I think I was put here to save souls by getting people out of prison. The Girlfriends, Jailhouse Lawyer.

Starting point is 00:02:30 Listen to Family Secrets Season 12 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We've got a brand new Second Date podcast for you today. Thank you so much for being here on the podcast. It's Brick and Jeffrey in in the morning Yeah, and they say it couldn't be done men thought it was impossible But after 20 years one of our listeners finally got out of the friend zone. Well, it's crazy What do you do after? Yeah? Well you like kiss and stuff. Yeah, you end up here It's a bumpy ride, it's a bumpy ride. You know that there's no roadmap for this one So that is happening in your second date here in just a second
Starting point is 00:03:09 But what do you see Alexis that you like people? Yeah, she said all caps Brooke Jeff Jose Alexis my sister sent me a second date update about a year ago Oh, I have binged 1857 episodes in under 12 months I've binge-pinched 1,857 episodes in under 12 months. Just a random dude from Metro Detroit hoping Alexis reads my comment. Much love from the Mitten. Yay, the Mitten! And you got your...what's next, Mitten? What's your next goal?
Starting point is 00:03:35 You've heard everything, you had Alexis read a comment. Well, I mean, we need to prank him. We need to phone-tap him or something. I think he gets a spot on the show. Yeah, you may just take my job. Oh, we gotta start sending out the show. Yeah, you mean On Brooke and Jeffrey, but if only we had a marketing budget. Yeah or any budget. All right Hey, thank you so much for being here your brand new second date update starts right now Second date update What are the percentages of how people meet when they come to us?
Starting point is 00:04:08 It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. All lines gotta be up there. I'd say like 80%. 80, 85% dating apps. I think a couple years ago that was up to like 90, but lately people have been starting to grow tired of that. They're finding new ways to connect. It's true.
Starting point is 00:04:23 And you hear about more people meeting at run clubs and yoga classes one couple even met at the dentist office in the lobby when they were both high on nitrous waiting for the rides to take them home maybe just your personal story yeah sexy and worth mentioning but we don't get a lot of folks on this segment who already knew each other for years Before they ever went out on a date Comfortable enough to like check in and see what was going on That's what you think but we're doing it today with our listener Jillian. So Jillian welcome to the show Hi, thank you for taking a call
Starting point is 00:04:59 I'm like so like you got ghosted by someone who is your friend like How long were they were your friend for? So Thomas and I have known each other for almost 20 years. Why? What? When you're a friend. Wait, how? How do you guys know each other? So we grew up in the same neighborhood. We were on sports teams together and our families were super close.
Starting point is 00:05:22 God, we hung out together all the time, you know, the barbecues and all that. Oh man, that's like really interwoven. Yeah. Was he your first kiss ever as a kid growing up? No, he did ask me out like multiple times like over the years he'd ask me out and I said no, not because I don't like him, but just because I thought it might be awkward for our family, you know. Like, you know, we dated, didn't work out. I didn't want to be a weird I families get that close I had somebody who I thought was my cousin my whole life and like literally like five ten years ago my
Starting point is 00:05:52 Parents are like that's not your cousin. Yeah good family friend. I'm like wait Lisa Marie's not my cousin I mean they feel like blood they really I'm with you on that one Okay, so he was trying for it and you kept shooting him down for years. Yeah, so what changed well I tell him a couple weeks ago and a picnic my family was hosting it has been a while since I've seen him and Align he looked really good Okay, and that changed your mind yeah, I was like forget weird let's just go for this Okay, it's not shallow you've known each other for a long time Yeah, I mean I feel like it was safe and these days you find someone that you're so safe with
Starting point is 00:06:37 Okay, so wait, how did you guys turn it into a romantic date though? Well, I hit him up I hit him up and I was just like hey hey, you wanna meet up, hang out? And he kind of think out a little, you know? He was like, when are you free? Let me cook you dinner. Oh, wait, he's like, I've waited my whole life for this moment. Yeah, he didn't play hard to get at all with you.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Why would he? That'd be weird. It's cause you rejected him for so long. No wonder he was like totally caught back by it. Well, I thought he'd be confused that maybe they were just gonna hang out as friends But his response definitely doesn't sound like that you said the word date obviously you like made it clear Um I think it was more like in my energy in my tone that kind of made it like yeah
Starting point is 00:07:16 The 18 heart emojis at the end of the text message and the kissing emoji that wasn't the emoji she was using Okay, so that's cool. He wanted to cook for you. emoji she was using. Oh, maybe not. OK. So that's cool. He wanted to cook for you. How did that go? Oh, it was great. We had a fabulous meal. I did the whole hanging out in the kitchen watching him cook. It was like a coconut curry casserole.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Wow. Wow. That sounds delicious. Was there any awkwardness? Because sometimes when you turn these friendships into something romantic, there can be, I don't know funny moments you know to be honest I was amazed at how comfortable it felt the conversation was really good we did end up like a little make out session so he picked up sounds weird to say but it may be hard to get
Starting point is 00:07:59 out of the friend zone like when you've been friends for so long friend zone like when you've been friends for so long. Apparently he did it. Maybe his mind is just still blown and he hasn't like come to realize that this wasn't a dream. Yeah, did that really happen? What happened after the kiss? Well, I did go home. I was a good girl.
Starting point is 00:08:21 But I got a couple of nice texts from him afterwards, you know, thanking me for coming over. But then I've texted him a few more times with just sort of like some invitations, what are you doing, wanna grab a drink, et cetera. And he's been sending back the word busy. Oh. Just the word? Yes, like the total attitude and energy and all of it has just changed.
Starting point is 00:08:41 And I have no idea what's going on with him. Do you think he's tried to play hard to get now? So does him just texting the word busy to you over and over is that worse than just getting straight-up ghosted I don't think he goes because like our family But just saying one word busy it implies that he's mad at you or something's wrong We're actually kind of busy right now So we should probably move on to the second part of this call where we reach out to Thomas for you and try to figure out what's going on. He's honestly not super busy We'll find out when we do your second date update right after this second date update right after this. Second date update.
Starting point is 00:09:31 If you're just joining us, quick recap of Jillian's date with Thomas, a guy she's known for 20 years as a family friend. And Thomas has actually asked her out several times before. She always would say no to him until he showed up to a family picnic looking like a total snack. She gave Tommy boy the old green light after that. You want to sit down next to the potato salad. Oh, yeah. Doesn't get any hotter. So eventually went over to his place. He cooked a meal for her.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So sweet. Sounds like a lot of their family gatherings are kind of based around food. So that sounds normal. But since then, he's only been replying to her texts with one word, busy. Ah, dude. Very cold, and Jillian doesn't understand why. So we're trying to help figure that out. Jillian, I'm curious, just going back to the date night, you said he cooked like a coconut curry thing for you. When you bit into it, did you make a weird face or something that could have been taken the wrong way by him or maybe he got offended no no
Starting point is 00:10:29 there's no way like he's coconut curry with amazing I was like gushing if anything yeah and they had a makeout session afterwards I've made out with people angrily before when I've been sometimes you settle differences if you're a manager and Jeff asked for the manager do not come yeah You're about to get a piece of my mind and my tongue I'm gonna say that their first kiss was like crazy cuz it's like 20 years in the yeah, that's wild I'll build on to that you even said it all felt natural the kids felt natural the chemistry, right? Mm-hmm. I mean there is potential in this if we can get him to Keep going. Yeah, so let's just dial his number
Starting point is 00:11:07 Hopefully he's not too busy to pick up and we'll see if we can get some answers out of him, but I'm dialing it right now Hello hey, is this Thomas? Yeah, who's this? Hey man? We're a radio show. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning Okay Yeah, who's this? Hey man, we're a radio show. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Hello, good morning. Okay. Hey. Let's go. We're just calling to brag. We're a cool show. Yeah, so.
Starting point is 00:11:32 We are very excited to talk to you. I am anyway. We've actually, we've heard a lot about you from someone who asked us to reach out to you named Jillian. Oh, okay. Yeah, okay. We know you know her for a long time and this is a segment we do call the second date update because we're trying to figure out why after you two hung out the other night and had dinner together, I mean she feels like there should be another hangout session, and you're not responding
Starting point is 00:12:08 Yeah, I don't really know if I'm comfortable talking about this. I'm sorry I got a well she thought the date went so well did it not go well in your eyes I mean, it's such a cute story you two yeah Been like in the making right 20 years you finally get out of the friend zone which impresses every man Yeah, yeah, I had I was looking forward to it and it went really well, but well, there was just a violation of trust, unfortunately. Uh-oh. A violation. I don't think she's aware of that at all.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Yeah, she probably isn't. But if you are such good family friends, going back 20 years, I feel like you should be comfortable enough to reach out and talk to her if there was an issue, a violation of some sort. I mean, I'm not sure like how malicious it was, but it's just it's complicated, unfortunately, because of her. My grandmother won't talk to me right now.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Wait, what? You. Your grandma doesn't like her. What does your grandma have to do with Jillian? Yeah. What? Your grandma doesn't like her or something? What does your grandma have to do with Jillian? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Well, I didn't realize at the time, but she came over and I wanted to treat her right, right? So I busted out grandma's secret recipe, you know? It's like this amazing dish that we always make for special occasions, a coconut curry casserole, right? And I guess while I was in the kitchen cooking and doing my thing, at some point, I must've had my back turned
Starting point is 00:13:26 and the family recipe book is just sitting there open. It's not supposed to be shared with anybody or anything like that. Oh. Yeah. Apparently, at some point, she must've taken a photo of the recipe and forwarded it to her grandmother.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Oh no. She stole a recipe? Yeah, I don't know if she meant to steal it like maliciously or for whatever reason but It's now a thing where her grandmother is holding it over my grandmother's head and now my grandmother's mad at me She's like, why would you share that? You know, she's pissed That's a petty grandma rival he's going on dude dude this feels not that petty to me though You get a signature dish that you bring to every event and everybody wants to know what it is And you can't tell them because then they're gonna bring it then you have to ask like oh are you bringing it?
Starting point is 00:14:17 I'm gonna bring it's a whole thing some restaurants have literally started based on someone's secret family recipe like KFC Yeah have literally started based on someone's secret family recipe like KFC. Yeah, secret recipe. Yeah, I just I feel like at the very least you should have like said something or asked me before. But like now because of the way it went down and I didn't realize and then like, you know, these need a grandma. They can they they got claws, you know, did you tell her was a secret recipe before the photo like she knew? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. She knows it's my grandma's secret recipe before the photo like she knew oh yeah oh yeah she knows it's my grandma's secret recipe absolutely okay now my grandmother's like you let some
Starting point is 00:14:47 temptress come in and seduce you okay hello hello hello hello I'm here Thomas okay yeah well shoot okay yeah Thomas that's Jillian she's been waiting on the other line wanting to talk to you are you kidding me no yeah so that's that's how this segment works. She's kind of sneaky. I know. Just like grandma. No, no. So listen, I did not think it was going to be that big of a deal. I had no idea that my grandma was going to share it with your grandma like that and like literally taunt her. I did not know that she was going to do that. Well, you've met our grandmothers. They they like, well, they got like old-school beef with each other
Starting point is 00:15:33 Like I didn't realize there was gonna be like that elevated emotionally Yeah Hilarious now. She won't even like answer my phone calls You don't really want to answer any grandma phone calls, to be honest. I don't know. I think you should check the will because somebody may be written out. I mean, maybe I could talk to her. Maybe I can talk to her. Trust me, she does not want to talk to you.
Starting point is 00:15:57 I appreciate that. But not to the temptress that seduced you. But I think there's only one way out of this, and that's Jillian. You have to go get your grandmother's secret recipe and give it to Thomas's grandmother It's like tit for tat. Oh, yeah. Wait, wait guys. I don't know. Maybe that's a little too far That's too far, but what you did was innocent. I think that might actually work I think I know what recipe my grandmother would want
Starting point is 00:16:25 Don't say it Grandpa Joe's bourbon pecan pie That it would be a solution to balance things out and restore peace to the neighborhood into the grandmother's If you have to sneak it, I think it's worth it. Remember how hot Thomas got? Oh yeah. What was that? Oh, you didn't hear that Thomas. Yeah, you're hot now by the way.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Never mind. I mean, are we really doing this right now? Are we just swapping old family recipes to resolve a dating dispute? That's where our show's coming from. Somehow I find it sexy. I think the whole thing. Sexy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:07 But I don't want Jillian's grandma to now be mad at us for encouraging this and now we're caught up in this neighborhood feud. Oh, we'll just give her one of Alexis' recipes for mac and cheese. Oh, yeah, no butter, no milk, a little bit of pepper. Splash of water maybe.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Okay. Well, I mean, I can't believe we're doing this, but Jillian, is it possible that you'd be able to give one I'm really one family recipe in order to make things good with Thomas. That's right the pecan pie Wow just quick correction. It's not just a pecan pie recipe is a bourbon pecan pie Yeah, all right. Yeah, that's the one we want Jillian says she's willing to betray her own grandmother and give it up to you Well, I'm gonna have to ask her and I'm gonna take some work, but I'm willing to give it a try
Starting point is 00:18:01 Will you say yes to a second date because if if you do, we would pay for it. I mean, how can I say no? Yeah, of course. All right. Let's go. I love it. We'd love to see the kissing after that pecan pie. And after the coconut curry.
Starting point is 00:18:16 There you go. I'm hungry and turned on. That's normal. Thank you, Thomas. I'm looking forward to it. Oh, cute. Aw. You guys are gonna be cute. Yeah. Of course. I'm looking forward to it. Oh, cute. You guys are going to be cute. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Of course. And if you come over again, I got the recipe book out. Just promise me you'll ask me to close it and no wandering eyes, right? Yeah, you temptress. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Kelly Harnett spent over a decade in prison for a murder she says she didn't commit. I'm 100% innocent. While behind bars, she learned the law from scratch. Because oh God, Harnett, jailhouse lawyer. And as she fought for herself, she also became a lifeline for the women locked up alongside her.
Starting point is 00:19:00 You're supposed to have faith in God, but I had nothing but faith in her. So many of these women had lived the same stories. I said, were you a victim of domestic violence? And she was like, yeah. But maybe Kelly could change the ending. I said, how many people have gotten other incarcerated individuals out of here? I'm going to be the first one to do that. This is the story of Kelly Harnett,
Starting point is 00:19:27 a woman who spent 12 years fighting not just for her own freedom, but her girlfriends too. I think I have a mission from God to save souls by getting people out of prison. Dude, what I want is an Awkward Tuesday phone call with those two petty grandmas. Yeah. I mean, that's where the real drama is. I wanna be part of a bake-off.
Starting point is 00:21:18 I feel like her grandma set her up, put it in her mind to go out with him just so she could get that recipe. Yeah, maybe that's it. Honestly, I kinda thought that too. Like, what if she was like, let's just go on one date. Yeah. But then she wouldn't have been asking us for it.
Starting point is 00:21:29 I know, I know. Dirty work for me, sweetie. Yeah. It's a lot of drama still. But we love it.
