And she didn't end up seeing the call. So now, you know, they're dealing with the repercussions. She's gone through eighth grade graduation. without her dad also her first father's day. So they're doing their best. Kay's taking her to concerts, moving back around family just to be close. But she does want to know how does she deal with, help her daughter deal with the guilt of missing that last call from her dad. Yeah, they're both doing an incredible job.

They're going through grief. They're dealing with it. And it still comes with so much. And it comes with things that you don't know when it's going to hit you. You know, Kay mentioned, like, what do I do with my daughter when she's alone in her thoughts? and these things are getting to her. You know, like, how do I help her in those moments? You know, I brought up therapy, but of course, it's at everybody's time.

And you can't force it at these moments. And before, there's been passings away since the beginning of time, since there were humans on this earth, and grief comes with all of that. And a lot of that is guilt. So we'd like to talk about the guilt that comes with grief. If you had missed a call, if you had missed a visit, If you somehow feel that responsibility of if I had done this, it wouldn't have gone that way. We would love to hear your insight because that is currently what it seems like Kay and her daughter may be going through.

So in 2007, I was in Iraq. By this time, this was my fourth deployment to Iraq. I was attached to a unit who was the first time going. So we had a lot of Marines that were new to combat. And we had this one particular Marine who was very motivated, very, you know, wanted to do things. And I was slated to go on the convoy the following day. And she was, I want to go, I want to go. I want to get my feet wet.

You know, just typical Marines who started to go out. there for the first time. Well, I was adamant about it at first because it was the first time. And it's a lot when you go on the convoy. You're the radio operator. She was adamant. So eventually I went to my to my leadership and I asked him, hey, you know, she wants to go. She, her name was, uh, Katanova. And, um, he was like, well, what do you think? You think she's ready. I'm like, well, she's motivated. She knows the call signs. I think she's ready to go. So we made the switch. The next day goes, then leave for the convoy. I go out to do what I do for that day. I come back.

And the same leadership that I spoke to later on that day, he goes, he puts me to the side. He goes, she's gone. And I knew what he meant by that, but I wasn't willing to accept what he meant by that. And, yeah, she was gone. She, and instantly went straight to my room. And I just kind of lost it for a little bit because, one, she's gone and two, the idea of that that was me. That was supposed to be me, you know? and that really messed me up for years.

Yeah, I bet that guilt of everything. Number one, thank you so much for your service. And having that many tours of duty, I know that that wasn't easy. That alone has definite effects on your mental state, your well-being, all of that. Now to have someone pass and know, like, hey, it was supposed to be me that went. She went. I loki encouraged her to go. And then she ends up passing away.

That's a lot to deal with, bro. Oh, yeah. It was a lot, too, you know, and it was big because, you know, she was so big on wanting to go to make a name for herself, you know, and I thought she was ready to go, you know, and she, you know, we did a rundown before she went, and, you know, she was solid. And, of course, it's not a fun of her own. And, you know, she got hit with an IED, and it was her and the other Marines that lost her left that day. And, you know, of course, you go through that guilt of, you know, just a lot, one close to your mind. And, you know, that hangs with you for many, many, many, many years. it took me it took me sucking it up it took me going to the VA finally and asking for help you know and to finally talk about it because I never talked about it I just held it in and and you know it ate at me for such a long time you know and you know sometimes you're like I'll deal with it I'll deal with it but we may not know the tools too so you go into the VA and saying like hey I need help I know that was a big step but it was really important

I'm sure I'm sure you're grateful that about that oh no for sure for sure it took a long time but eventually, you know, I just, I just did it. And even then when I first learned, it was hard to even talk about it, you know, it was still, I just sat there. Yeah. You know, not to laugh at it, but I just sat there. And I was like, okay, I don't even know where to start, you know. And it just actually has a simple question and it just kind of just got the ball rolling, you know. Man, thank you so much for telling us your story.

And I know that that type of insight is definitely the insight that Kay and her daughter need. It's the people that have gone through the same thing, unfortunately, but that can provide the, the answers and solutions. Yes, of course. Thanks, bro. Thank you. Thank you. All right. We're talking about the guilt that comes with grief of should I have answered the phone, should I have been there?

What happened if I did? I can't believe I didn't. It's of that nature. We got Sophia in South L.A. Good morning, Sophia. Hi, good morning. Sophia, you have something similar that happened with you, a phone call, correct? Yeah.

So my best friend, she was actually really sick for like a whole week. She thought she had the flu. And I kept telling her like, hey, I think you have COVID. Go get tested. Go tested. She didn't want to eventually. She just got worse and worse. And I remember it was a Sunday morning.

And she had called me, but I kind of was like half asleep. And I was like, I'll just call her back later when I wake up. She probably wants to go grab breakfast or something. When I woke up later, she didn't answer anymore. later to come find out that she was actually calling me because she couldn't breathe anymore. She did have COVID. She wanted a ride to the hospital.

She ended up getting a ride from someone out, but they took her to a hospital that is not very good. We always call it to death hospital because everyone we know that goes there comes out dead. Dang. So, yeah, I feel like if I had answered, I could have taken her somewhere better and she could still be here.

Oh, Sophia. That's a lot to put on yourself, Sophia. Yeah. I know. And she has a daughter. She was about 14 at the time. So I kind of took responsibility to be there for her daughter and, you know, just tried to be there as a mother figure as much as I can. I'm sorry.

I'm going to cry. You're fine, Sophia. But until this day, but I've had a lot of dreams where. she calls me and I missed a call. Oh. It like replays. Oh, man. And then one day I was just like,

God, please, please. I just want to know she's okay. And then I'm doing good by raising her daughter and giving her daughter good advice. And I prayed on it or prayed on it. And one day that dream, I answered her call. She told me she was good and I'm doing good by her daughter. Wow.

That's closure. Wow. That must have helped. That must have helped you. It did a lot, but still, I just wish I answered that phone call. And one thing I do recommend is therapy 100%. And, you know, if, I'm sorry, I forgot her name. She should take her daughter to therapy. And these things don't get fixed right away. Therapy's not like, okay, I'm going to go and it's going to get better.

What gets the next? It's a long process. I have family members who have lost their husbands and their kids are in therapy. It's a long haul, and it's not going to be better from when it's the next. You just have to have faith and just keep powering through it. Because that's the only thing I can do right now to just power through it. Thank you, Sophia.
