Starting point is 00:00:00 Sinha. Pals, the deuce is loose. Hello, everyone. Welcome back. It's Achara Cook, joined by Steph Sabra. Hello. And we are watching Beetlejuice, Beetleju. Don't say it again.
Starting point is 00:00:11 I won't. If you're wondering why I'm watching this and when you're like, Achara, you've already seen this movie, I have. I went to watch it with Jabby. But since we watched the first one together, I wanted to watch it with you. That's really nice. Yeah, I'm here. I'm not going to say how I feel about this movie.
Starting point is 00:00:25 If you've seen the review, you know. But we loved the first. We did. One of those ones that I'll never. forget watching it on the channel because I'm like that's one of my favorite movies now it's really it's really fun and I hope you'll have fun with this one as well of course I will not spoil anything um and if you guys want to watch along with us be sure to join us on sinnerjump.com let's go wait what the oh no what the hell to the weirdest dream
Starting point is 00:00:52 oh god it's like a nightmare within a nightmare Okay, that was so random. That was so random. I would be sleeping in a single bed forever. Yeah. Just like I'm never going to leave. Or just sleep in the middle. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Just no space for anyone to sleep next to me. No, no, no. I don't understand if you do have a big bed why people don't sleep in the middle. Such a misuse. That's true. Anyway, what did you think about the movie? It was really good. Oh, we've got like a fun little montage.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Oh, my gosh. My fave. She's the best. Delia. Not enough Monica. Agreed. Agreed. Not enough Monica.
Starting point is 00:01:45 So great. Yeah. Yeah. Aw. Yeah, I thought it was really good. I think it's really like just a feel good, fun movie. Yeah. This sounds weird without context,
Starting point is 00:02:11 but I feel like it's a little less grounded than the first one. Yes. Some parts of the first one, what I really loved about it, it was that it was wild and out there, but it was a cool interpretation of what I hope for the afterlife in a way. Right. You know, where I was like,
Starting point is 00:02:26 I feel like it's following some rules and I can kind and I buy into this world building fully. This one felt a kind of a little bit more and it's not that I didn't enjoy it, but it is just we felt like doing this so we did this. Yeah, it feels totally unhinged to me, but like delightfully. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't, I'm not mad at it, but it is, that's the difference for me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Of why I really enjoyed it, but I think I liked the first one more. I think, and this might be a bit of a hot take, but now having. seen it twice granted i've only seen the first movie once with you i might like this better no way and i feel like that is a really hot take because i literally everyone i've spoken to who loves the original and i understand right because i guess for a lot of people it's a movie that holds a really special place in their heart yeah and that they grew up with i don't have any of that i find like the delightfully macab unhinged energy of this movie so much fun yeah i i hear you and so i'm like i have a good time i don't disagree with what you're saying i just loved the first well like i said it was so game
Starting point is 00:03:41 changer for me where i've always been a tim burton fan but i was like whoa this is one of the most amazing movies i've ever seen so it's kind of hard to top that i will say for a sequel though i really enjoyed it. I thought the new editions were great. I thought Justin Thoreau was so fun and gross and creepy. I like the Monica Balucci storyline. I thought it was a little bit weak in terms of like the integrity of the story. I was like, what rules are we playing by? But maybe it went by me and then in the writer's room. Yeah, I feel like they just kind of were like, cool, let's have him have an ex-wife and we'll have this interesting backstory about why she's doing what she's doing, how they met blah blah blah but then yeah she just disappears for a while yeah and she's such a cool character
Starting point is 00:04:29 i wanted more monica balucci yeah i wanted more soul sucker i think that's such a funny play on words and double entendre and just like perfect for the movie like kind of sexually twisted in a way i really enjoyed that so i just wish i had more of her which is always a good complaint i guess to have when you want more of a character but i love the mother daughter tale yeah I do. That's my favorite part of it. Yeah. Like it's just so cute.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And I feel like that's one element that helps to keep it grounded for me. It's just like their relationship and everything and the the hurdles that they have to go through in order to like come together again. I remember watching it the first time and when the stuff with the dad was happening and like they get to be together again. I was actually surprised because I was like tearing up a little bit. Yeah, I know. I got a little bit emotional too I felt like they could have spent a little bit more time there
Starting point is 00:05:29 yeah totally and just kind of surprised us with like oh my gosh there was something deeper here I was talking to a friend who saw it recently as well and they were like it was cool and all but there's so many different storylines there is that it felt a little bit scattered and like
Starting point is 00:05:45 thinking about it again I'm like yeah I can I can kind of see that there are definitely things that they maybe could have dived deeper into, but like you've only got a limited amount of time. Yeah, it's so hard when you have like an ensemble cast and also the ensemble cast at this level where you're like, shoot, I want to make everyone's story kind of matter because we have Justin Thoreau on set.
Starting point is 00:06:08 We have Danny DeVito on set. Right. We have Willem Defoe on set. Yeah. Which Willem Defoe, low key almost stole the show for me because it was such a fun character. Yeah. That angle alone, I mean, that's the, the, the. Tim Burton, I love that direction was so unique and fun.
Starting point is 00:06:28 He's just, he's so committed to like the character and it's so recognizable as like that actor who's like, I take my job a little bit too seriously so much so that it killed me. But I'm, I'm holding on to it. Yeah. That's my whole identity. Like, it's, it's great. And he's just such a great job. Great.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Costume design top notch, top notch. Set design top notch. All the things that I was like, okay, I really hope they don't change. They didn't. Yeah. We got the practical effects. We had the fun, quirky music. The costumes were just incredible.
Starting point is 00:07:04 And we had just the weird people talking about death in such a strange and honestly cathartic way. Yeah. I think like they did such a great job of taking this story that, you know, came out 36 years ago and continuing in it and updating it. but in a way that felt refreshing and not solely like a cash grab. You know what I mean? Like I'm sure like that informs it to a certain level. But like you were saying about Tim Burton and everything, it's like he went, okay, well, if I was going to do this, you know, I'm doing it anyway.
Starting point is 00:07:40 I might as well have fun with it and, you know, make it its own little thing. And I feel like even if you hadn't watched the first movie, I feel like you could jump into it. oh yeah and have a really great time with it i agree i think that's my favorite types of sequels where they can stand alone yeah on itself without too much description going on and i think they gave just enough exposition to explain but not bore you yeah i think it was just really fun you know there are movies like this where they do they don't need to be perfectly sound in story no because it's not i mean i can recognize that like even though i really really like this one I can recognize that the story isn't the strongest.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And the third act is unhinged. Yeah. It's so good. Unhinged though. Like what? Like what is going on? But okay, I'm here for the ride. May as well, right?
Starting point is 00:08:37 But like I feel like even the first one, though, it was such a wild ride as well. Like in the story itself is like fairly simple. And so we're here for the visuals. We're here to be a may. and, like, delighted. And I feel like the movie delivered on that front. Yeah, totally. And it makes me feel better about death in a weird way, which is such a cool feeling because it's the one thing universally.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I think we're all like, why does this happen? Well, it's like, because it's like so unknown, right? Because we really don't know what happens. And so it's like an interesting imagining of, well, this might be what it's like. It's like a massive waiting room until you finally get to the Great Beyond or wherever. but it's like even the horror in this which like some stuff was really horrific like the baby was super gross disgusting yeah but it was still really fun in that kind of like tim burton horror way where it's like it's fun and then when when you're in the the waiting room with all the dead people
Starting point is 00:09:37 I really enjoy just looking at the details of like each and everyone and how they died I feel like whoever like the costume designers or the I don't know if they wrote it down in the script about who is there but there's so much imagination of like well what would be a really weird way to go and how would we do this and then like even though they're just an extra or whatever it's so interesting to to see like the level of detail and the thought that went into like each and everyone yeah each and everyone they all look so good yeah i miss though i can't remember if she was i think she was blue or red like you know the lady down there the secretary yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Like, was she like the Puerto Rican beauty or something like that?
Starting point is 00:10:23 I loved her. I loved her. So I was kind of hoping she'd be back down there, but I get wanting to have a new set of characters. Yeah. But we got Bob back. So that's true. But like I think also like maybe that was the reason why they couldn't have the Maitland's
Starting point is 00:10:39 back because, you know, obviously they are much older now. Yeah. And so it's like, but as a ghost, you're not allowed to age. Yeah. So it would be kind of awkward, you know. But I guess with. with Michael Keaton and Beatles, he looks the same. To me.
Starting point is 00:10:54 It looks the same. Yeah. Up close, I'm sure there's less wrinkles in the first one, but you can't really tell. Exactly. He looks the exact same. And he still got like that unhinged energy, which I really enjoy. Yeah, he's so fun. I love that we got more Michael Keaton than in the first one.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Yeah. Which the first one, he is just such a massive effect. One of the most, I think, massive characters for the shortest amount of time. maybe ever. Yeah. But this one we got more of him, which I definitely was looking forward to. Yeah, because we all know, you know, at this point,
Starting point is 00:11:28 it's a completely different mindset from when you watch the first movie, which is like the introduction to him and he's this mysterious character, right? But for the second one, it's like, well, we all know who he is and we've all come to see him even though this man grosses me out.
Starting point is 00:11:43 And so I think it made sense to just be like, well, let's give the audience what they want. Yeah. They bought the tickets to come. watch this movie let's let's do it but i think for me still katherine o'hara is like my i just love how she's so self-absorbed but in a completely delightful way yes you know like it's not it's not super malicious no no you're just you're really self-absorbed yeah it's hysterical but can you
Starting point is 00:12:12 imagine being her child or in her family you'd be like oh my god but it is so funny and i feel like it's such a good interpretation of those people that are like, I'm just an artist, so I'm going to be weird about everything. Yeah, like I'm going to just cannibalize my grief and like make money off of this, which, you know, to a certain degree I can kind of understand doing reaction videos. It's like, let me just put my emotions out there for you to see, but I'm not like that. Yeah. How did you feel about the whole dead boyfriend thing? Oh, that was a cool twist. I didn't see that coming at all. I thought his time, like the way he left felt very abrupt, but then I didn't realize we were in the third act. I feel like the movie moved so fast. It did.
Starting point is 00:13:00 So by the time he just got yeated out, I was like, whoa, that was fast, but I guess it wasn't really. But that was a really fun twist for me. So when I first watched it, I was the same as you. I had the same reaction. Like it didn't even cross my mind. That could be a thing. And like the first clue, I mean, in addition to any other weird things like, you know, him not not being able to leave the house, really. Or his parents. Or his parents. Looking. Even one of friends there.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Yeah. Like the main clue is the book, right? But I totally bought his excuse because I was like, oh, okay, I guess maybe he did find it at a weird yard sale that totally makes sense. But then it's like, no, they were telling us that he's off. But I didn't realize, you didn't realize, I was kind of like trying to look at you out of the corner of my eye. Because they had done one more thing that felt like, oh, it's the sequel so they can kind of do what they want. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Does that make sense? Like I was like, oh, like they're just deciding this is how the plot's going. Yeah. I just, I just bought it. I was like, oh, okay, that's fine then, I guess. Like maybe, you know, he's just another weird guy in this weird little town. So I didn't really think too. much of it. No, you got me on that one. I thought that he did a really great job of
Starting point is 00:14:19 being really sweet. Yeah. And then, because you really buy into that. And then he has the turn and it's like, ew, you're just another dispeakable guy. I know. I thought that he was like matched her weird. So I totally fell for it. Man, I'm no better than her. I know. Me too. Anyway, this was delightful. Really, really fun movie. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. How long did it take you to realize that he was dead? Yeah. I need to know that I wasn't the only one. Well, at least I know that you were also duped as well. It wasn't until he was flying.
Starting point is 00:14:52 Yeah. And it was like, oh my God, it's a Casper moment. Anyway, happy Halloween, y'all. Yes, we'll see you very soon. I'm a Chara Cook. This is... Steph's a bra. Ciao.
