Collector Nation - Inside the Allocation Chaos, Record Sales, and Sourcing Pressure in Today’s Hobby
Episode Date: May 29, 2026Ryan Alford, Brian Ludden, and Bella Shafer are back with a wide-ranging conversation on what the hobby feels like right now from inside the business, not just from the outside looking in. This episo...de covers the headlines everyone sees — multi-million-dollar card sales, product releases, and major market buzz — but it also gets into the friction points hobby businesses are actually dealing with every day. Ryan and Brian talk through sourcing issues, the realities of running without allocation, the strange economics of sealed product, and why the hobby can still feel oddly resilient even when broader consumer pressure is real. What makes this one work is the perspective. Ryan brings the card-shop operator lens, Brian brings the market and product lens, and together they make sense of why collectors keep chasing, why certain price spikes still happen, and where the hobby may be more insulated than outsiders realize. via Finanax collect $5.11 million.
Crazy.
Ronaldo's 101 Kaboom, 1.35 mil, sold this week as well.
We're getting to the seven-figure club with these cards now.
You know, it used to be rare air like one or two.
It's also crazy because, like, he's still like.
He is a freak in all the greatest ways.
Yeah.
But it seems like the hobby's somewhat Teflon.
Singles and slabs are still high demand.
I think it's all about the chase too, like the effort of finding a card that you've wanted for so long.
The competition for these, it's almost gotten beyond the realm of normal or just normalcy.
It's manic.
Welcome to the Collector Nation podcast here on the Collector Nation Network.
Whether you're chasing grails or calling bluffs, you take you inside a hobby.
Here are your hosts.
Ryan Alford and Brian Lut.
What's up guys? Welcome to Collector Nation here on the Collector
Nation Network. Ryan, Brian, and Bella coming to you on a Friday.
Friday. Fri-Yea, what we say in the Alford residence.
It's fray, so.
Yeah. And the first one to say, it gets kind of like the win in the morning.
So it's like the first person to be positive in the day.
It's kind of like the, you get the pal on the back.
It's like a car shot.
It's a cachet.
You know, like, you got it.
Ah, darn it. Who got it?
I used to do a hotcake Friday with my two oldest boys.
We did it literally every Friday of every school day.
They're all the way through fifth grade.
Didn't miss a single one.
Should have been a McDonald's commercial.
They missed out on that.
And I've got all documented.
I got videos.
I got pictures.
So one day, maybe they'll look back.
McDonald's hit us up.
I sell that story.
But that's where it started, Frye.
It's Friday.
It's fray.
Positive stuff.
We need positive stuff in the world.
I know.
I mean,
that was a teed up for them.
But anyway,
how you doing,
Brian?
I'm good,
man.
I'm good.
Busy,
busy, busy.
You know,
the summer,
this time of year,
she's just busy,
like,
personally,
you know,
with graduations and throw my wife's birthday in there
and Father's Day
and Mother's Day,
well,
Mother's Day,
over. But I don't ask for anything for Father's Day. Every day is Mother's Day.
Yeah. Your wife's 35 or 36 now. Yeah. Somewhere around there. I don't ask.
Oh. No. How about you? What do you got going on? A little bit of everything. You know, just
keeping up with all the boys are out of school. So got a lot happening in the hobby.
Got releases happening like crazy. I think we talked about that a little bit last week.
Like, we've got, you know, new teammates, got Lance breaking down stuff, helping us with footage and the set here.
We got Bella rocking it on there and, you know, doing a little bit of everything like she always is.
And it's just that time of year.
And I'm always knee-deep in seven things.
How many people?
That wouldn't have it any other way.
Yeah, he sent me an email at 3 a.m. last night and I woke up this morning and I was like, you got to be.
be kidding me.
That's insane.
Dude, I am
burning it on both ends.
Yes.
But you know,
I find with
I don't know,
four and a half hours
of sleep, I'm good.
I need my like eight hours
of beauty rest.
I can't,
I know that will catch up with me,
but like I think I can,
four and a half, I'm good.
Four struggled three and a half,
not good, but four and a half I've learned is I can operate deep Ryan at four and a half.
But I haven't had six and a half in probably two months.
That's insane.
Have you always had that?
My friends always called me a robot.
Like in college, I kind of had that.
I barely got hung up.
I mean, I get a hangover, but I barely got a hangover.
and like I just can kind of go you know
I was that guy that played golf with no sleep
and you know I don't know
don't you're all those miserable moments sometimes
but I can't like flip the switch
I make myself do anything
I am mind over matter
so if you don't
I don't know if you don't mind it doesn't matter
exactly
I'll tell you what matters
and if you're a New York fan
congratulations headed to the NBA finals
But the first time since 1999,
I hate, you know,
people are trying to sell that maybe they have a shot.
I don't think it's going to matter.
But congratulations to nonetheless.
Well, so this morning,
we came in and Cole was like,
yeah, we don't have any Nix cards.
Like, I'm sure their market has gone crazy high now.
Maybe.
In anticipation, I guess maybe it depends how they continue to do.
But, yeah, we don't have any.
next cards in store.
And then what's the other
Jaylor Brunson is a great player.
Pulled some of his cards last night.
We had a good night.
I said it brought those out.
They're out.
We had a good night of ripping with them.
