I felt it ripped through me. In season two of RipCurrent, we asked who tried to kill Judy Berry and why. They were climbing trees and they were sabotaging logging equipment in the woods. She received death threats before the bombing. She received more threats after the bombing.
Starting point is 00:01:19 I think that this is a deliberate attempt to sabotage our movement. Episodes of RipCurrent Season 2 are available now. On our new podcast Health Stuff, we demystify your burning health questions.
Starting point is 00:01:40 You'll hear us being completely honest about our own health. My residency colon was like a cry for help, honestly. And you'll hear candid advice and personal stories from experts who want to make health care more human. I feel like they never felt like I truly belonged in medicine. We want to make health less confused.
Starting point is 00:02:00 and maybe even a little fun. Find health stuff on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The show was ahead of its time to represent a black family in ways the television hadn't shown before. Exactly. It's Telma Hopkins, also known as Aunt Rachel.
Starting point is 00:02:15 And I'm Kelly Williams or Laura Winslow. On our podcast, welcome to the family with Telma and Kelly. We're re-watching every episode of Family Matters. We'll share behind-the-scenes stories about making the show. Yeah, we'll even bring in some special guests to spill some time. Starting point is 00:02:35 or wherever you get your podcasts. I cannot wait to hear if our listeners would be as upset as this woman is. Right, yeah. Yeah, we got a brand new awkward Tuesday phone call today. Welcome to the Second Date podcast. And we'd love to hear in the comments how you would react if you were in her position. I don't know that I would be as mad.
Starting point is 00:02:55 I don't know, though. But I have different priorities. So maybe that's what it is. We're a little different. I'm a little cheaper, so you'll understand in just a second. But first, comments, what do you see, Alexis? Yeah, Coco said, I grew up with my parents listening to you in the car, and now here I am listening to you at work.
Starting point is 00:03:10 This show practically raised me. I think the next step in your evolution is being on the show. I'm just so proud. Yeah, good for you. She has a job, but we're proud. All right, well, I just feel old. All right, here we go. Your brand new, awkward Tuesday phone call starts right now.
Starting point is 00:03:29 What do you do if you get scammed? Oh, goodness. Like, Jose, did you demand your money back after buying all those discounted online vegan pregnancy vitamins? Actually, no, I gave some to the girls in the studio, I think. Ashley, editor, Ashley got him. That's fair. Or Alexis, did you hire a lawyer to sue whoever did that to your hair? Tiffany is great.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I would never sue her. Oh. Oh, you like this. the way your hair looks. Yeah. Oh, yay. I use expensive shampoo. Hey, you know what?
Starting point is 00:04:05 Good for you. That was amazing. It looks shiny. Luckily, the woman on the phone today is much braver than all of us, because she's ready to confront the person who's been scamming her for the past three years. Whoa. The only problem, it also happens to be her boyfriend. Yikes.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Yeah, you heard that right. It's your brand new awkward Tuesday phone. phone call next oh it's awkward it's Tuesday it's awkward Tuesday phone call do you trust your significant other 100% it's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning like Brooke I have a question okay what would your husband Michael have to do to completely break your trust oh I mean obviously like the worst thing would be cheating yeah well pretty bad actually well for you though but maybe found your secret candy stash and ate one Reese's cup. That would be the worst.
Starting point is 00:05:03 You don't know my husband if you think he can only eat one Reese's cup out of a stash. He will literally annihilate the entire thing. Okay, so that's definitely number one. Cheating is a close second to stealing candy. Yeah, I trust him in the cheating stuff. Anything else is questionable. Yeah. I bring it up.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Did you feed her one of my Reese's? Yeah, I bet he would. I bring it up, though, because one of our listeners, Farah, says her boyfriend just shattered her trust. He wasn't unfaithful, but she did catch him in a lie. And lying might be the third most distrustful thing you can do after cheating and candy stealing. Obviously, we need to hear the whole story first, though. So, Farah, welcome to the show. Hey.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Oh, Farah. You sound so doubt. I know. I'm sorry to hear that your boyfriend lied, but maybe you could give us the full rundown so we can get up to speed, know where you're at. Okay. Well, God, I guess I thought we had the perfect relationship and, you know, that he loves me and everything, but I don't know, apparently not. What? You don't even think he loves you now after this? Whoa.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Well, I don't know. I don't know. Okay. What's his name, by the way? Ramon. Oh, is that really important? It is. I guess it is. How long have you and Ramon been together? About three years.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Ooh. Are you living together? Yeah. Okay. We're deep in. So what happened? What was the lie that you caught him in? So every Christmas, he gets me like a designer handbag. Oh, okay, Ramon. Oh, my goodness. A little Louis Vuitton, a little Chanel, you know, all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:06:46 All right. Wow. Yeah, I felt like so spoiled and everything, and it was great. Yeah. I mean, whatever he did wrong, I feel like you should forgive him for it, just based on that. So is that honeymoon face over? Is that what you're upset at that? Yeah, no bag this year? Yeah, I'm getting there.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Oh, you're serious. What happened? You said there was a lie. Yeah, okay. So one of my bags, one of the levitans, the strap broke. Yeah. And, you know, I didn't really think anything of it. So I just took it to, like, one of the stores.
Starting point is 00:07:19 And then they were like, we can't fix this. I'm like, what do you mean? you can't fix it. And they're like, this is fake. Wait, it's fake. I didn't see that coming. Oh, I totally thought she was going to buy a new one.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Like, oh, now he has to buy her another $5,000 bag. Yeah, but think about it. It's a good fake. That's what I was going to say. You didn't know if it tricked you. I'm like, I couldn't even believe it. I'm like, no, what do you mean it's fake? It's obviously it's not fake.
Starting point is 00:07:48 It's real. That's embarrassing, to be honest. And then I finally did believe it because they told me like the signs, like the serial number. Yeah, yeah. I felt like just humiliated and it was embarrassing. Did he tell? Yeah, here's my question.
Starting point is 00:08:02 When he gifts it to you, is there a big discussion about how much it costs and where he got it from? He made it very clear that it was authentic. Oh. And he just took the credit for it. He's like, yeah, well, anything for my girl. I'm like, really? Anything? I mean, I can see where that would be hard.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Yeah. So have you, like, actually talk to your boyfriend about that? this tell him that you know that he lied um not yeah i i mean i had to tell somebody so i i told like one of my besties and she was like maybe even more horrified than me and then she got me riled up oh that's never good and then he's like if he really loved me he wouldn't trick me and i'm like you know what actually you're right there's no way he didn't know i just like i'm so freaking pissed off right now and and i i got to talk to him about it but i don't know how so okay If he would have given you the bag and told you that it was a faux designer,
Starting point is 00:09:02 would you have been okay with that? I mean, I guess. Okay, that's a no. I was worried what if he got scammed? That's totally possible. Let's hope, right? Maybe somebody told him that they were real. And who seemed to know if it's fake or not?
Starting point is 00:09:17 Either way. When you buy it out of a trunk of a car, how could you guess that it's not real? Hey, I went to my boat on Facebook Marketplace, and those were famed. Tough times. What is done? I didn't know. The car was a Mercedes, so I have to trust that. But, okay.
Starting point is 00:09:32 So you want our help? It sounds like confronting your boyfriend for the first time. Yeah, I mean, I need help confronting him, and I need help just, like, what am I going to do with this? Are you open to hearing his explanation? He'd better have a good one. Okay. And after we make the awkward Tuesday phone call, are you open to selling those handbags to Alexis at a discounted rate? I think I'm going to need more than a discount.
Starting point is 00:10:00 I might need free. We'll see. Okay, that's fine. Well, we're going to... We're just a real one. We'll think of some good advice to give you before we let you call your boyfriend to confront him to ask why he tried to lie to you and give you fake designer handbags. I already feel bad for this guy. He's about to get a phone call.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Or maybe he doesn't even realize they were fakes. Yeah. We'll try and figure it out with your Awkward Tuesday phone call right after this. Thanks, guys. It's awkward. It's Tuesday. It's awkward Tuesday phone call. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Starting point is 00:10:36 We're talking to our listener, Farah, who says one of her favorite things in the world is getting a designer handbag from her boyfriend, Ramon, every year for the holidays. It just hits different when you hear this music with it, too. It does, actually. But one of her least favorite things is finding out three Christmases in that at least one of those designer bags was a fake. Oh, no. And possibly all the other ones, too.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Yeah. Meanwhile, Ramon, he's been taking credit and accepting praise for being such a great boyfriend for all these years, for all of his generosity. And that realization has made Farah question the entire relationship. Yeah. Like, what else is he faking? Yeah, as her boyfriend really trustworthy? worthy or has he just been trying to deceive her this entire time?
Starting point is 00:11:24 She has not spoken to him about it yet, and that's why she wants our help. Farah, does all that sound correct? Are we missing anything from the story? I think that's about right. I like how she started sad and then just got more angry as she told it. Well, maybe you'll feel a little bit better after we get you some advice here. Brooke, what do you think? What's your advice?
Starting point is 00:11:43 I mean, I think that's true, right? But I think that there's a way to know whether he accidentally got scammed or not. Oh, really? And that's by saying, oh, my God, my bestie has been dying to find the same bag that I have. She can't find it anywhere. Where did you get this? And if he says, like, eBay, T-moos, you know, yeah, Facebook marketplace. Back of a bowling alley.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Then you'll know that he got scammed. Right? There's got to be somebody selling Hermes bags legitimately behind a bowling alley. But if he says the Birken store, I don't even know if those exist. He can't just walk on in there. He's got to get invited. Yeah, well. If he says that, then you know he's lying.
Starting point is 00:12:24 I do like the idea of laying a trap for him that he'll just walk into. That's a good trap, Brooke. I knew there was a reason I trusted you guys. Farah, in the radio business, we are number one in laying traps. How do we get our listeners to stay? Trap them too. That's right. So, okay, you got all the ammunition that you need.
Starting point is 00:12:43 We're going to step away, dial your boyfriend's number and let you make your awkward Tuesday phone call. You ready? Yeah, I'm ready, I guess. You got this. Here we go. Nervous. Hello? Hi.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Hey. You're we calling me from? There's like another number here. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Babe, I didn't recognize it. I hardly was going to pick it up. I didn't know it was you.
Starting point is 00:13:16 But I'd love to hear your voice. What's up, Mommy. How are you? It's me. I just, I had a quick question about, you know, so Georgia, she, like, loves my new bag, and she wants to get the same one for her sister. And she wants to know, where did you get my bag? Well, you mean she wants to buy the same bag?
Starting point is 00:13:39 Yeah, she's like, this is the perfect bag. Oh. I mean, well, of course it is. It's the same one I got for you. So, yeah. Cool. Okay. Well, where?
Starting point is 00:13:50 Where'd you get it? Oh, yeah, I got downtown, babe. That's why I usually get my stuff downtown. Okay, like their downtown store, like the official one? Yeah, like downtown, you know, like, yeah. Okay, you keep saying downtown. You've said it like four times now. Can you be more specific?
Starting point is 00:14:16 Yeah, baby, like downtown the store, you know, you know the store. Oh my God, you just said it again. Let me make it, like, really clear for you, really clear and simple, because obviously you need that. I think I know why you don't remember. Yeah. What do you mean, babe? Basically, because it's fake. Babe, come on, you're talking craziness.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Come on. What are you talking about? Oh, I'm talking crazy now. Yeah, come on. I went there the other day, my strap broke. like I went there to go get it fixed Oh well why would you do that Why didn't you tell me I would have taken care of it babe
Starting point is 00:14:56 Because I didn't think it was that big a deal And I was already near downtown Maybe it was a new employee babe, come on I mean give me the bag Look I'll go get the bag and I'll take care of it for you Okay The serial number and it was like fake It like didn't show up in the system
Starting point is 00:15:15 It was ridiculous and there was so many other things too But I can't even begin to explain and I don't even have to explain because if this one's sick maybe the other ones are too geez, I don't know All right, all right, all right, Mamita.
Starting point is 00:15:26 I'm sorry, Momita me. No, but listen, all right, let's put it this way, okay? I'm crazy about you no matter where I got it, how I got it, where I got it,
Starting point is 00:15:38 who made or who didn't make it, it was all given to you with a lot of love for me. You know, I'm madly in love with you, Mamita, you know? But you,
Starting point is 00:15:47 I don't think you get it. You lied to me and you lied for like a long time. Do you even understand how embarrassing this is for me? But mamita, our love is real.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I mean, not we're going with material stuff. I mean... Oh, my God. Are we going to let like material stuff like... I can't with you right now. All the magic that we have
Starting point is 00:16:06 are, you know, let'sro amos, you know, and you know what now that we're in this conversation? I'm going to say it. I'm going to say it. Will you marry me?
Starting point is 00:16:14 What? Whoa. What? What? What? Not the top of. Okay, I mean, if you're going to get into this conversation, that's how much I love you. Will you marry me, Mommy?
Starting point is 00:16:23 Dude. What is happening? This is not the right moment. This is awful. You're not even face-to-face, Ramon. Wait, yo, me, amor, who told these people on the line on the line? Yeah. I'm right here.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I know. I think Ramon is noticing that there's a whole bunch of other voices on this phone call because Ramon, you actually are on the radio right now on a show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Yikes. Oh, man. Why am I on the phone? Why am I? She needed help.
Starting point is 00:16:53 She needed help. Okay, I called them so that they could help me with this because I had a feeling you were going to just like tell me a bunch of bullshit. Oh. My, mommy, but what are you talking about bullshit? I mean, I got you a bag. I mean, you could physically touch it and you really have a bag. Yeah, but you acted like it was real the whole time.
Starting point is 00:17:13 You took all the credit. I was like proud of it. Well, it is real. I mean, don't you put things in. Isn't it? It's a bag. Like the designer designed it real. Mamita, you know what? Are you forgetting that you're going back in this conversation?
Starting point is 00:17:28 I want to marry you. Okay, everybody's talking at the same time. We need to slow down. Let's put the bag aside. What about the marriage proposal? Was that real? Of course it's real. I already got the ring for us and everything, too.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Wow. Oh. You did. Yeah, me, Amor. I got the ring for us. Is he going to downtown? Yeah. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:17:47 You probably did, to be honest. I mean, when do you go and ask, oh, where did you get the ring? Did you get it here? You got it there. I mean, what is all these questions? It doesn't matter where you got or how you got. It's the intention of giving it. Wait.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Man, you're smooth, dude. Are you feeling like a lot of pressure maybe to, like, spend more than you have? All right. The truth is, I don't make a lot of money, okay? My job, I don't make a lot of money, okay? And I want to deliver, you know? And then sometimes I want to go ahead and deliver all the way. and sometimes got to do some things here and there
Starting point is 00:18:19 to make a half-passion there. And you didn't think to maybe, I don't know, say that. But he did just say that. It just took a minute. It took him to be interrogated and being exposed for his lies. Still, I mean, I think he does feel a little bit exposed right now. Ramon, I think that that was a very, very sweet thing for you to say, and it makes me want to know, will you marry me?
Starting point is 00:18:39 Oh, yeah. Because I also have a ring. But, guys, I mean, I really, really, really, really love this girl, please. I mean, this could be, you guys, this could be a really relationship foundation moment for you, too. You know, like, maybe you're finally going to open up and be vulnerable with each other. Yeah, yeah. Wait, wait, who's this girl who's talking right now?
Starting point is 00:19:00 That's Brooke. Don't fall in love with her. Oh, Brooke, you're the best. Guys, listen to Brooke. Okay. Don't listen to these guys. These guys are troublemakers. Got you, Ramon.
Starting point is 00:19:09 You've said what you had to say. We need to hear from Farah, though, because she's been staying pretty quiet. Farah, where's your head at right now? I am going to keep it real simple. I know you love me. Of course I do. But if we're going to have a future together, you need to stop pulling this shit. Okay.
Starting point is 00:19:30 I mean, I was just trying to do the right thing. No, no, I mean, that's it. That's just period. Okay. And just so you know, if you ever proposed me with a fake ring, I'm not putting that on my finger. Oh, no. All right. And you know she's going to be checking it, so be careful.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Yeah. Well, that's okay. And I don't know what you mean by fake or real, Myanmar. We'll talk about that later, okay? Okay. Lab grown is still considered real. Just saying. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:20:01 We'll talk later. Anyway, can we? Fair does not agree with you there, bro. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. I'm Stefan Curry, and this is gentleman's cut. It's just maybe their communication was not awesome. Yeah, totally, totally. She definitely seems like she is done with his generous gifts, though, going forward.
Starting point is 00:22:00 It also makes me feel like it's one of those couples that have no idea what the others do or how much the other makes. She's like, yeah, it's for three years. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Doesn't add up. You know she's not going to tell her girlfriend's that it's all fake, though, right? No. No. No, she's regretting that she already told one.
Starting point is 00:22:16 He just lost the Louis Vee's certificate that comes with it. Oh, man. A whole relationship suffered. But it is probably a good lesson to anybody with a boyfriend. If they get you any gift ever, don't trust it. No, Jeff. Even if they're buying you a Starbucks coffee, I'd go in skeptical. No, that's not the message.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Who knows where that latte really came from? Downtown, probably. Oh, same Starbucks cup you keep using over and over again. Skepticism is the key to a healthy relationship.
