Hey, I'm Jay Shetty, and I'm the host of the on-purpose podcast. Recently, I had a conversation with the one and only Madonna.
Starting point is 00:02:26 When I was broke, and I had no friends, nowhere to live. I was held up at gunpoint. I was robbed. Always horrendous things happened to me. I had such an unhappy childhood that whatever happened to me in New York is better than what my life was. So I'm not going back.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. We've got your brand new second date to start your week. Thanks so much for being here. It's Brick and Jeffrey in the morning. And today is really about how just a simple question. Just a real simple first-date question goes very wrong. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:03:02 In his defense, it's kind of a hard. I don't know if I'd have an answer to the question. What your scariest story is? Yeah. I mean, you listen to enough crime podcasts. I would think that you'd be able to come up with something. I almost got killed in an alley once after a soccer match. A guy was literally wearing a hockey mask.
Starting point is 00:03:16 What? It was a hockey mask of the team. So I was like, go team. And he was some wasted guy approached me. Thank God my friend Tristan was there. Jumped on him and choked it. And we both pushed him down and I got our way. Did he, like, come at you on a weapon?
Starting point is 00:03:30 Yeah, no, no, no, he grabbed my shirt. Oh, wow. And then he pulled me in, and I was like, dude, and I was trying to push him and he wouldn't let go with me. And he was a lot bigger than me. Yeah, take it back. I guess it is an easy question. Easy question.
Starting point is 00:03:42 I don't know. Ask me all my second favorite one is. Nope, no, we don't got time for that. Nope. All right. A dragon! No, I'm kidding. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:03:49 All right, leave your scariest stories in the comments today. And enjoy your brand new second date. They say finding love is like finding Wi-Fi in the desert. It's rare. It's impossible. It's miraculous. Yes. Slightly alarming when it actually happens to you.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And right now, our listener, Dan, is out in the dating desert, wandering around, holding his phone up in the air, trying to get one bar of love. Oh, there it goes. Let's see if we can try and help strengthen that signal. today with this second date update. Dan, welcome to the show. Hey, guys. Thanks for taking my call. Man, yeah, we're worried about you out there.
Starting point is 00:04:34 He needs some water? How are you doing? Okay, right now. Okay. You must be feeling okay because apparently a woman has wandered into your desert of dating. Are you sure it's not a mirage? Oh, yeah. Could be. What's this girl's name? Her name's Becca.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Becca? Okay. How did you meet Becca? Yeah. So we were at a friend's mutual gathering. Like it wasn't anything crazy. It was just like a like a bonfire. Oh, fun. Nice. That's good. Yeah. So we ended up kind of sitting next to each other. So we ended up chatting. Okay. You know, your producer asked me like what stuck up about her, stuck out about her. But what is stuck up about her? That's also a good important question. Maybe that's what it is. That's why she's not calling me back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:19 She doesn't need anything that costs less than $50. Totally. Right. So what did you like about her? Well, so first of all, like, the first thing I noticed was she was wearing these, like, old converse shoes with, like, doodles on them. Oh. So just real relaxed. I didn't feel like she was trying too hard. She had to kill her smile as well.
Starting point is 00:05:38 So I was like, man, this is, like, right up my alley. That's cute. And the scene's kind of set for you. You're not at a bonfire, you know. Everybody looks good under bonfire light. That's a good one. It's better lighting. Darker, but, like, enough to see.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Yeah. Right. So we ended up chatting. there. And then as the night was kind of getting done, I had asked her if she was hungry if she wanted to go to eat. And so we went out to like a little Mexican place. Oh. And it was just
Starting point is 00:06:04 you and her that went to the Mexican restaurant? Yeah, it was just the two of us. So, you know, it was a real solid night and then it kind of cooled down. So I had given her my jacket and I had walked her back to her car. And I told her, I said, you know, just hang under the jacket. You know, give it to me next time.
Starting point is 00:06:20 Oh, that's really nice. Was that like a little plan for you to have an inn? It was a little move. Okay. Yeah. How did she react to you walking her to her car and giving her the jacket? Was she like, oh, thank you or was it like... Ew, no.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Well, I don't want this. It's a new day thing. No, I mean, it seemed like polite and it seemed like she was down for it. Good. Okay. But I will say, leaving something behind, oldest trick in the book when it comes to ladies. Right. We know that play.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Well, she definitely knew it because what she is, like, she took the jacket to my buddy's place and dropped it off with him. She's, yeah, head of the game Head of the game Or is she like really sweet And it's just like Oh make sure you give this back to your friend No She's not
Starting point is 00:07:02 Because if you wanted to see him again You'd be like sweet Yeah Now I have a reason to contact him Yeah So I'm just wondering You know what's up What's the reason that I feel like
Starting point is 00:07:14 I'm getting ghosted now I will say your impromptu date Is pretty impressive Yeah Like you were pretty smooth Like prepared with a Mexican restaurant Made it all happen that night That's awesome
Starting point is 00:07:23 I mean, I was trying my best. I was trying my best. Okay, well, we're definitely going to try and help you here in a second, but I do feel like we need maybe a little bit more information because the way you paint it, it's almost too perfect. Like, was there anything weird, anything awkward that happened during the night? Yeah. So really, the only thing that I can think of was, like, around the bonfire,
Starting point is 00:07:44 people were telling, like, scary stories and things like that. And I didn't tell one there. So while we were eating, she had asked me, what's your scary story? Oh, she asked. Okay. And I froze. And the only thing I could think of was not too long ago, the battery on my smoke detector died,
Starting point is 00:08:03 and it started beeping in the middle of the night. And it freaked me out. Oh. Isn't that more of an annoying story than a freaky story? It's not really like a ghost story or anything. That smoke detector died and is talking from the dead. Like I said, I froze just that. And I don't know why I told that story,
Starting point is 00:08:23 But that's the story that, like, I went with. But did you guys laugh about it? Like, we just did? Or? She just kind of stared at me. And, like, we were just eating, like, almost like, oh, this is a scary story. Like, this is that. Maybe she actually was scared by it.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Oh. She was so frightened that she could barely speak. Like, it freaked her out for the entire rest of the time. And now she's worried about what you might say next. Or she was hanging out of bonfire expecting to meet, like, a manly guy. And excuse me. I'm scared of. scared of, I know you're there.
Starting point is 00:08:54 I know, but like, he knows, he knows as well, being scared of fire alarms going off. To be fair, I'm not scared of a fire alarm. I was frightened of a smoke alarm. There are two different things. Because where there's smoke, there's fire. And where there's fire, there's people hooking up. Oh. With him, it's just where there's smoke, there's a dead battery.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Yeah. He's replaced is all it is, Jeff. Okay, well, now I feel like we've got the full picture of the events that unfilking. that unfolded. There was some nice moments. There was some awkward moments. There was some bad storytelling. We'll figure out how it all comes together.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Oh, that was a little low blow. Yeah. And you guys blame me all the time. He's the one that said that he told the bad story. How does it feel to be attacked for what you're saying? It feels like I'm a man. And this man is going to really manly up when we... Thank you, Jose.
Starting point is 00:09:44 We're going to call Alyssa and try and get you your second date update right after this. Thank you. Hold on. Second date update. It was the perfect first date. It had everything, a romantic bonfire, tasty Mexican food, even a little clothing swap action right in the middle. Hello.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Well, he tried. That is, until Dan made his fatal mistake when he told his scariest story about a smoke detector that ran low on battery and wouldn't stop. Don't repeat it, Jeff. I'm going to have nightmares forever. I know, sorry. Should have earmuffed the chill. children if they were listening to that.
Starting point is 00:10:23 And the replacement batteries were nowhere to be found. Oh, no. Now, Dan admits wasn't his best moment. He kind of panicked, though. Couldn't think of a scary story on the spot. I wish he could have laughed it off. Like, that would have made it okay. You know what I mean? Like, if you, if you, that was a moment for you to be self-deprecating
Starting point is 00:10:40 that was just missed. But still, that shouldn't be so bad that Becca returned his jacket the next day to his friend rather than give it to Dan face to face. Yeah. Yeah, get scared for real, buddy. Maybe it wasn't that. Maybe, Dan, it was that you weren't responsible enough to replace the batteries every year.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Oh, that says a lot about him. What do you think about that, Dan? You come across like an irresponsible guy. That's maybe what that's exact. That's what it is. Yeah. I like telling me about maybe to yes. My dad tells me to do it on New Year's Day because then you'll never forget.
Starting point is 00:11:11 That's your battery change day. Make it like your tradition. Yeah. It's kind of funny. Well, this segment has officially hit a new low. Battery advice from Brooks' dad. We should go towards it. Call in.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Need some batteries? Let's talk batteries. God, okay. Smoke detectors? Dan, are you ready to call back here? We got to move forward from this, right, Dan? Yeah, I'm ready. Let it. Let's make it happen. We're just making him relive his trauma over and over again. I was going to go to carbon monoxide.
Starting point is 00:11:38 No. Caller. You just got to make sure you have those as well. Okay, save it for New Year's. That's a silent killer. Save it for New Year's. Let's just go. Here we go. Silent.
Starting point is 00:11:49 I'm just calling Becca right now. Hello? Hey, is this Becca? Who's this? Hey, this is a radio show. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Hey, Becca. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Is this really a radio show? Yeah. Yeah, I know. We exist. That'd be a lame joke. We're doing... We are also a podcast if you wanted to know. No, we're doing a PSA where we're calling everybody in the air.
Starting point is 00:12:21 to make sure that they have changed the batteries inside of their smoke detectors in their home. Have you done that? I don't need to do that. Oh. Oh, okay. Oh, you live in an apartment like me. They change our batteries for us.
Starting point is 00:12:35 That must be nice because apparently that wasn't the case with the guy you went out with recently named Dan. Okay, that was a real sideways for her. Like, she doesn't know why I were calling. It's like a hard laugh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we know the guy, Dan, that you met at the bonfire recently.
Starting point is 00:12:50 Oh. Not guys. Yeah. So he reached out to us about doing this thing called a second date update. We're trying to help him figure out why after you two hung out at the Mexican restaurant and had a pretty good time together, you are not talking to him anymore. Okay. I think he feels like you're really avoiding him because you even brought his jacket back to his buddy instead of giving it back to him. That was kind of a smooth move.
Starting point is 00:13:20 but it kind of backfired Why you said the jacket backfired Yeah Well I put my hand in the pocket When I got home And I found a receipt that was From earlier in the morning The day of that same party
Starting point is 00:13:36 And it was from a grocery store But it was for Kotex and tampons Oh Okay Female products Yeah, feminine Hygiene products. That's how you say it.
Starting point is 00:13:51 I don't even know how to say it. Yeah, feminine hygiene product. Okay. So you're thinking, I mean, I would automatically jump to he's in a relationship. Yeah. Thank you. Exactly. So I called my friend who was the host of that party and I was like, do you know his deal?
Starting point is 00:14:07 Like, what is going on? Yeah. And we were like trying to figure it out. And honestly, we have no clue. Why wouldn't you just ask him then? I could lie if she just asks him. Yeah, but why would he, he contacted us? A huge public radio show.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Well, that's kind of overselling it. I mean... Yeah, that would be weird, so I don't know. Maybe you can ask him. Yeah, I mean, obviously, he had no idea that she would be finding that receipt. He didn't, like, leave it there on purpose. It was totally innocent, and he doesn't care. Like, it didn't even cross his mind.
Starting point is 00:14:38 What is a good answer? He has a female roommate. Yeah. Let's not, like, come up with the answers that we're going to, like, give it to him so we could use it because he is on the phone right now, taking all of this. He's on the phone. I thought he was tracking his mother's cycle. Wait, is this a radio show or is this like a prank with his friends?
Starting point is 00:14:54 No, no, no. He really is listening on the other line waiting to talk to you. Are you serious? Yeah, Dan, this is your moment. Jump in any time. Yeah. Hey, Becca. So, it's for my mom?
Starting point is 00:15:11 That didn't sound like that. Just the way you said it. It's really. Why wouldn't you immediately just say I'm single? I'm so sorry. Okay. I am single and it was for my cousin
Starting point is 00:15:22 You just And your voice keeps going up Every time you say these things, Dan Okay It was for my sister No, Dan You're changing every time Now you're not being honest
Starting point is 00:15:39 Stop messing around What's really going on All right Just be straight with us Yes please I like that we're together now We're a unit now Oh, my God, are we all synced up?
Starting point is 00:15:51 Is that how that works? I still don't know a lot. I'm glad that we have you as a listener now, Becca, but I still want to hear from Dan about what's going on. Okay. So I said the other people, because I'm kind of nervous. I feel like the real answer is worse in a way. Worse than being in a relationship?
Starting point is 00:16:08 Whoa. So here's the, I am single. It's relatively recent. Like, my ex-girlfriend and I still talk. And occasionally, like, I will go over and see her. And it just so happened that she had asked me before I went to go see her earlier that day that I stopped at the store and pick up some stuff for her. What? That does not sound single.
Starting point is 00:16:36 His voice didn't go up at the end, though. So that one kind of sounds real. I feel like when he says recently single, he's like, well, I literally am just texting her right now to break up with her. Why would you be going over to see your ex frequently? I mean, because I'm single. Yeah. They're like friends with benefits now. Like, yeah, I mean, yeah, that's it pretty much at this point.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Okay, so you bend to the relationship but haven't fully detached. That's messy for Becca to join in. Well, does Becky even believe that? I mean, do you believe that he's fully single? Even though, I mean, obviously he still has some ties with his ex. Yeah, and if you do believe it, how does it make you feel to hear that? Well, honestly, I'm kind of. kind of in a similar situation.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Hey, there we go. There's some truth. So wait, you're hooking up with your ex, too? Well, I'm single. He and I are broken up, but occasionally we'll still, you know, like have dinner and we've become like friends with benefits. Well, it's awesome.
Starting point is 00:17:38 You guys know each other and you trust each other. But having dinner and then staying, it sounds like a date. You know, like that's not just. It's a little more intimate than romantic than just. It's elevated friends. with benefits, bro. Oh, it's just a little elevator. Well, I guess my question would be
Starting point is 00:17:53 if you are actively dating someone else, are you still going to be friends with benefits with your ex? I mean, if I'm dating someone and we're exclusive, we're exclusive, that's the way it is. So are we both giving up our exes
Starting point is 00:18:08 to go on another date? You should probably introduce your exes to each other because there might be a connection between those. Everyone can hunk up. Well, they don't want to ruin their fallback plan, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Yeah, got to have them there. I would definitely be willing to stop seeing my ex if I was dating someone, so... Oh, that's cute. Okay. I mean, wow, Dan, aren't you glad that you didn't stick with your whole sister answer? That definitely wouldn't work. You mean sister-cous and mother, your aunt, friend? Yeah, I didn't know what she'd think about it.
Starting point is 00:18:39 It is the truth. Okay. Okay. Well, in that case, we would like to offer to send you two out on another date, and Becca, if you say yes, we are willing to pay for it. Well, yes Okay Oh man You could be in a relationship
Starting point is 00:18:55 Soon with a sweet man Who will do all of your errand running for you That is nice I do love that Can we go for massages? What? Wait what? You want us to pay for massages?
Starting point is 00:19:06 No, girl This is like a dinner date Okay, yeah Dinner date is a better idea Yeah Ask him, he can massage you I don't know I was just a little
Starting point is 00:19:14 I jumped ahead You jumped ahead into what gift certificates we had available to us. Dan, you can be in charge of the massage itself, like, right? Deal. Okay. Just don't let any romantic candles around it with that smoke detector. That's false. You've got to be careful, dude.
Starting point is 00:19:32 I won't wait until New Year's to change the smoke detector batteries for you. I don't think she heard that part of the segment, so she doesn't know what you're talking about. It also wasn't the one that was scared. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
