Hey, I'm Jay Shetty, and my latest interview is with Mel Robbins.
Work has been seen as the number one cause of stress.
How can the let them theory help?
As you notice the stress come up, Jay, you're simply going to say, let them. You have no idea right now how much time and energy is being wasted because of other people's behavior.
It's like a death by a thousand cuts.
Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
You know that saying, women like bad boys?
Oh, yeah.
Everyone's heard it, but is it true?
Yeah.
It's not true because I'm going to be bad at everything.
I don't think that's a bad thing.
Well, I mean, there is different types of bad boys.
That's a true statement.
Like you have the Jay Walkers and the Jay Stalkers.
Oh, my gosh.
Both kind of bad, but where's the scale?
Where's the line?
I want to know because we're talking to a
guy today for a second date who's an admitted smuggler what i'm gonna call him bad boy james
let's talk to him james how you doing i'm doing all right how about you guys wait are you like
are you like a current smuggler are we talking ex-convict here it was kind of unclear from your
email like i'm assuming rare priceless artifacts that you're smuggling into the country oh my gosh Are you like a current smuggler or are we talking ex-convict here? It was kind of unclear from your email.
I'm assuming rare, priceless artifacts that you're smuggling into the country.
Oh, my gosh.
Well, it's more like smuggling candy into a movie theater.
Maybe we got a little blown up.
Oh, so it's worse than I thought.
It's not worse.
Yeah, I'm with you on that one.
You carry a big purse, too?
Yeah, that's right, a huge one.
You'll put the popcorn in there.
Absolutely. I got some M the popcorn in there. Absolutely.
I have some M&Ms and some rare diamonds.
There's a darkness inside of you, and I kind of like it.
But let's talk to you about the woman that you went out with.
What's her name?
Her name's Tara.
All right, Tara.
What dark web website did you meet her on?
What dark web website?
We'll keep that secret for now, you know.
Oh, okay.
All right.
But it was online.
Yeah, we met online.
We met online.
And right away when I saw her profile, I was like, she had this just gorgeous smile.
Oh, that's nice.
Yeah, there was just something about her.
And so we decided to go on a date, and we're trying to figure out what to do.
And we're like, oh, let's do dinner and a movie.
But we decided we'd reverse it.
You know, like, we'd go see a movie first, then go to dinner afterwards.
Whoa!
Breaking the day game.
Oh, my God.
You are bad.
You are bad.
This is another bad boy thing for Jeffrey.
It's not the rules.
You can't do that.
You don't play by anybody's rules.
It's the time.
Tell me more.
First the candy.
How does this even work?
It was a matinee, I take it.
Yeah, a matinee, Jeffrey.
Was it, James?
You have to walk me through this.
It wasn't a matinee or anything.
It was a regular time movie just because, you know,
sometimes I get nervous and then you can have that like as a fallback, you know?
Okay.
What do you mean as a fallback?
Well, like if you don't know what to say next or things get maybe a little awkward,
you just pause it and you just be like, hey, so the movie, you know,
and you just kind of have that fallback. Oh, okay. So now you have a shared experience to say next or things get maybe a little awkward, positive, you just be like, hey, so the movie, you know, and you just kind of have that.
So now you have a shared experience to talk about during dinner.
It's actually that's actually pretty smart.
Yeah.
So tell us about it.
How did the date go with the movie?
Well, it was cool because in her profile, she mentioned one thing that she really likes chocolate.
So I decided that I would sneak in, you know, some chocolate or whatever, like that's the smuggling part. So wait till the movie starts and I kind of whisper like, hey, check it out.
I got some chocolate, like bust out some M&M's and stuff.
Dude, that's actually really cool.
I'm sure she loved that.
Okay.
Yeah, it was cool.
It was cool.
It actually, maybe it almost kind of backfired a little bit because like she wasn't quite talking as much because she was eating M&M's and stuff.
Oh my God.
She's my type of girl.
I have a question.
I have a question for the ladies in the room.
Does it look, I hate to say this word, does it look cheap that he smuggled candy when
he could have bought candy at the concession?
Read my mind.
Really?
Is that, is it cheap?
Oh, I don't think so.
I think it looks smart.
I think if you're smuggling, bring in something better, like Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
Oh, something that's not available.
I mean, I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Okay, so it's not a big deal.
Yeah, I mean, he said that Tara seemed into it, seemed to like that as a little bit.
Sure, that's true.
That's all that matters.
So after the movie, how did dinner go?
Dinner was great.
It was like, I felt that's really where things kind of started to take stride and, you know,
be really good.
We just had lots of great conversation and we're just sharing a lot about our lives,
getting to know each other and everything.
Okay.
And then the waiter came around to take like our order and I ordered.
You were like, bring the dinner first appetizers at the end.
I'm bad.
We don't play this game.
And we want M&M's.
You too.
What happened when the waiter came?
Did something weird happen?
So,
I mean,
maybe,
I don't know,
but I,
so I ordered a hamburger.
Okay.
And she was kind of like,
you're ordering a hamburger.
Okay.
You know,
just kind of. Yeah. A little bit. And I was like, yeah, you know, so I don't know if she was kind of like, you're ordering a hamburger? Okay. You know, just kind of questioning it a little bit.
And I was like, yeah.
So I don't know if she was one of those meat snob kind of people or like a vegetarian maybe.
Or, you know, I didn't really want to get into it because I didn't want to make things awkward.
Or maybe she was just planning to share your fries.
Yeah.
She finally came.
She's side eyeing your plate.
So I avoided that kind of awkward moment.
And then the waiter brought the food and everything.
And she had like this pasta dish
with what looked like a bunch of vegetables
in it. I don't know. I'm not really that
into veggies at all. I think
last time I had a vegetable, I was like 11 years old.
My mom put like brown sugar on my
squash or something. Oh, you're one of those.
Did you say the last time you had a vegetable?
Are your organs working
okay?
Just fine. I'm not a vegetable guy at all.
I just, ugh.
Hey, bro.
You have a zero-fiber diet.
How does that work afterwards?
Your body needs them, but we'll get into that on, like, an off-air subject.
So dinner ends and everything's still going just fine, really.
And then I kind of do the whole, should we go back to my place?
And I just got shut down, like, cold shut down.
Oh, no.
Oh, boy.
Yeah.
And then since then, i've texted her a couple
times and haven't heard anything back at all so just kind of coming to you guys now because i'm
scratching my head i don't know what's up i mean that's a pretty long date already like a movie
and dinner and then hang out again yeah it's kind of clingy are you texting her from one of your
smuggler burner phones or is this from your regular number with my burner phones of course
then i don't
know what's going on let's try and figure this out for you man the stolen chocolate game is you
know we're gonna be careful yeah we'll find out if that's it we're gonna play a song come back
we'll call terror for you and try and get you a second date update okay all right sounds good
hold on second date update james you know I have to do it. What?
I have to play the song.
Song.
Because James is a self-confessed bad boy.
Okay.
Still on this.
What you going to do, James?
He doesn't play by the rules.
No. When he does dinner and a movie date, he goes rogue and says, hey, we're doing movie first.
He smuggles candy into that theater.
And then when they tell everybody to turn your cell phones off,
James only turns his to vibrate.
But that's not the rules, Dan.
No, he doesn't care.
He's a rebel.
He's bad boy James.
And all this rebel wants right now is another date with a hottie that he met
named Tara.
James, I bet you cross the street even when that little red
handed thing is flashing at you, don't you?
Oh, you know it. I'm a jaywalker,
you know. That's right.
He still looks both ways
before he crosses.
Maybe only one way.
I mean, he's bad. He's not an idiot.
But I think we should all try
and chant a little bit of bad boy right now
when we call Tara and convince her to go out with him one more time.
Jeffrey, if you keep this up,
Tara's not going to know who you're talking about.
Like, if you talk about James as a bad boy,
you sound like a really nice dude, James.
Yeah, I think I am.
Okay.
Yeah, I mean.
Maybe we're getting a little out of control with the, I don't know,
but it's fun.
I think Jess is a little hyper today.
I think that's all.
No, the darkest souls always seem the nicest on the outside.
Yeah, that's what you want to tell yourself.
Okay.
Don't tell her that, though, when you're trying to get her to go back out with me.
Okay.
We'll save that for the end.
All right.
We're going to dial Tara's number.
You ready, man?
I'm ready.
Okay.
Here we go hi it's tara hey tara how you doing my name is jeff from the radio show brooke and jeffrey in
the morning you're calling from the radio yeah were you expecting my call? No.
Okay.
Hi.
What's going on?
What is this?
This is a segment that we do called the Second Date Update.
It's where we help our listeners reach out to people that they've gone out with recently,
but they're having trouble getting a hold of them again.
I feel like I've heard of this before. I feel like I've heard of this show.
Oh, that's awesome, Terri.
Look it, all of a sudden, she's our favorite. Yeah. I mean, I wouldn heard of this show. Oh, that's awesome, Tara. Look, all of a sudden, she's
our favorite.
Because I wouldn't go that far.
I've heard of it. We have low standards.
It's fine. Yeah, I know. That's still a lot to us.
Sorry, I know. We do sound kind of thirsty
right now. We're not the only ones.
Hey, good. I like that.
It's true. We are calling on behalf of one of our
listeners named James.
Oh, James.
Yeah.
Yep.
I did go on a date with James, yes.
Okay. Okay.
Okay.
What did you think of James?
Just like overall, nice guy, kind of a bad boy, somewhere in between.
What's the scale?
He's definitely a sweetie.
A sweetie. Exactly. Sweeties are scale? He's definitely a sweetie. A sweetie.
Exactly.
Sweeties are some of the worst candies out there.
I see what you're saying.
That's what he smuggled.
Oh, my God.
Sorry, we're doing an inside joke.
You thought he was really nice, at least?
Yeah.
Yes.
He's definitely a sweet soul.
That's good.
Most people like that.
I mean, it is good, but it's usually what you call somebody who's like you're a little brother or something.
Not necessarily someone you want to date.
Yeah, like a sweet guy.
Yeah, you're right.
I'm curious, what did James tell you guys?
He just gave us an overview that there was dinner in a movie, and he surprised you by bringing in some M&Ms from the outside.
Which, you know.
From the outside. Yeah. you know. From the outside.
Yeah.
I'm in a prison room.
Some, yeah.
Some contraband.
How'd he get them in?
I don't, wait a minute.
Yes, that's true.
He did.
He did bring in some M&Ms, which actually are my favorite movie candies.
Aw.
Aw, sweet.
That's perfect, man.
So he scored with that part, right?
Yeah, that was great.
You know, I love to bring in my own snacks too like no
super thoughtful but it's just kind of this other weird thing i don't know but he also brought um
well what he said was he like kind of whispered like it was a secret but he's like i also brought
drinks in and i was thinking we're gonna kind of get some liquid courage here and and kind of
liven things up maybe we had like little airplane shots mini bottles or whatever i thought we're gonna kind of get some liquid courage here and and kind of liven things up maybe we had like
little airplane shots mini bottles or whatever i thought we're gonna spike our sodas or something
yeah that'd be perfect i never thought of that that sounds so james right now yeah bad boy james
well the funny thing was he had a jacket like one of those jackets with the inside pockets and he
opens up his inside pocket like he's about to pull out a flask. He pulls out two warm, first of all,
Capri Suns.
You know those drinks that go in kids'
lunchables?
We're very familiar with Capri Suns.
Anybody that doesn't like Capri Suns
is a communist.
What?
Did that just set you off?
Why are you doing that?
Are you on this call right now?
Is that you? I don't know. What do you want me to bring? Okay. Did that just set you off? Why are you doing that? James, are you on this call right now?
Is that you?
I don't know.
What do you want me to bring?
Okay.
Yeah, hold on.
Why are you being so defensive?
Yeah, Tara, that obviously is James on the other line.
He's been listening.
You're supposed to wait, James, but I guess, you know, you don't listen to the rules, so you can jump in whenever you want.
I don't know what you like.
I mean, just come on.
Wow, okay.
First of all, hi.
Hi.
Hi.
I don't have any problem with Capri Suns.
It was a great kind of throwback.
It was just an interesting choice of all. I just didn't, I wasn't expecting Capri Suns.
Who would expect Capri Suns?
Okay, I mean, I don't know.
I thought it was pretty cool myself.
Yeah, I mean. Wild Cherry Rush, baby. Wild Cherry Rush. Wild Cherry Rush. Hold the, so. okay i mean i don't know i thought it was pretty cool myself yeah i mean wild cherry rush wild
cherry rush wild cherry rush hold the answer cherry rush stop okay that sounds delicious
tara we're asking you why you're not calling james back it's because he brought capri suns
and you thought that's not god was gonna be it is that really the reason no no definitely not it
wasn't just the capri suns it was just there were some things james that i felt like maybe okay when we went to dinner and you ordered
i mean that that menu was pretty great like they had some good things on there
and i just kind of felt like your palate was maybe a little um simpler or childish she ordered a
burger yeah i don't i don't want to say...
I don't know. I love food, and I like
people that like to have fine dining experiences,
and a plain hamburger
with ketchup? I don't know.
I'm starting to get it. You know what, Tara?
It feels like you were treating me a lot like my
parents did after college, and they just told me I needed
to just grow up, okay?
How did you...
How did you make that joke, James?
She's talking like my mom right now.
You're exactly right.
I did feel a little bit like your parents.
I had to tell you to put your napkin on your lap.
I mean, who does that?
Why do you have to be reminded
to put your napkin on your lap?
You had to tell him to put his napkin on his lap?
Yes, there was, like,
stuff dripping all over his lap,
and he just...
Oh, my God.
Dude, that's, like, the first thing you do when you sit down.
What's dripping? The ketchup?
So it's like less of a bad boy and more like a, just like a childish.
It's like a boy.
Boy.
Okay.
Just a boy.
Just a boy.
Yeah.
No, and then.
It would have been okay, but then, James, like, here's a hot tip.
You don't have to show people your pictures on your photo album of all your Lego creations.
I gotta say, that wasn't exactly a turn-on.
No.
Whoa.
You were showing her pictures of Lego sets?
You know what, Jinger?
Yes.
Come down off your pedestal there, okay?
FYI, those Lego sets are really hard to build, all right?
Yes, they are.
I know I can't do the 14 plus yet.
I'm just more comfortable with the 12 and under, all right?
I thought you were talking about the adult Lego sets that cost like hundreds of dollars.
Someday I'm going to get to those.
I'll be an expert, I'm sure, because I try really hard.
But that day's not today.
I'll get to those.
Well, see, Tara, look at that.
He has goals for himself.
Okay?
He wants to one day work his way up to the 14 and over Lego sets.
Yeah.
And maybe he'll get to do something, lucky lady.
I can't be the girl that's waiting around for him to get to the Millennium Falcon set.
You know, I don't I don't want to get there.
I mean, James, you can kind of see from her perspective how you came off as a little immature.
What?
Right.
You know, if I wanted to get nagged like this so bad, y'all, I would just go upstairs.
Go upstairs?
Upstairs?
Yeah.
What's upstairs, James?
My mom.
No!
No! Oh, dude. Are you serious right now? My mom. No! No!
Oh, dude.
Are you serious right now?
You live with your parents?
Yeah, just for now.
Listen, I got laid off, not fired,
not that you would know the difference,
but I got laid off.
Yeah.
That's all right.
That happens.
That happens.
It's just all of the things put together
that's hard to stomach.
It's not living with your parents
that I'm sure is the issue.
Right, Tara?
James, you told me you had roommates.
You did not say that your roommates were your parents.
They are my roommates.
I get the whole basement to myself.
I can just play on my Legos everywhere like that.
I can have friends whenever I want.
It's only temporary.
It's only temporary.
Everyone's got to leave by 8, but other than that.
It was your mom that bought the Capri Suns that you brought to the movie theater, wasn't it?
You probably took them from the pantry.
You guys think I'm a bad boy?
That is a bad boy thing I did straight out of her purse while she was napping.
Didn't even know.
Oh, wow.
Dang.
It's weird that she keeps them in her purse just in case you get thirsty.
In case she gets thirsty.
I'm taking you to the doctor tomorrow.
James, you're a fun-loving guy.
Thanks.
Okay, are you guys kind of getting the picture here?
Do you see this?
Like, this is pretty much the reason why I didn't call him back.
Okay.
But there's always chances for redemption with a bad boy.
You can always reform them.
And this is going to be your opportunity because we'd like to send you on another date with bad boy James.
Lovingly, I don't want a bad boy.
I'm really more interested in a man,
so I think that it's going to be a pass for me.
But I think that maybe James should try dating someone much younger,
like much more on his level, like maybe a high schooler.
Oh, wait, that's not...
That's illegal.
Tara, now you're the bad boy here.
I don't have time for you anyways, Tara.
I got Legos to build.
Whatever.
That's a bad boy right there.
You show her, Jay.
He's not even going to follow the instructions.
