Starting point is 00:00:33 Welcome back. It's a Chara Cook joined by Steph Sabra. Hi. My sci-fi sister. And we are here watching Stargate. I've heard this is very good, but I don't know anything about this. At all. None.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Nothing. But we're going to find out. So let's jump into it. Here we go. You sure you want to do this? He's going to be. be their savior. You're going to be all right?
Starting point is 00:01:05 Yeah, I mean. I'm going to be all right. Yeah. You're going to give the necklace by? Oh, there. Yeah, there it is. I will. Boy, do you guys have a story to tell?
Starting point is 00:01:22 Yeah. I'll be seeing you around. Dr. Jackson. oh bravo yeah wow that was honestly not what i was expecting yeah at all yeah thought we were going to be in space way more yeah that was like very very different i think it was just i wasn't expecting that kind of fusion between like old and new you know and it was done in such an interesting way and I wasn't expecting a story about like slaves freeing themselves like wow this was like mind blowing and like the the costumes the effects the set and
Starting point is 00:02:14 everything I feel like it still really holds up like it looks really good of course with today's tech we could make like the travel and everything look a bit better but I think with what they did I'm like, I 100% buy that. Yeah. The way they were moving through space and everything through the Stargate. So I was like, yeah, that works for me. You know, that's enough for me to be like, yeah, I get it, you know. And I'm on board with what is going on.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Yeah, totally. I think it looked really good. We kept saying we love the costumes. Yeah. I just feel like there were so many costumes involved and they all looked really great. and super believable. Like sometimes you see these types of movies where you're going back into a different vibe and, you know, olden days and it's like they look new.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Yeah. You're like, okay, I think you just made that. And then it kind of takes you out. Everything looked really worn in and good. Yeah. And also it must have been really fun for the costume designer as well to come up with costumes that were inspired by Egyptian times, but also still having, like, a sort of modern or, like, high-tech edge to them.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Totally, yeah. Like, I was really digging the guy, uh, Ra's little finger covers. They looked so cool to me and, like, all of the jewelry and everything. Yeah, totally. Like, it was like beautiful. Yeah, really, really beautiful. And then the language as well. Like, I have no idea when, you know, you're on set, when you're on it, on a movie.
Starting point is 00:03:53 like if the language that they make is actually like a real language or if it's based off of a real language but then it's it's just like its own thing but I thought that all of the actors were really able to you know still communicate everything while speaking a language that maybe they don't necessarily speak and like everything was coming across really really well So I definitely appreciated that. Yeah, I agree completely. I thought the story was really cool and unexpected. Like, sometimes you see these space movies that are all amages in some way or another to Star Wars.
Starting point is 00:04:35 And it just is kind of talky or they go the comedic route, which is fun. We've seen a few of them now. Yeah. And this one was kind of totally in its own lane. Yeah. It just really surprised me. in a lot of ways and I like the story a lot and I like the characters and I like how we got to this play this dimension quickly fairly quickly yeah and spent time there with and a lot of it was like
Starting point is 00:05:01 you know they really took their time with the storytelling and so as you're watching it you're going like okay I don't understand because this is not what I expected because when you when you watch a sci-fi movie and and oftentimes like when you're going from earth into another unit or another place, like usually they're so much more advanced than us or it turns into a thing where it's like, now we're just fighting and everything and it's just crazy. And then here it was like it feels like they just stepped into the past. Like how could that have happened when we know that there's been like at least, you know, a thousand plus years where they've had time to progress civilization? It just seemed weird that they would show up and it was like, it's like
Starting point is 00:05:46 we're back in Egyptian times like what happened and then when they explained that I was like oh my gosh that makes so much sense and it's so diabolical as well to enslave people like that and then obviously the best way to keep them that way is to not allow them to record their history to not allow them to you know get together and share information and continue to progress and grow and yeah it just made me really sad I know. I guess if anything is like Star Wars was because of Dune, more so in the Dune world than anything with resource. I like the use of resources and mining for this resource and what it was used for to build the Stargate. And then these people who weren't able to use to write or read. And then that just answered. I love when you ask a question and then it's answered. I just didn't know. I just didn't know. I just didn't. know constantly what direction we were going in, but then when they answered it, I was like, oh, okay, this is, this is getting really interesting. Yeah, and like everything makes sense. Although I'm still convinced that the old lady, who was the little girl in the beginning, has something to do with Daniel. Like, it just seems weird to me that they would have brought up, oh, are those your parents? Right. Oh, no, my foster parents. I'm like, okay, so nothing came of that,
Starting point is 00:07:16 though but like literally I totally hear you yeah everything else in this movie was paid off yeah you know like Kurt Russell's character the colonel and the fact that he had this whole thing about guns because of his child and then the necklace and like so many things they wrapped everything up neatly but I wonder if there's a version of this that was extended or something like that yeah where he went home yeah and then the ladies like also i wanted to let you know yeah that you're my child but maybe it's just there for us to kind of speculate about right and worry about right because it is true it's like why did she need to know his foster parents who meant clearly not that much to him right or in the sense of the story so i agree with that unless it was just something where they were like oh we just
Starting point is 00:08:11 wanted to show that she did her research because she was like, oh, Angela being evicted and all of that, but it just seemed like a weird detail to be in there and not pay off. I agree completely. And then I love the music was great from start to finish. Very epic. Very epic. Like, who did the music? David Arnold. Oh. I don't know if I'm familiar. No. But yeah, the music was just so good. It just perfectly paired with the storytelling and I don't know it reminds me of a lot of movies like scores that were coming out from like the the 80s and 90s where they just kind of had like a really magical feel to them yeah yeah like etherealish yeah and then when you listened to it if you just listen to the music your mind would be transported like the images would come and like they were
Starting point is 00:09:06 paired perfectly with whatever movies that they were being paired with, this absolutely did that for StarGames. Yes. Yeah, I think that it's like for these types of movies that take such a big swing and can so easily kind of look corny and feel corny.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah. Especially because they're made in the past. I, everyone has to come to play and it felt like everyone did. Like the costumes and music. Yeah. The cinematographer, the direction, the actors. It all really worked out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:36 has huge credits yeah oh there's a stargate continuum whoa should we watch it i don't know wow sherlock and then i saw a few really big names yeah he's done a lot of stuff in the u k sevens yeah independence day Godzilla but obviously he had to have used part of the original yeah for sure iconic iconic but it might be my favorite theme yeah Godzilla's it is so good it pumps you up yeah very much so am I rooting for him always this is just amazing it was really good very very good one of my top space movies I would say for sure although I guess we didn't really spend too much time in space no I know yeah I guess so it's a little bit because yeah because we just traveled through but I love the use of real people yeah on a real set yes and it's like some things could have been enhanced with our technology now like the main god's eyes you could tell those were like put in post and when he talked and it looked a little corny but everything else it's like I don't know sometimes they ruin things with the real screen right yeah and like just looking at it.
Starting point is 00:11:03 it's kind of incredible, or not even kind of. It just is incredible because you know that they're shooting this on location. Yeah, it's probably so hot. Yeah. And like they've built sets and like all of those people are real. And so when you see the crowds come in, it's just like, whoa. Very cool. Or real.
Starting point is 00:11:22 And I guess maybe nowadays, maybe our brains have become a little bit more savvy to CGI. And even though maybe you're not thinking like, oh, they've just put a bunch of people in the crowds in CGI like they've just duplicated people and stuff right but I feel like in in a weird way your brain kind of recognizes it yeah like a subliminal level even if you're not like really really about it at the front of your brain yeah whereas this you're like it's like you're thinking about it because you're like oh those are real people and it like makes you think about it in the opposite direction but it reminds me of I just don't think we do it as much anymore because I think we spend most of our money on effects.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Right. As opposed to people on set. But when we watch Troy, it's like those are real people. Yeah. Masses. And it just makes the movies insane to watch. Yeah. And like just the costumes and everything as well.
Starting point is 00:12:19 And even I really loved the helmets, the headpieces. Yeah. They felt like they were go in a museum. Yeah. But also like they were moving independently. Very good. And, like, you know, like all the things on the side and everything. It was like, whoa, that looks so cool and, like, really high tech as well,
Starting point is 00:12:40 while also looking like works of art. Like, bravo to the team who did all of that. Yeah. Or the practical department. So cool. So cool. They don't do them like this. No, they don't.
Starting point is 00:12:55 No. I mean. And we have to shout out our fluffy friend. He looked awesome. Yeah, the fluffy friend. Fluffy friend was amazing. So good. I wonder as well if that was like anything to do with Jim Henson or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:13:11 But oh yeah, we've got like a huge makeup department here. But yeah, and that creature was both adorable and gross at the same time. Yeah, yeah. Like I would not want his saliva on me, but I definitely would see a friend in him. Yeah. Like definitely you would want to cuddle a little bit. Yes, yes. Keep your tongue to yourself.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Yeah. like I don't even let my dog lick me disgusting gross she's a rat catcher but yeah this was this is really fun this is awesome I hope you guys enjoyed it let us know your thoughts in the comments and also if you have any fun facts
Starting point is 00:13:44 I'm sure there are many for a movie like this do comment them below because I love to read them and we will see you next time I'm a charicouc this is stuff's abroad Ciao!
