Starting point is 00:01:31 Second Date Update. How soon is too soon to ask someone to move in with you? Whoa, that's a huge question. Is the first 20 minutes of a date too early? It's going to go out on a limb there, Jeff, and say yes. Absolutely yes. Wow, judgy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:50 That has nothing to do with our listener, Corey, and his date. It's just a personal question that I've been having for myself. I am curious to hear Corey's thoughts on it. Corey, in your opinion, is 20 minutes too early to hand someone the keys to your apartment? Yeah, I suppose. Why was so much hesitation? to hand someone the keys to your apartment? Yeah. Why was so much hesitation? I thought about it. Corey.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Yeah. Just trying to get an idea of the type of dater you are. Are you a snails-paced type of guy or jumping to love quickly? I feel like he's got 24 minutes. Okay. Yeah. You like to play it medium. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:02:22 But tell us about the date that you went on recently. Who's the girl you met i met a girl named melanie okay and um honestly she's like the prettiest girl i've ever gone out with oh that's cute man i must feel good i don't i don't know i and dating is hard i mean yeah we hear that a lot i don't meet people easy so tried these apps, and I think most of them don't work. But I did get to talking to Melanie, and she has curly blonde hair, and she's like the perfect height. What is the perfect height? I'm just curious for you. That's true. It's different for everyone.
Starting point is 00:03:01 You know, like 5'3". Yeah, that's perfect. And I really liked that she didn't have fake eyelashes. Not perfect anymore, huh, Alexis? Those can be a lot. Because I just think, you know, the fake eyelashes are just a big red flag that a whole lot of times... Oh, I hate her. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:22 What red flags I have about you so far? Corey, you may not know this, but Alexis does have giant fake eyelashes that she wears into work every single day. She flies into work. What's the red flag about them? They're fake. And I just like a girl to be like her natural self. Are we going to ask her if she's getting highlights? No, let's just stay off of that. We won't get into any of the physical stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Tell us about the date that you went on. Where did you take her? Well, I found a neat place to go to dinner because I thought, you know, we'd had some good food and talk. And I thought everything had gone well. And then I got uncomfortable. I wasn't sure. So I Googled, like, how do you know if you had the perfect date? Wait, is this after?
Starting point is 00:04:03 Are we done with the date when you're Googling? Or you're Googling this at the table. Whoa. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like the next day. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:09 The next day you were unsure of how it really went. So there were four questions and I went through them. So like the first one says, was I comfortable? And I was like, you know, I had a really good chair. So I was physically comfortable. I think they meant what that means i think they mean emotionally i think comfortable sharing right and being yourself i would say yes i was not 10 okay good i mean i'm obviously a little nervous but i thought i was comfortable all right so one out of four let's check on that one yeah and then the next one um is did i laugh and i mean i never had like the huge big bang theory kind of laugh but i chuckled
Starting point is 00:04:52 you laughed big at the big bang theory huh oh yeah that show is a knee slapper now that you say that i don't think that you've laughed with us once i know we're not making any any big bang theory jokes no i just don't think we're funny but you did laugh with her at all he giggled well i yeah i did and i so i think that's a pass i go check mark on that one okay what's next and then it's did she ask me any questions uh-huh so she did like i ordered chicken with no onions and she was like wow so you really don't like onions And then it's, did she ask me any questions? Uh-huh. So she did. Like, I ordered chicken with no onions. And she was like, wow, so you really don't like onions?
Starting point is 00:05:30 And, like, I mean, she asked me other stuff, too. That one really stuck with you. It's deep. She wants to get to know you. Sounds like a big conversation. He's like, I don't answer those questions on the first date. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Is that the whole list? No, there's one more and then the very last one was after the date do you feel excited and it said excited means you want to uh sing a bop or dance or you call a friend and if you feel that way don't worry about it it'll be fine tomorrow but and i did i felt excited I did. And I called a friend. But then tomorrow came. And she's not texting me back. Oh, no. So I'm like, I'm excited, but maybe she isn't.
Starting point is 00:06:12 I don't know what happened. Well, I mean, you sound like a pretty analytical guy. Were you able to come off, you think, as natural and show off, like, some personality on the date? I mean, like, how would you do that like what do you mean i don't know did you like talk about your interests or make jokes were you self deprecating at all i just think it's important to make some sort of emotional connection with someone did you bring any like flair to the date like something a little bit out of the box like maybe tried the disappearing finger trick on her wait Wait a minute. That's flair? Maybe one of those hand buzzers?
Starting point is 00:06:46 We just had dinner. There was no fingers thing. I mean. Okay. Well, that was got to do the finger stuff. He did chicken with no onions. Is that not flair enough for you, Jeff? Yeah, for you.
Starting point is 00:06:56 That does say a lot. She does the hand motion, and she's like, where did your finger go? Oh, my goodness. Could spark something. No, Jeff, it can't. So how long has it been since you and Melanie went on that date? It's been like five days. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:09 All right. And no response at all. Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. Maybe she didn't feel as excited as I did. Maybe, man. Brooke is yawning right here. Brooke can't stand to be on the phone with you.
Starting point is 00:07:23 She can't see me, Alexis. Once you sell someone no onions, Brooke is checking right out. Anyway, you can tell Brooke is really invested in this. When we come back, we're going to call Melanie. It's not you, man. It's just early. That's all. We're going to do our best for you, I promise,
Starting point is 00:07:37 when we try and get your second date update right after this, okay? Okay, thanks. Okay, okay. Anyone listening to me? Second date update uh if only our man cory would have brought his checklist along on the date with him instead of waiting until afterwards to do it that would be a good idea well then maybe they could have checked each other's boxes together maybe she's a box checker, too. Could be, because Corey says he doesn't date a lot,
Starting point is 00:08:09 but he managed to lock down a dinner with a woman named Melanie. Yeah. That's the Mel. Yep. Got confused for a second. Good job, bud. The thing about Melanie is she's au natural. No fake eyelashes and the perfect height of 5'3".
Starting point is 00:08:29 He couldn't think of any missteps or mistakes or missed opportunities that happened during the date. The only miss is him missing her after it's all over. So we're going to try and reconnect them here in just a second. Corey, how you feeling? Oh, well, nervous. You know, we concentrated a lot on her physical appearance. What did you like about her personality? I mean, honestly, she's the best person I've gone out with.
Starting point is 00:08:55 It doesn't tell me much. I feel like for a guy who's looking for naturel, I don't know. Brooke's just trying to figure out something that she can steal from you to put into her next anniversary card to her husband. So she's trying to get the romance out of him. I see. I see. I like that. You know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:12 She's kind and she's nice. And I like that about her. All right. So don't force Brooke to make you find things about her personality that you like. If you like her for her looks, that's totally acceptable. We're calling this person. It's good to know we're calling a kind, nice person. This will make it go easier
Starting point is 00:09:29 for us even. Would we have been mean if they were not kind and nice? If they were mean to us, absolutely. I'd be mean back. Okay. We're all going to put on our best kind, nice faces for this phone call and try and get you a second date. You ready? I think so.
Starting point is 00:09:45 All right, you got this, buddy. Here we go. Hello? Hey, is this Melanie? Yes. Hey, Melanie, what's up? You're on the radio right now with Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Hi.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Hey, Melanie. How you doing? What's the show? Okay. Okay. I know. Oh, you listen? Wait, what do you know?
Starting point is 00:10:16 Oh, my gosh. I can't believe you guys are calling me. I don't really know what's happening, but I did receive a text. Wait. What? a couple minutes ago from Corey. He texted you? What did he say?
Starting point is 00:10:31 He kind of just warned me that you guys were going to do this. No, dude, what? Wait, wait, wait, wait. You just ruined it. That's the whole point. I know, but that might be good for her. That shows that he cares about you and wants to not, like, surprise you with these type of things.
Starting point is 00:10:49 He's supposed to give her a heads up. I don't know what's going on. I just, he just told me you guys were going to call me. So. Okay. That's all he said. All right, well, I guess it didn't ruin it then. So, what we're doing here is called a second date update.
Starting point is 00:11:02 That's where we try and help listeners who've been out on a date to figure out the reason why they're not getting a second meetup. Yeah, and apparently it's not because he had the wrong phone number. Yeah, that's true. He said you haven't texted him back. In like five days. Yeah. I haven't. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Okay. All right, so he's not lying to us. That's okay. You're allowed to not call someone back, but it would help him if he could get a reason or figure out if something was wrong about the date. Because he's just unsure. Yeah. Okay. So we were talking about TV, and he got really, really excited about a TV show.
Starting point is 00:11:38 And I'm like, okay, what is it? And he's like, it's an older TV show. And I'm not even remembering what it was because I don't even know what it's called. And then he just said, Helen Hunt is so unappreciated. Helen Hunt? I thought you were going to say Big Bang Theory because he brought up with us that he was a fan of Big Bang Theory. Helen Hunt, do you remember her? She was like a 90s actress that was in a bunch of sitcoms.
Starting point is 00:12:01 He did not bring Big Bang Theory up. He brought a TV show I've never heard of. Got very intense and animated. He got very, very excited about it. Used his hands a lot. But don't you kind of like it when people dork out over things that they like? You know, he finally found something to show you. Yeah, I'm fun.
Starting point is 00:12:18 It wasn't that. Honestly, I like a little bit more reserved men. I just do. Okay. So he was too excited. This is mind-blowing. He's so reserved. When we talked to him, he did not seem super high-energy.
Starting point is 00:12:32 At all. Really? Ask his favorite TV show. Yeah. That's a good point. He was too excitable. He's too excitable. Well, let's put that theory to the test because I got to let you know, Melanie,
Starting point is 00:12:44 that Corey's actually on the other line listening right now and wanting to talk to you. No, he's not. Oh, yeah. That's how this works. That is wild. Corey, what do you think about what she said that you're too much for her? You're too animated. I am still in shock.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I don't understand. Honestly, I was just trying to be nice, and I thought I was probably boring. I probably wasn't exciting enough at all. I'm glad he said it. I didn't want to say it. But, like, after your review of the date, that's what it sounded like to me, too. Brooke. How long have you been waiting to say that?
Starting point is 00:13:14 I'm sorry. Say that? You said it first. Brooke, apparently you were wrong. Apparently he was way over the top exciting. This is confusing. Yeah. Maybe you can help clear it up for him, Melanie,
Starting point is 00:13:25 because I don't think it's matching with what you said. Are you sure you're remembering the right dude that you went out with? That's what I'm saying. Like, is it the right guy? Yeah, and you are so nice. It was just a little too much for me, and that's it. I mean, look at right now. I mean, you put me on the radio.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Extreme. I can tone it back if you want. Yeah, I would like if you, yeah. Just hear how he said that, guys. Everybody else laughing? You'll be asleep if you tone it back anymore. I mean, I get it. I can get excited about things, but.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Come on, guys. I mean, the Helen Huss thing, it just like was a little intense. I didn't think that could be a reason not to date me. Okay, well, you know what? Yes, your tone is a little intense. There's a reason not to date me. Okay. Well, you know what? Your tone is a little crazy. So just settle yourself a little bit. Wait, you're saying right now he's sounding crazy?
Starting point is 00:14:13 He's getting a little worked up. I can kind of hear it in his voice. Okay. Maybe, Corey, can you tone it down a little bit when you talk to her here? What is happening? Okay. I've been told that. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:14:24 This isn't the first time time i would ever tell you that this is why dating's so hard you never know what people want it is shocking i mean i will say melanie in cory's defense he's listening to you he's taking in what you he's not he's not even upset about what you said. I get that. I just, for my personal preference, I just, like, don't want to be with somebody that's that animated and, like, so out of control like that. Maybe it's something that Corey can work on. He can take some classes or something. A sedative before the date? She makes him sound like a cartoon character.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Corey, can you talk to her in a calm, controlled manner to prove to her that you're the man she wants you to be? Not sure I agree with what you said. I don't know that I need to be on medication or something. Careful, you're pushing back against her. I was joking. That was me, Corey. I was joking about being sedated.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Now's your chance, Corey, to talk to Melanie a little and prove to her that you're the right guy. Yeah, Melanie? Maybe a little chance, Corey, to talk to Melanie a little and prove to her that you're the right guy. Yeah, Melanie? Maybe a little quieter, Corey. Okay. I just think you're really pretty. Aww. My headset is blaring in my ears, guys.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Did you hear that, Melanie? That's so sweet. What other calm things would you like to say to her? Okay. Can we try this again? Are you feeling the growth here already melanie i think we're taking steps towards a calmer more even keel version of cory here well i know that's what you're hearing but you guys that's not what i'm hearing okay it's still too intense for you how are you meeting men that are more calm than this? I know. I don't understand. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Well, this is my truth and I'm living in it. You tell us. Yeah, Brooke, keep your judgments over there. I'm fascinated. Melanie, we all respect you and what you want for yourself. That's totally up to you. But we would love to send you out on another
Starting point is 00:16:22 date with Corey on our dime. If you're up for it. If not, that's okay. Pretty please? You know, if it just gets us off this air. We can try again. We can try again. All right. Well, I want to be excited for you, Corey.
Starting point is 00:16:38 But I feel like that would backfire against us. So this is good. Three. No attacks there. Let's try it a little try a little lighter corey hooray congratulations corey you're now finally ready to date a real woman yeah i feel like this is what would happen if npr did second dates brooke and jeffrey in the. So if they actually do end up going out on a date and being a couple.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Are we making a bet right now? I'm just saying she is going to own him. Oh yeah. Do you think he's okay with it though? Totally. He sounded desperate to do whatever it took to get into her good graces. It's what some men want. It's going to be a situation where she's not only wearing the pants
Starting point is 00:17:26 in the relationship, but the overcoat and the socks and the shoes too. She's in total control and there's going to be a tiny little man quietly stirring a pot of soup in the corner. Is this your guys' fantasy or no? No.
Starting point is 00:17:37 I can't tell what you want here. I think it's his fantasy maybe, but that might not work for the average person. Yeah. But hey, it's still a relationship, and that means we're a success. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? In a weird way, she's right.
Starting point is 00:17:51 We never said we guarantee a healthy relationship. Or a happy one. We didn't guarantee partnerships here. That's true. It's just a date. We try to hook you up. That's it. That's the bottom line.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Okay. And we are willing to go to any lengths to make it happen. Read the small print, people. Email the show. We'll call that person who isn't calling you back. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Jon Stewart is back in the host chair at The Daily Show, which means he's also
