It's not very often that we get a life or death moment in one of these stories. And it actually happened today. So definitely stay around for this one. It's definitely wild.
Starting point is 00:03:00 What do you see on the comment section, Alexis? Yeah, Alex from the U.K. said, I love your content. I'm 22 and just bought my first house. So now I can listen to you guys full volume on the speakers. Is that what you could do in the U.K.? I don't know. Is real estate affordable? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Let's be honest. You have a rich mommy and daddy. Wait a minute. Is that the king? Is the king texting in? All right. Well, thank you for being here. Wherever you are in the world, we just think it's so cool.
Starting point is 00:03:26 We appreciate it. Please, like and support. and enjoy the brand new second date update second date update sometimes the success or failure of a first date all comes down to what you do in one crucial moment
Starting point is 00:03:43 like when they ask oh so how soon do you want kids and you answer by unzipping your pants or that's soon when he leans in for the first kiss and you cough directly into his mouth The timing.
Starting point is 00:04:00 It all can come down to one moment, and one of our listener wrote us an email saying she thinks she blew it in the most critical moment of their first date. Yikes. She feels absolutely terrible about it. Her name is Lola. So Lola, welcome to the show. Hi. Oh, man. Lola, it can't be as bad as Jeff's examples, right?
Starting point is 00:04:22 I mean, it was kind of bad, but you guys can judge how bad it was. Okay. Free invitation to judge, fun. Yeah, this is going to be fun. So take us back to the very beginning of the day. What's the guy's name? How did you guys meet? So his name is Jeremiah.
Starting point is 00:04:37 We met online and kind of to set the scene of like what happened. He picked me up. Oh. So I got in his car and turned on the radio and it was my favorite artist, Shaboozy, that came on. Oh. That's your favorite. Yeah. So I turned it up.
Starting point is 00:04:57 up um he didn't seem to like the song as much like i was kind of dancing a little bit but you turned up the volume in his car that's a big deal yeah well the song's already on she didn't change the song i know but it's just touching someone's stereo when you the very first time you've been in a car i guess i didn't like think of it that way i just looked at him with a smile and then like i was just like woo i don't know you're trying to have fun in the moment okay what was his reaction Yeah, yeah. He just kind of like laughed a little, but then, like, when I was dancing, he said he wasn't, like, dancing along with the song. Like, it didn't seem like it was a big deal for him. I don't know. But that wasn't the big thing. Okay. The big thing was when we got to the restaurant, and by the way, this is like a, like a crab shack. Oh, cute. Oh, I love those places.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Do they pour it on the table and stuff, like a boil? Yeah, yeah. Well, and, you know, you get these bibs to wear. Yeah. That's quite a romantic scene. But that's part of the fun. You both don't think silly. You both have mallets. You're licking your fingers. There's a lot of, like, sucking and slurping noises for our first day. I guess so. I can't believe you don't like that, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:06:07 I'm not saying that I don't, but I understand a lot of people, it's kind of a strong image for the very first makeup. You see a girl suck a head off of a crawfish. Well, I always wanted to go. Oh, you've never been. Where was the bad part of that? Okay, so Jeremiah, like, all of a sudden, at one point, he's standing. at one point he stands up really quick and his chair falls down
Starting point is 00:06:28 and his eyes are going really big and it took me a few seconds but then I was like I was like oh my gosh he might be choking Oh my God What'd you do? Well I tried a few things I was like and I was like hitting him in the back
Starting point is 00:06:44 But this other girl like came out of nowhere She pushed me out of the way And gave him the high maneuver Yeah It saved him yeah and it was like crazy the whole thing was crazy and his life was flashing before his eyes like mine was too in a way yeah that's terrifying to have somebody like choking right in front of you yeah life or death situation not to mention that crab is probably really expensive it'd be ashamed to waste it oh man if that was a king crab you better have picked it back up off the floor yeah was he okay was he okay and was the crab still eatable well i don't know about the crab but he was okay Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:07:23 You know, obviously, he didn't feel like eating anymore. Oh, he didn't just sort of dipping it in butter. That's where the date ended? Well, yeah, he basically, he paid the bill and we left, and he drove me back home. And, like, the whole car ride, I was just like, hell, that was crazy. And he's just, like, still somber. He's like, yeah, I know. And we pretty much just drove home in silence the rest of the way.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Did you guys kiss when you parked? Did you kiss? No, we did not kiss. I was kidding. No shiboozy. on the drive back? No, no. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:56 She's like, this could use a double shout of whiskey, am I right? So just going back to your email, you think you blew it on the date because you didn't know how to properly do the Heimlich? Is that what you meant by your email? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I just, I feel like I didn't know what to do and I just want to redo. No, I was him choking. I don't think you did the, I mean, you didn't do the wrong thing. You did something, right? Like you hit him on the back.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Yeah. And you are supposed, I just finished my first day course, you're supposed to bend someone over at a 90 degree angle and then hit him on the back five times and then you bring him up and then you... Okay, that's CPR after dark, brook. That's the heimlich. Right between the shoulder blades.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Everyone's supposed to wear leather for it, right? Okay, I've been in that class. Maybe that's it. Maybe he just doesn't want to, like, rehash that night with you, you know? Like you're forever connected to it. At least you didn't pull out your phone and start taking a video. You know, you do something.
Starting point is 00:08:52 I don't know. Did she not take out her phone and take a video? You're right. Lola? No, I did not. Okay. You hesitated for a second there. You had to think about it. No, no, I just, I thought of that image and I was like, who would do that?
Starting point is 00:09:04 Okay. Fair. We have been burned before by not asking these types of questions before we make the call, so we're just trying to cover all the bases here. And how long has it been since Jeremiah's choking incident? It's been a week and a half. Let's call it their first date. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Now, why are we holding a job? Well, okay. We'll rename the segment then. Sounds like if we get a second date, though, we're going to need to send a lifeguard with him. Yeah, possibly. Somebody to step in just in case an emergency happens. A medical professional.
Starting point is 00:09:32 They could take Brooks course. Yeah, maybe he said Brooke with him. Everyone should get CPR and first aid service. Yeah. First, we just need him to say yes to a second date when we come back, call him and do it right after this. Hold on. Second date update. Most of the time, when somebody's like,
Starting point is 00:09:49 hey let's head over to the choking party it's a good thing no at least in my life no one said that yeah you get a little shabuzi going restrict some airways just see what happens but the reason i bring it up is because lola went on a date that wasn't supposed to be a choking party it turned out to be though when her guy what i'm serious i love the angle you're taking yeah i love parties darted yeah don't even exist they exist they exist and you guys just aren't being invited to them and i'm glad you're not because i don't like your attitude towards that. This poor man had his life flashed before his eyes. Jeremiah is the man.
Starting point is 00:10:25 He got a little crab meat stuck in his throat. Lola didn't know what to do, so started hitting him on his back. Until another woman shoved in and gave him the heimlich. It's always so amazing when there's someone with medical experience. Just right when you need him. It's amazing. The positive to that is the woman saved Jeremiah's life. That's a pretty big positive.
Starting point is 00:10:45 The negative, though, is she kind of stole Lola's thunder. So, Lola, is there anything that you want to say to the selfish woman who stole your spotlight if she's listening to this? No, no, I'm grateful that she saved him. Are you? Because he's not calling you back now. No, I mean, Lola, have you reached out to him? I mean, it's an easy, like, oh, my God, how are you doing? I did, and no response. You said the date ended pretty quickly after that.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Does any part of you think maybe he choked on purpose as an excuse in order to call him out? No, no. I don't think. He flew up and the chair flew back and he wasn't breathing in his mouth, right? Grabbing his throat and turning purple. You're describing another choking party to me and I'm liking it. And we will assume that he choked for real and that something is going on in his life that's making him not want to call you back. But here we go. I'm going to dial Jeremiah.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Let's see if he answers. Thank you. All right. Hold on. Here we go. Hello? Hey, is this Jeremiah? yeah speaking hey man uh you are speaking right now to a entire radio show called brooke and geoffrey in the morning
Starting point is 00:11:57 hey jeremiah what up good morning uh okay yeah yeah sorry weird huh i know this is probably pretty random but we're doing a segment on our show it's called a second date update and we'd really like to hear your side of the story that we just got what are you guys talking about basically We know somebody that you went on a date with recently, a woman named Lola. She called you guys? Yeah. Because she just wants to know why after your hangout, you don't want to see her again? Or she says you're not really making an effort in like the week and a half since it happened.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And we don't know what's going on on your end. I mean, yeah, we haven't talked since that night. Right. Were you planning on calling her? Uh, no. Okay. Oh, man. Is there something specific that's holding you back from doing so?
Starting point is 00:12:53 I mean, I don't really know what she told you guys about what happened, but it was a nightmare. Yeah, it sounded like that. I mean, we heard some pretty crazy stuff happened that night. Yeah. But Lola just wants to know why after all of it went down, you don't want to go out with her again or you're not really making an effort to talk to her anymore. she's just a little bit confused. Yeah, she tried to kill me. What?
Starting point is 00:13:22 Wait, what? What are you? That is a huge, huge accusation. What are you talking? You know like you later? No, I'm dead serious. I started choking on a piece of crab. I'm giving them the universal sign for choke and I got two hands on my throat.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Yeah. And she just, she comes up and starts trying to make out with me. Excuse me what? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. She told us that she came over after a few seconds because she was so stunned and started hitting you on the back. I mean, eventually she came around behind me and started, like, bashing me in the back with one of the crab mallets. With a mallet. Oh, okay, wait, we heard that she was trying to help you hit you in the back.
Starting point is 00:14:07 We didn't hear about using a crab mallet. We didn't ask. Dude, that could, like, hurt me again. After or before the kissing? That was after. She's blowing air into my windpipe, which is stuffing the thing down, like, I can't breathe. She's doing like mouth to mouth. She doesn't know that's out of CPR now.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Well, it's actually back in if you're certified. It sounds like, and she even told us this directly, that she was really panicked in that moment and she didn't know how to help you. Yeah, so it sounds like it's not a sexual makeout session. It's just a she was trying to help. Like, I don't think she was actually trying to kiss you. I don't know what the hell. she was doing.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Okay. Well, you know what? Fair. The best thing to do probably is just ask her what she was doing because she is on the other line of this call waiting to talk to you. Are you serious? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:57 I think she's there. Hey, Jeremiah. Oh, my gosh. Hey. Yeah, that's Lola. It sounds really bad and I guess it was like worse than I thought. But maybe next time we could just do milkshakes where you're not choking. Hold on, Lola.
Starting point is 00:15:17 He was saying that when he started choking, you went up and tried to kiss him. Is that true? No, no, no. No, I was trying to give him CPR. I've never been. Standing up CPR? That's not what do you do CPR. I just froze.
Starting point is 00:15:32 I just panicked. Well, you didn't freeze. You did something. Yeah. At least you didn't run away, too. That would have been worse. You did go super smash bros on his back with the crab mallet, so that was kind of cool. Oh, girl.
Starting point is 00:15:43 I mean, I needed to do something. But I knew I couldn't hit him that hard. So I just, you know what, I thought the mallet would be quicker, like, harder. You know, that makes sense. My someone else saw what was happening. This is like, pushed her out of the way. Right. But why were you just blowing into my mouth and, like, holding onto my cheek?
Starting point is 00:16:01 The visual of it. No, I, I heard that, like, if you blow the food, it can come out or something. Or maybe that's what I thought. I don't know. Oh, you're trying to blow it down into your tummy. Oh, my gosh. Lola told us that the ride home was very silent and awkward between you two. Was that whole situation because you were mad at her?
Starting point is 00:16:21 Or were you just shocked by what had just happened? I was totally shocked. I had never choked before in my life. Yeah, none of that serious. I thought he was in the car with this killer, Jeff. Right. But unless I say, the more chances I have of surviving. Don't make any sudden movements.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Look, Jeremiah, I'm just thankful you're alive. Even if we don't do a second date, like, I hope you know that that's not. not what I was trying to do. I was trying to save you. Okay. She may not have, but she tried. That is sweet. It actually, she's sincere on that, Jeremiah. I mean, you could understand, like, if you were in her position, the panic would definitely be there.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I completely understand. I was panicking, too. My life flashed before my eyes. I get it. Yeah. But, yeah, I mean, we all agree. Even Lola is admitting she did a bad job in her life-saving attempt, but the effort was there. And if it had it been for her clubbing your back with that crab mallet,
Starting point is 00:17:14 the other lady wouldn't have known to run over and give you the heimlich. Yeah, I think of her more as, like, fun girl in the car that likes a dance. To Shibuzi sometimes, even. Less person that will save your life. Yeah. I fucking hate that song. Okay. Okay, take out the Shibuzi, then.
Starting point is 00:17:30 And now that everything is out in the open, we would like to offer to send the two of you out on another day with hopefully zero choking involved, and we would pay for it. Oh, gosh. Jeff hasn't made a promise like that in a long time. I know. I don't know who would want something like that, but maybe you do, Jeremiah, what do you think about giving Lola one more chance? I mean, she sounds genuinely remorseful and terrible about the way things unfolded. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Look, I appreciate that. I just, I kind of feel like if you're on a first date and you almost die, it's probably not a good sign. Oh. Oh, you live, though. If you died, it's not a good thing. Yeah, I agree with Jose on that one. And inexperience could bond people.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Yeah, we could send you to one of those air bars. where they just put, like, air up your nose, you know, talking about? The oxygen bars. Yeah, oxygen bars. Those were huge in the 2010s. Yeah. Jeremiah, you're saying that this was a sign from the universe that you're not meant to be with Lola.
Starting point is 00:18:25 I think it was a sign from God. Wow. Well, excuse me. That seems a little dramatic. Totally different. All right. Well, Lola, is there anything that you want to say to Jeremiah while we still have them on the phone?
Starting point is 00:18:37 Or God. Yeah. I mean, explain to him, so. No, I just want to say, seeing that you think this is a sign, you're right. And I would want to see with someone who enjoy Shibuzi. Oh, that's your sign. We all have different signs. God speaks in weird ways sometimes. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Hey, it's Ed Helms and welcome back to Snafu, my podcast about history's greatest screw-ups. On our new season, we're bringing you a new snafu every single
Starting point is 00:19:09 episode. 32 lost nuclear weapons. Wait, stop? What? Yeah. Ernie Shackleton sounds like a solid 70s basketball player. Who still wore knee pads. Yes. It's going to be a whole lot of history, a whole lot of funny, and a whole lot of guests. The great Paul Shear made me feel good. I'm like, oh, wow. Angela and Jenna, I am so psyched. You're here. What was that like for you to soft launch into the show? Sorry, Jenna, I'll be asking the questions today. I forgot whose podcast we were doing. Nick Kroll, I hope this story is good enough to get you to toss that sandwich. So let's see how it goes.
Starting point is 00:19:51 Listen to season four of Snap-Fu with Ed Helms on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In the new podcast, Hell in Heaven, two young Americans move to the Costa Rican jungle to start over. One will end up dead. The other tried for murder. Not once. People went wild. Not twice.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Stunned. But three times. John and Anne Bender are rich and attractive, and they're devoted to each other. They create a nature reserve and build a spectacular, circular home, high on the top of a hill. But little by little, their dream starts to crumble.
Starting point is 00:20:38 and our couple retreat from reality. They lose it. They actually lose it. They sort of went nuts. Until one night, everything spins out of control. Listen to Hell in Heaven on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A lot of lessons we could take out of that phone call. Maybe number one, most importantly, don't try mouth-to-mouth on something. someone who's actively in the middle of choking.
Starting point is 00:21:11 I mean, unless they've already passed out and they're on the floor, then you actually should. You should administer CPR at that point. But they're passed out, Brooke. Yeah, if they're still standing, mouth-to-mouth isn't... Not if they're still conscious. Number two, if they don't like Shaboozy, that's a sign from God. You can't take a first-aid class to fix that. And finally, if you start choking mid-dinner date, that's God's way of telling you you deserve to find someone
Starting point is 00:21:38 better. So this second day was so divine. It really was. A lot of cosmic signs happening. And if you're listening to this right now, that's probably God telling you you need to subscribe to our podcast. Oh, yeah. Unless you choked.
Starting point is 00:21:52 If you don't believe in God, then it's just us telling us that you should subscribe to the podcast. Yeah, yeah. We'd like that. Don't make God or us angry. The universe will come back to bite you if you don't find us online wherever you get your podcast at Broken Jeffrey. Hey, it's Ed Helms host of Snafu. My podcast about history's greatest source.
