Senna.
Pals.
We are continuing forward with the penguin, season one, episode six.
Very excited to jump right back into this, or waddle back into it, as it were.
So, let's do this.
Here we go.
She just found out his mom is alive.
It's going to cut to black here, isn't it?
Damn.
Oh, God damn it.
Wow.
Oh, man.
Is she going to take her?
Is she going to kill her?
Oh, gosh.
I'd take her.
What a painful cliffhanger.
Oh, man, it's so good.
Shit.
So good.
That is such a painful cliffhanger.
Like, I can't do anything for the rest of the...
Until next week.
You even know what to do.
I'm just going to be spinning in this chair.
Until the bearings wear out.
Like, I'm just...
Damn it.
That was a really good ending.
But we both knew, like, you really should go and check that out.
Oh, this kid.
I hope he does not die so that she could take his mom.
Oh, man.
What do you think?
she's going to do. All I can do is speculate. I can't even comment on the episode. All I can do is
speculate now. Like, what comes next? Like, okay, let's let's let's look at both roads. She kills her.
Then what? I don't think she's going to kill her. I think she's going to beat the crap of the kid.
Like that kid might be an inch of his life. Oh, man. Oh, man. Just so that he can tell Oz that she
took his mom. So that Oz will have to come to her. So whether or not the kid survives,
I definitely think she's going to take the mom.
Like, if she kills the mom right then and there,
gosh.
That's not going to happen.
I don't think that's going to happen.
It's more advantageous to watch him suffer, to make him like,
because if she kills her and then he's just going to come looking for her,
he already knows his mom is dead.
Yeah.
But if he does not know his mom is dead and he goes crazy
because that's the one thing that he has left.
Because mom is there saying, my boy, my boy did this.
Good Lord.
He would go ballistic.
Yeah.
He would go absolutely ballistic.
Yeah.
That's a war.
That's automatically war.
Like now, because he's got all those people on his side.
I mean, I don't know how much they would listen to him as if he was like a general or something.
But like, he's got a platoon of people and it'll get real violent in the streets over the death of this one person.
I don't think he necessarily, he has them in terms of business.
Like, I think they're willing to go along with him and take on the Moronis and the gigantes in terms of like a power struggle.
Yeah.
Like, ultimately, yeah, there may be, like, a gang war that's coming.
Yeah.
But do we think that they're going to do that?
Just.
Vengeance?
Yeah.
Like, they got my mom.
We got to go and get her.
No, but I'm not, I mean.
That's not my mama.
I'm not talking about the triads.
I'm talking about the people that work from underground.
Oh, those people.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, who knows.
I meant, like, the whole alliance he just built.
Yeah, yeah.
No, I get you.
Yeah, because we already saw her not kill one person.
So it's entirely possible that, like, that's an old woman.
Like, what do you, how are you going to benefit from killing her?
I also think the one, the reason I don't think she's going to kill her
because she is a little girl who watched her mom die.
That's true.
So I don't know, even though she took out her entire family, they wronged her.
Yeah.
And Oz has wronged her.
That doesn't necessarily mean that the mom, that she's going to take out the mom.
Also, in a way, that kid saved her life.
Remember, because the car hit?
Yeah.
So, she's kind of owes him one.
That's another point.
That's a really good point that I forgot about.
But she probably...
Because he wanted to get Sophia.
He didn't know that they were going into like...
He didn't know what Oz had done.
Yeah, he didn't hear the whole conversation.
And he still doesn't.
She may try and get the kid the same way that she turned his gold girl.
I really like this episode.
I thought it was good.
I thought it was strong.
I can't wait to see the whole thing because I think that the whole of it will be such a powerful season.
you know um it's not that often i find a show where i'm just like yo every single time i'm like
please just don't mess up the end like please just stick the landing you know i usually only have
that during a movie where i get halfway through i'm like please don't mess this up like this is
going so well so far that's how i'm feeling about the show is is it like always at a 10 in terms of
like being perfect no it's not i mean i can see that sometimes there are slower areas and whatever
But on the whole, like, I just, I love this show so far.
I think it's so great.
I think it's very rare to find a show that every single episode is a banger.
Like, every single episode is a slam dunk.
And this one, even though I said this one is a slower start than every other episode,
I still stick by that.
Yeah.
But I do think that this unfolded in the same way that the episode that was the flashback
that I know a lot of people didn't like.
But this unfolded, even though it wasn't a flashback, it revealed so much, you know, like about Moroni, about Sophia and Moroni, about her, the way she built that connection with Oz's girl.
And even with the kid, because even whether or not his stutter comes back, it wasn't there after he took out squid.
You know what I mean?
I didn't hear it after he took out squid.
But whether or not it comes back, you know what I'm saying?
And like I feel like there's so many things that are revealed about each one of the characters
that even though this started out in a slower-paced kind of like way, showing us Oz and his
business plan and Sophia and Moroni and like their plans, you know, and watching Sophia
search for Oz, it ended in such a powerful way that is setting us up that next episode is
going to jump right off. I felt myself twisting up so much. I'm going to still.
Brandon Shealy's thing.
I could have, like, made diamonds with my butt cheeks.
I forgot exactly what he said last night.
He had cold between it.
If you had cold between his butt cheeks.
You'd have a diamond.
He'd pick a diamond because the way I was driving.
Like, because, like, the scene work in the lady's apartment was so,
it was so stellar because it's like, it's so simple.
It's just, it's just movement.
It's just simple movement.
But each of those moves to me is just so powerful.
And it's like, there's a lady with a gun that you're looking at.
And you're just walking towards her with your drink.
Because you're like, you've just accepted whatever's going to happen is going to happen.
Yeah.
And I'm going out on top.
They were evenly matched.
Yeah.
Even though they were two different people at two different times in, you know what I mean?
Like, or two different like environments and backgrounds.
Yeah.
They still met as two lions.
Like, I mean, that was not, there was no power dynamic.
There was nobody above the other.
They, she literally was just chilling.
with her drink. Like, I'm going to make myself a drink. If this is the end, then, you know,
let's do it. As long as you make sure you protect my girls. I've never seen a scene like that.
It was so strong. All of the scene, even the scene with Oz and his mom, like, it was so good.
The kid was squid. Like, all of his choices, all of his, like, you could see his thought process.
Yeah, you know what? You're absolutely right. Because I wasn't thinking about the scene work in that
moment, even though it's just as important because I'm looking at this punk guy. I don't know.
I'm so glad you pointed that out.
Because, like, when I'm looking at the older talent in the, in the, you know, not the kid,
it's easier for me to pick up on, like, the quality of it.
But, like, that scene you're talking about is like, oh, yeah, like, that guy they chose to play that the gangster or whatever.
He was a well-cast person because I was concerned about him.
Like, when I'm watching the show, I'm legitimately feeling uneasy with what's about to happen in that situation.
Because of him and the other, you know, Oswald's a guy.
I'm like, oh, God, what's going to.
And I don't even know, like, if he's actually got a gun on him, I'm.
I'm assuming he does
and then when he does it
his reaction to killing him
I'm like yeah that's about right
Yeah it was
Because even the way he turned around
and fired he almost fired blindly
Like I wasn't even sure the bullet was actually
Gonna hit Squid
But like it was this moment of like
You know like it actually
I actually did it
You know the shock wasn't just that
Squid was dying
It was also that he actually pulled the trigger
In so many ways
This entire episode should have been called
like the Battle of Titans because everybody was a titan in this in this episode
Moroni and Sophia Moroni or Sophia and the frigging like therapist which I still really
don't know what to do with that guy I don't know what his role is in this but but even like
Sophia and the woman then you have Oz and the entire all the guys the alliance him with
the dude and the the senator or the councilman like this literally was about everybody
revealing and owning up to
their power. And it was so
good. You might be able to speak to this
better than I can because you've studied
writing more than I have, but one of the
things I've heard is
when it comes to scene work, you always want
to give your characters
or actors activity to do.
And oftentimes that was happening
throughout this episode, if it was making a drink
and having the drink in hand, or if Oswald
was trying to get the thing working, or
they were cooking in the kitchen.
There was always activity while they're
talking about something else. Yes, because it's alive. Yeah. Do you know what I mean? Like,
you have to keep the, the scene alive and make it real for the audience. Because most people
don't just stand and look at each other and talk. You know what I mean? Like, they're not just
going to, like, even us, like, we've been moving our hands. We've been like, you know what I mean?
Like having a conversation with your hands is still moving. You know what I mean? It keeps movement
alive. But if you're busying yourself, it seems like something that would happen, like,
if you were talking to your mom in the kitchen and she's cooking, that's like what Moroni was
doing. He was like, you know, trying out his eggplant parmesan, like, whatever it was. And she was
like, okay, let me help you. She's chopping the cilantro or the parsley, whatever it is. Like that
that shows you that there's life in the scene beyond the words. Yeah, I really, really love that
apartment scene so much. I just like, you know what it is? It's so great about it is that each
move in that scene was very, very planned and thought about, but it didn't feel like that in the
slightest. Yeah. It all felt very organic and natural, like the way people might move around in a
space like that. Yeah. I just bought it. And it's like, I sit back and I go, wait, all of this was
like mapped out, you know? And it's just, it's so beautifully done that you just like, that's how
you know it's working is when you're just captivated by it, you know? Yeah. Because it was almost like
that scene between those two women, which I loved because a lot of times with two women, they try to
make it catty. One, going after the other in this like really visceral way. And these two
Women were just, it was like, yeah, Sophia was the shark and she was the person treading water.
But at one point, it shifted that Sophia, when she sat down the gun and just had the, not set it down, but lowered it and had this conversation and was like, oh, you still think I'm the hangman.
Let me illuminate you.
You know what I mean?
And then everything shifted from that moment because everything the woman thought she knew to be true about eyes was no longer true.
So then the shark was no longer circling.
Then there was just two people in the water having a conversation like, oh.
Yeah.
Maybe you're not the back.
You know what?
If you're going to do it, then do it.
Yeah.
And then Sophia was like, all right.
Yeah.
I've never had loyalty like that before.
Peace out.
Yeah.
And that, she in turn got the girl's loyalty.
Yeah.
That was amazing.
This episode did something that really good writers do and frustrates the shit out of me.
But, you know, you have the mom character who's just, like, frustrated and dealing with her shit.
And she finally has a W where the power comes back on.
She's got the music.
She's dancing.
She's alive.
And then you see the villain there in the corner waiting with the crowbar.
And I'm like, dang, she just won.
Can she have a break?
But you know what?
It was so incredible to me that she was standing there with a crowbar.
Like, what is the significance of the crowbar?
Because she had a gun.
but yet she wanted to make this hurt personal yeah yeah it was really exciting i mean yeah because
i forget where i heard it maybe tarantino said it but like when when someone choke someone to death
it's more personal like it means something more to them they're they're they're it's more passionate
having a girl bar is like adjacent to that in my view agreed you know yeah like that's what i'm
saying yeah we're saying the same thing i'm like she wants that to be painful yeah yeah because this
isn't just about him stealing her product.
Right.
He killed her brother.
Right.
And even before that, he sacrificed her life.
That's true.
Yeah.
Like, he has taken so much from her.
It's really hard to root for Oz, even though I am.
I'm rooting for him to have a win, you know?
But at the same time, if she wins, I'm kind of like, you understand?
I think that's really good writing, especially when you're dealing with a bunch of
who are effectively bad guys in this world.
It's like, that's really powerful writing
because you're dealing with a bunch of characters
who are essentially just trying to survive
in whatever cards, with whatever cards they were dealt.
They're just trying to play this game
as best as anybody else would.
You know, that's what's wild about the whole thing.
I love this episode.
I thought it was great.
I'm so glad that they stuck the landing
on yet another episode of The Penguin,
and I'm looking for it next week.
Thanks so much for hanging out.
I'm Jabby Koi.
This is Courtney Scott Wright.
Peace out.
