It is finally July and the NIL laws are now in effect for athletes to make some money. The boys talk about what this looks like so far and wonder if any changes will be made for past athletes. Crack a cold one and enjoy the show.

Touchdown, Wolverines! All right, welcome back to Blue by 90. I am Justin, joined by Jack and Kalen, as always. It is, holy shit, it's July. Oh my God, July 1st. I don't, I mean, I am really looking forward to football season, like want it to be fall. But also, guys, I'm not ready for summer to just like fly by like it does every single year. Dude, I'm actually totally opposite of you.

I'm kind of like KFC put that video up on Instagram. And he's like, dude, summer is just not the same when you're adult. It's the same as like every other part of the year you're just sweating and like that's me i just fucking sweat all the time heather thought it was a great idea to have the ac off today and have the windows open so it's only supposed to be a high of 75 and i'm getting to 82 i'm in my house sweating my balls off i got a cranked ac on it's uh i don't know man i'm ready for fall not only for cooler weather but we're another month closer to tailgating. And football, like you said. That's the real story, right?

I mean, there's really only one season that matters. Tailgating season. That's right, baby. I agree. I will say this. Like, we've kind of talked about it before. I am 150% excited for tailgating. I'm about 20 percent excited for the actual football season so yeah either one i mean i'm excited either way yeah the math that math definitely adds up

um but i just i want to enjoy like some beaches and some boats and some stuff i want to enjoy some beaches and some boats and some stuff. I want to enjoy 80-degree weather in the summer. Unlike Jack, I actually enjoy being outside and being in warm weather. Too hot. Yeah. I mean, 82 is not too hot. I feel like that's pretty normal. I will say the humidity lately has been fucked. It's been ridiculous.

I'm like, if it's hotter, like, the hotter, the better. Like, it could be, like, 100, and I would be like, this is a little warm. Fuck you. Liar. Too hot. could be like a hundred and i would be like this is a little warm like fuck you liar too hot i uh you know jacklyn is the same like her dad's from florida too and so like they're like they want it

to be like 95 and her mom is is went to school down there too she plays softball at florida and they're like she'll like put a jacket on if it's like 84 it's like jesus you're i'm not quite there that that's like almost a psychopath can't live with those kind of people tell me about it she's sitting there with a jacket on i'm like pitting out you know that's usually how it goes so all right so july 1st it means that we're like a third of the way through the summer and one month closer to uh to football season it also means which was probably the biggest college news all time maybe it's up there pretty up. But name image likeness is now into effect officially from the NCAA, and college athletes can now make money. And my first reaction was this.

We tweeted this out from BlueEye90. Did it not seem like, okay, everyone's been, like, fighting over this for, like, 10 years, and NCAA football went away because of it and all this stuff. And then all of a sudden, the NCAA is like, so do you guys want it July 1st? Does that sound good? How about tomorrow? And then it just all happened.

And now everything's just going haywire. Well, that's just one thing. I was kind of confused. Wasn't it always the plan for July 1st? Yeah, but didn't it – I mean, since when? I thought it was three months ago. Yeah. I don't know.

I thought it was going to happen. I wasn't going to follow it closely enough for, like, you know, for that to be, like, factual. Like, I was like, oh, it's going to be, like, over the summer. I don't know. I can't really read, so it's not – like, I didn't know any news that came from it so yeah i thought literally your illiteracy has fucked us once again i thought there was like some

like like a bunch of states passed a number of laws saying they could have name image likeness by july 1 that might be where it was from that might be where i saw that number and then the ncaa was trying to like battle that and they took it like all the way up to some iop court and then very recently they lost in court or something like that and then like within the last week or two and so that's why it kind of was just like boom july maybe that's what it was then maybe i wasn't paying attention to the fact that the ncaa could have just like shut it down dude the ncaa rules all and they're the worst people in the world and so i'm sure that ncaa president mark emmer is just like crying in his office today like oh my god i make a billion dollars a year god forbid one of these athletes makes 10 grand off of an autograph i will say i i can't

stand the people that are like oh my god this is gonna ruin all of college sports all everything is you know it's just a pro that's gonna ruin these kids blah blah blah is it gonna change everything yes it's 100 going to change everything? Yes. It's 100% going to change everything. Is some of it maybe going to change for the worse? And there's going to be some things that come out of this that are like, ah, damn, there's some issue with a feud between this offensive lineman and the quarterback. Yeah, there will be some of that.

But guess what? These kids have been not making money for decades upon decades where they could have and it's probably a good thing and especially if you're a michigan fan this is a really good thing you got top five brand in the nation that kids will want to come to and it's going to help recruiting absolutely no doubt i was going to say too i saw something on uh twitter it's hardly unnecessary roughness or something like that but i mean you gotta think kids are gonna be fighting for playing time even more than they already are now it's like oh shit i could make a bug or two you know more time

more often i'm on the field more often i'm making plays more often i'm doing this more if i'm doing that not not saying that you know college athletes ever had an issue with that before um but you know there's an actual monetary incentivation or an incentive i'm sorry word incentivization that they can get you know in real time instead of having to you know technically wait till they get signed by a team from the nfl you know i don't know. Might see something there. Might not. Talking out of my ass right now. I have no idea.

No, I think you're right in a way. Like, I think where it becomes difficult is that for Michigan fans, at least, like, they're going to have to prove it on the field for a lot of us, right? Like, yeah, there's name, name image likeness out there now but like it's hard for me to pick anybody besides maybe like an Aiden Hutchinson who I would say like yeah I would be interested in their brand because I haven't really seen a whole lot from any of these guys on the team to justify me going and spending like 50 on a shirt you know what i mean yeah right yes the timing like yeah it would come to like the fall time right like somebody has a big game all right i'm gonna go spend some money on their shit right so it would be more so down

the road not necessarily right now as far as what i'm saying but um i agree with you 100 i think it would be really cool. Let's say Aiden Hutchinson has a game-winning sack against, you know, Michigan State or something like that, and then, like, puts a picture on a T-shirt or something and then sells it on the next Sunday. Like, that's pretty sick, right? I'd probably go buy a couple things like that. But I think, you know, where it gets hairy is, like, all right think you know when it gets where it gets hairy is like all right you know this car

dealership all of a sudden just gives them a car for signing one autograph you know it's like i don't i don't care i don't give a shit but i think that like that's where things get weird right isn't that not an issue now though i thought that like they could do that shit now right i'm i know but it's i i think yes you're right like they can do whatever i i don't know maybe there's gonna be some stipulations on like there's maybe there's gonna be a cap but like a a cap on how much you can make for a certain amount of signed items or certain things i don't know i could see the ncaa definitely trying to to like handle that right where do you really see this becoming like a problem though like i'm kind of like hey man if the kid wants to drive some challenger to practice cool you know like i guess i don't

really see where it becomes i could see i could see some locker room issues i could see that the quarterback you know is just just drowning in money and he's driving six camaros to to the to the practice facility and his center like isn't making anything or is making a fraction of that even though his center may be like a first round draft pick and the quarterback's not even that good and then there's like i don't know there's some friction there could you see that i mean i feel like they could kind of be that already in a way like a kid who comes from a high class background got a lot of coaching came to school and a kid who maybe worked really hard from a lower class background and so they come from you know different socioeconomic kind of backgrounds and they're in the same uh locker room i guess it's different if like it's personally your money right like and you're yeah you know you're a 19 year old kid

you're getting flashy with it right you got 10 rings on or something like i don't know yeah i can see it i mean i think these kids are coming from different socioeconomic backgrounds anyway like some kids are already pulling up to practice and fucking chargers and some kids are riding fucking scooters right like i i see where you guys are coming from if they're coming around flashing and all around talking about it to their teammates like all that kind of shit like maybe it could cause some issues but i mean i'm sure that kind of shit happens in the nfl or you know you got the superstar guy making a shit ton of money you're also probably making a shit ton of money but they're making like a shit ton way more and they're upset about it i mean

i could see it i'm gonna assume it's not gonna be an issue what i'm almost thinking is it's gonna level the playing field for recruiting among the power you know the power five teams um just because that way let's say you're going to bama you've got a hundred fucking five stars you know going there and like different you know fans buying maybe just let's just go back to a couple years ago um fucking jalen waddle stuff and then you know maybe davante smith but maybe not at the time where if he went to you know michigan everybody buying his shit at michigan it's like a larger you know if not as large um fan base and you know you're you're getting all that money instead of just like a little portion of that money like maybe that

that could play into it where i think it could level the playing field among you know different teams and only focusing on this fan base instead of like having your stuff divided between 20 guys in this fan base i mean depends what your goal is right like you want to win national championship do you want to make money do you want to get a bunch of playing time like i think it's just an additional thing that will go into recruiting pitches and yeah maybe it'll work out for some teams maybe it won't i don't know that's a good point do you guys think that this will help maybe some like smaller more under the radar teams kind of like maybe grab a you know a five star or a high four star that might be able

to transform their team that's what i'm thinking i think you might see more of that yeah just because of that right like they'd be the big name on that team so everybody wants to buy stuff that relates to them you know yeah i mean i definitely think you know let's say let's talk about like maybe a boise state for example lower level team that probably only has like probably not zero five stars and maybe a couple four stars. If you're the one five star that goes to Boise, everyone's buying only your gear. Right. Right. Right. Jack's point. It's like you're a five star that goes to Bama. You're one of 20 on the team and you're you may you know, the fan base is obviously way bigger at Bama. So maybe equals out a bit.

But like, you're not that one guy. Right. So I agree with that. That's going to be interesting. One thing I thought about, too, is like, all right, I don't know what these contracts or whatever with, let's say, a car dealership or something. So let's say a car dealership gives some kid a deal, right? And they're going to do five commercials or something for him. Well, let's say they get to three commercials, the season ends,

the kid wants to transfer out. Is he, like, bound to that contract? Or can the car dealership say, hey, we had you in contract because of your name at Michigan, because of the brand at Michigan. You can't transfer and go to Akron. These car dealerships or these commercials don't mean as much to us anymore. Like, I don't know. I'm sure that would be written in the contract somewhere.

I think you're saying, though, yeah. I mean, they'd have to be smart about getting these contracts written up and it's like, you know, written up and all that stuff. I mean, it's like, you know, they're literally a professional at this point. It's been admitted now that they are professional athletes to a degree. And, you know, there's got to be professional contracts. But, yeah, like, I mean, that could nullify the contract. Maybe you have to give the money back at that point. Right. Like, yeah, that's where it gets like kind of shady. Yeah.

And the other thing is, you know, these are, like we're saying, younger 19, 20, 21-year-old kids. We see it all the time, right? Baker Mayfield getting drunk on the corner. You know that kind of stuff is going to come up. What do you guys think? Like, how is that going to be handled? I mean, they're going to get some good bar promotions. They're not allowed to.

That was like they came out and said, like, you can't get any NCAA banned substance, no tobacco. I think it said no alcohol, no gambling. I saw BYU said you can't do coffee. Yeah, BYU said you can't do coffee because you're not allowed to have coffee as a Mormon. Wait, what? Yeah, Mormons can't have coffee because you're not allowed to have coffee as a mormon wait what yeah mormons can't have coffee they see it as a drug wow i mean i can't disagree i mean it's the drug i take it's definitely i mean it's the it's the biggest drug that i indulge in oh fuck it i interesting all right today i don't know that yeah they also can soaking and you gotta be crazy to go to byu man

either that or you it's like a complete lie man i just don't don't get it. I'm sorry. I know I live maybe a different life than them, but wow. Oh, my goodness. I don't know. Oh, God. So, I mean, I think if you're a lawyer, though, like getting back to it, if you're a lawyer, you're calling every single one of these kids because. Fuck yeah. I mean, I feel like that maybe, Kalen, you asked like the negatives.

There's going to be some kids that get into legal trouble with this because they just kind of just say yes. They aren't reading through it. They get bad advice from somebody. And then all of a sudden, there are going to be some people that probably like get into debt or something because of this. Like in the bottom, like last, like like fine print it says like you have to pay all this back plus some or some i don't know there's gonna be some shit people scamming people right yeah dude when i was 18 if you said like hey you know sell these gummy worms and i'll give you 15 grand i would have been like hell yeah i would have not even thought twice. And then I would have, you know, soaked them in vodka and ate them for TikTok.

And then, you know, now it's a problem. I would like to assume that the universities are ahead of this, right? And they like gave seminars or fucking whatever to these kids, like saying like, hey, if you're you're gonna do this go about it the right way get a lawyer read the contracts do all this stuff where if it was like us like the fuck kids care about us why are we getting offered shit like we wouldn't know what the fuck's going on we'd be like oh sweet 15 grand like kaylen said right like sure i'll do it yeah the i if michigan was really on top of, they would have like a whole department that's like, oh, you want to set your business up? OK, like we're going to help you. I feel like one of you guys brought this up on another podcast before. Because you're right. You should do that. Should be a thing like we have this department now to set you up for success.

guys like that to or like a xavier simpson for example you want guys like that to be able to make some money off of what they're doing now instead of like thinking about oh well they'll all make it at some point in the nfl or in the nba or in the mlb they don't you know and so like i even think i think the big thing that we haven't even touched on yet is women's sports a lot of these women's sports don't have really good professional leagues out there you know even softball the the national what is the mpf national pro fast pitch they get paid like 10 grand for a summer and so they have to make their money off of doing camps all year round they get a few endorsements they play a

couple other things but it's like you know for for girls that are playing in the college world series the softball college world series like make your money then because that's probably going to be the height of you on espn right yeah yeah the women's league just don't get enough recognition, right? Like, yeah, you're right, 100%. Yeah, I mean, I would love to see this kind of elevate a lot of those lesser sports that – I don't want to say lesser sports. Lesser recognized. Lesser recognized. Yeah. That don't get recognized, right? Like, that's, I think, where this could really shine.

Yeah. Totally. Fucking hockey. A sport that does kind of get recognized, but, like, you know, this could really up it for them. Because there's some diehard fucking hockey fans. Like, Michigan softball fans are just fucking diehards for that. I know that's for sure. Holy shit.

I'm thinking of, like, just cameos alone. Right? Yeah. Like, I think every – i thought about it yesterday like we should have all been buying stock in cameo last night because there are gonna be a hundred thousand new accounts made today you know and so like i i don't know i i'd probably pay 10 bucks for isaiah livers to give a shout out or something just for fun to my buddy like yeah i don't know little shit like that like it's kind of fun and it's not going to break the bank but it's like fuck i gotta go go out

I don't even know if you have to pay to be honest, but you can go on there and you can play them like fucking 2k that's right and then i i think you can also like watch as well

and i'm sure there's like ads in there and everything right yeah i saw i saw brandon tweeted out that he said he said since uh michigan doesn't have their players available for the media can i try and get an interview with them on Yolk Gaming? That's awesome. Can I play them and interview them while I'm playing since they won't let me talk to them normally? That's hilarious. Classic.

I don't know.

I thought it was anything against beeline, but it was, like, this super weird situation internally that, like, he, he like didn't want to be i guess associated like you said but would do it for would do it for harbaugh so who knows i don't know but um i i don't know he seems like he wants the the banners back and this could be the time

that he comes back to chrysler with juwan and they do a whole thing that seems kind of like the perfect time to do it right it would be fucking awesome it would be awesome if that happens like put the banners back up i saw they've got um some of the they didn't have this in chrysler before in their practice uh practice arena or practice courts whatever you want to call it they've got like all the like um I think it's the Final Four appearances, like national titles and stuff up there. I noticed they didn't have the Fab Five era, but they had

can either review or something along those lines anybody who was sent to prison on like weed charges right like possession of like anything less than a certain amount or something like that i feel like this is similar to that, or maybe something like that could get passed and then, you know, Reggie Bush or whoever, you know, could, you know, bring it to court or wherever they need to go to get it reviewed to see if it can be overturned. You know, I don't, I feel like that's kind of where this will head.

So that means Michigan offered him 350, right? Hey, maybe. Maybe he just wanted a really good education you know yeah i don't know man i don't know that jim harbaugh just whispering in his ear right yeah i'll tell you what i'd take the fucking 350 i'd take percent i i i would never be down 300 that's for sure yeah i wouldn't turn down $300,000. That would be really funny, and it'll be really interesting if guys like Johnny Manziel go on different podcasts and start, like, telling their stories. Because what are they going to do now?

Just because like June was that crazy month, there was a dead period up until June 1st. So I don't even know who's like, who's hot on. I know there's Clayton put out something that they're going to be a bunch of recruits coming very soon so hopefully we'll see some um yeah i mean the one thing i would say about recruiting is that like the michigan fan base just needs to like kind of shut up about like stars right like i saw some caring i saw some people well i saw some people like saying some kind of like nasty stuff to some

kids who were like three stars and i was just like dude like come on man these are kids they're doing really well they're getting recruited which is exactly why they're what they're out there playing for so like and we picked them up so what's there to be displeased about? Like, shut up, Twitter, you know? So that would be my one message on recruiting. Yeah, I mean, in general, I think, yeah. I don't know. There's a couple things there. Like, some people are like, stars don't matter, right?
