Starting point is 00:00:00 Senna. We're watching Sky! Hi! What's going on, everyone? This is a film that neither of us have seen yet. Until today, here we go. My girlfriend became my arch enemy, my arch enemy became my best friend, and my best friend became my girlfriend. But hey, that's high school.
Starting point is 00:00:21 Never comprehending the race... Very cute. I really like that. Me too. That was a lot of fun. You know, there's something to be said about... that all being contained in one film because today there's like sequel baiting and just anthologies or you know trilogies or whatever all the time if this was made today that's what it would be or it would be a series
Starting point is 00:00:42 that goes on for too many seasons it's like just self-contained that's it done but i can't help but long for like more just because it was so much fun and it was you know anyway what are your feelings it was really fun. I can't believe I missed that because that would have been so at my alley 2005. Yeah, I feel like, how did I miss that? It was not even a teenager yet. Well, the commercial didn't necessarily appeal to me when I saw it. I looked okay, but like, it's aged wonderfully. Really? Yeah, the CG's not fantastic, but. But they don't overuse it. Right. So it doesn't really matter, but I just thought the cast was so fun. Uh, the story was cute. It was quick.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Yeah, it was a little predictable, but I loved it. Yeah. So Michael Angarno is our main actor in this. I feel like we've watched him another thing. Oh, the Forbiting Kingdom. That's why I recognized him. Yeah, and then what else? Because I watched part of the Forbittal, almost famous.
Starting point is 00:01:42 That makes sense. I saw that a long time ago. Vaguely remember that. I remember his face from the Forbidden Kingdom. I never finished that film. Those are the two instances that would, like, I would recall. Oh, he's in Offenheimer? What?
Starting point is 00:01:53 Where? He plays Robert Serber. I don't know. Okay. Yeah. Anyway, he's done a lot of stuff. There was so many people in that movie. That's true.
Starting point is 00:02:01 And Danielle Hannah Baker. Where has she been? Because I used to be, I really, she like ran Disney Channel, I feel like. She's in the Flash TV series. Okay. Friday the 13th. Oh, she's done a lot of superhero related stuff. She's like proper superhero veteran.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Like TV vet. Yeah. Well, this film as well, but yeah. Yeah, yeah. That's crazy. Cool. What? Nicholas Braun?
Starting point is 00:02:24 Yeah, I knew we knew him. I just didn't remember the name. Oh, my God. I had no idea that the dude from, Greg from Succession. Yeah. Was that guy. He looks totally different. He looks the same.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Well, I mean, like he was a kid. Oh, like, vibe wise. Yeah, yeah. He just, he was a kid, you know. Now he's gotten much taller. That's crazy. He's not, he doesn't have a bleach blonde hair. No.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Anyway. So fun. Yeah. Well, how did you feel about even, like, you said the story was a little bit predictable. And I think, I think, agree with you. It was predictable. You could see the beats coming, but they did such a good job with the characters that I didn't care. I still enjoyed it anyway. Oh, yeah. I feel similarly. Back then, it probably wouldn't have been as predictable as now we've seen so many, or I have, uh, superhero
Starting point is 00:03:11 movies. So you kind of understand the play of a superhero getting their powers, making some bad decisions and then getting reoriented. But I thought it was really a cute place to play it, like a sky high, a superhero high school. I think they're, it's so true. It's like, on one end, I'm like, I love that they have made this all one movie, but on another, I'm like, this totally could be a series.
Starting point is 00:03:32 And it would be so fun. I think that it's cool that the source material is so rich that I would have loved to see it expand even more. And, but I'm like, I don't know if they would have gotten Kurt Russell for an entire season for Disney. They had him for the Godzilla thing recently, and he was acting.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Oh, for the Apple series? Yeah, yeah. So it's possible today that they would have been able to secure him for a TV show. You know, Apple's got money, though. So it's Disney. So they could have done it. I would totally watch it now. I know Kurt Russell's older.
Starting point is 00:04:07 He still has the swag. Yeah. He still has like that charisma, you know? And so I would totally, you know, love to revisit this series with him. It would be an interesting experiment to bring back that cast and see what happens. But yeah, they really did, like, compress all. the Harry Potter books into one film, you know? Because like, I just, I couldn't help but compare it to that just because it's like kids
Starting point is 00:04:30 with these special powers in a school and there's like this sort of low-key, I guess it's like a classism in a way because of the people who are sidekicks versus people who are heroes, you know, I guess muggles versus, I don't know how it's been a minute since I've probably visited Harry Potter, but you know what I'm saying. Like there was even, it's between the different houses, I guess more than anything. It would be cool to like, if not with the original cast, like just kind of, retell this over the course of a TV series and see what you can do when you explore it
Starting point is 00:04:57 in more depth with the same camp in terms of the tone. Yeah, I love the tone. I don't want them to like update it to be more serious and whatever. Just like keep this exact vibe. It's like it was beautiful. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:10 It was handled. They had some serious Batman vibes. Yeah. Old school and it was fun. I don't feel like we've gotten a film like this in quite some time where, you know, end to end, if I wasn't laughing, I was smiling. I was just like into it.
Starting point is 00:05:22 You know, they had fun. characters. They managed to, like, give you people through both the writing and the casting, people that felt different from one another in a way that there was no overlap at all. Like, the glowing guy, the hamster girl, the Popsicle, our main guy, you know, the stronghold family, like everyone felt very individual. I feel like the only one that I really didn't feel any sort of a sense of connection with is the mom. She's the only one. Yeah. You know. She kind of was like shoot off. Yeah, a little bit.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Whether it was the actress they chose or just the writing of her or a combination of the two, I just didn't feel anything when it came to her other than she was just like the stereotypical kind of mom. Mom, right. That was it. Yeah. You know, nothing deeper than that. But Kurt Russell, he kind of just stole the show.
Starting point is 00:06:08 He totally did. Yeah. I could have done with more of him. But, like, he perfectly served the story. And my favorite moment in the movie was like a non-superhero thing where it felt very much like the kind of thing that's very relatable where he goes, and I told you, mom that I took your Xbox away. I don't have it. Yes, you do. I just, oh, I love that because it's exactly the kind of thing I would do. Totally. You know? Yeah, you do now. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:06:34 You got to commend the production for being able to handle so many babies. Like, they tell you never work with kids or pets. Yeah. And they had a whole, like, I don't know what you'd call that. This is like a bunch of babies. Conveyor belt. A conveyor belt. Yeah, exactly. I'm trying to think of like what I would have done differently. And the only thing would be like, like to improve the development with the mom character and that's it. Because like the campiness of the fight scenes fits this so well. Yeah. Because that's
Starting point is 00:07:00 the thing that would be different today is they would try harder to make the action cooler. It's like, no, but it was at the service of what they were going for, which is that sort of Batman, you know, Adam West era sort of vibe, you know? Yeah, and I liked also how the bullies were actually
Starting point is 00:07:17 really villains, which makes sense. I mean, they were so obvious, but you still, they're at a hero school. So you're, that's the only part that I was like, oh, I, if you, it's not a huge surprise, but I wasn't expecting them to be on the, on, totally on board with that. Yeah. Other than when you see the speedster taking the. Yeah, that's your first clue.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Yeah. It would have been cool, I guess, as a sort of book end to slightly better develop the ice princess lady who goes. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Because now she's going to be one of the main characters, girlies. So. Well, she, she goes with, um, uh, Warren P. piece guy. Yeah, yeah. So it's like, yeah, that would have been... So who is she? Yeah. Like, she just
Starting point is 00:07:56 functions, functions as a power. That was it. Yeah. Uh, but yeah. I don't even know what her face looks like. Yeah, I, honestly, I don't either. I have no, I just saw like, yeah, maybe it was like a cameo appearance for like one of the crew people's kids or something or the producer's kid. I have no idea. Anyway, uh, it was a lot of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I can see why it's something that people love. Um, I don't even know like the, what was the box office at the time? Sky High, box office, Kurt Russell. It didn't do fantastic. On an estimated budget of $35 million,
Starting point is 00:08:28 the film gross just under $64 million in the U.S. and $22 million, bringing a total of $86 million. It's aged well with audiences. I guess it's found a new life on either video or streaming or both, which is great, you know. So, cool. I enjoyed that. Hopefully you guys enjoyed it with us.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And that's it for now. I'm Jabby Kauai. This is... Steps for Bra. Peace out.
