My sister was shot 22 times.
A police officer, right?
But what do you do when the monster is the man in blue?
This dude is the devil. He hurt you.
This is the story of a detective who thought he was above the law
until we came together to take him down.
I said, you're going to see my face till the day that you die.
Listen to the girlfriends, untouchable, on the
iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
I got you.
Hey, everybody.
It's Chuck and Josh from the Stuff You Should Know podcast, and it's that time of year again
when we knuckle down to do our annual holiday episodes.
We collected our best past classic holiday episodes and compiled them into a 12
days of Christmas toys playlist that the whole family can enjoy.
That's right.
Maybe you missed it the first time we detailed the history of Beanie Babies, Monopoly, or Yo-Yo's,
and a whole lot more.
So listen to the 12 Days of Christmas Toys playlist
on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
or wherever you get your podcasts.
The holidays are meant for us
to spend time with friends and family.
Aw, isn't that nice?
To eat good food.
For sure.
To laugh and to blackout and to laugh.
Okay, if you could remember it.
Okay.
What if a family member, though,
overhears something that they were not supposed to hear
and suddenly Christmas is going to be extra weird and dramatic this year.
Unless you make a phone call on our show to deal with it first.
I'm sure that clears everything up.
That's the hope because one of our listeners needs help
thanks to the weird conversation she accidentally overheard
and it involves her boyfriend's mom.
You're going to find out what happened.
It's happening in your awkward Tuesday phone call right after this.
It's awkward.
It's Tuesday.
It's awkward Tuesday phone call.
Relationship problems.
We're not really familiar with that topic on this show.
That's like all we do.
Most people call us during our great girlfriends and perfect boyfriend.
The bragging segment.
Yeah.
The problem is there's no problem.
I know.
It's so hard.
Yeah, they're too perfect.
Today, we're going to do something a little bit different for us
and talk to a listener who says they would have.
been on that perfect boyfriend segment
but they just got blindsided
by something and they need our
help before they have this awkward discussion
so let's welcome Erica
to our show. Hey Erica
how you doing? Hi guys
I'm okay
I mean not great
blindsided. Big pause there. I hope we can
help you. Me too.
I'm just feeling super miserable actually
like I'm watching my relationship end
right before my eyes and I can't do
anything about it. Oh, God.
And you don't want it to end?
No.
Okay, just checking.
Okay. You never know.
I know. Yeah, it's true.
You know.
Brooks in the other side of that conversation.
No.
We never know sometimes.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry you're going through a hard time.
What's going on?
Okay, so like there's a little bit of
backstory getting into it
because like my friend asked me to watch
her kid this past weekend.
So we set them up in our guest room with a baby monitor.
And like afterwards, we forgot to take the baby monitor out.
Okay, wait, wait.
So you had a baby monitor in the guest room.
That's all that matters?
Yeah.
Okay.
So the next day, my boyfriend's mom came over.
And while I was down the basement doing the laundry, the baby monitor was still in there and it was on.
I forgot to turn it off.
And I heard my boyfriend talking to his mom.
Uh-huh.
On the baby line.
Yeah.
And like, I know that they had.
no idea that I could hear them because they were kind of like talking in a hushed tone and like
arguing with each other.
Uh-oh.
Were they saying like, oh, she's just such the perfect woman.
Yeah.
She's like, why haven't you proposed yet, honey?
Yeah, I love her.
I wish.
I mean, I know you should have eavesdrop, right?
Right.
Oh, I would totally eavesdrop in that situation.
Are you kidding me?
Don't feel bad.
That's the universe handing you this.
Yes.
Thank you, Jose.
Yeah, you're just.
Yeah.
What did you hear?
I mean, I was curious when like, it's a.
Like she, the mom was waiting for me to leave the room to say something.
So, you know, I, I listened in.
And it became pretty clear that they were arguing about me.
Okay.
Oh, God.
About what?
Okay.
So I heard his mom say I don't want her coming over for the holidays this year.
Oh, God.
Wow.
You was upset somebody.
What's your boyfriend's name, by the way?
It's Jack.
Okay.
Okay.
Did you guys have plans to spend the holidays together with his family?
Yeah, I mean, like, usually we go back and forth, and it's his family's year.
Okay, so it sounds like you guys have been together for a couple of years.
What did his mom say?
She was being pretty specific about, like, why she didn't want me there.
Like, she said that I was loud and that I eat all the snacks and that I'm really messy.
You would not want any of us over there there.
I think you would say it's the same thing.
I don't want to be rude here, but do you eat all of the snacks when you go over to their house?
That's what the snacks are for.
I know, but all of them?
Do you leave the bowl empty?
I mean, I ate a bunch of snacks last year, but I didn't realize there was a limit on snacking.
Totally.
And you're bored.
I mean, were you, like, the thing is.
If they were more fun, you would eat so many snacks.
Okay.
Brooke, it's not fair for you to project your family life onto her, okay?
If you're bored when you go stay with your in-laws, that's one thing.
But honestly, my in-laws do not eat very much, and I am so hungry all the time when I'm over there.
So I get you.
It's just rude when you tell them to go back to.
the store for more chocolate-covered princess, but that aside, I know, that must be terrible to hear
through the baby monitor of all things. Yeah, I mean, that wasn't even the worst thing. She said
that his nieces are scared of me and like, what? I scare children, apparently, like. Can I ask,
up until this point, did you think it was all roses with his family? I mean, I know getting
to know another person's, like, family quirks are hard, but I thought I was doing okay. Like,
I thought I was jiving
All right
And when you walk by schools
Do the children normally run away from the fence and terror?
No
We were just babysitting last weekend
And nobody was terrified of me
And did your boyfriend have anything to say
With his mom or was he agreeing with her?
He was trying to defend me
But like he didn't really get a lot of words in edgewise
And then his mom was like
Can't she just go stay somewhere else for Christmas?
And then she was like threatening him
She was like, don't you dare tell Erica
And I was really, really upset
I don't blame you
I like left the house to get out of the situation
I went to sat in my car and like tried to process
And like I texted him that I wasn't feeling well
Because I didn't want to like
Talk to him at that moment
I was just feeling a lot of feelings
And like
His mom left a little while later
And she like waved at me like nothing was
wrong right well in her defense she doesn't know that you're listening so she's being direct to her son and quick about it just getting to the point and yeah of course if she knew you were listening she would have been nicer it's just unfortunate that she had to hear that conversation or maybe it's kind of a blessing that you overheard it in like a weird way years into this relationship you guys are living together I mean you're moving towards marriage and making this woman your mother-in-law yeah like yeah god I mean you're
even if he loves me like I don't know if we've got a future going forward I mean if his mom really feels that way it's just like that's not gonna work so has he told you you're not welcome yet like do you know quote unquote no yet you know what I mean like right has he passed on the message from the mom in the nice way thank you thank you thank you no and like this happened like three days ago and like of course he's been surprisingly busy and never has the time to like hang out or talk
because I'm sure he's, like, trying to think about how to tell me this, but, like, I am just sitting on all of this emotion, and I, like, I need to talk to him and now-ish, you know, and I, I don't know.
I just need help.
So you want us to call your boyfriend for you here so that you could tell him that you overheard the conversation?
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Yeah, you got to do it.
There's no way around it.
Yeah.
And you can't just sit and wait.
waiting stew. I know, but he's going to be,
he's not going to be happy. Because it puts him
in such a bad position, you know,
to choose basically between his mom and his
girlfriend. It's a rough choice. So maybe
while we have a little break here, you
go down like a whole bag of Debbie snack cakes.
And then we'll come back. We'll give you some
advice and let you make your awkward Tuesday phone
call to your boyfriend right after this.
Okay, I've already eaten a couple of snack cakes.
All right. Snack up, girl, snack on.
You're doing it. We'll come back right after this. Hold on.
It's awkward.
It's Tuesday.
It's Awkward Tuesday phone call.
If you're just joining us, we have a listener on the phone.
Her name is Erica, and she has a boyfriend of a few years.
They live together, so safe to say they're pretty close.
Yeah.
And the other day, her boyfriend's mom was over,
and Erica overheard a conversation via baby monitor
that her maybe future mom-in-law does not want her coming over for Christmas this year.
And the reason, apparently, she eats all the snacks, scares all the kids, and is too loud.
At least that's what she heard from the mom.
She sounds like the cookie monster.
And obviously, that's a tough thing to hear, so she's not spoken to her boyfriend about this yet,
which is why she's asked us to give her a little bit of advice before she reaches out to him.
And look, nobody understands what it's like to spend the holidays with an in-law who doesn't really like you more than Brooke.
So, Brooke, you are the right person to ask advice for here.
What do you got?
Well, first, Erica, I just got to say you are not alone.
There has not been a mother-in-law in the world that has not talked crap about their little baby's significant other.
Okay?
I mean, unfortunately, you're the one that has to hear it.
Most people don't actually hear what mother-in-law really think and you had to hear it.
So I just think, I mean, honestly, my only advice is when you talk to your boyfriend, do not feel bad about accidentally overhearing this conversation.
That is not your fault.
It's not something you wanted to hear.
And for goodness sakes, you'll bring your own snacks.
Yeah, that's totally fair.
Anything, you should have been eavesdropping on their conversations earlier.
Jose, what do you think she should do?
Just remember who you're mad at.
The mom is the bad guy technically.
That's true.
That's good, Jose.
Making the decisions.
Your boyfriend's just trying to like organize this situation he's in.
He's like the middle child, keeping the peace.
Exactly.
So just be aware of your emotion.
Don't go at him super hard or aggressive.
Unless he says something stupid.
Yeah, then do what you do then.
Does that help you a little bit, Erica?
Yeah, that's pretty solid advice.
I mean, you're right.
It's not like he said about stuff.
He was trying to defend me.
I mean, it's hard to defend against your mom.
Yeah, anything.
All right.
I can't believe we actually gave some solid advice today.
So I'm counting this is a win already.
Hopefully we can actually make this conversation go smoothly for you.
but I'm going to dial your boyfriend's number.
We're going to step back and let you do this, okay?
We're going to be here for support in case you need us.
Yeah, we're here.
You are not alone.
Thank you.
All right.
Here we go.
We're going to be eating snacks.
Hello?
Hello?
Hey, babe.
Hello?
Babe?
Can you hear me?
What number of you follow me from right now?
I can recognize that.
I almost didn't even answer it.
I'm just, I'm on a work line.
I'm just like in a quiet room.
I really needed to talk to you.
Okay, yeah.
Is everything okay?
Well, like, I know we haven't been able to talk
in like a couple of days,
but this is like pretty important.
Because I'm just, you know,
I'm worried about us, actually.
Us? What? Why? What's going on?
It's just like, you mean so much to me, and I'm just kind of, like, devastated. I don't know what to do.
Babe, what is going on right now? You're scaring me.
I remember when your mom was over the other day?
Yeah.
Yeah, and I went downstairs to do some laundry for a bit.
Okay, sure, yeah.
Yeah. And my friend Katrina was there the day before, and she had left her baby monitor in the guest room, and it was still on.
Okay. So what, but I'm getting confused.
So I heard everything.
What are you talking about? Heard everything. What do you mean?
I heard you and your mom talking about Christmas this year at your family's house.
Okay.
Look, I'm sorry that you heard that, but I promise.
It's going to be okay.
I'm just, I'm thinking about how I'm going to deal with it still.
It's going to be fine, though, seriously.
What, how is it going to be fine?
I know that my mom was being, like, out of line about that, but I know she means well.
Like, I swear, like, it's going to be okay.
I just, okay, I don't, I don't see what we can, like, stay together after this.
I'm like, what do you mean?
I mean, clearly your mom hates me.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on.
No, no, like, you heard her.
She doesn't want me around for Christmas.
She says, I'm messy and I eat too much, and I scare all the kids.
Like, she just wants me to go anywhere else for the holidays.
Babe, stop.
No, like it.
Eric, Erica, Erica, she was talking about pebbles.
It wasn't talking about you.
What?
Our dog.
Oh my God.
The dog?
What's going on?
That makes so much sense with the children now.
Oh, my God.
Are you?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
It does make so much sense.
Hey, Jack.
Sorry, man.
You're on the radio right now with a show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Close to listening in on a baby monitor.
Sorry.
Oh my god
Pebbles
We're doing a segment
That we call the awkward Tuesday phone call
We were trying to help Erica
With this conversation with you
Because she overheard what happened
On the baby monitor between you and your mom
And she thought it was about her
Oh my god
Seriously
Must have in bad timing
Oh my god
Erica you were in tears
Oh my god
Well now I feel silly
You can keep eating snacks
Or what if she just keeps crying and goes,
but I love Babbles, no!
Are you sure that that's who your mom was talking about?
She was talking about the dog?
Yeah, obviously.
I knew she was talking about the dog.
That's how it all started.
The dog was, like, jumping on her bed and stuff,
and she was already getting annoyed with her.
Oh, it's top of mind right now.
She's like, by the way, this holiday season.
Oh, that makes so much sense.
Erica.
Yeah.
Pebbles was being hyper, and my mom,
is, you know, she's getting older and she can't keep up.
Yeah.
This is why your mom said, don't you dare tell Erica,
because Erica was going to get upset if they didn't bring the dog over.
Right.
Oh, well, this was probably the best way to tell her.
Make her think it's her and then when you find out it's the dog, that's not bad at all.
Well, yeah, there's definitely an amount of relief in that, but like, what are we going to do with couples?
What is people supposed to do?
Well, they have these great pet hotels.
Maybe your mother-in-law can help spring for it.
That's true.
Or I can puppy sit.
Oh, God.
Can't you stay with your family, babe?
Oh, but I mean, she would be sad.
Okay.
I mean, Erica, she's a dog.
It's their baby, Brooke.
I know, but, like, the dog doesn't know the difference between Christmas or any other day, really.
You don't speak for what Pebbles does and does not know.
I mean, I just am thankful that you have a future mother-in-law that likes you, right?
Yeah. Right, Jack? She likes Erica.
Yeah.
That is true.
That is very true.
believed that it wasn't me eating too many snacks.
Feel free to eat as many Christmas candies as you want this year, Erica.
She doesn't care when you put in your face.
It's the dog.
Yeah.
Well, it sounds like you guys are definitely at least closer to resolving the issue.
You just have to figure out what to do with Pebbles now.
Yes.
But, Erica, you're allowed to go over to the family's house for the holidays this year.
Ooh.
Yeah.
Wow.
The relief, you guys.
The relief.
Don't pee on the carpet because it could get you banned next year.
You know?
Brooke did that one Christmas.
It was not pretty.
I still don't know why my in-law's don't like me.
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
We often think we know our type in dating.
Tall, funny, a certain job.
But the research shows we're usually not the best predictors
of who will actually make us the happiest.
As we often say on the Happiness Lab,
our minds lie to us about all kinds of stuff.
And that definitely includes the kinds of things
we need to be happy in a relationship.
That's why it helps to stay curious.
On Bumble, features like shared interests and prompts make it easy to notice right on someone's profile initial sparks of compatibility,
like a shared love of cooking or the same nostalgic TV shows.
Shared interests and prompts let you showcase your personality right on your profile and connect with people who get your vibe.
And with photo and ID verification, you can feel confident the person you're talking to is real,
so you can date with a bit more confidence.
When you treat dating as exploration, instead of sticking to a rigid type,
you open yourself up to happier, more meaningful connections.
So maybe your type isn't tall, dark, and mysterious.
Maybe it's Love's podcast as much as you do.
Stay open, stay curious, and let yourself be surprised.

How many of these awkward Tuesdays end with just, oh, it was a terrible miscommunication.
Yeah.
You know, like big assumptions, not knowing the whole story.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What a classic case of it.
We do have comments from this one, right, Alexis?
Yeah, I mean, speaking to that, someone said the second that the mom said,
don't you dare tell Erica, I knew that they were talking about a dog.
I'm surprised that no one on the show thought to ask if they had any pets that go with
them to family.
That's really funny.
I think it'd be really funny if she was like, yeah, plus he licks himself too much.
Yeah, yeah.
You know right in front of us?
Then we would have clocked on.
We needed more details.
That's a lot of faith in us, Alexis, but okay.
But for us, that's normal.
Oh, my gosh, this is just hysterical.
The boyfriend is such a sweetheart.
This is a happy ending.
And some really solid advice all around.
We don't hear that a lot.
No, we don't.
Hold on to that comment.
We'll send that to the bosses.
Yeah, exactly, exactly.
