So what happened at Chappaquiddick?
Well, it really depends on who you talk to.
There are many versions of what happened in 1969 when a young Ted Kennedy drove a car into a pond.
And left a woman behind to drown.
Chappaquiddick is a story of a tragic death and how the Kennedy machine took control.
Every week we go behind the headlines and beyond the drama of America's royal family. Listen to United States of Kennedy's

I'm Bob Crawford, host of American History Hotline,

You, the listener, ask the questions.
Did George Washington really cut down a cherry tree?
Were JFK and Marilyn Monroe having an affair? And I find the questions. Did George Washington really cut down a cherry tree? Were JFK and Marilyn Monroe having an affair?
And I find the answers.
I'm so glad you asked me this question.

My truck was blown up by a 20-pound anti-tank mine. My parachute did not deploy.
I was kidnapped by a drug cartel.
When we step beyond the edge of what we know. I clinically died.
The heart stopped beating.
Which I was dead for 11.5 minutes.
In return.
It's a miracle I was brought back.

I don't know what the best part of this segment is today.
It's either the intro that Jeff sings or the funny stories people give us.
I know.
Yeah, it's your second day podcast.
But today we are going to give you a textual healing.
I've already seen just a little song in my head.
Yeah, I know.
I know.
It's really good.
It's going to get stuck in your head.
I promise.
But that's where when someone has maybe a text issue that they don't know how to solve we jump in
To the rescue and help them send the perfect text. So perfect in you know, yeah roughly perfect. Yeah, I use their quotes. Yeah
But we always like to start with your comments. Yes, and I saw one from Jasmine who said I need more
I love to hear you guys you all together are the best
You all can't leave the program because I want to hear you when, you all together are the best. You all can't leave the program
because I wanna hear you when I'm in my 80s
with a hearing aid.
Oh God.
Oh man.
I'll just be 120 years old,
and it will be fine,
when we do it all the same things.
Imagine all of us out here with hearing aids,
what a disaster.
Oh wow.
Jeff's gonna need one in like two years.
Immediately.
How loud he listens to his headphones.
I don't care how old he gets, by the way.
He will always be young Jeff. Yeah.
I'll be 100 up here. Good point.
And by the way, if you really love this podcast
and you do actually want more, you're not just saying.
I'm not going to say what's wrong with you.
I'm going to say we do a full hour podcast as well.
If you're on Spotify, you can hit the more like this button
or if you're on YouTube or another channel,
you can just find Brooke and Jeffrey on the main feed.
And then you get an hour of us every day.
You get more.
Yeah.
So if you don't want that, avoid it at all costs.
Let's get this textual healing started.
So we got a message from a listener just a few minutes ago
that we ranked a code 9 emergency.
Whoa. Wait, what are the codes? I never learned the code. I don't know, but 9 feels high. Is it out of 9?
It's almost as dire as the code 69. I responded to yesterday under the bridge to Brooks House.
Okay. Wow. Now that it's open, you're busy.
Well, now we know the real reason it broke in the first place.
One of our listeners says that she's in a weird,
complicated situation that's turned her life
completely upside down.
And she's panicked and felt like she had no other options,
which is why just minutes ago,
she stole her roommate's cell phone.
And it's now sitting in her car outside their apartment
waiting for us to help her.
That's upside down in a bad way, not like in your way. We're gonna find out what would make her need to steal her friend That's upside down in a bad way not like in your way.
Yeah, we're gonna find out what would make her need to steal her friend's phone when we do a textual healing coming up next.
Textual healing textual.
So we got an urgent DM this morning at Brooke and Jeffrey
saying this is a textual emergency.
Something about a woman who's locked herself
in her own car with her roommate's cell phone.
Wait, what?
I don't know anything other than that,
so let's bring her on.
Can you breathe?
Terry, welcome to the show.
Hi, hi.
Sorry, I'm just freaking out.
You're freaking out?
Why?
What's going on?
Yeah, I don't know.
I've just been upset the last three times that I've come home to meet my boyfriend at
my place.
He's been there before me.
Okay.
I come in the door, right?
And my boyfriend's standing there looking kind of guilty and awkward.
And I don't know, my roommate's roommates there too and she's acting weird.
Okay, slow down. How long have you been like who's your boyfriend? I guess is the first question.
Is he a famous boyfriend that we would know?
I just mean if we're gonna be talking about him, we need to know what his name is.
Sure, well does your boyfriend have a name?
Yeah, his name's Alex.
Okay, and so Alex is getting home to your apartment before you and that's unusual behavior?
So Alex is getting home to your apartment before you and that's unusual behavior? It's just the way that he's there and she's there and they're acting really weird and guilty.
Oh. So you're suspecting something.
You chose to lock yourself in the car to go through the phone.
How long have you been...
Alexis assumed you did it by accident.
He's done that many times.
Oh, did you guys not think that?
I'm trapped inside of my own car and I don't know how to unlock the door.
I mean, I have the keys. What do I do next? Wait, wait, you guys not think that? I'm trapped inside of my own car and I don't know how to unlock the door. I mean, I have the keys, what do I do next?
Wait, I caught it.
Wait, you guys.
So, okay, so you're suspicious of your boyfriend and your roommate that something's going on between them?
Yeah, I mean, like, it makes me feel like they're hooking up and look, I didn't want to believe it, but then, you know, I started thinking more about it and...
Okay.
So wait, how long have you been dating him?
We've been dating for three years.
Oh, that's a long time.
Wow.
So have you confronted either one of them about what you think might be going on?
Have you brought it up to your roommate or to your boyfriend?
You did?
Oh, you did.
Oh, that was the first thing I did.
I asked my boyfriend about it and of course he denies it. But he started laughing like really nervously and he said it was ridiculous
of me to think that and that I'm the only one for him.
You know, yada yada yada yada.
Is there something that's like, why don't you believe that?
I just have this weird feeling that he's lying.
OK, yeah. I mean, guys are not very good at lying.
I will say that we're like, oh, what? What? What roommate?
You roommate? I're a roommate?
I've never even seen another one since I met you.
You have friends.
I feel like you know when you walk in on someone too.
They all like scatter really fast.
Are any of them half naked when you walk in?
I don't know, I've just been going crazy
and I wanna know if it really happened
or am I being obsessive for no reason.
Okay, take a deep breath.
I mean, one thing, you've been dating this guy for three years.
I mean, I assume he and your roommate are pretty good friends, right? They're close.
I guess, for me.
Okay. So you wanted us to do a textual healing to help you with this. What do you want to do here?
Look, I figured that this is the only way to know for sure if something happened.
This happened like five minutes ago.
My roommate was on her phone,
put it down to go to the kitchen and while it was locked
and I just grabbed it and ran out to my car.
So-
Wait.
You stole your roommate's phone?
Have you read anything yet?
No, I've been a little freaked out.
Listen, my idea is that I'm gonna text my boyfriend
from her phone, pretending to be her.
Oh, smart.
Oh, I love it.
Oh, my God, this is.
Conniving, but very smart.
I don't know, I mean, Alexis is onto something.
Do they already have a thread going?
Do they have a text thread without you?
The last few texts seemed a little weird and off again.
It's just everything's making me think
that there's something going on.
What does it say?
They could be deleting the bad texts.
It says I'm coming over and that was him sending it to her.
Like why would he send that?
Oh.
Oh.
That's not a good sign.
Does she respond to that?
Like hard eyes?
She just sends a thumbs up.
Oh, that's worse than hard eyes.
Yeah, it is.
It means she's an old woman.
She's getting the thumbs.
Maybe they have a routine down though.
Yeah, it's like less communication, only emoji. It thumbs. Maybe they have a routine down though. Yeah, it's less communication, only yamosies.
It is a lot to jump to the conclusion though,
just based on the text.
I don't know.
But they're acting weird too.
The physical actions is what makes it weird.
I would think it's weird not to jump to that conclusion.
Yeah.
No, I'm getting that weird feeling,
like I just walked into a room of people
with half of their clothes on.
See, I'm getting really excited.
Is that bad? That's typical. I love drama. I was just saying. Feeling like I just walked into a room of people with half of their clothes on
Terry you want our help to come up with a text from your roommate to your boyfriend
Yeah, and I need you guys to go quick because I think she's gonna realize that she's never fallen And I don't know how long we have okay, Brooke
You have an idea what do you say as the guilty roommate?
I would say, I think she knows.
Do you see what I'm saying?
Cause you're coming from the roommate.
I think she knows.
I'm freaking out right now.
Sure, sure.
I like it.
And just see what his response is.
Because if it's innocent, he'll be like, knows what, right?
Like he'll just write back and be like,
I don't know what you're talking about.
If he's not innocent, he'll write back. He's gonna be like, oh what, right? Like he'll just write back and be like, I don't know what you're talking about.
If he's not innocent, he'll write back.
Oh crap.
Yes, yes.
Or he'll just send a thumbs down emoji.
That's the code.
Yeah, just all thumbs and fingers?
Yes.
Okay.
The A-okay emoji.
Maybe put the wide-eyed shocked emoji at the end.
Like, I think she knows I'm freaking out.
Yeah, yeah, no, that sounds good.
I'll type that out.
Okay, go ahead.
Oh my God. Dude, this sucks. Cause if he he's cheating it's with your roommate and your friends with her
Yeah, and if he's not now you're like that overly protective girlfriend that like worries about every time that he's alone with somebody
Okay, we have to play a song first, but when we come back.
They get a fast song, we don't have a lot of time.
We're gonna speed up the song,
and then we'll see if your boyfriend responded,
and if he really did cheat on you with your roommate
when we continue textual revealing.
I hope it's not true, we'll find out right after this.
We have a young woman named Terry on the phone with us,
who reached out while she's locked inside her car.
Now, don't worry, she wants to be locked in it
because she's hiding.
Yeah, Alexis was scared about that.
She's hiding from her roommate outside of their apartment
with her roommate's phone.
Because she believes that there's a chance
her boyfriend could be cheating with her roommate.
Oh, I don't like this. And I don't like that her roommate and her boyfriend already had a text thread growing on their own.
Yeah, and the threads was basically like telling her when I'm coming over.
Yeah, that's even worse!
Which is not something that you usually text to your girlfriend's roommate.
Right!
No, ever.
So now Terry wants our help to text her man on her roommate's phone pretending to be her to see if he's gonna admit to doing anything
Oh my god, didn't he write back?
Well, before we get there we should mention Terry didn't ask to be on textual healing this morning
But she did just email us for help in a panic. It just kind of worked out that this segment fit right into place
Hey, that's perfect!
Let's get to the text messages, Jeffrey!
I don't care about the logistics of our ear.
Oh, sorry.
You don't care about the listeners understanding what's going on.
No, wait.
You just care about the drama.
Does that mean somebody else thought they were doing textual healing today and we kind
of kicked them to the curb?
This was more important.
Okay.
Sorry for the other person who thought they were doing to be on the show.
The first thing that we texted to Terry's boyfriend from her roommate's phone was, oh
my god, I'm freaking out, I think Terry knows.
Wide-eye emoji.
And Terry, did your boyfriend respond to that?
Yeah, he responded and said, what are you talking about?
Yes!
Oh!
Yes, that's so good!
No, that's bad.
That means they've practiced this so many times.
He knows exactly what to say when he's getting caught.
He doesn't think he's getting caught.
He thinks he's talking to the roommate.
No, the roommate is saying we're caught
and he's going, oh.
You could take that sentence either way.
Like he could just be playing into it
or he could actually be panicked.
Like, what are you talking about?
Oh, like I'm going to be in jail.
It depends on how you say it.
That's a good point, actually.
This is what you do.
I'll get it aside.
Back to him, you say, what do you mean?
What am I talking about?
And then he's gonna be like, what do you mean? What am I talking about?
Yeah, just do that back and forth for like I feel like it has to be something better than that I just I don't know fine. I tried
Confirmed that they have met up and he's said I'm coming over so you can say about us meeting behind her back
You know that's specific, but that not, but what we need to get into
is the questions because we need to hear from him.
We need him to admit that he is cheating.
And if we keep making statements
that never opens the door for him.
That's a good idea.
Maybe we should pressure him to admit something
by saying, I'm going to tell her today.
And that forces him to respond.
I think that's good.
I think that's good. I think that's good.
Like unless you text me back in great detail,
what we've been doing to tell him.
I mean, yes, but maybe more vague than that.
Maybe it's just like, I'm sorry, the pressure is getting to me.
I just want to tell her what happened.
Wow. That's actually really good, Jeff.
But what is he going to say back again?
If he's truly innocent,
then he still maybe won't know
what we're talking about.
If he keeps asking questions,
we'll figure it out that he's innocent.
It's hard, like I'm gonna tell her
if you don't type a line.
Yeah, yeah.
No, I think I like the pressure is getting to me.
I'm gonna tell her what happened.
Yeah, that's really good.
I agree with Jeff.
Okay.
Terry, go ahead and send that.
Okay, I'm sending it.
Oh my God.
Oh.
Again, if he writes back, like, what are you talking about?
Then we believe him or then we say,
you know what I'm talking about, what should I say?
Like what those guys say?
Yeah, I don't want to play on the theoretical conversation
that might happen every which way.
Oh, wait, what?
He responded quickly.
What did he say?
What did he write back?
He said, what happened?
Oh.
Just say, you know know you know what happened?
It's an all-caps all caps man. It's right in the middle still could be like what happened or what happened? Yeah?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, how do we get good at that? Like what are you talking about? Yeah?
It could be like what happened to us. Why are we falling apart as this secret love affair? That's happening behind
That is really I think I like just
What happened no, I mean like in the universe This secret love affair that's happening behind Maybe he's not cheating we should say look she knows we've been meeting up behind her back
I like that and let it hang we
Jose you're on
Like playing off of the emotions that his girlfriend is going through.
You have to bring that up so that he feels the need to say something.
We know his girlfriend already accused him because his girlfriend's on the phone with us and just told us that.
So he knows that you're upset.
I think I should say, I feel really guilty about it and Terry's been upset.
Okay.
And I think you go with what Jose said, like she knows that we've been meeting behind her back
We've been meeting without her there. Okay, go with that Terry. Okay. All right. I sent it. Okay. Okay. How are you feeling right now?
Really anxious. Yeah
I feel like right now I feel less confident than I did before we started texting him that this guy was cheating on you.
I don't know, I feel nauseous.
Yeah, I don't know if he's smart enough to play this dumb.
I feel nauseous because we've done hundreds of these and this is the first time the listener is actually choosing to take Jose's advice.
Yeah!
It was some sort of Twilight Zone thing.
It was pretty good advice.
It actually was.
It means she's probably gonna end up single.
It's okay, I'm trying my best here.
Terry, has he written anything back?
Uh, hold on, he's typing.
Oh my god.
Alright, alright, he said, he said, look, I've taken care of it, she won't know.
What does that mean?
Say that, say what do you mean?
Or just ask how, how are you gonna take care of it?
That means he needs to explain.
I like it
Yeah, right tell me exactly how you did it. Yeah, I like the exact
When you don't smoke weed because I feel clarity
You take some form of that like what did you say Jose?
No, tell me exactly tell me exactly how you did it.
Perfect. Cause you want your stories
to match up. As lying
roommate and boyfriend.
What did they take care of? I don't know.
Something is up. Yeah, obviously they didn't take
very good care of it because you're on the phone
with us thinking that he's cheating.
So we took terrible care of it.
He's typing. Do, we got dots.
Should we do the dot song?
No! Dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots, dots The dogs were- I have no idea. I found a guy who fixes old cameras and I paid him 150 bucks.
He says he'll be done by Tuesday.
I'll put it back on the shelf and she'll never know.
What?
Old cameras?
Did they film like a racy video together?
Wait, do you know what he's talking about?
I think he's talking about, I have an old digital film camera.
He could be talking about my camera.
Are they making pictures on it or something?
Is your camera in the bedroom or is it in like the living room?
It should be in the living room.
No, you know what?
Now that I think about it,
my camera hasn't been on the shelf
because I was looking for it the other day,
but I was in a rush to go somewhere.
So I just sort of left it.
And I'm wondering if they just broke the camera
and were too scared to tell me.
Okay.
Maybe we just asked that, like paint out the picture so
the camera is gonna be fixed and she'll never know we broke it. But he already
said that. Well we're just repeating what he said. Well then why are we? We need to
know like and she didn't know we broke it while taking those racy photos. You want to
know what the pictures on the camera are? Well I mean are we still doubting or now
do we believe he's not cheating? I'm wondering Terry. How do you feel about it?
I don't know guys. I just my feelings kind of changing about this like I'm feeling like maybe they just broke it and they're feeling bad
You know them better than we do so if your natural gut instinct is that then that's probably the truth
Yeah, we're like assuming the worst now
Maybe when you do get your camera back, I don't want you to see anything that you don't
want to see on there, so you just mail the film over to our radio station.
Yeah, good idea.
And then we'll look at it for you and rate the pictures and then tell you if anything
bad is on there that you don't want to see.
Jeff will spend a lot of time in the dark room.
Yeah, you guys are the best.
I got to go get my roommate's phone back
before she realizes.
Okay. Yeah, before you look like-
Delete all the text that we just sent
and that he sent too.
Okay, yeah, no, I will.
Oh, cause she's, the friend's gonna see it.
Yeah. Oh my god.
Oh, now we've created a stream.
I mean, this is only gonna be more drama.
You better update us.
Yeah.
Somebody's getting caught doing something wrong.
I don't know why. Next week,
her roommate's gonna email like, I think my roommate's been stealing my phone.
I want a text from her phone.
It's Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning.
So what happened at Chappaquiddick?
Well, it really depends on who you talk to.
There are many versions of what happened in 1969 when a young Ted Kennedy drove a car
into a pond.
And left a woman behind to drown.
There's a famous headline, I think, in the New York Daily News.
It's, Teddy escapes, blonde drowns.
And in a strange way, right, that sort of tells you.
The story really became about Ted's political future,
Ted's political hopes. Will Ted become president?
Chappaquiddick is a story of a tragic death
and how the Kennedy machine took control.
And he's not the only Kennedy to survive a scandal.
The Kennedys have lived through disgrace,
affairs, violence, you name it.
So is there a curse?
Every week we go behind the headlines
and beyond the drama of America's royal family.

American history is full of wise people.
Well, women said something like, you know, 99.99% of war is diarrhea and 1% is glory.
Those founding fathers were gossipy AF, and they loved to cut each other down.
I'm Bob Crawford, host of American History Hotline, the show where you send us your questions
about American history and I find the answers, including the nuggets of wisdom our history
has to offer.
Hamilton pauses and then he says, the greatest man that ever lived was Julius Caesar and Jefferson writes in his diary
This proves that Hamilton is for a dictator based on corruption
My favorite line was what Neil Armstrong said it would have been harder to fake it than to do it

So that call happened just a couple days ago. Yes.
Obviously, it was a little bit unclear what was going on with the camera.
I feel like there was a huge possibility of him cheating.
Well, a little while later, we did get an update from Terry.
She reached out to us.
She said after that phone call, she went back upstairs to her room
and confirmed her camera was missing.
So she just asked her roommate about it.
And the roommate confessed that her and the boyfriend
accidentally broke it,
because they were gonna make a surprise birthday scrapbook
for Terry.
And they were using, they were trying to take photos
and go through the photos
and they accidentally broke the camera. Because I take photos and go through the photos and they accidentally
broke the camera.
I bet she had a bunch of photos on there too.
Aw, that makes so much sense.
And they're gen Z, so they're like,
what is this stuff, is it film?
How do we know how you do it?
Do we just pull it out?
Do you?
That's the explanation that Terri got.
Not sure if she fully believes that or not,
but you could probably find the photos
up on OnlyFans somewhere
until your own conclusion.
We're looking through the photos, but they were naked.
What kind of scrapbook is this?
Anyway, that's pretty exciting.
Oh, that's good. That's great news. Thanks for the update.
I'm glad we got to hear that.
Me too.
