This is Teachable Moments. I'm Dr. John Robinson. I'd like to ask you about your parenting style.
Your options are dictator, patsy, rescuer, or guide and role model. The first three options really are
about you. To be your child's guide and role model, it's about your child. The key to becoming
your child's guide and role model is to exercise grace-filled parenting. As we begin or renew your
parenting journey, we usually go by trial and error or just repeat how we were parenting
growing up. Sometimes we phone it in or leave the hard parts to someone else. My preference is for you to fill
every moment of your parenting journey, every interaction with your child with grace. Grace is a quality
of calm understanding, a safe haven for your children in their storms of life. It involves gentle guidance
and meaningful direction. It involves strategic firmness and clear understanding of choices,
providing reward for good choices and consequences for bad choices. Proverbs 226 tells us to
train up a child in the ways of the Lord, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
In Ephesians 6, verses 1 through 4, Paul tells us, children, obey your parents in the Lord,
for this is right. Honor your father and your mother is the first commandment with a promise,
that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children of wrath, but bring them up in the training
and admonition of the Lord. These and other verses in Scripture are the foundation for grace-filled
parenting. Listen before you react. Empathize. Understand the context before you decide what to do.
These are the components of grace-filled parenting. I'm Dr. John Robinson, licensed to clinical
psychologist, and Christian parenting author. This has been Teachable Moments.
