The Devil Wears Prada 2 in Theaters Friday.
Good evening.
back to another episode of Raven Investigates.
Tonight we will be heading up north to discuss a case of a woman that simply went for a walk
and was never seen alive again.
A case about a woman that went missing several years ago, a case with very little in ways
of leads, evidence, or sense from the day it all began, all the way to today.
Tonight, we'll be investigating the case of Thelma Kroll.
July 11, 2015, approximately 7.23 a.m.
It's a fairly normal morning in the grassy Boulevard area of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The sun is coming up.
People are starting their day or moving through their typical routines.
Most of them were likely preparing for their weekend.
and thinking about what they were going to accomplish on that particular Saturday.
Thelma Crowle, a 57-year-old grandmother was no different from her neighbors.
She started her day the same way a number of other people do,
by getting in a bit of exercise.
She was well known to be the kind of person that would go out and take a long walk,
taking in the fresh air and just enjoying the morning.
Unfortunately, on this morning, things would take a turn that no one could have seen coming.
This was the last day that anyone saw Thelma alive.
Going back a bit on this story and reiterating what I said,
there is little information, a lot of speculation, and very little in ways of sense,
and I wasn't exaggerating.
The time of her disappearance was essentially all that was known about the case for a long time.
As far as everyone was concerned, she simply disappeared and no one knew where she had gone.
Obviously, as time passed, there have been developments, and while this may seem like a strange structure for an investigative episode,
I think it's best that we look at the information as it's come to be known in order.
The Thelma Crull missing Facebook page does a fantastic job of archiving the information in chronological order as the person that runs it posts regularly, and has even posted as recently as July 11th of 2021.
As soon as Thelma was declared missing, the community got together to search for her.
They printed flyers, created search parties, held vigils to light the way home for Thelma.
Pictures of people that were potential witnesses were posted, people were crossed off the list,
and every possibility was weighed by the family and friends as they navigated the days without Thelma.
On August 18th of 2015, it was reported that a $10,000 reward was put up by Transit Union,
the company that Robert Kroll, Thelma's husband, had driven for since 2007 for information.
By September 16th, this amount was doubled to 20,000 with money raised by family and friends.
By the six-month mark, there had been little in ways of movement.
The possibility that she was abducted had been floated by officials.
It was determined that she likely disappeared somewhere close to 8 a.m.
Within this time frame, fairly early in the search, a pair of Thelma's glasses were found at the Valley Guard,
Kroden's Community Center, and that's where the case sat for a long time.
Time continued passing, as March, so did Thelma's 58th birthday, a day that the family had
to live without her.
That same month, more volunteers went out and hung up more signs in hopes that someone
would come forth with more information.
As the days of 2016 passed, the family held many events to raise awareness, to try to get
any information and eventually the calendar rolled over to the first anniversary of Thelma's
disappearance. At this point, the glasses and the time that she may have disappeared
continued to be the only information that was released, and the only information anyone had
to go on. Pretty quickly after the first anniversary, the Winnipeg police had identified a potential
witness, and then immediately ID'd them and dismissed them as being involved.
By October of 2016, the police released a tip that they had received that was apparently
worth following, specifically that Thelma may have been seen with the heavy-set man on the day
of her disappearance.
The information that was released was that the man was likely to be 5'8 inches, 270 pounds,
and with a bowl-style haircut.
This added more fuel to the possibilities that she may have been abducted.
plus the statement by police that Thelma likely experienced some kind of distress when everything happened.
Their idea of the distress came from the fact that they had found both her glasses and by this point her cell phone, both fully intact.
This information was a great addition to the little bit of details that had been already out there.
But it didn't change things much, and the calendar eventually rolled over to the second anniversary.
July of 2017.
By this point, the police had received hundreds of tips.
A few worth following, but the information that had been given to the public was literally all they had to go on.
The police had investigated any leads they could.
They had followed trails that went nowhere, and most people would have considered this case cold,
but this was a statement that the Winnipeg police and Thelma's family refused.
to make. They refused to consider this case cold, and they vowed to press on.
Around this time, there was also a composite sketch released of the aforementioned
heavy-set man, a huge step forward for this investigation.
Or so it seemed. The situation became all too familiar, and while the information was
growing, things continued to slow down, and the agonizing mystery continued on to the third
anniversary. In late 2018, things would take a hard turn, and this search for a missing person
turned into a certain homicide investigation. In October, the RCMP were called out when a hunter
found what they believed to be a human skull. When officials showed up, they had determined that the
remains had been in this location for a while, though they couldn't pinpoint how long exactly.
DNA testing on the skull confirmed what no one wanted to be the case.
The skull belonged to Thelma.
The skull was found around 50 kilometers southeast of where she was last seen in Winnipeg,
but the area was one that she was likely familiar with.
This, in addition to the idea that she was abducted, led the investigators to one possibility.
She was murdered by an individual.
possibly the one in the composite sketch.
And this investigation had to become something more serious.
Time continued to pass without movement, and the next tip came in July of 2019.
At this point, four years after her disappearance.
They were looking for someone that drove a gold four-door sedan,
possibly a Toyota, Hyundai, or Honda, between the years of 2005,
to 2010, that was considered to be in good condition.
This person was considered a possible witness,
and was not considered related to the prior mentioned person,
but at this point there was no other information on the car.
No plates, no registration, nothing.
This leads us to what is considered the final point of this case,
and it's unfortunately a year old.
In July of 2020, a full five years, half a decade after Thelma disappeared,
and two years after she was confirmed to be deceased,
Robert Kroll put up a $100,000 reward for information about her abduction and murder.
By this point, Robert had publicly said that he had no faith that the police would solve
the case, and who could blame him. There had been no arrests, and the last information released
on the case was about the car over a year prior. So, unfortunately, that's pretty much how this
investigation ends. This may not seem like a standard episode of R.I., nor may it feel like a
complete investigation, but this is really all there is to go on. Thelma Crowell was a
a well-loved member of her community, as is evident by the Facebook page's photos, of all the
search parties, the vigils, the comments that are left on each post, there are a significant
number of people that still see the posts on the page, and still like and heart them,
people that still comment, and most of them all say that they have not and will not. Forget Thelma.
Based on the available information, Thelma didn't have any enemies.
She didn't have anyone that would want her dead.
She was your everyday grandmother.
This whole case is rather bizarre, and her murder makes little sense.
And unfortunately, at this point, there has been very little movement.
The family hasn't given up.
The police have stated that,
They are not giving up.
And while things may seem like they're hopeless, as we're now six years past the date of her disappearance,
it is important to hold on to the possibility that there will be more information.
I've mentioned it a few times, but the Thelma Croll missing Facebook page has kept this information archived,
and they continue to post, albeit nowhere near as common.
I hope this family does find closure on this case someday,
in the future, and I hope an arrest is made, and that they can finally rest easier, because
Thelma deserves justice.
