Starting point is 00:02:16 Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The forces shaping markets and the economy are often hiding behind a blur of numbers. So that's why we created The Big Take from Bloomberg Podcasts to give you the context you need
Starting point is 00:02:36 to make sense of it all. Every day in just 15 minutes, we dive into one global business story that matters. You'll hear from Bloomberg journalists like Matt Levine. A lot of this meme stock stuff is, I think, embarrassing to the SEC. Follow the Big Take podcast on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Second Date Update. You know, normally whenever we have listeners on this segment, we have them start at the beginning of their date and tell us the full story. That's usually how stories work, Jeff. Well, today we might need to start at the end. Oh. Because our listener, Julian, thinks the reason he might not be getting a call back is because of his text game after they met up. Or lack of text game.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I don't know. We need to bring Julian on to figure out what's happening. Julian, welcome to the show, man. Hey, what's going on? How you guys doing? It's like if your game is that bad, how'd you get a date in the first place? I mean, don't you have to have somewhat good text game to even secure the first date? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Welcome to the show, Julian. We're going to get berated before we hear anything about what you texted or what happened. I'm telling him that it can't be as bad as he thinks. What's different with your pre-riz and your pro-day riz? I like that, Jose. What happened? Well, I went out with Tess. Tess, is that what you said her name
Starting point is 00:03:56 was? Right, yeah. Okay. He's even second guessing. Brooke and Jose and Alexis, they don't know anything about the date or the woman that you went out with. Got me terrified. No, no, no. Did I get the name wrong?
Starting point is 00:04:09 No, you're good. I've been there when I've doubted myself on her name. I'm like, wait, I thought you were Jose. So her name was Tess. And what happened after your date? I don't know how you guys would feel about this. But after our date was over, I sent her four texts. Four texts, okay.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Yeah, and she didn't respond to any of them. Oh. Uh-oh. Maybe, did you text like my best friend does when she goes like, hi, next text, what? That's how I text. You'll get like eight texts when it's one sentence? It was across like six days.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Oh. Oh, okay. We were assuming it was that night as soon as she left. sentence? It was across like six days. Oh. We were assuming it was that night as soon as she left. I don't think that's bad. What did she say back? That's what he was saying. Now that's the problem. I'd reach out.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'd get no answer. I'd wait a day and I'd check in again. Okay. You know. Why are you blaming yourself for a day, and I'd check in again. Okay. You know, see what she was doing, you know. Okay. Why are you blaming yourself for a bad text game? I don't know. Like, I told my guy friends, and they were all like, dude, you're spamming her.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Spamming? I mean, spamming is worse, but you're not getting a response back, so kind of. See, I feel like you're just not giving up, and I don't think that that's necessarily a bad thing. But if a girl wants you to give up, then that's a bad thing. I'm trying to be on his side. She may be like, take the hint, and you're like putting yourself out there. How do you feel about it?
Starting point is 00:05:32 Well, honestly, I'm not spamming her. These are all like a day apart or two days per text. Spamming would be all the time. Your guy friends disagree. Right. They were like, no, it comes off desperate because it basically tells her that I have nothing else going on in my life.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Okay. That's what each text says. That's a clear point too. Are you free? Are you free yet? Are you free today? Yeah. Then you're really thirsty.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And do they have a point? Do you have nothing else going on in your life? Yeah, be honest. No, they don't have a point. I don't think it's bad
Starting point is 00:06:04 like showing that I like her and want to talk to her. Okay, well, what did you like about her on the date? Yeah, let's talk about the actual date. Like, what did you guys do and get into that story? We met online and, you know, we met at this little Mexican restaurant and it looked
Starting point is 00:06:19 so good. Aw, that's cute. So, you know, I told the hostess that it was our anniversary. Whoa. Oh. Wait, what? Why wouldn't you go with, like, her birthday or something? You know, technically, it's our anniversary of our first date.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Ooh. Well, okay. He does have a point. This feels like so much. It's year zero of their anniversary. I would be running for the door I'd be so freaked out already As long as there's free dessert
Starting point is 00:06:49 You're running straight for that table It's that fried ice cream I do love that When a kid's born it's their birthday So technically he's right And we're all judging about it What did Tess think? Well you know when the dessert You know, was nice flan, which is pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:07:07 I do love flan. It was so good. The waiter kind of mentioned it, but it didn't become an issue. Oh. Okay, they didn't come out like cumpleaños, Feli. You know what I mean? Maybe they thought that you guys were just a really cute, special couple, and that's what she thought.
Starting point is 00:07:21 So wait, so she didn't hear you tell them that it was your anniversary? Oh, no, no. Oh, okay. When you made the reservation. Got it. All wait, so she didn't hear you tell them that it was your anniversary? Oh, no, no. Oh, when you made the reservation. Got it. That doesn't sound too bad. Yeah, she might have thought that they'd given to us by mistake. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:07:33 She doesn't know. So how did the date end? Well, since she Ubered there, offered to drive her back home. Yeah. Right after we leave the restaurant, she's like, OMG, is that a Ross dress for less?
Starting point is 00:07:45 I love that store. Oh, she loves a Ross. Lady who loves a bargain. What could go wrong there? So what do you say, girl? I'll buy you anything in Ross. What do you what do you want? Well, she's like, oh, let's go in.
Starting point is 00:07:58 They have the best deals. It was kind of weird. She wants to hang out still. That's good. She wants to shop. Yeah. I was a little confused, honestly, but. That's good. She wants to shop. Yeah. I was a little confused, honestly, but it was fine because I went in and got a jacket. You got something out of it.
Starting point is 00:08:12 That's cute. Did she like the way you looked in it? Yeah, she said it was neat. Neat isn't neat. That's what Brooke says to her son. That's a neat little hat you got on there. After he draws like a poop picture. That's neat. That is a weird compliment. you got on there. After he draws like a poop picture. Well, honey, that's me.
Starting point is 00:08:26 All right. That is a weird compliment. And then you drove her home? Actually, she kind of decided to get an Uber instead of me driving her home. Huh. Oh. Why do you think that is? Whoa. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Maybe she needed to go somewhere else before she went home. I don't know. Was there like a shift in vibe at Ross? Did something happen? Was the neat jacket too neat? Did you two fight over the same jacket? Or there's a TJ Maxx right next door and she's like,
Starting point is 00:08:52 oh, I gotta get my Maxx and Easter on. That's actually an upgrade. I do. I'm with Alexis. Okay. You know what? I wish I knew. Okay, well then we got some stuff to work with.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Your friends think you might be spamming her too much with those four consecutive texts without any response. Or she found a HomeGoods down the street. Those stores you just never leave. I know. Sure. Dude, HomeGoods is so good. Yeah, for real. She could be in the candle section, Brooke. Maybe she's at Michael's
Starting point is 00:09:18 Arts and Crafts. We don't know. Let's call Tess and see what she has to say about the date and then we'll try and get your second date update right after this. Hold on. Second date update. If you're just joining us, we're on the phone with Julian, whose first date had more red flags than China's annual military parade.
Starting point is 00:09:41 That seems extreme, Jeff. Okay, I'm just kidding. That's a lot. But there were a few odd moments from the night. He stretched the truth to the restaurant hostess saying it was their anniversary. But he didn't say it in front of her, which is good. They took
Starting point is 00:09:55 a detour at one point to Ross dress for less. Which wasn't his idea. It was his date Tessa's plan. He got a cute jacket out of the deal. True. But the weirdest part was he offered her a ride home and she said yes. But then later changed her mind and was like, you know what? I'm just going to Uber myself back.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Never mind. You're going to bring up the fact that she said his jacket looked neat? Yeah. That's not good either. For some reason. On top of all that, his buddies say he's playing the after-the-date game the wrong way by sending four consecutive texts with no response, even though it was across multiple days. Who is on this poor man's side right now?
Starting point is 00:10:34 Are any of these the reason that Tess is ghosting? We don't know. Let's hope it's only one of them. There's another reason? Sorry to recap your date like that, Julian, but do you feel like it was pretty accurate? Yeah. Yeah, he says, unfortunately, that's where you're at. If anything, you can take out of this what not to do.
Starting point is 00:10:57 If everyone says don't do this and then she confirms it, at least you'll know you're doing too much. Maybe you'll find out that it's none of that and they're all wrong. You were right, Julian. She's just been busy. That's all. know you're doing too much. Maybe you'll find out that it's none of that and they're all wrong. You were right, Julian. She's just been busy. That's all. There you go. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Life happens. That's very true. Yeah. That's positive. Come on, Jeff. I'm sure we're not going to learn about a whole bunch of other red flags that came up we didn't even talk about. But let's just call Tess. She's like, you showed up naked.
Starting point is 00:11:21 That's why you went to Ross. Exactly. With the jacket. Okay. Let's call Tessess though and uh just see if she picks up and has anything to tell us extra here we go hello hi we're looking to speak with tess this is her who is is this? Oh, hey, Tess. I almost did something, but I was like, wow, Brooke, you're really excited. That's my very aroused co-host for some reason.
Starting point is 00:11:54 I'm not aroused. I'm excited to talk to Tess. Okay. Sounds like a very mean person. We are a morning show. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey. We're on the radio. Okay, and you're calling me why?
Starting point is 00:12:06 Great question. Because one of our listeners asked us to reach out to you after you two went out on a little bit of a romantic rendezvous at a Mexican restaurant. Sounds like a cute date. Is the guy named Julian? And he called you? Yeah. He said that he's texted you like four times and you haven't hit him back.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Yeah, because I'm pretty sure he knows what happened. Oh, my gosh. This is so embarrassing. Actually, he doesn't. Did you say something's embarrassing? He told us he has no idea. Embarrassing for him or embarrassing for you? Probably more embarrassing for me.
Starting point is 00:12:42 I kind of just want to forget about it. Well, okay. Look, we are totally understanding if something didn't go the way you wanted it to go or something weird happened. But we're just trying to help out Julian because he's totally confused. He mentioned to us about the Mexican restaurant and going to Ross. That's right. It sounded fun, but then you changed your mind about getting a ride home. So we're just trying to help him get some clarity.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Yeah, but you guys don't understand. It's pretty bad. I don't really want to talk about it, especially on the radio. Well, we can't see your face. We only know one of your names. And we love names. We love embarrassing stories. I mean, honestly,
Starting point is 00:13:23 it makes me feel better about my whole life. Come on. I mean, you've got to think about Julian, too, who's just sitting at home totally confused. Yeah. We can tell you an embarrassing story first. We're just trying to help relay the message over to him. Make sure that he didn't do anything wrong. I mean, he didn't do anything wrong.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Okay. Oh, really? See, that's already a good start for us. So, wait, what happened? Did it happen at the Mexican restaurant? Like, where did things go bad? It started at the Mexican restaurant and then just kind of continued from there. Give us a few details.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Yeah. So, I ordered some spicy enchiladas for dinner because I love Mexican food. Okay. And they just kind of hit different, you know? Uh-oh. Oh, the red sauce. I had to use myself to the bathroom twice during dinner. Oh, okay. Okay, well, I'll tell you, that did not come up in the recap from Julian.
Starting point is 00:14:20 He did not notice at all. Yeah, he didn't say anything about that. I'm glad that he didn't notice. And then, you know, when we were getting the check and he offered to take me home, He did not notice at all. Yeah, he didn't say anything about that. I'm glad that he didn't notice. And then, you know, when we were getting the check and he offered to take me home, it kind of just hit again. But I didn't want to go to the bathroom because I didn't want him to know. Right, because you'd already gone once or twice.
Starting point is 00:14:37 I was like, it's fine. I'm going to power through. And then when I get home, I'll take care of things. It'll be fine. And then we get outside and my body betrayed me rather violently. Oh, no. Oh, girl. It ruined my shorts right there on the... Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Starting point is 00:14:50 What? Oh, God. It's like the bridesmaids moment. How did I not know that? Oh, my God. Yeah, how did you know? Wait, is it before the car or after the car? No, they didn't get in the car.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Yeah, sorry. I don't know if you heard that, Tess, but Julian heard that. Julian's on the car. No, they didn't get in the car. Yeah, sorry. I don't know if you heard that, Tess, but Julian heard that. Julian's on the phone. Oh my god. Yeah, he's been listening to this conversation. So sorry. We had no idea that it was going to be embarrassing like that. We thought he did something
Starting point is 00:15:17 wrong. Seriously? Like, how is this managing to get even more embarrassing? Oh, yeah, that's right. Hey, it is not your fault. It is that enchilada's fault. Julian. Oh, man. Julian, talk to Tess. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:33 I had no idea at all. I had no clue. That's good, though. That was good on her, then. Impressive, Tess. She hit it. Well, luckily, I guess I had that going for me, but I panicked. That's when I thought, how can I fix I had that going for me, but I just I panicked. OK, and that's when I I thought, what? How can I fix this?
Starting point is 00:15:48 And then I saw the Ross next door and I was like, this is perfect. We're going to go in there and I can buy myself some new shorts. Yeah. Oh, now it makes sense. That's why you wanted to go into Ross. And you just make sure that he walks in front of you at all times. Yeah. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:16:03 I did manage to find a pair of shorts that looked really close to the ones that I was wearing. Okay. But, you know, I kind of wanted to throw you off the fence, so I also was looking at the sweaters. Well, you need something to maybe tie around your waist. That's a classic trick. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:16:19 So, yeah, I managed to get those two things. I took them up to the cashier, and then I had this plan in my head that was probably pretty ill-conceived. You know, do a quick change like behind his car
Starting point is 00:16:28 or a dumpster or I don't know what. The bathroom? Just use the changing room inside Ross. What are you doing? I don't know. I thought it would be
Starting point is 00:16:37 too conspicuous, but it didn't work out in my favor and I panicked and I just called the Uber. Okay. You didn't want to get in the car with him
Starting point is 00:16:44 because, okay, this all makes sense now. It is. Yeah. Julian, does this connect some of the dots for you? Oh, you poor thing. You know, it makes sense why she called my jacket neat. Like, her mind wasn't even present. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Oh, yeah. So, yeah, that's it. The thing she wanted to do was watch you try it on. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's definitely a jacket. That's me. Okay. Panicking.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Well, Julian, you can forgive her for that mistake, right? Or is that a deal breaker for you? Honestly, Tess, we're all human. Things happen. I would love to hang out with you again. This time we can go skating or bowling so you can see how, you know, non-athletic I am. And that could be embarrassing for me. Oh, look at that.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Oh, okay. He's willing to embarrass himself to even the playing field. Do not eat the nachos at a bowling alley, though. That will trigger stuff. That's a hot tip, actually. But we would like to offer to send you out with Julian one more time, Tess, and we would pay for that date if you're open to it. You could turn this horrible experience into, like,
Starting point is 00:17:43 actually kind of a meet-cute. You know what I mean? Yeah meet cute. It could be your second anniversary. She doesn't know anything about that. We'll just ignore what I said then and it'll be a sweet second date if you're willing to do it, Tess. What do you think? Oh gosh. I mean, Julian,
Starting point is 00:18:00 you're incredibly sweet. I just honestly don't think I could ever face you. It was embarrassing. You don't have to face him. Think of what you've already shown him. There's only up from here, Tess. I honestly can say I never thought someone telling me
Starting point is 00:18:17 that pooping my pants was an okay thing would be somehow romantic. It's like you guys are 80 years old already. Get thrown a pair of diapers. Yeah, let's toss in a pair of Depends. So wait, is that a yes, Tess? Yeah, I'll see you. Spicy habanero enchiladas all around.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. This second date update was actually successful on two levels. How did it end up cute? I know. The grossest way. Yes. Not only did we get a yes and wrap those two into a tasty burrito of love together. Let's not put any food with them.
Starting point is 00:18:59 We just gave the advertisers over at Ross the idea for their next touching Super Bowl commercial. Forget the Budweiser puppy befriending the Clydesdale. Now Ross has Mexican blowout girl taking advantage of their summer blowout sale. Oh, look at that. You tied in the blowout sale. I like that. I get where the name comes from now. It's between her and Hawk Tula.
Starting point is 00:19:21 It's touching and cute. Oh, my God. Honestly, they better give us an update. Yeah. Seriously. We want to follow along with them, and you can follow along with all of our second date updates. Go check them out online,
Starting point is 00:19:34 wherever you get your podcasts, at Brooke and Jeffrey. Ugh. We're so done with New Year, New You. This year, it's more you on Bumble. More of you shamelessly sending playlists, especially that one filled with show tunes. More of you finding Gemini's
