All right, welcome in, rise to the victors on the Blue by 90 Network for those waiting live, watching live. I apologize for the delay. I had some tech issues here that hopefully do not resurface while we're doing the show. So we'll get right into it. I'm hardly the person to say anything insightful or overly thoughtful today, but it would feel weird to not completely acknowledge the fact, obviously, September 11th, 25th anniversary this year. I'm sure any of you that were alive when it happened and old enough to remember or going through the moments of memory and where you were and the feelings you had and etc.

So I've seen some very good coverage out there today. I recommend going and seeing it and the families and they're speaking. And, of course, the tragedy of the fact at this point, more people have passed away from 9-11 related illnesses than on that day. So a lot of information out there. Go find it again. I'm not the guy. I didn't want to not acknowledge the day at all.

So awful transition, but here we are. We're going to talk football. He plays Oklahoma on Saturday. This is week with the hangover. Absolute nonsense that has surrounded talking everything. So at a little bit Wednesday and Thursday now, there's a game Saturday. And, you know, the big question is Western Michigan

a mistake that the staff was able to correct or an unfortunate indication of progress this team needs to make. And they don't remember 11 Oklahoma coming into the big house. Where are you in terms of that? What Western told us, what are you expecting to see? answer. So, I'm a little bit of the opinion, and I'm glad we're having this show on Friday, and not Monday, because if you ask me that question on Monday, it'd be a totally different

answer. After watching the film back, watching some of the issues, I think I'm at the point that some of the former players who watched all 22, like Tehr-R-Wan was at, which was there was some glaring issues but not issues that is like oh we can't fix that up in a week right there was a lot of missed assignments i didn't think the play calling was all that great wicks spoke about it um those are things that are intermediate like you can fix those on the fly um okay yeah they are still saying you kind of glitching a little bit trail i know i'm to see if I can figure something out on my end. Go ahead. Keep going. So I'm kind of with you on,

I'm feeling optimistic. I wouldn't guarantee anything. But I'm feeling that we are going to see a much buttoned up team. I don't know if it was the first week jitters because I just saw another team that I root for play pretty bad last night, week one. So maybe it's just them first week jitters, but I think they've had a week to hear all of the criticism, hear all of the doubters, all of the naysayers. And I think this team wants to show everybody that they're not, Yes, last week was a one-off, and this week is consistently weekend and week out.

All right. You can hear me, right? Yep. Okay. What is that? Oh, what a day. Let's try this. All right.

Yeah, we'll try this. Keep me updated, guys, if I continue to seem like I'm glitching or whatever, but hopefully that helps. Yeah, I feel a lot better, and I don't know if it's just my natural tendency to go towards optimism. Again, I like expecting Michigan to do well and rooting for them to do well. I know that's not super popular anymore among some people, but I do tend to think, I hope I'm not falling into the same trap I did in 2024 with the Fresno game. I keep referencing that.

But I think there's just big differences. in terms of the talent on this team and the potential and the coaches and all the things that we believed in. You know, I've talked about the things I've heard in terms of what went wrong with the game plan, the execution. Again, the coaches I thought have been very candid this week, like admitting like even they were kind of got off guard. Lewis Powell was like, yeah, I messed up on rotation. I didn't rotate enough. You know, I think they had this expectation for the game. and then you had the first half and then that long drive,

then all of a sudden it's late in the fourth quarter, and they're like, I haven't done what I came here to do. Right? So I think coaches hold a burden, some responsibility players do as well. But like, that's not okay either, right? You shouldn't have been sleeping on your week one opponent. You should have needed a player only meeting.

You know, those things shouldn't have happened, but they did. And all they can do is answer it. And, you know, coming into this year, I was very optimistic Michigan could win this game because of all the things that looked like progress that we didn't see Saturday that I hope we see this Saturday. But obviously, you know, Michigan's a four and a half or a five and a half point dog where you look at it. I am not a big betting guy.

Like I follow it just for interesting levels. I'm not a betting person. But like the stuff around that has been interesting. But yeah, I think it's going to be low scoring. My prediction has been out there, but I'll save it for the end. I don't think there's going to be a blowout. Obviously, hope there isn't a blowout. But I think it's going to be physical because Michigan knows it needs to be physical.

Oklahoma can be physical. But it kind of starts and ends with Bryce, right? I don't know if he's going to be the reason they win. He can be. He can be the reason they lose, too. All the conversation about Winninghan's comments and his comments and all of that. But what is a good game for Bryce relative to, expectations, post-Western, pre-Western, and just this game in general.

Where do you come away going, okay, that was a good game we can build on that, Bryce Underwood? A Bryce Underwood, that does not turn the ball over. I think for him, if he can get through a game where he's not fumbling, it's not throwing picks. Clean sheet, protection of the ball. I would like to see him connect with some of those deeper throws. like I said on the all 22 when Bryce mechanics are on point

he throws about as pretty as a ball that you can see great football when they're off he looks like I don't even have a good record it's it's bad right feet not set throwing off his back foot

throwing dive into the right to the left it just looks bad so definitely taking care of the boss decision making has to be better he has to understand that while he wants to make the flashy plays like the mahomes or like the staffords or the josh allen's you're not there yet and you just need to throw the ball away and i'm pretty sure he's probably getting that with his meetings He's not along with with Koi and Beck, but I'm pretty sure he met with his other QV coach and I'm pretty sure Jordan Palmer's telling him the same thing. Like, hey, bro.

Just throw the ball away and just live to fight another down. Don't try to throw it down the field, up to sideline, and chunk it into the first row of the stadium. Right. So I think for him, he just, has to be a an improvement game would show that Bryce is a game manager, but has takeover tendencies.

I'm not expecting him to take over by far. It's going to have to be a team effort if they want to beat this Oklahoma. Right. But he's going to have to not turn the ball over. Yeah, I want to see, and it's not just him making the right decisions, but I want to see the offense set him up for success too. So I think with the weapons you have, you know, I brought up the fact his time to throw in the last game was over three seconds. You can't have that.

You can't have it. And I know like saying the difference between 2.5 and 3 seems like nothing, but it's massive because it's the difference between pressure getting home. And it's the difference between coverage adapting and being in your own head as a quarterback and overthinking the process, right? Like it needs to be a quick, instinctful one-two boom. his legs have to be a bigger factor, whether it's in the run game and keeping on a read, whether it's getting out of the pocket, I did see a comment already,

whether it's designed bootlegs or whatever, like get him on the pocket running where he has levels choices, get a defender in conflict, and if they come up on Bryce, easy throw. If they don't run, right? I think he's got to be more comfortable running it, and he's got to protect the football when he runs it too, right?

Obviously. but I'm with you. I think, like, stats-wise, if he's getting 200 total yards and a score, whether it's a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, whatever, and no picks, but he's keeping the offense on schedule. He's getting some first downs, and he's doing enough that hopefully the offensive line and Jordan Marshall and Savion Hider are able to have a good day. I think that's the game plan.

It is get back to running the football. let Jordan Marshall have a big day. Let's save on Heider, be a factor. What do we figure out? Was it five? Five carries, right? Yeah, it's got to have more than that. Yeah, it's got to happen.

And if the running game happens, then hopefully that means things become easier for Bryce, right? If you're making Bryce win the football game for you, Brett Menibals is going to win, right? Because he's really, really good at the things that Bryce is struggling with right now. That's not a crazy statement to make. We brought up last year, the 20 to 4 to 13 game. it was a lot closer than it felt because Michigan was the ones just shooting themselves on the foot over and over again.

So yeah, penalties got to get cleaned up too. But yeah, Bryce just needs to, I like that. Let's just go clean sheet. Be efficient. Show those better mechanics. Don't revert back when the pressure comes, right? But for me, it's running the football. And can Michigan actually do it?

And that seems like such a stupid question because the one thing Michigan has been able to do for a very long time with its best teams. whether it's not as great teams, against bad teams, against good teams, whatever, Michigan can run the football. I think this is why I continue to be confident. I don't think that went away. There's just no way in my mind that that's gone away with this offensive line, the coaches, and those running backs. So you talked a little bit about what? I wanted to bring this up because I wanted to get your thoughts on it. I wanted to surprise you to get you.

I need it's your raw emotion. I love that. So you know what last week kind of reminded me of? Wait, hell. Well, definitely hell. I mean, it reminded me hell and then I went into hell yesterday. Like, I left and then I went back in. But do you remember how people was like upset and freaked out,

2023 when JJ threw three picks against Bowling Green. Some of the same kind of criticisms like JJ can't read defenses. Who is he throwing them to? And I'm not comparing this team to the 2020-10 because I think that team is way above what we're talking about. But like, I'm just talking about the apathy of the fan base because they were unsure. And we won 31 to 6, but we were actually able to run the bar. all efficiently.

And I think somebody put in the comment was like, we were four or five blocked, one blocks away from like four or five explosives. And it could have been like the same similar type of game. So it kind of makes me revert back to that a little bit, I remember people was down on JJ. They was confused on why he had such a bad game, right? And then he bounced back further in the year.

But I'd be interested to see what Bryce looks like. It's interesting comp, though, because obviously the MAC team, but like, there's this awkwardness of the night game when the game doesn't match the moment, right? So, like, that night game against Bowling Green, they had, that was the first night with the flashing lights. and stuff when everybody scored a touchdown. Right? And it was like, and even the team, like how hyped up they were. It just, the night just felt weird because it's like, oh, it's a night game and we've

been waiting all day for it. And then it's Western. And then you get hit back and Western's meeting the moment. And you're not. And you're caught off guard and just, but, yeah. So I'll run it with running the ball. Jordan Marshall obviously has to be affected. but Jason Beck, one of those coaches that's been kind of honest about how the rhino package got out of control in a way that they used it way more than they intended to.

And obviously it wasn't having the outcome that it needed to. So we expect to see that less this week. I anticipated less guard rotation anyway. You know, I don't like getting into the weeds on injuries, so I'm not going to. But I did post about it. I think it sounds like a guard might be out on Saturday. So we should see a starting left guard and a starting right guard. But either way, is Jason Beck going to change his approach to what we expected, right?

We spent the whole offseason watching tape on this guy and what we thought it would look like. And I expect it to look like that Saturday. If it doesn't, like I said, then I'm going to go, whoa, what is going on? Like, why are you not what you were? Yeah, I believe that. they're going to have to, they can't, I don't want to say that they can't, because like somebody pointed in the comments,

it was one miss block away for like four or five explosives. So I think he's going to run rhino. But when a team is lining up eight in the box, you have to spread them out to get them out of it for you to be able to do your business, right? And so I would expect that probably goes to, like more 11, 12 personnel and mixes in the rhinos. I know that a lot of times they don't like to sub out because when you sub out,

you give, when you sub out, you give the defense time to sub end, right? And so if you keep the same person that's like there. That's more reason for Zach Marshall to be on the field than not Beagle, in my opinion. Well, yeah. And we did. That was something else that you kind of reported on. over at the site, there's a new name emerging for the rhino position, which I think may fit it a little bit better just because he's a natural offensive lineman. There's nothing against Beagle, but if you're going to have that rhino in pass protection, you best believe you needed to be an offensive lineman that feels good with pass says, especially if you're going to put the rhino against their best edge rusher, right?

It's crazy for you to ask Beagle to pass it to pass it against their best D.N. And you're not giving them any help. Right. Like that doesn't make any sense to me. So they need to get their playmakers on the field. Brett is going to give Bryce a crazy amount of pictures, I mean, pre-snap. He's going to have to decipher post-snap.

And I think the only way you can help a quarterback in this going up against this DC is you have to be able to run the ball. Unless you have a year three, year four guy who's just pretty good because he's seen a lot of stuff. Like Ty Simpson, when he went against Britt last year in the playoffs, he didn't really have. have a run game, but Ty Simpson is a baller and he had been there, been in college for four years, right? So it wasn't much brick or throw out of him that would confuse him a lot. Those quarterbacks tend to see to have a lot better games against a Brit Minibals defense than the younger freshman and true freshman and sophomore guys. It's just because they haven't seen enough defense. Like they haven't seen what it may look, like cover two pre-snap, but it's actually covered for post-snap or, you know, they haven't, or it's man, they haven't seen enough yet. Yeah, and I want to see, too, like I was excited for

Whittingham to say something about the East-West running versus North-South because it was so funny. I'm like, how many Michigan games have I watched from like, oh, my gosh, we're running it up the middle into a wall, up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, and in this game, I'm like, why isn't Jordan Marshall going Agap? Why isn't he going between the tackles? This is crazy. like why are you making this dude dance? It didn't make sense to me. So I think that'll be a big part of it too. So I think for me, Marshall has a big game rushing the ball in yards, touchdowns. We talked about Bryce a ton.

The other quarterback obviously is a huge deal. John Matere for Oklahoma. The defense was the most encouraging part of the week one game against Western Michigan. When I think about what Matera was able to do last year, I feel better about. about the defensive end group this year. I feel better about the linebackers. And then I think Smith Snowden and Chris Bracey are massive upgrades that can help out as well as far as trying to stop Matere from these extending plays. But he's going to get his, right?

I think we could see a very Minter-like game plan where Oklahoma's moving the ball and they're getting yards between the 20s. But they're not giving up the explosives and tightening down when it comes. but they obviously can't have 40 minutes on the field again. 40 minutes from Oklahoma is going to be a lot of points. That's a big difference between Oklahoma and Western, obviously. But do you think we're going to see sacks of John Mateer? Is there going to be turnovers? That was the one thing missing from the Michigan defense last week.

Can they turn the ball over and maybe get some short fields and limit possessions? Can Michigan keep Oklahoma under 30? That was always the number since 2021. The number's been 30. If the opponent scores less than 30, Michigan tends to win the games. If they score more than 30, those are the games they lost. You think about the Michigan State, the TCU. So that's always been the run.

Michigan offense score 30. The defense will keep it under 30. Can Michigan keep Oklahoma under 30 in this game? And the famous words of a rapper that I like, Codan Black. I hope so. um yeah yeah i hope so or or as uh denzil once said in the movie uh what was that flight nine 19 can't remember the title of the movie but he started to drink the water like yeah it was flight and he said god help me that's when i started watching the game where i'm would be drinking my

coffee and i will say god help me right um can they do it can this defense do it yes will they do it they're going to need some help from the offense because if the office is going to let them sit on the field for 40 minutes it's going to get ugly right but if the office can sustain drives and not go what was the what was the stat trouble they won one or two for whatever on third down like they couldn't extend drives if if you can't do those things, then it's going to set up a recipe for disaster and things are going to get ugly. And if you remember back when Texas came to the big house, that game started out pretty good. It was actually pretty first, I remember the first couple drives.

The crowd was rocking. Everybody was into it. And then Texas scored and it was like, here we go. And it went silent. So they got a tough task ahead of them, and they're going to need everybody, including special teams. Because we didn't even talk about special teams. The blunders we had on special teams cannot be muffin punts, can't get unnecessary penalties on special teams. Like, they have to play a complete game if they want to win this game.

Point blank, period. Yep. I think defensively, too, like somebody in the comments brought up, like, Mater is tough to sack. He is. I am personally a huge proponent of, I know sacks are drive killers, but for me, I care more about pressures. Because pressure, if you're getting consistent pressure, that leads to every quarterback, typically, very rarely do you have one that is. But every quarterback does worse under pressure than they do in a clean pocket. Pretty obvious, right?

Something last year that was so encouraging was John Mateer's numbers between clean versus pressure were terrible. Like he drops to like 50% or below completion rate, more turnover worthy plays than big plays. Obviously leads to interceptions as well. So I don't know how many sacks they can get potentially, but I hope they're getting pressure on 25, 30% of the snaps. I think that's going to be enough to potentially lead to turnovers because you can make Jom it to throw interceptions. man, he stepped up big last year. He just did. It's just a fact.

And he very easily could this year, too. But I think the noon game at Michigan versus the night game at Oklahoma is advantageous. I think the players you've added on defense, I think Jay Hill versus Wink and the bend don't break and not going all out on every third down and leaving stuff open. The map is there to be successful enough. And then to your point, the special team's got to come through and the offense. got to come through to have a complete game. So I've got a few more minutes. Who's an X factor for you?

It can't be Bryce. That's too obvious. It can't be mature. That's obvious. I mentioned Jordan Marshall. I feel like that's a pretty obvious one too. But is there a guy out there that you think at the end of this game if Michigan wins were like, that's the reason why?

Andrew Marshall. Really? Yes. Because of Andrew Marsh establishes him like that. J.J. Buchanan, to me, has already established himself. No matter how you feel about how the game ended, J.J.B. Buchanan, that catch will go down. People will be talking about that for years to come, right?

It's going to be on people's wall. I don't care that it was Western Michigan. I should probably put that right here somewhere. Yeah, I don't care to this Western Michigan. I don't care the opponent. It was still a phenomenal catch on a Hill, Mary. and if you look at that catch when it is framed and locked in, it's a hell of a catch. So if Marsh can revert back to the marsh that we saw that came on towards the end of the season and be just as consistent,

now you have consistent past catchers, and now defenses have to respect that. Until you have that, what you're going to have is you're going to have a defense come out, they're going to say, we got to stop J.J. Buchanan because J.J. Buchanan is that guy. The rest of the guys on the field are not proven enough for us to really care about, right? It's kind of the reverse of what you said Jesse Mentor did or Mike McDonald did. C.J. Stroud, it was like, C.J. Stroud can get his. We just got to stop the rest of the people from getting theirs, right? They had three wideouts that year.

JSN can get his. We just got to stop Olave or, uh, I forget that, Gary Wilson, forgetting he is. Like, if, when you start having multiple people going out, because we know what we're going to get from JJ Buchanan, we saw that last week. But if now, if Marsh comes to the party, he doesn't let the mental mistakes check him in the game, now we start to cook, right?

Now Bryce feels comfortable and he's like, okay, I don't have to force it all the way to Buchanan, because Marshall's like, I mean, not Marshall, the Marsh is locked in. So I think that they, I think Andrew Marsh to me is the big X. I think if he goes off this. No, that's actually a great shout. Well, and like I said, I hope, like it doesn't have to be anything crazy.

Let him make plays. Hit him on some short crossers. Like, let him get loose. We saw the four short throws on the drive last week, the first drive of the game, with most of the yards came from yards after catch. so what? Like that's what you're good at. Do it.

No, that's a good shout. I think for me it's defensively. I agree with you offense, but I'm torn between, I think Nichols is another obvious one. I think he's got to continue what he started week one and have a big day. I just talked about the pressures on material, et cetera.

But either, it's either Bracey or Snowden for me because they're the new guys that both of them can not only just be stout defenders, but they can be ball hawks and get an interception and then do something with it when they get the ball. And they're both also very, I never like, I'm not saying like they are Mike Sainer still or anything that he accomplished here, but like they're defensive backs that with their eyes in the backfield can make really good reads and come up and impact the run game and also hit a quarterback when they're getting loose and on the run too, right?

So I think I lean towards one of those two guys. either Bracey or Snowden, not just in coverage, but maybe getting a big turnover. And that being a factor, because I do think it's going to take a turnover probably to make up a little bit of a difference in terms of the two offenses. So that's probably where I leaned. But I've told you I already have a prediction in. I do have Michigan winning. I tried to probably talk myself out of it earlier in the week, but I'm sticking with it. I got Michigan 2420.

I think it's going to be a close game. I hope it's going to be, I mean, obviously, the scenario is Western was reality. And then you got another blowout in your hands. But the more I look at it and people I trust and, you know, whatever, I just, I think Michigan has a shot. And I was on them all year to win. So I don't want to flip after the one week. I'm going to go with Michigan 2420.

I think it'll be physical. And there will be a couple plays. that turn it, and it's either going to be Michigan side or Oklahoma. And obviously if it's penalties too, then another issue. But I think Bryce will do enough. I'm with you on the clean sheet. I think he'll do enough.

But I think the defense is stout and makes a big turnover play. And I think Jordan Marshall has, I don't want to say his biggest day because he's had some big days. But I think he has a big day. I've been wrestling with this for like the past two days. First day I was like, huh? Um, everything in my mind is telling me that this feels like how I felt going into 2021, uh, Ohio State. They didn't really have a chance. And then the Ohio State game happened and after the game,

I was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong. Um, I feel that way again. I feel like, uh, this is like a 20, let's call it 21-24 game Oklahoma. I don't think Oklahoma covers just because let me explain something to you about how this. I don't know how, I don't know if they have people that time travel. I don't know if they have people, you know, some people go with the conspiracy theory that they have people on the inside. I don't know.

But the fact that Vegas has taken 95. percent of the ticket money handle. And they have not moved the line to cut some of their liability. It's just been sitting there. It's gone the other way. It was six and a half. And now it's five and a half. Yeah, four and a half, five and a half.

To me, that's Vegas begging you to take Oklahoma, which means that either Vegas probably believes that this game, Vegas, I mean, that Oklahoma may win it, but they're not going to cover the number that they're putting out there. That's usually how this works, right?

And so I think it's going to be 21, 24 Oklahoma. But I hope I'm wrong. I don't think Michigan will lose because of something that Price does. I just think they are going up against a team that I think might end up at the end of the year having a top three defense. Now, what the offense looks like, I don't know. They got to stay healthy. Mater has to stay healthy.

But I think that's the type of game you're looking at. I think that the tear does turn the ball over and gives you a turnover. And that's how you're going to get seven of your 21 points. That's kind of how I feel, how I see it. Hopefully I'm wrong. And Michigan wins. And we're coming back doing the show on Monday laughing. And everybody in the comments will be laughing at me and say,

you had no faith. And I'm okay with taking that mantle on. We're predicting a similar game. You're just not ready to say Michigan's going to pull it out. But otherwise, pretty similar games, right? Yep. Yeah. Yeah, we'll see.

Obviously different than last week where we had to wait all day. That'll be first thing noon, Saturday. bright and early, get it ready. year. We knew Oklahoma was going to be a big deal. You know, we talked all offseason. No matter what hype or not hype, we were talking about. Everybody was like, let me see Oklahoma. Let me see Oklahoma. And then obviously last week has just accelerated that.
