All right, we're starting off your week with a brand new episode today. Yay! New second date, and I got to say, this girl's hack for figuring out if this guy was trustworthy or not
Starting point is 00:02:45 is probably going to be used by other people. Yeah, for sure. Good one. I'm smart. It's a little on the immoral side, just a tad. though not enough not enough not enough no okay not enough i wouldn't do it yeah but before we get to it comments we love to feature yours yeah heavenly said my town was out of internet for over 12 hours oh and the only thing i wanted to do was listen to y'all's podcast and it did not disappoint
Starting point is 00:03:10 it's just a 12 hour wait what do you do for 12 hours without internet life's gone oh my god i don't know yeah i have to sleep the whole time i guess i don't know what i do Yeah. All right, your brand new second date starts right now. Second date update. It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning, and if you didn't know, you can always hear our second date updates on Apple, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts, millions of people download them a month.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Yeah, we do. I like this. It's just the second date commercial happening right now. That's right. Brooke says you should download it too or else. You don't want to know what the or else is. You may enjoy it. Oh, wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Well, oh, God. Whatever it is. I will kiss you. It's in your best interest not to defy Brooke, but we do have a listener on the phone right now who's asked us for a second date. And I didn't even get to read his email ahead of time, so I don't know much about it. Other than his name is Rick. And hopefully I'm pronouncing that right. Rick, is it Rick?
Starting point is 00:04:11 Am I saying that right? Of course, yep. I think it's the only way to pronounce it. I feel like he's not emphasizing the C enough in your name. Yeah. And it could be with a silent R. So we don't know. But let's get right into your date.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Tell us about the woman you met. What's her name? So I met a girl named Brenda. I was trying to find, just find a way to meet people. And my friend told me to join a running club. So I joined this running club. I've heard a lot of people doing that. I haven't.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Yeah. It was really popular over summer to do that. Fun, fun. Now it's not anymore. Running is short-lived. No, I'm just saying late to the trend. Oh. I think it's a fun
Starting point is 00:04:50 I mean it's one A good way to get healthy So you're gonna get some positive out of it And then usually people meet up for beers afterwards Yeah you meet at a brewery to start And then end there yeah Did that happen on your date, Rick? No, there was no drinking at running club
Starting point is 00:05:04 Oh Oh, this is like a serious one Yeah I never heard of that Boring Yeah It's not like a track scene too healthy So how did you and Brenda
Starting point is 00:05:12 Hit it off? We met at the back of the line We were jogging while everyone else was running. Oh, that's kind of funny. You were the lazy ones who weren't taking it very seriously. You can say that. Well, they're just slow, Jeff. You don't have to speed shame them, okay?
Starting point is 00:05:30 They showed up. They're not that lazy. Yeah, that's not sure. I feel like telling them he slow is more shameful. Yeah, people know when they're slow. I'm slow. It's fine. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:39 All right. So what did you and Brenda talk about at the back of the line? Well, we kind of bonded on the fact that we were in running. club but hated running club It's so right It's like the cool kids in the back of the bus Why don't even sign up for this dumb thing? Why are we here?
Starting point is 00:05:57 So I ended up getting her number which was cool so we started texting And then I Worked up the courage to ask her out Cute so how long Of a friendship did you have before you Asked her out? Maybe two months if I had to guess somewhere around there
Starting point is 00:06:13 Wow that's like real You're a slow runner and a slow mover romantically. So that's your style. I like it. But I bet you were so nervous because you know you don't want to screw up run club that you hate. Good point, Brooke. You're going to have to pick up the paste of waiter at practice. Exactly. So what did you do? I mean, you went on on an official date after this, right? Yeah, I didn't want to go somewhere too fancy, but I also didn't want to go to like a Denny's or something. So I picked the, like, middle of the road Italian restaurant that I've been to before and I knew the food was good.
Starting point is 00:06:46 You could say Olive Garden, it's fine. I was going to say, bro. I mean, we all love it. We're all family. No, it was definitely better than Olive Garden. Olive Garden is like the fast food of Italian restaurant. Oh, hey, wait a minute. We love that, Alfredo.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Yeah, but we love fast food, so it's okay. Yeah, that's true. So you went to the macaroni bar and grill, and how was it there? Oh, God. We're just teasing you. We don't care about the actual Italian restaurant you went to. You obviously went to, like, a local Italian restaurant. It's not important, guys.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Yeah, that's true. We're more interested. in your bond and connection with Brenda while you were there? I feel like the night was going really good. Our conversation was good. I felt like we clicked and at some point, you know how they serve
Starting point is 00:07:28 bread and they have like a little fabric thing underneath it? A napkin? Yeah. We're familiar with napkins. Well, it's like a doily, I think they call it. Oh, fancy little. Yeah, I can see that. Oh, yeah. We were still thinking of Olive Garden.
Starting point is 00:07:44 What happened with the doily? so there was underneath it there was like a half ripped it seemed like a breakup note oh my god like a dear john letter it was strange it was like only like half of it though and it was kind of smudgy but you could tell it was i don't know it was like a breakup note as the only way i could describe it so was that like a fun thing to talk about on your date no i mean i thought it was kind of funny in a way but she did not really react at all It changed the vibe for sure Because I went to the bathroom And then when I got back from the bathroom
Starting point is 00:08:20 I felt like the air had changed She like didn't want dessert She's like oh okay you could just take me home Like real matter of fact Oh no Oh God I mean do you think it reminded her of a past breakup And it made her sad
Starting point is 00:08:36 I don't know if that's what it was I'm just like guessing here But something happened That she didn't like and she kind of like ended it. Well, clearly she understood that they sat you down at the breakup table inside the restaurant. Either that or she was upset. You took her to a restaurant where they don't clean the tables very well.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Yeah, good point. Jeez. Yeah, I mean, that sounds like it's kind of like a bad omen for your first date. But that's not your fault. Like, I think you can recover from that. It's not like you wrote her to know. I'd read it. I'd try to find out who's a couple is.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And I was the waiter. I'm with Alexis. It'd be juicy gossip to talk about. You could bond over it. Like, as we're starting, somebody else ended. What was the ride home, like, in the car? Awkward, quiet. Like, I was trying to make conversation, and it was just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Like I said, the air changed. The vibe was awful. Okay. Interesting. Have you seen her at run club since? No, I've been back there a few times. I've called her. I've texted her on Facebook.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Oh, my God. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah, she is. No more. Yeah. She's definitely avoiding you. A lot of forms of communication, brother.
Starting point is 00:09:42 And now we're going to call her He left smudge notes at every table that she was going to be at for every restaurant she was about to visit Oh, well, I mean, we may not know exactly what it is, but we are committed to helping you figure it out, Rick, because we're going to call Brenda in just a few minutes here and try and get you your second date update right after this. Hold on. Second date update. Can you get blocked by somebody else's tragic breakup? That's funny. Oh, my gosh. That's what our listener, Rick, is wondering, because he took a woman named Brenda out to a mid-tier Italian restaurant, his description, not ours.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Yeah. But at the bottom of their bread bowl, they found part of a breakup note that a previous couple had apparently left underneath the doily, which Rick found kind of amusing. Yeah. But after that, he says the whole mood suddenly shifted, and Brenda asked if he could take her back home. Yeah. She's been avoiding him at all costs. Yes. Yeah, so weird.
Starting point is 00:10:44 And take her home, not in the fun, hey, let's go back to my place. And I'll show you my fish tank kind of way, the I'm ready for the night to be over right now kind of way. You know how to get to a girl. We love seeing fish takes, Josh. Oh, yeah. Any sort of pet. You're all in. Yeah, but like Brooke said, the real red flag is she stops showing up to run club, which I guess she wasn't really a huge fan of anyway, but still something's going on.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Yeah. to make her totally disappear and we're trying to figure that out. Rick, that's got to be it. Like, I remember going to see, do you remember Jennifer Aniston's movie breakup? I don't know if you guys remember it, but I went with a date
Starting point is 00:11:22 and we both left being like, this isn't going to work. Oh, really? I don't know. It just like brought up all these feelings of like, I'm really settling right now. They do argue a lot of movies. Does something bad happen in the breakup?
Starting point is 00:11:36 I mean, that's the whole purpose. Her husband's Vaughn fighting the whole movie. Yeah, yeah. Well, I think maybe that's how she fell. The point is, Rick, we don't want any of those bad vibes to happen on this call. We're going to go to bat for you. Are you ready to do this? I'm ready as I'm ever going to be.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Yeah, because you're not the guy from that breakup letter. You're a great guy that deserves a chance. As far as you know. Oh, wait. That's not very reassuring, Rick. I know it's a joke. That's it. Now is the time of saying.
Starting point is 00:12:03 You're joking, yeah? Of course I'm joking, guys. Come on. All right. You have to be sure before we do these. I still don't believe them. Yeah, we'll find out. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Hello? Hey, is this Brenda? Yeah, this is who's calling? Who's calling is a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning? Hello, good morning. Okay. Hi. Hi.
Starting point is 00:12:35 It's not a normal thing. We get it, Brenda. Yeah, okay. Did I win something or what's going on? Yeah. It's always the hopeful response, isn't it, Jeffrey? Yeah, it's tough when people ask that because I don't know the right way to respond other than to say, no, not really. This is a segment we do called a second date update. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:56 We try to help out a listener who's gone out on a date with somebody recently, but they're not getting a call back for a second one. We try to help step in and figure out the reason why. If there is a reason. Yeah. This guy that reached out about you, his name is Rick. Oh. We're trying to help Rick figure out what's gone on since your date because he says he hasn't even seen you at Run Club. I mean, yeah, I haven't been there.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Did you quit because of him? Yeah. All right. So it sounds like this isn't just a coincidence. You're actually trying to avoid him. I am avoiding him, yes. All right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:40 So if you could help explain, like, why you're trying to avoid him, because Rick is pretty clueless. I mean, we had been talking for quite a while at Run Club, and I thought he was different than other guys, but after our date, I don't think he is. What? What do you mean? What are other guys like, I guess, is maybe where we should start? I mean, like, just cheating on people and doing other. Oh, my gosh. You think Rick's a cheater?
Starting point is 00:14:10 Yeah. I don't understand. Rick said this was your first date. Yeah. So my friends who date a lot more than I do taught me this trick that like you don't want to like go in someone's phone because that's just sort of rude. But when he went to the bathroom, he left his phone on the table. Yeah. What you do is you call the guy's phone when he goes away and you see what name pops up.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Oh, how he has you saved in his phone? Yeah, so when he went to the bathroom, I called his phone. I don't know. The name that popped up on the screen from my number said, Matthew. Oh. You were Matthew? I mean, I don't know. What conclusion would you guys come up with if you saw that?
Starting point is 00:15:00 Oh, that is actually exactly what I would think. I would see where you would jump to that conclusion. It's sneaky. The only time a guy would change a woman's name in his phone to a male name is so that his other female in his life wouldn't know who's calling. Got it. So that's the reason why you asked him to take you home? Yeah, when he came back, I wasn't in the mood for dessert. I was just ready to go.
Starting point is 00:15:26 So wait, but you never accused him. You never said, hey, you're in a relationship. What the heck? Yeah, because, I mean, it's only a first date and I don't know this person. I know, but you've also just spent two months with him at the run club. You know what I mean? I think you have every right to be angry. That's two months of him lying to you.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Brooke wants you to confront him right now, actually. She does. If that's actually what is happening. She wants it to happen because we actually already have Rick on the other line listening to this waiting to talk to him. Seriously. Oh, no. Seriously, yeah. Hi.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Yeah. Hello? I'd start explaining yourself there, Rick. Um, what is there to explain? The thing that she said, maybe. Why would you call a radio show if you're in another relationship? I'm not in a relationship. Okay, why did you name me Matthew in your phone?
Starting point is 00:16:24 Um, because I just thought it was funny. There's just, I have my reasons. So you do have a reason, but it's not cheating, but you think the reason's, You don't have an excuse right now, is that? Sounds like I can hear him thinking right now. Yeah, literally. I don't have anything to have an excuse for. I mean, I'm dating, technically.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Okay. I don't see a problem. So there are other women that you're going out with. But no one that you call a girlfriend or you're committed to. A wife. Right? Yeah. I'm seeing other people and for their protection, I change their names in my phone. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:17:03 What do you mean? Who else is texting you? Not only do I have a Matthew, but I have a John, I have a Mark. I've got a lot of names. You've got all the apostles. You're just going right down the New Testament with names, aren't you? Look at you with Bible references. That's weird.
Starting point is 00:17:19 I mean, you guys are laughing, but if I'm going on three dates in one week, I don't want these girls to feel bad, so I want a guy's name to pop up if my phone rings, so none of them feel bad. See, for me, that would spark a whole new round of suspicious. A lot of dudes texting you tonight, huh? Why is John to keep asking what you're wearing? Why is he called five times? He's kind of hot and heavy in the text.
Starting point is 00:17:43 I don't know. I don't know. He's spinning it like it's for our protection, but I know that people go. Yeah. It just seems dishonest and weird. Okay. It's not dishonest or weird. It's just the way that I date, okay?
Starting point is 00:17:57 I mean, if anything, it's all the women going through his phone that are maybe a little dishonest. Well, let me try to clear things up here because, Rick, you say you're seeing a a bunch of different women and you're dating around and that's totally fine. But can I ask you are any of these ladies in your life, would any of them consider themselves as your girlfriend? Or is
Starting point is 00:18:17 this just like you don't see them as your girlfriend? Wow, that's a good question. He's like, well, I got a couple of clingy ones. Yeah, a couple of them might. A couple of them might say they're your girlfriend? Oh. Yeah, if you ask them, possibly. Delusion.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Why would they think that? Would they think that because you told them that? No, I've never used the term girlfriend in any of my dating experience. Okay. I mean, at this point, we are running out of time, so I do need to ask if you want to go out on another date. But how many run clubs are you in right now, Rick? Oh, to meet all these men? Yeah, I mean, whatever they are.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Just the one. All right. But he's in a bowling league. He's also part of a wine tasting club. Brenda, I know this is all looking pretty bad, but despite what you've heard, would you be willing to give Rick one more chance and go on another date with him? Because we'd pay for it. No, I just don't trust it.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I don't trust it, you guys. Well, you shouldn't. A lot of people agree with you right now in the text board. When a guy says there's a couple of women who think they're my girlfriend, it's usually a pretty big red flag. That's fair. Yeah. Well, Rick, man, I'm sorry. It looks like you're going to have to block Matthew in your phone now.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Darn. I think Matthew's blocking him. Double block. Yeah, whatever. Thanks anyways, I guess. I don't know. We try. Look how heartbroken he is.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Yeah. Oh, man. This one hurts. What girlfriend is he's going to rush home to? Yeah. Let me get out the Bible and I'll find out. Oh, he's hitting on Gabriel. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:19:51 He's the saucy one. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Okay, friends, real talk. You are worth the wait. We've all been there, giving our energy to connections that didn't honor ours. And watching friends do the same. And honestly, we all deserve better. That's why Bumble is built for intentional dating. Safety is such a big
Starting point is 00:20:11 deal for us all, especially when meeting new people. And Bumble gives you the peace of mind with options like photo and ID verification. That little extra step means you know the person you're talking to is who they say they are, with their real photos, and they are ready to show up authentically. And once you feel safe, you can actually focus on what matters, finding someone who gets you. With shared interest, it's easy to see right away who vives with your passions, whether that's true crime podcasts, yoga mornings, or weekend hikes. So take a pause, affirm your worth, and protect your peace. Bumble helps you create safe, meaningful connections, the kind that truly respect your boundaries, your energy, and your time. Thinking about dating again,
Starting point is 00:20:55 take this as your sign. Start your love story on Bumble. I'm Robert Smith. This is Jacob Goldstein. And we used to host a a show called Planet Money. And now we're back making this new podcast called Business History about the best ideas and people and businesses in history. And some of the worst people, horrible ideas, and destructive companies in the history of business. Having a genius idea without a need for it is nothing. It's like not having it at all. It's a very simple, elegant lesson. Make something people want. First episode, how Southwest Airlines use cheap seats and free whiskey to fight its way into the airline business.
Starting point is 00:21:34 The most Texas story ever. There's a lot of mavericks in that story. We're going to have mavericks on the show. We're going to have plenty of robber barons. So many robber barons. And you know what? They're not all bad. And we'll talk about some of the classic great moments of famous business geniuses,
Starting point is 00:21:48 along with some of the darker moments that often get overlooked. Like Thomas Edison and the electric chair. Listen to business history on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever. you get your podcast. I thought it was a good point Alexis brought up because it sounds... I'm surprised I'm saying this. But, you know, it does sound like it's an okay idea to do with just a couple names, but when you're juggling a bunch of different dudes names,
Starting point is 00:22:18 swapping them out for girls' names, it's got to get really, really confusing, really fast. Is it really my friend Matt or is it? It's hard enough to remember people's regular names, Let alone the pseudonym you give him. I don't like a guy that's this calculated before he does anything wrong. I don't trust him. Before he does anything wrong, he just said that multiple girls think that they're his girlfriend. But he's not in actual trouble yet.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Imagine. That's true. That's already organizing. That's true. That's not a good point. Calculating. Yes. Before you know, he's going to end up talking to some girl named Elizabeth, but accidentally
Starting point is 00:22:50 call her Hank and then it'll be super awkward. That's after they kiss. Hopefully we did him a favor by exposing. this early on in his questionable dating strategy. Yeah. I don't really want to do him any favor. Trust me. He needs some help, Brooke.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Come on. If he's doing this, he's desperate. Just remember, you can check out our podcast wherever you get yours. Apple, Spotify, IHeart. We're going to be there. Just look us up at Brooke and Jeffrey. On the podcast health stuff, we are tackling all the health questions that keep you up at night. I'm Dr. Priyankawali, a double board certified physician.
