Listen to Family Secrets Season 12 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Dr. Joy Hardin-Bradford, host of the Therapy for Black Girls podcast. What is not a norm is to allow it to prevent you from doing the things that you want to do,
Starting point is 00:01:51 the things that you were meant to do. Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Everyone thinks they'd never join a cult. But it happens all the time to people just like you. And people just like us. I'm Lola Blanc. And I'm Megan Elizabeth.
Starting point is 00:02:09 We're the host of Trust Me, a podcast about cults, manipulation, and the psychology of belief. Each week we talk to fellow survivors, former believers, and experts to understand why people get pulled in and how they get out. Trust me.
Starting point is 00:02:22 New episodes every Wednesday on Exactly Right. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Oh, man, do we have a treat for you? It's the second date podcast. And today, thank you for being here, by the way. It's Burke and Jeffrey in the morning. Today we get an update from one of the most well-known, one of the most infamous couples that we've had on the show.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Yeah, because when it involves dogs in a date, there's just more feelings. Dude. You got cute puppies involved. I don't think there was one person that liked this guy. I mean, what were the comments originally when we did this second day, Alexis? If there is one, it's hard to find. through the coal is definitely a bonehead.
Starting point is 00:03:00 He's not a dog lover. He's a dog exploiter. Oh, man. WTF is wrong with that guy. Oh, my God. He's a piece of work. I have no words. Dude.
Starting point is 00:03:09 And here's the thing. Here's the thing. We got an email from both of them that they wanted to come back on the show together. Which is shocking. Don't let her read the comments. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:03:22 We're going to have them on. But listen, we're going to play the original second date so you can be up to speed. So we're going to play the original. part where they were on and then we're going to get them back on in part three so don't go anywhere and there was going to be a little ad in between so stick around yeah stick around there it is part one starts right now most of the time when we do second date updates yeah we feature humans trying to find love with other humans yeah that's what we focus kind of hard to talk to
Starting point is 00:03:50 non-humans yeah yeah generally our policy has been to focus strictly on human interaction Jeff, that's literally not a policy. Are we going to get the first doggy second date? This was possibly a first because the star of today's phone call was actually a puppy looking for a forever home. And it led to one of the more memorable second date showdowns we had all year between two fellow dog lovers. You're going to hear it when they both come back on to share what's happened since in a brand new second date update update. right after this second date update
Starting point is 00:04:28 I was watching a clip on Tooby the other day Was this music playing while you're doing it? Dude my dad loves Toobie Does he? It's great It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning We're not on Tooby by the way
Starting point is 00:04:40 But you can find us on other more reputable platforms But the clip was a single lady An attractive single lady Mind you talking about dating in the modern world And how it's so rare now That guys actually plan anything thing for their dates. Oh.
Starting point is 00:04:56 This is on your to be. Yeah. I don't know what. Just hot women complaining on two. The algorithm's doing what it wants to do. One of my dad watches it all the time. She was really upset because a guy wanted to go on a walk and get to know her. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Why are you telling us this? Ew. Ew. Am I right, Alexis? I mean, what's the way? A walk. And she's a runner actually. Alexis is like, at least jobs.
Starting point is 00:05:18 I mean, plan something. Pay for something. Put in some actual effort. Oh, if we could walk through the mall. That's better. Is that something? You need to watch less tuby, Jeff. I'm just saying that's why I'm proud to talk to our caller today
Starting point is 00:05:31 because he actually planned something for his date. He would be celebrated on the platform. He absolutely would. His name is Cole. Cole, it is an honor and a privilege to have you join us today. How you doing, man? Well, thanks. It's an honor and a privilege to be here again.
Starting point is 00:05:47 God, what a set up. I feel like you're just going to tell us that you took her to dinner. Yeah. Which is fine. That's great. Oh, you bought her a Tooby subscription, too. Good man. The premium version to get the good content like I get.
Starting point is 00:06:01 So, cool. Tell us about this girl that you met. What's her name? Well, her name is Jamie. Okay. How'd you guys meet? We met through one of the dating apps. I really went out of my way to make this a special experience for her.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Can I ask before we find out what you did? Why? Like, why were you so motivated to do something special for Jamie? Well, we were talking before we met. And she had mentioned she hadn't been very social in the last six months because her dog had run away. And she's taking their 80 cards. Oh. That's so sad.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Oh, no. Yeah, she was really devastated. So I told her that we're going to go to a restaurant. But instead, when I picked her up, I actually took her to a pet shelter. Oh. Oh. A pet shelter. A risky move.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Interesting. It could be really good or really bad. You didn't tell her at all? No, because I figured just being around dogs would help cheer up. Happened at the time of the animals and we'd be able to get to know each other. Absolutely. Yeah. Or she could be totally re-traumatized, seeing dogs with no families again.
Starting point is 00:07:03 I mean, I was worried at first because she was a little hesitant. I think she was a little weirded out. But then she really seemed to warm up to the whole thing. And then I really felt like she bonded with a few of the dogs there. Oh. That's really good. So you got to play with the dogs? I mean, you weren't like going to adopt one, right?
Starting point is 00:07:22 You were just going to see them. Well, I wasn't planning on it. and I thought neither was she, but she told me she thought she might come back and adopt one. Oh, wow. It's so hard not to when you see them. I know. That's why I never go to pet shelters. I know I'll get one. I will go home with one. But you're kind of like the hero
Starting point is 00:07:39 in that sense and that you've reopened her mind to the idea of owning another pet. Well, that's what I thought. So we left the shelter. We went out together. Yeah. We had great conversation. Of course, we talked a lot about dogs because we both love dogs. And I could feel the vibe. Oh. Did you try to kiss her? I did lean in.
Starting point is 00:07:59 We did have a little peck. Oh, that's cute. Not a dog kiss. I was going to say with the double-faced. Nettie humped table chair leg. Okay. Well, that's sweet. So I'm just surprised I have not heard from her and we're not already hanging out, you know, more.
Starting point is 00:08:17 No kidding. Because if she went back and actually adopted the dog, it'd be such an easy way to be like, oh, you have to come walk the dog with me. You have to come meet the dog. How's so-and-so doing, you know? So what's the deal? Is she, like, ghosting you completely? Totally ghost.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Totally ghost. Okay. And how many times have you texted her or called? I don't want to be obsessive about it, but I'd say about three or four. Oh. See, that's a cat. Nothing crazy happened at all. Like, we've heard so many awful stories.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I don't see anything crazy that stands out here. I mean, not to sound like I'm patting myself on the back here, but I was awesome. Oh. You felt like you were on, you mean? That's when they're... I know. It's called confidence. Was he too confident, though?
Starting point is 00:09:00 I think it's really sweet. I don't know what's going on here. Maybe it's something simple. You know, maybe she lost her phone. Could it be that taking a woman to a pet shelter is more romantic than buying a woman a bunch of free drinks? Oh. Why can you do both? You don't get to have it all, Alexis.
Starting point is 00:09:17 We're hopefully going to find out an answer from Jamie and see if she picks up when we call her and try and get you your second date update. right after this. I really appreciate it. Yeah, man. Just hold on. Second date update. You're in the middle of a second date update update update, and we're going to find out how the couple is doing right after you hear, part two.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Two daters bonded over their shared love of animals. It's so sweet, Jeff. And where do they end up at a pet shelter? Yeah. Yeah, that's probably what happens. Petting dogs, getting their faces licked, hopefully not getting their rear sniffed. You got to save that for date number three.
Starting point is 00:09:52 That's a good point. And now where does our listener, Cole, stand? Well, he feels like he's in his own cage shelter right now, all alone, crying because his date, Jamie, isn't coming to pick him up. He's a whimpering stray in the back of a dirty shelter. That's how he feels. That's how it feels to get ghosted like this. Well, guess what, Cole? We're going to be throwing you a bone today, buddy.
Starting point is 00:10:15 We're going to help you out. We are going to call Jamie. Hopefully she picks up, and we're going to try and find out. what happened. I'm just praying that she's been so busy rolling around on the floor, play and fetch with her brand new adopted puppy, that she just hasn't had the time to pick up
Starting point is 00:10:33 her phone and respond. Honestly, getting a new puppy is like getting a baby. In a lot of ways. You're up all night. You've got to deal with pee and all other sorts of things. Yeah, write that on the mom blogs. They're going to love that. So, cool, is that a possibility? Do you think maybe there's a chance that she just has a new pet
Starting point is 00:10:49 and that's taken up all of her attention? I mean, I'm really trying not to make doggy style joke here I'll remind you Cole this is a family show we have a lot of kids that listen to me I was thinking it too Cole you're good I'm glad we have the same thing I'm really not helping us here so let's just
Starting point is 00:11:04 you're close to losing your bone Cole yeah oh wow it looks like Alex on the same way we're really going into better territory with this yeah we got it before any more horrible things are said let's just call Jamie
Starting point is 00:11:20 you want it on this girl I'm going to pass everybody down okay here we go dialing it right now hello hello hey is this Jamie yes it is who's this hey Jamie thanks for picking up
Starting point is 00:11:41 we're a radio show we're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning um okay what is this it's a surprise that's for sure it is it's a fun surprise it's a segment that we do called the second date update.
Starting point is 00:11:54 So why are you calling me? We are calling because one of our listeners has asked us to reach out to you. Who called you? Well, it's a guy that you went out with recently and you have kind of ghosted him. At least that's what he thinks. His name's Cole.
Starting point is 00:12:11 Are you kidding me? That piece of crap called you? Whoa. We got to that quick. Wait, are we talking about the same person, the guy that took you to the dog shelter? Yeah. Oh, really? He told you that?
Starting point is 00:12:23 Yeah. Is that wrong? Is that not right? Did you not go to a pet shelter? No, we did. And I can tell you exactly why I'm not calling him back. Well, that makes our job so easy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Honestly, Cole is very confused from his perspective. The date went really well, and you guys had a lot of fun. We did, and I felt a huge connection with one of the dogs that we met. Great. I went back to the shelter the next day to adopt him, and I even named him Muffin already in my head. Oh, solid name. What happened? So the shelter worker that I saw there who was the same person we saw the day before, he told me, the guy I was with, had come in and adopted the dog.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Wait, he adopted it. Cole came in? Yes. I asked him if he was joking. What the heck? And he said, but he'd come in like an hour before me. You're kidding. I mean, this has got to be some sort of mix-up.
Starting point is 00:13:21 I know. I was shocked and honestly, I thought maybe he was going to text me and say that he had a surprise for me. Totally. Yeah. But then he just texted me wanting to go back out again. Okay. But he said that he called you and he texted you. He wanted to get a hold of you.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Maybe that's still the case. And maybe that's the whole reason that we're doing this call is to give you a huge surprise. Because I need to let you know, Jamie, that Cole is on the other line. right now, wanting to tell you something maybe? Cole? Hey, Jamie, I didn't know you knew about that. Why didn't you just text me about it? You just ghosted me.
Starting point is 00:14:00 That's terrible communication. What? Are you joking me? Do you have the dog? Do you have muffin? Yeah, I have muffin. And I feel like we've really bonded. Oh.
Starting point is 00:14:11 But wait. Wait. Huh? You're holding her for Jamie, right? to give as like a gift? No, I'm so shocked that she's even upset about this because I knew she had a connection
Starting point is 00:14:20 with one of the dogs but I thought she had a connection with that little uglier one. Oh, no. Although the ugly ones are pretty cute. You plan a date for a woman who's grieving her lost dog and then you steal the new dog from her?
Starting point is 00:14:33 He didn't know though. Are you kidding me? You stole my dog. Like, I didn't feel your dog. I thought you wanted that little ugly thing. Oh, okay. There's no such a good dog. Well, yeah, there is, but they're still cute.
Starting point is 00:14:45 That's exactly. Why are you insulting her? Why do you not feel bad, Cole? It was an ugly dog. You guys didn't see it. Okay, but you... It's like the Deadpool dog. You took muffin!
Starting point is 00:14:57 We're too invested in this with little dogs being involved. We all have to step away and let Jamie and Cole talk to each other. Cole, say something to Jamie because she feels like you knew that you liked that dog and you came in and swooped it out from under her. I did not. I had no idea that she felt that way about it, but I, I, I felt that way about it. but I feel like I have a way we can all be happy. Already?
Starting point is 00:15:19 Okay. I told you at dinner that muffin really touched on my heart. There's a deal that can be made. I feel like I'm being very magnanimous here. How about if you want to buy them off me, I'll give him to you for $300. No way. Well, okay. The adoption fee was only $75.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Get out of here. So you're so attached at $300. is your price? You guys can judge all you want, but he's my dog now. He's not in the shelter anymore, and we've really developed a bond, and I'm sorry, but it's going to cost money to break that. I will say now that he's not a shelter pet, I see where he's coming from. They are more expensive when they're not directly from the shelter.
Starting point is 00:15:59 So that is a good point. He's domesticated. You've had this dog for less than 48 hours, and now you're trying to make money off of the dog. And honestly, it's just making it so much worth. I genuinely cannot believe you're doing this. Listen, I don't want any hard feelings between. So how about you pay me, and I'll give you some of those plastic bones that I already got for him. Wow.
Starting point is 00:16:22 For the same $300 deal as before? Oh, yeah, for sure. Okay. But throw in her a bone. Yeah. But actual plastic bones. I genuinely just cannot believe that you would be doing this to me. This is, I don't even know what to say to you.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I don't understand why you're so upset. You come out ahead in this deal. Because for $300, you get the dogs, you get plastic bones. and you still get me. Oh, you're on the job. Wow, he's putting that out there, too? Can we train Muffin to bite you? I could totally sense the tension between you guys that you were talking about.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Honestly, with the whole dog dispute, I totally forgot about your guys' blossoming love connection, which is the whole reason that we're calling. We'd like to offer to send you guys out on another date that we would pay for. We can put Muffin in the middle of you, too, and then Muffin can choose, like, on those viral videos. Muffin's a little bit of a sore subject. Let's just stick to the romance for now. I'm sorry, you guys, but I'm going to hang up, and Cole, you can text me when you're ready to gift muffin to me because you know that that's my dog. So, wait, if he gives you the dog, does he get a date?
Starting point is 00:17:27 Hey, that ugly little one is still there. Wait, she's even there? She's gone. Yeah, she hung up, Cole. Dude, Cole, that's low, man. Why would you do that? I didn't know it was the same dog that she loved. He's added at dinner.
Starting point is 00:17:41 But you found out, and then you tried to charge her stuff. 300 dollars. Look, I was being thoughtful. I could have charged her a lot more. I mean, guess what? I found out it was a purebred. Oh. Those were thousands, actually. Yeah. So, oh man, you guys, you guys done this a lot.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Even though she hung up, do you think she'd still want to go out? Yeah, I think, yeah. Shoot your shot, man. She's playing hard to get right now. I always hang up on guys I like. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. What's up, guys? Welcome to Arush to Papa. The goal.

Honestly, I can't say that I expected to ever hear an update from these two. No, none of us did. No, Cole and Jamie, though, are back today for an update, update.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Trust it, I'm surprised, too. But first, Cole and Jamie, welcome back to the show. Hey, guys. You both sound somewhat happy. Yeah, what's going on? What's happened in your lives since we last spoke to you? Yeah, like, how do you have an update? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Well, the social media response was not great. Well, yeah, you tried to sell Jamie the dog back. Yeah. But the weird thing was it sort of made me double down and go, well, you know what? I think this makes me want to take care of muffin even more. Yeah. So I did. it improved your emotional maturity.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Okay. Was that good or bad? I think it ended up good, actually, except for the fact that one day Muffin did end up running away. Oh, Muffin, come home. How was that good? Well, I didn't know what else to do,
Starting point is 00:20:57 so I decided to call Jamie. Oh. Oh, wow. You really didn't know what else to do. Honestly, I almost didn't even answer the phone when I saw that it was him, obviously. But he told me what happened, and of course, I just like,
Starting point is 00:21:11 like jump in my car and go meet him to look around the neighborhood for Muffin. Oh, I thought you were going to say to steal my dog back. Yeah. Well, if we could find Muffin, I mean, oh, my gosh, my heart just, like, fully sank. Yeah. But the weird part about it is that the whole search ended up being kind of a good experience for us. What? We had the chance to talk stuff out and we bonded a little bit.
Starting point is 00:21:34 And I could tell that Cole wasn't as bad a guy as I baby thought he was at first. Wow. Really? So wait, are you dating? Well, the most important part is that we did find Muffin. Oh, yeah, Brooke. Let's focus. Who cares about their relationship?
Starting point is 00:21:50 We're worried about the dog. Oh, my gosh. Muffin was like half a mile away at a dog cafe, just getting treats and pets from everyone. Oh. So where are you two at? Yeah. Well, see, what happened was we saw Muffin, and we started walking up, and they ran right to Jamie. Oh, Muffin ran to Jamie.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Oh, he chose. Yes. Okay. And that's when I kind of went, you know what? Muffin belongs with Jamie. Oh. Wow, dude. Jamie, you have two new dogs.
Starting point is 00:22:19 And is that when you Venmoed him, Jamie? No. No, Cole. No, I didn't ask for any money. Yeah. Oh, that's good. Really? I do have muffin now, but Cole is allowed to visit.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Oh, okay. Oh, okay. Now Brooke agrees to stop cyberbullying you for now, Cole. Appreciate that, sir. They drop those of DM still. Okay. Just occasionally. I'm kidding.
Starting point is 00:22:43 I'm kidding. I'm never cyberbullying. I'm glad that you two work it out and were able to track down muffin after he was lost. At least that's a happy end. Yeah, that's the most important thing. Well, keep us updated on what happens in your life. Thanks for reaching out, okay? Thank you.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Absolutely. Yeah. It's broken Jeffrey in the morning. Welcome to Pretty Private with Ebeney, the podcast where silence is broken and stories are set free.
