Starting point is 00:00:43 Viarai. The voice that we love. A few years ago, I went to a party at a mutual friend's house. It was your average party. Lots of drinking, loud music. People passed out in random places. places and such. Most of the people there went to the same
Starting point is 00:01:16 university, save for a few that were there because they knew someone else, such as myself. I wanted to get out of the state that I grew up in, but I didn't really know what I wanted to do post-high school. So I just moved in with my friend and found a decent paying job until I figured my life out. That friend invited me to join him at what was basically like a
Starting point is 00:01:44 friend's giving type of deal, but more alcohol, less turkey. I was just going to be by myself this year, as my parents were going to Italy for their anniversary and I didn't want to waste a trip of coming home if
Starting point is 00:02:00 they weren't going to be there. So, I figured why not? Free beer, free food, and free entertainment. It was pretty much as I expected. I didn't. I didn't know too many people there, but I talked to a few people.
Starting point is 00:02:16 My friend introduced me to some, and we all joked and hung around. After a while of BSing and getting a little buzzed, I went to find a restroom. On my way, I passed the front room, which had these huge bay windows in the front. And on the porch out front was a single person, sitting on the half wall, and it looked like she was reading. who goes to a loud-ass party and tries to read. So, after stopping at the restroom and still seeing her out there, I decided to join her. Her name was Olivia, and she was, in fact, reading.
Starting point is 00:02:58 She said she was dragged here by her friends to help her get her mind off of her recent breakup that she'd had, but she was also getting really into this book, so she brought it along. I used to read a lot in high school, and I was teased about it a lot, so I felt like I had something in common with her already. I didn't really have the time to read any more,
Starting point is 00:03:21 and I envied that she'd just found any time to do it at all. We started talking about books, and she even suggested some audio books to check out. She showed me an app to use and things like that. We talked for hours, it seemed, before we realized the house had gotten pretty quiet. and many of the people had left or passed out. She hadn't drink any, and my friends and I rode together,
Starting point is 00:03:49 so, seeing as how he was passed out somewhere, she offered to give me a ride home, and I accepted. I felt bad since it was around one in the morning, and she was willing to take me home, so I offered to let her come in, and I would make her some coffee or something. She declined, though, saying that she had things to do early the next morning,
Starting point is 00:04:11 morning but would call, so she exchanged numbers and I headed to bed. That same day, it was probably around noon or so. I woke up to her calling, to my surprise. I'd only been in one previous semi-serious relationships, so I wasn't expecting her to actually call or be at all interested. Sure enough, though, she was calling to ask me to come to the door as she had brought us lunch. I thought it was a sweet gesture of her, and I was surprised that she remembered where I lived. While eating, we talked a bit more about ourselves, where we worked, where we were from, and that sort of thing.
Starting point is 00:04:57 She said she was attending the nearby uni as well, and was actually an intern nurse at a local clinic. I thought, great, she has her life planned out at least. Maybe it would do me some good getting to no someone like this. Of course, we quickly hit it off and started dating. She'd stay over at my place a lot, and I would occasionally go to hers, but she preferred staying at mine. I didn't really have a problem with it as she would get up and leave at random times for work, so I didn't have to worry about rushing out of her place or anything.
Starting point is 00:05:37 One thing that she really seemed to like to do was, bring me gifts. I want to say she was buying them, but I wasn't always sure about that. Some things were in packages, but most of them were not. She gave me a lot of shirts and baseball caps. I was never one for hats, but she said she liked the way they looked on me, so I wore them. She told me she would get the clothes from the thrift store, or someone at her work gave them to her. Just stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:06:09 I thought, again, it was normal. I didn't have a problem with thrift store stuff, other than the fact that sometimes it still kind of smelled like the last person, but that's why you're supposed to wash that stuff anyways, right? I think the weirdest gift she ever gave me was a pair of shoes that were too small for me. I told her I couldn't fit in them, but kept them anyways, because I didn't want to seem ungrateful.
Starting point is 00:06:37 She always seemed ecstatic, when I would try on the stuff she got me, too. Like, she would practically squeal and pounce on me. I thought I should be happy to get the gifts, but I think she was actually more excited about it. Overall, though, the first few months were great until I started to learn about her ticks that would set her off. One thing I did notice
Starting point is 00:07:05 was that she started to become more jealous or territorial I suppose. When we went to a restaurant or something, and the waitress would smile, call us honey, and make small talk, you know, her job, Olivia started to get mean. She would make faces at her,
Starting point is 00:07:25 or even me at times. Again, not really experiencing something like this before, I just calmed her down. I told her the normal things that all I needed was her in the sorts. It wasn't a lie. I wasn't the type to do that, but it wasn't a bad feeling either. Knowing that she was getting mad at the thought, you know, it was kind of a nice ego boost. She was always so curious as to where I was going, what I was going to be doing for the day, which, again, I just took that as her being clingy.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Since she was acting this way, I thought I would reciprocate. by asking what her plans were for the day and then she just snapped, saying that it was none of my business. I'd never seen this side of her, though, so I just apologized and did my best to comfort her. When she finally did calm down, she explained everything to me, why she was so jealous but also so defensive. She said it was because of her ex. She had been with this guy for a year,
Starting point is 00:08:37 and apparently it was hell. He would be out all hours of the day and night and would refuse to tell her where he was going, always making up lies or excuses. She said if she asked too many times, he would go into the rage and throw her to the ground and punch her till she passed out. She said she stayed with him,
Starting point is 00:09:00 afraid he would hurt her if she tried to leave, though. Until one time, she finally found out that she was the, the side piece, basically, and this dude was engaged with a kid on the way. She was devastated, but it finally got her to pack up and leave while he wasn't home, and she hasn't seen him since. All I could think to do was just comfort her and try my best to convince her that that wasn't me and I was not that type of person.
Starting point is 00:09:31 So, with that in mind, I tried to be more accepting of her questioning and jealous comments, knowing what she had been through. Now, that part wasn't a lie. I did my best to be very open with her as to where I was going, who I was going to be around, but I was also still very cautious as to where she would be on certain occasions. She would leave early in the mornings sometimes, as well as late at night, like when we were already in bed,
Starting point is 00:10:04 and she always claimed it was for work. I didn't think much of it at the time, as some nurses are on call, right? That is a normal thing. But then I started thinking more into it. Like, would an intern nurse be on call, though? Or if she was, would it really be all hours of the day? I just didn't know how to address it or question it due to her previous relationship. So I tried to just ask Kat.
Starting point is 00:10:37 while we were eating or something if she was on call that night or something. I was pretending I wanted to make plans or do something together. There were a few occasions where she would tell me no, but then end up leaving anyways, saying she had to work. I still wasn't getting any answers. To jump a little ahead here, her disappearances continued to happen all while still trying to police me and my whereabouts. If this truly was her work, I tried to side with her and tell her that she should put her foot down to get a better schedule so that she could have a regular sleep pattern,
Starting point is 00:11:18 hoping that would help ease her anyways with how controlling she had started to be. To my surprise, she agreed with me, and she said that she would ask them about it the next day. That blew up in my face when she came home upset, saying she had been fired. I consult her, trying to stay positive, and I offered to get dinner for her when her phone went off. Within seconds, her face perked up and she said she had to go. Obviously, she had just lost her job, so where could she need to be? I started to just outright ask when she told me she was going to go by her friend's place from work to get her stuff as she grabbed it for her.
Starting point is 00:12:05 It sounded fairly reasonable, so I offered to go with her, but she was adamant that she could go alone. So I kissed her goodbye and waited to see her back after a while. A few hours passed when I started getting curious as to where she was, and if she was okay, since she was pretty upset. So I tried texting her and didn't get an answer. I called her once, not wanting to trigger her or anything. when she answered almost whispering.
Starting point is 00:12:39 She said she was on her way back, and before I could even ask about her whispering, she hung up. Not long after, she showed up and pretty much slammed the door open, jolting me out of my chair. I was starting to doze off, so it took me a minute to realize that she was here, but instead of a box of what I would expect to be office supplies, is she was holding a puppy.
Starting point is 00:13:06 She also wasn't wearing the clothes that she left in. She was wearing a wedding dress. I approached her asking what the hell was going on when she started screaming at me that she didn't have time to walk me through it all and asked me to take her somewhere. And that's when I told her I wasn't going anywhere until she told me what was going on, but as I approached her,
Starting point is 00:13:31 I realized the dress had something on it. And it looked like blood. So that's when I stepped back and again I asked her what the hell happened. She started freaking out and started to head back out the door when shortly after, two or three police cars showed up at my house. We were told to get on the ground, handcuffed, everything, and all I could think to do was shout, What did you do?
Starting point is 00:14:05 I had to give a whole statement to them as to what I was doing that night, how I knew her, and if I knew this other guy named Rick. And that's when it kind of all finally started to make sense. Olivia did not have a crazy, abusive ex-boyfriend. She was. was the crazy ex. And actually, not even that. This Rick guy had made out with her at a party.
Starting point is 00:14:35 She became obsessed with him, but he was already seeing someone. Apparently, he tried telling her that it was all a mistake, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. She stalked him, harassed him, everything. Then, when she found out he was engaged, she started doing the same to his partner, but became threat. She actually ran into his poor wife at the store once, and she attacked her, punching her, scratching her, all of it. That's when they filed the restraining order.
Starting point is 00:15:10 However, someone had been breaking into their home and taking weird things, like clothing and shoes. She did work for the clinic, that part wasn't a lie. However, she was fired because she would randomly leave without warning to go and watch this guy when he went on lunch. or went home. And when she got fired, she broke into their place one last time, stole this woman's wedding dress, and then tried to kill her.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Rick ended up coming home and catching her, thankfully stopping her too, but she topped it all off by taking their dog as well. And her genius thought was that they didn't know where I lived, so she just went to my place. But the cops were definitely following her, already knowing about the restraining order and what she drove, I guess.
Starting point is 00:16:03 I had to convince the police that I knew nothing about any of this, and I hoped it showed because I had to be a witness in court, and I heard most of it there. I tried speaking to her afterwards to try and see what the hell she was thinking, but as she explained her reasoning, all I could think was that she was absolutely delusional. where was the person I had met like six months ago on that porch? So I definitely ended anything we had there.
Starting point is 00:16:37 I was there for what they needed, gave the guy his stuff back, and we both apologized for what we had been through, and I moved on. I am still single because that was just a mess, and I don't think I'm ready to try again, not just yet. Not to mention, I don't want to end up becoming just like Rick. It's never too early to plan your summer story in Europe with WestJet, from rolling countryside to cobblestone streets. Begin your next chapter.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Book your seat at westjet.com or call your travel agent. WestJet, where your story takes off. Back in high school, I was in a pretty serious relationship. At least it was serious for us. Alex and I were really good friends in middle school until it slipped out that he had feelings for me. I knew him really well and I knew he was a sweet guy, so I was willing to give it a try and we were inseparable.
Starting point is 00:17:49 We ended up dating from our freshman year through the summer to our senior year. Unfortunately, I found out that summer before my senior year that we would be moving out of the country due to my first. father's work. I was devastated. I would have to leave my whole life behind that I knew. I remember there was a huge fight between my parents for like a week, because my mom wanted to stay so that I could finish school here first,
Starting point is 00:18:19 and then I could choose what I wanted to do afterwards. My dad was adamant, though, that we didn't have a choice, and he refused the idea of me living with my aunt to finish. We were all going to be moving to the UK, and we didn't have a choice. I almost thought they were going to get a divorce, but my mom eventually came around to it and tried her best to convince me as well. The problem, however, was me being a teenage girl in love, I thought this was going to be the end for me.
Starting point is 00:18:57 There was no way we were going to be able to make a long-distance relationship work. especially not across countries. So I went over to Alex's house one night to hang out and break the news. It was incredibly difficult for both of us. He tried everything he could to be optimistic, too. Tried convincing me it would work out between us, and that he could come visit after we graduated. I remember losing it, telling him that it wouldn't work out,
Starting point is 00:19:28 saying it was over and then I left. He tried calling me a few times to talk, but I didn't really want to talk because I knew it was just going to make it worse. I spent the summer packing, had to sleep over with my closest friends one last time, and then we left the States. My dad was actually from the UK, so we already had passports and dual citizenship since I was a baby, so thankfully that didn't add to the time. We got there, and I became a recluse for a while. I had to start over on friendships, and it really hit hard for the first half of the year. I had a few really close friends keep in touch with me via email, and the occasional and limited long-distance calls.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Alex tried to do the same, but it was really hard for me. I ignored him for a while, and finally started responding, and then talking to him. He was still such an understanding and caring guy through it all. He didn't make me feel bad. He didn't push it and try to make it work. Just asked me what it was like, how I was feeling about it all, things like that.
Starting point is 00:20:50 And honestly, it helped a lot. To just have someone to vent to and explain my day-to-day was great. My parents approved of him too, so they allowed me. to use a webcam to talk to him, while in the living room or kitchen, still, which was amazing. As time went on, I made more friends near me, and it made it so much easier having connections on both sides. However, as I met more friends and spent more time with them, I started talking to my old friends less and less. It was never a sour situation, though. As time moved on, we still talked, and on MySpace and Facebook,
Starting point is 00:21:34 but we had our own lives. Then also included Alex. Our calls became less frequent, and the messages became shorter and had less substance to them. Eventually, I got a long email from Alex, basically saying that he still cared for me and was happy I was doing well,
Starting point is 00:21:55 but that he met someone and was starting to have feelings for them. He was basically asking for my permission to ask them out. I was happy for him. I was glad he was able to move on and I told him to go for it. From then, he confirmed they were dating and from there, our emails were almost non-existent. But we did keep in contact on social media. It definitely got easier over time living there.
Starting point is 00:22:26 As expected, we ended up staying there longer than just that year. year. I went to college there and had a great time, but I also knew where I belonged. I knew that I would eventually move back to Oregon because that was my home, and it always would be. So, after about five years, I moved back to the States, alone, while my parents stayed in the U.K. I was about two cities over from where I used to live, so still fairly close. and I found a great job in my field before I even moved. I hadn't really had any long-lasting relationships while in the UK, so I didn't feel like I was leaving much behind.
Starting point is 00:23:14 I got an apartment and a cat, and I was content with my life. I reconnected with two of my closest girlfriends, and we had a lot of catching up, but otherwise, it was life as usual. To be honest, I didn't even think about reaching out to Alex because I knew we both moved on so long ago, and it didn't even cross my mind. Apparently, though, he caught wind that I was back and wanted to get in touch. He reached out to me on Facebook, and I was surprised, but was also happy to hear from him. We caught up a little bit.
Starting point is 00:23:55 I gave him my phone number, and we probably talked on the phone number. one night for an hour or so, we decided we would get together for dinner one night and just hang out. A few days later, we met up and had a great night. We started talking about the rest of high school, what we did afterwards, and even relationships. He told me that he'd had a few, but none of them ever lasted or worked out, and he said that he was single at the time. After several drinks and talking. We went back to my place and hooked up. But I knew then that I wanted to be with him, and I had control of my life, so I could make that decision. We started seeing each other more and more, and I told my friends about it, too. One of them was surprised because they said he wasn't the
Starting point is 00:24:48 same after I left. They said he became very depressed and quiet compared to who he used to be. as well as aggressive. He was disrespectful to the teachers and mean to our mutual friends until they stopped hanging out with them. I tried convincing her that it was probably just as hard for him as it was for me, but that he seemed like the same person
Starting point is 00:25:13 that I had to leave behind. That's when she told me about him changing schools. She said he started practically stalking a girl he was dating and broke up with. and it became a problem with the school, so his parents had to pull him out. I wasn't aware of any of this, and I convinced myself that it was probably difficult for him, and that it was high school, so we were adults now, and we were all different people. The next time we got together, I was curious, so I brought it up to him,
Starting point is 00:25:51 and I definitely saw a change in him when I did, too. He explained it exactly as I expected, though. He said it was really hard on him. He tried to move on, but it was so difficult, so the girl had broken up with him, and it was like losing me all over again. He admitted that what he did was stupid and embarrassing, and he had tried to forget about it,
Starting point is 00:26:15 but people kept bringing it up and treating him differently because of it. I know. It was me falling for my old high school sweetheart, but... It just made me feel even worse for him, and kind of like I was to blame. I told him I understood, and I didn't think any less of him because of it either, so we went on as normal. Now, I didn't really think about it at the time, but when we were together, we would either be in public or the majority of the time was at my place. He very seldom stayed overnight, though.
Starting point is 00:26:52 but I didn't think much of it other than probably not wanting to move too fast. At one point, though, he told me he was going to have to go out of town for work and would be gone for three days. I was really grateful for the job that I had and was able to work remotely, and I offered to go with him. However, he was quite adamant that I couldn't go, and he said he would keep in touch the whole way, so I accepted, and just waited for his call when he arrived where he was going.
Starting point is 00:27:25 He called me a few hours later that night, saying he had made it, and that he had a convention the next day and would call me that evening. The day went by as normal. He called me shortly after dinner, and that was it. I went about my night, and then I went to bed. In the middle of the night, though, Alex called me, and he sounded rushed or distracted. I asked him what was wrong. and he said there wasn't anything wrong.
Starting point is 00:27:54 In fact, the convention had been cancelled, so he was coming home, and almost was, and he asked to come stay at my place tonight. Half awake and confused, I agreed. He was there pretty quick. He was a few hours away, so I was confused how he got to my place so quickly, but he claimed he was trying to surprise me. When he got there, though, he was wet.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Like he had just taken a shower or had been sweating, but I didn't really have time to think about it or ask questions before we were both preoccupied. The next few days were great, though. He seemed happier than normal. He was getting up and making breakfast, helping with dinner, and he even stayed the weekend at my place. On top of all this, Alex actually asked me to marry him and suggested that we moved back to the UK to be close to.
Starting point is 00:28:51 to my parents. I was ecstatic, but I was also confused as to why he would want to move to the UK. I waited so long to move back, and I was lucky to reconnect with him, and now he wanted to move with me. I told him yes on the marriage, but said that we needed to talk about moving. He seemed a little disappointed, but was giving different options, like other states or countries, but eventually I convinced him to give me some time. Sadly, it wouldn't last long, though.
Starting point is 00:29:28 I started getting calls from my friends back to back and texts asking to call her, so I called her back. She was frantic, asking if I was with Alex, to which I said I was, but she said she needed to talk to me alone. This was the same friend that told me about Alex's past. and I didn't want him to get upset, so I went back to my office to talk to her. She started asking me all about where he had been, what he was doing, things like that. I got her to calm down enough to explain a little more.
Starting point is 00:30:06 She told me to meet her somewhere and to not tell him. So I told him I had to make a run for something, and he started becoming anxious. He was asking me specifically where I was going. what I was going to be doing, how long I was going to be gone, and things like that. While arguing with him about this and trying to figure out what the hell was going on between him and my friend, I got a knock at my door. It was the cops. When I answered, they had their hands on their gun and immediately asked if Alex was there.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Before I could answer, he nearly shoved me away from the door and put his hands up for the cops. At that point, I was scared, confused, crying, wanting answers. Alex was handcuffed and shouting that he still loved me and that it was an accident. Shortly after all this and trying to get answers from the police, my friend showed up. Between the vague info the cops gave me and the news article my friend showed me, I figured it all out. Turned out, Alex was not single when we had first started dating. He was married.
Starting point is 00:31:26 He never had a ring on any time we were together. I guess that also explained why he never stayed over and that it was usually on the evenings that we saw each other. However, that wasn't the worst part. The weekend, he said he was going out of town. he was supposed to be going with his wife, but instead of breaking it off with me, or potentially divorcing his wife, he killed her.
Starting point is 00:31:54 He smothered her or strangled her, and based on the time frames, called me shortly afterwards, and that's when he showed up at my place. I was horrified, scared, and heartbroken. Here, I thought I was rekindling a love I remembered when I had just slept with a killer, and he was trying to flee the country and frame it as him being romantic.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Apparently, it was taking a while for me to talk him into letting me go to my friends that night, so my friend called the cops, since she knew he was there with me, fearing that he may try something. I'm still not sure if he would have ever done anything to me, as he set it up like he was doing it For me, which made me feel even crappier. Someone had just lost their life because of me, and I've never been the same. He was sentenced to life with no parole, but he still tries to send me letters. So there's my crazy and sad ex story.
Starting point is 00:33:03 No matter how much you think you're in love, you should trust your friends. Sometimes they know and see more things that you may be blind. to. I never really had the best of luck in relationships. I had a few, but none really lasted more than a year or so, but the breakups were never nightmares or anything. It was usually a mutual thing. I'll be the first to admit that I am not perfect. I'm not the type to cheat, and I'm not abusive, but I may not have been that attentive, but I did try. Because it is really, relevance to the story, I will also add that I wasn't the best kid growing up. I liked to skip classes, break into places, and get into fights with other people at school.
Starting point is 00:34:05 It was always because of something stupid, like, he was flirting with your girl, or he was talking crap on your little bro, or something similar to that. When I was on the verge of being expelled, my parents gave me a last chance by sending me to an alternative school for troubled kids. The thing is, I hated it there. I was miserable, but they also had mentors and guidance counselors that actually gave a damn about us, compared to the ones that were obligated to at the schools that I went to. Between actually being listened to and being scared of that place,
Starting point is 00:34:47 it actually set me straight. I graduated from there, severed contact, with a lot of people that were a bad influence, and I really straightened up. Because of that, I would like to think that I became closer to my parents, too. Anyways, I always stayed close to home. I never moved out of state, barely left the city,
Starting point is 00:35:10 and I had my own life. I knew how to have fun, but also control myself. Again, I had a few relationships here and and there, but nothing too serious. Then, I met Shelby. Shelby was the sister of my friend's roommate. I went over to her place one time, and her roommate had just brought her sister over to stay for the weekend, because her duplex was being bug-bombed.
Starting point is 00:35:42 She was attractive, and I think she could tell that I was interested, by the way she kept smiling and flirting immediately, too. It didn't take long for her to get my number, except I wasn't the one that gave it to her. She hinted and bugged my friend for it, so she finally gave it to her, saying she thought it was cute and funny. I was okay with it because my thought was, hey, at least she knows how to take initiative, right?
Starting point is 00:36:16 We immediately started talking and snapping for hours throughout the day, even while at work. It wasn't maybe a few days in when she sent me a topless snap saying good night. Well, all right then. So, we started dating. I was over at my friends a lot that week while she was there, and then I spent time at her place and mine.
Starting point is 00:36:40 One good and bad thing about Shelby, though, was that she liked to party. So, we went to a lot of bars, Any party that she found out about, we were there. But she didn't just drink and have fun. She also liked to get high. Now, I did that in high school, but after finishing school, I quit and I hadn't touched it since.
Starting point is 00:37:08 I felt a little uncomfortable being around it at first because I tried to avoid it, but there was just something about her that drew you in. She either made me comfortable enough to be there, or she just had a way to make me let my guard down. I'd be in the room with her while she got high, but I always turned the stuff down. One night, though, after having a rough day at work, she wore me down and finally convinced me to just take up off,
Starting point is 00:37:40 and I was out cold. Or at least I didn't remember much of the night afterwards. Sadly, it became a normal thing. We probably partied every weekend, and even a few times during the week. I know it was just hot, but I was always smoking when I was in school, and then having it again really took a toll on me, and it started affecting everything else in my life, too. I started calling off stuff with my family and friends,
Starting point is 00:38:12 I started having troubles at work with coming in late, and my productivity was slipping. Not to mention how I was mentally feeling like crap about myself and where I was headed. My brother confronted me about it, and we got into a pretty heated argument, but I knew that he was right. I needed to knock this crap off before it got worse, so I tried discussing it with Shelby,
Starting point is 00:38:40 telling her I needed to get sober again for my health, and I tried to suggest that we should do it together. I thought I really had feelings for her at the time, so I thought I could help us both out. She did not see it that way. She berated me. She made fun of me, said I was pathetic, and that I just needed to grow up, and then she left.
Starting point is 00:39:05 I had never seen that side of her outside the bar fights I would occasionally have to pull her out of. I spent the day by myself thinking over stuff when she finally called and apologized and then came over. Except she acted like the conversation had never happened. She brought more beer and just wanted to do more of the same. This back and forth continued for about two months or so, and I felt like crap. I hated where I was going. I hated how I was feeling.
Starting point is 00:39:41 and I hated that I didn't know what to do about Shelby. Unfortunately, it wouldn't change until I lost my job. I was late one too many times, and I was let go. I came home and Shelby was there, and I told her what happened and that it was a wake-up call that I needed to fix myself with or without her. It became a huge fight. She actually smacked me and scratched me multiple times,
Starting point is 00:40:11 to the point that I stood with the door open yelling at her to get out as she continued to hit me. I refused to hit her or even grab her in fear of what she might do, so that's all I could think to do. Apparently someone else had called the cops, though, and they finally had her escorted out. For days, she tried calling and texting me, telling me to take her back and talk to her. She had left a few things at my house,
Starting point is 00:40:38 and I packed them up, put them in a bag, bag at my front door and told her to come get them. She sat there banging on my door for almost an hour, until someone else came out and told her to leave. She continued to call and text me between pleading and threatening that I would regret this, and then I just stopped hearing from her for about a week. I thought she had finally moved on. Not at all.
Starting point is 00:41:06 I tried to hang out with my friends to keep me occupied, but they were ignoring my calls. or giving me lame excuses as to why they couldn't, and I didn't understand why. This only caused me to feel worse and become more reclusive and depressed. My parents even called me one afternoon and offered to have me over for dinner that night, and I was actually excited because I was being invited somewhere. However, my stomach just sank when I walked in and saw Shelby.
Starting point is 00:41:39 She had a black eye, bruises down her arm, and she looked like she'd been crying. The problem, though, was that my parents and my brother were there looking at me like they were heartbroken. Shelby had told my family that I got her into drugs, and that she was pregnant and I was beating on her to get her to lose the baby. My own parents believed that crazy woman over me, and they threatened to call the cops or for me to go to rehab.
Starting point is 00:42:09 I tried to reason with them, ask her when she found out she was pregnant, showproof anything, but she just cried and hid behind my mom. I was seething. But of course, nothing I said they believed. With no other option, I just left. I called my friend, Lynn, who was the roommate of Shelby's sister
Starting point is 00:42:31 because we'd been friends for years in hopes that she would listen to me, but she told me that Shelby had gone over there saying the same thing. Thankfully, Lynn was hesitant to believe her. She knew I was a troubled kid, but she also knew that I was not like that anymore, and I was never abusive or aggressive.
Starting point is 00:42:52 She started asking her all these questions to which she would give vague responses or say she didn't remember, but apparently she was growing suspicious, and Shelby said she needed to rest and retreated to her sister's room. Finally, someone, was on my side and believed me.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I just had to figure out how to change my parents' mind. Lynn knew my parents and how strict they were with me, so she tried calling them and asking what was going on too, but they were still hesitant to believe her because they claimed they knew their own kid. So I had to try to fix it myself. Thankfully, I live in a state where one party consent to record someone was legal, so I called her and invited her over so we could work things out.
Starting point is 00:43:43 She came over, and she acted like the past few weeks had never even happened. She hugged and kissed me, said she knew I would come around eventually, and I gritted my teeth while we had dinner. That's when I started asking the questions. I played along, like I loved her, and really wanted to be back with her and asked her about the bruises. She said she hit herself in the face with a bottle repeatedly until she gave herself a black eye
Starting point is 00:44:11 and then purposely started a bar fight knowing that they would cause her injuries. So, I fed into her ego trip and told her how she really got me with the pregnancy too. She actually laughed and said she was worried my parents were going to ask for proof because then she would have to find someone to take a test for her. So, I asked her. her, acting confused then that she wasn't pregnant and she admitted that she wasn't.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Finally, I snuck away to the bathroom, called the cops because I knew she was going to lose it, and marched back into my living room with newfound confidence telling her to leave. As expected, she went off. She said I just used her, and that she was going to tell everyone that I raped her and that she started smacking me and yelling. Thankfully, the police showed up while she was on top of me, hitting me, and grabbed her immediately. You can bet your ass. I pressed charges and a restraining order, and I never saw her again. It took a while for my parents to finally talk to me, and even longer for them to apologize for not trusting me, but we are better now. That was over a decade ago. I'm actually happily married now, and I have that.
Starting point is 00:45:33 been sober ever since. I don't even drink because that gives me nightmares. I will say, I have gotten some friend requests on Facebook from her, though. Typically, it's like once or twice a year, and she's making a new account each time because I block them all. Even better, according to her profile, she's married with a child. Nope, I'm good, Shelby. I never, ever wants to meet or see you. Again.
Starting point is 00:46:13 This whole situation that I'm about to go through happened back in the mid-80s. Back before anyone had a cell phone or the internet, and back before everyone knew what everyone else was up to. Basically, in a small town, everyone got wind of everything through the grapevine. And most of it was gossip or just half true. Not a lot different than how things are now. just a lot less technology. I was a sophomore in high school,
Starting point is 00:46:48 so I was still very much getting my grips on life, and I wasn't really in tune with adults or what most people would consider creepy. On top of this, I was a straight-A student, and my ability to pick up on social cues was legitimately non-existent. Aside from my awkward demeanor, I was also the kind of kid to be a bit of a teacher's pet.
Starting point is 00:47:17 This is where Ms. Nelson enters the picture. Ms. Nelson was the art teacher at my school, and she was also my favorite teacher. I would think, after this, I could safely say that I was her favorite student. She was probably in her late 20s. She definitely wasn't that old. I was actually what was basically her teacher's assistant while I was in her class. We got along pretty well. I didn't have a lot of friends back in high school, like I said, socially awkward,
Starting point is 00:47:55 so I think I kind of latched on to her since she was nice to me, and it seemed like she really appreciated me. I took two different art classes in freshman year, and I always did a great job with my projects. and I just assumed that that was why she had taken a liking to me. Because I considered her my friend, I would oftentimes stay after school to help her out with whatever extra thing she needed assistance with.
Starting point is 00:48:25 That year, she had actually told me that she was having a bit of a get-together at her house with a few of her friends from college, and she told me that I was welcome to come along. I asked my parents if I could go over there, and they were adamant that it wasn't a good idea. I pleaded with them a bit, but they said they didn't feel comfortable with me being around a bunch of 20-somethings at a party, and me being the only 16-year-old there.
Starting point is 00:48:57 It kind of irked me, but in the end, I just accepted what my parents told me and moved on. I told her during class that day that I wasn't allowed to come over for the party, and she said that she would have a talk with my parents. I told her that they were adamant, but she said they just needed convincing and that she would go talk to them. In the end, I'd just let it go and I moved forward. I hadn't heard anything from neither my parents nor Ms. Nelson about it at all,
Starting point is 00:49:32 so I just kind of assumed that my parents told her no, and again that was the end of it. Then came the day of her party, which was a Friday. Of that, I'm actually certain. On Fridays, I didn't have to ride the bus home because my mom had them off, and she would always pick me up from school. They were also the only day that I couldn't stay after, because she had to pick me up, then pick up my younger sister right after,
Starting point is 00:50:03 so I had to be outside on time. The day came to an end, and I was about to leave when Ms. Nelson approached me in the hallway. I said hi, and she asked me if I was ready to go. I kind of looked at her confused and asked where we were going. She laughed and said, Did your parents not tell you that you were allowed to come over? I talked to them, and they said it was fine. I was confused, sure, but also surprised that they said it was cool.
Starting point is 00:50:37 so I immediately jumped up and said let's go. I grabbed my books and followed her out to her car, where we got in and headed out to what I thought was going to be her place. Well, as I would soon find out, my parents did not tell her it was okay, and we were not going to her place. I don't know where we were going. She pulled out of the parking lot in a bit of a hurry,
Starting point is 00:51:07 I remember she actually cut a car off when she made a right-hand turn. Come to find out, that car that she had cut off was actually my mother. This is where things got a bit nerve-wracking. She was driving. I was sitting there in her car and just kind of thinking of what was going to happen at the party. This was the first party I'd ever been to with adults. Then I heard a horn start going off. behind us.
Starting point is 00:51:38 I hear Miss Nelson look up and say, Who the hell is that? What do they want? I glanced behind us. Sure enough, it was my mother in her dark blue sedan thing. My wave and say, Oh, that's my mom. I think she's trying to get your attention.
Starting point is 00:51:56 As I was waving and smiling, thinking nothing of it, I saw the look on my mom's face go from one of anger to genuine worry. like it had clicked at that moment that I wasn't aware of the danger I was apparently in. Like I said, I have a really bad inability to read social cues. After a few moments, I realized that Ms. Nelson wasn't pulling over. So I said, Hey, I think she wants you to stop so she can talk to me.
Starting point is 00:52:29 And that was the moment that had dawned on me, right when Ms. Nelson started looking angry at the situation. At that moment, it clicked, much like it had for my mom. She hadn't called them at all. She had never spoken to them to get permission for me to go to her party, and my mom wasn't trying to get her attention to talk to me. She was freaking out because she was literally watching a teacher kidnap her 16-year-old daughter right in front of her.
Starting point is 00:52:59 I started freaking out, and I really wasn't sure what to do. I asked her to pull over so I could talk to my mom and she ignored me. She blew through several stop signs, and she even ran a red light trying to get away from my mother, who, I have to say, was doing a fantastic job at keeping up. This whole thing went on for what felt like forever. She kept turning, running stop signs, cutting through side roads, but each time my mother would be right there behind her and slamming her horn.
Starting point is 00:53:33 After somewhere between 10 to 20 minutes of chasing us, Ms. Nelson just looked defeated. She pulled up to one of the stop signs and stopped. She didn't look at me. She didn't say anything. She just stopped and stared forward, like she was giving me the choice of what to do. Seeing as how I was seriously horrified at what was happening, I shoved the door open and almost literally leapt out of the car. As soon as my feet hit the pavement, she spun her tires and took off down the road.
Starting point is 00:54:10 My mom pulled up to me, parked her car, ran over and grabbed me in her arms and pulled me in tight. It honestly felt like she was about to strangle me with how hard she was hugging me. But I just kind of hugged her back and started crying. So, the aftermath of all this, my mother drove back to the high school and went into the office and spoke to the principal. She called my dad and asked him to come and pick up my sister, but she and I had to stay at the high school and wait for the police. When they got there, I explained the situation as best as I could.
Starting point is 00:54:47 My mom told them her side, and they said they would check in with the teacher. They did, however, say, there may not be a whole lot that they could do, mostly because they would have to prove that I was in her car. Thankfully, they could. When I jumped out and she took off, I left my backpack, complete with my name written on the inside tag, and all my books complete with my name written in them. And all of it was sitting nicely in her back seat.
Starting point is 00:55:18 With that, they were able to take her in and question her, and, along with my statement and my mother's statement, that I wasn't allowed to go with her, make a charge her with attempted kidnapping. So that's the story of how I was basically kidnapped by a teacher that I thought was just being really friendly with me. Come to find out, she was actually a bit obsessed with me. To my surprise, she had called my parents and asked if I could come over,
Starting point is 00:55:49 and when they said no, she was really pushy about it. And she kept saying that it would be good for me. When they continued to say no, she said that they didn't know what was best for me and that they needed to reconsider. When the cops raided her house, she had several pictures of me taken from when I was a freshman, by her desk in her bedroom.
Starting point is 00:56:12 Even worse, she had Polaroids of me from when I was outside of Class 2. There were a few picks when I was swimming at the pool during the summer break, a few pictures of me in my backyard, and a few of me just waiting outside for my mom to come and get me. My guess, that's how she knew that this was a regular thing. She was seriously stalking me and watching my every move. Apparently, she had a really weird thing for me, something that I never caught on to,
Starting point is 00:56:47 and something that I never saw coming. She was arrested and charged, like I said, but it was attempted kidnapping, and I don't think she served very much time. She was adamant through her whole trial that it was a misunderstanding, but then I testified against her, saying that she had tricked me and all that, and it was pretty open and shut. Thankfully, this didn't leave a huge scar on me, like I think it would for most kids.
Starting point is 00:57:18 I moved on, I was able to move forward with my life, and although I never really never. really liked the art teacher that replaced her, I hope that I never meet Ms. Nelson, ever again. So, my story starts off only a few years ago, with me being a single woman that had literally just turned 21, and fresh off the tales of a relationship that I'd been in since I was 17. A relationship that I honestly thought was going to be the one, with a guy that. that I thought I was going to get married to. Unfortunately, after three and a half years,
Starting point is 00:58:10 he dropped a bombshell that he wanted to move to Texas to attend a college. We live in the northwest, and I couldn't leave my family behind like that, so, yeah, things kind of fell apart the day he decided to leave. That's not what the story's about, though, and he was a great guy. No, this story is about, though. is about a guy that I met not long after that breakup, a guy that I wish would have just stayed part of the background.
Starting point is 00:58:42 After my last boyfriend left, I fell into a really hard depression. I would go as far as calling myself vulnerable. I had loved him. He was great, and he just kind of got up and left me. I know now that he was simply thinking about his future, and that I should have been happy for him, but it was my first serious relationship. It had been several years, and I was hit pretty hard by it. Because of that, my sister decided that she could help me out of my slump
Starting point is 00:59:16 by talking me into signing up for dating apps. I was incredibly hesitant at first, but she was very pushy and very convincing. She had actually had a lot of luck when she signed up for the one that she was pushing me onto, who, she had actually met her husband, my brother-in-law on it. And they were super happy. Because of this, she had assumed that I, too, would find a miracle if I just logged in and swiped on the right guy. I didn't foresee that being a thing that would happen, but you never know, right? So I did as she said.
Starting point is 00:59:57 I signed up for the same app that she signed up for. she showed me how to do everything, though what more is there to it than look at a profile and swipe. Then after a few days, I actually found a guy that seemed like he and I would get along. His listed interests were similar to mine, and after we had chatted for a bit, he seemed like he was a legitimately good guy.
Starting point is 01:00:23 We set up a time for us to go out and get dinner at a local bar and grill. When we met, he looked just, just like the picture. And we had talked about all the things that we had in common. I was expecting a catfish, but I honestly was surprised at how much like his profile he really was. We had a great night chatting, and we enjoyed our moderately priced dinner together.
Starting point is 01:00:50 I thought he and I actually had something good going, and I was ready for that second date to happen. Then, the next morning, I got a text from him that was absolutely out of nowhere. He said he had an awesome time and that he seriously liked me, but then mentioned that he wasn't ready for a relationship and didn't see us being anything more than friends. I was a bit annoyed with the whole thing.
Starting point is 01:01:20 I liked the guy and thought he was going to be a possible candidate for a relationship, but hey, if he's not ready, then he's not ready. and I told him that was fine, and then repeated his sentiment that I would love to be friends and hang out still. And that was where I kind of expected it all to end, but it didn't. After basically telling me that he didn't want to be anything more than just friends, he started texting me non-stop. He would message me every morning to say good morning, which it was cute at first, but it quickly got annoying when it was literally at the same time every single day.
Starting point is 01:02:02 Plus, again, we were just friends. He made it clear that he didn't want anything more. I was a bit crass with him one of the mornings. Basically, I told him that, while it was nice to get a good morning, he didn't have to text me every single day. He said it was all right, and then he apologized. Then, he started to say, calling me frequently.
Starting point is 01:02:27 It got to a point where I would ignore his calls and let them go to voicemail, which made it even more annoying because he would leave a voicemail each time and then would call back within ten minutes. The times I would answer, he would tell me that he was thinking about me, and he wanted to know how I was doing. It just started to feel really weird. He broke it off with me, and now he was being the obsessive one?
Starting point is 01:02:58 After a while, I'd had it. I told him that he needed to back off. He didn't want to be anything more than friends than we would just be friends, but friends didn't bother each other constantly like this. He took it a little hard, but then said he would leave me alone, and again, apologized. He said that he was in a weird place,
Starting point is 01:03:21 and he didn't mean to annoy me or cause me any issues. and that was the last time we spoke for quite a while, which I took to mean he was done with me. Oh, how wrong I was. There was one day that I had come home from work to find my room a mess. Everything was a disaster. My clothes were strewn everywhere, my papers for class. It was like someone had gone into my room and was looking for something very specific,
Starting point is 01:03:50 but had no idea where it was. So they just threw it. everything around in a hectic mess. I brought this up to my roommate, and she said she hadn't been home all day and that she hadn't gone into my room. I believed her. She wasn't the type to go through my things, or really lie, so she decided to call her dad for a suggestion on what we should do.
Starting point is 01:04:15 He had us walk through the main things. Check for anything missing. Make sure everything is locked. Tell the landlord. We did everything. he told us to, and the landlord actually made a further suggestion. Get a camera and point it in the hallways. This actually was an idea that I kind of liked, so.
Starting point is 01:04:37 The next day I went out and bought a nest camera, and I set it up in the living room to point down the hallway toward where the bedrooms were. There was nothing for the longest time, and I thought that maybe it was just a one-time thing, until about two weeks later. I got notified that there was motion in the hallways while I was at a Starbucks with my roommate. We were both there.
Starting point is 01:05:05 The landlord hadn't scheduled maintenance, and nobody else had a key. I opened the app to see what it was, and wouldn't you know it, there was the guy that I met on the dating app, opening my roommate's door and walking through the hallway in, to my bedroom.
Starting point is 01:05:25 She immediately called her dad. He told us to meet him there. We were just down the street, so we got there a moment or two before he did. He showed up with his sidearm ready and told us to call the cops and to not come in unless he said to. I was a bit nervous about this whole situation.
Starting point is 01:05:45 There was a guy that I thought was all right less than two months ago, sneaking through our place. My roommate's dad was regularly, to shoot him if he had to, she was calling the cops, and I was just kind of standing there, ready for all hell to break loose. Thankfully, it didn't. At least not how I anticipated.
Starting point is 01:06:08 After a few moments of shouting inside, her dad yelling for this guy to get on the ground, he actually hollered out the window for me to come inside, so I did. When I got into my room, I saw her dad yelling for this guy to get on the ground. I saw her dad pinning the guy to the ground, and him wearing my underwear. I just kind of stood there, my mouth wide open, my mind trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Her dad looked up at me and said something like, I'm going to guess he's not supposed to be in here. I told him no, and I had to leave before I started to laugh my back end off.
Starting point is 01:06:49 The police showed up, and they let him. and put his clothes back on, but he was charged for breaking and entering. Come to find out, he'd actually done this a few times. And we didn't notice. But then he decided to make a disaster of my room when I told him that I didn't want to talk to him anymore. My roommate, in her infinite wisdom, had taken up smoking pot, but didn't want me to know. So, she left her window unlocked and was blowing the smoke outside. because the window was unlocked and we were at ground level,
Starting point is 01:07:25 he'd found an easy access point, as long as she wasn't home. I have no idea what to say about him wearing my underwear, other than he had a really unhealthy obsession with me, but I won't judge. So this was my one and only stalker, and my only time ever using a dating app. After this, I kind of just swore off dating for a while,
Starting point is 01:07:50 while. Someday I'll find someone for me, but until then, Mr. I'm going to break in and wear your underwear. Let's not meet again. This happened a few years ago, somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I remember that I was doing some Christmas shopping for my hubby, so I had to go shopping with someone that wasn't him while he was at work. Normally, that wouldn't be so bad. But he worked nights at the time,
Starting point is 01:08:36 so I was having to go out to Walmart to find something for him with pretty much any friend of mine that didn't sleep. Thankfully, I had a pretty good friend named Shannon. That was very much the type to stay up all night, and she agreed that she would go with me to find, find something for him. I knew a few things that he wanted, specifically a couple video games that he had been clamoring for for the last couple of months, and I really didn't want to spend a whole lot of time there.
Starting point is 01:09:10 We got into the Wal-Mart, and I told Shannon that I knew exactly what I needed to get back from the electronics department. She asked me if it was okay if she went and did just a bit of grocery shopping, and that she would meet me in the front of the store when she was ready. I was a bit annoyed. I was kind of hoping that she would stick by my side so I wasn't alone in the store, but at the same time, just knowing that she was around somewhere was more than enough for me to feel better.
Starting point is 01:09:44 I know, it's a Walmart. What's the worst that could happen? But honestly, you never know. Anyways, I head back to the electronics. section, and I'm looking at the game shelf to try and find a copy of Super Smash Brothers when I'm starting to get the feeling that someone was watching me. You know the one. That feeling when your hair kind of stands up and you feel a bit on edge.
Starting point is 01:10:12 At first, I thought that maybe Shannon was going to try to jump out at me and scare me, but when I turned to look, I saw a random guy wearing a Walmart-branded vest, holding his phone out and pointing it in my direction. As soon as I turned, he quickly turned to look another way and started talking, like he was having a conversation with somebody. I didn't think much of it, really. I just kind of assumed he was on a FaceTime call or something, and that he realized he was facing me and that it was kind of awkward.
Starting point is 01:10:49 It wasn't a huge deal to me. I noted what games I was needing to grab, and I went over to find someone that had a key. Of course, there was nobody there. So, I decided I would walk around a bit to see if someone in the electronics department would show up. As I'm turning down the aisle with earphones, I noticed that he too went down the aisle, but on the other end. And he was kind of just looking around like he was supposed to be there. It was then that I started thinking he was being a bit weird, but again, he worked there, so whatever. Because this guy was being a bit of a weirdo, I decided I would just go to the front and talk to someone at customer service about getting the key to electronics, since there was no one but this guy here.
Starting point is 01:11:43 I walked past him in the aisle to head for the front of the store, and as soon as I actually got by him, I heard what sounded like a camera shutter sound. I stopped and turned to face this guy and asked what the hell he was doing, but by the time I turned around, I saw him turning away to walk as fast as he could the other way. At this point, I was livid. The first time I thought it was nothing, but now I was certain that this guy was trying to sneak pictures of me from behind.
Starting point is 01:12:15 I stepped toward him, and I very loudly asked him what his name was. He just kept walking away. I kept yelling at him, asking who the hell he was, what his problem was, what his name was, basically anything that would get the attention of another employee. Thankfully, it did. One of the electronics employees heard me and rushed over to the guy and stopped him. He asked me what was going on, and I told him that this guy was taking pictures of me from behind, and that he had followed me around the electronics aisles with his house.
Starting point is 01:12:50 phone out and the camera on. The guy in electronics calls up for a CSM to come to the back. The whole time this guy is trying his hardest to get away from him, telling him that he has to go. After a few moments of waiting for the manager
Starting point is 01:13:06 and this employee trying to pull away from the electronics guy, creepy employee decided that he'd had enough and took a swing at the electronics guy to get away. It connected, and then he started booking it toward the front of the store. Thankfully, that CSM was nearby and saw what happened.
Starting point is 01:13:27 He actually chased the guy and got him to the ground. Then they called the police to sort this whole thing out. So, what did we learn from the police and this, the CSM? This guy was a super creep. And when I mean super creep, I mean absolute skis. When he was confronted about taking pictures, he actually opened his phone and, come to find out,
Starting point is 01:13:57 he had taken pictures of women in the changing rooms, under stall walls, and just random girls of various ages throughout the store. What's even worse, he didn't work there. He used to work there, but he had managed to sneak the vest out when he got fired for following people like a creep.
Starting point is 01:14:17 He'd been doing this for a while. coming into the store in a uniform that was only slightly outdated, following women around to take their pictures. He was charged, obviously, and I'm pretty sure he spent a good amount of time in prison. I never went back to that particular Walmart, mostly because every time I tried, I would have a panic attack. A good lesson to take away from this situation,
Starting point is 01:14:45 ladies, always be aware of your surroundings. and if it feels like someone is watching you, check your six. Also, never go alone when going to Walmart. Because some people, even the ones dressed in a trusting manner, could absolutely be the creep that's taking your picture. I have a bit of an off-kilter story that kind of teeters on the edge of a stalker story, but also is just a generalized creepy story. This actually took place in 2020,
Starting point is 01:15:31 and is one of those things that scared the hell out of me, but is also kind of a bit of an unsolved mystery for me. For the record, my wife and I are in our mid-20s. I'm 26 and she's 24. We have a four-year-old daughter named Angel. Angel is a super sweet and sweet, very trusting little girl, and she thinks that everybody is her friend. On top of that, she's also not shy whatsoever, and she wants to have every conversation with
Starting point is 01:16:06 everyone in the world. She's also super imaginative, and talks to her imaginary friends as well as her stuffies all the time. So, it's not a big deal to hear her talk when there's no one else in the room. Like I said, this was back in 2020, a time when we were all going a little stir-crazy, I like to think. I was home from work, and my wife was a nurse, so she was working hours that were absolutely insane. I did my best to pick up all the slack at home while she was working 60 hours a week, and basically not sleeping whatsoever. her. Because we were both super busy, we, unfortunately, had to rely on the small TV in Angel's room to keep her occupied,
Starting point is 01:16:57 which, thankfully, there were tons of cartoons on DVD that we had, and she figured out how to work the DVD player. This meant that, again, talking coming from her room could be expected, as it could be her playing, her watching a cartoon or talking to the cartoon. She's a very chatty kid. So one night, I think it was in August, I was cleaning up the house and trying to get dinner ready to go. When I walked upstairs and I heard Angel talking. The conversation seemed pretty innocent.
Starting point is 01:17:36 She was explaining the plots to the show that she was watching. Some show about little kids being superheroes and saving the day from minor things that really didn't require a hero. I don't really remember much beyond that, just hearing her talk about the characters and how strong they were. I thought it was cute, and that was it. I went back downstairs and went back to finishing up dinner. When I was done, I went back upstairs to go and get her so she could eat,
Starting point is 01:18:10 and then we could get her ready to take a bath and head to bed. I opened her door to see her standing on her bed and facing out her window, which was at this point wide open. Upon seeing it, I was a bit taken aback. She's not supposed to open that window and she knows it. Then, there's the part of, who the hell is she talking to? When I opened the door and saw it, I immediately raised my tone and asked her who she was talking to. I wasn't trying to scare her, but something was up. She turned to me quickly and said,
Starting point is 01:18:49 Sorry, Daddy. I again asked who she was talking to as I stepped forward toward the window. I looked out into the yard, and sure enough, I saw a grown man running through the backyard and jumping my fence. My initial instinct was to run outside and chase him. But I snapped back to the realization that I had a full, four-year-old I needed to take care of, and a very tired wife that was about to be home. I grabbed Angel, I took her downstairs to the dinner table, and I asked her again who that man was.
Starting point is 01:19:28 She said his name was Dave, and that he was our neighbor. We didn't have a neighbor named Dave, at least not an immediate neighbor with that name. I then asked her a few more leading questions, and I think I may have scared her, because she started crying and asking if she was in trouble. I told her she wasn't, but I needed her to tell me what they were talking about. She told me that they were talking about her cartoon show, and that they talked about her toys. She told him that her mom was a doctor, she's a nurse, but to a four-year-old that's pretty much the same thing, and that I worked for the government.
Starting point is 01:20:08 I asked her what he had talked to her about, and she said that he told her about his daughter, daughter and how they were the same age, and then asked her if she wanted to come and meet her. That was a terrifying thought. Because I know for a fact, Angel would have said yes to that question, and that guy had probably gained her trust. Then she dropped an even worse bombshell. She told me that the last time he came by, he showed her a picture of his horse and asked if she liked horses.
Starting point is 01:20:41 It was the statement, the last time that threw me off, hard. I asked her if he'd been there before, and she told me he'd been coming by a lot over the past week. This guy had been developing a rapport with my daughter, gaining her trust, showing her things that she liked, and telling her that he had a daughter that she could be friends with, all over around a week. and the whole time, I was home, none the wiser. This guy was basically grooming my daughter into trusting him, with me less than 200 feet away. That night, I had Angel sleep in our bed with my wife,
Starting point is 01:21:25 and I slept on the couch. That weekend, I went out and got some security cameras for the exterior of the house just in case he ever came back, and I made sure the lock on the window was connected better, and that she couldn't undo it anymore. Thankfully, this guy never came back, and we never saw him again. I'm still personally petrified at the thought of what he could have done,
Starting point is 01:21:51 and I'm just thankful it didn't go any further, and that I happened to walk in at the exact moment that I did. That was today's episode of the As the Raven Dreams podcast.
