One company so massive its name literally became the word for sewing machine. 90% of the US market, factories on four continents, a Manhattan skyscraper that was briefly the tallest building on earth, and then, poof, gone. Today, its 113-acre kingdom in Elizabeth, New Jersey, sits as a rusted skeleton of 48 crumbling buildings,
Starting point is 00:00:29 poisoned soil and wind howling through busted windows. Sounds like a disaster movie nobody bothered to film. How did a global empire turn into a toxic ghost town in less than 20 years? That is exactly what we are unpacking tonight. Starting point is 00:00:52 To understand how an empire that swallowed continents ended up as a brick skeleton on a Jersey shoreline. We have to rewind almost two centuries and travel to a place that does not show up on most modern road atlases. Pits Town, New York. October 27th, 1811. A modest farming village of muddy lanes, water-driven mills and chickens that took property rights extremely seriously.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Into this unremarkable patch of post-war America, a baby was born to a German immigrant mechanic and his Quaker wife. They named the boy Isaac Mery. Merit's singer, and absolutely nobody in that draughty little house could have predicted that the squalling red-faced bundle would, within his own lifetime, become one of the wealthiest and most scandalous men on earth. The America that Isaac was born into was a young, raw, half-finished country. The war of 1812 was about to start, an event that almost nobody in Pittstown would experience directly, and almost everybody would talk about endlessly anyway, the way small communities
Starting point is 00:01:52 talk about every distant catastrophe, as if it happened next door. The new nation had fewer than 8 million people scattered across a vast and largely unmapped continent. There were no railroads worth mentioning. There was no telegraph. The fastest message you could send was a man on a horse, and the horse naturally had its own opinions about how fast it intended to go. Most Americans lived on farms. Most farms produced just enough to keep the family alive through the winter, and not always that. is existed but felt distant, almost fictional, to the kind of village that Pitstown was. His father Adam was a tradesman from the German-speaking lands who had crossed the Atlantic chasing the American promise of steady work and a roof that did not leak too aggressively in
Starting point is 00:02:38 the spring. He was, by every account that survives, the sort of man who could fix anything with three tools, a length of wire, and a vocabulary that would make a sailor reach for the smelling salts. Mechanical instinct ran in his bones. His wife Ruth came from a quiet Quaker family, the kind of household where silence was considered a virtue, and shouting was treated as an actual medical emergency. The two of them could not have been a less compatible pair if a matchmaker had drafted them on purpose. Adam was loud, restless, sweaty, and Jewish. Ruth was reserved, devout, and constitutionally allergic to fuss. Naturally, they had eight children together, because that was simply what people did before electricity arrived, and gave couple

He had a habit of bursting into rooms with an announcement, even when there was nothing to announce. Friends and neighbors who remembered the household later described Isaac as a child who could not be contained by a doorway, a chair, or any reasonable expectation of indoor behaviour. He climbed things, he broke things. He gave dramatic speeches to the family goat, who, by all reports, listened patiently
Starting point is 00:04:06 and then went back to chewing whatever the goat was chewing. The Singer house itself was nothing to write home about, a modest plank and beam structure heated by a single stove that, in winter, was responsible for keeping 10 human beings, the family dog, and approximately 40,000 local mice from freezing solid. The windows were stuffed with rags when the wind got serious. The floorboards groaned when anyone walked across them. There was naturally. No plumbing, no electric light, no central heating, and no concept of personal space whatsoever. Eight children, two adults, one dog. Privacy was a theoretical idea, like the moon. that you could acknowledge but never actually visit. Bedtime meant piling onto straw mattresses
Starting point is 00:04:53 and shared sleeping lofts where everyone learned each other's snoring habits, whether they wanted to or not. Adam's workshop sat in a leaning shed behind the main house. It was the warmest building on the property in summer and the coldest in winter, a place that smelled of pine resin, machine oil, hot iron, and whatever cheese Adam had forgotten on the workbench three days ago. Isaac, almost from the moment he could walk, spent every spare minute in that shed. Not because anyone made him, not because he was particularly drawn to the work itself, but because the shed was the one place where his father, normally bone-tired and short on patients, would actually talk to him.

Isaac absorbed these lectures without realizing he was absorbing them. The lessons sank into him the way a song you hear on the radio every morning for 10 years sinks into you. In pieces you cannot consciously summon, but that surface decades later, exactly when you need them. When Isaac was around 10 years old, the careful balance of the household finally collapsed.
Starting point is 00:06:06 His parents divorced, which in 1820s America was not a casual thing. thing. Divorce in that era required a degree of social courage that most people simply did not possess. People stayed in awful marriages for decades because the alternative was being whispered about at the general store for the rest of their natural lives. But Adam and Ruth had clearly run out of compromise. Ruth left, taking some of the children with her. Adam stayed in the house with the rest, and within what felt like a very short interval, brought home a new wife. The new wife, by every surviving account was not exactly thrilled to inherit a small army of stepchildren who already had strong opinions about everything. The household became cold in a way that had
Starting point is 00:06:46 nothing to do with the weather. Isaac, who had always been the loudest, the most dramatic and the most likely to cause trouble at the dinner table, found himself in the crosshairs of his stepmother's patience management strategy on a near daily basis. There were chores, there were rebukes, there were the kind of long silences that in a small house could fill an entire afternoon. The cheerful chaos of his early childhood was replaced by something tense and brittle, and Isaac, who was approximately 12 years old by then, decided he had had quite enough. So he packed nothing, said goodbye to no one, and walked out the door. This was around 1823, when a 12-year-old running away from home in rural New York
Starting point is 00:07:26 meant taking his life into his own small, untrained hands. There were no telephones to call through. help, no police you would actually want to involve, no social services to swoop in with a hot meal and a kindly speech about going home. A child alone on the road in 1823 was, by every realistic definition, on his own. The roads were rutted dirt tracks. The carriages when they came were not exactly running on a fixed timetable, the weather did whatever it wanted, and the people you might meet range from genuinely helpful to genuinely dangerous, with no reliable way to tell the difference until it was too late. Isaac headed toward the nearest town that looked bigger than
Starting point is 00:08:03 Pitts Town, which honestly was not a very high bar to clear. He did odd jobs, he swept floors, he carried buckets, he shoveled coal, hauled firewood, ran errands, and slept wherever someone would tolerate him sleeping. The boy who had grown up in a house with eight siblings and a stove now slept in barns, in stables, in back rooms behind shops, sometimes just outside under a sky that had no opinion about him whatsoever. His meals consisted of whatever a sympathetic cook would slide across a counter for a copper penny, which usually meant bread that was one careful step away from being a brick,
Starting point is 00:08:38 and stew that had started life as one thing and become, through long simmering, something philosophical. He never went home, not at 13, not at 15, not at 20. By the time he might have considered returning, he had spent so many years on his own that the very concept of home had become a foreign object. Most 12-year-olds who ran away in that century either crawled back within a week
Starting point is 00:09:01 or died quietly somewhere nobody remembered to write down. Isaac did neither. He kept moving. What he had, instead of education, instead of family, instead of any kind of safety net, was an enormous personality. He was tall, even as a boy, and grew into a genuinely huge man, well over six feet, with broad shoulders and the kind of booming voice that could fill a room
Starting point is 00:09:27 before he had finished walking into it. He had thick dark hair, a thick beard later in life, and an enormous appetite for attention. He laughed loudly. He sang in the street for spare coins. He recited poems he had heard once and butchered three quarters of the lines, but did it with such confidence that nobody minded. He was in modern terms a born performer who had simply not yet found a stage. He found one eventually. of course. Sometime in his late teens, Isaac drifted into the world of itinerant theatre. In the 1820s and 1830s, travelling theatre in America was a wild, ramshackled, deeply unrespectable business. There were no permanent playhouses outside of the major cities.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Companies travelled by wagon from town to town, performing in barns, in halls above taverns, in barns again, in actual open fields when the weather cooperated. The actors did everything themselves. They built the sets. They sewed their own costumes. They printed their own handbills. They went into the local saloon and personally invited the drunks to come see Hamlet at 7 o'clock sharp. Pay was inconsistent at best. A successful week meant you could afford rent and three meals. A bad week meant sleeping under the wagon and eating whatever the company cook could persuade out of a sack of potatoes. Isaac loved it. He absolutely loved it. He had found his people, The shouting suited him, the exaggeration suited him, the makeup, the costumes, the wooden sword play,
Starting point is 00:10:54 the dramatic monologues hurled at the cheap seats. He could play kings and villains and ghosts and clowns, sometimes all in the same evening if the company was short. Shakespeare was the gold standard, of course. Every travelling company tried to do Hamlet and Macbeth and King Lear, even when they had only six actors, and three of them were busy holding up the back wall of the set. Isaac played the big roles whenever he could elbow his way into them, which was usually. He was loud enough to be heard from the back row of a hayloft, and confident enough not to care if half his lines were nonsense. Travelling actors in those years lived a life that modern people would find genuinely alarming. They slept in wagons. They washed in rivers when there were rivers, and skipped washing when they were not.
Starting point is 00:11:37 They argued constantly about which scenes belong to whom. They were occasionally chased out of towns by clergymen who considered, theatre a moral pollutant, which, to be fair, in some cases it absolutely was, they drank too much. They borrowed money from each other and never paid it back. They fell in love with each other approximately every six weeks, and fell out of love again approximately three weeks after that. They were, in short, exactly the sort of disreputable wandering tribe that any sensible parent would have warned a child to avoid.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Isaac, having no sensible parents available, Dovin head first and stayed for nearly two decades. For a brief, glorious moment in his twenties, it actually seemed like this was going to be his life. He even founded his own company at one point. He gathered up a dozen actors who were either too talented to stay where they were or too desperate to refuse, gave them a grand name and led them out onto the dusty highways of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. They called themselves the Merit Players, after his middle name, which Isaac thought was extremely clever, and which most of the actors were too polite to argue about. They toured for years, performing in every backwater that had a building large enough to hold an audience,
Starting point is 00:12:49 dragging their costumes and props behind them in a wagon that needed a new axle approximately every three months. It did not last. It could not last. The economics of travelling theatre in 19th century America were genuinely impossible. Most of your audience could barely afford the ticket. Half the towns you played in had never heard of you. The other half had heard of you but were not particularly interested. Rain cancelled performances. snow cancelled performances, a sick horse cancelled performances, the lead actress eloping with a sloankeeper in Indianapolis cancelled performances. By 1839, the merit players were no more. The wagon had been sold, the costumes had been pawned.
Starting point is 00:13:28 The actors had drifted off in different directions, some to other companies, some to entirely different careers, some, presumably, into the kind of obscurity that swallows people whole and never gives them back. Isaac, by this point, was approaching 30, broke, in debt to multiple people in multiple states, and saddled with a personal life that had become a kind of slow-motion catastrophe. Because here is the thing about Isaac Merritt Singer that you need to understand right up front. He had a complicated, ongoing, deeply chaotic relationship with the institution of marriage
Starting point is 00:14:00 and an even more complicated relationship with the institution of fidelity. He had married a 15-year-old girl named Catherine Haley when he himself was 19. They had a son, then a daughter, and Isaac, as soon as the bill started piling up in the theatre called louder than the cradle, drifted away to chase his stage dreams. He sent money occasionally, when he had any, which was not often. Catherine raised the children largely alone, which was its own grim adventure. Meanwhile, on the road, Isaac met a woman named Marianne's sponsor at a stop in Baltimore. They struck up what we might politely call an arrangement. Isaac told Mary Ann he was a widower, because that was easier than the truth, and because Isaac had a creative relationship
Starting point is 00:14:44 with the truth at the best of times. They began travelling together, they began having children together, they began, for all practical purposes, behaving like a second family while the first family stayed in New York wondering if Papa was ever coming back. By 1839 he had, depending on how generously you counted, between five and seven children spread across multiple towns. Two women who each believed they were the most important person in his life, and an net-werewomen work of debts that would have crushed a less buoyant man into the dirt. He was a failed actor, a failed husband, a failed company manager, and a failed father in just about every measurable way. His own children would not have recognised him on the street. His career had collapsed. His
Starting point is 00:15:27 talents, such as they were, had been polished into a glittering uselessness. He needed money. He needed it fast. And he turned, for the first time in his adult life, back to the one thing he had absorbed almost by accident from his father's workshop floor. Machines. Isaac was not, by any classical definition, an inventor. He had no training, no engineering background, no formal education in mechanics or mathematics. He could not have drawn a precise schematic
Starting point is 00:15:56 if you had put a kettle of hot tea next to his elbow and threatened to spill it. But he had grown up watching his father take broken things apart and put them back together better than they had been before, and somewhere along the way he had absorbed the basic logic of how levers, gears, cams and springs cooperated to get work done. He understood machines the way a musician who cannot read sheet music still understand songs, by feel, by ear, by the kind of intuition that years of casual exposure builds into your bones.
Starting point is 00:16:26 In the early 1840s between theatre seasons and failed business schemes, Isaac began tinkering. His first real invention was a mechanical excavator designed to dig canals, which he patented in 1839, the same year his theatre collapsed. He sold the rights for a respectable sum, and immediately, predictably, blew the entire amount funding another theatre company that also collapsed. Because Isaac's singer in his 30s was still, somewhere underneath the failing actor and the chaotic father, a man who believed his real future was on the stage. The mechanical excavator was supposed to be a stopgap, a way to fund the real dream. The fact that it actually worked, that it actually
Starting point is 00:17:07 sold, that it actually generated real money, was almost embarrassing to him. His next invention was a wooden metal-type carving device for the printing industry. It also worked. It also sold more modestly. He took the proceeds and moved to Boston in 1850, partly because Boston was a major centre for printing, and partly because everywhere else he had lived had become uncomfortable for reasons involving creditors, ex-business partners, and at least one extremely furious tavern owner. He set up in workshop owned by a machine repairman named Orson Phelps on the corner of Hanover Street in a building that smelled permanently of oil, hot metal and burned wood. Boston in 1850 was a city in the middle of becoming itself. The harbour was thick with masts. The streets were a tangle of cobblestone
Starting point is 00:17:55 and packed dirt that turned to mud the moment a cloud looked at it sideways. Horse-drawn omnibuses rattled along the wider avenues. Gas lamps had begun to appear on the better streets. The city was a magnet for inventors, machinists, printers, and the kind of restless men who could not sit still in smaller towns. Workshops crowded every alley. Industrial smoke rose from a hundred chimneys at once and stained the morning sky a permanent rust color by ten in the morning. It was loud, it was crowded, it was by the standards of the day, modern, and it was exactly the kind of environment in which a man like Isaac, with no formal training but a great deal of mechanical intuition, could quietly disappear into a back-alley workshop
Starting point is 00:18:37 and not be bothered by anyone who knew about his messy past. And this is where the story really begins. In the summer of 1850, a man walked into the shop carrying a sewing machine that had stopped working. The machine was Alero and Blodgett, one of several different sewing machine designs that were floating around the American market at the time. Sewing machines were not a brand new invention in 1850.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Several people had tried to build them over the previous half-century, with varying degrees of mechanical success, and absolutely no commercial success worth mentioning. Elias Howe had patented an important design in 1846. Lero and Blodgett had patented a different design shortly after. Alan Wilson was working on yet another. There were probably a dozen prototypes scattered across workshops in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, each one slightly worse than the last. The problem was that none of them actually worked very well.
Starting point is 00:19:32 They jammed, they snapped threads, they tore full. fabric. They required constant adjustment. They were, in the unanimous opinion of the actual seamstresses who tried them, more trouble than they were worth. Hand sewing was still faster, more reliable, and produced better results. The sewing machine in 1850 was a curiosity, an interesting idea that had not quite figured out how to be useful. It is worth pausing here to appreciate just how big a problem sewing was for the 19th century. Every shirt, every dress, every pair of trousers, every bedsheet, every curtain, every flag, every uniform, every flower sack, every saddle blanket in the country was sewn by hand. Every single stitch was placed by a human being. A shirt took 14 hours,
Starting point is 00:20:16 a simple cotton dress somewhere between six and 12 hours. A formal dress. The kind of wealthy woman wore once took dozens of hours spread over many days. Most of this work was done by women, often working by candlelight after their other duties were finished, often hunched over the cloth in postures that ruined their backs and their eyes by the time they were 40. The amount of human time the average household spent on sewing was, by modern reckoning, almost unimaginable. Anything that could speed it up would, in theory, free up an enormous chunk of the labour pool. The trouble was that nobody had actually managed to build a machine that did the job. They had all built machines that almost did the job, and almost, when it came

Starting point is 00:21:51 I didn't know you could get that big. Spider-Man, brand-new day. In theaters, July 31st. The Lero and Blodgett machine that came into Phelps' workshop that summer day was a perfect example of the genre. It used a circular shuttle that spun on a horizontal track. Theoretically, this allowed continuous sewing. In practice, the shuttle constantly twisted the thread into knots,
Starting point is 00:22:17 and the needle moved in a side-to-side motion that put enormous strain on the fabric. The owner had grown tired of fixing it himself and brought it in hoping someone with sharper eyes could diagnose the trouble. Phelps glanced at the machine, sighed in the way that only a workshop owner can sigh, and asked Isaac to take a look. Isaac was, at this point, a 38-year-old failed actor with no formal mechanical training, three partial families, debts in multiple states, and absolutely no business being trusted with an expensive customer's machine. But Phelps trusted him for reasons that history has never fully explained, and Isaac was bored, and so he took the machine. He stared at it for a while,
Starting point is 00:22:57 he took it apart, he put it back together, he took it apart again. He moved the shuttle by hand, then turn the handwheel, then watch the needle wobble back and forth on its sideways path. And somewhere in the middle of that long quiet afternoon in Boston, Isaac Singer had the single, most important realization of his entire life. The needle was wrong. It was moving in the wrong direction. The shuttle was wrong. It was spinning in the wrong plane. The fabric was being pulled along the wrong axis. The entire architecture of the machine was based on a misunderstanding of what stitching actually needed to do. Once you saw it, you could not unsee it.
Starting point is 00:23:35 The design was not slightly off. The design was philosophically backwards. If you flipped the needle vertical, so it moved straight up and down. If you laid the fabric flat on a horizontal table, so it could be guided in any direction by a human hand, if you put the shuttle underneath the table on its own straight track, so the upper thread and the lower thread could meet cleanly in the middle of the fabric. If you connected the whole thing to a foot-powered pedal underneath the table,
Starting point is 00:24:00 freeing both hands to guide the cloth. Then, then you would have a machine that actually worked, a machine that stitched fast, a machine that did not jam every six inches, a machine that could sit on a kitchen table and turn a six-hour task into a 15-minute one. He sat down on a wooden stool and started sketching on a scrap of paper, and according to the few accounts that survive,
Starting point is 00:24:21 he barely got up again for the next 11 days. 11 days. That is the figure that appears in every version of the story, even though the precise number has been polished by repetition into the kind of round mythological figure that historians distrust on principle. Eleven days of work in Phelps' Boston Workshop, with the door mostly closed and Isaac mostly inside it.
Starting point is 00:24:43 He ate when somebody handed him food. He slept when his body finally gave out, slumped over the workbench with a screwdriver still in his hand. He worked with whatever scraps of metal, wood and wire he could pull off the shelves. He hammered, he filed, He bent. He muttered to himself loudly enough that customers across the street allegedly complained, though Phelps, who had heard worse, was unbothered. The lamps burned through the night. The neighbours saw the light under the door at three in the morning, and quietly assumed somebody
Starting point is 00:25:13 was either drunk or possessed. $40. That was the budget Phelps loaned him to finish the prototype. $40 in $1850 was not nothing, but it was not a fortune either. It bought iron, steel, a few hours on a small turning lathe at a workshop down the street, lamp oil, paper, and the kind of decent thread you could use to actually test the machine without snapping it on every other stitch. Isaac stretched the money as far as he could stretch it, which was further than anyone expected. The actual work, day by day, was a brutal grind. He cut and shaped the iron frame by hand on a cold anvil, swearing softly whenever the hammer struck the wrong place. He filed the needlebar by candlelight until his fingertips were raw. He turned the wooden table legs on a
Starting point is 00:25:59 borrowed lathe, getting splinters in every finger and one truly memorable splinter in his left thumb that he later claimed required pliers to remove. He measured everything twice, because he could not afford to be wrong, and then measured it again anyway, because he did not entirely trust his own arithmetic. The shop cat, an indifferent grey creature who normally judged everyone with Imperial Calm, took to sitting on his sketches in the late afternoon, which Isaac chose to interpret as good luck, and which the cat chose to interpret as a free-heated paper bed. On the 11th day, by the account that Isaac himself loved to tell for the rest of his life,
Starting point is 00:26:38 he tightened the last screw, lowered the needle, threaded the bobbin, and stepped on the pedal. The first attempt failed. The thread broke. He adjusted the tension and tried again. The thread broke again. He stayed up through the night. made one final tiny adjustment to the upper thread guide, and tried once more in the grey hour
Starting point is 00:26:58 just before dawn. This time the needle plunged down, the shuttle slid across underneath, the threads locked, the foot pedal pumped smoothly, and a clean, steady line of stitches marched across a scrap of cotton with a sound like a small mechanical heartbeat. It worked. He had built, in 11 sleepless days, the first commercially viable sewing machine in the history of the world. Not the first sewing machine, not even the most patented sewing machine, but the first one that an ordinary human being could actually sit down at and use without weeping. The first one that would sew 900 stitches a minute reliably, where a skilled seamstress working by hand could manage about 40 stitches in the same span. The first one that did not require an engineering degree or a small adjustment every six
Starting point is 00:27:43 inches. The first one that you could put in a parlor, attached to a foot treadle, and used to finish a shirt before lunch. The leap from 40 stitches a minute to nine to 900 is the kind of jump that breaks human brains when you try to absorb it. It is not an improvement. It is a different category of thing entirely. Imagine a horse that suddenly, without explanation, could outrun a train. Imagine a candle that decided to give off as much light as the noon sun. That is the kind of multiplication we're talking about, 22 and a half times faster than a human hand. 22 and a half human seamstresses replaced by one wooden table with a treadle under it. Nobody who saw the machine working that first morning fully grasped what they were looking at.
Starting point is 00:28:27 They knew it was impressive. They did not yet know it was about to remake the global economy. Isaac did not exactly grasp it either. He grasped immediately that he had built something valuable. He grasped that this machine, if it could be manufactured cheaply enough, could potentially make him a great deal of money. Starting point is 00:55:59 Mary Eastwood believed, like the others before her, that Mr Matthews was an honest commercial gentleman with a steady business. interest somewhere across town that required him to be away most evenings. Starting point is 00:59:16 He shouted threats. The servants, listening on the back stairs, heard most of it. The neighbours, on the front street, heard the rest. Within 24 hours, the entire story was being whispered up and down Fifth Avenue. Within 48 hours it was in the morning papers. The press of the 1860s was, by any measure, less squeamish about personal scandal than the press of any later century. Editors did not pretend,
Starting point is 00:59:41 the way their 20th century successors sometimes pretended, that the private lives of public men were a private matter. The newspapers fell on the story like seagulls on a discarded sandwich. Within a week, the singer scandal was front-page news from Boston to Philadelphia. The sewing machine king, as the papers had been calling him for years, was suddenly the Sowing Machine King with multiple wives, an assault charge, and a household arrangement that the editorial cartoonist could not draw fast enough. Headlines competed for the most spectacular phrasing. The Sowing Machine King Scandal, the inventor and his household empire, the many wives
Starting point is 01:00:17 of Mr Singer. Some of the more inventive papers ran cartoons depicting Isaac with a needle in one hand and a marriage license in each of the other three. The story had everything. There were the children, multiple sets of them, blinking in the sudden public attention. There was Catherine, his actual first wife, who came forward to tell reporters that she had been quietly abandoned 20 years earlier and had never received the divorce she had repeatedly requested. There was Mary McGonagall who gave an interview in which she explained that the well-dressed Mr Matthews who had been visiting her household for years was apparently somebody else entirely. There was Mary Eastwood Walters in her small house, who only learned about the situation when a reporter knocked on her
Starting point is 01:00:58 door asking polite questions she could not answer. And there was Mary Ann herself, formerly pressing charges of assault against her supposed husband, and filing the kind of paperwork that even in 1862 New York took some serious courage to file. Isaac faced with this situation, did what Isaac had always done when a situation became too uncomfortable to manage. He ran. He had been visiting Europe occasionally over the previous decade on business, and during one of those visits, in 1860 or thereabouts, he had met a young French woman in Paris. Her name was Isabella Eugène Boier. She was 22 years old when he met her. She was the daughter of a French wine merchant. She was, by all surviving descriptions, strikingly beautiful, with the kind of dark eyes and elegant carriage that,
Starting point is 01:01:44 a few years later, would allegedly serve as a model for a particular green-robed copper statue, holding a torch in New York Harbour. The statue claim is probably a person. apocryphal, the kind of detail that gets repeated by tour guides because it sounds wonderful, but it has been repeated often enough to deserve mention. What is certainly true is that by 1862, Isaac had been quietly corresponding with Isabella for some time, and had apparently decided that, of the various women in his life, she was the one he most wanted to be with. He liquidated some assets. He transferred others to Clark, who handled the legal side of his life with admirable patience and the occasional, almost invisible,

He packed his trunks, and in 1863, with surprising speed and very little fanfare, he boarded a steamer to Europe, married Isabella in a small ceremony shortly after arrival, and effectively left American soil for the rest of his life. Behind him, in New York, he left a wreckage that were take years to clean up. Mary Ann eventually received a settlement, though the terms were widely considered insufficient given the circumstances. Catherine was finally, after 20 years, legally and formally divorced, which is the kind of vindication that does not entirely make up for the 20 years. Mary McGonagall and Mary Eastwood Walters faded back into private life, each with her own small share of a settlement that Clark, with infinite patience, had negotiated on Isaac's behalf. The press
Starting point is 01:03:52 tension dwindled. Other scandals appeared. The country was, in 1863, in the middle of a civil war, and even the most enthusiastic editorial cartoonist could not pretend that the personal life of a Boston-born inventor, compared, in importance, to what was happening at Gettysburg or in the burned blocks of Vicksburg. But the scandal left a permanent mark, both on the family and on the company. The children of all four American households spent the rest of their lives navigating the fact that they were tied to one of the most publicly disgraced men of their generation. Some of them, particularly those Isaac would soon have with Isabella in Europe, would marry into European nobility and rebuild the family name in places where the American press could not reach them.
Starting point is 01:04:35 Others stayed in America and spent the rest of their lives at varying distances from the spotlight, some embracing the family connection, others quietly changing their names and pretending the whole thing had never happened. Isaac himself, settling into his new life with Isabella, seemed unbothered by any of it. He bought a vast estate near Payton, on the south coast of England, an enormous Italianate mansion that he called the wigwam, which was either a joke or a sign of a slightly unhinged sense of humour, possibly both. He filled it with the kind of furniture that even European aristocrats considered excessive. The wigwam had more than a hundred rooms,
Starting point is 01:05:12 a private theatre in which Isaac could finally at last stage the Shakespeare productions of his youth without having to convince a paying audience to show up, and a ballroom large enough to host several dozen guests at once. He installed a complete kitchen staff. He installed gardeners, grooms, and a butler whose primary qualification, by every surviving account, was an apparently superhuman capacity to ignore unusual behaviour on the part of his employer. He threw parties. He invited the local English gentry, who came once out of curiosity, then a second time out of fascination, and then continued to come because the food was, against expectation, excellent, and the wine cellar was, against all reasonable expectation, exceptional.
Starting point is 01:05:56 He had more children with Isabella, six more, in fact, by the time he was finished. He took up gardening, which surprised everyone who knew him, including himself. He wrote letters back to America, mostly to Clark, full of complaints about English weather, English food, English politeness and English bureaucracy. He occasionally sent ideas for new sewing machine models, all of which Clark politely filed in a drawer without acting on. He died eventually in 1875, surrounded by enormous wealth, an enormous mansion and an enormous number of children
Starting point is 01:06:31 who could not all be assembled in the same room without significant logistical planning. By the time of his death, Isaac was the father of 24 children from five different women, a number that even the most permissive contemporary observers found genuinely difficult to process. His will, when it was opened, sparked litigation that lasted years. Different sets of children disputed different claims. European children fought with American children. American children fought with each other. The settlement, when it eventually came, distributed what remained of his personal fortune
Starting point is 01:07:03 in a way that satisfied nobody completely, and that gave the lawyers, including the patient and aging Edward Clark, more work than they had ever expected to handle in their declining years. The empire, however, was no longer Isaacs. It had stopped being Isaacs a decade earlier, when he sailed for Europe and effectively handed the day-to-day operation over to Clark. By the time Isaac died, the Singer manufacturing company was an enormous corporate entity in its own right, with factories on two continents, sales offices in dozens of cities, and a balance sheet that no longer depended on the personality of any single individual. The inventor had become, in his own lifetime, slightly irrelevant to the
Starting point is 01:07:45 institution his name still adorned. The lawyer had quietly, patiently, taken over, and the lawyer, having already designed the instalment plan, the showroom, the female demonstrator network, and the trade-in program, was now turning his attention to the next great problem facing the company. The existing manufacturing facilities scattered across small workshops in New York and Connecticut, were no longer adequate. Orders were arriving faster than machines could be built. New York real estate was becoming impossibly expensive. The workforce was scattered. The supply chains were chaotic. Something larger was needed. Something purpose built. Something so big that it would not need to be expanded again for at least a generation. The answer, when Clark finally settled on it,
Starting point is 01:08:33 would take him to the muddy edge of a New Jersey harbour town, and from there to the construction of the largest single sewing machine factory the world had ever seen. Clark had been thinking about the location problem for years before he finally moved on it. The existing manufacturing arrangement, scattered across cramped facilities in Lower Manhattan and a smaller plant in Connecticut, had reached the point where it actively interfered with the company's growth. Orders were stacking up, shipments were delayed, components were assembled in one building, finished in another, packed in a third and trucked between locations by horse-drawn wagons that moved at a speed best described as 19th century. The company had outgrown its own infrastructure in the way that a
Starting point is 01:09:15 particularly enthusiastic teenager outgrow shoes, and the consequences were beginning to show in the quarterly numbers. What he wanted, what he had been quietly sketching on the backs of contract papers for years, was something nobody in American industry had yet built. A single enormous facility that would house every step of sewing machine production under one set of roofs. Raw iron in one door finished crated machines out the other. No more horse-drawn shuttling between buildings, no more components arriving cold and bent from a foundry across the river. No more delays caused by a single supplier going on strike or a single warehouse catching fire. Everything in one place, on one site, under one management, with one set of railway tracks running through the
Starting point is 01:10:00 middle of it. It was an idea that had no proper name yet in the 1860s. The word people would later use for this kind of arrangement was vertical integration, but in 1869 the term had not been invented, and the concept itself was still half a generation ahead of where most American manufacturers were thinking. He needed a site. The site needed to satisfy a list of conditions so specific that it bordered on the comical. It had to be near deep water, because finished machines were going to be shipped to Europe and South America in enormous numbers, and Clark did not want to pay to haul them inland to a port. It had to be on a major railroad line, because raw materials came overland and finished crates needed to head west by rail to the rest of the country. It had to be close

It had to be large enough to expand into for the next several decades, because Clark did not intend to repeat this exercise in 20 years. It had to be flat because foundries and assembly halls did not like hills, and finally, ideally, it had to be in a neighbourhood with a substantial pool of cheap immigrant labour, because the kind of workforce required to staff a facility on this scale was not going to materialise from existing American towns by polite request. The site he eventually settled on, after several years of quiet inquiry, was a flat stretch of land at the eastern edge of a small New Jersey town called Elizabeth Port. The town sat on the western
Starting point is 01:11:25 shore of a tidal strait known as the Arthur Kill, which is a name that sounds vaguely menacing to modern ears, but actually comes from a Dutch phrase meaning the back channel. The strait connected directly to New York Harbour, and from there to the Open Atlantic, which solved the deep water requirement in a single stroke. The Central Railroad of New Jersey ran along the same stretch of shoreline, which solved the rail requirement. Manhattan was a 12-mile journey by ferry and carriage, easily walked into by a competent executive on a normal Tuesday morning, which solved the management oversight requirement.
Starting point is 01:12:00 The land itself was flat, marshy, partly drained, and partly covered with the kind of scrub vegetation that nobody had ever found a serious use for, and the surrounding towns were already filling up with newly arrived German, Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants, who would, given the chance, work for wages that no native-born American would consider acceptable. In other words, Elizabeth Port was perfect. It was perfect. It was perfect. in the way that a marshland chosen for a future industrial empire is perfect, which is to say that it was unremarkable in every respect except for the precise combination of features that made it commercially flawless.
Starting point is 01:12:36 The fact that nobody had ever built anything significant there before was from Clark's perspective an advantage. The land was cheap. The town was small enough not to make trouble about zoning. The water and rail access were already in place. All that was missing was the factory itself, and the factory was about to arrive. In 1871, Singer Manufacturing purchased 32 acres of waterfront land at Elizabethport.
Starting point is 01:13:01 The purchase was conducted through intermediaries, in part because Clark did not want speculators to drive up the price of adjacent parcels, which the company was already quietly planning to buy in subsequent transactions. The seller, a local New Jersey landowner, almost certainly did not realise what was about to happen on his former marshland. He had sold a quiet stretch of grass and reeds to what looked, on paper, like a mid-size American manufacturer. He had, in fact, sold the foundation of one of the largest single industrial facilities ever built on the east coast of the United States. Construction began the same year. The scale was, by every account, alarming. The first wave of construction included an enormous main assembly building, 300 feet long,
Starting point is 01:13:44 made of red brick with rows of arched windows tall enough to admit useful daylight on all but the gloomiest winter mornings. Next to it rose a foundry building, slightly smaller but considerably taller, with a 40-foot smoke stack that would soon be joined by half a dozen of its siblings. Beyond that, a separate forge building, where iron and steel were heated to extraordinary temperatures and beaten into the rough shapes that would later become precision components. A boilerhouse, a coal yard, a lumber yard, a paint shop, a packing facility, an administration building, and the early sketches of what would eventually become a private railway yard. The construction crews numbered in the hundreds. The shipments of brick arrived by barge day after day until the shoreline had been replaced by a
Starting point is 01:14:30 wall of stacked pallets that locals later described as resembling a small mountain range. The hammering began at dawn and continued until the light failed. The Elizabethport residents, who had been promised employment and prosperity in roughly equal measure, watched the construction with the kind of slow-stunned fascination that small American towns reserved for things they had not asked for and could not stop. The factory opened for production in 1872, less than a year after construction began. This was, by the standards of any era, an extraordinary pace. Modern construction projects of comparable scale routinely take five or six years to complete, with at least two of those years devoted to permits and another spent fighting with subcontractors.
Starting point is 01:15:16 Singer's Elizabeth Port facility, designed and built in roughly 11 months, came online almost the moment the paint on the assembly hall doors had dried. The first machines rolled out before the foundry was fully operational. The first shipping crates left the loading dock before the rail spur to the main line had been completely connected. The company was, in the language of a later century, running on momentum, building the airplane while flying it, and somehow, against all expectations, not crashing. What made the Elizabethport facility genuinely extraordinary was not its size, although the size was impressive by any measure.
Starting point is 01:15:52 What made it extraordinary was its complete operational autonomy. Clark had designed the facility to be entirely self-contained, capable of producing finished sewing machines from raw materials, without depending on any outside supplier for any essential function. The foundry on site could pour its own castings, The forge could shape its own components, the machine shop could turn its own precision parts, the paint shop could mix its own enamels, the wood shop occupying its own building near the lumberyard could plain, sand, and finish the wooden cabinets that housed the finished machines.
Starting point is 01:16:25 The packing facility had its own paper and box production line, churning out the shipping crates that the finished machines would travel in. There was even, by the late 1870s, a small printing operation on the property that produced the operating manuals, the instruction booklets and the small leaflets of advice that were tucked into every crate before it left the dock. The most extraordinary aspect of this self-sufficiency, the detail that genuinely separated Elizabeth Port from anything else being built in the United States at the time, was the power infrastructure. Most American factories in the 1870s and 1880s purchased their power, either from municipal utilities where those existed or from independent providers where they did not.
Starting point is 01:17:06 Singer chose to produce its own. The facility included a dedicated coal-fired electrical generating station, large enough to power not only the factory floor but also the surrounding offices, the workshops, the warehouses, and eventually a portion of the town itself. There was a separate gas plant that produced illuminating gas for the lamps that hung from the Assembly Hall ceilings on winter evenings. There was a coal yard large enough to store reserves for months at a time so that a strike at any single coal supplier would not bring
Starting point is 01:17:36 the factory to a halt, and there was, naturally, a small fleet of locomotive engines that pulled coal cars from the yard to the boiler house and finished products from the assembly hall to the loading dock, all on a private rail network that ran inside the facility and crossed no public roads. The numbers around the energy consumption alone were the kind of figures that make modern environmental engineers reach for a strong cup of tea. The factory burned, at its operational peak, roughly 450 tonnes of coal every week. 450 tonnes. To put that in perspective,
Starting point is 01:18:08 a modern household heating with coal in a cold climate might burn three or four tonnes over an entire winter. Singer was burning a hundred times that amount in a single week, 52 weeks a year for decade after decade. The smoke that rose from the Elizabethport Stacks was visible from across the Arthur Kill, from the deck of every ferry making the crossing to Staten Island, from the rooftops of houses in lower Manhattan when the wind blew in the right direction.
Starting point is 01:18:34 The factory was, in environmental terms, its own small weather system. Locals later remembered that on the worst days, depending on the wind, you could taste the coal in the air several miles inland. The river itself ran a faint copper colour downstream from the discharge pipes, a detail that nobody at the time considered particularly alarming because, in the language of the 1880s, that was simply what a successful industrial operation looked like. Inside the assembly buildings, the scale was equally hard to absorb.
Starting point is 01:19:03 The main floor of the primary assembly hall ran longer than two modern football fields end-to-end. Rows of work benches stretched into the distance, lit by gaslight in the morning and afternoon, and by the great arched windows during the middle hours of the day. Each worker stood or sat at a specific station, performing a specific narrowly defined task, before passing the partial machine onto the next station. machines move through the line on rolling carts and later on a series of mechanical conveyors that the engineers in the New Jersey Works developed in house. By the late 1880s, parts of the Singer Assembly line operated on principles that were astonishingly close to what Henry Ford
Starting point is 01:19:43 would later claim to have invented for his automobile factory at Highland Park in 1913. The historical irony, which is the kind of irony that history is unusually generous with, is that Ford's famous moving assembly line was preceded by at least three decades of similar workflow innovation at Elizabeth Port. The difference was that Ford had a publicist who knew how to use a newspaper, and Singer had an aging lawyer who preferred not to be quoted. The workforce that staffed all this was, by the mid-1880s, somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000 people on any given day. The numbers fluctuated depending on production demand, but the core force was enormous and remarkably diverse for its period. Germans worked alongside Irishmen, who worked alongside Italians, who worked
Starting point is 01:20:29 alongside Polish immigrants. There were small communities of Hungarian, Slovak's, Jews from Eastern Europe, and a smaller but significant presence of African American workers, particularly in the foundry, where the work was hot, dangerous, and considered by the racial standards of the era, suitable for labourers whom white employers paid less. Women worked in specific departments, mostly polishing and assembly of finer components, and were paid roughly half what the men received for comparable work. Children, until the labour reforms of the early 20th century, also worked in the facility, primarily as runners and as small-hand assemblers for tasks that adult hands found awkward. The atmosphere on the floor was loud, hot, oily and constant. The shifts ran 10 or 12 hours,
Starting point is 01:21:15 six days a week, with Sunday off because Sunday was, by long American tradition, reserved for the kind of activities that did not include manufacturing sewing machine bobbins. By the mid-1880s, the Elizabeth Port facility was producing 6,000 to 7,000 finished sewing machines every week, every week. To put that in slightly more comprehensible terms, the factory was finishing roughly one machine per minute, around the clock, year after year. The total output crossed a million machines per year by the late 1880s and continued to climb. The crates left the loading dock on barges that carried them across the arthur hill to deep-water shipping piers, and from there onto steamships that delivered them to ports across Europe, South America and Asia.
Starting point is 01:22:00 The crates also left by rail on freight cars destined for Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco, and every other significant American city. The crates left day after day in a stream that became so steady, so reliable, so utterly taken for granted that the locals stopped paying attention to it. The factory was simply permanently there. It was the largest employer in Elizabeth. It was the largest manufacturing facility in the state of New Jersey. It was, by any reasonable measure, the most important industrial site between Manhattan and Philadelphia. The town that grew up around the factory was, in many ways, the factory's domestic shadow. Whole neighborhoods of Elizabeth Port were constructed essentially to house singer workers. The company built, financed, or quietly subsidized,
Starting point is 01:22:48 of small wooden tenements and three-story brick buildings within walking distance of the gates. The neighbourhood developed its own taverns, its own grocers, its own bakeries, its own churches in roughly as many denominations as there were nationalities on the factory floor. There was a German Lutheran church on one corner and an Italian Catholic church four blocks away and a Polish Catholic church another six blocks beyond that. There was a Jewish synagogue that served the Eastern European workers and a smaller Orthodox congregation that served the immigrant population from the Balkans, the schools nearby filled with children
Starting point is 01:23:23 whose first language at home might be any of half a dozen, but whose teachers, in the firm tradition of late 19th century American education, addressed them all in English and expected them to keep up. The shops in the surrounding blocks displayed their wares and window signs written in multiple alphabets. The factory whistle, which sounded at the start of each shift and at the lunch break and at the end of the day, was audible in every kitchen for a mile around.
Starting point is 01:23:48 and the residents adjusted their domestic schedules to its rhythm in the same automatic way that earlier generations had adjusted to the bells of the local church. It was also, although nobody used the term yet, an industrial cathedral. The arched windows of the assembly hall, the towering smokestacks, the polished brass fittings on the main administrative building, the cast-iron columns inside the foundry, the precise geometric arrangement of the buildings around the central rail yard, all of it suggested a place that took its own works seriously in the same way that a medieval mason took his cathedral seriously.
Starting point is 01:24:23 The men and women who built the place understood that they were not just building a factory. They were building in iron and brick and coal smoke the physical infrastructure of an industrial empire. Sing as Elizabeth Port Works would, by the turn of the 20th century, become the largest sewing machine factory the world had ever seen. And then, almost immediately, it would not even be the largest sewing machine factory in the singing. a corporate family. Because while the Elizabeth Port Works were rising along the Arthur Hill, Clark and his successors were quietly building, on the other side of the Atlantic, an even more enormous facility on the banks of the River Clyde. The international expansion had actually begun earlier, in the late 1850s, when Singer first began shipping completed machines to Europe.
Starting point is 01:25:07 The European market had proven, almost from the first week, even more enthusiastic than the American one. British households in particular took to the social. machine with a fervour that surprised everyone, possibly because British weather kept people indoors a great deal of the year and gave them ample opportunity to sit at a treadle and stitch. By the mid-1860s, the volume of machines being shipped from New York to British ports had grown so large that the company began to consider the unavoidable conclusion. It would be cheaper, faster, and more efficient to build the machines on European soil than to keep crating them across the Atlantic. In 1867, Singer opened its first European factory, a relatively modest operation in Glasgow, Scotland.
Starting point is 01:25:50 The choice of Glasgow was not accidental. The city was, at the time, one of the great shipbuilding and engineering centres of the world, with an enormous pool of skilled mechanical workers, an established network of iron foundries and machine shops, and a deep-water port that could send finished products anywhere in the British Empire. The first Glasgow factory was, by Singer-standard's small. It employed a few hundred workers. It produced a few thousand machines a year. It was essentially a satellite, a way of testing the European waters before committing to anything larger. It did not stay small for long. Within 15 years, Glasgow was outgrowing its original premises in the same way that Manhattan had outgrown its earlier facilities a generation before. The decision was made to
Starting point is 01:26:35 build a new factory at Clyde Bank, a few miles down the river from central Glasgow, on a site even larger and more ambitious than the New Jersey works. Construction began in 1882 and continued in stages through the early 1880s. When the Clyde Bank facility opened for full operation in 1884, it was, by every measurable standard, the largest sewing machine factory the world had ever seen. The numbers for Clyde Bank were,
Starting point is 01:27:02 even by modern industrial standards, genuinely difficult to absorb. The main building covered approximately 1 million square feet of floor space, which is roughly equivalent to 14 modern American football fields placed side by side. The workforce. At its peak in the 1890s and early 1900s reached 7,000 people. The clock tower above the main entrance, 200 feet tall, contained a four-faced clock larger than the famous one on the Houses of Parliament in London,
Starting point is 01:27:30 a fact that Clyde Bank residents quietly enjoyed mentioning to visiting dignitaries from the south. The factory produced approximately 13,000 machines per week at its peak. which was roughly twice the output of the Elizabeth Port facility, and which made it, by a comfortable margin, the most productive single industrial site in Scotland. The town of Clyde Bank itself had not existed before the factory arrived. It grew up around the works the way medieval villages grew up around abbeys, with rows of company-built terrace houses,
Starting point is 01:28:00 company-supported schools, company-funded libraries and meeting halls, and the kind of settled, slightly dependent local economy that company towns produce in every era. The Clyde Bank workers were, like their American counterparts, a mix of locals and immigrants, although the mix was different. Most of the workforce was Scottish, drawn from the Glasgow suburbs and the rural districts of the Highlands.
Starting point is 01:28:24 A significant minority were Irish, many of whom had fled the Great Fam in a generation earlier and had been working in Glasgow industries ever since. There were smaller communities of English workers, Welsh workers, and a scattering of continental Europeans who had come for the wages and stayed for the community. The singer name became, in the west of Scotland, almost a kind of civic identity. To work at Singer was to belong to a recognisable industrial community. The clock tower could be seen from miles away. The factory whistle could be heard across half of Clyde Bank. The smoke from
Starting point is 01:28:57 the boiler stacks marked the horizon every working day from 1884 onward. Within 20 years of of opening, the Clyde Bank factory had supplied finished machines to every corner of the British Empire and most of continental Europe. India received machines by the tens of thousands. South Africa received them in huge, crated shipments that travelled by sea around the Cape. Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and the small but eager markets of the British Caribbean all received their share. The European mainland was supplied through ports in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Marseille. The whole apparatus moved with a steady, slightly hypnotic rhythm, year after year, decade after decade. The actual machines that rolled out of these factories were, by the standards of the late 19th

The standard family model, known by various numbers in different decades, but most famously as the Model 27, and later the Model 66, was a cast-iron tradle machine with a polished black enamel finish, decorated with intricate gold scroll work that varied slightly from year to year, depending on which designer in the Elizabethport Art Department, had been given the latest assignment. The decorations were applied by hand, by workers, usually women, who specialised in nothing else,
Starting point is 01:30:16 using small brushes and stencils and the kind of patient eye for detail that took years to develop. Each finished machine carried a serial number stamped into the base, allowing the company to track its production history, its shipment destination, and, in theory, its eventual repair history, although in practice machines were repaired so rarely that the tracking infrastructure was almost an unused luxury.
Starting point is 01:30:41 The wooden cabinets, produced at the on-site wood shop, were finished in walnut or oak and fitted with brass hinges and small drawers for thread spools, bobbins, needles, and the bewildering collection of small tools that any properly equipped sewing machine demanded. The cultural reception of these machines in different countries was, In retrospect, one of the more fascinating side effects of the global expansion. In India, the Singer machine became an essential piece of dowry furniture for marrying daughters of certain casts,
Starting point is 01:31:10 a status it would retain for more than a century. In rural Russia, the machine often took pride of place in the main living room, displayed under an embroidered cloth that was carefully removed only when the machine was actually in use. In sub-Saharan Africa, the treadle machine became, in some communities, the single most expensive object in the household, a financial asset that was sometimes passed down through three or four generations of women. In Latin America,
Starting point is 01:31:37 travelling singer agents reportedly developed a habit of arriving in small villages, demonstrating the machine in the central square, and leaving behind a backlog of orders that would take months to fulfil. The product itself, in each of these contexts, transcended its purely functional role. It became a symbol of modernity,
Starting point is 01:31:56 of household status, of female productivity, of the family's place in a changing economic order. Few consumer products of the period accomplished any of these things. Singer accomplished all of them simultaneously, on six continents, in dozens of cultural settings, without ever quite seeming to plan for the outcome. By the turn of the 20th century, Singer had moved its expansion further east. In 1902, the company opened a major factory in Podolsk, an industrial town just south of Moscow, in the Russian Empire. The Podolsk facility was designed and built along the same principles as Elizabeth Port and Clyde Bank,
Starting point is 01:32:33 with autonomous infrastructure, an internal rail network, on-site power generation, and a workforce drawn from the surrounding villages and immigrant communities. The Russian market had been promising for years, and the Podolsk works were intended to supply not only Russia itself but the rest of the Russian Empire, which at that point stretched from the Baltic to the Pacific. Within a few years of opening, Podolsk was turning out tens of thousands of machines annually, distributed through a network of regional sales offices
Starting point is 01:33:02 that reached into Siberia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Eastern Baltic provinces. There were, by 1910, other singer factories in Wittenberg, Germany, in Bonyer, France, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in Floridsdorf near Vienna, and in smaller assembly plants scattered across half a dozen other countries. The company had become, almost without anyone outside its boardroom, quite realizing what had happened, one of the first genuinely global manufacturing enterprises in human history.
Starting point is 01:33:32 There had been multinational trading companies before, of course, the East India Company being the most famous, but those had been merchant ventures, moving goods across borders rather than manufacturing them in dozens of locations. Singer was something different. Singer was a single corporate brand, producing essentially the same product in essentially the same way, on multiple continents, distributing through a unified global sales organization. It was the prototype for everything that the 20th century multinational corporation would later become. The sales organization was, in its own way, as remarkable as the manufacturing network. By 1913, Singer maintained a worldwide sales force of approximately 60,000 people.
Starting point is 01:34:16 That number included the showroom demonstrators, the regional sales managers, the traveling agents, the instalment plan collectors, the repair technicians, the warehouse staff and the various clerks and assistants who made the whole apparatus function. The company operated showrooms in essentially every significant city on earth that had a postal address and a paved road leading to it. There were singer showrooms in Nairobi and Lagos. There were singer showrooms in Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City and Havana. There were singer showrooms in Shanghai, Yokohama, Bombay and Cairo. There were singer showrooms in tiny European market towns whose names most modern Americans would struggle to pronounce. The signs over the showroom doors, the brass plaques in the offices, the labels on the crates and the brochures inside the crates,
Starting point is 01:35:01 all bore the same instantly recognisable singer logo type in a single typeface, in a single bright red, on a single distinctive shade of cream-coloured paper. The brand had become, several decades before anyone used the word brand in its modern sense, A globally recognisable visual identity. By 1913, Singer controlled approximately 90% of the American Home Sewing Machine market and a comparable share of the global market. The company had effectively monopolised one of the largest consumer product categories on earth. The competitors that remained, both domestic and international,
Starting point is 01:35:37 were either small regional manufacturers operating at the margins or specialty firms catering to industrial users who needed unusual machines that Singer chose not to bother with. The sewing machine, as a household object, had become essentially synonymous with the singer name in dozens of languages, in dozens of countries, in a way that very few products in the history of commerce have ever achieved before or since. It was, in retrospect, the absolute peak of the company's global dominance, and like all peaks, it was marked by the kind of architectural gesture that companies tend to make when they have more money than they know how to spend and more confidence than they can quite manage to contain.
Starting point is 01:36:18 The gesture in this case was the Singer Building, completed in 1908 at the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street in Lower Manhattan. The building was designed by the architect Ernest Flagg, who had been working on Singer projects for years and who had quietly been drafting and redrafting his vision of the headquarters tower for nearly a decade. The final design was, by the standards of 19th, 2008, something close to architectural science fiction.
Starting point is 01:36:44 The building rose 47 stories above the street, to a total height of 612 feet, from the sidewalk to the tip of the lantern on its crown. When it was completed and opened to the public, it was the tallest building in the world. This is, in modern terms, a difficult fact to internalize. The Singer building was the tallest building on the entire planet, not the tallest in New York, not the tallest in the United States, the tallest building anywhere, taller than every cathedral, every minaret, every previous office tower. Taller than the Eiffel Tower if you measured only the office floors, although the Eiffel Tower, being primarily an open lattice with a flag on top, was technically taller as a structure. The Singer Building held its title as tallest in the world for just over a year before being
Starting point is 01:37:31 overtaken in 1909 by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower, a few blocks up town, which was itself overtaken three years later by the Woolworth Building. The era of the tallest skyscraper changing hands every few years had just begun, and Singer was the company that fired the starting pistol. The building's exterior was an eccentric mix of styles that art historians later struggled to categorize. The lower stories were bow arts, with classical pilasters, ornamental cornices, and carved stone details.
Starting point is 01:38:01 The midsection was Renaissance revival, with rows of arched windows and decorative panels. The upper tower, where the building narrowed dramatically into its trademark slender spire, was something almost second empire, with a domed cap and a tall lantern that ended in a small spike. The whole composition looked, depending on the angle and the light, either like the most extravagant wedding cake ever assembled or like an enormous brass spinning top that had been balanced upright by an unusually patient. New Yorkers, both at the time and in later memory,
Starting point is 01:38:33 regarded it with the kind of affection reserved for the city's more confidently strange buildings. The interior was equally elaborate. The lobby featured marble columns, bronze elevator doors, mosaic floors, and ceilings painted with allegorical figures representing industry, commerce, and similarly weighty abstractions. The executive offices on the upper floors were panelled in dark mahogany and furnished with the kind of leather chairs that announced, without quite saying so, that the people sitting in them were not to be trifled with. The observation deck at the top, which the public could access for a small fee, offered views of New York Harbour, the New Jersey Shoreline, the rooftops of Brooklyn,
Starting point is 01:39:13 and on clear days the curving line of the Atlantic coast disappearing into the distance. Visitors came from all over the country, and increasingly from all over the world, simply to ride the elevators up to the top and stare out at the panorama. The Singer building was, briefly, one of the great tourist attractions of New York City, Engineering historians later admitted that the building had been built using techniques that genuinely pushed the limits of what was then considered structurally possible. The slender upper tower, which gave the building its distinctive silhouette, was supported by a steel frame so deeply embedded in the bedrock of Lower Manhattan
Starting point is 01:39:50 that the foundations alone had required two years of excavation work. The windload calculations had been done by hand by a team of engineers working at long wooden drafting tables in a borrowed warehouse, using slide rules and trigonometric tables and the kind of patient mathematical confidence that pre-computer engineering demanded. When the building was finally topped out in the spring of 1908, the construction crew held a small ceremony on the roof. Drank a toast in champagne flutes that had been hauled up 47 stories in a rope-pulled basket
Starting point is 01:40:23 and then climbed back down in a procession that took most of an hour. The newspapers naturally covered every detail, including the part about the champagne, which made for the kind of story that the morning editions could not resist running on the front page. The symbolism was unmistakable. A company that began with a frustrated actor hammering together a wooden prototype in a Boston backroom had, in less than 60 years, built the tallest building on earth and topped it with its own name in carved stone. The singer name was now visible from steamships entering New York Harbour. The singer name was carved into the bronze plaques inside the lobby. The singer name was etched into the windows of
Starting point is 01:41:02 every showroom from Argentina to Australia. The singer name was, by 1913, very nearly the most globally recognisable commercial brand in human history. What nobody in the executive offices on the upper floors quite understood, what they could not have understood from their views over the harbour, and their leather chairs and their bronze elevator doors, was that the empire had reached the absolute limits of its expansion. There was nowhere else to go. There were no markets left to conquer. There were no major industrial nations without a Singer factory or a Singer sales office. The world had been mapped, divided and saturated with sewing machines, and the company was about to discover that maintaining a global monopoly was an entirely different challenge from building
Starting point is 01:41:45 one in the first place. The first cracks would arrive within a year. They would arrive in the form of a war that nobody on either side of the Atlantic was quite ready for, and they would mark the beginning of a slow, decades-long process that would eventually transform the largest sewing machine empire in history into the ruined, rusted, weed-choked complex on the Arthur Kill that future visitors would struggle to recognise as a former cathedral of industry. But that part of the story is still to come, and it begins in the summer of 1914, when the first telegrams reached Elizabeth Port with news that the world had changed. The polished marble lobbies, the bronze elevator doors, the carved name above the cathedral facades,
Starting point is 01:42:26 the soft cream-coloured sales brochures arranged in fan patterns on showroom tables. All of it presented one image of the Singer Empire to the world. There was, behind that image, a second image, considerably less polished, that the company preferred not to mention in its annual reports. The second image lived inside the factory walls, on the actual production floor, where the actual machines were assembled by actual people, and it was not the kind of image that any sensible marketing department would have chosen to photograph. The conditions on the floor of any large industrial facility in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were, in the unanimous opinion
Starting point is 01:43:03 of every modern occupational safety inspector who has ever read the surviving records genuinely alarming. Singer's facilities, by the standards of the era, were neither dramatically better nor dramatically worse than the comparable operations at Westinghouse, Ford, Carnegie Steel, or any of the other industrial giants of the period, which is another way of saying that they were extremely difficult places to work, and that a generation of historians has had to use polite language to describe what was, by any modern measure, a fairly grim arrangement. A standard shift in the years between roughly 1880 and 1910 ran for 10 to 12 hours, six days a week. Sunday off, as a long-standing American and British tradition, was the only consistent rest day in the schedule.
Starting point is 01:43:50 The shifts began at six in the morning, sometimes earlier, depending on the department and the season. The factory whistle sounded across the surrounding neighbourhood. The workers rose in the dark dressed by the light of a kerosene lamp, or, in later decades, a single bare electric bulb. They ate whatever cold breakfast their household had managed to put together the night before, and they walked to the factory gates in the pre-dawn gloom, joining a slow stream of other workers doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same hour. They clocked in, removed their outdoor coats, hung them on numbered hooks, and took their places at their assigned workstations.
Starting point is 01:44:26 The whistle sounded again. The shift had begun. What followed was ten or twelve hours of work that, in modern terms, would qualify simultaneously as a physical fitness test, a sensory deprivation experiment, and a small low-stakes lottery, in which the possible prizes included a crushed finger, a chemical burn or a lung full of metal dust. The work was not gentle, the work was not glamorous, the work was not, by any reasonable definition,
Starting point is 01:44:53 the kind of thing that anybody chose to do for its own sake. The work was done because the alternative, in most cases, was no work at all, and no work meant no rent, no food, no firewood, and no medical attention if the children at home developed a cough. The most immediate sensory impression on the factory floor was the noise. There were no acoustic dampeners. There were no ear protection devices. No safety regulations requiring such devices.
Starting point is 01:45:20 No medical understanding that prolonged exposure to industrial noise caused permanent hearing damage. The sounds that filled the assembly halls were the combined output of hundreds of belt-driven mechanical tools running simultaneously. Lathes, drills, presses, grinders, polishers, riveters, and the long overhead shafts that connected them all to the central steam engine. Each individual machine contributed its own particular tone. The combined effect was a continuous howl that the human ear could neither distinguish into parts nor entirely tune out.
Starting point is 01:45:52 Workers who spent any significant time in the larger workshops emerged from their shifts with a persistent ringing that did not go away when they got home. Within a few years, most of them were partially deaf in the higher frequencies. within 10 or 15 years, most of them were fully death. This was so universally understood that older factory workers, particularly those in the foundry and the forge, developed a habit of lip reading and a particular leaning forward, ear-cocked posture
Starting point is 01:46:18 that doctors of the period referred to with no particular sympathy as the boiler-maker's stance. The second sensory impression was the dust. Every step of the production process generated some quantity of airborne particulate matter, and the particulates varied in size, weight and chemical composition, depending on which department a worker was assigned to. The foundry produced fine black soot from the coke fires,
Starting point is 01:46:44 mixed with a slightly grittier ash from the molten iron. The forge produced scale and oxide flakes from the heated metal. The grinding shop, where rough castings were smoothed before being passed to the assembly line, produced an absolutely continuous fog of metal dust so fine that it hung in the air for hours, and settled on every horizontal surface within reach. The polishing shop where the finished components received their final shine produced its own particular mix of fine metal particles, polishing compound residue and emery dust. The paint shop generated solvent vapors and pigment particles,
Starting point is 01:47:21 the wood shop generated sawdust by the cubic foot. Each of these atmospheres, individually, was probably manageable for a few hours. The cumulative effect on a 10-hour shift was that workers came home with their nostrils black, their eyebrows white with mineral residue, and their sleeves stiff with combinations of substances that no laundry of the period could fully remove. The medical consequences accumulated slowly. A worker in his early twenties might notice nothing more than an occasional cough and a tendency to clear his throat repeatedly in the evenings. By his early 30s, the cough had become persistent. By his late 30s he was struggling to climb stairs without resting. By his 40s, if he reached his 40s in good health at all, his lungs were so scarred
Starting point is 01:48:05 by accumulated industrial dust that the slightest respiratory infection could take a serious turn within a matter of weeks. The medical term for the condition was variously described as cydrosis, minor's lung, grinder's lung, or simply industrial lung, depending on which doctor was making the diagnosis and which particular dust had done most of the damage. Treatments, in the era before antibiotics were essentially limited to bed rest, warm broth, and the kind of folk remedies that doctors of the period prescribed when they had nothing else to offer. Life after the shift was, for most workers, only marginally more comfortable than the shift itself. A typical singer-worker, finishing his 10 or 12 hours at the factory in the early evening,
Starting point is 01:48:48 walked home through the surrounding streets. Arriving at a small rented apartment or a row house shared with several other families, The apartments were cramped. The plumbing, where it existed at all, was rudimentary. The water for washing was usually heated on a coal stove that doubled as the kitchen, the heating system, and the laundry facility. A worker who had spent 10 hours breathing iron dust would, in theory, want to wash thoroughly before sitting down to eat. In practice, washing thoroughly required either heating multiple kettles of water on the stove, which took an hour and consumed coal that the household could ill-afford, or going to a public bathhouse, which charged a small fee and required
Starting point is 01:49:27 walking another 20 minutes after a long day on his feet. Most workers compromised. A quick splash at the basin, a change of shirt, a hot supper, an hour with the family if the children were still awake, and then bed at roughly nine in the evening so that the whole cycle could begin again at five the next morning. The schedule was, by any modern measure, brutal. The schedule was also, in the language of the period simply what work meant. Then there were the accidents. A factory operating at the scale of Singer's major works produced statistically a continuous low background level of physical harm to the workforce, the way a busy highway produces a continuous low background level of dented bumpers. Most of the injuries were minor, a finger pinched in a belt, a foot
Starting point is 01:50:10 bruised by a dropped casting, a burn from a misaligned weld, a laceration from a poorly shielded grinding wheel. The factory infirmary, a small clinic staffed by a single doctor and a couple of nurses, handled dozens of these incidents every day, mostly by bandaging the worker and sending him back to his station. Time off the line cost money, and the assumption throughout the period was that minor injuries were the worker's own fault and the worker's own problem. The more serious accidents occurred less frequently, but with considerable regularity. The mechanical workshops with their belt-driven equipment running on overhead shafts were particularly hazardous. A worker who allowed his sleeve to brush against a moving belt could find himself instantly pulled into the machinery, with consequences
Starting point is 01:50:56 that the factory records of the period describe in clinical language that does not quite hide the underlying difficulty. The foundry was almost as dangerous, with molten iron, hot crucibles, and the occasional failure of a poorly maintained furnace. The shipping and loading areas had their own particular hazards, involving crushed limbs from improperly stacked crates and slipping on icy loading docks in winter. The total number of serious injuries across the major Singer facilities during the peak production years ran into the hundreds annually. The total number of fatalities in any given year was somewhere between five and 20 per major facility, depending on how the company chose to count and what the local newspapers chose to report.
Starting point is 01:51:38 Among the workers at the factory, until the labour reforms of the early 20th century gradually drove the practice out of American and European industry, were a substantial number of children. The use of child labour in 19th century industrial facilities is one of those historical realities that modern readers find genuinely difficult to absorb, partly because it sits uncomfortably with the carefully sanitised image of childhood that the late 20th century constructed, and partly because the actual scale of the practice, when laid out of the practice, when laid out in numbers is larger than most non-specialists realize. Children between the ages of roughly 10 and 14 worked in essentially every major industrial facility in the United States and Britain during
Starting point is 01:52:18 this period. The singer works were no exception. Children worked in the polishing departments, where their smaller fingers could reach into the tight spaces between machine components more easily than adult hands. They worked in the packing departments, folding paper, applying labels, and stuffing the small leaflets of instructions into completed shipping crates. They worked as runners, carrying tools, parts, lubricants and messages between departments at the kind of full-speed scampering pace that adult workers could not sustain. They worked in the foundry as Mulder's assistants, holding rods and cleaning the floor around the casting beds.
Starting point is 01:52:56 Their hourly wages were a small fraction of an adult workers' wage, sometimes a quarter, sometimes a fifth, sometimes less. Their shifts were the same length as the adults shifts. Their working conditions were the same as the adults' working conditions. The only meaningful difference was that they were children and that they should have been in school and that they were instead at a factory bench because their families needed every available pair of hands to bring home a wage.
Starting point is 01:53:23 The justification, when employers offered any justification at all, was that the children were learning a trade. This was, in a narrow technical sense true. A boy who spent six years working alongside his father in the assembly hall would, by the time he reached 18, be a competent machinist and would be able to draw an adult wage. The girls in the polishing shops learning the same skills as the women working beside them would graduate to adult work in their late teens. The system, viewed from the right angle, looked like a kind of informal industrial apprenticeship. Viewed from any other angle, it looked exactly like what it was, which was the systematic employment of children to do due to do. demanding work for inadequate wages, because the economy of the period had not yet found any
Starting point is 01:54:07 better way to organise itself. The wage structure at Singer, as at every comparable industrial employer of the period, was a carefully maintained hierarchy that reflected the social assumptions of the era, far more than it reflected the actual difficulty or productivity of the work being done. The highest paid workers were skilled native-born men, particularly machinists, toolmakers, and master mechanics, who could earn a respectable middle-class wage that supported a family in a modest house with a small garden behind it. Below them sat the semi-skilled workers, most of them also native-born but increasingly drawn from the children of recent immigrants, who earned roughly half what the master mechanics earned. Below them sat the unskilled adult male
Starting point is 01:54:49 workers, mostly first-generation immigrants from Italy, Poland, Ireland, and points further east, who earned roughly half again what the semi-skilled workers earned. Below them sat the women, regardless of skill level, who were paid roughly half what equivalent men were paid for equivalent work, and below them sat the children, who were paid the smallest fraction of all. The system was not a secret. It was not even particularly controversial. The pay differentials were posted in some departments on company bulletin boards.
Starting point is 01:55:20 The reasoning was, by the standards of the time, considered perfectly reasonable. Men were assumed to be supporting families. were assumed to be supplementing a husband's wage or saving for their own marriages and therefore not in need of a full living wage. Immigrants were assumed to be willing to work for less because they had come from countries where wages were lower and they should be grateful for whatever they got. Children were assumed to be subsidised by their parents and their wages were considered pocket money rather than primary household income. None of these assumptions held up to particularly close examination. A widow raising three children on a polishing shop wage was not,
Starting point is 01:55:57 in any meaningful sense, supplementing her husband's wage. An Italian foundry worker was not supporting a family in Italy on the difference between American wages and Sicilian wages, because in most cases his family had come with him to America and lived in a small rented apartment three streets from the factory, but the assumptions held up well enough to support the entire wage structure of late 19th century industry for several decades, including across the Singer Works.
Starting point is 01:56:24 Attempts by workers to organize, to bargain, to bargain collectively, or to challenge any aspect of the wage and working condition structure, were met with consistent and ruthless opposition from Singer management. This was, again, not unique to Singer. American and British industrial employers of the period treated union activity as something between a personal affront and an existential threat. Workers known or suspected of organising were dismissed without warning, blacklisted across the industry,
Starting point is 01:56:52 and in some cases discouraged by hired private security, whose methods were colourful enough that even the courts of the era occasionally took notice. The Pinkerton Agency, which provided this kind of service to many American industrial employers, was particularly active in the suppression of union activity at large manufacturing concerns throughout the 1880s and 1890s. Singer's specific approach to union suppression was relatively sophisticated by the standards of its competitors. The company maintained a dedicated department within its administrative offices, never publicly named but understood internally as the Labor Relations Office, whose job was to monitor union activity, identify potential troublemakers, and arrange for their
Starting point is 01:57:35 removal before they could organise anything substantial. The methods were not always heavy-handed. Sometimes a suspected organiser would simply be reassigned to a remote department, where his ability to influence others was minimal. Sometimes he would be offered a small promotion in exchange for keeping quiet. Sometimes he would be quietly informed that his employment was no longer needed and provided with a reference letter that, when shown to other potential employers, contained subtle codes indicating that the bearer was not to be hired. The codes varied from era to era and company to company, but they were widely understood among industrial employers and effectively functioned as a blacklist that no individual worker could see and no
Starting point is 01:58:16 individual worker could fight. The result of this systematic suppression was that, despite the genuinely difficult working conditions at Singer's major facilities, organised labour activity at the company was rare and almost always short-lived. Smaller incidents occurred periodically, isolated department-level disputes that flared up and died down within days. Larger incidents were almost unknown. The workforce, for the most part, swallowed its grievances and kept working, because the alternative was unemployment in an era when unemployment could destroy a family within weeks. This relative quiet, held throughout the 1880s, the 1890s and the first decade of the new century, and then, in March of
Starting point is 01:58:58 2011, at the enormous Clyde Bank facility in Scotland, the quiet ended. The trouble began, as factory troubles often began in that era, in a small department over a small grievance. The polishing shop at Clyde Bank employed roughly 400 women, working in long rows at individual workstations, polishing the cast iron and steel components that would later be assembled into finished sewing machines. The polishing work required precision, patience and a steady hand. The women in the department had been doing it for years, in some cases for more than a decade. They knew the work, they knew exactly how long each piece should take. They knew, with the kind of detailed personal knowledge that only experienced workers can have,
Starting point is 01:59:42 what was reasonable and what was not. The polishing shop had its own culture. separate from the rest of the factory. The women had nicknames for each other, for their tools, for the various components that passed through their hands. They had a rotating informal system for covering each other
Starting point is 01:59:58 when one of them needed a few minutes for a personal matter. They sang occasionally, in low harmonies, that the factory noise mostly drowned out, but that the women themselves could hear, faintly, just enough to keep their rhythm. They were, by any reasonable measure, a community within the larger factory.
Starting point is 02:00:15 They knew each other's children, they attended each other's weddings. They covered for each other when somebody's baby was sick at home and a sister or aunt was watching it. The shop, in human terms, was not just a workplace. It was a small society with its own internal customs and its own internal expectations of fair treatment. Starting point is 02:00:52 The increase was, in the calculations of the management modest. In the experience of the women actually doing the work, the increase was impossible without cutting corners on quality, which would later be blamed on the women themselves when the quality slipped. The women objected. The management replied that the objection would not be considered. The women objected again, this time more formal. through a deputation of senior workers who requested a meeting with the floor supervisor.
Starting point is 02:01:18 The meeting was held. The deputation made its case. The supervisor listened with no visible interest. The supervisor concluded the meeting by informing the deputation that the reorganisation would proceed as announced, and that any worker who was unwilling to meet the new productivity targets was free to seek employment elsewhere. The deputation returned to the polishing shop and reported the conversation to their colleagues. The colleagues considered the matter briefly. Then 12 of the most senior women in the department walked off the job in protest.
Starting point is 02:01:50 The management, predictably, responded by firing all 12 of them. What happened next was the kind of thing that the management could not have anticipated and that in retrospect demonstrated how badly they had misjudged the temper of their workforce. The firing of the 12 polishing women, instead of intimidating the rest of the department into submission, had the opposite effect.
Starting point is 02:02:12 Word spread through the factory at the kind of speed that gossip can only achieve in industrial workplaces, where workers from a dozen departments cross paths in shared corridors, lunch areas, and the long shuffling lines
Starting point is 02:02:23 at the factory gates at shift change. By the end of the day, every worker at Clyde Bank knew what had happened. By the next morning, the entire workforce was discussing what to do about it. What they did about it was,
Starting point is 02:02:36 by any measure, extraordinary. On the morning of the 20th, 21st of March, 1911, approximately 10,000 workers at the Clyde Bank factory walked off the job in solidarity with the 12-fired women. 10,000 workers, essentially the entire active workforce of the largest sewing machine factory on earth. The clock tower above the main entrance struck the morning hour, the whistle blew, and instead of moving to their workstations, the workers moved to the gates. They walked out into the streets of Clyde Bank in a single enormous wave. production at the factory stopped. The strike that followed was, by the contemporary standards of British industrial action, gigantic. The number of workers involved made it one of the largest single
Starting point is 02:03:20 labour actions in Scottish history up to that point. The visibility was immediate and unavoidable. Newspapers across Britain covered the action within days. Politicians began making careful statements. Trade union organisers, who had been making no progress at Clyde Bank for years, suddenly arrived in the town in considerable numbers, offering support, advice, and the kind of organisational expertise that the spontaneous striking workforce had not previously had access to. Among them was a young woman named Mary MacArthur, who had spent the previous decade organising women workers in the British textile and garment industries, and who recognised immediately what the singer-strike could become if it was handled correctly. Other figures who would later become important in the
Starting point is 02:04:03 British Labour movement also made their way to Clyde Bank in those weeks. although in March of 1911 they were simply factory workers and union organizers trying to figure out what to do next. The demands of the strikers were in the beginning modest, reinstatement of the 12 fired women, reversal of the polishing shop reorganisation, an acknowledgement from the management that workers had the right to be heard before unilateral changes to their working conditions were imposed. The demands grew over the days that followed as the strike continued and as the strikers became increasingly a of how much leverage they actually had. By the end of the first week, the demands had expanded to include broader changes to wage structures. Working hours and the company's overall approach to
Starting point is 02:04:49 its workforce, the management's response, after a few days of considering its options, was to refuse essentially all of the demands. The strike the management announced would not change company policy. The workforce was free to return to work on the previous terms or to seek employment elsewhere. The factory would, if necessary, recruit replacement workers from the surrounding region. The strike continued. The workers, who had no strike fund and no significant savings, began to feel the financial pressure within days. Local merchants extended credit. Local churches organized soup kitchens. Trade unions from across Britain sent contributions, although the contributions were modest. The strikers held meetings, marches, and outdoor rallies
Starting point is 02:05:33 in the cold March weather. They sang songs, they listened to speeches, they negotiated with the management through intermediaries, they walked picket lines around the factory gates, watching the smoke from the unlit boiler stack slowly disappear from the Clyde Bank skyline. The atmosphere in the surrounding town was, by every surviving account, electric. Clyde Bank itself was a small place, and the factory was the dominant institution within it. Almost every household in the town had at least one worker on strike. filled in the evenings with men trading news about the day's events. The kitchens filled with women who had not been at a kitchen table during the working hours for years. The strike was not just an industrial action. It was a temporary reorganisation of the entire civic life of the town. The strike lasted in its active form just over two weeks. It ended eventually in something close to a negotiated stalemate. The polishing shop reorganisation was modified, but not entirely reversed. Some of the 12 fired women were reinstated, but not all of them. The management agreed to consider future changes more carefully, but did not formally agree to any
Starting point is 02:07:02 specific consultation procedures. The workers returned to the factory in the last week of March. Production resumed. The smoke returned to the boiler stacks. To anyone reading the company's annual report, the entire incident might have appeared as a brief footnote in a year of otherwise normal operations. But the consequences of the strike, in the longer term, were considerably larger than the immediate settlement suggested. The Clyde Bank action of 1911 became, almost immediately, a reference point for the rapidly growing labour movement in the west of Scotland. The fact that 10,000 workers had walked out in solidarity over the firing of 12 colleagues, the fact that they had held the line for two weeks against the management of the world's
Starting point is 02:07:44 largest sewing machine factory, the fact that they had emerged from the strike with at least partial concessions and a vastly increased sense of their own collective power. All of this contributed to the building of what would later become one of the most significant working-class political movements in 20th century Britain. The movement acquired a name within a few years, Red Clydeside. The term referred originally to the river itself, the broad grey Clyde that ran through Glasgow and passed Clyde Bank, and out into the Firth of Clyde and the Atlantic beyond.
Starting point is 02:08:15 By the late 1910s and 1920s, the term had become political shorthand for the entire industrial working-class culture of the west of Scotland. with its strong unions, its socialist political leanings, its enthusiastic public meetings, its labour newspapers, and its consistent willingness to take industrial action when working conditions warranted it. The singer-strike of 1911 was, in the historiography of the movement, one of the early defining events. Later strikes, marches, and political campaigns through the First World War and into the post-war period would build directly on the precedent established by the polishing-shop walkout, and the 10,000 workers who had backed it.
Starting point is 02:08:56 The Singer management in the years that followed was forced to adjust some of its practices. Wage structures were modified slightly. Working conditions improved slightly. The use of children was gradually reduced, partly in response to changing labour laws, and partly in response to growing public attention to the practice. The Labor Relations Office continued to function, but more discreetly. Unions, although still resisted,
Starting point is 02:09:21 were no longer treated as quite the existential. threat they had once been. The company, in its own slow institutional way, was beginning to acknowledge that its workforce had a voice and that that voice could occasionally be loud. The American side of the company watched the Clyde Bank events with considerable attention. Memos circulated within the executive offices of the Singer building in Manhattan, discussing the lessons that might be drawn from the Scottish strike, and the precautions that might be taken to prevent similar incidents at Elizabeth Port, Bridgeport and the smaller American facilities. The precautions, as it turned out, mostly involved the same kinds of careful
Starting point is 02:09:57 surveillance and quiet dismissals that had been the standard practice for decades, applied with slightly more attention and slightly less heavy-handed enthusiasm. The American workforce fragmented across many ethnic communities and lacking the kind of geographic concentration that made Clyde Bank such a powerful organising environment was somewhat easier to manage. Strikes did occur at the American facilities over the following decade, but none of them ever reached the scale of the Scottish action, and most of them were settled within days rather than weeks. What nobody quite realized in 1911, neither the workers nor the management was that the era of Singer's confident industrial dominance was about to be tested by something far larger than any internal labour dispute.
Starting point is 02:10:42 The political and economic certainties that had supported the company's expansion for 60 years were, by the early 1910s, beginning to weaken in ways that were not yet obvious from the executive offices on Broadway. The European powers were arming themselves, alliances were tightening. The diplomatic system that had kept the great industrial nations at peace for nearly a century was creaking under stresses that would, within a few years, snap entirely. When the war came, it would arrive at the gates of every singeer factory on both sides of the Atlantic, and the company that had spent six decades selling sewing machines to civilian households was about to discover that its enormous industrial infrastructure could be repurposed,
Starting point is 02:11:24 almost overnight, into something rather different. The telegrams arrived at the Elizabethport offices in the first week of August 1914. They were short, urgent and entirely changed in tone from anything the company had received in the previous half-century of operation. The European war that had been theoretically possible for years that diplomats had been quietly warning about for months had become real. Germany had crossed into Belgium.
Starting point is 02:11:51 Britain and France were mobilising. Russia was already on the move. The European factories of the company, including the enormous Clyde Bank works and the substantial Pardolsk operation, were suddenly sitting inside the territory of countries that were either about to fight a major war or, in the case of Britain and Russia, already fighting one.
Starting point is 02:12:10 The senior management in New York read the news with the kind of expression that had not appeared on a singer-executive's face since the patent wars of the 1850s. There were emergency meetings. There were telegrams back and forth across the Atlantic. There were conferences with the company's lawyers, the company's bankers, and the company's longer-serving European managers. Within 10 days of the British Declaration of War on Germany, the broad outlines of a wartime strategy had been sketched out on the back of an envelope and approved by the board in the kind of executive decision-making process that modern corporate governance experts would consider with some justification completely insane.
Starting point is 02:12:50 The strategy was simple, take every government contract that any allied government was willing to offer, retool the existing factories as quickly as possible to produce whatever the military authorities needed, suspend civilian sewing machine production wherever the demand had collapsed anyway, which was rapidly becoming most of the European market, and ride the war wherever it went, knowing that government contracts paid promptly, paid well,
Starting point is 02:13:14 and required none of the messy consumer marketing that had occupied the company for the previous 60 years. The retooling began almost immediately. At Clyde Bank, the British Admiralty arrived within weeks with requirements for artillery shell casings, primarily the standard British 18-pounder field gun round, which was the workhorse projectile of the British Army's field artillery throughout the war. The shop floor, which had been turning out polished black sewing machine cabinets the previous month, now began turning out steel shell bodies machined to precise dimensions and ready to be filled with explosive at a separate munitions facility. The transition was, by every account, surprisingly smooth.
Starting point is 02:13:53 The machine tools, the lathes, the precision drills, the careful quality control procedures that had been developed for sewing machine production turned out to be almost ideally suited to artillery shell production. The same skilled workers who had been making bobbin cases on Friday were making fuse housings on Monday. The training period was, in many cases, less than a week. The decorative gold leaf was replaced by a uniform military gray. The cream-colored sales brochures that had occupied the printing shop for decades were replaced by parts manuals, technical drawings, and the kind of dense bureaucratic paperwork that government procurement officers required in triplicate. The government contracts were, in the language of a later era, a gold mine. The military authorities paid premium prices, paid promptly, and provided steady predictable volumes that the company could plan around for years at a time.
Starting point is 02:15:56 There were no instalment plans to manage. There were no travelling salesmen to support. There were no showrooms to maintain. There was no advertising to buy. The army wanted 10,000 shell casings by the end of the month. The army paid the agreed price, the army took delivery on the agreed date, and that was the entire commercial relationship. After 60 years of building one of the most sophisticated consumer marketing operations in human history,
Starting point is 02:16:21 the company suddenly found itself in a business arrangement of almost startling simplicity. Some of the older executives who had spent their entire careers managing the complexity of household sales allegedly admitted in private that they found the wartime business considerably more relaxing. The most visible change inside the factories, however, was not the products. It was the workforce. With millions of young men being drawn out of civilian employment and into the trenches of the Western Front, the existing male labour force at every major singer facility began to thin out within weeks of the war's beginning. The company, which had relied for decades on a workforce that was overwhelmingly male in most production departments, and entirely male in the skilled trades,
Starting point is 02:17:04 suddenly faced the problem of who was going to operate the lathes, the drills, the presses, and the assembly lines, now that a significant fraction of the workforce had been called up to fight. The answer was, women. Not in the polishing shops where women had always worked, and not as casual office help, where women had been employed in modest numbers for years. The answer was women on the production floor itself,
Starting point is 02:17:27 in every department, in every skilled trade, operating equipment that the company's own internal training materials had described, until very recently, as too complex for female workers to handle. The Clyde Bank Works absorbed thousands of women into positions that had been exclusively male the previous year. The Elizabeth Port Works did the same, starting in 1917. By the middle of the war, female workers represented a significant percentage of the production workforce at every major facility, and in some departments they represented an outright majority. What the women immediately demonstrated to the considerable surprise of the company management was that they could do the work perfectly well.
Starting point is 02:18:09 The notion that female workers were incapable of operating machine tools, which had been treated as a kind of natural law throughout the previous century of industrial production, evaporated within months of the first wave of wartime hiring. The women trained quickly, they learned the equipment, they met the production targets, they produced shell casings, gun parts, and assembled components at quality levels that the male workers had set as a baseline, and that the female workers, in many cases, exceeded.
Starting point is 02:18:37 The supervisors, who had been sceptical when the wartime hiring began, were left in the slightly awkward position of having to explain why exactly the company had not been employing women in these roles all along. The official answer, of course, was that the women were a temporary expedient. They were filling in for the absent men. They would be returning to their previous domestic situations, or to lower paid female coded work as soon as the war ended and the men came home. This narrative was repeated in management memos, in newspaper articles, in government propaganda,
Starting point is 02:19:08 and in the polite conversation of the period. The narrative was also, in retrospect, almost entirely wrong, but the wrongness would not become fully visible for several decades, and the immediate wartime priority was simply to keep the production lines running. The wartime production figures, when they were eventually tabulated after the conflict, were astonishing. The Clyde Bank facility, over the course of the four years of the European War, produced something like 350 million artillery shells, fuses and related munitions components. The Elizabeth Port facility, during its 18 months of active wartime production, produced tens of
Starting point is 02:19:46 millions of comparable items. The total contribution of Singer's industrial infrastructure to the Allied war effort was, by any reasonable measure, substantial. The company emerged from the conflict in November of 1918 with healthy profits, an expanded workforce, modernised equipment, and the kind of close-working relationship with Allied military procurement offices that would prove extremely useful when the next war arrived, which, as everyone now knows in retrospect, was sooner than anybody in 1918 wanted to admit. The interwar period, the 20 years between the November armistice of 1918, and the German invasion of Poland in September of 1939,
Starting point is 02:20:24 was a peculiar interval in Singer's corporate history. On the surface, things returned to normal. The shell-making lines were retooled back to sewing machine production. The women in most production departments were quietly let go and replaced by returning male veterans. The military contracts dwindled and disappeared. The company resumed its peacetime business model of selling household machines through showrooms to civilian customers on installment plans.
Starting point is 02:20:52 The annual reports returned to discussing global market. share, retail expansion and product line refinements rather than shell casing volumes and government delivery schedules. Underneath the surface, however, the company was facing a slower, less dramatic problem that nobody quite knew how to solve. The market for new household sewing machines was, by the 1920s, approaching saturation. The decades of explosive growth that had built the empire had been driven by selling machines to households that did not yet have them. By In 1925, the great majority of American and European households that wanted a sewing machine already owned one. The replacement market existed, but it was modest, because a well-maintained

The fundamental economic situation that had supported a workforce of tens of thousands and a global network of 60,000 salespeople was beginning, very gradually, to shift. The company responded with a combination of new product lines and aggressive marketing. Electric sewing machines, which began to appear in the late 1880s but only became commercially significant in the 1920s, offered a reason for existing customers to upgrade. Specialised industrial machines for clothing manufacturers, a leather goods producers and the
Starting point is 02:22:15 rapidly expanding garment industry provided new growth segments. The installment plan, the showrooms, the female demonstrators, all of the apparatus that had built the original empire continued to operate, although increasingly the message was about replacement and upgrade rather than first purchase. The Great Depression of the 1930s hit the company hard but not catastrophically. Sales fell, some factories cut shifts, some workers were laid off, some showrooms were closed, but the company was financially solid, with no significant debt and substantial cash reserves, and it weathered the worst years of the Depression in better shape than many comparable industrial firms. By the late 1930s, sales had stabilized.
Starting point is 02:22:58 Factories were running on something close to a normal schedule, and the company was looking forward to a steady, modest, somewhat boring future of incremental product improvements and gradual market expansion. Then the telegrams arrived again. The second wave of telegrams reached the Elizabeth Port offices in September of 1939, with the German invasion of Poland. The British and French declarations of war followed within days. The Clyde Bank facility, which had spent 20 years rebuilding its civilian production base,
Starting point is 02:23:27 suddenly found itself, once again, the subject of urgent attention from the British Admiralty. Within weeks of the September Declaration of War, military procurement officers were arriving at the factory gates with requirements lists, drawings, and the kind of expectant expression that suggested the conversion had better start happening rather quickly. The factory complied. Within months, the Clydebank shop floor was turning out shell casings, gun parts, and bomb fuses on the same machine tools that had been producing civilian sewing machines through the previous summer. The retooling, this time, was even faster than it had been in 1914,
Starting point is 02:24:05 because the institutional memory of the first conversion was still alive in the form of older workers and supervisors, who remembered exactly how it had been done before. The American side of the company watched the European events with a complicated mixture of professional interest and political reluctance. The United States was not yet at war. The American political mood through 1939 and 1940 was overwhelmingly isolationist. The official singer position, like the official position of almost every major American industrial firm,
Starting point is 02:24:34 was that the company would, of course, comply with any defence-related orders that the United States government might place, but that the company was not actively seeking such orders and was continuing its civilian production. at full capacity. This position was maintained through the fall of France in 1940, through the Battle of Britain that followed, through the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941, and through the steady tightening of American war preparations during the summer and autumn of that year. The position lasted, as positions of that kind always lasted, until the morning of December 7th, 1941. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the German Declaration of War that followed, four days later, ended the American debate about whether to enter the war.
Starting point is 02:25:21 Once the United States was formally at war with both Japan and Germany, the question shifted from whether American industry would convert to military production to how fast the conversion could happen and how completely the country's industrial capacity could be redirected toward the war effort. The answer, for Singer, was unusually fast and unusually complete. Within weeks of the December Declaration of War, the company was negotiating major defence contracts with the United States War Department, the Navy Department and the Army Air Forces. By the early months of 1942, the Elizabeth Port facility was producing artillery shells, bomb fuses, gun parts, and the kind of precision-machine components that the wartime economy
Starting point is 02:26:03 was suddenly demanding in volumes that nobody could have predicted six months earlier. The full conversion arrived in June of 1942. On a Monday morning in the middle of the month, the company formally ceased all civilian sewing machine production at its American facilities. The decision was, in some ways, even more dramatic than the comparable decision of the First World War, because in 1942 the conversion was complete.
Starting point is 02:26:28 There would be no parallel civilian production at Singer's American works for the duration of the conflict. The household machines that had been the company's defining product for 90 years, would not be coming off the lines again until the war was over. The entire industrial capacity of the company's American operations was dedicated, from June 1942 onward to the production of military hardware. The workforce expanded to match the demand. By the peak years of 1943 and 1944,
Starting point is 02:26:56 the total workforce across the company's American facilities had reached approximately 40,000 people. The Elizabeth Port Works alone employed something in the neighbourhood of 15 to 18,000 workers at peak, with smaller but substantial workforces at the Bridgeport facility in Connecticut, and at the various subsidiary plants that the wartime expansion had brought into the corporate family. The total workforce figure was the largest in the company's history before or since. The cafeterias served meals around the clock, the parking lots overflowed. The local Elizabethport housing market, which had been quiet through the 1930s,
Starting point is 02:27:31 suddenly tightened to the point that the company was helping arrange dormitory accommodations for workers who could not find rooms in the surrounding neighborhoods. The factories ran on three eight-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, six and sometimes seven days a week. The factory whistle that had marked the start and end of the working day for 70 years now sounded continuously at four-hour intervals around the clock. The smoke from the boiler stacks rose without interruption. The lights in the assembly halls burned through the, night, the shipping docks loaded freight cars and barges in continuous rotation, with finished
Starting point is 02:28:07 military components leaving the gates at all hours of the day and night, bound for armies that were fighting in North Africa, in the Pacific, in Italy, and eventually across northwestern Europe. The three-shift rhythm had its own peculiar effect on the surrounding town. The streets of Elizabeth, which had observed quiet pre-dorn hours for as long as anyone could remember, now carried a constant low-level traffic of shift workers walking to and from the factory gates at every hour. The all-night diners that opened to serve the third shift became small social institutions in their own right, with their own regulars, their own house specialties, and their own particular brand of late-night philosophical conversation conducted over coffee and
Starting point is 02:28:48 toast at three in the morning. The local buses adjusted their schedules to run around the clock. The taxi drivers learned the shift change times by heart. The wives, husbands, and children of the workers learned to keep their voices down during whichever portion of the day their household member happened to be sleeping. Because in a town where half the population worked at the factory and the factory ran 24 hours a day, somebody on every block was always trying to sleep through the daylight hours
Starting point is 02:29:15 and somebody else was always trying to eat breakfast at sunset. What the factories actually produced during these years was the kind of catalogue that a wartime. industrial historian could spend a career documenting. The list included artillery shells of various calibers designed for both field guns and the larger naval guns of the United States Navy. It included bomb fuses, both for aerial bombs and for the larger artillery rounds that were being shipped to the various theatres of operation. It included gun parts for rifles, carbines, machine guns and the standard American military sidearm. The 45-caliber pistol that had been part of the First World War contract
Starting point is 02:29:53 reappeared in larger quantities, with Singer producing components and, in a small but legendary run that collectors would later track with obsessive attention, a limited series of complete pistols. The actual number of pistols Singer produced under this contract was tiny by wartime standards, only a few hundred, but those particular pistols would, decades later, become some of the most valuable historical firearms in the United States, traded among collectors for prices that would of astonished the original Elizabeth Port workers who assembled them. The factories also produced aircraft components, primarily small precision parts that fed into the assembly lines of the bomber and fighter plants. Bomb site components, particularly for the famous Norden bombsite that was the
Starting point is 02:30:37 centrepiece of American precision bombing doctrine, were produced under contracts that required the kind of secrecy that the company had never previously dealt with. Whole departments at the Elizabeth Port facility were placed under restricted access, with armed guards at the doors, security clearances for the workers, and the kind of compartmentalised information protocols that the wartime military insisted on. Workers who had spent their entire careers polishing visible decorative scrollwork on sewing machine cabinets now found themselves machining components for navigation devices that they were not allowed to discuss with their spouses, their friends, or even with workers in other departments of the same factory. The list of items produced. The list of items produced
Starting point is 02:31:17 by the company during these years grew longer with each passing month of the war. Tank parts, submarine fittings, mortar components, naval gun mountings, detonator housings, anti-aircraft shell casings, landmine fuses, various components for vehicles that were being assembled at the Great Automobile Plants of Detroit, which had themselves been converted entirely to war production. The Elizabethport Works became, in effect, a general-purpose precision machining facility that could produce essentially any small to mid-sized metal component that the military authorities needed, in the volumes that they needed, on the schedules that they demanded. The company's institutional expertise accumulated over 90 years of producing high-precision
Starting point is 02:32:02 consumer goods at industrial scale, turned out to be almost perfectly suited to the demands of a fully mobilised wartime economy. The physical remains of the Elizabethport facility sat empty through the rest of the 1980s and through the 1990s, slowly deteriorating in the way that abandoned industrial sites deteriorate, where nobody
Starting point is 03:04:38 is paying attention to them. The roofs began to leak. The windows broke, one by one, until almost all of them were gone. The interiors filled with rainwater, then with pigeons, then with the kind of casual vandalism that empty buildings attract. The local authorities, the developers, the various entities that took theoretical responsibility for the site over the years, all faced the same problem. The land was heavily contaminated. The clean-up costs were enormous. The economic case for redevelopment in a town that had lost most of its industrial base was difficult to make. The site sat. The buildings stood. The Arthur Hill continued to run grey and slow past the empty loading docks, carrying its tidal water out toward the harbour that had
Starting point is 03:05:23 once received the company's shipping barges, now empty of the cargo that had once defined the entire stretch of shoreline. The Cathedral of Industry that Edward Clark had laid out in 1871 had become, by the turn of the new century, a ruined Hulk on the New Jersey coast, waiting for whatever would happen to it next. What happened to it next, and what continues to happen to it as the 21st century unfolds, is the final part of this story. The deterioration of the physical site was only one part of what was unfolding in the years after 1982. The other part, the more painful part was what was happening to the town that had grown up around the factory and that had, for more than a century, depended on it for almost everything. Elizabeth Port had been built,
Starting point is 03:06:09 in essentially every meaningful sense, around the Singer Works. The neighbourhoods within walking distance of the factory gates had been settled by Singer workers and their families. The local businesses had served Singer paychecks. The schools had educated Singer children. The churches had blessed singer weddings, singer funerals, and the slow rhythm of singer family life across multiple generations. When the factory closed, the community lost not just a major employer, but the entire economic and social organism that had held it together for four generations. The collapse was not immediate. It was slow, gradual and cumulative in the way that the decline of a small American industrial town in the late 20th century almost always was. The thousands of workers who lost their
Starting point is 03:06:55 jobs in the closing months of 1982 did not all leave the neighbourhood overnight. Many of them stayed for years, drawing on savings, on unemployment benefits where those were available, on the social networks of family and church that had supported the community for generations. They looked for other work in the surrounding region. Some of them found it. The work they found was, in almost every case, less skilled, lower paid, and less stable than what they had been doing at the factory. The crime rates rose, in the way that crime rates rose almost everywhere
Starting point is 03:08:51 in American urban communities during the same period, but with the particular sharpness that economic distress tended to produce. Burglary, theft, vehicle break-ins, the standard offences of communities where households were under financial pressure. The local police presence in the neighbourhood, never particularly heavy, was stretched thin. The local emergency services, particularly the fire department, struggled to maintain the kind of coverage
Starting point is 03:09:17 that the older industrial neighbourhoods had previously taken for granted. the local public services were squeezed in the same way that essentially every American industrial towns squeezed its public services during the de-industrialization of the late 20th century. The school system, which had been funded in significant part by the property taxes that the factory had generated and by the wages of the workers whose families lived in the surrounding neighborhoods, lost a substantial portion of its revenue base across the years that followed. Class sizes grew, teacher salaries lagged behind comparable districts in the the rest of the state. The buildings, several of which had been built during the company's peak
Starting point is 03:09:55 years specifically to educate the children of factory workers fell behind on maintenance. The local library reduced its hours. The municipal pool closed for the season earlier each year. The neighbourhood parks acquired a slightly weedy, slightly underfunded appearance that residents of better-off New Jersey towns learned to recognise as the visual signature of communities that had lost their primary employer. The housing market collapsed alongside everything else. The neat row houses that had been built for factory workers in the 1880s and 1890s, which had been respectable middle-class properties for generations, began to drop in market value year after year. The Sunday morning view from a passing car along certain streets of Elizabeth Port in the mid-1990s would have shown an observer something like every fourth house with plywood over its windows, every third lot with overgrown vegetation, and the occasional collapsed porch or fallen in roof that local authorities had not yet gotten around to demolishing. While the human community was contracting around the empty factory, a different and considerably more invisible problem was unfolding underground. The 110 years of continuous industrial operation at the Elizabeth Port site had, as every modern environmental scientist who has ever looked
Starting point is 03:11:34 at the historical records can confirm, produced cumulative environmental consequences that the original builders of the facility had given essentially no thought to whatsoever. The standards of industrial waste management that applied during the late 19th and most of the 20th centuries were, by modern standards, almost non-existent. The factory had produced throughout its century of operation enormous quantities of industrial waste. The waste had gone, in most cases, into the ground beneath the site, into the Arthur Kill that ran along the property line, or into the air through the great smokestacks that had marked the skyline above the town for more than a century. The specific contaminants involved were the standard mix that any large
Starting point is 03:12:15 19th and 20th century metalworking facility would have produced, heavy metals including lead, cadmium, chromium, and various copper alloys from the brass fittings and bobbin cases. Petroleum products, primarily lubricating oils that had been used to keep the machine tools running and had been routinely dumped on the floor, swept into drains, or simply allowed to soak into the wooden floorboards across decades of operation. Solvents from the paint shop, including the kind of aromatic hydrocarriage. that nobody in 1890 had any idea were harmful to human health. Asbestos, which had been used throughout the factory for thermal insulation on steam pipes,
Starting point is 03:12:54 boilers and various industrial equipment, and which had degraded over the decades into the kind of microscopic airborne fibres that modern remediation specialists treat with particular caution. Coal ash and the various combustion byproducts of burning hundreds of tons of coal a week for 90 years. PCBs from electrical equipment installed during the middle decades of the 20th century, industrial dyes and pigments from the paint operations, and the general background contamination of any large industrial site, which is the kind of slow accumulation of small chemical insults that nobody worries about individually, but which add up over the course of a century to a soil profile that no environmental engineer would describe
Starting point is 03:13:35 with anything resembling enthusiasm. The Arthur Kill, the tidal strait that had given the factory its access to the Atlantic Ocean, received the bulk of the discharged liquid-wit-wit-werews. waste throughout the operating decades. The discharge was, by the standards of the time, perfectly legal. Industrial facilities along the entire eastern seaboard of the United States routinely discharged their waste streams into adjacent waterways without any meaningful treatment. The combined effect by the late 20th century was that the Arthur Kill had become one of the most heavily contaminated waterways in the United States. The sediments along the channel contained measurable quantities of essentially every industrial contaminant that had been used by
Starting point is 03:14:15 any of the hundreds of factories that had operated along its banks across two centuries. The Singer-Sight contribution was a significant but not unique portion of the total contamination load. The waterway as a whole had been documented by Federal Environmental Authorities as requiring decades of clean-up work that had not yet been completed and that would not be completed for the foreseeable future. The contamination extended outward into Newark Bay, the larger body of water that the Arthur Kill emptied into, and from there into the New York and New Jersey Harbour Complex, which is one of the busiest industrial harbours in the world, and which has been documented as carrying contamination
Starting point is 03:14:52 loads that would, in any less developed region, qualify the entire body of water as an emergency clean-up zone. The fish in the Arthur Kill were considered too contaminated for safe human consumption for most of the late 20th century, with state authorities issuing advisories about which species could be eaten, in what quantities, and which should be released back if caught. The bird populations along the waterway had recovered partially after the worst of the industrial discharges ceased, but the overall ecological health of the waterway remained poor by any reasonable measure. The groundwater beneath the abandoned factory site was, on the basis of various studies conducted in the years after the closure, contaminated to depths that environmental engineers
Starting point is 03:15:36 described in technical reports, using the kind of measured language that nonetheless conveyed a sense of considerable concern. The contamination had migrated outward over decades, affecting nearby properties and complicating any potential redevelopment of the surrounding land. The cleanup obligations, in theory, were inherited by the various successor corporations that had owned the site over the years after the closure. In practice, the cleanup obligations bounce between successor entities through a series of legal transfers, bankruptcies and corporate restructurings, with the actual remediation work proceeding in fits and starts as funding became available, then stopping when funding ran out, then resuming when new ownership took on the responsibility,

The contamination was inherited, transferred, partially mitigating. ignored, addressed and ignored again over a span of decades that, taken as a whole, made it clear that nobody really knew what to do with the site and that nobody really had the budget to do whatever it was that needed to be done. The slow, ongoing story of the abandoned site and its environmental legacy was punctuated in January of 2024 by an event that briefly returned the location to the kind of public attention it had not received in four decades. On a cold Wednesday afternoon, in the middle of the month, a fire broke out in one of the surviving brick buildings on the former factory grounds.
Starting point is 03:17:39 The cause of the fire, when it was eventually investigated, was the kind of cause that fires in abandoned industrial buildings almost always have. Something had ignited inside the building, possibly from electrical sources that should not have been connected to any active power supply, possibly from unauthorised human activity inside the structure, possibly from any of the various unattended hazards, that accumulate in derelict industrial buildings over the course of 40 years. The exact ignition point was difficult to determine, because the fire spread rapidly through the wooden interior framing of a building that had been designed for the heavy industrial use of the late 19th century, and that had absorbed, across more than 100 years of operation,
Starting point is 03:18:20 the various oils, lubricants, paint residues, and other combustible materials that are sewing machine factory routinely generated. The local fire department received the first calls, in the early afternoon. The initial response was modest, as initial responses to industrial fires often are, on the assumption that the situation could be contained with a standard equipment loadout and a manageable crew. The assumption proved incorrect within the first 20 minutes. The fire grew rapidly. The building, which had not been maintained or inspected in any meaningful way for decades, behaved like an enormous brick chimney filled with seasoned timber, exactly the way that
Starting point is 03:18:58 any large industrial brick building from the 1880s and 1890s would behave under fire conditions if nobody had paid attention to its fire suppression systems for half a century. Additional firefighting units arrived in waves throughout the afternoon. Departments from neighbouring municipalities responded under standard mutual aid agreements. The total firefighting presence at the site by the late afternoon included more than 100 firefighters operating multiple aerial ladder trucks, pumper engines, foam units and the kind of specialized equipment that large industrial fires require. The smoke rising from the site was visible from across the harbour, from the New Jersey Turnpike, from the elevated portions of nearby rail lines,

Two roofs were gone. A substantial section of brick wall had collapsed. The interior was a smouldering pile of charred timber and collapsed industrial equipment that nobody had bothered to remove from the building during the closure four decades earlier. The clean-up work, when it eventually began in the weeks that followed, was complicated by all the same environmental concerns that had complicated every other effort to address the site over the previous 40 years. In the same months that the fire was being investigated, ordinary consumers around the world continued to purchase singer-branded sewing machines from major retailers, from online vendors, and from the various commercial channels

The machines themselves are assembled in factories in Asia, primarily in mainland China and Vietnam, in facilities owned by various contract manufacturers operating under licensing arrangements with the current brand holders. None of the machines are made in the United States. None of them are made in Britain, where the Great Clyde Bank works closed in 1980. Two years before Elizabeth Port, in the same general industrial collapse that consumed most of British manufacturing during the same period.
Starting point is 03:23:09 None of them are made in any of the countries that originally hosted the company's factories. The continuity between the modern, singer-branded products and the original company that built itself into a global industrial power in the late 19th century is, in any meaningful sense, almost entirely a matter of marketing. The trademark is the same. The font of the logo is the same. The general shape of the machines, on the lower-priced models, even retains certain echoes of the cast-iron designs of the 1880s. The actual industrial enterprise that those echoes refer to, however, has been gone for so long that most people purchasing the modern machines would not be able to give a coherent account of what the brand originally meant or where the original company
Starting point is 03:23:52 actually came from. This is, in a strange way, the most ordinary possible ending for a story of this kind. The grand industrial empires of the late 19th and early 20th centuries did not, by and large, survive the cultural and economic shifts of the late 20th century intact. Some of them disappeared entirely. Some of them were absorbed into larger conglomerates that promptly forgot what they had bought. Some of them, like the company we have been following, continued in the form of a recognisable brand name attached to products, manufactured by entities that had no continuity with the original founders. The pattern is so common across the industries of the period that historians of business have developed specific terminology to describe it. The brand outlives the company, the name outlives
Starting point is 03:24:37 the institution, the recognisers. The recognises of the business. The recognises of the period. The recognises of logo on the box in the discount retailers' appliance section outlives the Cathedral of Industry that originally produced the goods inside the box, sometimes by decades, sometimes by entire generations. What the story ultimately tells us, beyond the specific factual details of the rise and fall, is something about the temporariness of industrial dominance. The company looked, in its peak years, like it would last forever. The famous singer building on Broadway, briefly the tallest building on earth, was a physical assertion that the company had reached a permanent position at the top of the global industrial order. The Elizabeth Port Works, with their
Starting point is 03:25:17 130 acres of brick buildings and their internal railroad and their 47 separate structures and their endless rows of identical workstations, suggested an institution so deeply embedded in the physical landscape of the American economy that nothing could possibly remove it. The Clyde Bank facility, with its million square feet and its giant clock tower visible across half of Glasgow made the same suggestion in Scotland. The global sales force of 60,000 people, with showrooms in essentially every significant city on earth, suggested a network so vast and so deeply rooted that it would survive any conceivable disruption.
Starting point is 03:25:55 None of it lasted. The buildings stand empty or are gone entirely. The Singer building was demolished in 1968 to make room for a larger but less than less interesting office tower, in what remains one of the more painful episodes in the history of American architectural preservation, with the local historical societies arriving slightly too late to save what had been one of the most distinctive structures on the New York skyline. The Clyde Bank works were demolished in stages through the 1980s and 1990s, with the famous clock tower itself coming down decades before the rest of the facility.
Starting point is 03:26:28 The Podolsk plant survived in altered form through the Soviet era and was eventually reorganised as part of various Russian industrial reorganizations after 1991. The Elizabeth Port site, as discussed, sits empty, contaminated and partially burned. The workers who built the empire, the men and women who polished the cast iron, who hammered the brass fittings, who applied the gold scrollwork by hand, who operated the lathes and the drills and the presses and the assembly lines, are now almost entirely gone. The last few who were children in the wartime production years are old now, and there are not many of them left. Their stories, where they were recorded at all, exist mostly in scattered oral history collections and in the family memories of their descendants.
Starting point is 03:27:12 The vast collective effort that built and ran the empire, the millions of person years of labor that turned raw iron into finished machines and finished machines into household objects shipped across six continents has dissolved back into the ordinary anonymity from which it originally came. The names of the workers do not appear in the company's annual reports. The names of the workers do not appear on the bronze plaques in any surviving property. The names of the workers do not appear in most of the official histories of the company, and yet somewhere in the backrooms of antique shops, in the corners of attics, in the dusty cabinets of grandmother's parlours,
Starting point is 03:27:47 in the storage rooms of small-town museums and folk art collections, the actual machines themselves continue to exist. Hundreds of thousands of them, possibly millions. The cast-iron tradle models from the 1880s and 1890s, the polished black home machines from the 1900s and 1910s the electric portables from the 1930s and 1940s the troubled later designs from the difficult decades most of them still work the cast-iron treidel machines in particular are essentially indestructible requiring only periodic oiling and occasional replacement of small wear parts to continue functioning exactly as they did when they left the elizabeth port docks more than a century ago sewing enthusiasts collect them restore them Use them. Starting point is 03:28:41 from another. The machines themselves, the actual physical products that the empire produced, outlived the empire that produced them. They will continue to outlive it for decades to come, possibly for centuries, and yet the machines continue, the needles continue. The patient's steady stitching, 900 small motions to the minute, exactly as Isaac Merritt Singer had designed it to be in 11 sleepless days in a Boston workshop in the summer of 1850, continues in households around the world.
