Starting point is 00:00:00 This is the University of Michigan. Touchdown, Michigan! The beat of Michigan ball! And they've caught extra pass. And it goes to the wind! The three-pointer by Jordan Poole! Down the sideline! Peebles-Jones!
Starting point is 00:00:21 Touchdown, Wolverines! All right. Welcome back to Blue by 90. I'm Justin, joined by Jack Tanner and Kalen today. It is 9.36 a.m. on November 26th, and Ohio State football has still not posted the final score on social media yet. Stuff. I love it. They're probably trying to figure out.
Starting point is 00:00:51 They're probably just queuing in-house. They might have fired their social media manager. They're going to start off with him. That's true. Then they fire Ryan Day and then, you know, make their moves from there. Yeah, do you think, like, from the top, they're just like, it doesn't matter who it is. Like, we can't afford to lose to Michigan three times in a row.
Starting point is 00:01:08 And not fire someone. Whoever was running the Twitter, like, tough go, but, you know, you were part of it. You were part of the problem. Yeah. What the hell? It's a team effort that they lost. I mean, did you guys – I mean, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:20 we're talking about from the top down. Did you guys see the video of athletic director Gene Smith, like, arguing with somebody on the sideline? And then it was like, I'll get the Big Ten involved to take care of this. You're so soft, bro. That guy's retiring soon. That is the most on-brand thing he could have said. Do you know my anti-type vibe?
Starting point is 00:01:38 He actually said that? Something along the lines of, I'll get the Big Ten to take care of this. I don't know what the argument was about, but he was arguing with somebody from the Michigan side on the sideline, some sort of sideline official or something. I don't know exactly what it was, but I know Barstool had tweeted it out. It was just a soft moment for an extremely soft program. Very soft. But, you know, it's not soft.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Our annual tradition now of popping champagne on the pod. Let's go. Let's get it. I thought we were going to a different direction there. And we said, you know, it's not soft, but we, we all know. Yesterday at like 45. Also, I just, I want to say, well, aitlin's popping the champagne which is glorious um you know we make jokes about ohio state but that's a really good team and you know i don't want to diminish what michigan did right like that's impressive what they've done the last
Starting point is 00:02:36 three years that's one of the best teams in college football and for michigan to make them look pedestrian like makes it even sweeter there we go nice. Nice. Love that. Love that. Hold on. Hold on. One, two, three? Three? Three times? I think it's three. Back to back?
Starting point is 00:02:53 I think it's three. Third base? Third. Third. Three in honor. That was nice. I'm coming for some champagne. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Absolutely. That was very nice of Michigan in honor of Ryan Day to win for the third time in a row for, you know, in honor of third base. Yeah, I appreciate the respect and the rivalry that we can show. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Yeah, absolutely. I mean, do we want to talk about just the in-stadium experience? Let's start with the tailgate. The tailgate, we got there at 6. Fired up, dude. You heard me crack that beer at like 6.30. I love that sound.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Jack set the tone by being the first one there for the first time in his life. Appreciate that. Took a lap around the stadium because he was so early. Yeah. Literally was too early to the tailgate. He texted the great. I was still hopping out of the shower. I looked at my phone.
Starting point is 00:03:49 He texted. He's already there. I'm like, holy shit. And then we get there. I'm like, where's Jack? Well, Jack was so early. He had to take a lap around the stadium to wait for us. Dude, he was so early.
Starting point is 00:03:59 He told me that we're leaving at 545. And at 544, I was like, all right, man. You ready? And he's like, oh, I already left. I was like all right man you ready and he's like oh i already left i was like oh shit dude my bad you guys live together that's the best part i know well i didn't realize he uh he had responded so i was like oh he probably like he's probably like still sleeping so i'm like i'm like i was up since like 4 30 just like ready to go took a shower cleaned up my neck hair a little bit. And I was like, I'm fucking ready to go.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I was in shambles. I told you guys this, but I don't know if you've ever experienced it where you're trying to go to bed and you just open your eyes and you're like, was I asleep or I just lay there with my eyes closed and not asleep for like three hours? That's how it felt. I woke up at like 2 and then went back to bed at 245 until 445 it was i mean i i uh set my alarm for 415 and woke up at 4 a.m without an alarm just naturally because i was just buzzing already so we're just woke up ready to fucking rip and i mean we were we were there right on the dot at 6 a.m as they opened up the lot
Starting point is 00:05:07 ready to go setting up the i mean the first two hours of the tailgate were in the dark that's not an exaggeration and it was all right it was pitch black when we're trying to set this shit up which is not easy um but tanner did you end up talking to people huh did tanner end up talking to those news people did they come by yeah yeah yeah okay they so i want to i want to talk about that because they were like what does it mean to build something from the ground up i was like hey hold on now i came on a couple years later so i gave credit to you guys but it was a lot of fun man i told the i told the news guy from cbs uh the Toledo affiliate, I was like, I don't think I've talked to a news person since I was playing high school football.
Starting point is 00:05:49 So this is pretty sick. But I'm excited to see that come out. Humble brag. We were holding up the line, dude. People were honking at us mid-interview. And then as they were driving by, they were just like, go blue. I was like, all right. I do love that.
Starting point is 00:06:03 As long as they were Michigan fans, they were like, all right, I can't be mad today. We're all in this together. I just wonder what those grew up. I do want to bring up an Ohio State fan that made a celebrity appearance at the tailgate. JT Barrett was hanging out. I wanted to hate him so bad, and he was so fucking nice.
Starting point is 00:06:21 He was the nicest, fucking down to earth guy ever. I'm a big JT Barrett fan. Dude, did you guys see Caleb? Like he did it like four times. Like he just, he'd look at JT Barrett and to just throw up his hands, like show it to you as short. And he just laughed it off. He was really cool.
Starting point is 00:06:39 My dad, I kept telling people like JT Barrett is here. Like I have no idea why or how JT Barrett is here. I have no idea why or how, but JT Barrett is literally playing flip cup with us at our tailgate. What is going on right now? I so badly wanted to hate him, and he was so nice. But he can still hold that L for, I think, another 370 days is next year's game. So he can hold that L. But I told him. He can just come back to you and
Starting point is 00:07:06 be like i was four and oh so you can he can't i did yeah he played at ohio state i but it's he was super cool tough to talk shit to me other than the busy and short so yeah but he was super cool man we talked about the lions a little bit too um he was he was fired up after the loss you know because he coached he's an analyst with the lions, I believe so. But yeah, super cool dude. Yeah. Yeah. That's what he's in the area. So super cool dude, you know, glad his team took the L, but he was really cool to be around
Starting point is 00:07:32 and was, you know, um, I think we were very hospitable and he was very gracious. So it was, it was really cool, which never thought that we'd be talking about hanging out with JT Barrett for like a little bit. I mean, what, like that was the most absurd thing ever. I mean, tailgate vibes were just off the charts yesterday. They were high yesterday. And Leo coming through too? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Yeah. Can we talk about, too, one more thing on JT where somebody said like, oh, you didn't play school, and he just immediately FaceTimed Cardale Jones? Oh, right. Yeah, I heard that after the fact, after the game. That was amazing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:07 He just, like, facetimed him and was like, this is my boy. That's hilarious. And we had – my boy Denard's brother was there too. He's like, I got to call Denard and get him over here. But he was already at the stadium. Oh, that was Denard's brother? Yeah. It makes sense now that I think about it.
Starting point is 00:08:23 They look, like look very similar. I was wondering. I was like – Denard's brother is about 100 pounds bigger than him and doesn't run a 4-2-40. But nobody would ever fuck with him because he's the biggest man alive. He's the biggest. Big teddy bear.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I wish I would have known that. I would have gave him a hug for keeping – just for being related to the guy who kept my – I love your brother. Like a light of Michigan football for like four years when it was terrible. He's a good dude. He's a really good dude. But, yeah, tailgate vibes.
Starting point is 00:08:55 I mean, it was cold as shit. Like when we got there, it was legitimately 21 degrees. I don't know. Like we've had rain. We've had rain. We've had snow in the past. I don't know that we've ever had just that bitter cold before. But every single person just prevailed. Nobody was complaining.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Nobody was like, damn, it's freezing out. Everyone, we had the heater going. That was good. The sun was out, though. The sun was out, though. We almost needed to flip the tent because the tent was creating shade. But everyone was out in the sun just having a good time. It was like 7.30 in the morning.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Everyone's already three beers deep. It was so cold that we were playing flip cup. And if you spilled a little beer it would like freeze i had i cracked open a blue by 90 ale by north peak brewing shout out north peak and it was a slush i didn't know like they were just sitting there i was like oh here's a beer and it's just a slush i had that was the most difficult thing of the tailgate it's like okay do we keep the cooler closed to keep it warm or do we keep it open to try and melt some of these beers it was that cold out i've never had to keep beer in a cooler to keep it warm before that was wild because i so i loaded up the truck on friday because like it's not like i'm gonna
Starting point is 00:10:18 pack up the truck at four in the morning on saturday morning in the pitch black and it's less than 21 degrees um and overnight all of the beer in the back of the truck froze fucking solid and so when we got there like i realized it and then i had to put it in my truck run my truck with the heat on to unfreeze all the beer for a while which was i mean just unbelievable but but it was so much fun. Shout out to everyone who came through, had AD came through from Twitter. He's the man shotgun, a couple of beers, Waddy, Trevor. We had, I mean, I could go on and on, but we had literally hundreds of people come through
Starting point is 00:10:57 the tailgate, which was awesome. I did. I did have one. I had one person that came through those people in like the ski coats, the ski jackets. Oh, they were amazing. They were awesome. And he goes, who runs your Twitter? Because you have to have a beer with every single fan here.
Starting point is 00:11:14 That's what you said. You're like, fuck. Oh, my God. It's going to be a tough day. I'll tell you what. You did try, because after the game, you punched me a tough day. I'll tell you what. I've never – You did try because at the end of – after the game, you punched me 12 times in the sternum very hard. Did anybody else get that?
Starting point is 00:11:31 Very on brand. Right. Because that post-game tailgate, I came by. Amy and I were like, all right, dude, let's go home. We were at the bar and we were just like, all right, I'm like, I'm done. And we're like, all right, let's talk about the tailgate, see what's going on. And just the vibes, like you said earlier, pre-game-game post-game the vibes brought us back to life had a had a high noon we got out there justin was the happiest man i've ever seen ever and i was just literally
Starting point is 00:11:55 like i took my coat off and was just dancing around and and we we had multiple people that were there like waiting for me like i went i rushed the field and everything had multiple people that were there like waiting for me. Like I went, I rushed the field and everything. Had multiple people there waiting for me. And I'm literally sprinting through the crowd to go and get the music going again to hit the party. Can I, can I just, I want to talk about your dad real quick, Justin, because he is the absolute man, but Jack, I want to shout out Amy. Amy's awesome, but it was so funny.
Starting point is 00:12:24 So Jack, you and Amy worked together, obviously for those that don't know. And so you were coming back and we were just all hanging out around. absolute man but jack i want to shout out amy amy's awesome but it was so funny so jack you and amy worked together obviously for those that don't know and so you were coming back we were just all hanging out around in a circle and justin's dad was like this is your girlfriend and you were like no she's my co-worker he's like oh hey co-worker and that's all he said it was unbelievably funny it was so awkward he's the best at just coming up and making things incredibly awkward, but like in a fun way. Dude, he's like, I want to be that level of like dad funny in like 30 years. He's gotten exponentially dad funnier as he's gotten older too.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I can see it this season. You know, me and my brother, we don't have kids yet, but he's on the verge of grandpa funny. Like, he's very close. That's an elite tier to get to. Yeah, for sure. Also, I want to shout out, who dropped these off for us? The Michigan versus everybody.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Those are the autograph, Tom Brady brand, right? Yeah, autograph. Autograph. Shout out to those guys. Go download the autograph app, and you can get a bunch of rewards for literally just being a Michigan fan and reading articles and doing that. So, yeah, those guys are awesome.
Starting point is 00:13:32 They work with Tom Brady. They one time Zoomed Tom Brady into a meeting that I was in, which was fucking sick. And, yeah, it was wild. But, yeah, they're really good people there so you can go if you go to the autograph app download it you can buy a uh michigan versus everybody wristband and a dollar i think from each of them goes to champion circles for uh michigan nil um so they're doing a whole thing there so um but yeah we appreciate them i mean let's talk
Starting point is 00:14:07 about the game a little bit uh you know obviously the tailgate was was unreal vibes were unreal um once you get like inside the stadium too it's just like man this i think i talked about it on the last pod of like just the vibes are different on this day like you get into this stadium and it's 11 30 in the morning and people are just up just like ready to rip oh my god and every single person standing we had the palms going that was you know i know 2021 was loud we've had some loud games but like it was every single play was just like total juice even if it was second and four you know it didn't matter people were going nuts yeah it was uh i mean i think my voice is starting to come back a little bit but last night it was rough i drank some gatorade to try to help.
Starting point is 00:15:08 But it was, you know, try to do every bit that we could. I'll say this, though, weirdly, man, I don't know about you guys, but for me, when I was in the stadium, I felt that I was less nervous than I was for the Penn State game two weeks ago, for example, right? And I was less nervous in the last two games. And I don't know if that's just because I have the confidence in Michigan that they're going to go out and play well against this team. But I don't know if that's just because I have the confidence in Michigan that they're going to go out and play well against this team. But I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:15:28 It was just like this calmness being around 110,000 of the best fans in the country. Like it was – I don't know what that was, but I just – I felt good the whole game. Like I got nervous. It was never like prolonged. I mean, I was like nervous to make a play and stuff like that but i felt like it was more we were more hyped and ready to like go get them than it was like holy shit are we gonna win this game you know type of thing yeah the only time i really
Starting point is 00:15:55 got nervous was on that last drive in the final minute when i was like you know we settled for the field goal but we you know and and then it felt like one of those things where it's like, shit, we left too much time. And, you know, not to throw shade at Kyle McCord, but like any Ohio State QB other than Kyle McCord over the past probably two decades maybe are – they probably go score there, to be honest with you. But, you know, Michigan's defense all day long was just unbelievable. I know they made plays when they needed to make plays.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Let's go back to the beginning, too. How about Will Johnson's pick where he just completely jumped that route and should have scored, honestly? Yeah, he should have cut to the right. He cuts back left where all the guys are. It ends up working out, which, real quick, that play was amazing, and I'm sure we'll have a more in-depth conversation about the refs. How the hell did they not call Blake Corham's touchdown on third goal?
Starting point is 00:16:51 That ball was all the way across the goal line after that pick. Unbelievable. But not to get off track, but Will's play, I mean, you could see it. I can just see Tanner. Tanner's brain is just moving. The gears are fucking moving. It's like remembering plays. Like Alan from the fucking Hangover.
Starting point is 00:17:09 Just like math equations in my head. I'm not. I don't have any disabilities, I don't believe. Not that there's any. I think we've all got a little bit of something. Yeah. Almost nickname. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:22 It nicknamed. It nicknamed. But yeah, I mean, Will. yeah yeah it nicked me it nicked me um but yeah i mean will you know it will played really well um you know that's about what i would have asked for from him i mean that pick was worth seven right and hell it may have been worth 10 or 14 depending on what ohio state could have done with that drive so but that play for him to jump it unbelievable and. And he's just a stud, man. I hope he gets – it sounded like he's going to be okay, according to Sharon, because he came out late in the game. But just a monster performance from him.
Starting point is 00:17:52 They just played so well. They felt so prepared for that game, right? There was never really a moment where I was like, oh, they really got us on this trickery or something. I was just like, man. Well, we must – I mean, obviously we had their plays, Kalen. I mean, how would we not be right there? Wait, can I share this real quick?
Starting point is 00:18:10 When I was on the field, I saw the guys pushing the huge containers of cardboard signs, and I just looked at them. I was like, great job, guys. I appreciate you. They're pushing it towards the tunnel through all the people. It was unbelievable. Oh, shit. I agree with you, though, Kalen. like pushing it towards the tunnel through all the people it was unbelievable oh shit i agree with you though caitlin i mean it did feel like they didn't throw a punch that we weren't ready
Starting point is 00:18:31 for you know it was like they you know even the last two years there were a couple times where i was like oh shit they got us you know they got us on that one but then we were able to punch back yesterday i didn't feel like they ever got us honestly so no i felt like the rules were like reverse where they were playing from behind which is kind of like strange for them right and then they were also able to put so much pressure on mccord which forced those interceptions and turnovers so i mean defense just played out of this world i thought we led We led that whole game, right? We didn't trail one minute. Yeah. It was tied. It was tied.
Starting point is 00:19:07 Was it tied? Who would you guys say was the MVP of the game? Would you say it was tied at the beginning of the game? They do start 0-0. That's a good fact. Would you say James Turner was MVP or Will Johnson or Rod Moore? I mean, the game ceiling, Blake was huge. He didn't put up the raw numbers,
Starting point is 00:19:31 but that touchdown he had right after Zinter's injury was unbelievable. Shout out Trenta Jones. Thought he looked really good. I hate to see Zach go down. The crowd's reaction to Zach's injury was awesome, though. I mean, it was the let's go, Zach chants were so cool and um i will say real quick i heard i didn't see it but i had heard that uh ryan day went over and talked to zach's dinner's parents which i thought was really classy right i mean we can say what he wanted about a lot of the other stuff but i think deep down he's a somewhat
Starting point is 00:19:58 decent dude right outside of this yeah i don't think he's not a bad looking i think he's trying to put a good look out there for his next head coaching job or coordinator job, you know, whatever's next for him. Yeah. Maybe like USFL head coaching job possibly. Michigan Panthers, baby. He could be the next – your next Michigan Panthers head coach, Ryan Day. Yeah, no.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I mean, even like going back to the beginning of the game, too, like, it felt like, you know, the first two drives for each team was a punt, right? Like, so I don't know about you guys, but I was like, it was like three and out, three and out, three and out. And, like, you know, it felt like I was like, holy shit, is this going to be a three-nothing game or something? And it did feel like whoever was going to make a play like that
Starting point is 00:20:50 was going to then take it away, and that's what Will Johnson did. He broke the tie, broke the stalemate in the beginning, and all of a sudden it's Michigan on top-0, that gave the crowd the juice. Then we go down and hold Ohio State to a field goal, which I believe I said that on the podcast about the last two years as well. The ability for Michigan's defense to not let Ohio State score a touchdown on every drive when they're in the red zone, that's been
Starting point is 00:21:25 the difference in winning these football games the past three years and they did it once again and you know and then I everyone was worried about Jake Moody leaving and I was too and my dad gave him a hug on the sideline and said my son's Justin Rowe he loves loves you. After the game, because Moody was on the field after the game. That's amazing. But, you know, James Turner, I mean, those are clutch field goals in a tough environment, man. Like, I mean, that is a tough spot for a guy that has only been in Ann Arbor for, you know, eight months, right?
Starting point is 00:22:00 Like something like that. So shout out to James Turner because, you know, Michigan doesn't win this game without those three field goals from him. Yeah. And he hit a 50 yard or two. Was that the longest one he hit of the day? Drilled it. 12 points for him on the topic of field goals to Sherone Moore called that time out, which led to a missed field goal. Cause he made it right after the timeout, he made the practice attempt and then he pushed it left. He hooked it.
Starting point is 00:22:27 But also, I think – I mean, it's unbelievable to think about Sharone and how he went and out-coached Ryan Day in his, what, fourth head coaching game ever as a head coach, I should say. And he's the guy going forward on fourth down. He's the guy letting it all hang out. And then Ryan Day is like, well, we'll just let this run down and take this 50-yarder and miss it. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Seriously, it did feel – it did not – okay, I thought that in the Penn State game and at times in the Maryland game, I was like, okay, Sharone's inexperience at times is showing, right? There are times where it's like, okay, maybe he's not quite ready for that head coaching gig just yet. But then yesterday, there was never a moment where I was like, oh my God, the lights are too bright for him. He felt in control of that game all day long.
Starting point is 00:23:19 And it was Dan Campbell-esque when he's going for it on fourth down. There were three for three on fourth downs. I love that. You know, I felt like there was never a moment where it was like, oh, shit, he made the wrong decision there or he's letting this slip. Like, I felt like he was in control. You know, him and Jim Harbaugh must absolutely love each other because the way that they both will get a lead
Starting point is 00:23:43 and just milk the shit out of the clock is unbelievable. They will just milk that. I mean, you know, I know they left a minute or whatever minute and change on the, on the board for Ohio state in that last drive, but he, I mean, he milked that down from, I think six minutes, I believe something like that, um like that, to get it down. And, you know, that's what Michigan does. That's the boa constrictor of you, right? They just squeeze the life out of you. Yeah, eight-minute drive or whatever towards the end of the game.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Like, you love to see that. I've got something to say on that drive because, Mr. We've got a tough team. Yelling at 86-year-old Lou Holtz who's probably drooling somewhere. Eight minutes left in the game, right? I think it was right at eight minutes. Did Michigan
Starting point is 00:24:34 pass on that drive? I don't have it in front of me. They had the CJ catch across the middle, which was an amazing play to set up third and one. Holy shit. The first play was a catch was a catch was a pass
Starting point is 00:24:48 to Cornelius and then the third play was a pass to Cornelius. Cornelius had three catches on that drive actually. Wow. Other than that, we ran it with Blake pretty much every time. That's the thing. You have eight minutes left. You're down three points. What does
Starting point is 00:25:04 Michigan do? Michigan makes you look like Rutgers at the end of the game where they ran it to kill seven minutes o'clock. That's exactly what they did. And to your point about the boa constrictor, that's exactly what they are. And so Michigan just proved again that they are the tougher team. They have the better play in the line of scrimmage and in the trenches. And they just went out there. They kicked Ohio State's ass on that drive to get a field goal
Starting point is 00:25:27 and then make them have no timeouts left and have a minute to drive the whole field. I love it. And the one thing I'll say about that, I mean, obviously, I want to give a shout-out first and foremost to Cornelius Johnson because he's not the flashiest guy out there. He's not Roman Wilson. He's not Marvin Harrison Jr., but he's absolutely Mr flashiest guy out there. He does. He's not Roman Wilson. He's not Marvin Harrison
Starting point is 00:25:45 jr, but he's absolutely Mr. Reliable. He is a guy that is there for JJ McCarthy every time he needs them and catches the ball nearly every time. And that one catch where he like, it was like behind him sprawled out. It was tough to see. Cause it was on our sideline, the sideline that I was on. But, like, unbelievable catch for him and bailing J.J. out at times, honestly. And then also the run blocking. Name another wide receiver that puts out highlights of him run blocking out there. Hasn't put out highlights of him catching any passes at all, but put highlights out there.
Starting point is 00:26:23 So, love Cornnelius for that and then i mean to your point tanner like this is where the sign stealing thing is bullshit in my opinion because other than those three passes we ran it with blake fucking quorum every single time you know that we're gonna do that you everybody in the world knows that we're going to do that. And you still can't stop it. You cannot stop it. And this is Ohio State's best defense in a decade. They have stopped the run all year long.
Starting point is 00:26:56 They made it tough on Michigan earlier in the day. But when it comes down to when it matters the most, you still can't stop it. And that's without our probably first-round draft-picked guard in there. And so that's where I'm just like, none of it all matters. Michigan's just better than you. They're just better than you. That's it. It's plain and simple.
Starting point is 00:27:18 You're going to be fired up. I'm losing my voice all over again now. I can hear it. This is the third year in a row of that happening i think i've listened to us too before i joined on and uh the voice was always gone from justin so it's the annual the annual champagne popping and justin losing his voice that's for sure i mean by the way i've got my 2021 big 10 champ shirt on. You know, this shit's getting expensive. I got to get a new championship shirt every year. I mean, Jesus, I have to buy the tickets, got to get a hotel in Indy.
Starting point is 00:27:55 Yeah, we got to talk about Indy. Well, maybe we can talk off air, but we got to figure out, we do a little Airbnb action. We go down Friday, we go down Saturday morning. Airbnb might be a move. Yeah, we got to figure out you do a little airbnb action we go down friday we go down saturday morning yeah we gotta we gotta figure out some plans for sure i um i mean it's just you know this is getting hard i don't winning's tough guys this is tough guys i mean you know not everybody's built for it but you know luckily we are not a bill we're learning how to be built for it i mean let's talk about that for a quick second i mean all right so 2021 big 10 champs right i'm wearing the shirt
Starting point is 00:28:32 we win that game against ohio state we go and beat the shit out of iowa you know at that time i'll be honest i was like i'm going all in on this because I don't know if it'll ever happen again. You know, it was the first time in nearly two decades, right, that it happened. And to be sitting here now, two years later, where we have not lost a regular season game since then. It's been two 12-0 years. Soon to be, knock on wood, 13-0 back-to-back years. I mean, my God. This is such an unbelievable stretch.
Starting point is 00:29:12 I always go back to the Kevin Malone. Or no, not Kevin Malone. The Andy Bernard quote from The Office where he's like, I wish I knew we were in the good times when we're going through them. And this is it. This is it, fellas. This is it.
Starting point is 00:29:29 This is like, I mean, you just don't get runs like this very often, man. You really don't. It makes me thankful for the Adidas years. We had shitty years that we had to power through, and now we can enjoy. We're like, okay, we know this is probably the best of michigan football that we're ever going to see in our lives and that i mean this could be the fucking year they win a natty boys it just feels right holy shit i mean it felt it felt like that last year we were talking about natty but man this
Starting point is 00:29:57 team i mean they're just i think they're better than last year um because i again i like my point earlier i think ohio state's a better team than they were last year, you know, outside of Stroud not being there. So, you know, I think for Michigan, got to take care of business against Iowa. But, I mean, I know Georgia is Georgia, but, you know, they only won by eight against Georgia Tech last night. Georgia Tech team that lost to Bowling Green by two scores. Are we just going to become like a triple option offense for the next – they don't run it quite –
Starting point is 00:30:27 No, it's been a few years. They don't run it quite like they used to, but they still have, I think, a few plays in the playbook that they run like that. We still got to play the games that are ahead of us, right? So we still got to go play Iowa. I mean, I just wish that Cade McNamara was healthy there man get a little k versus jj there's gonna be a moment though right they have to like shake hands pre-game or something i feel
Starting point is 00:30:52 like and they're gonna be great about it there's no doubt in my mind like you know jj for sure is what he will you know go over the top to to be good i'm sure kate will be fine uh but there's definitely still a little salt in the wound for Cade and Eric Hall down there. It feels like, which is add some, some stuff, but you know,
Starting point is 00:31:12 Iowa, I don't think they've scored more than like 13 points in the last three games. So, and they got crushed by Ohio state too. Right. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:20 So, yeah, I mean, I'm not that I'm not worried at all, but, like, I'm pretty confident in our ability for that game. I don't think Iowa – honestly, I don't think Iowa's going to score, to be honest. Wait, no, they didn't play Penn State.
Starting point is 00:31:35 They played Penn State, got beat 31-0. Penn State, that's what it was. I want to throw it back to January 7th, 2021, I believe, and Bleacher Report had tweeted out Ohio State football liked our tweet, and it was Ohio State liking the tweet of Jim Harbaugh finalizing a five-year deal to stay at Michigan.
Starting point is 00:31:55 I want to say that Ohio State is now 0-3 since liking that tweet. That's all I wanted to say. Holy shit. And also, on that topic, Jim is back. Jim is back. That's all I wanted to say And also On that topic Jim is back That's a great call Jim is back and if Michigan does go on
Starting point is 00:32:12 And win Tony Petitti Has to hand that trophy To Jim Harbaugh next weekend You guys know the name That I've had for Tony Petitti in the group chat I will not say it here but you know the name that I had I may have said it in the stadium yesterday, too. People might hate me.
Starting point is 00:32:27 He was supposed to show up yesterday. He didn't. I just want to say, and I'm stealing this because this is – a hundred people have said this, so it's not super original. But I just would like to give my thoughts and prayers to Tony Petitti for the illness that he'll probably get on, like, Thursday, making him unable to make it to Indianapolis. Thoughts and prayers.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I hope he feels better by Sunday. I'm confident Sunday morning he'll be back and ready to go into the office. He'll have his weekly Zoom with Ryan Day. It'll be business as usual. Business as usual, for sure.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Yeah, man. What a day. What a run. I mean mean this is what a what a day what a run I mean this is just it's so much fun man and this one I don't know about you guys this one meant just a little bit more this one was truly that Michigan versus everybody like you know these guys have have taken that mantra to heart and I you know listen I know that a lot of people, if we were to tweet this, you know, they would say, well, you brought everything on yourself, right? I understand that that's part of the situation here. But for these players themselves to come together
Starting point is 00:33:41 and through all the noise over the past month. I mean, this all came out before the Michigan State game. That was, what, October 28th or something like that? It feels like a year ago. Seriously, that's a month ago, man. And all that they've been doing, the NCAA has been in their locker room. You know, everything, I mean, it's been insane. There was a new ESPN article every day for two weeks straight from Pete Thamel,
Starting point is 00:34:15 you know, which he shockingly has been very quiet, very quiet recently. I wonder what happened. I don't know. Something happened. He was in Ann Arbor. Did he not go to the game? I don't know. Maybe he just didn't want to watch. It was too much for him.
Starting point is 00:34:23 But, you know, honestly, just with everything going on, you know, for them to stay focused, stay the course, and win, you know, win these games, go on the road to Penn State and win the grittiest football game of all time, and then stay composed still through all of this. You know, you go and beat Maryland on the road in a tough one. That's a trap game for sure. And, you know, after everything, you've got Jerome Moore.
Starting point is 00:34:51 That is, you don't even have your head coach, man. And they still stuck together and went 12-0 and beat every, nobody, people were picking, nobody was picking them in that Penn State game because Jim Harbaugh was not on the sidelines and everything going on. Then nobody was picking them yesterday too. I think it was Tom Fornelli was the only guy on CBS that picked them. Everyone thought that without Jim Harbaugh, they couldn't do it. And they go out and they played an unbelievable game.
Starting point is 00:35:22 And just, again, the best part to me as like a big time, like football purist is it wasn't pretty. It was not pretty. It wasn't sexy. They don't give a shit. It wasn't like they need to throw bombs or whatever. They just win football games. And I, I mean, it's just so beautiful to watch these guys come together and do that for a third straight year and to know my team is tough as fuck, man. My team is tougher than yours, and I would gladly line my team up against anybody else's out there any day of the week. You know what's crazy is they didn't even play that good of a game, truthfully.
Starting point is 00:36:03 They left some stuff out there. You know what's crazy? I don't think there was one design run for J.J. McCarthy. He had to scramble, which was an amazing play because he cut it back in to get another 5-10 yards. They didn't use him in the run game. They brought
Starting point is 00:36:18 an orgy in the run game, which he had a great run. I missed it, dude. The bathroom lines were ridiculous. I left right at 20 minutes left in half. Should have wore a diaper. And then I come back. I know. Like, I come back, and I'm looking at the TV walking into my section,
Starting point is 00:36:36 and I see that there's like 13 minutes left in the quarter. I'm like, oh, shit. So then I come down. I'm looking to the right because that's where I expected them to be. I'm like, oh, they're at the 30-yard line. What happened? So I missed all that unfortunately. But yeah, I mean, Michigan came in.
Starting point is 00:36:53 I just, I'm so proud of this team, man. There's really nothing else to say. I mean, Justin said a lot of it. I just really proud to be a Michigan fan and be a part of the fan base and go out there and see Mr. Brightside get on the field, all that stuff, man. I think the offense is going to be even better with Jim back at head coach because now he's going to take some of that pressure off Sharon and he can kind of manage. Sharon can really focus in on
Starting point is 00:37:16 calling the plays. I think the offense will be even better. I think that says a lot about this team that if their offense gets better, you know, against like Iowa, against whoever the Pac-12 champ is probably going to be, who will end up playing. Yeah, I mean, I just this team is so good. What do we think the new rankings are going to look like on Tuesday? Georgia won Michigan. Michigan jumps to number one. No, even though Georgia looked terrible against Georgia Tech,
Starting point is 00:37:46 they still smoked Ole Miss. They beat a good Missouri team. They could still be number one. Michigan has better wins, though. That's what I'm saying. But I don't think they're going to. They're going to give them the benefit of the doubt and have them at number one.
Starting point is 00:38:01 And then Michigan two. What? Washington three. Oregon, Texas, Alabama. out and have them at number one and then michigan two uh what washington three oregon texas alabama are all up in there uh florida state still which i would hate to see them get screwed over because of an injury because if they went out they deserve to be in my opinion i agree i agree with that wholeheartedly you still went 12 and out you went 13 and out like i mean i that's where i'm like the committee is stupid because you know any bcs ranking or something like that would be like what do you mean they they just went undefeated and you're gonna leave them out like i don't know but i also think you know depth is
Starting point is 00:38:37 important depth that's why depth is important man not that you're gonna you know have another jordan travis as a backup but like you know you have to have a serviceable backup qb i mean let's actually give a nod to ohio state shockingly but that was how they won an addy back in you know 2014 or whatever it was three quarters three of them three quarters three of them yeah so um let me i want to go back to a couple things uh for the game. One, Tanner, you were talking about how we didn't play that well. I agree with you for sure, but we didn't make mistakes.
Starting point is 00:39:15 And that was the game plan. Agreed. That was the game plan. Again, it's not going to be sexy. We're not going to do too much, but we're not going to make mistakes. And J. And JJ McCarthy is, these are the least sexy stats of all time where you're throw for 148 yards and one TD, but you still go 16 for 20 and you're as efficient as humanly possible. It feels like,
Starting point is 00:39:39 uh, and zero INTs, which the guy across from you can't say the same about that, and that was the difference in the football game, right? That was the difference. How many rush yards for JJ? Let's see. He had 17. Four carries for 17 yards. He had that one long and really didn't –
Starting point is 00:39:59 He got stacked. He got stacked, yeah, a couple times. O-line held up reasonably well, though, right? Especially – I thought once Zinter went out – and Zinter's an amazing player, but I think Trentay at right tackle – and Barnhart's more of a natural guard, right? So it felt a little bit better, not because Zinter's the best offensive lineman that we've seen in Michigan in a very long time. So don't get that twisted.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Don't confuse my words here. But I think Barnhart's a more natural guard sliding him in, and then Trenta coming in. I just felt the O-line was better, and that's when they started to really just maul up front because Trenta is a great run blocker. So, you know, it sucks that Zinter is going to be out, but I have a lot of confidence in this O-line moving forward
Starting point is 00:40:42 because Barnhart's a better guard than tackle, and Trenta is a better tackle than Barnhart is. So it just is like it's not the end of the world. I'd love to have Zinter, man. But, you know, I think it's going to be okay with regards to that. So, you know, shout out to Trentay, man. He played his ass off. He's always ready.
Starting point is 00:40:58 He's always ready when his name's called, man. That's the best thing you can say about him. That's a guy that's a fifth-year senior, I believe, and has just waited and waited and waited for his opportunity. And every time that he's gone in because of an injury or something like that, he has stepped up to the plate. He really has. Has been willing to do anything.
Starting point is 00:41:19 Was wearing 93 a few times this year as an eligible tight end. He's been awesome. I can't say enough good things about Trent Day. One other thing that we didn't talk about, Colston Loveland, just balling out. Every time we needed a big play, he was the guy, and he made a couple really tough catches that were low to the ground. You know, I feel like he's you know
Starting point is 00:41:45 and then he came off in one when he I don't know if he broke his nose but he was bleeding everywhere like from the mouth or something but Barner came in as well and got a catch with that next play and then you know which I'm sure Sharon was like shit I want to run this to the tight end Colston's out oh shit I have AJ barner who's also six foot seven and is like an incredible tight end so the tight ends you know i just love how we scheme the tight ends man and both of those guys specifically colston had a really really good day and bready had a big block on blake's first touchdown right he's just a dog he He's a dog. I love Brady. And Max Bredesen is just one of those guys that, like,
Starting point is 00:42:30 he's just – he's the football guy through and through. And probably Jim Harbaugh's, like, favorite person alive. You know, which is funny because when we did the – you know, we did a recording with those guys that we can't release right now. But when we talked to Brady, he's like, yeah, I really don't care about football outside of my team and my brother, who plays for the Giants. He's like, I don't watch
Starting point is 00:42:49 football. And I'm like, that's a football guy. Honestly, that's a football guy. He's like, literally, outside of it, I just want to ram my head into other people as hard as I can. And outside of that, I really don't like the game. Honestly, I don't like it that much. Just a guy from, what, Wisconsin?
Starting point is 00:43:06 Just loves hitting people? Yeah. But he will let you know that he did not come from the Stags. He's a reasonably large town. But it's funny because he fits the Stags narrative. Yeah. He fits the Stags narrative for sure. Can we talk about the – so I was at a game, didn't hear Gus and Joel.
Starting point is 00:43:27 I heard that they were kind of one-sided in their excitement and their calling of the game towards the world-famous Ohio State Buckeyes. Why did Gus say that? He's from Michigan. I feel like he tries too hard to show that he's not biased. And it's like, who says the world-famous Ohio State Buckeyes? Nobody. I think I heard it was from like a Jesse Owens thing.
Starting point is 00:43:47 It is, yeah. So that's kind of badass. But also like, I don't know that anyone's ever said that about the football team. Fun fact too about Jesse Owens is there is a whole memorial on Ferry Field, which is Michigan's track to Jesse Owens, which I think is actually like one of the coolest unknown things about the rivalry that michigan's track is like almost nearly named after uh after an ohio state star because jesse owens was that good and he like obviously broke so many barriers
Starting point is 00:44:19 uh but uh yeah man i don't i didn't hear much of the broadcast. Obviously, I was in there screaming my absolute head off. Absolutely. It was amazing. Yeah. It was – I had to be, like, so annoying. I can't imagine watching one of those games and being – I can't imagine, like, paying, like, $500 or $1,000 for the ticket where I was and then, like, you get stuck next to me.
Starting point is 00:44:43 That would be so bad. I think we were all in. We were all in, though. Like, no one cared. Like, the people in front of me were like, I'm sorry if I'm loud and annoying. They're like, no, please keep it up. Like, we need to – you know, it's crazy. We didn't even cause any false starts or anything.
Starting point is 00:44:56 But, you know, I'm sure it was still hard to get plays in, communication. I could see, like, there was a couple times Henderson had to go up to the O-line and tell them what was going on that I noticed. They told him double Double timeouts too. Yeah. In the first half. Yeah. So,
Starting point is 00:45:07 um, I also, I don't, I don't know who these guys were, but I want to give a shout out to them. They were probably like six or seven rows above me. And every time we scored, I just raised up my fireball shooter,
Starting point is 00:45:20 look back at them. And they also had fireball shooters and we like cheers. And it was just, it was such a beautiful moment. I think we, we took one after every touchdown. And then when we, I had,
Starting point is 00:45:30 I guess four or five, I had more fireball yesterday. Like it would have killed a lesser man. It would have. That explains a lot for the mood you were in after the game. It was, it was the best ball has ever tasted to anyone in the history of mankind since it was invented in 1980 or whatever.
Starting point is 00:45:48 How many fireball shooter buckets do we have at the tailgate? Four or five? Four. Four, I believe, which was 20 a piece. Can we talk about Nolan's arrival, by the way, on one of those electric bicycles and in the basket
Starting point is 00:46:03 he just has fireball shooters it was like it was super it was like 7 15 in the morning at 21 degrees he's just rolling up with his mustache he's like what's up boys looking homeless as shit like he just puts the bike on like the curb where we have our tailgate and just sits it there and it was still there when i got back i guess nobody needed to use that bike. We had four of those fireball buckets, which I think has 20 apiece. And then we also had four. They're bigger than fifths.
Starting point is 00:46:34 I don't know. Whatever it is between a fifth and a half gallon. I think it was a 375. Liter? Milliliter. Yeah. And we went through. We had every.
Starting point is 00:46:43 We're empty. We're out by the end of the day like just an unbelievable performance by the i also had some of your dad's salty caramel uh that was good it was an old dog or something like that old smoky old smoky yeah there's like a dog on the bottle that was good like i'm not a big flavored whiskey guy typically like more just traditional bourbons that was fire i was i was smoking good yeah very sweet i mean again i there were we probably legitimately i don't know how many beers we went through because i have to still unpack my truck because i was absolutely not doing that when i got home yesterday but we went through an insane amount of blue by 90 beer and hail ipa yesterday um i just i love so much when people come up to us at the tail they're like how do i get the free beer and i'm
Starting point is 00:47:32 just like like just take it the cooler the cooler people are like do i have to like sign up for something do i have to like jump through a hoop for you? Do a handstand or something? I'm like, yeah, just go grab it, man. Just enjoy some Chris beer and let's go blue, baby. Just waking up this morning, I was just so excited to get up and go and look at all the troll posts on Twitter and whatever else. Just knowing that all those folks, especially led by the big nut, had to drive like four hours to Columbus, super sad, just made my day, maybe my year, guys. It just warms just my heart to know that they get to drive home and listen to their podcasters complain and listen to Columbus radio,
Starting point is 00:48:21 bitch and moan. I mean, it's just amazing. They have a full until there's not another meaningful football game played. So Championship Week, obviously, is this next Saturday. And then there's a break. And they get to sit at home and watch Michigan play this next weekend while we all go to Indy. And the best part, one of my favorite parts about the last three years
Starting point is 00:48:44 going to Indy is the Ohio State fans that that bought their tickets bought their hotels and everything because they were hoping that their team was going already and then they're just like well i have to i you know i have to use this i and then they go anyway to watch us go win a big 10 championship i think that's my favorite thing ever you know we, we, we suffered for like 20 years. So the shouting for right now is just like, love it. That's what, that's what I told one of the,
Starting point is 00:49:11 one of the younger kids, one of the sons of the guys that were the Ohio state fans that were there. So yesterday I was like, I was like, how old are you buddy? And he's like 13. And I'm like, yeah,
Starting point is 00:49:20 welcome to my life. You enjoy this. This was my entire adolescence, teenage years, young adult. Like, you can hold this for me, pal. Tanner's just loving and just ruining it. I mean, I was having fun with these guys. I mean, those guys were cool. The Ohio State fans that were at our tailgate were awesome.
Starting point is 00:49:40 I really – they were like those annoying guys that came up right away. I was – yes. Yeah, they were. They were looking to came up right away. I was – yes. Yeah, they were. They were looking to just like stir the pot, whatever. Yeah, I hope they had a great drive home too. Yeah, I hope they had a great fucking day walking out of that stadium, honestly. But outside of that, I mean, Ohio State fans were great all day in my opinion. And also, I want to give a shout out to the Michigan fan base.
Starting point is 00:50:03 That was by far the least amount of red in that stadium in the last 20 years. Legitimately, it was outside of their little section in the corner and then the upper row. It was very spare, few and far between of red. And in past years, even in 2021, you go back and look at pictures and it's 40% red. You know, so I loved it. Everything. I mean, it feels like the tide has like truly turned. Like we're to the point where it's now, you know, in 2021, it was like, all right, that was a fluke. They had one year, it was magic, you know, blah, blah, blah. And then in 2022, it was like five big plays. Right? And now in 2023, it's just like,
Starting point is 00:50:45 we're a better football program than you at this point. And there's absolutely nothing you can say to deny that, honestly. Yeah. Well, somebody tweeted when we were doing the pod, I was looking. But you remember what Ryan Day said? He's like, there's some things we found out about the last couple of years, and we'll talk about that when it's appropriate.'s not appropriate ryan you don't get to talk about it after you got your teeth kicked in again you don't get to talk about it it doesn't matter it
Starting point is 00:51:13 never mattered it has never mattered in the history of football dude like it has been going on there is i don't i think it's a john u bacon book but it's talking about alonzo stagg who was the football coach at chicago when when Chicago was a powerhouse before they disbanded sports, and Fielding Yost. And they were stealing signs in the 1900s. It's happened for the entirety of signs being in college football. Doesn't matter. Get better.
Starting point is 00:51:40 If your excuse for losing is a guy making $55,000 a year when your entire staff makes $20 million, you're not a good football coach. You're not a serious football coach. You're a joke of a program. That's my take on this whole thing. Joke. I love it.
Starting point is 00:51:55 I just got fired up there. Hold the L again. Fire yourself up, Tanner. I love it. I do a lot. In all seriousness, where does Ohio State go from here? You know, it's one of the most insane things ever that I believe he's 31-0. Ryan Day is 31-0 in the Big Ten over the past three years
Starting point is 00:52:18 except for three losses to Michigan. I, what other, what other coach in the history of coaching goes with a 950, 95% winning percentage, whatever it is, it is on the hot seat. Everyone's like you, we need, we need to fire him immediately. Like that has never happened ever, but it is a very, very real conversation that they have to have over the next month. And honestly, what I love too is they are not going to backdoor themselves into a college football playoff this year. There's no chance. No way. There's no way. There's too many teams.
Starting point is 00:52:55 I don't think you can. No. No, because you're – so it depends on conference championships, but if Texas wins, they've got to be above Ohio State. They've got a much better win than Ohio State does with Alabama. If Alabama wins and you have two 12-1 SEC schools, then it gets interesting, but I think both those teams potentially have better wins than Ohio State does. Obviously, Washington-Oregon is going to be interesting. Hell, I think if Oregon loses and is 11-2, I still think
Starting point is 00:53:20 they should be in the playoff over Ohio State, to be honest with you. Should they be penalized because they went to their conference championship game? Right. You know? No, that's always a big discussion. They would have lost twice to the same team. Well, if there were no divisions in the Big Ten, then Ohio State would play Michigan again and lose to Michigan again.
Starting point is 00:53:37 So it would be the same. That shit's a real possibility, right, next year. They could play three times in the future. So this is kind of the last of the era, right? Of like this game meaning everything because next year, oh, Michigan and Ohio State are 11 and 11 and 0. They're both going to make the 12
Starting point is 00:53:53 team playoff and potentially if it's divisionless, they're going to play in the same, you know, the conference championship and then maybe the playoffs. It's like kind of sucks, but so it feels nice to go out three in a row where these games are your season. It's kind of wild to think that next year it is technically possible that Oregon-Washington could be a Big Ten championship game.
Starting point is 00:54:17 I think Oregon-Washington, I think maybe they lose Pennix. They lose Dunzay. Still, it's a possibility. Yeah, no, I get that. Or USC, UCLA. Who knows? I don't know what the division is going to look like. There's no more Iowa getting there scoring 18 points a game.
Starting point is 00:54:32 There's no more free ride for the Big Ten West schools. You cannot. I mean, I will be very intrigued to see, like, what happens to all those Big Ten West schools. You know, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, those schools that are in the top tier of the Big Ten West but would be in the bottom five of nearly every conference outside of that one division. It'll be interesting.
Starting point is 00:55:00 I don't know, man. We're in a good fucking spot, man. I'd love to be us right now. I'd hate to be everyone else, and I'd love to be us because this team, you know, Jim Harbaugh is back. It's Michigan versus everybody. You know, like it feels like this is like destiny. It really does. You know, it feels like this team has like definitely
