Senna. Pals.
Oh my goodness. I haven't been this excited for a new episode in a minute.
What's going on, everybody? I am Jabby Kauai, joined by Char Kirk.
What's up?
We're watching Shogun, episode of three. This one is called Tomorrow is Tomorrow.
Okay, let's get into this. Here we go.
Joy.
What?
I said joy. Yeah.
I'm enjoying it. I'm enjoying it.
No, I like it a lot. I really enjoy this episode.
Like, we're just learning more about the characters through their interactions and their
action throughout like more and more we're seeing that blackthorn is an honorable guy you know and and the
fact that he has helped other people throughout like he helped the sailors survived and so they helped
him yeah and then Rodriguez also was like all right well you saved my life so I'm going to help you
out you know we know exactly what type of guy he is and also he's so determined as well like he won't take
no for an answer. His tenacity. Yeah, his tenacity is incredible. He's just like, okay, fine. I'm not,
I'm not staying behind. Hell no. I'm going to go. And he figures a way out. And I think
Toronaga looks at him and he is intrigued and also impressed by his character. And what I really
love about Toranaga as well is he is a very smart guy, very resourceful, always like one step
ahead of his enemies. But additionally, I think the quality that I like the most from him is
that he is someone who is willing to learn. And I think a lot of the time, especially I would
imagine when you're living in like 1600s Japan, where you haven't been exposed to a lot of
things and you have prejudice towards people outside of Japan, like just the way that they
talk about the foreigners. They're like, oh, the barbarians. I mean,
It's not like people, Europeans, weren't saying the same things about, like, other countries and other cultures, right?
So there's this sense of like, no, our way is the correct way and you guys are the barbarians and you're wrong.
But what I love is he's just so open to learning as much as he can.
And so he sees Blackthorn and he's like, no, I see an opportunity to like gain more knowledge and he's really open to it.
And I think that's, like, going to serve him really well going forward.
Well, what you're picking up on with John Blacktham, I think, is something that they kind of share in
common is that they both are like, there's got to be a way.
Exactly.
There just has to be a way.
And I love that attitude.
I love that tenacity because I identify with that so much where I'm just like, there's got to be a way.
And like, that moment where he, you know, was left behind on that little boat, he's like, no, there has to be a way forward.
And I love his attitude.
I love that he cares for his fellow shipmates still.
He didn't just leave him behind.
Like, he's very honorable as a character,
and I don't think that I was really considering that possibility
at the outset of the show.
You know, he just seemed like, survivor,
like, I just got to get through this,
like almost from a selfish kind of point of view.
But what he's demonstrated is just how much he cares about human life
and the people that kind of matter to him,
even though he hasn't been to the companionship of these people
but very long, he still cares about their survival as well.
Yeah, I think it's interesting that he basically abandoned his family, and yet it's almost like his crew, his shipmates, everyone around him, they become his family.
And so they become very important to him, and he wants to save them.
Yeah.
You know, I wonder if they're going to dive deeper into that, or if they can.
It's like, what exactly informed his departure?
Because, like, he just didn't want to be bound to land.
He didn't want to be bound to anybody.
He didn't have loyalty to Queen and Country.
he wanted to just be out in the ocean and be free.
Yeah.
And so, but here he's with them, but he feels like a strong sense of loyalty,
like you just pointed out in the way that he didn't back home.
So what's different here?
Maybe he just, like, didn't belong there, but he belonged with these people.
Maybe, yeah.
Maybe he's just, like, discovered his new family, as it were.
Yeah.
Or maybe he is able to have some sense, some modicum of freedom, you know, with them somehow, some way.
So, but anyway, yeah, the thing that kind of bothered me a little bit in this episode was just that battle sequence
in the forest.
It wasn't as cool as I was hoping it would be.
It felt very kind of messy.
And I'm just like,
all right,
well,
let's see.
I'm invested in the story.
I'm invested in the characters.
I'm invested in the politics and everything going on.
So all of that is intriguing enough for me that I'll just let that go.
I think a lot was built up for me,
especially off the last episode,
with seeing Toronaga do some damage.
And I was like,
okay.
I mean,
let's just move forward.
It doesn't really matter.
It wasn't anywhere near.
on the level that I was thinking it was gonna be.
I mean, his single fight in Avengers Endgame
was way cooler, albeit that was like five years ago,
but still, you know what I mean?
I was hoping for a little bit more.
And then when Tora Mariko and John Blackthorn
got involved in the fight, I was like, okay.
It seemed like there was a lot of instances
where stunned people were trying to make sure
the actors didn't get hurt.
And so they would like,
yeah, I'm gonna go this far
and not actually try to hurt you.
and then you're going to, you know, block and it felt like a lot of that.
So it wasn't maybe rehearsed enough or shot well enough or whatever, whatever.
There's a whole host of reasons that maybe went into it not looking excellent for an otherwise
excellent show.
But yeah, I still enjoyed the episode quite a bit.
And it just left me in a place where I'm just like, oh, I want more.
And I can't wait for next week.
I know.
I can't wait for next week.
I'm also really enjoying Yabuchige.
I think he is a character that I'm just kind of like not sure about.
because in the first episode, he comes across as a guy who just thrives off of, you know, pain and torture and just a lot of horrible things.
And then he appears to be a double agent.
And so I'm like, I don't know how much I can trust him or not.
Like, what point is he going to turn or is he pretending to be with Ishido, but actually he's not, you know?
And so I find him really intriguing.
He's mysterious.
He is mysterious.
But I think that Toranaga is smart.
Like, his son is so innocent to the ways of the world, right?
And so he's naive.
He's never been in battle.
And he didn't have the experience of growing up as a hostage like his dad did.
And so he's all like, oh, you shouldn't trust him.
He's your enemy.
But then I think it's actually really smart of Toranaga to actually keep him close.
Because, like, what's the saying?
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer?
Correct.
He's doing the right thing, I think.
I think that with Yabushiga, he, everything for him is like if the price is right.
Yeah.
You know, he had something very specific that he wanted and Totonaga has made a promise to give him that thing.
And so with that in mind, his loyalty seems to be to Totonaga.
And all, moreover, his life was spared.
Toteraga did not have to do that.
He had a dude ready behind him to chop his head off.
And he's like, you're going to live.
Tell me what you want.
Yeah.
So we can sort this out.
Yeah.
And I think that's what's so cool about Toronaga as well is because he sees everything.
He knows exactly how to deal with people because he's observing and watching.
And he's like, okay, Yabushige responds to things.
He wants things, you know?
So let me give him things.
And he's always just keeping a watchful eye.
And that's what I really like about him because he's that wise character who sees everything.
Well, he's also a survivor.
What's interesting about him, but he's like,
he's caught between surviving and customs and respect and all that stuff and desire.
There's a lot going on with him.
There's more to uncover there.
I don't think he's going to turn against Torunaga.
That's not, I mean, that's not what I'm anticipating anyway.
Yeah, I hope not.
Because, like, actually, in the beginning,
I wasn't really liking him just because of the type of person that he was,
but then he's also quite fun to watch.
So I'm enjoying him now.
He was leading the crew of people that, like, murdered that person,
that innocent bystander,
remember when Blackthorn was being walked?
He also boiled a dude.
That too.
Yeah, he's awful.
I forgot about that until you just said it.
But he's got some kind of weird darkness in him
that the show is going to explore.
I'm sure.
Yeah.
Because who does that?
Who boils a person to hear him die
and to like expect some kind of magical thing to happen?
You know, and also the weird pseudo-cuck situation
that happened with the concubine
where he just like to watch.
Yeah.
I was like, what, who is this guy?
So, a lot to uncover.
You know, powerful guys have weird kings.
Yeah.
Anyways, you guys, thanks so much for hanging out.
Hopefully enjoyed that.
I'm Jabby Kauai.
This is Achara Kirk.
Peace out.
