And this January, we're going to go on the road to beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada, to cover the Consumer Electronics Show, tech's biggest conference. Better Offline CES coverage won't be the usual rundown of the hottest gadgets or biggest trends, but an unvarnished look at what the tech industry plans to sell or do to you in 2025.
Starting point is 00:01:29 I'll be joined by David Roth of Defector and the writer Edward Ongueso Jr. With guest appearances from Behind the Bastards' Robert Evans, It Could Happen Here's Gare Davis, and a few surprise guests throughout the show. Listen to Better Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you get your podcasts from. Second Date Update. We had somebody else booked to do a call with right now, but they dropped out at the last second. They did? They didn't want to do a second date with us?
Starting point is 00:02:01 I guess they got too busy or Brooke scared them away. I don't know. Probably Brooke. I don't mean to. So we had a stack of emails to choose from who we should talk to. And who am I going to go with? Some random Joe Blow who claims he met his dream girl at an abandoned blockbuster during a solar eclipse? This is awesome. That was so specific.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Kind of boring. I love that. Or do I go with a super fan of our show named Kayla who gave me very little information about her actual date but says she loves us? Okay. I'm going with the super fan. Kayla, welcome to the show. Oh, my God. Hi, Kayla.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Hi. Did you even go on a date with anybody, Kayla? Who cares, Jose? Oh, my God. I want to go on a date with all of you. That's what I want to do. Tell us about what you love about the show. That's all I want to hear. Guys, it's not stroke or ego hour.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Oh, I like that hour. We can do that after that, after we're done with this. Oh my God, I'm just so excited right now. So are we, Kayla. So are we. Us too, yeah. I need more coffee. Let's all take a breath, and why don't we talk about the guy that you went out with.
Starting point is 00:03:02 What's his name? Okay, his name is Dean. Okay. All right. And where did we meet Dean? What's his name? Okay. His name is Dean. Okay. All right. And where did we meet Dean? Let's take a look. Online. Online.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Uh-huh. And we agreed to have a drink together. And so I was a little late when I got there. And it was super crowded. And I couldn't find him anywhere. I was, like, doing the, like, circling around. And I got a little bit panicked that maybe he bailed on me like some of the others have. Oh.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Oh, Kayla, who would bail on you? Yeah. See why I love you? That's right, Kayla. I'd never bail on you. So what happened? Anyway, I finally saw him, like recognized him. And he was way over in the corner.
Starting point is 00:03:45 And he waved me over and I went over there and he just gave me the biggest hug. It was like so nice. It was like the best hug I've ever gotten in my whole life. It's kind of like my grandpa used to give me, but I didn't say that to him. I don't like that. Hopefully you didn't tell him that. Like, no, this is just like grandpa. Oh, you smell like wood.
Starting point is 00:04:06 God, and your skin's so thin. He is so funny. Now I kind of feel like she's mocking us. Yeah, I know. Oh, my God, no, never. Okay. So were you as excited to see Dean as he was obviously excited to see you? Yeah, I really was, and he was
Starting point is 00:04:25 really charming. You know what? He was like you, Brooke. He was like a male version of you. He was like super funny, super clever. Brooke's not charming, though. What? No, she's not charming. Did he tell you what to order off the menu? I don't do that either. That's Jose's MO, okay? You go to
Starting point is 00:04:44 dinner with him. That is true. You don't even look at the menu. I got it. I feel like I'm a very good listener. That's Jose's MO. You go to dinner with him. That is true. You don't even look at the menu. I got it. I feel like I'm a very good listener. Thank you very much. Sure. Let's go back to the dinner. What happened? It was really just drinks. Afterwards, I went back to his place because he just seemed so great. Okay, now we're sounding more like Brooke on the first first day here we go i can play both roles very well okay okay like brooke i'm surprised you
Starting point is 00:05:11 waited and you got home i know did it feel just like a one night hookup though like a one night stand not at all not at all it's like we talked about life stuff and our dreams and our goals like it was really It was really nice. Did you end up staying the whole night over at his place? I did. The next morning, he was total gentleman. He even drove me home. It was wonderful.
Starting point is 00:05:38 He could easily just order an Uber or something for you. They make you pay for an Uber. Yeah. Alexis, you and I going to pay for an Uber. Alexis, you and I need to go out together for sure. We should party because I think that I could introduce you to some great guys. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Okay. We're grandmas. I'm kind of scared. Okay. So, I mean, obviously this all sounds great. What do you think went wrong? Oh, I didn't think anything went wrong. Yeah, why'd you jump to something went wrong?
Starting point is 00:06:03 Well, she's on the, she called us for a second date.'s obviously not seeing him he's not calling her we don't know that what's happened since the date ended she emailed us well let's let's ask about it bro so we've been texting each other and like you know we've been sort of like saying well i've been saying we should get together again like maybe just some kind of midweek get together after work or something but you know he doesn't seem to be like he's not saying no, but he's not like moving forward at all.
Starting point is 00:06:31 So I just thought maybe y'all could help. Help it along a little bit. No one could say no to you. Well, you've obviously not listened enough then. People say no to us. There's thousands of women I could introduce you to that have said no. Oh my God, when are you going to do your next song of the week?
Starting point is 00:06:49 Probably on a Friday. No pressure. You are so talented. It's like, that's my favorite thing. You're really cute. I got to say, you are cute. Jeffree's face is really red right now. I don't do well with compliments, so let's just move past this moment and play a song.
Starting point is 00:07:10 You say thank you, Jeffrey. Thank you. We'll be right back. Yeah, we'll be back after this song. Thank you. Hold on. If you're just joining us, we're talking to a big fan of our show named Kayla, who went out with a guy the other night named Dean.
Starting point is 00:07:23 They had drinks together. She spent the night at his place. And afterwards, though, it's been a little bit tough arranging another meetup. So she wants our help. And before we make this call, Kayla, I just want to ask, because we do talk to a lot of people with this segment. Not all of them are super fans like yourself. Did you bring up our show at all on the date?
Starting point is 00:07:44 Because if you did, it may have hurt you. yourself, did you bring up our show at all on the date? Because if you did, it may have hurt you. I mean, Dean may have listened afterwards and thought, oh, God, you listen to this trash? You know, it's hard for me not to talk about it because I am like, I'm a pretty big fan, as you said. But the funny thing is, like, I didn't talk about it too much because he wasn't as familiar. And every time I started to tell his story, I would just laugh so hard. It was like I was going to almost pee my pants.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Well, and remember, he did. He did invite her back. Are you? Yeah. You went back to his place. Right. So I could have been too obnoxious about it, right? Yeah. We were in a total turnoff is what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:08:25 But maybe he just did that to get her to shut up about us. See, that's what I mean. That makes me laugh so hard. Yeah, I mean, it's impossible. I actually get it. I don't think so, though. You know, we're all pulling for you here, Kayla. We're going to call Dean right now.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Are you ready? Yeah, you're the best. Oh, yes, he is. He's so uncomfortable. I don't like the comfort. This is so simple, Jeffrey. dean right now are you ready yeah you're the best i'm not used to that so thank you thank you um let's just dial the number here we go Hello? Hey, is this Dean? Yeah. Hey.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Hey, Dean. Oh, no. My name's Jeff from the radio show Broken Jeffrey in the Morning. What's going on? You are to the point, sir, and we like that. You're a man that's good with his words. You're not. You're not.
Starting point is 00:09:23 I know. That's why I'm so impressed. Anyway, we're doing a segment that we do on our show called the second date update that's where oh no oh no i uh no i just went out with a girl who was talking about this yeah okay i think that we may be talking about the same person yeah oh yeah i she loves you guys okay yeah well you know what she also she also said she really likes you Oh, yeah. She loves you guys. Okay. Still not quite sure. Yeah. You know what? She also said she really likes you. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And that's why she emailed us about you. Her name's Kayla. Right. Is that the girl you were thinking about? Yeah. I mean, she said you guys had still been texting after your night together. I'm sorry. What did she tell you? What do you know? Well, so that's what this segment is all about. It's where we help our listeners get back in touch with someone after they've been ghosted following a good date.
Starting point is 00:10:12 So Kayla told us about the night that you two had together, and it seemed like it was a really good time. Okay, but I didn't ghost her. I mean, we've texted back and forth. Right, so maybe I misspoke there. She's been having a hard time getting another hangout with you, and she doesn't understand why. I mean, I don't want to be a jerk, but I, you know, we had our date, and then she immediately texted me about hanging out the very next night. And I had a work thing, and then she texted me, what about the next night or the next night or the next night or the next
Starting point is 00:10:46 night? And she, I mean, again, I don't, I don't want to be a jerk, but it just seems like she's sort of available to you. Well, I mean, but that's the thing that sucks. She's just like, she's available because she's excited. Well, to me, the whole available thing just seems kind of clingy. I mean, we met each other once and she's already blowing up my phone. It's just too much too fast.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Too forward, huh? Clingy? This is what the kids call thirsty. Okay. Clingy? Uh-oh. Dean? I think you need to slow your roll a little bit there.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Okay. Kayla, you jumped in a little quick. You know how this works. You're supposed to wait. Yeah. But you know what? He's saying that I paid too much attention to him a little quick. You know how this works. You're supposed to wait. But you know what? He's saying that I paid too much attention to him. I mean, that's what guys want, right? I mean, that's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Well, some guys, not all guys. So, Dean, I got to obviously let you know that's Kayla. She's been listening the whole time. What if it wasn't Kayla? What's going on? Are you guys setting me up or something? Oh, no. Poor Dean. Well, we wanted guys setting me up for something? Oh no, poor Dean. Well, we wanted to set you up for
Starting point is 00:11:48 another date with Kayla, hopefully. We were hoping we could find some middle ground between you guys. Okay, so you guys wanted to set it up so she could attack me, huh? No. No. Not at all, man. I mean, we're just trying to get some clarity because she didn't understand what was going on after
Starting point is 00:12:04 your date happened. And you can understand why she'd be a little bit confused because it's hard to know what a guy wants sometimes we're not the best communicators thank you jeff i mean that you totally get me and that's totally why you're my favorite on the show yeah thanks okay but uh but dean like, like some guys do like having more attention from women. Some guys want to be like catered to and taken care of. Other guys prefer it the other way. You just have to communicate that to her. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Yeah, I think she should find one of those guys who needs that and maybe doesn't have as much going on. Okay. Dean, slow down because you were, I mean, obviously you were into her in some capacity because like you guys talked when you had drinks you went back to your place like you even drove her home in the morning like it sounds like you were a real gentleman and that's good and you respected her then and it doesn't feel like you do now and i don't understand again i'm not trying
Starting point is 00:13:01 to be a jerk i it just doesn't seem like we're a good match i need someone with a little more going on in their own life because I'm a busy guy. I can't have someone glomming on to me. I'm not at that place. Glomming on? What was that hug? What kind of signals are you sending? I guess it's more than a hug. Are you asking about the night?
Starting point is 00:13:19 That's a good point. I mean, the signals are all over the place. I don't understand. You seem to be into it. She's raising some pretty good points, Dean. Okay, well, this is my best signal to you. No thank you. Wow.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Wow, dude. Wow. That's like really cold after. You know what, Dean? You should just be quiet right now and just let Jeff talk. Yeah, talk, Jeff. Say something. I mean, Dean, I understand.
Starting point is 00:13:45 I don't know what to say. Dean, you probably feel a little ganged up on right now, and maybe that's why you're being so kind of defensive about this. Get the Brooke and Jeffrey gang on you. But isn't it nice to have someone that isn't playing games? I mean, this feels like a game. I don't know how you're proving you're not clingy by getting a radio station to gang up on me. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Oh, my God. This is not just a radio station. Let's just make that clear. Yeah, we're the best morning show in this local area. Let her say it. It doesn't sound as good coming from us. Honestly, it feels like she's clinging on to all of you. Do you hear her?
Starting point is 00:14:21 Yeah, but I like it. I like it, too. This is called communicating, Dean. Yeah, Dean. You should listen to Jeff. He knows what he's talking about. I'm kind of getting tired of the Jeff comments, honestly. Someone's getting jealous.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I'm just saying. He doesn't need more praise. Alexis, you're still new on the show, so you don't really appreciate him like you should. But you will grow. We tell her that every day right because because it will it will just grow and grow you'll just appreciate more and more just how he is i mean it's great caleb but i thought you should be talking to dean you want me to talk to the guy who already just said he wasn't interested? I mean, Brooke, hello.
Starting point is 00:15:06 This is not going anywhere. And you know what? This whole thing about the second date, I'm kind of thinking that maybe we should propose a first date with, like, Jeff or even Jose. Hey, what's up? Or a second choice. Not the last choice, but a second choice. I am so not clingy.
Starting point is 00:15:23 I mean, I think that we would hit it off. I think we do a threesome date. Yeah. You're not clingy if you say you're not clingy. I'm unavailable. Oh, come on. Emotionally unavailable, physically, professionally, spiritually. I'm just unavailable.
Starting point is 00:15:39 You were just telling Dean he should open his mind to different opportunities. But see the different way he said it? It's funny when he says it. I appreciate you, Kayla. Do you guys still need me on this call, or can I go? I don't need you, Dean. I'll tell you that. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:16:00 So are you balanced? Do you even ask? No, I don't want. Kayla doesn't want me to ask. You have to ask. It's the rules of the show. Do you ask yourself? No, I don't want... Kayla doesn't want me to ask. You have to ask. It's the rules of the show. Do you ask yourself then, Jeffrey? As a super fan of the show,
Starting point is 00:16:11 Jeff, you can totally ask for yourself and Jose. We can just do a three-way hangout. It doesn't even have to be romantic. I would be so happy. She's into it, Jeff. You got one yes, it sounds like, from Jose. All right. Well, you got to it, Jeff. You got one yes, it sounds like, from Jose. All right. Well, you got to ask, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Jose, would you like to go out and hang with Kayla for a little bit? As long as you're there as well, yes. Jeff, wait a minute, Jeff. It all depends on Jeff. Okay, well, I guess we'll say our answer is on three. Okay. One, two, three. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I don't know. Yes. Okay. We'll think about it. You're killing me. We'll get him to think about it. Is he still your favorite? Best two out of three.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Best two out of three. We don't have time, Kayla. It's so funny. No matter what, we love you, okay? Oh, thank you. Oh, wow. Okay, I think we should hang up. All right, let's just play some music.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Ugh, we're so done with New Year, New You. This year, it's more you on Bumble.
