29 ever made about ancient mysteries. You think you've got it figured out. Big triangle, dead Pharaoh, lots of sand. But here's the thing, nobody actually tells you, the numbers, and the numbers are where this thing goes from famous to frankly unhinged. Let's start with the basics. The Great Pyramid is built from an estimated 2.3 million blocks of stone. Take a second to feel that number, because the human brain just glides right over it. If you stacked and placed one block every single minute, working around the clock with no breaks, no weekends, no bathroom stops, it would take you over four years just to count them, let alone move them, and the average block weighs around 25 tonnes. That's not a brick you toss to your buddy. That's heavier than a school bus multiplied by more
Starting point is 00:25:16 than 2 million. But the limestone blocks were apparently the easy part, which tells you something about the absurdity of the difficult part. Deep inside the pyramid sit massive granite slabs, and granite is a whole different beast from limestone, much harder and much heavier. Some of these granite pieces way up to 80 tonnes each, and the closest place to get granite of this quality was Aswan, a quarry sitting about 800 kilometres to the south. So the builders quarried 80-toned stones, then somehow transported them roughly the distance of a long road trip, hauling them up the Nile, and then lifted them into precise positions dozens of metres up inside the structure. Just imagine the project manager pitching that timeline. We need two million stones,
Starting point is 00:26:01 some of them heavier than a humpback whale sourced from a quarry a week's journey away, assembled with zero margin for error, and no, you cannot have a crane, because cranes will not exist for thousands of years. Naturally they delivered. And then there's the precision, which is the part that genuinely refuses to make sense. The Great Pyramids stood as the tallest structure on the entire planet for nearly 3,700 years, holding that record until medieval cathedrals finally inched past it. We're talking about a building that out-tawled everything humanity made for almost four millennia. But height is the boring part.
Starting point is 00:26:38 The base of the pyramid covers a footprint bigger than several football fields, and across that entire 200-meter-plus length, the foundation is level to within less than two centimetres. Less than the width of your thumb, across a base the size of a small neighbourhood. Modern construction crews with laser levels and computer guidance would high-five each other for that result. These people did it with supposedly ropes, water and a really good eye.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Now for the detail that crosses over from impressive engineering into the genuinely eerie. The four faces of the pyramid are aligned almost perfectly to the cardinal directions, true north, south, east and west. And when I say almost perfectly, the deviation is only around three minutes and 38 seconds of arc, which is a tiny fraction of a single degree. To give you a sense of how ridiculous that is, When humanity later established the famous Greenwich Meridian, the official line were used to organize global time and navigation, it was set with less accuracy than this pyramid's alignment.
Starting point is 00:27:37 People in the 1800s with brass telescopes and serious math were beaten by a structure built thousands of years earlier. The builders nailed the orientation of the planet's cardinal points, better than the folks who invented modern timekeeping. And the strangeness goes upward, too because the narrow internal shafts running through the pyramid appear to point at specific stars, including the belt of Orion, the bright star Sirius, and a star called Thuban, which happened to be the pole star back when the pyramid was built. So not only is the building astronomically aligned, it seems to be aligned to the sky, as it looked at that exact moment in history. Here's the punchline that wraps the whole thing in a bow of pure confusion. According to the standard textbook timeline,
Starting point is 00:28:23 the people who pulled off this feat of planetary scale precision did not even have a simple magnetic compass. The compass, that little spinning needle you'd grab in a heartbeat if someone asked you to find true north, was supposedly not available to them, so they achieved alignment more accurate than later civilizations would manage with advanced instruments, while allegedly lacking the most basic instrument for the job. Either the standard timeline is missing some serious chapters, or these builders had observation skills, patience and astronomical knowledge so refined, it makes our gadgets look like cheating. And remember, this is the famous one. This is the site we feel comfortable with, the one we put on the brochures. We've now reached
Starting point is 00:29:05 the part of the journey where the famous and comfortable runs out, and we go back to where this all started to face the heaviest question of them all. Because it's time to return to that lonely block in the Lebanese quarry, the 1,500-ton giant we abandoned in the dirt at the very beginning. As promised, it was never alone. That quarry is home to an entire family of impossible stones, and the forgotten giant is only the third largest of them. Lying nearby is a colossal block nicknamed the Stone of the Pregnant Woman, which tips the scale at around 1,000 tonnes all on its own. Next to it rests another monster, weighing roughly 1,242 tonnes, discovered more recently and
Starting point is 00:29:45 quietly claiming an even higher spot in the rankings. So this wasn't a one-time fluke where some ambitious crew bit off more than they could chew. Someone was carving multiple stones, each heavier than anything we can lift today, like they were running a production line for objects that violate common sense. And here's the thing about all three of these quarry giants. Like the first one we met, they were never finished and never moved. They sit there to this day, partially carved, attached to the bedrock, frozen mid-project, as if the workers heard a lunch bell that never rang again. But the quarry blocks, as staggering as they are, are technically the ones that didn't make the cut. The real headache is what they actually did manage to move and
Starting point is 00:30:25 place. At the base of the ancient complex, it's a feature known as the Trillathon, which is a fancy word for three stones, and these three stones are the entire reason engineers argue about this site to this day. Each of the three blocks weighs in the neighbourhood of 750 tonnes. Each one stretches about 19 metres long, longer than a city bus and then some, and here is the part that should make your jaw unhinge. These three roughly 750-ton blocks were not just dragged across flat ground. They were lifted and set into a wall about 20 metres off the ground, fitted together so precisely that they've held their position for millennia. We struggle to lift a few hundred tons today with our biggest cranes on a good day with perfect conditions. These builders lifted three
Starting point is 00:31:09 750-ton stones, two stories into the air, and set them like Lego bricks. Good luck finding a contractor who'll quote you that job in this century. So who actually did it? And this is where the two camps draw their battle lines, and you, in the comets, get to pick a side. The mainstream camp says, relax, this is Roman engineering. The Romans built a grand temple complex on this spot. They were genuinely brilliant builders,
Starting point is 00:31:36 and with enough manpower, capstan's, winches, wooden cranes, and the unshakable Roman confidence that they could do anything, they hauled and lifted those blocks. It is, to be fair, a perfectly reasonable position backed by the fact that the Romans were absolute show-offs, who loved doing the impossible just to prove a point. The other camp pumps the brakes hard. They argue that the Trilathon was already sitting there long before the Romans ever showed up,
Starting point is 00:32:01 possibly thousands of years earlier, and that the Romans simply built their temple on top of a foundation they inherited and didn't fully understand themselves. Their evidence is in the details. The enormous trillathon blocks, they point out, differ from the surrounding Roman stonework in their style, the way they were dressed and finished, and crucially in how they've weathered over the ages. The mega blocks look older, more worn, and stylistically out of step with the confident Roman masonry stacked around them, like a vintage engine block bolted into a brand-new car. There is no neat resolution waiting for you here, and that's the honest truth of it.
Starting point is 00:32:37 The Roman engineering explanation is grounded and sensible and has a lot going for it. The older foundation idea is harder to prove, but stubbornly refuses to die, partly because no one has ever convincingly demonstrated moving a 750-ton block with rope and timber, let alone three of them, up to a height of 20 metres. Both camps are staring at the same stones and seeing two completely different stories, which by now is the most familiar feeling on this entire journey, so I'm handing the gavel to you. Team Roman, where determined ancient engineers and an army of workers brute forced the heaviest construction job in recorded history, or team lost builders, where the foundation predates Rome by ages and belongs to someone we haven't properly met yet.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Drop your verdict below and defend it, because the jury of history is still very much out. And just when you think wait is the final boss of impossible, we have one last place to visit, where the problem stops being how heavy the stone is and starts being something far stranger about the stone. itself. So we arrive at the final boss, the site that takes everything we've struggled with, and adds a brand new flavour of impossible on top, cross over into Bolivia and climb even higher than the breathless heights of Peru, all the way up to a wind-blasted plateau sitting around 3,850 metres above sea level. This is the home of Puma Punku, and we touched on it earlier when we mentioned the local legend that the gods finished it in a single night. Now you get to see why a people might genuinely reach for that explanation. Up here the air holds about a third less oxygen
Starting point is 00:34:09 than down at sea level, so every swing of a tool, every step, every breath costs you dearly. There are barely any trees on this plateau, which means almost no timber for the wooden rollers and sledges that the standard explanation leans on so heavily everywhere else. Nature looked at this spot and said, you want to build something colossal here? Absolutely not. And then somebody built something colossal here anyway, purely out of spite apparently. The blocks themselves run up to around 131 tonnes, which by now you can practically eyeball, but the weight is no longer the headline. The headline is the material. A lot of the most jaw-dropping stones at Puma Punku are made of Andesite, a volcanic rock that is brutally, almost unfairly hard. We're talking close to
Starting point is 00:34:53 the hardness of hardened steel. You cannot casually chip this stuff with a softer rock the way earlier builders-shaped limestone. Working Andesite is like trying to carve a sculpture out of a tank. And naturally, because the universe enjoys a good joke, the nearest source for this stone sat tens of kilometres away on the far side of Lake Titicaca, meaning these absurdly heavy, absurdly hard blocks had to be transported across or around a massive high-altitude lake, before the real work even began. Good luck booking a ferry for a 100-ton slab in this era. and here is where Puma Punku stops being merely impossible and starts being genuinely uncanny.
Starting point is 00:35:31 The detail that makes engineers do a double-take. The stones aren't just big and hard, they are machined. I don't use that word lightly. These blocks have surfaces so flat they're nearly mirror-smooth, edges that meet at crisp 90-degree angles, and identical pieces cut to matching dimensions as if they came off an assembly line. Some are carved into precise H-shaped,
Starting point is 00:35:54 repeated again and again with a consistency that suggests templates or standardised parts. There are perfectly straight grooves and lines of small drilled holes, spaced at remarkably even intervals, in some spots only around six millimeters apart, running along the stone like the work of a machine following a programme. If you showed photos of these cuts to a modern machinist without context, plenty of them would assume it was done on a computer-controlled cutting tool. the kind that did not exist anywhere on earth for thousands of years after these stones were shaped. The level of repeatability is the part that itches at the brain, because hand tools and human error usually leave a signature, a little wobble, a slight inconsistency.
Starting point is 00:36:37 Puma Punku's best work has an almost suspicious lack of wobble. Then comes the twist that flips the whole story sideways. Set into some of these stones are small notches shaped to hold metal clamps, and researchers found that the builders used copper-based clums. clamps to lock certain blocks together against earthquakes. The fascinating part is how those clamps were made. The evidence suggests the metal was poured in molten, right there on site, cast directly into the carved notches in the stone like filling a mould. That means the builders absolutely understood metallurgy. They knew how to find ore, smelt it, melt it down, and pour it
Starting point is 00:37:13 into precise shapes on location. So these were not clueless people fumbling in the dark. They had sophisticated metalworking knowledge. And yet, here is the part nobody can square. With all that metallurgical skill, they apparently still shape that diamond hard andesite using methods we cannot confidently identify or reproduce today. Starting point is 00:38:46 And there's a cruel irony layered on top of all this precision. Puma Punku today looks less like a ruin and more like a bomb went off in a giant's Lego box. The blocks are scattered, toppled, and flung around the site in chaotic heaps, which has only deepened the mystery, because nobody is entirely sure whether they were ever fully assembled, knocked down by ancient earthquakes,
Starting point is 00:39:09 or torn apart by later treasure hunters and builders helping themselves to free, perfectly cut stone. Imagine spending who knows how to be able to be able to be able to be fully-cut stone. Imagine spending who knows how long machining the hardest rock around to flawless tolerances, and then history just dumps the whole set out on the floor and walks off. Whatever the original structure looked like, we're now trying to reverse engineer a masterpiece from its shattered pieces, with half the instructions missing and the other half written in a language nobody recorded.
Starting point is 00:39:36 So let's pull all seven of these threads together, because that's really what this has been building toward. We've crossed continents and oceans to stand in front of a hill in Turkey, Older than farming itself, a city carved 85 metres straight down into hardening rock, a possible monument hiding underwater since the Ice Age. A Peruvian wall so tight it laughs at earthquakes, a pyramid aligned to the heavens with insulting accuracy, a Lebanese quarry full of stones too heavy for any modern machine, and a Bolivian plateau covered in Andesite cut like a factory ran out of it.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Seven spots, no shared language, no shared era, no group chat, and yet every single one of them leaves us standing there scratching our heads. So now, in the interest of being honest rather than just dramatic, let's lay both explanations on the table and let you weigh them yourself. On one side stands the position of mainstream academic science, and it deserves real respect, because it is not lazy and it is not stupid. The argument goes like this. Give ancient people enough time,
Starting point is 00:40:39 and time is the magic ingredient we always underestimate. give them thousands of workers organized across generations, give them simple but clever tools like levers, ramps, sledges and water to reduce friction, and give them the slowly accumulated knowledge passed down through centuries of trial and error, and every one of these sites becomes explainable on its own terms. We tend to picture ancient construction as a few guys in a single afternoon, when in reality these projects could span lifetimes, swallowing the labour of entire societies who had nothing but time and motivation. Humans are astonishingly capable when they're patient, organized and slightly obsessed.
Starting point is 00:41:18 Under this view, there's no mystery requiring anything exotic, just willpower, manpower, and an awful lot of Tuesdays. On the other side sits a single, stubborn observation that refuses to go away, and it's the quiet thing humming underneath this entire video. We are a civilization with diamond-tipped drills, computer-guided cutting tools, hydraulic lifts, and cranes capable of hoisting hundreds of tons. We have satellites and lasers and the entire accumulated engineering knowledge of the modern world, and with all of that we still have not gone back and
Starting point is 00:41:52 reproduce these feats at their original scale. We can move a respectable stone and celebrate. We can explain on paper how each individual site might have been done. But nobody has rebuilt a trilithon, recut a slab of Andesite to that mirror-finished precision by the supposed ancient methods, or match that paper-thin polygonal masonry at full size. Saying something is possible in principle, and actually pulling it off are, as we keep discovering two very different sports. And that uncomfortable distance between our explanation and our demonstration
Starting point is 00:42:23 is the whole reason these places still hypnotise us. Maybe the truth lives somewhere in the middle, and honestly that's where the most interesting answers usually hide. Maybe ancient people were vastly more skilled, more patient, and more clever than the cartoon version we in inherited in school, and maybe somewhere along the way, certain techniques, certain hard-won knowledge, simply got lost. Civilizations collapse. Libraries burn. Master craftsmen die without passing on the trick. Knowledge is not a one-way escalator that only ever goes up.
Starting point is 00:42:57 It can vanish, and it has vanished, more than once in human history. We love to imagine progress as a tidy straight line marching from the caveman to the smartphone, each generation strictly smarter than the last. But the evidence carved into these stones suggests the line is messier than that, full of peaks we forgot we climbed and valleys we fell into without noticing, which leaves us with a thought worth carrying out of here. What if progress isn't only about inventing brand new things? What if a real part of it is remembering things that were once known and then lost, recovering the very old and the very forgotten? The people who raised these monuments weren't primitives waiting around for us to invent the good stuff. They were us, with the same brains,
Starting point is 00:43:40 the same hands, the same stubborn refusal to accept the word impossible. They just answered the question in a way we can no longer fully read.
