We're continuing with The Penguin.
This is Season 1, Episode 7.
Courtney brought in her fun Halloween costume
in order to keep up the spirit of Halloween
through the entire weekend.
Yes.
So Penguin, Episode 7, here we go.
If it ain't the Penguin, you made it.
What you called me?
Sophia wants to see you.
Uh-oh.
Oh, dang.
He found him quick.
Shit.
Wow.
Well, dang.
I mean.
I was wondering where the episode was shorter.
I'm like, there has to be something huge in this
because generally speaking, companies will make their shows, their episodes shorter
because there's like something explosive in it.
And here they had that big event with the explosion with the bomb.
First off, they had that action sequence in the sewer and then the bomb.
And then like the chaos that was unfolding up top in the aftermath of it all.
I'm like, okay, that's why this is a shorter episode.
This is a powerful episode.
And it tricked me because I was like,
Okay. When they rolled up, I was like, it's got to be a bomb. Because the dude ran.
But then when they opened the back, I was like, okay, it's a misdirect. It's her.
Oh, no, it's a misdirect. It's a bomb. Like, they double did me there.
They really did. Because, like, when you said it's a bomb, and I was like, would she blow up her own product?
And I was like, oh, yeah, she would blow up her own products in order to take him out.
Are you turning Asian? She would grow up.
Did I say that?
Yeah. That's what I heard anyway.
I said blow up. Oh, that was not the intention. I haven't had words.
Clearly.
It's okay.
You're hanging out with me, so it's all right.
Oh, gosh.
I give you a pass.
Oh, my God.
You're making it worse.
You're double downing.
You know, I asked you, like, would she blow up her own product?
And you were like, I don't know.
I mean, I think she's in there.
But I really, in that moment, I was like, oh, man.
Yeah.
She might.
She might blow up her own product.
Yeah.
But I really thought that, like, her mom was, his mom was in there.
Well, the thing is, she said she wanted him to hurt.
Like, okay, so it could have, if she was talking about a person,
We were spot on.
It would be Vic or his mom.
But in order to really hurt him,
she's taking away all of his power.
Yeah.
Like completely.
Which makes sense if you think about it because it was her idea,
which he has leached onto since the first episode.
Because her brother came in,
told him, told Oz about this product that, you know, this new drug.
And he just decided he was going to take it, you know,
not knowing that it came from Sophia.
And now here he is like,
Still, it's my business, my product.
You know what I mean?
Like, none of it's yours.
None of this has ever been yours.
But yet I love that she did that
because it's about removing the power
that he thought that he had.
Yeah, she's in an emotional state
where she's like, she'll cut off her nose to spite her face.
She's in full de-gaff mode.
The whole opening with the brothers was interesting
because there was something they didn't show you,
which you rightly pointed out.
They did not show him being remorseful.
And that's interesting as a character trait
or choice because he just he wanted his brother's out of the picture he had jealousy and he wanted to
have his mom all to himself there is an edipus rex sort of relationship there even though it's not
sexual yeah there is an ownership to it he want he like he just wants her but it's like it's this weird
unhealthy thing where he wants her all to himself but it's also what drives him to keep doing what he does
and keeps him alive i definitely agree i didn't really register for me that it was like in an
an Oedipal complex and something like that,
but, like, I don't think that
he wanted them to die. Am I saying it wrong?
Is it, is it Epis Rex or Edipus?
No, no. It's Oedipus Rex, but it's an Oedipus complex.
Okay, got you. Okay, cool. Yeah. So, no,
you were right.
Yeah, but like...
She's nodding along as I say it dumb.
I'm just messing. No, it's like, that's what I was processing.
That's what I was processing in my mind. I'm like, this whole damn time.
I've been ingrishing.
I hate you. I would have told you.
I don't think he wanted them to die.
He was actually nervous, like, where are they?
They should be back.
But yet it never dawned on him that they would ever be in actual danger.
But that's also a child.
It's a child's mind, you know?
Right.
You know, and like he didn't really think that they would die.
They were playing.
They stuck down.
He didn't, it didn't dawn him, like you said, like the rain, like the fact that he, I'm
sure he didn't notice that it said overflow tunnel.
I do think that he had, you know, he wanted her attention, all of it.
Because the only thing that he had, you know what I mean?
Like he wasn't like them.
He couldn't rough house or he didn't try.
Whatever the reason is, that first scene was so heartbreaking and so hard to watch.
Like, it was literal torture.
Like, because the way that they did it, I love the way that they did it because the sounds,
like the crying out, like, help us, help us.
And as more rain comes down and he's watching the Fred Astaire,
I love the way that they used the film and how Fred Astaire, like, took out each dancer
at the same time that they're actually, like, drawing their last breath.
and then to go back to it and it's just the rain.
Yeah.
That was horrible.
The Fred Astaire thing is also symbolic
of what's going on in the current timeline as well
of just taking people out and stuff like that.
Yes.
I really enjoyed that fight scene
because it was brutal.
You know, there's a whole range of fight scenes
that are out there in 2024
because you'll get like the more martial artsy stuff.
You'll get the more like gritty stuff.
And this is definitely more on the gritty side.
And I like the way it was shot and choreographed
and performed.
because it felt like, you know, there was this,
it was this very tight space, and it felt harrowing.
And like, I didn't know how it was going to end.
And then for it to culminate in,
the dude just exhausted himself and had a heart attack,
I was like, what?
Like, that's such a, I've never, never seen a fight scene end that way.
Never, never, never seen a fight scene end that way.
That is brand new.
That was brilliant.
I love the way they did it because it was almost like they were evenly matched.
Salvatore Moroni's, like, age, the penguin and everything that he is, that Oz is dealing with, physically as well as emotionally, wondering about his mom.
And, like you said, like the cramped space.
I love the cramp space actually helped because they were both so, like, it was very visceral and hands-on.
But at the same time, because there's these two people that have these, like, I don't want to say differences.
I'll just say differences.
Oh, my God.
Okay, okay.
No, I mean like, whatever.
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
I thought you were talking about something else.
Okay, go ahead.
No, I mean, in terms of like, not necessarily disabilities,
but they all, like, that cramped space made it so much more, like, thrilling.
I think that the choice of the camera angles in that scene was perfect
because when I was watching it, there was no part of me that was, like,
picking it apart and thinking, oh my gosh, like, I can't see what's happening.
That's often a complaint of mine with fight scenes, like,
especially when you have, like, a Liam Neeson fight scene, like, taken part eight.
You know, it's just like 18 camera angles from to jump over the fence.
That's what I'm used to seeing sometimes.
And it frustrates me, whereas here, like, they were making very careful choices in the
choreography, the way it's shot, the way it's edited.
And even more is like the sound effects, all of it worked together in a very beautiful,
cohesive way that made it feel like, you know, unsettling in a great way.
Another element that I was expecting in that fight, because Oz does everything kind of a little
bit like a cheater. You know what I mean? Like he uses every advantage. And I was really surprised that he
didn't like find a rock on the ground and like try and hit him or like throw dust in his face or anything
like that. The fact that he just literally expired. Like he literally just had a heart attack to the point
that like Oz is like, what are you doing? Like he was almost offended. He was offended that he didn't
get to finish the fight. And that to me was so fantastic because he was like, well, no, no, no, no. No, this was
my win, which is ultimately the entire series. Like, this is, this is my moment. This is my win.
And he keeps falling short. Yeah. He just keeps being ripped away from him. The victory keeps being
ripped away in this, like, ridiculous way. And he just keeps on going. Yeah. No, I appreciated
that a lot. It was like, there was two unexpected things. This had, this, this, that best had a lot of
unexpected moments. But that was definitely unexpected with him just being frustrated by the situation. And it
made sense with his character where he's like, no way, hold on. His ego got in the way of the
moment. Instead of just moving forward and keeping on with business as usual and, you know,
taking that w, he was mad at it. He's like, not like that. He's like, he didn't want it like
that. You wanted to like this over here. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't have anything to do with that.
That just happened. Exactly. You know. I think this episode did such a great job. Raising the
stakes from the beginning, like from the very beginning with the two brothers, we've been wondering
what happened to his two brothers the entire time. And now the way that this started,
it just continued on and left us in this place of like frustration and like anxiety. I had
anxiety that whole show. Like the whole episode. I was like, oh God, what's happening? What's next?
And I loved the fact that they kept me like on the edge the entire show. Even with the little girl.
Right. Yeah. And the tea cattle? So we don't know what happened with Vic. That's still a question
mark but yeah the little girl situation had me on my edge of my seat because i was like what do you
how do you fix this like that was the big burning question for me is like how do you sort this out
without taking her out because that's just like a loose end now and like i think the doctor's going to do
it i hope not like she that little girl doesn't deserve that but she doesn't and i think sophia
will take him out because of that okay i think she'd rather go down yeah then have that little girl
be tortured in the way that she was.
That's why she was so upset about the idea that, like you said,
you know,
that she had been hurting herself.
Yeah.
I mean,
as soon as I saw the marks,
I was like,
okay,
I'm pretty sure I know what that is.
Because,
like,
she's in a,
that you see how dingy that,
like,
that space is.
And it's very cramped.
And she's all by herself.
She doesn't have any family.
It was an interesting choice of,
like,
what truth to tell?
Because she's like,
oh, you think I did it,
followed by your family was bad.
And like,
yeah,
and I'm glad they're dead.
Yeah.
I mean,
The little girl's face was like, what am I supposed to do with this?
I immediately had like a flashback of Kill Bill, you know.
Vernita Green.
Yeah, when, what's trying of Vivica Fox?
Vivica Fox, Vernita Green.
Yeah, she got killed.
And then there's that whole setup for a Kill Bill movie we haven't gotten yet.
Yeah, it just made me wonder like, where does that story go?
Is there an eventual revenge plot that happens between those two characters?
Yep, that's exactly what it made me think of, too.
The whole thing with her doctor is it always, I think that you're right.
I think that he's always got his own interest at heart,
and I think she knows that.
I don't think she's blind to that.
She knows that about everyone in her circle,
especially growing up in that world.
But he just has an extra level.
He's like skeevy-op.
Like, he just, he always has that sort of tone to him in his voice.
He's the only character in the show where he's, oh,
every line, every delivery.
I'm like, what else is like, what's going on?
Because he hits it all hard.
Yeah.
Sophia, we have a problem.
Exactly.
Who are we going to do?
What do you think?
Is she going to be a problem?
I'm like, what are you doing?
Does it need to be that hard?
Do you need to go threat level orange with every single line?
Like, what are you doing?
It all comes across like Batman or something.
I'm like, dude, relax.
He's up on the gas.
He's secretly Batman.
Yeah, exactly.
I just want to piggyback on what you said earlier.
I really do like the way that the whole opening was shot with the kids.
It made incredible use of sound effects because you didn't see it.
And you didn't need to.
I didn't want to see it.
I wanted to stop.
Yeah.
I think that the way they showed us is like with that very simple shot of the door closed
and the sound of Exhibit pounding and the kids crying out, I'm like, oh, God, my heart.
Like, they're just innocent kids, you know?
That's crazy.
And you can see exactly why that would drive, I mean, who knows what informs dementia,
but you can see why that would make a woman crazy losing two of her kids like that, you know?
If she even knows, I don't know that she knows what happened to him.
How did you feel about the scene between her and Sophia?
That was incredible.
It really was because the mom never lost her power.
Because usually, like, we're looking at her, and in some ways, in some ways, she is fragile.
Her ability to recognize reality and, like, where she is because of her dementia.
Like, but she was on for that whole time until Sophia mentioned the brothers.
Right.
And that triggered her.
That just made her anxiety, like her mind literally just shut down.
Yeah.
But I loved how Sophia, um, she softened.
She softened when she saw
When she said Francis
Where do you think you are right now?
Right
You know like she didn't get mad
But even when Francis hit her
She didn't get mad
Yeah
Once again Penguin
The acting is amazing
Incredible throughout the entire episode
Colin Farrell is always doing a bang-up job
When he opened the back of the car
And he was ready to like just
You know
Prepare himself for his mom
Yeah prepare himself for the inevitable
Like his mom's gone
And he could see like the coat
Like everything coming over his eyes
And then the switch
When he realizes there's a count
down clock and it's like 17 seconds yeah it's like it it takes time to process because you
were feeling one thing and you're not ready for the other thing and he like he you saw all that
in real time I thought it was beautiful how he played it out I thought it was great and then to have
to run into the the space where your brothers died and that's where you survive that's where you
survive that's that's really that's exactly what I thought yeah that moment when he ran I don't
know have you have you ever watched the Sopranos yes in the very last season when
Tony Soprano, he's standing on a porch talking to, like, I think his lawyer or whatever,
and he's in his friend's backyard, and all of a sudden, his friend is talking, talking,
talking, and he turns around, and Tony is just running across the lawn, and you see the
helicopters and all the FBI and the squat coming in, and he left his friend to, like, take it all.
And Tony, Tony Soprano is just hustling down.
That's the funniest thing that I have ever seen on TV.
So, like, to see the penguin, like, when he turned around, it wasn't funny.
But he ran down that bunker.
Like, that's what it made me think of.
Like, you just hauled ass and left everybody.
That was shitty.
But, like, you're dealing with a bunch of shitty characters.
I mean, 17 seconds, you know what?
Well, those people had his back.
To your point.
To your line, like, thank you.
You're the only army I have.
Like, I couldn't do this.
Oh, you protected your investment.
You protected me.
And I'm so grateful.
And then you leave them.
Yeah.
Well, there's something he could have done.
I would have been like, run!
And then, you know what, as you're going?
I legit thought he said run.
Him running is enough.
Do you know what?
In his defense, him running is enough.
That's enough.
But the dude went over to the car to look.
Why?
Like, why?
Why would you do that?
That was a Darwin award.
I'm sorry, listen.
That was a Darwin award.
Listen.
Again, here's and here's, listen, I'm going to say this and I'm going to say it.
That is not characteristic of a black person.
It wasn't a black person
It was a white guy
No, it was a black guy
It was the pretty black guy
That I was like, oh hey
Are you sure?
I'm pretty sure
I thought it was a white dude
That got killed
Now he needs to look at
You got me all
You got me all screwed up
I can't see the one black dude
You know what?
I don't see color
Well in that moment
I'm like no black dude would have ran
If he was right
If I'm wrong
And he was the white guy
Then okay cool
That's the pretty black guy
Isn't it?
That's a white guy
The black guy's over here
That's not the pretty
one the pretty one had the hat on
that's a white dude
okay well
if you say so
I think it's the pretty I think it's the pretty
black guy that dude looked white to me but I have
no idea okay I could be wrong
but if it was a black guy
any guy I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm not trying to be racist
but like any guy you see somebody run
you really should know all good sentences start that way
I'm not trying to be raised shut up
I think whoever that guy was
he should have ran
You should have known better
And you just should have ran first
Yeah, powerful episode
I thought this was fantastic
It's just amazing like how
It's, I mean, now I'm scared
Because we have one episode left
And I'm like
Don't, you better stick to landing
Yeah, you got to stick this landing
You have had every single episode
Has been really good
You are rocking a, like, 90% right now.
You are rocking a solid A.
All you got to do is bring it home.
I'm a little nervous, too.
I'm not going to lie.
Yeah.
Like, there's so few shows I can think of where I'm like,
yo, every episode.
Like, not every episode is at the same level, but dang, there's not a bad one.
No, not one.
You know what I mean?
It's like, dang, this is crazy.
There's so few experiences I can think of where I've had a string like that.
It's like Daredevil season one, arcane.
And now this.
I'm like, whoa, that's wild.
The only one to have it, like, with multiple seasons being amazing for me
and just, like, utter joy is Avatar the Last Airbender.
Yeah, fair.
Where do we go from here is, like, big question.
Like, that's the big thing I'm speculating.
I'm like, how do you...
I don't even know.
So he put Vic on a mission.
He's like, go get an army.
Like, what does that mean exactly?
Because I thought the army was in the sewer, right?
So, like, who is he going to get?
Who does he go to?
Yeah.
Like...
Who's left?
Exactly.
I mean, the only one left is maybe his girlfriend.
Like, who's she got?
Nobody.
no he he's gonna nobody there's there's literally nobody i mean he's got to come back with something
though like what do we think he's gonna come back the batman
where is the batman in all of this all everything's everything's blowing up and the batman
doesn't even show up i can't get a batarang i can't get anything like what no so apparently
matt reeves has a video on youtube i meant to watch that explains why the batman doesn't show up
is he a college no i don't know i haven't seen the video yet
It was one of those instances where I stacked a bunch of videos on YouTube to watch,
and I had them all in a playlist.
And it's like I closed out the playlist before I watched it.
And I forgot.
And then I never came back to it.
And now we're here.
I'm like, oh, shit, I should have watched that.
Is this the Batman Begins time?
Is this when he's with the League of Assassins training with Rajalgoo?
Raz Al-Goo?
Is that why he's not there?
I don't know.
I have to look at that video by Matt Reeves and find out.
Because it is peculiar that he wouldn't just show up.
And especially after an event like that, like, that's the time.
you know for him to make an appearance a little cameo something just like the end of the of the film yeah
but anyway really appreciate this episode you guys thanks so much for hanging out hopefully you enjoyed it
too i'm jabby koi this is Courtney Scott right peace out
