I'm Dr. John Robinson, and this is Teachable Moments.
Are you looking for stress relief and more family income?
Try becoming a mompreneur.
There are two kinds of stress.
Distress is better known and accounts for negative bad stress.
Think disagreeable mother-in-law coming for a visit.
U-Stress is the lesser-known cousin of distress.
U-Stress is the good stuff, enjoying things that induce calm and relaxation.
Activities can be either distressedful or you stressful depending on how you approach them.
In our now difficult times, most families need two breadwinners to survive to pay all the bills.
With the horrific cost of child care, the internet at your fingertips, and the availability of distance employment,
a new kind of employment has emerged.
To fill the gaps in income, make your hobby both enjoyable and lucrative, become a mompreneur.
That is, you can be both mom and entrepreneur.
at the same time. It's a balancing act, but it can be done well and become a stress relief exercise.
My good friend and colleague, Emily Graham, known for Mighty Moms, has put together a starter kit
for launching your career as a mompreneur. Here are some ways to make it happen. First, pick an
activity that you love, are good at, and has value to others. Network in your community or
check online for inspiration. Bend the ears of those success stories who have preceded you. Get excited
about your new adventure. Second, set goals, use a monthly plan or template to stay on track,
create space in your home where you, quote, go to work, identify your customers, and target your
audience. Reach them by creating new customer and or refer a friend discounts. Become official
by identifying your business model with the Small Business Administration. Find legal and accounting
resources to draw on. Now that you've established the preneur part, what about the mom part? This
involves staying on top of things, balancing self-care with other care, and finding a place for
everything and for everyone. With small children, their needs are time-sensitive. If you can't delegate,
then get to it and set aside your work until you're off kid duty. With older kids,
plan activities for and with them. Also, where possible, include them in your mundane work activities,
such as packaging, product, mailouts, or enhancing your web design. Finally, set boundly,
and compartmentalize so that all needs can be met.
Don't forget the me time to calm down, relax, and re-energize.
In my new book, The Healing Journey, Overcoming Adversity on the Path of the Good Life,
many of my patients found their mompreneur self as a way to pay it forward after embracing
their healing journey.
When you have escaped your stuckness and learned how to soar, you have the skill set and
resources to succeed as a mompreneur.
