Sena.
Now, we are back for Shogun Season 1, Episode 9, Crimson Sky.
Here we go.
I'm Ketchi Mariko.
Aliko, get away from the door.
What, what, what, what's?
What?
Mariko, what?
Oh!
Oh!
Oh!
Oh my god!
Okay.
That hurts.
I feel like I need a minute.
Oh, dang.
Hey.
Yo.
Oh, man.
They, like, lured us back in.
Well, the false sense of security.
And then she died anyway.
I feel emotionally wrecked.
Emotional damage?
Yeah.
That damaged me emotionally a lot.
I feel a little bit.
annoyed at the writers for doing this to us.
Well, she wasn't messing around.
She was like, look, if you try to trap us, if you try to do anything.
But like, the thing is, they didn't try to kill her, right?
When the ninjasons came into the room, the assassins came into the room, they were
pulling her.
They could have just cut her, but they were pulling her.
Right.
And they kept on pulling on her when they just executed everybody else.
What, I didn't, I wasn't clear.
and what he was trying to do,
was he trying to confine her somewhere off campus?
Like, you know what I mean?
Like, outside of Castle grounds?
Like, I wasn't exactly sure what the idea was there.
But in any case, they weren't planning to kill her.
They were planning to, as far as I could tell,
they were planning to hold her somewhere, right?
With that in mind, she was like, look, you try to do me like that.
I'm taking myself out.
Yeah, you force my hand.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so she was committed.
Like, that was, she was ready.
told, she told, uh, Torana like, I'm ready. Like, oh, man, this sucks. Yeah. Oh, man. It hurts.
Why I got to do me like this. I know. It's like the whole show, she's been talking about how ever
since her father died, you know, she'd been asking her husband for permission. She's always just
kind of talked about it, but so far managed to survive, right? So, to then,
have her actually have to go through with it especially when it seems like right now especially with
her relationship with Blackthorn like there's something for her to live for you know and she's found
purpose in being his translator and she has started to enjoy life again with him around but you know
she is a woman who is very loyal and she's very true
to her word so if she says like I'm gonna off myself then that's what she's going to do you know
well she was murdered well yeah like she in that instance yes yes she was she was fully ready to
you know now what that was rough I was expecting a completely different episode by the way off
of the title well yeah they misled us there as well yeah I was expecting it to
I feel as duped as, you know, the titles of Star Wars, like, Attack of the Clones or whatever.
I forget which one it was that bugged me or the Clone Wars.
One of them, no, it was Attack of the Clones.
No one cares.
Shut up.
You don't know me.
Anyway, yeah, I was expecting it to be like a full-on war kind of situation.
Yeah.
And, well, it wasn't.
It was an act of war, if anything.
Well, this is an act of war, right?
Yeah.
Because everything that we're learning about the culture here
is that they don't expressly say what is going on.
They don't say what they're feeling.
Why did you shrink in your chair?
I just can't with this shit.
Okay.
It hurt too much.
Yeah.
But, you know, Ishido not allowing her to leave with the other ladies
was basically showing to everyone.
like they are actually being held hostage there
because they all know they're being held hostage
but no one's saying it because you know
we can't say it but him not allowing her to go
is saying loud and clear
okay so I'm not allowed to leave
so I am being a hostage
which in and of itself is probably an act of war right
but what's the goal to start civil war
to like you're trying to show
So you're trying to create chaos within the castle walls, right?
I guess.
Or to just bring it to light publicly.
All of this stuff is going on behind like veils and eightfold fences and whatnot.
And so being able to say the thing and point it out publicly, I would imagine, means a lot.
Uh-huh.
And so now it's like, oh, okay.
Well, she died with purpose.
She died with meaning, I guess.
well it is what she said right which i thought was really beautiful as well
even if like i don't want to agree with it or believe it
but she's like your life can have purpose and equally your death can have purpose right so
what if there's like a secret episode 11 where he a blackthorn finds a sensu bean
and gives her a sensu bean brings her back i wish
or he finds the dragon balls
God damn this show
that hurt
it did
it's not supposed to go like that
no but I mean there was so much
going on that was so interesting as well
like I love all of the stuff
where it's like things being said
but they're not being said like even
the meeting with Lady Ochiba
and Mariko
yes she brought her
there under the pretense
of, oh, the heir wants to talk to the Anjin, but it's not, you know?
He's got a first grade level of Japanese.
How's he going to get by?
Like, who's going to translate for him that the guy who should have helped them get out of the gates and didn't?
The Christian guy, the castle guy?
Oh, the old dude.
Yeah, no, not the priest.
Well, I suppose the priest.
I'm talking about the Japanese guy who spoke English to him, like the walking talk guy.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like, but what's he fighting for at that point?
Like, he's pissed at Toranaaga.
right you know like who now what for him yeah i i don't know man i how do you wrap this up in a
satisfying way with one more hour like how is there's too much to cover here i feel like man my
one of my good friends has been watching this show and he's and for the last like two three
episodes he's like seriously i this show is like blue balls like i keep expecting something more to
happen and then it's not happening yet and he's like every episode recently i've just been like
yeah yeah and i think definitely i felt that on this one where with the title crimson sky
we're expecting that uh massive fight or whatever
that we've been holding out for this clash.
But maybe Crimson Sky is her.
Maybe she's the secret weapon.
Maybe that was the plan all along.
There was certainly a lot of blood.
I mean, a lot of people got executed
in the last like two minutes of the episode.
Yeah.
So you're right.
I mean, that's possible.
And Toranaga, I mean,
he plays all of his,
I was going to say pawns,
but like all of his pieces on the chest.
board right so last episode he played hiramatsu right and uh that was a move and that hurt this
feels like another move that hurts but there's purpose behind it so it sucks but he's playing
this hardcore game of chess where the the pieces are actual people i wish i wushiga said
something i guess he was between a rock and a hard place himself well that's
That's the thing that I'm wondering about with Yabushige right now, because obviously when Ishido said, like, okay, I'm going to give you your life, you don't have to die, but you have to do something for me. This was the thing that he was talking about. And he had to, he let those guys in. But then I'm like, okay, they didn't know that obviously. And they've brought him into that storage house. Because he's got to keep up appearances. Right. So then what happens now? Like,
Is he still, I still, what I'm saying is I still don't really know what to make of Yabu Shigei
because sometimes he's like on Taranaga's side, sometimes he's on Ishido's side, but I guess,
he's like a little finger. He's just, he, he, ultimately he's on his side. Yeah. I mean, he's about
his own survival. Right. So I'm like, okay, where are the chips going to fall and who side is he
going to end up on? Well, I think we know that Taranaga's going to win. He has to win.
there's no way it kind of makes me mad that she died that's like i get it i understand it kind of
makes me mad though oh yeah it's upsetting it's like did that have to happen i'm i mean i'm really
really sad maybe next episode we'll get to finally hear what her poetry was but like dang she was just
so ready to just be like i'm ready to give up my life and end it all
You know, she didn't have to stand in front of the door.
If she had stood far enough away, it would have just broken the door.
Yeah.
But she had to make it count somehow.
Yeah.
And, like, have everyone bear witness to what she said so that they could, like, relay her words back.
How are you going to feel if you find out she's not dead that she just is in coma or something?
No, I mean, if she's not dead, she's been burnt to a crisp.
so she's going to wish she was dead.
The bomb hit the door first.
Did you not see her light up like a phoenix?
I know a phoenix comes back to life, but...
You said it.
Writers heard you.
They're rewriting the show right now.
No, she's dead.
They're shooting pickups right now.
She's dead.
She's dead.
All right.
Stop, stop it.
I know.
Stop pushing it.
It was a good episode, though.
I liked, there were many things that I liked about it.
I mean, I already said it.
But anyway, I think it's probably,
overshadowed by the fact that one of our favorite characters just died so that's rough
i feel for blackthorn though it's like he the only i feel like a lot of what was driving him was
her you know yeah she was a huge motivation for him and and she just took herself out of the game
it's like babe like all this has been for you why do me like that
Although I did find it like strangely romantic how when she was ready to do the thing and the other guy wasn't there to be her second and like no one was going to step up to help her and she's just looking just really scared at the level of pain that was about to ensue and he stepped up like we knew he would.
I was like, obviously that's messed up, right?
it's a messed up thing to have to do,
but I think that it shows
the depth of his love
and care for her
that he would do this awful thing
that will A, break his heart,
B, obviously, erase her from the world
and C, damn his eternal soul to hell,
but he would do that for her
because he loves her.
That's how I saw it.
Yeah, I guess.
It sucks.
I mean, it's to me taking all that out of the,
equation it's just like there is a modicum of self-sacrifice in there because it's it's not something
he wants to do no absolutely not you know and so he's giving up what he wants to give her what she
wants but i think once again it's part of his journey to finally really understanding the
japanese culture and understanding where she's coming from like he did ask her he begged her you
know like if you're not going to do it for whatever reasons for your god
yeah
do it for me
and when he realizes
that like
she can't
because she's duty bound
to do this thing
that her lord
asked her to do
or commanded her to do
he
he's come to
accept it
and it's just so interesting
seeing him like
flip-flop between the two cultures
I would love to know
what Japanese audience members
think of that
like just that
because I'm on Blackthorn side
like and maybe it's because
I was raised here
I'm just like, yo, let's bounce.
Like, come on.
And I mean, that's what I like about how at the very end, right, you know, all of the Japanese people in the storage barn or whatever, they're all just like, oh, my gosh, I guess we're just resigned to this fate.
Meanwhile, Blackthorn's like trying to push the thing.
He's like, come on, just like.
That's me, yeah.
Help me.
Like, he's going to fight.
There's always a way out.
If you just got to look for it, though, there's always a way forward.
There's always a way out.
You just got to look for it and proceed.
instead of just giving up.
Right.
I mean, I guess it's giving up, but it's also acceptance.
No, I'm not talking about Mariko.
I'm talking about everybody else in that room.
They didn't do shit.
Oh, yeah, fair.
I mean, I think it's also, like, just at that time as well as a woman,
you were probably like, I can't move heavy stuff.
I'm not going to bother trying.
Yabushige as well.
I know.
I don't know what Yabushika's deal was.
Um, anyway, okay, so feelings.
I, I, uh, enjoyed this episode.
I enjoyed the tension that they built.
I was hoping for a little bit more, shall we say, badassery in that fight that she had as she
was trying to leave the castle.
Um, I was just ever so slightly underwhelmed by that fight.
Emotionally, I get it.
Yeah.
Emotionally, it works.
It was just like, I guess with consideration of the fact that these weapons are heavy and they
can't harm her exactly.
the fight actually made sense.
You know, it's just that I think from years of watching martial arts films,
I have this expectation built up of what is supposed to happen.
And it came nowhere near that,
but it still did what it needed to do for me emotionally.
And perhaps it was favoring realism over floweriness
or whatever else it could have been.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, I thought.
Because then I'd be complaining about that.
But like, it hit me where it needed to hit me.
It could have hit me harder.
I didn't have full on tear.
but it still
it bothered me
in the ways that it was supposed to
I almost cried more
after she realized
that she didn't have to go through
with the self-situation
after she got the permit
that almost made me cry more
and then the show was just moving on
I was like okay Phil
I just put these away
you know
I was so I was so
depleted from that
that when she actually died
I had nothing left
Yeah. It was shocking to me when that happened and I just needed a minute because I felt like I just needed to cry just because like all of the emotions were stuck right there. And I was like, I can't move on until like I let these feelings out in a constructive manner. Going back to that fight though, I agree with you. I think I thought it was going to be bigger than it was. But I actually started feeling emotional in that fight.
too just because I could hear how frustrated she was. And I think I relate because I am one of those
people who, when I get very frustrated or angry, I'll cry. And so I could feel just like the rage
and how she was just like, oh, I really want to just kick all your asses. But I'm in this stupid
dress and these stupid shoes and I just can't. And this thing is really heavy. And there's so many of
and I just need to make my point.
Just let me go.
And so I connected with that.
And I was like, oh, man, I feel you.
I feel you.
Not that I've ever had to fight a bunch of people
to get out of a castle.
But yeah.
Y'all be good.
Peace out.
