Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Join us as we tackle science and culture topics
from a galaxy far, far away,

or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two.

From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we picky here,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it
with our friends,
fellow comedians,
and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year
for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, what's good, y'all?
You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games.
This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing.
How many men carry a suit or armor.
It signals to the world that you're not to be played with.
And just because you have the capability that does not.
not mean that you need to listen to learn the hard way on the iha radio app apple podcast or wherever
you get your podcast hope you're having a great tuesday uh that only means one thing on this podcast
and that it is awkward tuesday phone call the only thing that can overtake taco tuesday that's right
that's right oh and see go to my oh my god this is what we've been training for how did i just know that
it just aligned today all the stars yeah my god look you are not nearly as drunk as you should be
right now. Or I have not eaten as many tacos as I should have either. That's true. You should be drunk and full.
You're behind. Okay. Let's get it done. Let's get a brand new episode out right now and then we're all
headed to the bar together. Okay. Do we have any comments before we get there? Yeah. You know,
we said the other day someone uses our second date update to tie in their showers. Oh yeah.
So Sim commented, that guy uses it for shower time. Ha! I use it for toilet time. Any longer and my
legs go numb and I can't walk right.
I know my stomach's upset.
I've listened to two second dates back to back.
No, no more details, please.
He loves the classics on the weekends.
Oh, yeah.
All right, here we go.
Let's not make it any more awkward than it is.
The awkward Tuesday phone call,
Brett New starts right now.
Out of all the milestones in a budding relationship,
the first kiss, first sleepover,
first time clogging their toilet and blaming it on their dog.
Oh, I don't know.
He just climbed in there.
Yeah, it wasn't me.
First one I always look forward to the most is the first big argument.
Oh.
Oh, what is it going to be about?
I love that because that's when you really get to see what it would be like to date them for the long haul.
Yeah, that's true.
Well, one of our listeners reached that milestone on date number three.
Oh.
Oh, good.
And it was not pretty.
She went in pretty hard on the guide.
Admits she was actually the one in the wrong.
But is it too late?
apologize now, we're going to find out what happened and try to help save the relationship
when we do your brand new Awkward Tuesday phone call next.
It's awkward.
It's Tuesday.
It's awkward Tuesday phone call.
One of our bread and butter segments on this show is the second date update.
Yes.
But where do you turn if you already have the second date?
You're on your third.
Things are looking really good.
Yeah.
Trying to land that plane.
but you don't see the ice on the tarmac.
Oh, no.
And suddenly the budding relationship skids off the runway
straight into a fireworks factory.
What?
Wow.
Why there?
Just as disastrous as disaster could get.
Who built those next to an airplane runway?
It was to celebrate the opening of the airport.
It was a bad choice.
Why not like a pillow factory?
Yeah, exactly.
That's basically where our listener, Isabella, finds herself
after going on a third date that went south,
and she thinks it's all her fault.
Oh, no.
But she wants our help to try and repair it.
Isabella, welcome to the show.
Hi, thanks for having me, guys.
Oh, you sound down.
I am down.
The guy I've been talking to has just, like, completely ignored me now.
Oh, the worst.
And for once, it was the woman's fault.
This is interesting to me.
We don't know that show.
Don't say that.
50% of the time, it's a little.
woman's fault. I'm just saying she's admitting
that it's her fault. Oh, that's what you mean.
And I'm curious why you think that,
Isabella. What happened? Yeah, no,
I'm pretty sure it's my fault.
It was just something that I
did. It was stupid. It ruined everything.
Okay. Wait, slow down. Is this something
you did on the first date? Something you did on the
second date? It was actually our third.
Oh, you did go on a third day. I'm sorry. I didn't understand that.
I know. My intro was relevant for once.
It's amazing. Who's the guy?
that you were out with?
His name's Marco.
Okay.
Okay.
Polo.
That would probably get him to stop calling you back.
That would ruin it, yes.
That's why you just texting that?
I mean, his whole life, right?
What happened on the third date with Marco that made you think something was wrong?
Okay, well, he isn't telling me why, but this is my guess.
The last time we hung out, I was hoping, you know, things would happen, if you know what I mean.
Yeah.
Okay.
You're feeling connected to him.
You're excited about it.
A few dates now?
Do some Sudoku, maybe at the end of the night.
Sure.
Yeah, some naked Sudoku.
Dang it.
I already did nine.
It's hot.
So we were hanging out.
It was getting late.
We were watching some boring National Geographic video about birds.
I don't know.
Okay.
Yeah, he's starting to fall asleep.
What?
And so like...
Wake up, Marco.
Yeah.
I know.
I wanted him to like, stay up and have fun.
So I was like, you know what?
Let's go get an energy drink.
And he didn't have one at his place.
So he was like, oh, well, there's a...
a gas station a couple blocks away.
Let's just hop in the car and I'll take you real quick.
So we get there.
He parks the car at one of the pumps.
He gets gas.
I go inside.
And when I come out, it looks like he's going through my phone.
Like he looks like he's holding my phone in his hands.
So I come out.
I get really aggressive quick.
And I cue them.
I'm like, hey, don't go through my stuff.
What are you doing?
You can't just go through my phone.
That's not okay.
Well, turns out it was his phone.
Oh, no.
Oh, yikes.
Oh, that's a bad look.
Oh, no.
But I'd already said it, and I'd already come at him, like, real aggressive.
You sound really sweet.
Like, how scary do you get?
I mean, I can get mad, especially when I feel like boundaries are being crossed, you know?
And especially since I had an ex who went through my stuff and he broke trust constantly,
but I shouldn't have accused him.
Yeah, you were, like, on edge about it.
And when you accused him of going through your phone,
What was his reaction?
Well, he was just sort of like taken aback.
And he was like, this isn't yours.
Like, what the heck?
Like, that was crazy reaction.
It's so interesting when you're dating someone in the very beginning and you see that first side of them.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, this is what I'm getting into.
Right.
But it's not even the worst part.
Oh, no.
My problem was that I didn't drop it for the rest of the night.
What do you mean you didn't drop it?
Well, on the whole right home, I brought it up again.
And I was like, just tell me if you look through my phone.
Oh, wait.
Oh, no, I thought you were apologetic all night.
Why did you not believe him?
I think it was just triggering for me, you know?
It was just like I had X do that to me in the past.
That is obviously not a good look, but we do appreciate you being honest and vulnerable.
I know that's hard to do.
Yeah, I mean, I realize I was going wrong.
but after that, he was just like,
oh, we should just call it a night.
Oh, that feels bad.
You don't even want to go inside and drink the energy drinks
and see what happens?
No.
Geez.
Yeah, the mood's pretty much ruined.
When did you work in your apology?
I mean, I apologize over text a few times,
but I haven't, like, call them.
I've done it over the phone or anything yet.
I mean, I think part of your biggest hurdle here
isn't that you got angry and
you know, miss saw the situation.
It's that the length
of time it took you to rebound.
Yeah. Sounds really long.
Very true.
Yeah. Okay. Didn't made that worse.
My bad. What other flaws do you see in her
personality? What should we bring out? I mean, that's just
hard. Like, you do owe him a big apology.
A sincere one. Yes.
Yeah, I know that you're right. I just,
I'm hoping that you guys can help me figure out how to do
this. Like, how do I undo this? How do I go about
apologizing to them? While still
expressing my boundaries
for the future. I don't think you need
to anymore. I think he gets your boundaries.
Those are very clear.
A lot of behavior changes going forward, but
in the meantime, we're all going to go to the
break room. We're going to grab some monster energy
drinks and pound them to think of the
best advice we could give you before
we come back and let you call your
guy, Marco.
Guy you're talking to. Guy you're talking to, dating.
casually and see if we can get him to give you one more chance.
I'm going to go through Brooks phone while you guys do that.
Okay.
That's a good call.
We should all look at Brooks phone.
It's so funny if you found something fun.
And then we'll let you do it with your awkward Tuesday phone call right after this.
Hold on.
It's awkward.
It's Tuesday.
It's awkward Tuesday phone call.
Trust is a fickle beast.
Oh, yes, it is.
Once you lose it, it's almost impossible to get it back.
Oh, yeah.
And that's what our listener, Isabella, is dealing with.
after her third date with a guy named Marco,
where she accused him of looking through her phone
while she was in a gas station buying drinks.
Yeah.
Turns out he was looking at his own phone,
and her insecurities from a previous relationship kind of took over.
Yeah.
Worst part, though, was she wouldn't drop it,
the entire ride home,
and they parted ways on a really weird note,
have not spoken since,
so she's coming to us seeking advice
on how to properly apologize
and hopefully smooth things over.
Yeah.
It should be super easy.
Brooke, what's your advice for Isabella?
Well, this might come off as a little manipulative.
Oh.
I like it.
I already like it.
What is it?
You don't like it.
But what you need to do is you need to say you're sorry.
Say you're so embarrassed.
Yeah.
Start crying.
Oh.
Start crying.
Tears.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And just tell him that you're just not used to being around such an amazing guy like he is.
and that you'll get used to it and you're excited about it.
Okay.
What do you think about that, Isabella?
Can you cry on command?
You know, I could try, but I like that idea of buttering him up.
Yeah, it's taking a really positive angle.
Yes, men have a very difficult time when a woman starts crying, being able to do anything except agree with her.
Yeah, I'm so sorry, what do I do here?
Yeah.
All right, so that's your advice.
You can use as much or as little bit as you want, Isabella.
It's really up to you.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, don't start crying yet.
We haven't even gotten Marco on the phone.
I don't think it's going to be fake.
I think it's going to come out naturally.
Oh, boy.
It might be.
I hope not.
I hope there's no tears.
I know, because then I'm going to be uncomfortable.
But let's see what.
I love a good cry.
Okay.
We'll see what happens.
I'm going to dial Marco.
We'll see if he picks it up.
Good luck, Isabella.
Hey, thank you.
Here we go.
Hello?
Marco.
Um, hi.
Hi.
Why are you calling me?
Whoa.
Well, you're not answering any of my texts.
I really wanted to talk to you.
Things were good between us before the night of the gas station.
Can we do this a different time?
I really got to run.
Well, look, I just wanted to talk.
I messed up.
I'm just not used to being around such a good guy, you know?
And I'm so sorry.
And I'm embarrassed.
And wait a second. Are you crying? What's wrong? I just thought we had a really good connection. And I'm sorry about that night. And you're just a good guy and I'm not used to that, you know?
You need to stop crying.
No, I really am sorry.
I didn't mean to come at you so aggressively like that.
Just like I thought you were going through my phone.
And I've had to deal with X's doing that in the past.
And they broke my trust.
And so I'm sorry.
I'm sorry that I accused you of that.
Look, are you really trying to use this phone thing to cover up what you did?
What?
What do you mean?
What are you talking about?
Oh, come on.
You know.
No, I don't know.
What are you talking about?
At the gas station?
Hello, I saw you.
What did you see?
When you were in the store getting the energy drinks?
What?
What?
I saw you flash the employee.
What?
What?
What?
Awkward.
Dang.
What?
Like lift your shirt up?
Is that what you mean by show?
ID.
What happened?
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my God.
What is this?
What's going on?
Hey.
Oh, kind of like a flash.
Yeah.
We're trying to figure out the same thing, Marco, because this is a radio show.
We're called Broken Jeffrey in the morning.
And Isabella is a listener.
She reached out for help trying to have this conversation with you.
She really wanted to apologize and be sincere about the accusations about you going
through her phone.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay, well, that's not really the problem.
Okay.
Well, we didn't know that.
Lock us through this.
Well, whatever you think you saw, it probably was like a weird misunderstanding.
Isabella, you didn't actually flash the gas station clerk.
Oh, God.
What?
Why would you ever?
I've never flashed anyone in my life and I've done all sorts of weird stuff.
I'm shocked to hear that from you, Brooke.
Her husband hasn't even seen her with her top of.
A, the lighting in a gas station.
is terrible. Those videos go viral
all the time of gas station security cameras.
Why would you flash
a gas station attendant?
Okay, so when we went to the gas station,
I left my purse back at the house, and I didn't
have anything to pay for the drinks,
and I didn't want to bug him. So,
I asked the clerk if I flashed him, would he
caught me, and he's been here?
What? That works?
Okay, wait, no. A new life hack,
unlocked. I mean, you had your bra on. It's just like
showing a bikini top, right?
Yeah, I wasn't a big video, although both of them were out.
Oh.
Nice.
I'm glad it wasn't just one of them.
That would be even more awkward.
So Marco, that doesn't work for you?
Okay, look, we hadn't even kissed yet, and you're already showing, like, you're flashing
some gas station weirdo?
Well, I didn't, I couldn't pay for it, and I didn't want to ask you to pay.
And for the record, I didn't kiss you on the first few days because I'm a lady, and I don't do that.
You're a lady?
You just paid for two energy drinks by showing some rando your boobs.
It was a classy flash, Brooke.
That's what a lady does.
What's your talking about?
I got a free drink out of it, you know?
Yeah.
That's not, no.
Okay, what I think we really need to focus on is not the flashing,
is on getting Marco and Isabella talking and possibly hanging out again.
Uh.
I don't know.
Marco, where's your head at?
Ah, man, I don't know.
I guess it's just, I don't want to be with someone who does that.
I mean, think about it, Isabella, if the rolls were reversed and he went in and dropped trow
to get a free coffee, like, how would you feel about the situation?
I just helicoptered it for a slurpy.
You know what I mean?
I would do that, though.
They just gave these to me for free.
Yeah, they told me to get out.
I didn't even want them.
You wouldn't like that, Isabella.
I mean, I don't know.
Use what your mama gave you.
Wow.
That sounded like a Brooke line.
Yeah, that's like a woman's body line, bro.
Yeah.
Female positivity.
That's not empowerment.
Okay.
Oh, that's not.
Sorry, Isabella, the empowerment police apparently just came in,
dropped the hammer on you in your chest.
The lady who told me the fake cry is now like high moral grounds.
You told her to fake cry?
What is wrong with you?
No.
It's empowering.
crying. No, I never said fake. I said if it happened, that that would be a good thing.
Isabella, you're as messed up as the people you got to do this.
Well, now we look bad. I take it as a compliment.
Okay. I've never been anything but trashy, so it's fine.
Anyway, clearly, I mean, we thought this was a misunderstanding over phone stuff.
Turns out it was a misunderstanding over a topless gas station payment.
And that on top of the phone. I'm sure Marco would have gladly paid for the energy.
It was a nice move for her, though, to not have to ask for him to pay.
She should have got more than just two energy drinks at that point.
Yeah, absolutely.
Slashing for a good cause now.
Isabelle, I guess that's the lesson that we learn.
Make sure you grab a bag of funnions on your way out next time before you show the goods.
Emphasis on the fun.
Okay, thanks, guys.
I'll try to remember that.
But, Marco, please, can we just hang out?
I will say she's got a good attitude about all of this.
We've gone pretty hard on her and she's still laughing.
At least you know, why?
why she did it.
It wasn't for like her own joy.
Yeah.
She forgot her.
It sounds like it maybe was a little bit.
Well, okay.
There's a little bit of.
It wasn't void of joy.
That's true.
The first time she's done it.
Not.
But she just didn't want to bug you and force you to pay.
That's somebody that I would want in my corner if I was you.
So I would rethink hanging out with Isabella again.
I mean, if you ever run out of gas in a remote area.
You know you're good.
You don't need your apple pay.
Marco, what do you think?
I don't know.
This is all just a little too crazy for me.
I'm a pretty simple guy.
Oh, yeah.
He goes to pay.
Maybe we call the gas station attendant for a second date update.
I mean, she's not really my type anyway.
I don't know what he expects.
I'm a lady, so.
Oh, yes.
No one will ever doubt that.
Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
And the only other time I've ever heard of flashing people to get free stuff,
was at Mardi Gras.
Oh.
I didn't know it was an option at 7-Eleven.
It should have signs up that say we accept cash, card, and sea cups.
Oh, yeah.
Or spring break in the early 2000s in Mexico.
Oh, yeah.
Well, what else can we get for this?
I want to try to board a plane doing this.
I don't think it works as good for you.
What?
You show up at the airport and whip it out?
Yeah.
Women don't fall for it the same way.
No.
Yeah.
Desensitized or something.
I know what it is.
And it is unfortunate, but I just,
do think it's respectable that Marco
said no to her after hearing everything.
How could you not?
I mean, is there a bigger red flag?
It is a little bad start of that.
And that she didn't even
bring that up to us as a possible...
Only she thought anybody saw it.
Yeah, that's the real thing.
But we did have plenty of dudes on the text board at
7, 8, 5, 9, 2 being like, oh, yeah,
that's my kind of woman.
Yeah, I totally dander. Don't let him judge you, girl.
Get rid of my number.
So got to love our listeners for that.
Of course.
But if you miss today's awkward call or you want to hear more of them, we got all of them online on our podcast.
Find it at Brooke and Jeffrey.
