Starting point is 00:00:34 Through unforgettable love stories and into conversations with characters you'll never forget. I think any good romance, it gives me this feeling of like butterflies. I'm Danielle Robay and this is Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club, the new podcast from Hello Sunshine and iHeart Podcasts where we dive into the stories that shape us on the page and off. Each week I'm joined by authors, celebs, book talk stars, and more for conversations that will make you laugh, cry, and add way too many books to your TBR pile.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Listen to Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. So what happened at Chappaquiddick? Well, it really depends on who you talk to. There are many versions of what happened in 1969 when a young Ted Kennedy drove a car into a pond. And left a woman behind to drown.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Chappaquiddick is a story of a tragic death and how the Kennedy machine took control. Every week we go behind the headlines and beyond the drama of America's royal family. Listen to United States of Kennedy on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. I knew I wanted to obey and submit, but I didn't fully grasp for the rest of my life what that meant.
Starting point is 00:01:54 For My Heart Podcasts and Rococo Punch, this is The Turning, River Road. In the woods of Minnesota, a cult leader married himself to 10 girls and forced them into a secret life of abuse. But in 2014, the youngest escaped. Listen to The Turning River Road on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Ian Pfaff, the creator and host of The Uncle Chris podcast. My Uncle Chris was a real character, a garbage truck driver from South Carolina who is now buried in Panama City alongside the founding families of Panama. He also happens to be responsible for the craziest night of my life. Wild stories about adventure, romance, crime, history, and war intertwine as I share the
Starting point is 00:02:37 tall tales and hard truths that have helped me understand Uncle Chris. Listen now to Uncle Chris on Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Alexis, on a scale of one to 10, how uncool am I gonna sound if I call today's brand new second date update a doozy? A doozy?
Starting point is 00:02:58 Yeah. Oh, that's not even gonna rank. I don't even know where that's at. I mean, it was though. Hey, welcome to the podcast. We're so glad you're here. It was a even know where that time. I mean it was though. Hey welcome to the podcast We're so glad you're here and I was a real homebuck When this woman describes what she quote unquote does for a living I am I am sorry go home Well, that's not even the right thing to say on a scale one to ten. I'm eleven for jealous of her job
Starting point is 00:03:23 Alexis All right, you're gonna hear it in just her job. That's for sure. Alexis. All right, you're going to hear it in just a second. But first, the comments. What do you got, Alexis? All right, Magaldoni said, my seven-year-old absolutely loves your show and asked if he could be the new host and if it could be Brooke and Charles in the morning.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Oh, I like it. He's Charles. I can see them doing that immediately. I mean, Charles feels like we should do a real fancy show. It's the same as Jeffrey. That's a good point. Charles, but he's seven instead. Charles and Jeffrey is the same type is Jeffrey. It should be Charles and Jeffrey. You should be cut out. I agree. I just imagine Jeff and a little seven-year-old in a suit. It's taking over.
Starting point is 00:03:53 And they're both wearing crowns and suits. Yeah and they have the same level of potty humor. Yeah. So I think it'll work. I like it. All right here's your second date update right now. Alright, here's your second date update right now. Second date update. An important part of any blossoming relationship is the first time a woman corrects her man and tells him he messed up. You need to do better. Alright, well this has to happen. It's such a special moment because we need that.
Starting point is 00:04:21 As guys, if left to our own devices, we'll wear wear four gallons of axe body spray and think it smells good. Yes We'll wash our cashmere sweaters in hot water. Oh We love having to correct me Are we not supposed to Goodness for being there to correct us so we can learn and go, oh, that's how it works. So you never have to use your own brain. Well, a lot of women will wait a few dates
Starting point is 00:04:52 to correct their men, but not our listener, Monica. She told the guy he messed up on night one. Yikes. For his benefit, Brooke. No, it's not. It is. That is so wild. That's what happened.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Monica, welcome to the show. Was that intro to your liking, or could I have done better? No, it's not it is. Oh, that's what happened Monica. Welcome to the show Was that intro to your liking or could I have done better? No, you you hit it. Oh That's not just made my day Monica, thank you so much I'm always so curious why someone says a guy messes up and then still wants to call him for another date Oh, that's you know We'll get into that but let's start with what's this guy's name? Who did you go out with? Okay, so I met Isaac online. And he seemed really cool. I like his personality. I like his looks. Definitely. There's a lot of potential there. Yeah, I really
Starting point is 00:05:38 liked him because there's a lot of guys on this app that they will touch you forever. I don't do the back and forth back and forth thing. But he came right down with it. He was like I want to take you out Yeah, and all about action yeah Just living in this weird world of like what are we doing? Yeah, right. That's a good note for men because the more you talk the more opportunities you're giving yourself to say something stupid And we will do that. Exactly. Well said, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:06:06 That's exactly. Now stop talking, Jeff. Okay. Good for Isaac. Now I'm not going to say much more. Just keep going. What happened? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:12 He said, come pick me up and take me to the nice restaurant. So, you know, I got up and my nice little dress thinking, yeah, hey, and then he came, pulled up. He got out. He opened my door. Oh my gosh. And I'm like, oh yeah, he was a very nice I ain't gonna lie he was nice okay so everything's working in his favor right now I'm
Starting point is 00:06:31 wondering where things start to turn and you have to step in and soon as we got the highway I'm like oh no because I see Buffalo Wild Wings. B-Dubs. Oh, I love B-Dubs. Yeah. OK. Wait. Let's go. Are you excited about that or not excited? Not excited at all. I just came from Buffalo Wild Wings two nights ago with my homegirls. OK.
Starting point is 00:06:53 So what am I getting excited for now? OK, so he's taking you there for a date and you're not feeling that. You expected something a little better. OK. A lot better, not a little. OK. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Look, he puts it in park, he gets out of the car, comes around and opens my door like the perfect gentleman he is, and I said, please close my door. Oh no. You said close the door while you're still in the car? I said, please close my door. Well, it's nice you were polite, but. Please close my door.
Starting point is 00:07:21 And I think that he thought I was kidding, because he was like standing there So you're gonna force him to take you somewhere else I don't force anybody do anything I'm letting him know please close my door cuz I don't do Buffalo Wild Wings as a date Food it's a terrible first date It sucks you're in your address and stuff to go there. Also just makes me uncomfortable Yeah, you're expecting uncomfortable Women don't want to like sit and drink beers and watch sports and scream and spill beer everywhere No, I'm gonna tell you what I don't want to do on a date. I don't want to watch a whole grown man lick his fingers
Starting point is 00:07:59 Mhmm Okay That's what I'm saying I'm gonna write that down I thought it was sexy when we sucked on the bone. Don't lick fingers. So wait, did he finally listen to you and shut the door? Yes he did. He shut the door. I said I got three choices for you.
Starting point is 00:08:14 And he picked a nice cocktail bar and I said okay cool. So I thought okay he didn't know right? He didn't know. I told him let's go. Awesome. And he adapted and was he offended? He seemed offended by the way. He seemed more confused than offended. Okay, that's okay. That's just standard, you know, mental head space for men, just constantly.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Right, right. How was it though when you got to the cocktail bar, were you able to still keep a good energy together? Yeah, he asked me questions about what had just happened. I'm like, you know, I'm a lady for real. I want silverware, I don't want plastic utensils. I'm like, yo, I'm a lady for real. I want silverware. I don't want plastic utensils. I am with you on that one.
Starting point is 00:08:48 So he was like, OK, I never thought of that. So I'm teaching him what a real lady likes. I'm sure he actually appreciated the education on how to properly woo a woman. How do you know he appreciated it? Because he's not calling you back. Oh, yeah. Oh, now that's a good question.
Starting point is 00:09:03 He very appreciated it. And that's why I'm calling you. See, now that's a good question. He's very appreciated. And that's why I'm calling you. See, I would be insulted. See, I'm thinking that's the reason he wasn't getting second dates before, and now he's got it down. Oh, she taught him too well. Yeah. She taught him too well. That's a good point.
Starting point is 00:09:17 That's what a lot of women get upset when they're like, oh, great, I cleaned up my guy just for the next one to come and, like, swipe him up. He's taking ten girls with that cocktail bar. We're gonna get down to the nitty gritty because I wanna know, because I think I did everything right and I taught him how to do everything right. Okay. And so now let's get it right. I scoped him into the man I want, now call me back. You deserve a medal and definitely a second date here.
Starting point is 00:09:39 But what if he feels like you're too high maintenance? Then screw that guy. He doesn't want a real woman. Then you'll lay into him, go full hard against him, right? That's where you come in. You do your thing. No, I just think that if you have some boundaries like that, they should be established before the date, not when you're in the middle.
Starting point is 00:09:56 But look, he's the one that asked me out and I accepted, right? Yeah. So you're going to learn me on the date and that's what he did. If he didn't like what he learned, he could at least respond it. You have me on a whole radio show to find out what's wrong with you. No, I can't wait to hear this. I can't wait to hear it too. So hopefully he picks up. We're gonna come back.
Starting point is 00:10:18 We'll call Isaac for you and figure out why in the world he would not be calling back a classy woman like yourself, Monica. Yeah, she's a cloth napkin type of lady. That's right. Let's get some answers when we do your second date update right after this. Hold on. If you're just joining us, we've been speaking to a true hero. Her name is Monica, who heroically swooped in and saved her date, Isaac, from pulling a total rookie move. When he tried to bring her to Buffalo Wild Wings for their date. And that wasn't going to fly with her, so Monica refused to get out of his car in order to show him,
Starting point is 00:11:01 this is not where you take a lady of substance. She put on a dress, okay? Yeah, they definitely had a miscommunication over what a dinner date looks like. But instead they ended up at a nice cocktail bar, and they did it the proper way, where she actually discovered Isaac's a pretty good guy, has some gentlemanly qualities, something to work with. So the question is why is he not reaching out for cocktails round two? Monica is it possible that maybe he saw your helpful sensei teaching abilities as a little bit condescending That's a possibility. I just wish he would have expressed that to me personally
Starting point is 00:11:39 Yeah, you seem like a person who can take criticism You seem like a person who can take criticism, constructive criticism. Of course I can. If I could ditch it, I definitely could take it. Yeah, that's right. That's a good attitude to have. It doesn't happen often on this show. Yeah, I know. Would you like to criticize her constructively before we do this call? Is that where you're going? She's doing great. She knows who she is, she knows what she wants, and she wants to go out with Isaac. Okay, so Brooke, you're scared of her and you're afraid to say anything controversial. No, I think Isaac will be scared and it will be afraid to say no so I
Starting point is 00:12:07 think you're getting a date I also like to scare men yeah we're gonna intimidate this guy into saying yes to a date but let's see what he has to say if he picks up the phone but here we go I'm not sure if he picks up the phone, but here we go. Hello? Hey, is this Isaac? Yeah, who's this? Hey man, we're a radio show. You're on it right now. It's called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Welcome to the show, Isaac! Hey, good morning! Why is the radio show calling me? Well, it's kind of a good morning. Why is the radio show calling me? Uh... Well, it's kind of a good reason. We do a segment on this show. It's called the Second Date Update. Wait!
Starting point is 00:12:53 It sounds like you haven't heard it, but this is a segment where we help out our listeners who've been on a date with someone, and afterwards they're not getting a call back to go on a second one. I think I have heard of it. I think I've seen this online somewhere. Oh yeah. We go viral sometimes. Yeah, a lot of them are viral on TikTok. They're on there. You can follow us at BrokenJeffer if you want to,
Starting point is 00:13:12 no pressure, but basically the reason that we're calling you is there's a woman named Monica who asked us to get a hold of you. Hey. Yeah, I met Monica, yeah, right. We know you. Sounds like you guys could have had a great day. What did she what did she tell you? What did she tell you? Good question. Okay. Well, I guess the general recap of what we heard from her is you picked her up. Then you took her to Buffalo Wild Wings, which she politely redirected over to a cocktail bar Well politely redirected it would be wrong
Starting point is 00:13:55 She's our friend so we know we're not gonna be rude. Well, I mean I wasn't rude either She just simply kind of barks closed my door At first I just stood there like, what do you mean? Are you like, there's a bug about to get inside my car? I can see that, yeah. Oh my God, close the door. I was like, okay. So I closed the door and I go back to my side of the car,
Starting point is 00:14:15 I get in and she explains to me like, hey, I don't do Buffalo Wild Wings. And I was like, all right. I mean, the reason why I chose the Buffalo Wild Wings and I was like yeah Alright, I mean the reason why I chose the Buffalo Wild Wings because in these new dating apps It's better to start out something very casual another date. We graduate to something a little better But wait, did you explain all of that to her what you just told us why you chose it? No, I didn't explain any of that to her and also didn't tell her this, I own that Buffalo Wild Wings. You own it? Wait, what?
Starting point is 00:14:46 Oh, you're a franchisee? You're gonna take her to your own job though? That's hard. That's not supposed to be impressive, Alexis. Yeah, except you get free food. Yeah, but guys, he's a business owner. Eh, who cares? Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:58 So look, I'm gonna be honest, I'm still a gentleman, she wanted to go somewhere a little bit better, so we made our way to this great cocktail lounge that I know. So what changed your mind to where now you're not reaching out to her for a second date? Okay, so while we're kind of enjoying each other's company
Starting point is 00:15:14 the cocktail bar, I started asking her a little bit more about her life. And of course, we get to like, what do we do for a living? She kind of skated around it for a while. So she came to an answer I've never heard in my entire life. What is it? She says she's a stay at home daughter. A stay at home daughter? That's amazing. What does that mean? She's gotta be joking. Like that's a joke. I love that. No, it's not a joke. That's what she told me. She said her occupation at 31 years old
Starting point is 00:15:45 is that she's a stay-at-home daughter. Dang. I'm jealous. Michael's supposed to be a stay-at-home girlfriend. I mean, that is a real fancy way to say you're unemployed and live with mom and dad. OK, so you were turned off because she doesn't have enough ambition or drive or what?
Starting point is 00:15:59 A drop of ambition. Not a drop. Uh-oh. All right. We got to cut this right here. OK. I don't know what's going on. All right. We got to cut this right here. Okay. I don't know what's going on. All right. I don't want to make her mad, but Isaac, that's Monica on the other line listening to this conversation. Clearly it's Monica. Clearly. Maybe she's on her parents landline. You better watch yourself. You supposed to be with me here. Okay, Monica, clearly you want to jump in and say something.
Starting point is 00:16:28 So go ahead and talk to Isaac. Hello, Isaac. How are you? Oh, hi, Monica from your mom's couch. How you doing? Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Let me tell you something, Isaac. I don't know what to disrespect about. I thought we got along pretty well. On our date, we had a good time. I didn't know you had a problem with my daily occupation.
Starting point is 00:16:50 What is the problem with you? Oh, that's amazing. Wait, are your parents like elderly? Do you stay home and take care of them? Is that what's going on? Or just rich? No, they're perfectly healthy. They just take care of me.
Starting point is 00:17:02 I'm their baby girl and I always will be. Monica, guess who else is perfectly healthy you are Something I am perfectly healthy. Yes, I am as you can see and if I have to get a job I would but guess what? I don't have to I'm sorry. Don't you want a job? Don't you want your own career? Don't you have your own dreams and ambitions? Yes, my dream and my ambition is sitting at home,
Starting point is 00:17:34 planning my day, going and doing what I have to do, and finding a man that's going to take care of me so my cameras can stop. Oh. So that's your goal. Brooke, it sounds like you're judging her there and she explicitly asked you not to do so. It's really hard not to. Why? Because you would never date a guy who is doing what you do. You are exactly right and they shouldn't a man shouldn't
Starting point is 00:17:58 do what I do. Yeah, we're the providers, Brooke. My role is to be taken care of. That's my love language. I love to be taken care of Imagine being a man going and meeting your parents for the first time What's your dowry sir, well Isaac now that she's explained this a little bit more, you're probably more receptive to going out with her one more time. Look, look, I wish Monica the best. It's just not the best with me. Oh man. Monica, I hope you find a guy slash simp that will take care of you. What?
Starting point is 00:18:41 I don't think so Isaac. You're gonna take me out and that's just the way it's gonna be Don't want to do any of the work a boss doesn't work yo That is the problem y'all just don't understand And clearly I don't understand being a whole business owner and want to take me to his little budget wing stop. Oh! You know what? I'm going to be honest with you, Monica. See, there's a difference.
Starting point is 00:19:13 There's a difference between a boss and a leader. You're not a leader. Oh. I never said I was a leader. I never said that. You're a bossy. I'm a boss. I am a leader.
Starting point is 00:19:23 I'm a leader. OK, then that's alright then. But you could have been a man and leave my ass and told me and tell me that. You could have told me that. Why you dodging and running? No one's dodging or running. What I'm doing is ghosting. Bye, b****. Oh! We're gonna bleep that out. Okay. That he broke?
Starting point is 00:19:45 That was uncalled for. Yikes. That's just mean. I don't need him. I don't need him anyway. You don't. You guys both need each other. He hung up, by the way.
Starting point is 00:19:53 You need to get a job. No, you don't. Yes, you do. Don't listen to Brooke. You know what you need to do is you need to go to Buffalo Wild Wings and spend your parents' money over there. Oh my God. No, I'm not going in no more.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Look, I'm going to the competition. I feel like you're gonna be on the phone a lot with your expectations for dating. Well, that's okay. Look, I got a lot of time, boo boo. Oh yeah. That's a good point. And are your parents hiring for any open roles in your family? Oh, please.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Because I would love to be a part of that. No, they're good. It's Jeffery in the morning. In our new podcast, Everybody's Business, we talk about the business news that concerns everybody. From Bloomberg Business Week, I'm Stacey Bannock-Smith. And I'm Max Chafkin. Each week, we unpack what is happening on Main Street
Starting point is 00:20:38 and Wall Street, all the streets. WrestleMania has taken over the US economy. The poetry that executives write on LinkedIn. A little actual magic in our underrated story of the week. The single greatest marketing campaign the music business has ever seen. I decided to ask people how they felt about the penny going away. Listen to Everybody's Business wherever you get your podcasts. Well, hey, we all learned a new job today.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Stay at home daughter. That is not a job Alexis. I'm applying right now, texting my mom. I give you two days back home with your parents. Are you kidding me? Half of a day at your mom's house. Isaac did not like it. Obviously Brooke does not respect it either.
Starting point is 00:21:18 But okay, Brooke, let me ask you this. Would it have changed how you felt if Monica was 21 years old compared to 31? Would you give her more grace? No, if she's not going to school, she should be working. No, that's right. Brooke believes you should start working at age six in one of her overseas factories. So parents, if your lazy first grader is still mooching off of you as a stay at home child,
Starting point is 00:21:41 then text in to 78592. Brooke will whip him into shape. Let me give you some parenting tips. Yes, and if not parenting tips, we can hopefully at least give you a little bit of dating help. You can email the show, we can call that person who's not calling you back,
Starting point is 00:21:54 and go check out all of our second day podcasts, wherever you get yours, they're up at Brooke and Jeffrey. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Just like great shoes, great books take you places through unforgettable love stories and into conversations with characters you'll never forget.
