Starting point is 00:02:46 This Spotify wrapped has got us just in the feels. Yeah. All your comments and all your love. Honestly, it reminds us why we do this. And that is so cool. Somebody asked me how many minutes I have lived. listen to our show. Yes. All of them. I was like, I literally, it's not in my top. And they were shocked. I'm like, I do the show. You think I'd go home and listen after? But these people
Starting point is 00:03:05 beat us because they listen back years and years and years. So they actually win. They know us more than us. Yeah. Absolutely. Well, welcome to the second date podcast. Thank you so much for being here. Before we get to a brand new update, update, remember the way this works is we're going to air the original time that the couple was on the show. And then in part three, we're going to have them back on the phone to see what's happened since. And there's going to be a little commercial. in between. So listen to it, script that, you know, whatever you want. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly. And comment. Yes, Cindy said, Spotify says I'm in the top
Starting point is 00:03:37 1% of second date update listeners. At this point, I'm emotionally invested in strangers who can't text back. Yep, that's it. That's the whole thing. Love from South Africa. Oh, that's so cool. Yeah. That's the other cool thing. We've reached over 165 countries this year, which is crazy. I didn't even know there was that many. I was like, there's like 20. I love looking at the list of there's like two listeners in one country. And I'm like, I need to meet those two people. Absolutely. So thank you again for being here.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Your brand new update update starts right now. Sometimes at the end of a nice dinner date, your waiter will come and say something that just makes you feel both like really, really good. Oh, you know, like you two make a really cute couple. Oh, that would be nice. You are my favorite table tonight by far. I think he's telling the truth. Gosh, I would love to secretly film you two kissing. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:04:30 That's a cute couple. That's nice. Well, it went a little bit differently for the people on the phone with us today. They got maybe the most awkward, cringe comment a server could possibly say to a couple at the end of their night. And yet still, they made it through. And they are back to give us a special second date, update, update. And who knows what comment will say at the end of it. You're going to hear it right after this.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Second Date Update. Brooke, what's that filter that you like to use on Instagram to make yourself look like 15 years younger? There's no filter, sweetheart. It's just life. Oh, it's the FaceTime filter that you pay extra for because the live filtering on the videos, that costs a lot more. I don't use a filter, Jeff. Sure, yeah. FaceTime is, you mean FaceTune, I think, is actually what you mean.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Whatever. It's right. It's broken Jeffrey in the morning. Man behind the mic over there. But I only bring it up because in today's second date update, age was at the forefront of the conversation. At least in the email that I just read from our listener, Phil. And I heard from experience that people get a little spicy when you talk about age, Jeff. A little bit.
Starting point is 00:05:44 But apparently, he is worried that it may have been a factor during his date, so let's talk to him. Phil, Phil, welcome to the show. Can you hear me? Talking to the bottom part of the phone. I'm not, okay, so here's what happened. Okay, we haven't asked you that question yet, Phil. Actually, you're going to a little quick. Can you take us off speaker phone, Phil?
Starting point is 00:06:08 Here we go. Is that better? That's way better. Hey, Phil. Good job, man. You can teach old dogs new tricks. All right, man. Officially, welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:06:16 How you doing today? Doing good, doing good. Are you? After all of that, you still like us. And you even sound younger off-speaker. You're really shocking. So, let's go straight to your job. date here. Tell us about the girl that you
Starting point is 00:06:30 met recently. What's her name? Mandy. Mandy. Okay. Good. And am I guessing you didn't meet Mandy on the app? I did meet Mandy on the app. Oh, you did? Okay. Was it the app Coffee meets Metamusel? Jeff, that's low. That's too low.
Starting point is 00:06:47 No, it was Tinder, asshole. Oh, yeah. I deserve that. I like Phil spicy. Yeah. That's good. That's good, Phil. Okay. So, uh, walk us through the meeting. and the meet-up with Mandy? Yes, so we went to this really great seafood spot. Oh, that's cool. It's a dinner date.
Starting point is 00:07:06 And what were you feeling beforehand? Were you nervous, excited? Yeah, you know, recently divorced. It's been a long time since I had a first date. So I was a little nervous. Congratulations on getting back out there. Thank you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Okay. Nice to hear something nice. Yeah. Eventually we become kind. We actually got your back, Phil. We got your back. That's good. So you go to the seafood restaurant where food is easy to chew, and how did it go?
Starting point is 00:07:33 The conversation's good. There is some talk about social media. I thought it was really interesting. She really liked the TikTok. I'm more of a Facebook guy. I actually downloaded it. She got me, you know, interested in no matter what, I'm going to thank Mandy for that. That's good.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Were you guys able to connect over other things? Yeah, you know, we talked about a lot of stuff. It goes really good. talked about like our first concerts. Oh, I bet that was a big difference. Mine was Erosmith in 89 when Rock was real. Okay. Okay. And
Starting point is 00:08:07 hers? Hers was in fact Ariana Grande. Okay. Okay. That does show her age a little bit. But hey, like we said, you were honest. You knew what she was getting into. Yeah, that's good. And the fact that you're connecting is a great sign, no matter what it is you're talking about. As long as the conversation is going smoothly, that's perfect.
Starting point is 00:08:25 So take us to the end of the date. How did you wrap it up? So that was where it got a little embarrassing. Uh-oh. Okay. What happened? A little embarrassing. The waiter came to give us our bill. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:08:38 And then he said, we hope you and your daughter have enjoyed this meal. Oh, no. That is embarrassing. So now you're in a tough position because you can either let it slide and just brush it off or you confront the situation head on and tell them, no. Or you just start making out and really freak the way. Later out. That's option.
Starting point is 00:09:00 If she was my daughter, would I do this? How did you handle it, Phil? You know, sometimes you just have to take it on the chin. Did you get any read on her reaction to that moment? Not really. I was a little taken aback. I was a little embarrassed myself. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Okay. So you think when you're out, someone older, you expect it? Like, everybody plays that game where you see a couple like that out, and you're like, you think they're a couple or just a dad and daughter. Yeah. Maybe you see people in line. Yeah. Actually, sometimes it's fun to play that game.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Like, it's a gold digger situation or they're like, So Okay. Have you reached out to her since a date? I have. I just haven't heard back. And I don't want to be one of those people that over text, you know? What are you doing? Are you just doing straight phone calls? I can text. Oh, really? We're acting like he's 85 years old. He doesn't sound not alike. You've got to be in like your 50s or something, right? Your 60s. No comment. No.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Okay. Hey, all right. Well, a lot of times a good way to, like, reach people now is through DMs. Yeah, just a picture. He called a radio station. He's cool enough to listen to our show. We're going to call her. It's just because we're calling from a random number, she might not pick up when we dial her.
Starting point is 00:10:12 But maybe she will. Maybe she'll give us a chance, and we can talk to her and hopefully get an answer for why she hasn't called you back to hang out again. Because you sound like a great guy. Well, thanks for that. It's once again, nice to hear a second nice thing. Well, there you go. Maybe by the end of this, you'll have your whole of nice thing. You're a good sport, brother.
Starting point is 00:10:33 We're going to think of lots of compliments to give to you and about you when we called Mandy and get you your second date update right after this, okay? All right. All right, man. Hold on. Second date update. You're in the middle of a second date update update, and we're going to find out how the couple is doing right after you here, part two. Playing a little aerosmith for our listener, Phil.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Lighters in the air, baby. real ones in honor of the very first concert that he ever went to back in 1989 and I bet he never thought back then that he'd be on a hot date today with a cute girl named Mandy whose first concert was Ariana Grande a little bit of an age difference there which only came to light when their waiter dropped off the bill at their table and said we hope you and your daughter enjoyed your time here. Oh, what a bummer. Kind of an awkward moment. But, hey, Phil
Starting point is 00:11:30 rolled with it. Unfortunately, though, he's not getting a response back from Mandy afterwards. And that's where we come in trying to help Phil. Are we worried she is hitting him up, but it's on TikTok and he doesn't know how to work it? Stop it. He is not that old A. I mean, he's rusty
Starting point is 00:11:47 because he was divorced and this is his I mean, the one thing you may not understand is that there's a lot of, like, ghosting in dating now. Like it's pretty normal. And some people just like to go out for a dinner. Yeah. Yeah, no, that's a good point. Phil, did you know that?
Starting point is 00:12:02 Did I know that? The thing that happened to me happens? Well, it happens all the time. It's not. And you shouldn't take it personally because it's not a reflection of who you are or what you can offer in a relationship. I like it. That was a little spicy.
Starting point is 00:12:18 And Phil, if we can get her, I'm not going to bring up the age thing at all to her unless she says it first. Is that good? Is that cool? with you? Yeah. Well, and it's really good. Because if it's not about the age, and why even bring it out? It shouldn't be because she, again, knows how old you are when you meet on a dating now. Which I keep forgetting. It's not like you bombarded her or surprised her idea. I was completely truthful about it. Okay, good. So I'd love to hear what excuse she has for not calling a great guy like you back. Let's figure it out. I'm going to dial her number right now. Okay, here we go.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Hello? Hey, we're looking to talk with Mandy. Who's this? This is a radio show called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Hey, Mandy. Hi, good morning, Mandy. Hi. Hey.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Is it okay if we chat with you for a bit? I guess I don't have a lot of time, but okay. Okay, well, this shouldn't take long. We're doing something called the second date update, and we're trying to help out one of our listeners that you went out with the other night. and we heard it was actually pretty fun. Fancy seafood date. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Good conversation. A little TikTok action with a guy named Phil. Oh, no, not Phil. Oh, yes, you mean, oh, yes, Phil. Oh, no, K&OW, like I know. Phil's a little bit bummed because you guys haven't arranged a second meetup. And if you don't want to, that's up to you. But it would really help him out if you could give an explanation
Starting point is 00:13:54 for why? Yeah, I mean, remember, this is a guy who's back in the dating world, he's lured in some new things. You have to admit, he's a really nice guy, right? I guess. What do you mean, you guess? Was he?
Starting point is 00:14:08 Was he nice on the date? I mean, I'm into dating older guys, but Bill's picture, it was a lot younger than what he made it out to be. Okay, so he was older than you would normally date. Basically. Okay, so maybe he chose.
Starting point is 00:14:24 An older photo of himself because he liked how he looked, however many years ago, which I think a lot of people do. But, I mean, we spoke to him and, like, his personality seemed very vibrant and young. Really? Yeah. Oh, remember, Brock? Like, photos aside. He's on TikTok now. Yeah, he was chipper.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Like, he sounds cool. Well, here's the weird thing I was showing him on to do the TikTok, and he basically ordered a glass of milk. From who? Oh, my gosh, that's such an old guy. From the waiter? Or a child. Yeah, because we're a kid. Paul died for the battery being too low, and he pulls out a full fanny pack and
Starting point is 00:15:03 large pack from the fanny pack. Oh, he carries a fanny pack around. It was a super pack, not just like a tiny one. It was a super pack in the fanny pack. Anyone need a band-aid or not a fimbled? So he ordered milk and had a man fanny pack. And then on top of all that, the waiter, he made a comment, like a weird comment. That was really embarrassing for him.
Starting point is 00:15:28 If I was waiting on that table, I would think the same thing. Oh, that's not a good response. Well, at least you know, you always have a comb in his back pocket. What? Old guys, we keep a combing in like a tube of grease to do your hair. He's not a grandfather, is he? Well, I don't know, but look. Well, he did start talking about my credit score and my IRA.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Hey, that's important no matter what age you are. Yeah. Probably really good for my future. but you know that's not romantic okay you're right you're like older guys he's just a little too I get you so yeah it's a good that you're sharing this with us because Phil really did need to hear I think some of those things because you know you might not know he is on the other line right now listening to this phone call Mandy oh my gosh not Phil yeah no it's it's a good thing because he really did need to hear some of this stuff yeah he's that he's old like what
Starting point is 00:16:24 Why would anyone want to hear that, Jeff? He's new to online dating. He needs to learn, like, what to do and what not to do as he goes forward in the dating. Or maybe just what age brackets he needs to pick going forward. Don't, Phil. Talk to Mandy. She's on the phone right now. You can have a conversation.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Go ahead. So you're making fun of my fanny pack on the radio? Oh. Bill, it's not about that. It was a big charger. And I feel like I like you. It was a big charger. A lot can fit in that fanny pack.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Oh. Oh, is that a... Do you have it on right? Do you have it on right now? I don't know. Because Brooks getting turned on. Yeah. What you got in your fanny pack, Phil.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Okay. Phil, how did you feel hearing Mandy say all that just a moment ago? I'm not going to lie. It hurt a little bit. Yeah. And some of that sounds a little unfair. Really? Why unfair?
Starting point is 00:17:16 Like what part? Was the glass of milk cold or was it warm? One glass of milk before seafood. It helps with the gut. Okay. I didn't mean. for you to go into it, Phil. I was a no.
Starting point is 00:17:27 It was fired. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, we got it. We got it. We got it. Phil, it just sounds like maybe between you and Mandy, there wasn't so much romantic feelings going on. It was more like a father figure wanting to help a younger person out.
Starting point is 00:17:42 That was the vibe that she was getting. Yeah. So what do you want, Mandy? How do I be more romantic towards you? Oh, how do we shift a little bit here? Just have to think about it differently, Mandy. He's not an older guy. He's just classic.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Oh. He's a... Like the most interesting man in the world. Yeah. Oh, sexy. Egg. Oh, no. No, you gotta look at it in a positive way.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Like, you will never get a 2.m. Hey, you up text from Phil. Until he learns how to do that. Yeah, I'll come at 5.30, but that's fine. You guys are supposed to be helping me. Help me get a date with it. Okay, well, we're trying. So we're just going to ask, Mandy. Phil seems like a really cool, nice guy. And you would not.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Let's admit yourself that you like older men. Yep. Not that old. Well, we still don't know what that number is. That's true. We would like to offer to send you out on another date with Phil that we pay for. Give Phil one more chance. You know what?
Starting point is 00:18:39 As a wing woman, not any romance. No. Okay. All right. And you may need that right now. Listen, if you surround yourself with friends that are young, you look younger. Yeah, dear. Brooke notes from experience.
Starting point is 00:18:51 So there you go. Yeah, she hangs out with us all the time. I swear to God. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. May 24th, 1990, a pipe bomb explodes in the front seat of environmental activist Judy Berry's car. I knew it was a bomb the second that it exploded. I felt it ripped through me with just a force more powerful and terrible than anything that I could describe. In season two of Rip Current, we ask, who tried to kill Judy Barry and why?
Starting point is 00:19:23 She received death threats before the bombing. She received more threats after the bombing. The man and woman who were heard had planned to lead a summer of militant protest against logging practices in Northern California. They were climbing trees and they were sabotaging logging equipment in the woods. The timber industry, I mean, it was the number one industry in the area, but more than it was the culture. It was the way of life. I think that this is a deliberate attempt to sabotage our movement. Episodes of Rip Current Season 2 are available now.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Listen on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, Dr. Lori Santos from the Happiness Lab here. It's the season of giving, which is why my podcast is partnering with Give Directly, a nonprofit that provides people in extreme poverty with the cash they need. This year, we're taking part in the Pods Fight Poverty campaign. And it's not just the Happiness Lab. Some of my favorite podcasters are also taking part. Think Jay Shetty from On Purpose, Dan Harris,
Starting point is 00:20:23 Harris from 10% happier, and Dave Desteno from How God Works and more. Our goal this year is to raise $1 million, which will help over 700 families in Rwanda living in extreme poverty. Here's how it works. You donate to give directly, and they put that cash directly into the hands of families in need, because those families know best what they need, whether it's buying livestock to fertilize their farm, paying school fees, or starting a small business. With that support, families can invest in their future and build lasting change. So join me and your favorite podcasters in the Pods Fight Poverty campaign. Head to give directly.org slash happiness lab to learn more and make a contribution.
Starting point is 00:21:03 And if you're a first time donor, giving multiplier will even match your gift. That's give directly.org slash happiness lab to donate. After the call that we just heard, did anybody expect to hear from Phil and Mandy again? I mean, if they're friends on the phone, I expected it. Oh, she got him a good date. Oh, yeah. Here they are. Both of them are back to give us an update on their life.
Starting point is 00:21:28 Do we call it a love life? I don't know. Like, are you two together now? No. No. Even he said God, no. Not a relationship. All right.
Starting point is 00:21:41 That's a bit clear. We got to the bottom of that. All right. Well, last time we spoke to you, Mandy said she wouldn't date you, Phil, but she would wing woman for you. Did that happen? best wing woman ever best wing woman ever really how so what did she do what'd you do mandy um i definitely introduced him to my aunt sadie you introduced him to your aunt that's aunt she's oh sorry she's rich aunt sadie is very wealthy oh she doesn't like croissant okay dude that's awesome
Starting point is 00:22:14 so wait you hooked phil up with your aunt yeah definitely it was uh i set him up really easily I don't know about a wing woman. Okay. Sounds like a wing woman if you could get a date for a friend. Or you just passed her off to your aunt. How did it go? We don't know the details, guys. Phil, are you in a relationship with her aunt?
Starting point is 00:22:31 Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. Oh, God. Call him uncle. Let me tell you. Oh, my God. Yeah. And Sadie, smoking hot.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Smoking hot. Oh, that's cute. Running the family, huh? Yeah. All right. Is it awkward? like at a family thing when you know that you went on a date with your aunts now
Starting point is 00:22:54 boyfriend? Well as weird as it seems they're actually really cute together. Oh, that's nice. Actually, they came over for Thanksgiving this year and it was really fun. Oh, wow. That's a big thing. I bet he had his fanny pack, Phil a pepto-bizmo, ready to go. Yeah. Phil, you
Starting point is 00:23:10 dog. Got to stay prepared. Okay. That's such a cute story. Yeah. Not the happy ending I saw coming, but it's much better than what I was envisioned. So, congratulations. There were some happy ending. Well, okay.
Starting point is 00:23:26 All right. He used that on Thanksgiving. Yeah. There's got to be one. He definitely checks out. Definitely keep us updated on what happens between Phil and your aunt Sadie. Yeah. Yeah, that's really cool.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Do we need more updates? I don't think you know. I don't think we do. Maybe just send it in like a text message to 75.9.2. I know he has a reputation, but it's going to catch up to him. Gabe Ortiz is a cop. His brother Larry,

Starting point is 00:24:19 parents not to drive while using their typewriters. Why should it be any different for us kids and our cell phones? Distracted driving was the cause of more than 3,000 deaths in 2022. Come on, we're smarter than this. Let's put down the phones and focus on the roads. Drive safe, everybody. Don't drive distracted. A message brought to you by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,

We were in the car, like a Rolling Stone came on, and he said, there's a line in there about your mother. And I said, what? What I would do if I didn't feel like I was being accepted is choose an identity that other people can't have. I knew something had happened to me in the middle of the night,
Starting point is 00:25:39 but I couldn't hold on to what had happened. These are just a few of the moving and important stories on my... 13th season of Family Secrets.
