Starting point is 00:01:15 I just found out about this sub-reddit, and I thought that it was worth posting. My friend Craig and I made plans to go hang out with our friend, Jeremy, and his new girlfriend. Neither of us had to work the next day, so we grabbed some beers and made our way to Jeremy's mom's apartment complex, where Jair was temporarily staying. When we got there, we went out into the woods behind the apartment complex to drink. This wasn't just a little patch of trees, but a good-sized patch of forest. For context, this was in New York State. It was a nice fall day, late afternoon, and the sun was still out.
Starting point is 00:01:58 We finished the beers and decided to go get more. so we go to the store to get some more beer and head back to the apartments and enter the woods. This was autumn and the light outside was right at that stage where it starts to very quickly fade. We underestimated just how dark it would be once we were in the woods and how fast the light was fading away. We planned on making a fire but didn't really count in it being so dark when we got back.
Starting point is 00:02:28 So we're walking into this sort of clearing-end, area, from where we can choose to head off in a few different directions. We're having a good time, laughing, talking, but something not too far in the distance catches my eye. It's too dark to tell, but I swear that I can see a very large figure. Not too big. It's probably a tree or just your eyes messing with you. So, as Jeremy is gabbing in the background, I ask Craig as an aside if he can see something standing up ahead. And he's like,
Starting point is 00:03:04 No, where? Oh, wait, there. Oh, crap. We were still walking, and it was becoming clear that I wasn't seeing things. There was a very large person standing in the forest up ahead, apparently facing us. So I tried to get Jeremy's attention
Starting point is 00:03:21 without cluing the big guy in that we've noticed him. Just in case something sketchy is going on, which I get the serious feeling there, is. We tell Jeremy that there's a person up ahead, but Jeremy is in a jovial, no-chill state, and he exclaims, holy crap, is that Bigfoot? We humor him and laugh, but it's clear to Craig and I that this is actually creepy, and probably not a safe situation. And it's clear that Jeremy is not understanding that. It's hard to communicate the pacing of our approach onto the guy. But essentially we had gotten too close not to acknowledge him,
Starting point is 00:04:05 partially because it took us a moment to get Jeremy's attention, and partially because we weren't trying to just turn around and run like we were scared. There were four of us, and one of him, after all. But this was a big guy. Not supernaturally big or anything, and not like he was jacked or anything like that. Just a naturally gigantic dude. very tall and heavy without being particularly fat.
Starting point is 00:04:33 And he was just standing there, in the middle of the forest, in the dark, alone. So as we approach this guy and just sort of say hello, Jeremy, the absolute fool that he was, gets way too close into this guy's personal space as he enthusiastically tells him about how scary he looks, standing in the woods alone. We thought you were an... alien or something, bro.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I thought you were going to jump up and blah. Jeremy mimes an extra set of teeth coming out of his mouth like a xenomorph from the alien versus predators movie, all up in this guy's face. To be clear, Jeremy is not trying to be intimidating or a jerk in any way. He's trying to be friendly and joking around with the guy, but he is literally leaning into this dude and practically sticking his hands in his face. with his impression of an alien. Did I mention that Jeremy was kind of a moron?
Starting point is 00:05:34 Jeremy was kind of a moron. Love you, Jeremy, but you were kind of a moron. And Jeremy's poor girlfriend, who was a few years younger than us, and very shy, was clearly terrified, to which Jair was also oblivious. So, Craig and I are both standing here, kind of trying to brainstorm a way out of the situation, Jeremy is clearly too dense to get it if we say that we have to go.
Starting point is 00:06:02 He'd be like, what? We just got here, aren't we having a fire? And we were trying to seem confident and in control of the situation. The big guy says, Oh, you guys are drinking. I got some drinks too. And he walks over to the tree line where he has a bag laying beside a tree. He reaches into the bag,
Starting point is 00:06:22 and while he grabs a beer with one hand, he sneakily sort of pulls something else out with his other hand and places it into his hoodie pocket. I'm convinced that it was a knife or a gun. Probably a knife in all honesty. He then re-approaches us and cracks open his beer. I glance around casually and then I notice something else. Somebody else is out here.
Starting point is 00:06:49 There's someone moving along the tree line to our left, a relatively good distance away, but somebody else is here, and they're circling around as if to come up behind us. Screw this. I need to leave now. So I go, well, I got to work in the morning, and Craig's driving me home, so we gotta get out of here.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Jeremy and his infinite wisdom responds with, What? You said you didn't have to work tomorrow. I face palms so hard on the inside. No, Jeremy, you're not. You must have misheard me. I said I do have to work tomorrow. And Jeremy, proving there is no end to his wisdom, says, All right, guys.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Well, it was nice hanging out with you. Get home safe. He wasn't leaving the woods with us. Craig and I started walking away, and I told him about the other person circling to get behind us, and that we needed to move. We started trying to brainstorm away to get Jeremy and his girlfriend out of there.
Starting point is 00:07:53 and decided to call him and tell him that his mom was out in the parking lot looking for him. Jeremy is terrified of his mom. Craig explains to me, and this should work. Because we clearly couldn't just call him and tell him the situation was not safe, without him blurting out. Oh, this guy isn't sketchy. I totally feel safe. Jeremy was maddered us for lying about his mom. I think his girlfriend appreciated it, though.
Starting point is 00:08:22 I'm not sure what was going on there that night. I've talked to several people about it over the years, and there are a few different ideas. Did they know we were coming back? Were they waiting for us? Or did we stumble into something that we weren't meant to? Almost everyone I tell about this has, you guys just accidentally interrupted a drug deal.
Starting point is 00:08:46 But something about that just doesn't seem right. Who does a drug deal in the middle of the... woods at night. I don't know. Very possibly it was just a homeless dude with no ill intentions, and another homeless dude with no ill intentions as well. But it was a very creepy and scary situation, and I just thought I would share it. Hey, Raven, I wanted to share the story with you and your audience, as it's one of those stories that is creepy, but can also be used as educational, as you always say. It's, one of the only times I've ever felt scared for my life, honestly.
Starting point is 00:09:36 And it's been a few years now, and thankfully nothing else has happened, minus this one event. To start, it was a pretty good night. I'd gone out with a couple of friends. I hadn't been drinking or anything. We had just been out having dinner as a small group and went out to see a movie. It was a bit of a silly night, but it was a good time. I wanted to stay the night with them all as they were staying at one of their houses,
Starting point is 00:10:05 but I had to work in the morning, so I unfortunately had to drive home after we were all done with the night's events. I was in pretty high spirits on the drive home, though. I had my windows down, my music was up, and I was breathing in the night air. It wasn't a terribly far drive, like half an hour or so, so I was just coasting on autopilot through most of it. I assumed it would be uneventful, until I was heading down one road about ten minutes from my house.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I was driving as I had been, and down one of the side roads, there was a car that was going the opposite direction. Nothing scary about that. People drive on roads. They passed me, and after they did, I happened to glance up into my rear-view mirror for whatever reason, and I watched them slam their brakes and start into a K-turn. Then they got behind me.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Now, I thought that maybe they had intentions on doing this anyways, and it was just bad timing or something, but they sped up pretty quickly to get behind me, which was a tad alarming. After a couple seconds of them driving behind me, they kicked on their flashing lights and my stomach dropped. I looked down at my speedometer. I wasn't speeding. I hadn't done anything stupid or illegal as far back as I could remember.
Starting point is 00:11:33 My headlights were all in working order. I had no idea why they would be pulling me over. I thought about the situation for a moment, and even started preparing myself to pull over at the first available shoulder. The road that I was on didn't have a shoulder, so I couldn't have pulled over there. After thinking about why I would be being pulled over, something clicked in my head, specifically about the car. I didn't see any markings on the car that indicated it was a cop car. The tag that I saw as it passed was not a government tag, which is required on unmarked vehicles.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Plus, the unmarked cars where I live are usually SUVs, which this was not. As I started piecing the thoughts together and thinking about the whole thing, I realized something else. The light that was flashing was just a single blue light, and it looked like it was on his dashboard. My state uses full light bars, blue, white, and red, and they're typically on top of the cars. I think that this was even implemented as a requirement at some point, but I can't say for sure. As all of these pieces started falling into place, it occurred to me what this was, most likely. It was not an actual officer. With how the light was set up, the lack of markings, this was an impersonator,
Starting point is 00:13:04 and they were trying to pull me over for God knows what nefarious reason. At this point, I decided I would take a chance. I figured that I would drive to the police station, and, if, this was a real officer, they would just tack on a possible evading charge that I would, of course, fight. And it was going to suck if they were real, but I was pretty certain that they weren't. I kept on down the road, they kept on tailgating me, and we made a few turns through the town. The person kept right at my bumper, and they kept the light on the whole time. The further we drove, the more I was absolutely convinced this was a thing.
Starting point is 00:13:47 fake. Not once did he go over the speaker saying to pull over. Not once did he hit a siren. He did hit his horn a few times, but that was even more suspicious. I kept him going for a while until I was close to the police station. I turned down the road that the police station was on, and then hit my signal to indicate that I was pulling into the parking lot of said station. As soon as I hit my signal, he got over into the oncoming line. lane, and took off down the road past me, going way too fast down the road, and obviously trying to make a break for it. There was an officer that was outside the station, just getting out of his cruiser that saw the whole thing happen. When I pulled in, he ran over to me and asked me a
Starting point is 00:14:35 couple of questions about the car. I told him a really quick summary of what had happened. He told me to go in and let the front desk know the situation so they could get a report, and he jumped back in his cruiser taking off with lights and sirens going. I did what he asked. I went in, told the officer at the desk that I was followed by someone pretending to be a cop. He took my statement very seriously, thankfully, and I heard him get on the radio to the officer that had taken off after him. I then made a formal statement, detailing all that I could remember about the car,
Starting point is 00:15:12 the location where he started following me, what I was doing, etc. After a while, the original officer came back to the station and I spoke with him about it too. He, unfortunately, was not able to find him. But he told me that he got a good look at the car and confirmed my statement as being what he saw too. He also told me that I did the right thing, that me going to the station instead of stopping may have literally saved my life. He also informed me that, in cases like this,
Starting point is 00:15:45 where I think it may be an impersonator, that I should dial 911 and confirm that the officer is legitimate, and that the dispatcher will have all the information to confirm it. So, this was an educational situation for me, one that was terrifying because I almost did stop. If he'd been a bit more convincing with his props, specifically the light, I likely would have, because I wouldn't have thought twice.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Hopefully the story can help someone out there to avoid any situation like the one I was in. I know that most officers out there may take offense to you not stopping right away, but if you aren't feeling safe, you should at least call 911 to confirm that you are being pulled over by someone legitimate. Of course, if you're being followed by a fully marked cruiser, with full light bars and sirens, odds are it's legitimate, and you probably shouldn't push your luck. Either way, that's my story, and it's one that has stuck with me for these past couple of years,
Starting point is 00:16:54 because it really was scary how close I was to something that was potentially incredibly dangerous. When I was young and still lived with my parents, the house that we lived in was in the center part of a cul-de-sac, and our cul-de-sac was actually connected to a road that was more commercial than residential. So, basically, our backyard ended with a large fence that was owned by the commercial property company. And then just past that was a Baskin-Robbins. Not relevant, but you can imagine how much weight I would gain in the summer having an ice cream shop in my backyard. but that also meant that there were a lot of people that would end up not too far from our house.
Starting point is 00:17:53 At the time of this story, I was 15, and I was addicted to playing a certain game online. I don't remember what it was called, but it was basically a Pokemon rip-off that operated as an MMO, so you would play online against other people. The family computer was in the dining area, at a desk that was played. placed by the sliding glass door. So when you were at the computer, you could turn to the right and look right out into the backyard. Because of this, I kind of hated being on the computer at night,
Starting point is 00:18:29 because the backyard was dark and pretty creepy. So, when this happened, it was the middle of summer break, and my parents were super open about me spending my time off school however I wanted to. It may not have been healthy, but that meant that I spent several nights playing this dumb game until three in the morning. On this night, I was playing and trying to get my name onto the leaderboard, which I will say that I'm pretty sure I was close to being a top player. I was just playing, and at one point I started feeling like something was off.
Starting point is 00:19:08 I got that slight chill that you sometimes get when you're being watched. I turned to look out into the hallway to see if maybe my parents were watching me or if my brother was standing in the hallway or something, but there was no one there. I shrugged it off, and I went back to the computer, and after a moment or two I glanced out into the backyard, and that's where things went from a bit spooky to downright terrifying. As soon as I looked out into the backyard,
Starting point is 00:19:42 I saw a man standing just on the outside of the fence, on the stone wall that was at the back, and literally just staring at me. It would have been creepy if it was just someone standing there, but it got worse. The man was wearing a really freaky clown mask. For several seconds, I just stared at the man standing there thinking, am I really seeing what I'm seeing? Is there really a person in a cloud mask in my backyard?
Starting point is 00:20:17 And then it kind of clicked to me that he could probably see me in the glow of the monitor. I quickly pushed the button to turn off the screen and stood up to get away from the sliding door. I went over to the kitchen window, and sure enough, the man was still standing there, just staring in my direction. Then the man lifted his hand from his side, showing me that he had a handgun, and just kind of waved at me like, I know you're there, and just so you know I could easily kill you right now. Yep, that was enough for me to shut the lights off and go upstairs. Should I have called the cops? Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Was I stupid for just walking away from the situation where an armed man with a clown mask was waving at me without telling any? without telling anyone. Yes, absolutely. But again, I was 15, and I just thought, if I ignore it, it'll go away. Thankfully, it did go away, sort of. Or at the very least, he didn't do anything to us. I, however, did learn the next day
Starting point is 00:21:26 why he was standing there in a mask and why he had a gun. Apparently, one of the stores that was behind our house was robbed. The group of guys had smashed out the glass door and stolen a bunch of electronics and games from the video game store that was next to the Baskin Robbins. The local news showed the story about the robbery,
Starting point is 00:21:49 and they played the security footage. And the guys that they got on camera in the store were also all wearing clown masks, just like the guy that was in the backyard. My guess is that the guy that I saw was doing lookout to make sure no one was headed in their direction from the street, and I wasn't enough of a threat for him to be concerned. Obviously, this was a terrifying night for me,
Starting point is 00:22:17 and I never told anyone that I saw one of the guys in the backyard, and I have no idea whatever happened to them. I would assume that they were caught, as it was a pretty messy smash-and-grab, though they were all masked, so who knows. I do want to say to the lookout guy that I saw, thanks for not shooting me, but also let's never meet again.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Back before the pandemic, I was let go from my normal nine to five, and this left me in a bit of a desperate state for money. My wife was still working, thankfully, but I knew that I needed to figure something out, and unemployment wasn't a guarantee. So I got a little desperate. That desperation led me to doing what a lot of other Americans did at that time.
Starting point is 00:23:19 And I turned to the gig economy to try and pat our savings so that bills would get paid. It was a bit tough, but I did what I did, and we made it work. For the most part, I was driving for a ride-share company. I tried to do the food delivery thing, but that didn't pay well enough, honestly. And I found that people were better tippers, if you were delivering them to their destinations, instead of delivering their overpriced sandwich. One night I was on the clock, and I had come off of a fare,
Starting point is 00:23:54 when I got a ping saying that there was another passenger nearby. And they needed a lift. It was on the outskirts of town, but I was kind of close, so I figured, whatever, I would get him, take him wherever, and then just go home. The passenger seemed normal enough. He was a young guy in what looked like his mid-20s, well enough to rest, and he seemed pretty friendly. He opened the door, we confirmed that he was my passenger,
Starting point is 00:24:25 and he tossed his backpack into the back, and then sat in the rear passenger-site seat. There were literally no red flags that I could see. He looked like a normal dude that you'd see working in IT for some medium-sized company. He buckled in and said, Hey, thanks for picking me up. Sorry, it's so late, though. I laughed and told him that it wasn't that big of a deal,
Starting point is 00:24:49 that I would get him to his destination, and then probably head home for the night. As I drove, we struck up a bit of conversation. He told me that he was working as a contractor for a warehouse, doing system maintenance and whatnot, which wasn't surprising, as I mentioned. He said that he was saving up to go back. to school so that he could get out of the contract work and get a full-time job doing tech work
Starting point is 00:25:16 because he was tired of the instability. I mentioned that I knew all about instability, as I'd been let go and we kind of bonded over blue-collar work and the annoyances that came with it. He seemed genuine, just another hard-working guy trying to make it. I think that's why I found myself relaxed during the whole ride. and any concern I had about him was immediately dispelled. Then we pulled down the road for his destination, and it was a part of town that I knew for my teenage years,
Starting point is 00:25:52 not the best place to be in the middle of the night. I made a remark that was a bit inappropriate, asking him if he was sure that he wanted me to drop him off down this way. He laughed and said, yeah, unfortunately. I shrugged and just kept on down the street until the map notified, me that we were where we wanted to be dropped off, which looked like an absolute mess. The house was old, dilapidated, and while I'm not one that should judge people, did not look like a place where this man should be living, staying, or associating with.
Starting point is 00:26:28 I pulled up to the curb under the only street light on that part of the strip, and that's where things took a bit of a turn. The guy hesitated, and took a deep breath and then opened the door and said, Hey, could you just wait for a second? His voice was no longer friendly. It sounded almost scared as he asked, but before I could even respond, the front door of the house swung open. Three men emerged, one of them very noticeably brandishing a gun.
Starting point is 00:27:00 My heart skipped when I saw it, and it immediately clicked in my mind that this whole thing was a setup. I looked back at the man who was now half. standing with my door open, looking back at me with that stare of, I'm really sorry, dude, in his eyes. Panic surged through me. These guys were either going to rob me, steal my car, or worse. Without thinking, I slammed my foot on the gas pedal.
Starting point is 00:27:31 The car lurched forward and my tires squealed. I heard someone shout and then the loud bang, followed by more shouting and a few more shots ringing out. My mind was racing. I was pumped full of adrenaline, but I did not slow down. I did at one point look in my rearview mirror, which is when I noticed that the guy that was in the back seat was now lying on the ground a way's back,
Starting point is 00:27:58 and the other three guys were standing over him. I kept going for a while, and then pulled into a Walmart parking lot before I felt safe. enough to call the police. I explained what had happened to them, and told them where I was. The cops arrived pretty much right away, and that's when I had to explain the whole thing to them again. That was also when I noticed that my car had a few new holes by the back door, and in the side
Starting point is 00:28:27 of the trunk. I told them that the guy was a fare, that I'd went to drop him off, and that the people just started shooting. I explained that the last thing I saw was him on the ground with the other guys, and I didn't know if he was alive, dead, or other. Worse yet, his backpack was still in the back seat. And when the cops opened it, they found a handgun. So much to my disdain, this guy was also armed.
Starting point is 00:28:57 And he was sitting in the prime position to put the gun to my head. After a while, the truth did come out. it was a setup. The friendly guy was part of the scheme, and their whole plan was to steal my car, and leave me there on the side of the road with nothing, in a rough part of town. Their plan obviously backfired completely,
Starting point is 00:29:20 because the guy had apparently hesitated, which gave me time to take off. Also come to find out, when I took off, he was still hanging on to my car, and then they shot at me and his friend, with the gun, actually shot him. He survived. It wasn't that bad of a shot,
Starting point is 00:29:40 thankful for him, but I'm pretty sure that they weren't very good friends after that. Of course, after all of this, I couldn't help but shake that feeling of betrayal. The guy seemed normal, decent, and we developed that quick momentary friendship that you create with people. I ended up going back to the food delivery gig.
Starting point is 00:30:04 It paid less, but there were fewer chances for things like this to happen. I'm not going to lie. I do often think about that guy, and I wonder if he has any regrets about the choices he made that night. But mostly, I'm just grateful that I got out of there alive. A bit more cautious, a little less trusting, but alive. I never really believed in the whole being watched since, until it happened to me, until I had to live through an event that made me feel the terror of it all.
Starting point is 00:30:51 I'm a college student. I work nights at a convenience store near my campus. It's nothing glorious. It's a very thankless job in an old and beaten-down little store that sells as much alcohol and candy as we do gas. Of course, the store has to add to the creepy ambience, right? The lights flicker, door out back, makes this grating creak noise that makes the hair on my arm stand every single time it opens. Other than that, the store is definitely silent, minus the soda fountain sometimes making strange noises. It's a job that pays, and that's about the end of it.
Starting point is 00:31:34 You'd think that the scariest thing that you'd have to deal with at these kinds of jobs would be the occasional drunk or irate customer. and doubly so if the customer is both drunk and you won't sell him alcohol so he becomes irate. It's the den of the night, so really you wouldn't think that anything creepy would actually occur. Plus, we're near the school and close to a cop shop. People know not to do anything stupid since we can get a cruiser there in about three and a half minutes. I would know as I timed it. I once had to call on a drunk guy trying to drive out of my lot. By the time I'm at the middle of my shift, the world is asleep, so really I just get to sit there and wait for the morning to come so that I can go home.
Starting point is 00:32:23 There was one night where, as I said earlier, things shifted from normal to creepy. I was sitting there waiting for my shift to end when an older guy walked into the store. I looked up to greet him, customer service and whatnot, and when I looked out the window past him, I saw this random guy standing outside. He was across the street just behind the streetlight. And with how the light was glowing down, I couldn't see his face under his hoodie. There was something about how he was just standing there that was making me feel genuinely unsettled. He wasn't just there for the hell of it.
Starting point is 00:33:03 He wasn't waiting for the bus. It was like he was deliberately standing there and watching the store. Watching me. He didn't have a dog. He didn't have a phone out or anything. It was just him in the night. Now, I'm a pretty big dude. I'm six foot two, a little over 230 and not easily spooked.
Starting point is 00:33:28 But the way this guy was just staring in my direction without moving was seriously freaky. After I rang up the old guy, I sat back down on my stool and just watched him as he watched me. Part of me was thinking that he was going to do something, like run at the store, pull out a gun, just something that would justify my terror of him, but he didn't. After about an hour and a half of him just standing there and staring, he took a step forward and then turned left and walked away, down the sidewalk. No lie, it was a relief to watch him walk away. But, of course, that...
Starting point is 00:34:11 wasn't the end. The next night that I worked, around two in the morning, I looked up, and sure enough, he was standing there again. At first I was mentally certain that it was just another guy standing there, that there was no way in hell this dude was going to spend a couple more hours in the middle of the night, just watching the store for fun. But after I stared at him for a couple of minutes, I could tell that he was wearing the same shorts and same hoodie, and I knew it was him for certain. I tried to shake it off, tried to laugh at myself, and thought, wow, Jason, you're getting paranoid. But this eerie feeling was settling in my gut, and it would not go away. Something was off, way off. So I did what I think anyone would do if they were in my position,
Starting point is 00:35:06 and working at 3 in the morning behind the counter of a giant robbery target. I called the police. I explained that there was a man that had been loitering around the store, and that I would appreciate an officer to just maybe check him out, or maybe just come to the store and make sure nothing happened. It was a bit of an exaggeration. He wasn't technically loitering around the store, but it wasn't wholly untrue. and they said that they would send a unit to the store to check in.
Starting point is 00:35:39 I thanked her and hung up. That's when things went from freaky to, holy crap, what is happening. As soon as I hung up from the dispatcher, I looked up and watched as this man reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone and placed it to his ear. Then, right on cue, the phone to the store started ringing. I was still in this weird mentality of denial.
Starting point is 00:36:04 I was thinking that there was absolutely no way that it was this guy. The timing was just a big coincidence. I picked it up and answered saying the name of the store. The voice on the other end immediately cut in and said, I hope you have a good night, Jason. The voice was low and quiet, and the call ended as they finished their statement, which to me made it feel like a threat.
Starting point is 00:36:32 When the call ended, the man on the other side of the street put his phone away, and immediately started walking away from his post under the streetlight. I stood there watching him walk, holding the phone receiver in my hand, not sure what this was at this point. I didn't answer the phone saying my name, so him referring to me by name was unsettling. It was entirely possible that he'd been in the store at some point, and interacted with me,
Starting point is 00:37:04 and I just never noticed it was him, but it was still freaky. After about ten minutes, the officers finally pulled up, which was a disappointing response time, but I guess it was just a loitering call. I explained the whole thing to them, and then told them immediately after calling them
Starting point is 00:37:25 that the man called me, and told them what he'd said. They seemed to want to take it seriously, but I think at the same time this guy hadn't done anything actually illegal, so they had to just say that they would drive around and see if they could find him. And that was it. I finished out my shift, thankful to not see the man out there for the rest of the night.
Starting point is 00:37:50 This wasn't the last event, but it was the last one that happened at my work. What happened after this is the most recent thing to happen, but is also the most terrifying, I'll be it the least eventful. About two days after the night where I called the cops, I was at home getting ready for work and whatnot, and when I went out to leave,
Starting point is 00:38:13 I noticed that there was a slip of paper under my windshield wiper. At first, I thought it was a ticket, or a warning for parking there or something, which was confusing, but it was the most logical explanation. But when I pulled the page out and looked at it, I was horrified. On the page right there in black and white
Starting point is 00:38:35 was a written note that said, I'll be around, Jason. I'm not scared of the police. When I read this, the world felt like it was spinning. What the hell had I done to this person? Why were they latching on to me like this? I really didn't know what to do.
Starting point is 00:38:55 Should I call the cops? Was this just an empty threat? Was this some kind of start? that was waiting to escalate the situation. I did contact the police, and when they showed up, I explained the situation that had taken place at work, which thankfully did add a bit of credence to my story. And then I showed them the note that I had just found.
Starting point is 00:39:18 They thought it was freaky, and they agreed that this could be a weird stalker situation, but there wasn't much to go on beyond the person just being creepy. After a bit more talking about things, They basically gave me an open case number and told me that, if I saw this person at all, or if they contacted me, to contact them immediately,
Starting point is 00:39:41 and this would be an open investigation into potential stalking. Fortunately, this is where the story ends, for now. It's been two months, and I haven't heard from this person nor seen them since then. I don't know if that's a good thing, or if they're waiting for me to let my guard down, but it's definitely scaring the hell out of me. These past two months, I've been feeling like I'm being watched, being followed,
Starting point is 00:40:09 and I swear that I am jumping at literally every shadow. I've kind of started secluding myself, only spending time at work and home, not going out into public just in case. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them, so please do let me know what I should do. I am armed, so if this person tries anything at home, I can do something about it. But I can't open carry, so out in public the only thing I can hope to protect me is the fact that this is out in the open.
Starting point is 00:40:46 In the end, I think I'm safe, since it has been so long. But of course, I am scared of the possibility of them coming back. It's a terrifying feeling, and I may just be being. paranoid, but if that paranoia saves me, then so be it, I guess. I will start by saying that nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to discover the morning after a night out. It started as every other night would. Me and my family got ready to head to our local bar for a fundraising event.
Starting point is 00:41:34 I had just turned 18, and I was looking to have a chill night with frathing. and family. I knew most of the people there, so I was feeling really relaxed. While at the bar, I went to pay for my drink when the bartender had told me that it had already been paid for.
Starting point is 00:41:55 When I went to see who had paid for it, I saw my cousin's partner. He's around 12 years older than me, give or take. I gave him a quick wave, and we did the normal niceties, like, Hi, how are you doing?
Starting point is 00:42:10 It's important to note that I had barely spoken more than two words to him before, as he was usually quiet or retreated to his room when we would go and visit my cousin. After saying thank you, I thought nothing of it. Nothing seemed off with our little interaction. By the end of the night, I had gathered my family together and told them that I wanted to head home. At this point in time, I was still living at home with my mother. She had made plans to stay at my grandmothers that night, so I was going to go home and sleep. It was around 11.30, and I was outside having a smoke, about to head to my car.
Starting point is 00:42:55 Just as I was about to head to my car, I heard someone call my names, so I turned to find my cousin's partner walking towards me. He asked if I was heading home for the night, which I thought was weird. So I said it's late, so I was calling it a night. Without skipping a beat, he mentioned the car that I drive, and said that he would see me around sometime. At this point, I got a bit creeped out, so I said good night and walked off to my car. There were plenty of people outside, so I wasn't concerned at all. Once I got in my car, my phone went off, and it was my mother.
Starting point is 00:43:39 She was begging and pleading with me to go and stay at my grandmother's house for the night, saying that she had a really bad feeling. Initially, I was really annoyed. I just wanted to go home and go to sleep in my own bed, but she insisted. I couldn't understand why. I was used to being home alone at night, but she wouldn't let it go. I hung up and started driving home. I couldn't be bothered going to my grandmaws when my house was just down the road.
Starting point is 00:44:11 I was tired. I just wanted to go home. Not even halfway. My phone went off, so I pulled over to check it. It was my sister asking me to please go stay at my grandma's house. I was pissed off at this point and decided that it would be easier going to my grandma's house instead of arguing with my family. When I got to my grandma's house, everyone was already asleep.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Now, I was really pissed off and went straight to sleep. The night was uneventful, but I woke in the morning to my family talking about how they all had a feeling of dread, which is why they didn't want me to go home alone that night. My mother and I left for home at lunch. I felt off as soon as I pulled in to the driveway. Once I got to the door, I found a police card wedged into the door to call them ASAP. I went inside and found my mother's camera on the kitchen table. This was a huge red flag, as it was in my bedroom before we left for the fundraiser.
Starting point is 00:45:22 I went to my room to find my entire room had been ransacked. No other room in our house had been touched. My blankets had been pulled back, and it looked like someone had been in my bed. My underwear drawer was wide open, and some were also sprawled out onto the floor. Another camera of my mother's was also on the table where my TV was, which was directly opposite my bed. Clothes were everywhere. By this point, I was losing my mind. If I had gone home, like the plan was all along,
Starting point is 00:45:59 I would have made my way through the house and then crawled into bed without switching my lamp on. I had done this so many times previously, and I wouldn't have seen the state of my room at all. My mother gave them a call to find out what had happened, and what she told me made my blood drained from my face. Police were alerted to a break-in at our next-door neighbor's house, when our neighbor found a man wandering inside their house. The man claimed he was my friend that he had gone into the wrong house, and they chased him out. Our house had a big 8 by 12 meter deck, which looked over my neighbor's house.
Starting point is 00:46:45 They called police again when they spotted the same man having a smoke on our deck. The police arrived at our house at 2 a.m., but since I wasn't home, no one answered the door. They noticed the lights on, so they went inside to investigate. They made their way through the house and found a man hiding in my bedroom in the dark. He couldn't give a reason why he was there or why he was hiding in my room. They had arrested him and taken him to the station, and they wanted to know if we knew him. Turns out, it was my cousin's partner and he'd been hiding in my bedroom for over an hour, waiting for me to get home because he knew I would be going home that night.
Starting point is 00:47:31 My mother's gut feeling saved me from going home alone that night, and my neighbor's vigilance helped to catch a creep. I always listen now without question whenever she has a bad feeling. Who knows what would have happened? All I know is it wouldn't have been pretty. He was charged with breaking and entering, and he spent some time in jail before being released and moving country. Always trust your mother's gut feeling, people.
Starting point is 00:48:01 It sure saved me from having to deal with that. As I was walking home from work last night, about halfway to my house, a disheveled man who looked to be either homeless or extremely down on his luck, crossed paths with me from the other side of the sidewalk. He had initially been walking in the opposite, direction, but as soon as he saw me, he immediately turned around and started following me. He began rambling incoherently and aggressively, and his words were so slurred that I hardly understood a thing that he said. All I could make out was something about a care package,
Starting point is 00:48:50 and look at you. It was obvious this man was under the influence of multiple substances. I quicken my pace to try and avoid any eye contact with the third. man, and he was getting agitated that I wasn't paying attention to him. When my walking speed got too quick for his inebriated stumbling to keep up with, he stopped talking and instead began just trying to follow me. I kept looking over my shoulder at him, and every time I saw him, he would either stop or try to duck behind a bush. Finally, I started outright sprinting and looking for a spot that I could hide myself. I came up. I came up, to my local mosque, and I tried to sneak around the corner into the parking lot of it where there was a tree that I hid behind.
Starting point is 00:49:39 While hiding there, I frantically dialed 911. I told them that a strange man displaying unstable behavior was trying to follow me, and I described my location, myself, and the man to them. The dispatcher assured me that officers were on their way to where I was, but while waiting for them, I saw a figure heading up. up the sidewalk in front of the parking lot that I was hiding in. Panic immediately filled me, until the passerby was close enough to where I could see
Starting point is 00:50:11 that it was not the same man who had just bothered me, and they turned out to be harmless. Mere moments after this, the cops arrived to where I was, pulling up next to the tree and motioned for me to come out and talk to them. The officer driving the vehicle asked me the standard questions. A description of the incident, where I was when it happened, etc.
Starting point is 00:50:35 While we were talking, he spotted a man in another parking lot down the street, not far from where I had my first encounter with the creep. He asked me if this was the man that I had encountered, and it was hard to tell between the darkness and the distance, but I was pretty sure that it was. Another police vehicle had pulled into that parking lot, and it appeared that an officer got out to talk to the man. The officer I had been talking to asked me how far I was from my house,
Starting point is 00:51:07 and I told them that I was pretty close to my street at this point. He assured me that I should be safe to walk the rest of the way home, and that they had other cop cars patrolling the area. I thanked him and finished walking home without further incidents. Thank God. Shortly after I got home, I saw that I had a text from my boyfriend that read, Are you okay? The text had been sent at around the time the incident was occurring,
Starting point is 00:51:35 as if he could sense that I was in a fearful situation. I replied back, telling him what had happened. He told me that he had gotten yelled at by a homeless man earlier too. I described the creep that I encountered to him and asked him if he thought it was the same guy. He said that he didn't think so. We also had a brief phone call to make sure that each other were okay. I let him know that I was home safe,
Starting point is 00:52:01 and he told me that he was in a vehicle with a group, so he was safe too. I don't know what the cops ended up doing about the man, but I hope that he stays as far away from me as possible. I wouldn't normally share this story on the internet, but I'm going to go ahead and send it to you with a request to remain anonymous just in case. Honestly, after what happened, I kind of feel like it's necessary, because it was one of those situations that others should know about. I live in a fairly large apartment complex, in a part of town that is questionable.
Starting point is 00:52:50 The community slash complex is fine overall, but the location is sketchy. We've had a string of car and apartment break-ins over the past year or two. Because of this increase in crime, the community has installed a gate at the front that is closed after 10 p.m. And they hired a couple of guards that are stationed in the lot overnight. For the most part, it's actually been kind of nice to have the security guards on the property, as it does make me feel a lot safer. At least, until they hired a guy named Jeb.
Starting point is 00:53:28 I'm not one to judge people based on things like names, but when we got the email from the office saying that they had hired a man named Jeb, I didn't have high hopes, that's all. My initial impression didn't get any better when I finally met him. He was a big guy, not fat, just really bulky. When I first met him, I tried my best to be polite and to say hi to him. I work in customer service, so I have that customer service smile. And when I said hi to him, he sort of just grunted.
Starting point is 00:54:05 After that, I made it a point to just not talk to him, as that was, one, rude, and two, kind of creepy. Who grunts when someone says hi? Anyways, I avoided him and didn't acknowledge him at all, so he pretty much just left my mind altogether. My friend Jessica was the one that initially noticed that something was off about him. Jessica doesn't live in the complex, but she'd been staying with me for a couple of weeks because she was having issues in her personal life. I've known her since we were in preschool, so I had no issue offering my couch to her when she asked. She was in the laundry room of the building, doing her laundry as one does, and at one point, Jeb walked in to the laundry room. The laundry room in our building has the washer and dryers.
Starting point is 00:55:03 but also has all of the tenant's storage units. It's a small and sort of cramped room, but it has enough space for one to sit if they need to. And that's about it. She was sitting there, waiting for the ten or so minutes to pass by, and just scrolling on her phone when Jeb walked in. He looks at her, and then walks past her to the other side of the hallway-like area,
Starting point is 00:55:29 and leans against the wall. He then pulls out his phone, just starts scrolling, but is very clearly not actually reading anything. After the buzzer goes off on the washer, Jessica gets up to change them over to the dryer, and Jeb pushes off the wall and slowly walks towards her. She notices him, but doesn't want to make an issue. She's not on the lease here and technically shouldn't be using the facilities until he gets too close. From what she told me, he was uncomfortably close to her,
Starting point is 00:56:06 and just looking over her shoulder as she was moving her clothes. At one point, she pulls out a pair of underwear and moves it, and she hears him say, "'Nice, under his breath.' She shivered, but just finished moving it all, put the change in for the dryer and turned around, only to be met with him standing less than arm's length away from, from her. As soon as she turned around, he smirked and said,
Starting point is 00:56:34 Hey, can I get your phone number? She was shocked at how brazen he was, and she told him that she wasn't interested. She said that he chuckled at this response and then said, You live in Unit 203, right? Which is my unit where she was staying. She asked him why he was bothering her, and he just said, I'm just doing my normal rounds, you know, making sure you're not up to something suspicious. At this point, she said that she'd had enough, so she told him that he was being creepy with his comments,
Starting point is 00:57:11 and that it was not appropriate to ask her for her phone number, and then ask which unit she lived in. She told him that if he kept bothering her and being inappropriate, she was going to report him to the office. He just laughed and shook his head. and told her to have a good night and then left. She made sure that he walked out of the building and then immediately ran over to my unit to tell me about what had happened. I told her that I wanted her to report him anyways, that they need to know that he was a creep.
Starting point is 00:57:47 She agreed, but was hesitant at first, saying that he didn't really do anything. I mentioned that he may not have done anything this time or to her, but there was a real. real possibility that could change next time, with the next person. That seemed to make her change her mind, and she said that she would go ahead and report him. The next morning I went down to the office with her and informed them of the situation. They were a bit confused since Jessica doesn't live here, but I told them that she was staying
Starting point is 00:58:21 with me for a couple of days, and that she was helping me with my laundry, and that's why she was there. They seemed to be okay with that, and asked for more details. She told them everything, and the person that took our complaint seemed to take it seriously. They said that they would talk with him, and that they would take action, and apologized that had happened. We thought that that would be the end of it, that he would either get fired or that he would get the hint.
Starting point is 00:58:52 But he didn't, and he didn't. About two days later, we were in my living room and heard knock on the door. I get up to answer it, looking through the peephole and see Jeb just standing there. I stop and think about whether or not I should answer the door, but he knocks again and says, This is security. I need you to open the door. I sighed and did what he mentioned, keeping it chained just in case. As I opened the door, he actually ran into it. like physically bumped into the door.
Starting point is 00:59:30 I'm guessing because he didn't expect me to have it chained and he was planning on just walking into the apartment. Once he regained his composure, I asked him if I could help him, and he immediately told me that I needed to open the door all the way. I told him that I didn't feel comfortable doing so, and he immediately got angry. He said,
Starting point is 00:59:53 You need to open the door. I am with security. and I need to check your apartment. I stared at him blankly for a moment and asked him why he would need to check my apartment. He responded with, I have reports there are people living in this unit that aren't supposed to be here and aren't on the lease, and I want to check just to make sure. I once again just told him no,
Starting point is 01:00:18 that he couldn't just enter my apartment at any time that he wanted, and that if they were going to send someone, they needed to call me with 24 hours notice, according to my lease. He immediately raised his tone saying, You're going to open this door right now, or you're going to be kicked out. I am here to check the apartment. It's an emergency. I kept up my questioning, asking what the emergency was, whose life or property was at risk, according to him.
Starting point is 01:00:51 He tried to say something like, you may have a murderer in there hiding for all I know, so this is an emergency. I just shook my head and laughed at him, telling him that if he really thought that, then the office either needed to call me to talk to me, or he needed to contact the police and have them check out my apartment. I then moved to shut my door,
Starting point is 01:01:16 and he reached his arm in and around the door trying to grab at the chain lock. I immediately shoved the door as hard as I could and screamed saying that he was trying to break into my apartment screaming for help, trying to get the attention of the neighbors. Thankfully it worked, and I could hear several of the doors opening in the hallway and people asking what was going on. I think he realized the implications
Starting point is 01:01:44 and he immediately pulled his arm back and turned to walk away. As he was wondering, walking away, I heard him yell, Get back in your apartments. There's nothing to see here. Like, he wasn't just some security guard and had some kind of actual authority. Obviously, our neighbors came to my door and asked if we were okay and what was happening. We explained the whole thing to them,
Starting point is 01:02:10 and they agreed that everything he was doing was a problem, and that he definitely had something planned with what he was doing. I actually called the police. police to make a report, and when the cops came out, all of the neighbors corroborated what I was saying. They said that they would do a drive around to see if they could find him, and that they would be back with a police report for me to give to the office. Thankfully, this was the end of all this. We took the report to the office, and they told us that they had gotten calls from several
Starting point is 01:02:44 neighbors in our building about the whole situation, and that they had let him go that morning and that he was basically barred from the property. They also said they would assist in any way they could if the police wanted to pursue the investigation. As it is, I haven't seen him since this all happened, and I think he realized that he was treading shallow water, and that if he continued, he was going to end up in jail. In my opinion, he should have been arrested for what he did anyways,
Starting point is 01:03:18 but I don't believe that he was. In the end, it was a terrifying situation, one that caused me to really not feel safe in my own home. The experience left me rattled, and I'm nervous anytime someone from the property has to come to my door, but thankfully nothing has happened since all of this played out. I have a short, creepy and weird story that happened way back when I worked at a small local gas station. I worked the second shift, and I usually got out of work around midnight or so, so I didn't really get to deal with the really weird people beyond the handful of drunks that we would get on a daily basis. For the most part, it was just the people who were up late and wanted candy,
Starting point is 01:04:20 or the people that worked late nights and needed caffeine. It was a pretty good gig, but I had one night that was actually bizarre. to me. It was a standard shift. I was just working and ringing up people, activating pumps for cash sales and sweeping the store when it was empty, when a guy in a very nice suit walks into the store. I will say that the store was in a fairly middle-class part of town,
Starting point is 01:04:51 and we got people in both directions. But I don't think that I had ever seen anyone in a literal tuxedo, walking into the store. I said hello as he walked in, as I always did, and walked behind the register and waited for him to come up to check out. I glanced over at the clock and it was around 1140 at night. So that made the tuxedo even a bit more strange. But at the same time, I figured, hey,
Starting point is 01:05:24 maybe he just really liked to dress nicely when he went out. He walked up to the counter with a six-pack of cheap beer, a bag of Doritos, and several packs of Reese's peanut butter cups. I started ringing him up and made a quick quip about how he was dressed. It wasn't anything offensive or anything. It was just something like, if we don't normally get people in suits here at the store this late, late-night meeting or something, basically just making quick small talk with the guy as I did. He then looked at me straight-faced and said the following. I want to be dressed nicely for the rapture.
Starting point is 01:06:06 I chuckled a bit, thinking that this was a joke or something, and as soon as I met his eyes, I realized he was not kidding. I asked what he meant, basically just fishing for him to say something that would indicate that he was messing with me or something, but he glanced over at the clock next to me and then said, At 1201, the world is going to come to an end, and those of us that were pure of heart will ascend.
Starting point is 01:06:34 People like you will be stuck here, while the planet burns and the fires of hell. I'm sorry that no one told you about this before now. He then smiled a bit and followed that up with, but hey, at least now you know, and you can spend the next 15 minutes begging God for forgiveness. I just kind of laughed at him and finished ringing him up and told him how much he owed. Then I decided that I wanted to ask him something.
Starting point is 01:07:06 I asked, so what do we do if the world doesn't end and the rapture doesn't happen at 1201? He then grabbed his stuff, looked back at me and said, Well, if the world doesn't end, then God has abandoned us. There's nothing stopping me from coming back. here to blow your head off. So, you'd better hope it happens. And walked out of the store and back to his car. I just kind of stood there like,
Starting point is 01:07:37 what the absolute hell was that? Part of me wants to think that he was messing with me, but just had a really good poker face. But the way that he said it, and how he followed it up with that threat, it was way too direct. Most people have a bit of a cracking point with their jokes, but he just kept going with it. Obviously, the world didn't end, and thankfully he never came back, but...
Starting point is 01:08:07 Holy crap. Why would you say that to someone? For this story, I, 31 female, was 15 when this started. I've alluded to it in comments on this sub, so... I thought I would share the full story, since I can't sleep. and am an oversharing type of person. It started when I went to a movie at the indie theater in my hometown. We had two when I was growing up, both owned by the same people,
Starting point is 01:08:47 but one theater featured major films slash blockbusters, and the other did the film festival, well-known kind of everywhere, and more indie movies. My French teacher gave an extra credit assignment to see Man on Wire, I think it was called, so I went with a friend to see it, though she wasn't in the class. When we went to the front,
Starting point is 01:09:11 there was a very cute older guy that I recognized as a girl in our class's older brother. I think he was 22 to 23 at the time. He complimented me, and he offered to comp our tickets and gave me free popcorn and candy and whatnot, ignoring my much prettier friend.
Starting point is 01:09:31 It felt, nice to be noticed, so I accepted, obviously. And we enjoyed the free movie day. For a little backstory, again, the girl who was his younger sister, in my grade, used to be a friend of mine. And I had met him many times as a kid. But he was older enough that I don't think he recognized me at first.
Starting point is 01:09:56 And at that age, I looked more like I was 19 or 20. The next couple of weeks, I saw him everywhere. Grocery store, check. Outside of my school, check. Walking home from Safeway, Check. Everywhere. But being 15 and him being cute and older, my dumb ass thought it was flattering. So, I went to the theater again and was with a different friend.
Starting point is 01:10:26 Same thing. He gave me free popcorn, free ticket. etc. This friend already knew it had happened before because it was a major subject that I had a hot, older man interested in me. We were so young and thought that it was so great. He came into the theater during the movie to bring me an extra candy and his number on the back of a receipt.
Starting point is 01:10:50 I thought that it was so cute. He continued to show up everywhere over the next few months. At this point, I was halfway through 16. and I was at the same theater with the same friend that I was with the first time. He once complimented me, saying I was beautiful, asking if I had a boyfriend, if I liked to party. I said yes. He invited me to his house for a party that he said he was having. His address was very close to the house my friend I was with lived in, so I said yes.
Starting point is 01:11:26 Knowing if I had a sleepover with her, we could go, and I would get to. to go to my first party. I wasn't allowed out late, nor was I allowed to go to parties, if I'd even ever been invited to a high school party, so it was perfect. We went late so that we wouldn't seem lame, and as we walked up,
Starting point is 01:11:47 we could see through the front-lit window to where he was. It wasn't our past, and it was just him, with several bottles of booze. We looked at each other, and decided to walk back to her house. I still saw him a lot after, almost everywhere until I graduated high school
Starting point is 01:12:08 and moved up north for college. I didn't go to that theater again until about a year ago. Back whenever I was around 19, so quite a while ago, I used to sling fries at a place that I don't want to name specifically, so we're just going to call it McBurger Queen. It was a fast food job, one that had me working around grease and oil for literally six hours a day. It was gross, slippery, and terrible for both my weight and my skin. For a broke college student that was doing their best, it was a paycheck, and nothing else.
Starting point is 01:13:00 I hated every minute of it, but I did it long enough to be promoted once or twice, all the way up to a shift to lead. Not a manager per se, but a lead. It meant that I had to delegate things while the managers sat on their back ends in the office. That said, it did pay for what I needed it to pay for, and as much as I loathed it, I kept it and tried my best to just get through it. Then came who I'll just call Mr. Creep Show. At first, he was just another 50-something overweight guy that was. liked to come in on Fridays, a slightly chubby dude with a taste for a double cheeseburger meal.
Starting point is 01:13:46 At first, I hardly noticed him, but even when you don't work front, certain orders start to ring a bell. Double cheeseburger, no ketchup, add mayonnaise, extra pickle, and large, unsalted fries. Yes, I still remember what he would order, because after a while it was an order that I would come to hate. but initially it was just basic stuff. He'd come in, order, I'd get his food maiden out onto the counter. It went from once a week to a few times a week to literally every single shift that I worked. He went from ordering and sitting down
Starting point is 01:14:26 to ordering and then standing at the counter watching me make his food with this awkward grin on his face. When he sat down, he would sit at the close, closest table, and would just stare as he ate. Innocent, yet creepy as hell. Then he started trying to talk to me. I would walk an order up, and he would be at the counter, try to get my attention. It would always start with him saying something was wrong with his order and ask that I fix it.
Starting point is 01:15:00 But he would then try to squeeze in small talk about anything and everything. the weather, how my schooling was going, I made the mistake of once telling him that I was going to college, how work was going, then the conversation started to swing towards things that he had no business asking, not as a customer at a burger joint that I barely knew. One day, he asked me to come up to the counter, and he didn't have his food,
Starting point is 01:15:29 so I didn't know what he was going to bother me with. I walked up, asked him. if I could help him, and he said, yeah, you can. I'd like to take you out for coffee sometime. Would you like that? The way he asked it was so weird. Ending the sentence with, Would you like that, was such an awkward way to ask someone out?
Starting point is 01:15:52 I told him that I appreciated the gesture, but that I was taken. He laughed and said something like, oh, that's fine. I'm sure you have a bunch of guys after you. you with, uh, assets like that. I stared at him for a moment, and he seriously gave me the elevator eyes and smirked at me. At that point, I told him that he was making me feel really uncomfortable.
Starting point is 01:16:21 He then responded with, How about I take you home and make you feel even more uncomfortable? I stepped back and told him in no uncertain words that what he was saying was not okay, and that I was going back to work, and the conversation was over. After that shift was over, I spilled everything to my night manager, who gave me the go-ahead to boot Mr. Creep's show, if he tried to talk to me about anything inappropriate again. But that was it.
Starting point is 01:16:55 She didn't ask any questions, didn't ask for his name or what he looked like. She just said that it was my responsibility to take care of it, until or unless he physically did something inappropriate. After that, I didn't see Mr. Creep Show for a week, so I thought that it was over, and that he had gotten the hint. Maybe he'd moved on to haunt some other poor girl in another fast-food establishment. But then, when I walked into work one night, there he was. He was standing in the McBurger Queen manager's office,
Starting point is 01:17:33 Except he was in uniform. My stomach dropped as my night manager introduced him to me as David, and said that he was a new crew member, my new co-worker. I just gave a plastic smile and asked if I could talk to her alone, and she sent him off to the front to get used to things up there. I then told her that he was the guy, that he was the creep that I had told her about. She gave me this look that screamed that,
Starting point is 01:18:03 she didn't believe me at all, and dismissively said, no, you must be mistaken, David seems like an all right guy. I shook my head, and I told her that it was either him or me, that he had to go, or that I was going to go. She promised that she would work something out, and that I needed to just try to work with him. For a few days, I had to work with this guy, and I could just feel him staring at me. And of course, he worked every shift that I was working. Then, my manager told me that she had actually worked it out with our sister store to transfer him to their team, as they had more openings than we did.
Starting point is 01:18:49 But, and, of course, there was a but, since he had applied and wanted to work at this location, if he wanted to come back here, he could make a call to corporate, and they would likely transfer him back. Basically, if Mr. Creepshaw wanted to come back and ogle me some more, he was within his rights to do so as a McBurger Queen employee. So, I went ahead and gave her my two weeks notice right then and there, and told her that him being away temporarily was not enough for me. She was disappointed, but she said that she understood. I just kept my head down and counted my shifts until it was my last one. On my second to last day, who would show up working at our store again but Mr. Creep Show.
Starting point is 01:19:40 When he clocked in, he walked back to my station and said something like, So, I heard you leaving. Can I go ahead and get your number now? I want to get to know you better, see what you've got going on. Again, he was giving me those sleazy elevator eyes. I snapped. I told him that I would. rather dip my face in the friar than ever see his face again. He just kept this big grin and watched me as I walked away from him to turn in my cap and name
Starting point is 01:20:13 badge. I dropped them off and I walked straight out that door. I did go back one time just to get my paycheck, and the whole time he was out mopping the lobby and was just staring at me. He gave me this gross little wave and a kissy face when I saw him, and I gave him him him the finger. After that, I never went back to that location. I've barely gone back to that specific chain of restaurants, and I hope more than anything that Mr. Cripshow choked on every chicken nugget he ate after that day. When I was 19, I got really into clubbing. I went almost every other day. My younger friend, who I had known in high school, was turning 18 on that Wednesday, and she asked me to take her,
Starting point is 01:21:14 since I was already well-versed in the club scene at this point and knew how to stay safe and have fun. The bar that we went to just so happened to be my favorite bar's throwback night. They play 1990s to 2000s movies, and it always attracted a ton of people because the drinks were cheap, and the music was good. When I met up with my friend, we drove to the bar about an hour, earlier than we intended to go in so we could sit in my car and drink.
Starting point is 01:21:47 We were both underage and live in the U.S. We had a good time, and I had a few shelters since I had to drive us home and be sober in three hours. While we're sitting in my car, which was parked across the street from the bar, and the bar was next to a police station, I tell her that I have a few rules for a safe clubbing experience. No, no taking drinks from strangers for obvious reasons. Number two, no going to the bathroom alone, as I've noticed creepy men always target girls who are alone. Number three, neither of us were going to go home with anybody.
Starting point is 01:22:30 We go in, and we have a good time. I met up with a guy that I had recently been seeing, we danced and talked to people, and she had a few drinks. It hits 2 a.m., and they play closing time and kick everyone out. She starts talking to a guy that she met at the bar and gets his number, and we start to leave. As we're walking towards the crosswalk, a man starts walking behind us and is trying to talk to my friend. My friend is visibly drunk. I turn around and tell him to leave us alone because she just turned 18, and he looks like he's in his late 20s or early 30s, and also not drunk.
Starting point is 01:23:14 He keeps talking to my friend, and she entertains him because, objectively, he's an attractive guy. He follows us all the way to my car, and then begins to ask us for a ride. I tell him no, and he continued to beg, and he even begins to tell me that he'll pay me. I tell him to just pay an Uber and to leave us alone. He still doesn't leave, and he keeps pestering me. At this point, I really just want to leave because he's creeping me out, and he's even starting to creep out my friend. I unlocked the driver door and put my stuff in while still telling him to leave.
Starting point is 01:23:54 I unlocked the passenger door, which unlocks all the doors, and I tell my friend to get in the car. He then proceeds to completely change his demeanor and says, Huh, thanks. and then got in my back seat. I start screaming at him, telling him to get out of my car, and he steadfastly refuses, and even starts becoming aggressive.
Starting point is 01:24:19 At this point, I want to call the cops, and I ask my friend for her phone, since mine was on the fritz and not letting me make calls. She tells me that her phone isn't working either. So, I start glancing around, seeing if I can spot a police officer anyway, since we are across from the police station. And there's not one in sight.
Starting point is 01:24:42 I start panicking, and then I see the guy that I met up with that night getting into his Uber. I run over to him quickly and tell him that there's a man in my car who won't get out, and that our phones aren't working. He tells his friend in the Uber to wait for him, and he walks back to my car with me. He starts yelling at the man to get out of my car, and the man starts yelling back while threatening to beat him up. But he eventually gets out to try and fight him. The second he gets out of my car, I tell my friend to get in.
Starting point is 01:25:17 We both get in and lock the doors while the man follows him back to his Uber, threatening to punch him in the head. He gets in his Uber, and they drive away, and so do we. And the man was just left standing in the road looking very angry. The next morning I spoke to my mom, who was a prosecutor for 20 years. She tells me that she once tried a case where two girls my age, gave a guy a ride home from the bar, and he sexually assaulted and murdered both of them.
Starting point is 01:25:49 Yeah, I didn't go clubbing for a while after that. Back when I worked at a local pizza place that had a really busy dining room, I would get some real characters coming in to get food. For the most part, the characters were just pervy old guys that would make a comment about my body. And I would make a point to tell them that their behavior was not appropriate. And for the most part, they would be quiet. But sometimes you would get the old guys that would make comments about learning to take a compliment or whatever BS like that. Fun fact, with those situations, ask them if they would say what they said to you.
Starting point is 01:26:43 to their own mother, or if they would be okay if some random guy said it to their daughters. It sometimes works against them, and they kind of get the hint. It's not relevant to my story, but it's still good information to have out there.
Starting point is 01:27:00 The story that I want to mention was about a customer that used to come in frequently named Tommy. Tommy was in his late 40s, overweight, balding, and could have used a shower, but honestly, he was a pretty nice guy.
Starting point is 01:27:16 I never had much of an issue serving him. He was a surprisingly good conversationalist, and he and I talked about a lot of things that most people wouldn't bring up to their waitress. Nothing weird or creepy, just some neat conspiracy things and some technology talk. The other thing I liked about Tommy was that he made it a point to never flirt with me,
Starting point is 01:27:40 or ever say anything considered in a problem. appropriate to or about me. He was very respectful of me as a person, and I would say that I considered him a friend. That all kind of fell apart when the conversation happened that I would personally consider creepy. Some people may hear this and think it's not creepy, but to me, coming from him, it was actually kind of messed up. He came in one day, and everything seemed to be going. as normal. We were slower than we normally would have been, so I had a few moments to pause and talk to him
Starting point is 01:28:19 about random things, and I, at some point, mentioned that I was moving soon. I was actually about to move in with my boyfriend because he had proposed to me, but I guess Tommy mistook what I was saying, as I was just looking for a new place to live. He immediately looked up at me and said, do you want to live in my basement? I kind of paused for a moment and looked at him and then said, live in your basement? Are you subletting your house or something? I wasn't interested in living there.
Starting point is 01:28:55 It was just a weird thing to say. He immediately followed that up with, oh, no, but I could put a bed down there, and then you and I could be together. You wouldn't have to work anymore. You could just stay in my basement. basement, you know, with me. I was honestly kind of taken aback to the point that I just sort of chuckled at this suggestion,
Starting point is 01:29:19 thinking maybe he was making an off-kilter joke or something. But I realized after a moment that he was being serious. I asked him why he would just ask someone to move into his basement like that, especially if he wasn't subletting, and he told me that it would be perfect for me, because we would always be close. I never thought I would have to say it, but I told him that I was engaged
Starting point is 01:29:46 and that I never saw him in that way. I think he was devastated by my comment because he just kind of looked down at the floor and stared and didn't seem to want to talk to me after that. In fact, he actually never came in to the restaurant again after that moment. Though he did send a few love letters to me for the first three months after this event. Now, this in and of itself is a bit creepy, but it actually does get worse.
Starting point is 01:30:18 Around two years after all this happened, two years after the last time I had seen Tommy, and around seven months after I had quit working at the pizza place, I was watching the news and saw a story about someone being arrested, and who else's pictures showed up on the screen? but Tommy. Come to find out, Tommy lived with his mother, and his mother was completely disabled and dependent upon him to do everything for her.
Starting point is 01:30:49 From what I gathered from the story, Tommy's mother died from negligence. Basically, she starved to death because he wasn't taking care of her like he was supposed to. Apparently, when they found her, she had been deceased for a while, and Tommy was still living in the house.
Starting point is 01:31:06 in the basement. The photos they showed of the house were nothing shy of a scene from hoarders. There were small patches of rooms empty, but for the most part, the entire house was disgusting. There was trash everywhere. The walls were yellowed, and it was pretty clear that they had animals. As they were showing pictures of the house, I saw pizza boxes from where I used to work in the bathroom. and that's how bad it was. He was arrested and charged for his mother's death.
Starting point is 01:31:41 I believe negligent homicide is the term that they used. And that's my story of the time that I was invited to live in the basement of a guy that I thought was cool, but apparently lived with and was the negligent caretaker for his mother. Not that there's anything wrong with taking care of your loved ones, but Tommy was pretty obviously not a good caretaker. I feel terrible for his mother, and I hope that she's resting in peace, but I don't really feel bad for Tommy, and I'm thankful that I never met him again. This happened a couple of years ago now. I was in an extremely unhealthy relationship at the time, and after one of my partner's fits of rage, I went out for a late-night drive to clear my mind.
Starting point is 01:32:39 I was 22 at the time, living in a small town in rural Alberta. Now, if you know anything about Alberta, you know that a lot of our residents are the redneck types, with huge jacked-up trucks, sporting massive aftermarket bumpers and headlights that can probably see clear to Mars. Now, I'm not a tiny girl. I grew up training in MMA, and I'm damn near six feet tall. But I drive a tiny silver sedan. So, me and my tiny car made our way out to... the local fishing pond. It's also a bit of a lover's lane,
Starting point is 01:33:18 but it was pretty much deserted at this time, aside from one other car in the parking lot. I pull in, hugging tight to the curb to put as much space as I can between myself and the other occupant of the lot. There's a chain,
Starting point is 01:33:35 guardrail thing to the immediate right of my car, as well as in front of me. But I wanted to keep my splotchy face to myself while I texted my best friend about the fight that I just had with my partner. As I'm sitting in my car, doors locked, and the ignition off, I see a vehicle coming down the road. It's important to note that this parking lot is at the top of a T intersection,
Starting point is 01:34:01 and there's not much to do in my hometown other than drive around aimlessly, so I don't think much of it. That is, until the vehicle pulled in behind and slightly to the left of me, blocking my vehicle in. I was still upset and borderline ready to end myself anyway, so although it freaked me out, I didn't do anything about it. I just stayed in my seat, doors locked, texting my friend. After about 20 minutes of this,
Starting point is 01:34:32 what I could now tell was a massive truck with an iron cross bumper. You can look it up, and they're distinctive, sitting behind me with its damn lights from hell shining in my car, They drove off. I paid no more attention to them, though. Once I felt calm enough to go back home, I started my car and went to put it in reverse. Remember how I said the lot that I was in was at the top of a T intersection?
Starting point is 01:35:00 Well, all of a sudden, these lights come on from just up the road behind me. I pull onto the crappy gravel road and start making my way back towards town, and the truck followed. I drove slowly and calmly, and they got so close behind me that they nearly clipped my car with their bumper, and they kept backing off and pulling in close again, like a cat playing with a mouse. I completely ignored them and continued to drive normally, until I made it to the turn into town where they decided to finally screw off in the other direction. I've never felt that kind of fear before, nor since.
Starting point is 01:35:42 I'm not really sure what was going on or what their intentions were, and I don't really care either. I, 31, female, had a very uncomfortable experience at work tonight, and I wanted some thoughts to make sure that I'm not overreacting. For backstory, I've been helping at a small family-owned convenience store down the street from my house for the past few months. It's just a husband and wife and their niece, so they needed someone else for a family emergency, and they trust me. That said, it's kind of a shady gas station. Lots of strange people come through. I'm not exactly someone who blends into a crowd like this. Anyways, this guy came in earlier, and I heard him say, wow.
Starting point is 01:36:47 when he saw me, and then he started complimenting my hair, and I was like, uh, thanks, and told him his total. Not an abnormal interaction, but it's just the way that he looked at me that threw red flags all over the situation. After I gave him his total, he claimed that he left his card in the car and was going to go look for it. So, I was like, no problem. I helped the other couple people in the store. A minute after those two left, he came back in, this time holding his phone oddly to his chest, and then he started asking where he was.
Starting point is 01:37:32 I was like, uh, well, I think it would be easier to tell you where you were going if you're turned around. And this is X road. And he told me where, very next town over, so I just gave him basic directions back to the town he was going towards. It's literally a straight shot down the road that he was on.
Starting point is 01:37:56 Then, he started complimenting me again about my eyes, my eyebrows. He asked my height, my age, if I was single. So I just redirected again, or lied, about my age. I said older than I am. I'm told I look a lot younger than I am. I get early 20s a lot. After ignoring his last question, I asked if he still wanted the stuff that he had came in for.
Starting point is 01:38:25 He said yes. I told him his total, and he was like, Oh, I left my wallet in the car. This was at the same time that another customer had pulled up. He'd sat his phone down on the counter and forgot it when he walked out to go get his wallet. It was open on video. I immediately started calling my husband, who was seconds away.
Starting point is 01:38:51 Sure enough, I clicked the recent video and he had been recording our conversation. I deleted it. Then I clicked on recently deleted, and I deleted it there too. My husband answered the phone, and he knows when I'm at work if I call and don't speak, to just shut up and come to me right then. He walked back in, gave me a $5 bill, and I asked him if he found his card, and also mentioned that his phone had been going off on the counter and to not forget it. He was like, oh, my card?
Starting point is 01:39:27 Oh, no, I have other cards. Okay, then why did you need to leave to go get it? But I just said okay and to have a nice day. So, then he went and sat in the parking lot with the door open until my husband pulled up. He left the opposite way as my husband's, and of course neither of us could see a tag number. It was such a concerning encounter. I didn't like it at all. How are you lost holding a phone with signal, obviously, as it was getting messages,
Starting point is 01:40:01 and claiming to be lost when Google Maps exists? And why were you recording me? What the actual hell? I don't want to be lost. to be at work anymore right now. This happened when I was around the ages of 11 to 13. I'm 20 now, by the way. We had it rough.
Starting point is 01:40:32 Our family lived off of minimum wage. My dad was an alcoholic. My siblings were banned from our neighbor's houses because they were accused of stealing. One of our neighbors that lived right next to our house was a teacher. Let's call him A. He worked at our local high school. He lived with his. wife, and let's call her B, and his two kids. We were friends with his kids, and occasionally spent
Starting point is 01:40:59 afternoons at their house with our other friends. The husband had a brother that had mental problems caused by drug addiction, call him C, that lived just beside their house, like a duplex, but with his door facing our fence and A.B.'s door facing the road. There were times when we were watering our plants that C would come up to our fence, and show his tongue as if he was trying to lick the air in front of me while making eye contact. We don't usually hang out at our garden because of this. If we had to go to A and B's house, either has to come out and watch us go in, so C won't touch us, especially me, because I was just so terrified of him. But still, this was our only house that we were welcome to and we were dumb little kids. One day I was coming home from school.
Starting point is 01:41:56 As I unlocked our gate and went in, I saw C picking our doorknob with a flattened spoon. He ran when he saw me and climbed up the fence back to his house. To say that I was mortified was an understatement. I told his brother about it, but they did nothing. I thought that he was the only creep, and I also gave it to that thought that maybe he was just really struggling with his mental state. A few months passed by, and my dad was away. By the way, I did have two siblings. All of us were girls. So when my dad left for something, we were only females left. One night, I heard a discreet, pst, while I was filling our water containers. I ignored it, but then I heard it the second time.
Starting point is 01:42:47 I looked around and saw that it was A calling me from the other side of our fence. He signaled that I should go outside because he was going to give me something. It was a 20-P-po bill, rolled really tight. This was weird because when he handed me the bill, his other hand was inside of his shorts. It happened again after a few days. In this time, he was wearing only a towel on his lower half, and his hand was, again, inside the towel. clearly doing something, because I could see his forearm moving.
Starting point is 01:43:22 This time I was really creeped out, and I went inside immediately. I never told my parents about this. I noticed that he was also calling my other sister, and I told her to stop going whenever he called, and she did. We never went to their house again. We transferred to the province after that. Since I attended the high school he was teaching at, and some of my friends are his students, I still heard stories.
Starting point is 01:43:52 He was really into the female students, mostly sarcastic to males. Years after, it was discovered that he had inappropriate relations with some of his students. I don't know what happened after that, but I still haven't told my parents this story. This is not as scary as most stories, but... it was really unsettling for me at the time. So this happened in 2020. I, female, 21, but at the time, 19, lived in a flat above a senior residence. Since I work for that company, I could live there fairly cheap,
Starting point is 01:44:46 because the company dealt with the costs. I sometimes did a night shift as well, and in the night shifts you basically look in each apartment from the senior, to check if they're all there, since almost all of them have Alzheimer's. After that, you're supposed to clean the kitchen, living room, the library, and do the dishes as well as wash the clothes. Every now and then a bell will go off because one of the residents needs help with something, so you have to go there and help them. There was already a break-in a few years prior to that, so the company installed cameras around the house.
Starting point is 01:45:26 All people that live and work there know about it. On that day, I had an uneasy feeling and just couldn't bring myself to sleep in this flat. So I left to sleep at my parents' house. When I came home the next day, because I forgot something, I saw that the police were there. They were questioning the night shift, and then they looked at me and asked for my ID and asked what I was doing there. I explained that I lived in the residence above, and I had forgotten something that I needed for work. They proceeded to ask me if I was home the last night, to which I said that I was not. I finally had the guts to ask what was going on, and then got told that someone had broken in that night.
Starting point is 01:46:15 After that, I asked if they needed the camera footage, and their faces lit up as they said yes. I found it weird how they got so excited, but I'm not one to judge. They probably hoped that it would make it easier. I then called my boss, and she came with a laptop about 15 minutes later. We all looked through the footage together. It was creepy to see how two people carefully walked into the garden, and one of them looked through a window, and you can see him closely watching the night shift.
Starting point is 01:46:51 The other took a different route and walked around the house, peeking into an apartment of a resident while they were sleeping. He then walked a bit further around the house and stood under the window of the library. We could then see how the night shift went into the basement to wash the clothes. As soon as she was down in the basement, the person who was watching her ran to the other and gave a thumbs up. They then proceeded to pry open the window, One of them jumped in and looked around confused.
Starting point is 01:47:24 Now, here's why. A few years prior, when the first break-in had happened, that was the room where the medicine was kept. After that, we relocated that into a safer room. They probably just wanted the medicine, since a few of the residents have strong painkillers, which are hard to get. And they probably played part in the first break-in,
Starting point is 01:47:50 and hoped that the medicine would still be there. They got confused when the room looked completely different. They ended up stealing nothing and just running away again. As far as I know, they were caught about two weeks later, but it makes me wonder, what would have happened if I had been home that night? Because this happened at a time where I would always go outside to take a little walk through the garden. I have insomnia, and this helps me about.
Starting point is 01:48:20 bit. Would I have met them? And, if so, how would they have reacted? So, the story started when I was 14, 17 now. I used to play in a park with my friends. I had a crush on a boy who was 14 as well, who used to play with us, and he too had a crush on me. And he had a friend who was older than him, 16 to 17, maybe. So, we all used to play together. I always saw my crush's friend as a brother. But his feelings for me were not appropriate. He liked me.
Starting point is 01:49:10 So one day, on my birthday, he randomly approached me and told me that he loved me. I replied that I did not have the same feelings for him and that I liked someone else. He did not take the no as an answer. Now, that's when the creepy part started. I recently joined Instagram and somehow he found my Insta ID and began messaging about how he loved me. I rejected him multiple times, but he just wouldn't stop, so I blocked him.
Starting point is 01:49:42 Now, he started making multiple Insta accounts to stalk me, and messaged me from each one of them. And I kept blocking him. I was annoyed and enraged at this point and threatened him that I would report him to the cyber police. So, he took it up his ego, and kind of started following me at places. He would take the same route as mine, knew the timings about when I was going to the park, when I was going to buy groceries. So whenever I went out of the house, he would creepily stare at me, and would continue ogling until I was out of his sight.
Starting point is 01:50:22 He wouldn't even budge his eyes for a second. When I used to play, I stopped playing with him. but he continuously roamed around me and stared. Now, I was scared to a point where I started hesitating to go out of the house. Whenever I saw him, my heart would drop, and I started hyperventilating. I thought that it was only me who found him creepy, but when my mom was like, who's that guy that always roams around you? He doesn't give me good vibes.
Starting point is 01:50:54 Try to stay away from him. I was like, yep, he is bad. and you know that that person is not very good if your mother's instincts sense something fishy. This went on for a whole two years, and his staring or messaging and stalking from fake accounts didn't stop. He even went to the extent to manipulate a friend of mine and my crush, whom I started dating, and trying to tell them that I was a slut. We didn't break up, though. That's when I had had enough and decided to take action. I went straight up to that bastard, and I slapped him right in his face. Still, to this day, whenever I hear his name or see his picture, I get a panic attack,
Starting point is 01:51:45 and my hands and legs start shaking in fear. And, in fact, he was sexually attracted to one of my friends, and he asked her if he could see her chest, but she was too scared to do anything to him or tell any adults. So, this happened a few years ago. If you follow my page, you'll know my button stories, but this is the one that changed how I move around during the night. I used to go out during the Canadian winter early evening. I enjoy the cold, believe it or not, and I found stores to be more dead closer to 7 p.m.
Starting point is 01:52:34 Damn you, COVID. Though the change of our eyes. hours led to things being safer as stores have people in them now into the later hours. My bag used to be a massive halo, more like a sack than a classic backpack. I could put endless amounts of buttons and pins on it, which ended up being a pain from endless buttons popping off. So, this cold night, I'm walking to the little strip mall that has a game stop and Toys R Us, along with the grocery store.
Starting point is 01:53:08 I was walking up there to get some dinner as the fam was out at events, and I didn't want to go. Walking there was all right. Walking back was a different story. There was almost no one around. I got some dinner and headed over to the grocery store when I got that feeling of being watched. I looked around, but there was no one.
Starting point is 01:53:35 Odd, but I keep on trekking. In the grocery store, it's dead, but at the cash register I got that same feeling. I looked outside as maybe there was someone there. No. Behind me? No. The cashier asks if I'm all good, and I responded with, yeah, take my stuff, and leave. I head over to the toy store and hear loud crunching behind me.
Starting point is 01:54:03 I turn, and a man is. there. He says, Oh, sorry, I was just reading your buttons. It's dark, like wintertime dark at 8 p.m. And you're reading buttons in a darkened parking lot? I don't think so. I was cordial, but weirded out, and then I quickly left and entered the store, and I waited inside for a bit.
Starting point is 01:54:29 Half an hour passes, and I get my stuff and leave. To note, I've had people. read my buttons in the day or in a store, not right behind me in an icy, crappily lit parking lot. When I leave, I get that feeling again. I couldn't see him, but I knew someone was there. I rely on my size for intimidation. I was 17 at the time, but I looked 20.
Starting point is 01:54:58 This A-hole had no fear. I moved quickly through the parking lot, and I heard his loud steps behind me. I made it across the street just as the walk signal changed and the traffic flowed. I caught the bus and I never looked back to see him. I don't know what his true intentions were and I don't even remember what his face looked like. I never had a creepy encounter again as I was never out that late again for a bit, especially in that area.
