Starting point is 00:00:00 Senna. Pals. Hi guys. Hello. It's Steph and I, Steph and I, a Characook, and we're watching Daredevil. I've been waiting to do this with you because I was like, there is no one else I would rather do this with or there's no one else more suitable on the channel, especially because we went through all three seasons of Netflix's Daredevil. That's here on the channel. By the way, you can watch that right now if you would rather, but don't go away.
Starting point is 00:00:27 please watch this with us first. Right. But yeah, so we went through all of that and I was like, well, you know, we love Daredevil, so obviously we have to watch the first Daredevil foray on the big screen.
Starting point is 00:00:41 This came out in 2003. Daredevil starring everybody's favorite superhero Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. Was this the movie where they got together? I don't know. Maybe, yes. I was telling our editor, Mary Black, this morning. I was like,
Starting point is 00:00:57 Do-Devil and she's like, oh, I was like, oh, yeah, it's Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. And she's like, oh, was this the one, is this how they met? This is how they got to get? Yeah, I don't know, is it? Are we going to see Sparks flying the chemistry? And interesting, she's Electra, knowing who Electra was in Daredevil. It's a completely different vibe. Very different.
Starting point is 00:01:19 But I guess this would have been off of her turn in Alias, which would totally make sense. Do you ever watch that show? I did. That was good. The Ghost one. Oh, no, no, no. Aalius. She's like a spy.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Oh. I thought she did a ghost thing that I, a show. Or I'm confusing her with Jennifer Love Hewitt, perhaps. Yes, that's the word. Jennifer Love Hewitt. It all came to me and I was like, I wish I didn't say it. The wrong Jennifer. God damn it.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Too many Jennifer's. But I like them both. I do a lot. Oh, benefers, Jennifer's. Oh, I like all the Jennifers. I like Jennifer Love Hewitt. I like Jennifer Aniston. I like Jennifer Lopez.
Starting point is 00:02:02 The jennifers are doing well in Hollywood. Yeah, and a lot of Jennifer's like Ben Affleck as well. Right. Hey, okay. Let's jump into this genius movie. I know. Here we go. I can't believe this exists.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Well, that felt different. Yes. Very different to what they did with the show. I mean, obviously, you know how we feel about it. the show we love it but this is definitely more of that like campy totally super hero vibe and i think for me my favorite characters were well i don't think they ever said his name as foggy but i'm just gonna call him foggy yeah uh john febro amazing colin farrell was so much fun so fun as bull's eye like he was giving so much yeah so extra yes and then the kevin smith cameo i love it right
Starting point is 00:02:56 It's definitely that Bat Nip, George Clooney, Uma Thurman, that type of superhero vibe. Yes. Like a tad more grounded, but right in that very charactery type comic book portrayal, which is fun. Yeah. Like, to me, this is a really fun watch.
Starting point is 00:03:15 The show is so much more grounded, and it's cool, like, the decision to take a story into a show version or a movie version, like sometimes I don't know, And I'm like, I don't know what would have been better. But watching the Daredevil story, it's because of that legal background, it was so fun to watch it in a show. Yeah. In addition to other things I liked way more in the show, but that just the story itself of watching Fisk and like the slowness of his villainy.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Yes. As opposed to other villains who have like one big thing like the Joker. Yeah. You know, like he was like a crime boss. So I liked it that story in a show version. but for a condensed version, this is just really fun. Yeah, it is. I mean, the villains are very two-dimensional, right?
Starting point is 00:04:02 Like, the portrayal of Kingpin here, it's just, it's very one-note. No Vanessa. Yeah, it's just like, oh, I'm big and bad. I mean, it... Oh, ha, ha, ha, ha. Like, in terms of physical casting, he was perfect, perfect. But, like, yeah, it was a different time, you know? I don't even know if at that point we'd really had.
Starting point is 00:04:25 superhero shows, exactly. And so it was right at the start of the superhero movies. And so, you know, this was what they had to work with. And they were kind of like, yeah, let's do something fun with this. And it is very much, like, of the time, like the music choices and everything. And even just like all the costumes with like all the leather. It was like, how much leather? Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Not enough. Everything. The crocodile leather, her leather. His leather. His leather. Everyone was just like leathered out leather up the wazoo, the Dutch angles, the kind of like...
Starting point is 00:05:01 It was very close to when Matrix came out, right? And so I feel like there was probably some sort of inspiration there in terms of like the color and look. For sure. I feel like so many movies in that time period, like underworld, all those movies were very much in that vein.
Starting point is 00:05:18 They're like, wow, Matrix did this in an Oscar-worthy way. Let's go. Yeah. The leathery. The leather is in. The leather is in. I'm not mad at the, I love the leather moments.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Yeah, like, the aesthetic was really fun, and I thought that the shots were really cool as well, because it really did feel like they were heavily inspired by the comic books, like the colors, the tone of it, the darkness, and, like, some of the frames looked like they could have been straight out of a comic book. Some of the action, though, did take me out of it a little bit, just because it was just so very obvious. that they were doing a lot of clunky wirework. I certainly don't know that much about stunts back then. But today, it just looks so much more real and visceral.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Like when someone does a flip, they're probably actually doing that flip. And it looks really cool. As opposed to being pulled. Yeah. Like somehow it just looks like the flexibility isn't there. It literally just looks like someone's like, you know. And that could be the direction of stunt work too. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:06:23 And so it, you know, it is what. it is for the time period it definitely was just you know it was fun it's it's really campy it's so campy it's so fun there's no part of that where i was like i didn't like that it's really fun like to me that's better than it's better than ghost writer it's probably just as fun as ghost writer to me right yeah you kind of have to be in in the right head space yes yes be like oh i'm not going to take this too seriously I loved the relationship, the chemistry between Electra and Daredevil. Yeah, it was good. It was really cute.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Yeah, very sexy. This is very sexy. She is very bonita. The setup of The Father, too, was cute and with the priest. It was nice to see all, like, the inner workings of the characters, but it's so condensed. Yeah. It's so hard to imagine it outside of the show. Yeah, because, like, the show really gets into the nitty-gritty of the characters.
Starting point is 00:07:19 whereas here it was just very broad strokes. Which is like, I mean, what can you do? You've got an hour and like 40 minutes. Right. They did okay with that. Ben Affleck's portrayal of Daredevil was just, you know, it's once again just very, there weren't too many colors that he was playing with. But I don't even know if that's his fault.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Yeah. To me, Ben Afflex, one of the best working actors, obviously. Yeah. Really a true legend for his writing ability, his story. storytelling is directing, like, it's crazy how talented this man is. It's just, like, sometimes I think he's so loved that we, like, throw him into everything, and it's not necessarily the right project. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And also, like you said, the dialogue was quite predictable. Yes. Justice is served. Like, who's going to say that? It's kind of corny. Right. But, you know, that's the tone of the movie. So I liked it.
Starting point is 00:08:14 And so, you know, it was a fun time. It was. It was a fun time. It was a fun time. I'm glad it wasn't a long time. It was, yes. It was a quick, fun time, and Evanescence rocks. Rocks.
Starting point is 00:08:27 You guys, truly. Bring me to life. Bring me to life. I am literally, right now, I'm going to go turn on my music. Yes. And just, like, sing along to Evanescence. Full on. Which I might have been doing last night in preparation anyway.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Is the rain coming? I hope so. The rain. That was it, you know, that was the most iconic moment from me, because that was the only part that I remember from the film was just like the thing with the rain. Seeing her sparkle. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:55 It was cute. And it's not even like, it wasn't even that. I think in my mind it was way cooler than it was in the movie. You know when you watch something when you're really young and it's, and you're so impressionable and it's just like that one thing that sticks in your mind. And I was like, there was a rain thing. And then he could see her in the rain. And it was glorious and beautiful and so romantic.
Starting point is 00:09:17 That's true love. happened here and I was like, huh. In my memory, it went a little bit differently. I did match up. Yeah, like, I thought they had a whole fight scene in the rain. Oh, my God, yeah. But it didn't, it wasn't like that. You were confusing them.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I was confused. My memory was faulty, but I definitely remember the rain because that is like, I feel like that's the most iconic thing about this movie. Yes. And, like, I really appreciate the creativity that, you know, the lengths they went to for the creativity in this to kind of show things in an interesting way. And just kind of let us into his world, which was really cool. Agreed.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Yeah. Agreed. You guys, thanks for joining us on this journey. Let us know. Are you excited for Daredevil born again? I'm cautiously optimistic. Yeah. Disney Plus has not been my total vibe.
Starting point is 00:10:06 No. Show-wise. Yeah. But Loki Season 2. It was good. It was good. But I just, the Netflix series were so good because they could get darker. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And they tried with Echo. Please don't do Punisher, please. I'm so afraid for a Disney Punisher. No, no, we cannot. Anyway, you guys, let's know your thoughts in the comments below, and we will see you next time. I'm a Chara Cook. This is...
Starting point is 00:10:31 Steph's a bra. Ciao!
