You know, we haven't had that many race car episode maybe maybe i don't even think 10 maybe six six to eight somewhere in there but they are always yeah very crazy people yeah i mean right away they're they don't clearly a certain kind clearly yeah they're not you know bodily they're not real uh concerned about bodily safety or anything like that anyone who's like i'll drive 200 miles an hour in a circle. That seems safe. Their athletic ability is lacking in the first place.
Starting point is 00:02:11 Maybe. I mean, they could. Who knows? We don't know that someone driving a car can't dunk, but you just assume. Their 40 time is low. Yeah. Or high. High.
Starting point is 00:02:23 You would assume if they could dunk, they'd be dunking. Starting point is 00:06:06 We are going to get into this with a race car driver, a Dutch race car driver. All right. So, unfortunately, because he's Dutch, and I think I already made- We already burned that one. I've already made fun of and made up stories, so all of this has to be true now because I can't. It's a country we've already talked about, so- He didn't do like shot skis out of a shoe of motor oil.
Starting point is 00:06:28 You know, it would be a clog. You know what I mean? It wouldn't work. There's too many tie-ins. Yeah. Too many tie-ins with the tennis player there, Bernard Below, and it just wouldn't work. We're talking about waffles. It'd be bad.
Starting point is 00:06:41 They were in the Belgian hillside at some point. Two tennis raggats. This is Johannes Franciscus Verstappen. Good God. There we go. Now, would it be Johannes or Johannes? We'll call him Joe. We'll call him.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Well, his name, he goes by J-O-S. Yos? Yos, but his nickname hits Yos. I think it's Yos because his nickname is The Boss. Oh. So it's Yoss The Boss. Okay. Versus Stappen.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Or, as he's called for a while, Verkraschen, which is what he's called on the circuit for a long time. Yoss Verkraschen, which is pretty funny. That's why I love motorsports. People are assholes. I like it. That's good. I love it when people are assholes. I like it. That's good. I love it when people are assholes. I like a good ball breaking.
Starting point is 00:07:30 This guy is a goddamn lunatic. Like we said, to go that fast, you have to have a certain level of disregard for your own safety. You have to have a certain amount of narcissism to think like this is safe obviously i'm doing it so clearly bad things can't happen and this guy has a little bit of extra oh put it that way he's a hair trigger temper on this i like those kind of guys hair trigger temper well i mean it's good in certain aspects but it leaks into people that he definitely shouldn't unleash this on like for sure wives girlfriends oh that's not his dad things like that kind of like that depending on if the age is good strangers yeah this is an episode where he fights with his dad and with his dad
Starting point is 00:08:20 in the same episode you don't i don't know if we've ever had that this might be a first and versus we've never this might be it's like a wrestling storyline first they were they were together and then they had a a rift between them that broke them apart and now it's the biggest feud going they know each other's moves so uh so here we go the boss here for crash and he's born march 4th, 1972. So not an old, not a real old guy. In my mind, I kept reading about this guy and I kept picturing him a lot older. He's only 49 years old. Jesus, today.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Not really. Yeah, today. He's not really that old here. He is born in Montfort, Netherlands. Beautiful. Which is a small, I get my sclerosis. It's gorgeous there. I've seen it. Oh oh we go there every summer
Starting point is 00:09:07 beautiful it looked really it's a small place looks nice i guess there's only 3 000 people there is that right yeah there's like a the ruins of like this big castle oh montfort castle that's uh that looks awesome i love that i mean it's like a really old castle that shit scares me but i do want to explore them i don't to explore everything climb on shit because i'm afraid it'll fall but i want to like bang on stones to see if secret doors i've seen young frankenstein i know how these fucking places work yeah this is what i'm looking for that's right bring alive monsters down there yeah yeah i want to see the dungeon. Show me. Where's the bubbling water? He doesn't say, where do we pour the hot oil as people come up? Because I need an oil tower in my house is what I need.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I don't have a- Bubbling cauldron rigged when you ring the doorbell. Yeah. I need to get a moat going first because you have to direct people at the only place they can come in. Channel them to the death. Got to get a drawbridge. That's a really- This is a lot of work work i don't know if i can yeah i think i can afford this i'm gonna have to talk to a contractor this is a lot i don't think i don't know if i can afford this can we
Starting point is 00:10:13 do this ourselves you think wait for the lumber prices to drop they did they did they it's all over it's all done yeah so let's do it wholesale prices are back to normal before we can do it now i yeah maybe let's do it um me and you let's do it backhoe prices are back to normal. Split it up. We can do it now. Yeah, maybe. Let's do it. Me and you, let's do it. Backhoe prices are down? Can we rent those? When we're done with this, we'll go dig it out.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Start taking the money. Let's do it, yeah. I'll buy pizza. Don't worry about it. Pizza and beer. I'll hand you a shovel and I'll go get the pizza. What do you say? So Verstappen here, he began racing early.
Starting point is 00:10:45 He's always been into racing. Overcrash in here. Started karting at the age of eight. That'll do it. And all these guys start out karting. Yeah. Which these, what exactly explains it? Go-karts, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Yeah, go-karts. I know what I'm looking at. It's a big deal. But you've seen these more. You explain to the listeners what we're talking about. It's the progression of how you get to race actual real cars. You start in go-karts. Then you go into midgets and minis.
Starting point is 00:11:11 And then you're in sprint cars. And it's all dirt track. It depends on if you want to race open wheel like F1 like this guy does. Yeah, he's a European style. That's your go-kart start. There's no stock car racing over there. Yeah, it's all on streets and shit. But it's fascinating because you've got these karts, and it's not necessarily just age.
Starting point is 00:11:31 There are age brackets, of course, too. But you'll have 30-year-old men racing with 17-year-olds, and it's fucking hysterical. Do they race with 12-year-olds? Because I really want to see that. I imagine there's a couple that are good in there. That would be awesome. It's got to be. Buddy Rice is from Phoenix, and he did that shit when we were in high school.
Starting point is 00:11:48 And then he progressed into the Bob Bondurant School, and then he did Open Wheel, too. And he's the youngest, at the time, youngest winner of Indy. But it was also a rain delay, and then they canceled the race. They called it, and he happened to be in first place. So it wasn't really a legitimate win. So it was like a baseball game that was called in the sixth and then started raining. And then he got the World Series.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Hey, we're up 5-3. I guess we win now. That's it. Sweet. That's the game. This is awesome. Fuck, they could have come back. Open wheel racing is fascinating,
Starting point is 00:12:17 but it's not one to watch. It's boring. Yeah, there's no storyline. But that year with buddy rice was cool because it was uh it was when david letterman got into racing so it was a big deal for his team to win and buddy rakes for him so it was kind of a big deal but there are no storylines there that's why this shit's so boring letterman's from indiana so that indianapolis that's a huge deal for them yeah they love andy won that fuck out of here that's a big deal was it yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:12:43 it was it was indy it had to be Indy. I guess. I was thinking Daytona, but Daytona's NASCAR, so it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. That's it. These Indy, these open wheel cars, they sound cool. Oh, boy. They sound like they're geared so tightly. And there's so many gears in them.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Yeah. The gearbox is enormous. It's fucking half the car. It's huge. And they always, as a kid, I just thought a wheel was going to fall off all the time. They don't look well put together. No, it just looks like this giant wheel, this motor with a man sitting on it, essentially, and a steering wheel.
Starting point is 00:13:16 And then an airplane fuselage. And it's held together by like a PVC pipe is just on this wheel. It just doesn't look safe. It looks like it's going to snap off and the car is going to flip over and burst into flames. Rev it up and let go. Let's do it. That's what I'm saying. So eight years old, he's karting.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Yeah. And he was participating in national competitions. Shit is expensive. Oh, yeah. Holy fuck. I can imagine. Yeah. Can you imagine?
Starting point is 00:13:39 That's a hobby. That's not a career at all. There's guys that do it today. They're old enough to be. I mean, they should have a job. They absolutely do. Because I have a friend who loaned money to another friend to buy a tire for his car because he didn't have money.
Starting point is 00:13:53 No. The money's not there. If your eight-year-old wants to do this, you're like, how about video games? Aren't you interested in those? I'll buy you a bunch of video games. It's way cheaper. Get a Twitch streaming and hopefully you can make money off of this. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Rather than costing me out of the gate thousands of dollars. I'm not saying you have to go outside and play or anything drastic like that, but I am saying I'm not going to pay for you to beat the shit out of multiple cars at eight. It's not happening. An $8,000 thing to look at outside of the track, it's useless. Yeah. What happened to just liking like transformers? Can you just get some transformers?
Starting point is 00:14:28 Can you be happy with those? Can you get into girls soon? Soon? Let's start buying cologne rather than that shit. You're not going to be interested in cars anymore because you'll tell a girl what you're into and they'll go, oh, that doesn't sound right. And you'll be like, oh yeah, I mean, I'm not real anyway. Like I do it sometimes.
Starting point is 00:14:43 It's got one seat. I'm sorry. I can't even take you for a ride. Two handjobs later, you're like, I mean, I'm not real anyway. Like, I do it sometimes. It's got one seat. I'm sorry. I can't even take you for a ride. Two handjobs later, you're like, I'm never doing that again. I'll rollerblade for all I care. I'm never driving a car again. So by 1984, he became, at 12, he became the junior Dutch champion of karting. And he beat the other guy.
Starting point is 00:15:04 He beat all the other little blonde kids i'm sure they're possibly big in dutch yeah car junior dutch carding i don't know and that's the other thing too like european wise obviously we're not we don't live in europe i don't know so i don't know the culture they seem to be very much into like street racing and all that sort of thing and i know like in italy they're very into high performance cars obviously and that sort of shit and but like i don't know what the like car culture is there for racing like italy produces unbelievable vehicles that's what i mean there aren't i've never seen a dutch race car i don't know yeah and they don't have like i don't know dude it's weird because they don't have like the same car culture that we have here.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Like people's cars in America, in the States, if you're not from here, are really important to them. Like specific to the you can almost look at a car and know how they vote. Seriously. But that's the weird part. Like it is. It's so different as far as that goes. Like we have people, their whole personalities are based on their car. And like, you know what their coffee order is looking at their car. It's crazy. We have like a driving culture, a cruising culture of, you know, when you're 16 and you get your license and then you can drive this whole thing that we have.
Starting point is 00:16:20 And I'm not sure that in Europe they seem to drive tiny little cars and just not give a shit. So they just drive them because that's gas is expensive and that's what you drive so i don't know if they have the same love of that or if they don't care what they're driving but they enjoy watching yeah racing i don't know if it's that sort of thing i'm not i don't know so i don't know whereas here like stock car racing comes from yeah moonshining right like that's how we got that from it's uh it evolved its own culture now the first nascars were running on on running on moonshine yeah and then they were like well my car can get away from the cops faster i dare you to show me and then
Starting point is 00:16:56 they'd show up fucking race in the dark i don't know like if this was like you needed to ship like illegal dutch tulip shipments from one place to another so they got an open-wheeled car and went as fast as possible i don't know how the fenders off it runs faster yeah that's what i mean i don't know what the culture of that is whereas like i said i know american culture how it progressed so but they seem seems like it's something anyway he uh kept getting more and more successful over his childhood here. Through the late 80s, he wins two junior European titles as well in karting. So he's very much in demand. And then at 19, he makes his transition to car racing, which is very apparently a young age to make the transition.
Starting point is 00:17:42 You have to be a pretty up and coming, pretty, pretty famous up-and-comer to do that. Mature adult. Yeah. Mature, I wouldn't quite put him at. He seems to be a good driver. That seems to be the threshold there. It's like an adult. A 19-year-old is barely an adult.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Oh, yeah. A 19-year-old is a questionable adult. I was 19. i'm trying to think i was not really what i would consider now an adult at 19 some people may be very mature i don't know but i wasn't personally jesus no i was an idiot when i was 19 i think most people are right the the dumb things i mean i did a horrible i made horrible decisions and and I'd already paid for an abortion by the time I was 19. You have your 16-year-old lizard brain, but more freedoms to use it. Your 16-year-old lizard brain is reined in by the limitations set on you by parents,
Starting point is 00:18:38 and then by the time you're 19, it's like, woo! I don't have to fucking go home by nine, and I still want to stick my dick in something. And leave it in there. Woo! That's- Like an asshole. That's 19. And you give this person a fast car, and that seems frightening.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Strap him into the eight-point harness and call it good. Six points? Six points. Fast as you can. We'll meet you as fast as you can. It's good. good no don't even worry about it just go put it in the red the whole time so he uh was i guess in uh early in the early 90s he was the german formula 3 champion i didn't know what f3 is just it's a smaller motor
Starting point is 00:19:21 than the ones it's the same fucking car though Kind of building it up to that. And then he was the Masters of Formula 3 winner in 1993. So he's an up-and-comer. And people are starting to look at him because these teams recruit drivers out of these younger circuits. And so they're looking at people. And he's starting to be recruited as to be a driver on some of these more expensive teams. So he was contacted by a lot of them. as to be a driver on some of these more expensive teams. So he was contacted by a lot of them, and he was, I guess, debuted as a test driver for Benetton.
Starting point is 00:19:57 And then he ended up finally in 93, I guess, having his first races. And in 94, he made his debut in the first race of the season due to an injury to another driver. That's great. So he was like a reserve driver, and they plugged his debut in the first race of the season due to an injury to another driver that's great so he's like a reserve driver and they plugged his ass in there that's how i'm pretty sure that's how buddy rice got his too because somebody else uh got injured probably most people get it that way yeah you know you get your ride based on who's available someone's either gonna retire or be injured i think it's the same as sports it's the same as anything it's i mean wally pip yeah drew breeze yeah somebody got wally breeze no uh tom brady tom with uh with drew that drew bledsoe that's true yeah i'm gonna
Starting point is 00:20:32 get the lou garrig analogy and yeah same thing yeah at least bledsoe went to another team and did well wally pip was like fuck i just have to watch this guy play every day shit forever god damn it he was probably the only guy happy when lou garrett got als yeah he was like good yeah you are lucky motherfucker about as lucky as i am when i fucking uh took a day off and never played again asshole what happened lou did you stand in the waiting room and steal that from somebody else is that what happened watch out lou Don't take a day off. Hey, Lou, look behind you, pal. There's somebody coming.
Starting point is 00:21:11 That's why Lou just stopped. He didn't take time off when he was sick. He just played and then stopped and died. That was it. Just done. He didn't want his shit overtaken. So he ends up doing that. And J.J. Leto, Leto. I don't know who the fuck it is some european guy would imagine a racer that's the guy who was injured and i guess he goes on to have two podium
Starting point is 00:21:34 finishes in 1994 i don't know top three he doesn't win that's i mean it doesn't depends on what their podium is they could be top five yeah either way not a winner but not in the back of the pack so for a guy who's like a rookie on the circuit not bad pretty solid um his first race ended poorly though yeah as he ended up in the midst of a multiple car collision those are fun he's known as a guy he makes he's very aggressive and makes a lot of mistakes resulting in fiery accidents. Does some reckless shit. He's pretty reckless on and off. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:10 On and off. Like a 19-year-old would be. Like a 19-year-old, or even now he's like 22. Early 20s, yeah. And it lasts right up until, how old is he now? Yeah, 49. It's the same. Still a little reckless.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Still going. It's still going, I'm telling you. Like this guy, I've been waiting him out. And then finally it's like, well, I can't wait any longer. I mean, how much longer am I going to wait on this guy? He's not done. He has to make moves. He's just not done.
Starting point is 00:22:36 So he had two third place finishes later on, though. And one in Belgium and another in Hungary. Okay. Now, 1994 is one of the fucking craziest things i've ever seen and i watch a lot of racing so i and i don't imagine this is common no um essentially this is i showed you the pictures oh jesus that yeah that's not common at all in anything in any this it can't be no matter what racing it is, that is not common. I get embracing danger, but not this. This was like a mushroom cloud.
Starting point is 00:23:10 You don't want to embrace this. So it was in Hockenheim. This race was 1994. I guess he pulled into the pit lane in his car there. And the car had been in the pit two laps earlier. The driver before him, because they had earlier okay the driver before him they had switched driver before him and taking it in no problem and then this time he pulls in and there's a bit of a problem um there's a fuel issue yeah uh that causes the entire pit to explode into a
Starting point is 00:23:40 giant monstrous fireball how the fuck did it happen all engulfing insane fireball like fire you can see outlines of fire suits in the picture it was yeah people like people clearly like holding out with their whole bodies their heads are on fire everything is on fire you're like wow that's why they wear those it's fire everywhere shit you Shit. You know somebody's like, it's fucking hot. Never catches on fire. I'm not wearing this goddamn thing. They were like, dude, you got to wear it. Seriously.
Starting point is 00:24:09 I'm so glad I wore this today. It is rough. This was on live television, too. I guess fuel sprayed out of the refueling hose and landed on the hot part of the engine. Oh, that's what ignited it? It got that hot. Yeah, and it followed it back into the the engine. Oh, that's what ignited it? It got that hot. Yeah, and it followed it back into the fuel line. Oh, my.
Starting point is 00:24:28 And a fireball ensued. Holy shit. Yeah, the car had been going for a hundred laps or something. It's hot. So when fuel spray's on it, not good. I didn't know that exhaust pipes could... I think it was engine or something. What on the engine?
Starting point is 00:24:42 I don't have any idea. Maybe the ignition, some spark from there who knows there's an insane picture that's supposed on social media at crime and sports that you're definitely going to need to see that small town murder on instagram here uh we'll talk about the people they have like it broken down by the people involved and their recollections from different angles and it's pretty yeah it's pretty wild this is this is uh for crashing yeah it's our guy the photographer who captured these wild pictures of people like they're coming out of uh you know a vietnamese jungle looks like after it's been napalmed yeah it looks like footage of a backdraft that's exactly what it looks like or
Starting point is 00:25:20 you know bull screaming damn you just those ridiculous you know ridiculous action movie or something blows up you just see a guy come out on fire and then collapse that's what they all look like splashes into water and underwater shot up at the flames going over the top of the water it's dramatic and uh this guy paul cb also him so uh uh recrashing here says i remember coming in for what i thought was a regular pit stop sitting in the car. I would always open my visor because when I stood still, I would sweat a lot. So as I came to a halt, I opened up my helmet to get some fresh air.
Starting point is 00:25:55 He's like, Ooh, Oh boy. That feels good. Um, not quite though. He says, quote, then I saw the fluid coming. Yeah, this is wild this was before i could smell anything and that is why i'm waving my arm in the picture then everything went up in flames and it was suddenly dark and black and i couldn't breathe yeah because you're trapped in a fucking car that's a scary place to be trapped in a fire you can't try to run away from it it was a
Starting point is 00:26:22 situation you don't normally think about it's like you are suddenly put in a dark room and then you think i need to get out yeah you have a panic you panic you're engulfed in flames right who the fuck wouldn't panic oh my god he's got to unbuckle from that yeah who wouldn't panic being strapped in in the middle of a fiery explosion right anybody would hate that well cars are going 300 miles oh god i'm burning oh it hurts it hurts that's my perineum is on that's a terrible way not a good way yeah he said it was a struggle to get the steering wheel off yeah to get out they have to pop that off yep and then it took me a couple of seconds then i had to release
Starting point is 00:27:10 the belts oh boy jesus so there were a lot of things i had to do before i stood up and realized what had happened he just said he saw a flash and then it was dark and then he was panicking trying to get out of there that is scary oh boy that's wild uh paul sebe and he's got his visor open yeah holy fuck fires in his face he got burned and it's everybody will talk about their injuries and everybody's like you know even to this day this part of my skin is still shinier than the rest of it like it's hilarious not hilarious yeah they all survive so it's you know i'm sure they're laughing at it now, but at the time, not funny. So Paul Seby, he says, quote, my job was as right front wheel on.
Starting point is 00:27:54 I guess that's a job. So I had my back to the fuel man. That makes sense. He's doing his thing up there. That's why I ended up getting sprayed up the back. Oh, shit. The fuel sprayed on him and caught him on fire uh it had been a normal race up till then and we were we were going through
Starting point is 00:28:11 joss's pit stop we were just sitting uh we were just getting the wheels on when i saw that i was uh when i saw what i thought was water in the air i thought that's unusual that there's water spraying yeah then i realized it was fuel and at that point i decided to get out of there which is the same point it ignited wow jesus there was a big woof as it went up and i just took flight i headed to the garage which was the most direct route away from the car yeah run for your life every man for himself you just run go but he's covered in flames too because he's got he's on fire there's a picture of him running away come into the building motherfucker go out there in the
Starting point is 00:28:49 grass he's certainly on fire when he's running away from it like you can see him just a man running from the thing one guy panicking in the it's a wild scene so here's steven t he's the photographer he says we were working for benetton at the time, and I decided I would do the race from the infield area. I was going to do the start from there and see what happened, and I wanted to be first on the infield for the finish because I figured that if Michael won, there would be flags everywhere. Shoemaker. He's the other guy in the car. Got it. He's the other guy in the car.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Michael Shoemaker is his teammate? It's him, yeah. Holy shit. It's his teammate. He was the guy who made the pit stop two laps earlier and didn't catch on fire yeah he said the middle of the race turned out to be a bit boring so i thought i would pop back and do some pit stops yeah as it's a five minute walk from trackside maybe that's fun to get some shots of which it is cool yeah it's pretty cool to watch people be able to completely pretty much make a new car in
Starting point is 00:29:44 like 18 seconds that's pretty impressive it's pretty much make a new car in like 18 seconds. That's pretty impressive. It's pretty much. It's wild. So he said, I went into the Benetton garage and they were getting ready for the pit stop. So I shot it from there where I was standing just out the front. I was snapping away and I noticed something, some fuel spilling, but didn't pay too much attention. If you're a photographer, you know, you figure those guys know what they're doing.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Oh, my God. In a NASCAR, they pull the bucket, I guess, what do they call that thing? The fuel holder. Fuel, I don't know. Shit sprays. The fuel canister. They pull that thing out of the back of the car, and that car takes off down the infield, and it's just spilling fuel fucking everywhere.
Starting point is 00:30:21 You don't think. Plus, you're going to be some guy who's not one of the race guys guys not a mechanic and be like there's a fuel there's a liquid you guys gas gas they'd be like shut the fuck up we know what i mean 99 of the time that's a thing that's normal and they'd be like what are you an idiot get out of here photo dude yeah don't you get in the infield you're not allowed to hang out in a garage anymore they'd make fun of you forever after that yeah they just constantly make fun oh fuel guys here oh boy everybody watch out for fuel spraying they'd spray him with water bottles oh what's that yeah that's not race fuel good for you fuel their osha calm down there you go pal so uh he said um then i was went from seeing joss in the car with the mechanics around him
Starting point is 00:31:04 to literally like a big orange ball. Wow. But I kept shooting. What the hell is he going to do? I'm not a fireman. I don't know what to do there. Run into a wall of flames with your camera on? That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:31:16 That's not my job. But you know what is my job? I'm going to keep taking pictures. Click, click. Who's Ansel Adams now, asshole? That's right. Click, click. Oh, that's a pretty, asshole? That's right. Click, click. Oh, that's a pretty decent gig, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:31:27 Right. I don't have to run into that fireball. He said, as soon as it happened, I could see the mechanics running back toward the garage, and some of them were on fire. Yeah. I retreated a bit to get out of the way, and then thought no more of what I had taken as those days were shooting on film. So he just had the film, you know, has to wait till it gets developed.
Starting point is 00:31:47 He doesn't know what the hell he got. Is it Schumacher? Schumacher. Yeah. C-H, right? Schumacher? It's S-C-H. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Yeah. I think it's Schumacher. Yeah. Yeah. S-C-H-U-M-A-C-H-E-R, right? Yeah. It's very German or Austrian or some shit. Did he get hurt too?
Starting point is 00:32:02 No. No. No, he wasn't there. He wasn't driving. He's off the way. He's not a part of the of the pit crew okay he's hanging out waiting to be the driver again okay so the fire was put out quickly but it was still fucking insane i mean that's you don't see that every day and um this apparently they were trying to do shit with the tires half the crew in there and uh the benetton crew had to they were basically losing their shit here
Starting point is 00:32:27 trying to figure out what the hell happened everybody's on fire so uh paul cb said it was all a bit frenzied really there was a lot of shock going on around the garage once the fire was put out there was people trying to take stock and assessing what had happened we found some water and i started splashing it on my face. There were guys clearing up because Joan, who's the operations director, Villa Del Prat, had started shouting into the garage
Starting point is 00:32:52 that there might be another pit stop and he was going around, do you think you can do it? Another pit stop? We just put the fire out. Can we get this done first? Can you change some tires real quick? We said yes, of course.
Starting point is 00:33:04 Wow. We just started putting our overalls back on to go out and do the pit stop for michael holy shit because he's on the team so they have to do those uh they were trying to move joss's car out of the way because it was you know burned there were fire extinguishers everywhere and then we were told as we were getting ready that michael had an engine problem and was going to retire. So don't worry about it. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:33:27 And that was it, really. We went down to the medical center and we had a bit of a laugh trying to cool off our burns. Hilarious. Yeah, these guys aren't. I mean, the kind of guys they would be. My skin on my forearm is sloughing. Isn't that hilarious? You would laugh with a minor burns.
Starting point is 00:33:42 You fucking idiot. Who did that? Hey, dummy. Thanks. Yeah. I was afraid the distributor with gas. Ha ha. There were three of us with burns.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Me, Simon Morley and Wayne Bennett. Myself and Simon had burns to our faces. Simon was worse, but didn't look too bad at the time. So we were just sharing a hose and standing in a bath. Wayne had burned his ankle at the back of his foot. That sounds painful. Yeah, that's not good. It's hard to walk.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Yeah. And was getting last dibs in the shower because it wasn't his face. He's like, I got it. You're good. In the end, he had to stick his foot down the toilet and was flushing it to get enough cold water on his ankle. Gross. That does not seem.
Starting point is 00:34:21 No. That is. I mean, I get that it's, quote, clean water. There's also shit in there. There was poo in there a minute ago. Yeah. There's shit particles in your burned ankle. I don't want that in my blister.
Starting point is 00:34:31 No. Seems like a burn would be a really good place for any sort of. Entrance. Disease to really just have a open season. Walk in. It's like your drawbridge. What a nut. Walking in.
Starting point is 00:34:42 So he said, apart from that, there was no permanent damage. For the next few races, my head was not really particularly in the right place, but you had to get on with it. Yeah. Yeah, you were ready to do a pit stop right after.
Starting point is 00:34:54 The wait is over. So far, you're not losing. The only thing you're losing is my patience. Quickly, I see that. Bing! The queen of the courtroom is back.
Starting point is 00:35:05 I didn't do anything. You wouldn't know the truth if it came up and slapped you in the face. I see he's not intimidated by anything. I can fix that. New cases. She wanted to fight me. Leave her alone. Okay, so, um...
Starting point is 00:35:22 This is not a so. This is a period. Classic Judy. Did you sleep with her? Yes, Your Honor. You married his cousin. His brother. That's not him. Yes, ma'am.
Starting point is 00:35:33 I would make a beeline for the door. The Emmy Award-winning series returns. How did I know that? I have crystal ball in my head. It's an all-new season. It's streaming. You can say anything. Judy Justice only on Freebie. Taylor Swift is soaring high, her every move captured in the news cycle and devoured by her devoted fans. She's broken billboard records and made Grammys history, not to mention becoming a billionaire in the process.
Starting point is 00:36:06 But along the way, Taylor has had to wage war, first by taking on a very powerful, very famous manager, Scooter Braun, and then by going up against the biggest live events company, Ticketmaster. Hi, I'm David Brown, the host of Wondery's show Business Wars. We go deep into some of the biggest corporate rivalries of all time. And in our latest season, Taylor Swift will shake up not only the music business, but Hollywood and the NFL. Follow Business Wars wherever you get your podcasts. You can listen ad-free on the Amazon Music or Wondery app. So there's all sorts of pictures of this.
Starting point is 00:36:47 afterwards so there's all sorts of pictures of this uh once it came out he he went and developed his film yeah and then he was like holy shit i have amazing pictures i have the best photos of fire ever human beings on fire this is so wild and i'll post a bunch of them because they're really looking at it's amazing that anybody survived that you you see it and you go oh what a tragedy oh no how no. How many perished? Like, seriously, it really looks like, wow, this is terrible. I mean, a terrorist attack couldn't have leveled this fucking thing any worse. And then you go, oh, no, wait a second. Everybody survived this?
Starting point is 00:37:17 How is that possible? So Stephen T. said, quote, we dropped the films off. We dropped the films in as usual on the sunday night in london and came in very early to do an edit for motoring news that's a magazine i think something yeah motoring yeah i went through the frames there were two frames that were completely out of focus but you could see the fuel spillage the next frame was an out of focus paul sebe and the next frame was an out of focus paul sebe uh the next frame was an out of focus paul sebe uh by the third but the third frame was the one that had become quite famous which is basically him
Starting point is 00:37:50 completely enveloped in flames yeah pin sharp coming away from it it looks like it should be it's still from a movie that's what it looks like yeah if you went to like blockbuster video in 1997 and you were like i want a bad action movie and he went to just the action section and pulled off some straight to video piece of shit from 1988 it's a still on the back of it yeah there's like a guy tough guy with a gun and like a picture of a girl with her shirt half ripped off yeah and then another picture of a guy running away from a fireball engulfed in flames that's what it looks like it really does so many flames so many flames uh he said there was another angle of the fire that someone had taken from the pit wall and that got used quite
Starting point is 00:38:32 a bit in the newspapers but it didn't have as much of an impact as this one um he says paul and i have joked about it over the years i've given him some big prints and at some point the image ended up on a load of beer mats somewhere it has been used all over the place it's a constant reminder to him well that's great that's what you want that's remember that time we all exploded hey remember your trauma i'm gonna send you huge pictures of it how cool is that and a beer mat what is that like the the beer mat on the i don't know on a bar i was thinking yeah, is that a beer? Yeah. Or is it like a koozie?
Starting point is 00:39:06 Maybe it's like a, I was thinking it was like a coaster. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? Like, that sounds like what they would call it. But why would you want that? It's like the fire. Why would the print of that be on there? Like a mouse pad?
Starting point is 00:39:17 Yeah, that's a drunk's mouse pad. That's what that is. An alcoholic's mouse pad is a beer coaster. This is my good coaster. One with the flames on it. I have Hunter S. Thompson here on my mouse pad that you can see. And if I didn't, I would have that instead. That's what I need.
Starting point is 00:39:36 I needed this guy on fire as my new mouse pad. So anyway, there was an Fia investigation into the cause of the fire focused around a missing filter of some kind okay in the hose yeah and the team always believed that the element did not contribute to what happened that day well it was missing and there was a fire so you're going to get blamed if a part of the fuel delivery system is missing and the fuel delivery system catches everybody on fire, that's probably what they're going to blame for. There's something that regulates the flow of fuel and there's fuel fucking everywhere.
Starting point is 00:40:12 And that piece is missing. It might be that. I'm not an expert, so it might not be that. But there probably is. Like the Challenger had that seal. I don't know if that's what caused it. I don't know if it was frozen, but it was cold. Humidity was too high. I'm going to get blamed for it probably it i'm gonna get blamed so uh old jose here says quote it is what most
Starting point is 00:40:34 people remember me for not quite actually up until the time when he started getting arrested for crazy shit that maybe that's true he said you see the images a lot during the year i have no lasting issues from it apart from sometimes when i drink alcohol mainly wine and it's not all the time just sometimes suddenly i feel it burning oh so if you get him the right vintage yeah if he if it's like a nice merlot he can drink certain things he can do like a like a pinot yeah but he can't do like a merlot or else his face will burn. His face is on fire. Yeah, just as where his face shield was.
Starting point is 00:41:10 I got news for you, sir. You're allergic to wine. Well, then he said, then it also gets red where I got burned on my face. Oh, my God. I feel it coming up on my face. I don't know why. I think it's a sort of reaction you get. Well, what else is it?
Starting point is 00:41:23 I don't know why. I think it's a thing that happens. Yeah, probably, what else is it? I don't know why. I think it's a thing that happens. Yeah, probably. That is all I have left from it, though. He says, that's it. So this guy has no mental scars from anything. No? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:41:35 He doesn't think like that. He doesn't think like that. Rolls off. He just thinks, oh, yeah, fire, and I'm fine. That's how it works. He bursts into flames. You walk away from it, obviously. Time to time, you drink red wine, and then you remember. Yeah, you know, that's how it works right you burst into flames you walk away from it obviously time to time you drink red wine and then you remember yeah you know that's fine but nothing
Starting point is 00:41:48 nothing he's he's a guy that doesn't look into that sort of shit he's a narcissist and he just sees it that way uh paul cb said the only thing i did notice the other week is that my left cheek is slightly redder in a patch but other than that no side effects yeah it's called a scar man yeah you have like a burn that's called a burn scar that's what they usually they do skin grafts for shit like that it's really it's a tough thing it's called skin damage my friend yeah i sure redder yeah burned more rosacea in the burned scar area still burned and when i first saw the photo photograph i had a word with steve t and, you could have been putting me out rather than taking photographs. No.
Starting point is 00:42:27 But then I'm glad I T-took them. Yeah. You want to be taken at that point. There's other people in the garage that's going to cover you with a flame. There should be a fire crew. I would imagine. Somebody with just a blanket, one of those engine blankets that are fireproof. In the event of a fire, I don't want every person to be like, now I'm going to exercise all the training I've had in fire mitigation. No.
Starting point is 00:42:51 Some guy with a camera. You sit still. The guy that does this for his nine to five will handle this. Some dude with a camera panicking and running over to you. He said, when you're in a situation like that, you're just ripping things off, things that have been there on fire. So you don't actually know what happened. So it was really interesting to look and study and see what happened, I guess. That was right in the midst of Stop, Drop, and Roll, too.
Starting point is 00:43:12 So he should have known how to do that shit. He just ran. He did the opposite. He just fed the fuel. He did what most people do, which is go, ah, and run away with your arms waving in the air, causing as much oxygen to get onto the fire as possible. Fanning the flames. That's essentially what you do. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Have you ever choked on something? Yeah. You get up and run away for some reason. I don't know why that is. I've choked. I'm choking here. I'm going to go over there. And you just run away.
Starting point is 00:43:42 You don't even know where you're running. You just run into a wall, bump into it. People are trying to catch you to help you. Excuse me. I'm going to go over there. And you just run away. You don't even know where you're running. You just run into a wall, bump into it. People are trying to catch you to help you. Excuse me. I'm going to choke over there. I don't know what that mechanism in your brain is, but if you catch on fire or choke, this needs to be solved now. Somewhere else. Your evolutionary brain has decided, run away.
Starting point is 00:44:02 That's how this gets solved. Don't know how. This place is on fire i'm running away it's never saved anyone no so you think your brain over time would evolve into think not having that reaction stay around people that can help you with this situation but you go nope run away from everyone that can help and feed the flame feed the flame bigger and also need oxygen more because you're running if you're joking so you're gonna need more that you can't get because you can't breathe so that's perfect die faster is what you're looking to do don't know why we do that he said i do like that photo
Starting point is 00:44:37 and i'm glad he took it because without the video and without that photo it could have easily been forgotten not a lot of people talk about the Jordan fire at the spa in 1995, for example. Apparently, there was another fire without great photojournalism around it. So no one cares. That's somebody running. Yeah. He said, I've had a few posters of the image over the years. And my mother-in-law, who is not with us us anymore i don't know if she left or died but
Starting point is 00:45:05 she's not around she choked and ran that's i mean she she choked on a sunday joint and ran away fell down burst into flames burst into flames and kept running burned up on the spot but she was choking so we think the flames killed her before she choked to death which is it's a better way to go out yeah put her right out. He said, quote, when I first started dating my wife, the only photo she had of me was that picture. Wow. This is my new son-in-law. He's on fire with a helmet on.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Great. Used to be. It is. Sort of. So there on her wall at home was my brother-in-law and sister-in-law at their weddings. And next to it was a picture of me on fire. That made me chuckle. That's pretty good. Supportive of her, anyway. Here's my idiot son-in-law and sister-in-law at their weddings. And next to it was a picture of me on fire. That made me chuckle. That's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:45:47 Supportive of her anyway. Here's my idiot son-in-law. What does he do for a living? That. You want to guess? He's on fire for a living. He is the inspiration for Burning Man, the festival. And I think he's doing pretty well.
Starting point is 00:46:01 That's fucking funny. So apparently for Crash in here, he ends uh he's loaned to another team the next year the sim tech racing team okay i don't know if they just figured he was just kind of uh doomed yeah they're like yeah maybe it's a bad luck charm bad juju i think let's just move him along probably i don't like sim tech give him to him how often do people catch on fire in the pits seriously bro if it's a lot we don't want him doing it he's the guy it never happens i think it's him send him over there he just he's new to the team and he's bursting the flames it's him so they said uh yeah he was it was sim tech and racing for them i guess it was a they said it's a shit team with a shit car got it not good Not good all around, and he didn't score any points.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Really? So I guess it's no podium finishes, I would think that is. Well, it's not finishing in the point point. I think it depends. I don't know where the cutoff for getting points is. Is that a podium finish? There are different ones. Yeah, top 10 oftentimes gets it in NASCAR.
Starting point is 00:47:03 And outside of that, I imagine the points just dwindle until there's zero to be given. Jimmy's going to be our hillbilly tour guide through all of this stuff. Through all of racing? The redneck tour guide. I have no idea about this shit at all. Well, it's not brackets here because there's so many cars involved. So they have to do it in points. And at the end of the year is when the points are tallied up and you get yourself the cup champion i kind of like drag racing that's fun you just line up and go go and then it's
Starting point is 00:47:30 fucking that guy won i saw that's it there's no brackets there i don't know if you have to do you have to worry about points or all of that it's all brackets so it's like double elimination oh it's a tournament i like this way better this is way better that's why nhra is so much fun yeah let's just do drag racing i loved it fast yeah if you put that on tv instead of nascar i feel like this is way better. This is way better. That's why NHRA is so much fun. Yeah, let's just do drag racing. I loved it. Fast. Yeah. If you put that on TV instead of NASCAR, I feel like more people would watch that.
Starting point is 00:47:50 Especially if you had it to where you had a track to where you wouldn't have to watch the people prepare to where a race would fire off, and then 15 seconds later, another race would fire off, and they'd go down, and then they'd be ready back at the first one. If you just had constant drag racing every once in a while, like a feud between the drivers you know that guy's a fucking dick that's why and it's already had that shit it's so great people getting a fist fight in the pits once in a while because those are like super hillbillies the ones in there they're like yeah they don't even need distance they're like we're i think she'll run a quarter mile i mean i it would explode anytime past that you go a half mile it's gonna blow up but i think a quarter mile. I mean, it would explode any time past that.
Starting point is 00:48:25 You go a half mile, it's going to blow up. But I think a quarter mile, it's going to fucking win, buddy. In NASCAR, they're aiming at sex appeal of what these guys look like now. And in NHRA, those are like the ugliest people on earth. There's zero. I mean, there's a couple of women in there now that are pretty fucking attractive. It's shocking that they're that hot driving a car. But the guys are just pigs, bro. it's fantastic it's worse than comedy somehow oh that's they are pieces of shit
Starting point is 00:48:51 they're like 60s wrestlers fat gross ugly men who die in hotel rooms that happens too so yeah this is um that's what i would rather see. Yeah, so much fun. Watching a mess of a man do 300 miles an hour down a track and explode at the finish line. That would be amazing. I could make that probably like a wrestling thing. You could have a storyline. I think I can do it. Like, if you let me produce, if you let me produce drag racing, I think I can make it bigger than NASCAR. I really do.
Starting point is 00:49:21 It shouldn't be so hard. And because the racing is fucking boring it's boring is that part of it though now hear me out is the fact that a nascar race is so long and you don't have to watch the whole thing closely yeah that's kind of nice you can wander around your garage drinking your beer and not give a fuck most of the race is like mid-second period of a basketball game it's like none of this matters we'll check it with the last 15 laps because let's be realistic if you're racing 500 fucking laps a lot of cars don't finish those last 15 are all that really matters that's when actual racing is happening other than that everyone's just trying not to crash and keep pace and all that shit so unless somebody's up by three
Starting point is 00:49:58 four laps yeah really fucking boring is that part of the appeal of it is that you can go there and tailgate and drink beer and fuck around and go look at this james it's a goddamn party they have like concerts and shit you can do all that then you can be like oh they're still going all right what's oh he's all right 15 laps left let's check that out is that part of it where it's gotta be it's like hillbilly lollapalooza just like it's a lazy watch. It's so lazy. That's what I mean. Like Reno nine one one with the junior. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:28 And they're all sitting on the couch. All the brothers passed out sleeping. You see beer in their hand. That's what it is. Is that part? It's gotta be because it's a lazy watch of that. But, but the energy and the energy and efforts that they're putting into that fucking day is crazy.
Starting point is 00:50:43 I imagine the guy's actually racing. These people, no, not just them, the spectators, they prep all week. What the fuck? They're slow roasting and smoking and they're- That's what I'm saying. And then they drink that shit out there in their RV. It's nuts. In a football game, you do that beforehand and then you watch the football game intently.
Starting point is 00:51:00 Whereas this, it's like you come in, you start cooking. I'll die with the pulled pork. We'll see what happens in that race about three four hours we'll see where everybody's at tell that girl the shows are tits because there's tits everywhere out there i would think there's all like they're pulling them out it's it's all day they're pulling them out i mean they're just jumping titties all day line you just get up and you pull them out and you walk away it's crazy it's like tubing in arizona the same crowd it sounds like it's the same crowd same people exact same people okay it's gross okay and so much when there's no race in town
Starting point is 00:51:30 they're going tubing they have like basically yeah they have those speaker tubes where they have like a stereo system had its own tube and shit cut their coleman up and put six by nines in it i made a tube it's just spakers and coolers now the corners have coolers on them we can get out in the middle is just a giant woofer and a spaker and uh there's a car battery in there so don't put your beer in there it's a it's it's it's not it's unsafe i mean there's water we could have a fire at any moment and uh probably burn us all up the flotilla is what i'm telling you if it falls on someone we're gonna have a real tragedy but other than that i think we're gonna have a good time with it and we're gonna see some titties most of all.
Starting point is 00:52:06 Hypothermia and sunburn today. Enjoy it. Perfect. Best of both worlds is what I call it. I call that a full tour. Yeah, the top is red, but the bottom could need some warmth. Full tour. Your genitalia done retreated into your chest cavity,
Starting point is 00:52:22 but that's all right because your face has 14 different areas of pretty questionable skin cancer on it. So it's fine. You're going to feel that when you drink red wine in your 40s. That's right. You won't be able to get an erection for the next three, four weeks because your penis has been completely... It's keeping warm right about your right nipple right now.
Starting point is 00:52:43 It's good. You're going to like it. That's tubing. Yeah. And that's NASCAR. It's the same right about your right nipple right now. It's good. You're going to like it. That's tubing. Yeah. And that's NASCAR. It's the same thing. Yeah. Same people.
Starting point is 00:52:50 He apparently leaves the Benetton team, Joss, with different, his own people here. Yeah. And he sucks after this. From 96 to 2000, he scores no points. Zero. Yeah. That's a lot of driving around for nothing we have the same amount of race points that's like driving to work every day and never getting there i drove for like an hour and a half and the traffic was too much
Starting point is 00:53:17 much and i just turned back like that's what that would be like you never quite accomplish your goal wow that'd be really frustrating imagine driving that many thousands of miles and never accomplishing what you're trying to accomplish that's being a firefighter and the forest just is always on fire it's always yeah you never did you never did your job being one of those people yeah you just keep doing your job the opposite you keep doing it and it just doesn't matter doesn't yeah it just keeps burning if you put out put it out over here it'll start burning over there then. And you're like, well, fuck me. It's all on fire all the time. Why did I show up today?
Starting point is 00:53:47 That's brutal, man. Wow, that's a ballsy job. Yeah. They keep showing up and it keeps never helping. Nothing works. Yeah. I mean, it does eventually. You'll get one under control and another one starts up.
Starting point is 00:54:00 It's whack-a-mole with forest fires. I don't understand that. I don't understand how they actually put that out. Yeah. I don't get that at all. I know there's a ground and air. I don't know how. We put the fire out by starting a fire over here, you see, because that's going to burn
Starting point is 00:54:14 into that one. And I'm like, how do you fucking know that? Fire tracks fire, see? I don't know. Does it? Is that a fire magnet? What's happening? Jimmy, when you click that switch, I don't know why the lights come on.
Starting point is 00:54:24 So I'm not the guy to say, how are you going to put out a giant, complicated forest fire? I don't have a plan. I really don't. I don't know anything. That's the part that baffles me most. I'm a firefighter. Why are you holding a flamethrower? What are you doing?
Starting point is 00:54:37 What are you doing? That doesn't sound like... You know how two negatives make a positive? Well, basically, the more fire you put in, it overwhelms the fire and suffocates itself in on itself. It's like a fire 69 and nobody can breathe. See, that's how it works. Just cocks jammed in the fire mouth. I'm going to face fuck this fire with more fire.
Starting point is 00:55:00 That makes sense to you? I'm trying to break it down into layman's terms, Jimmy. I can't get there. I don't understand the firefighter holding a flame and i know that's someone's gonna someone's gonna tweet at us are you stupid yeah we don't know that's what we're saying we're stupid and we don't understand i'm sure that's how you do it but it just sounds funny it sounds backwards it sounds like there's a flood hold on get. Get the hose. Let's spray it back. We add more water. It'll make it go back. It sounds crazy.
Starting point is 00:55:27 You can move the water easier with water. Yeah. You know what New Orleans needed more of last week? Water. There just wasn't enough. Everyone turn your hoses on. We got to repel the sea. We're repelling the Gulf of Mexico.
Starting point is 00:55:41 Let's go. We need one of those ladder companies with the big fire hose. We can stop this flood. That's the only way we can do it. The only thing that stops water is water. So he's apparently bouncing around to a bunch of different teams. Simtech, Footwork Arrows, Tyrell, Stewart, Minardi, all sorts of different teams. There's a shitload of race teams there's tons
Starting point is 00:56:05 of them and you can just buy one yeah oh yeah if you're as we've seen most of our guys that we've talked about see this guy's actually like a a rarity in crime and sports most of the crime and sports guys are not people into racing they're people who are doing other things and had money and didn't feel like doing those things so they got into racing for the regos the race is a flex yeah this guy is he's a real racer i mean he's just been doing racing forever so it's a different he's like a salt wall they're more than like a fucking uh tucker or one of those guys well tucker just owned the team he wasn't he bought it as a flex too oh he bought it yeah that's the only reason he did it he had all those he had lamborghinis and shit on his own so um may 1998 um this is why he's still i picture him an older guy but he's still only like 26 at this time he's at a race here and um it's a cart it's a carting track
Starting point is 00:57:01 in belgium all right so calm down first of all you're at a carting track in Belgium. All right. So calm down, first of all. You're at a karting track in Belgium. What are you getting so worked up about? This should be a chill day. It's not. Yeah. Why are you so excited? Get out the pulled pork and relax. So instead, he, him and his group got in an argument with another group of people.
Starting point is 00:57:24 Included in the Ver verstappen group is his father franz okay so we have him and his dad and a few other people and apparently these people wanted to use the track and they were the verstappen group was taking too long and so there was an argument about how long you're gonna take what are you doing it's like somebody with like a boat ramp blocking the way what the do you not know how to do it worst fucking people i'll help you watching somebody pack a boat in yeah it's never done it before or uh maybe this is the third time yeah stop it yeah do this on wednesday anytime anytime i've gone on like somebody's boat there's always an issue with somebody on the thing why did i come with you why do you own this this seems like more trouble than it's worth why are we here
Starting point is 00:58:07 yeah so uh basically the the incident escalates sure from a verbal confrontation to a physical confrontation and a bunch of dudes started brawling on the track. Great. Especially Joss and his dad, apparently, were really working this guy over. Oh, boy. To the point where a 45-year-old man is left with a fractured skull at the end of this. Wow. This isn't just a couple of pushes and a punch.
Starting point is 00:58:38 This was, I mean, a fucking melee. Yeah, somebody picked up a weapon. Yeah, at least nobody was set on fire, I guess. But other than that, they get in this huge ruckus over this shit. And it's fucking wild. I don't even know what's going on here, why this happened. And then this was 98. Two years later, they end up having to go to court over the whole thing, obviously.
Starting point is 00:59:03 And what they do over there, there's different rules. Apparently, if you make a financial settlement with the wronged party ahead of the criminal case, it's hugely mitigating. Like, let's say you didn't pay the guy. They'll put you in jail for a couple of years. But if you paid the guy off, you'll just get like six months probation. So you can completely kind of buy yourself out of an taking responsibility for your an assault charge and making a settlement with the other party rather than because it's like well you wronged him i don't know why we're getting the the fucking court system involved if he wants to settle and he's fine with it then what the fuck
Starting point is 00:59:37 do we care you know it's between you two i guess is how they're looking at it which is kind of a good way to look at it it's very mature yeah it's a way of thinking yeah although there you then you can just buy your way out of that yeah that's not good we'd have rich people going around i imagine our whole show would just be uh you know well it was fine though because he paid her off and then this happened well i mean he gave her five hundred thousand dollars and she decided to let it go and nobody'd ever get in trouble called it good ray rice's thing would have worked out like Oh, that would have gone away in a minute. You could just pay people off. Yeah. It would be crazy because the teams would just pay people off.
Starting point is 01:00:08 Just pay them off and then it'll go away. So, yeah, he does all this shit and he ends up, Jesus Christ, the public assistant prosecutor said, Cedric Stoick, he said, we've demanded a tough sentence. Okay. stoic stoic he said we've demanded a tough sentence okay and then the verstappen people they demanded acquittal saying quote there existed no proof that it was verstappen who indeed struck the victim that's just what everybody said so he ends up being found guilty of assault by a belgian court um but he did do an out of settlement uh out of court settlement with the victim and he is given let's see they said quote verstappen was found guilty of fracturing the
Starting point is 01:00:52 victim's skull that's nice it's nice to have on your record under belgian law a defendant who has reached a financial settlement with a victim can receive a lighter sentence. So they ended up telling him, you, sir, may fuck off and gave him five years suspended sentence. And it's essentially probation. He's got to stay out of trouble for the next five years. And then if he doesn't, though, he faces a possible sentence of five years in jail in a Belgian jail, which I assume is just pleasant and smells like waffles. Very, very syrupy. I know it it's probably not but it just sounds like it you look out the window and see just pictures of like snow-capped mountains they're like your waffles are here and you're like oh this is wonderful
Starting point is 01:01:35 thank you thank you so much yeah next time make them crispier yeah there will be large-breasted blonde girl doing masturbation. I tore through cell block, so get ready. Penises out, everyone. Okay. Masturbation. I don't know. That'd be great. We have masturbatory concierge come through for weekly jerk-off.
Starting point is 01:01:58 Okay, everyone get ready for jerk-off. I don't know what accent that is, by the way. I don't know. No idea. I picked a vaguely European accent. I have no clue what I was even doing. I'm sticky from breakfast still. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:13 Is that Sierra? I won't ask. I won't tell. None of my business. And then he walks away. So the prosecutor said they were happy with the guilty verdict, but he said that he wished that the sentence was better, that he would be happier, but he didn't think the sentence was quite good. And then Franz Verstappen, the dad, he also gets five years suspended sentence. Apparently, dad and son, according to the courts, worked this dude over pretty good.
Starting point is 01:02:44 You get five years and the guy's alive. Yeah, you worked this dude over it was pretty good five years and the guy's alive yeah you worked it was a serious he fractured his skull but apparently the court thinks they are the ones who delivered these blows it rained these blows upon him until his skull was fucking fractured so uh apparently in 2001 he had an incident with Juan Pablo Montoya. Yeah. Yeah. Who hasn't? He sounds very handsome. He's stolen a lot of dudes' girlfriends. I feel like in the 90s Antonio Banderas would play him in a movie.
Starting point is 01:03:13 I am Juan Pablo Montoya. Montoyo. I'm here to beat you on the track and then fuck your wife. You killed my father. Prepare to die. I am Juan Pablo Montoyo. You killed my father. Prepare to die. I am one Pablo Montoyo. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Starting point is 01:03:29 That's what's happening there. So apparently Montoyo was the leader and he overtook Verstappen. Yeah. And then Verstappen got pissed off that the guy passed him. You know, they pass each other and get right in front of him. So you can't get around him. So rather than try to get around him, he just started ramming into the guy passed him you know they pass each other and get right in front of him so you can't get around him so rather than try to get around him he just started ramming into the back of him yeah but not even to the point of trying to bump him just fuck you just started bashing into him because he was pissed off that the guy overtook him that's incredible which i don't think
Starting point is 01:03:59 that's legal i don't think that it's probably probably a rule that says you can't yeah you can't uh road rage smash into the back of a guy going 200 miles an hour out of anger. Rubbin's racing. But rear ending is not. Yeah, that's yeah. Rear ending hard. And this publication said poor braking was a common occurrence within Verstappen's career. Poor braking.
Starting point is 01:04:22 Well done. Ramming into people in most races where he was out of the running for points he ultimately scuppered his chances by crashing out is what this article said so when he was done he'd get pissed off and just end up knocking some his goal was well fuck that guy if i can't win neither can that i'll take that guy out of the race crash and you know that's like that's sociopath behavior yeah narcissistic sociopathic and at the same time that explains why he's on like eight different teams in seven years because stop crashing our car it's expensive let's fucking stop doing that what are you doing you asshole
Starting point is 01:04:56 there's not an insurance company that fixes this if you win the race we get money if you win it and you want to go run it into a wall and break it, fine. We want some money to cover it. But if you're not even going to get points, then you break our car on top of it, you're an asshole. We're not in good hands, sir. No, you're a dick. You're not good hands. You're a dick. Right.
Starting point is 01:05:14 So his final performance, his final, I guess they say, like a really good performance was in the year 2000, where he finished fourth at the Monza, at monza yeah and uh yeah 2002 and 2003 he did decently i guess at the canadian grand prix yeah and um yeah so he uh he's had all sorts of problems so through this he's gotten married a bunch of times he's the things he gotten in trouble for like fracturing the guy's skull and shit like those seem to be the tip of the iceberg there's tons of stories i'm going i go around of like him attacking people and being pulled off of people and all this crazy shit like that nothing specific but just stories float around the race world of scuffles he He's known as a hothead and,
Starting point is 01:06:06 you know, stay away from him unless you want him to punch you in the jaw. He's a fucking nut. So that's kind of the way he's doing shit. Yeah. 2001. He ends up, uh,
Starting point is 01:06:17 he's, this is the one Pablo Montoya thing. He's fined 15,000 us dollars for slamming into the guy. Yeah. Um, they said that, um that um montoya not only audaciously overtook ferrari's michael schumacher but went on to give a faultless display in the lead until he passed for stappen's black uh back marking arrows and discovered himself chasing through the grass minus a rear wing he bashed him knocked his car apart and he was in the grass next thing he knew so uh he said for a man whose chance of glory was stolen away montoya was calm cool and calm uh his team apparently were very pissed they demanded an apology from verstappen and um that
Starting point is 01:07:00 was that and he uh but he ended up paying the fine had to pay the fine, but the team had to fix the goddamn car. So the one guy here, Patrick Head, he's described as, quote, the team's furious technical director. Super pissed off. This is a Quebec paper. He said that these guys should hold their hands up if they are at fault, but they don't seem to do that these days. Juan Pablo was in control of the race until he got hit from behind. So that's the kind of dude we're talking about in this whole deal here. Now, he gets married throughout all of this turmoil,
Starting point is 01:07:37 as we know from our rules, perfect timing. But who he marries really seems like a good fit for him. He marries a cart driver, a Belgian cart driver named Sophie Kumpen. Really? Yeah. Which is a Kumpen is a bad last name. Is that what it is? K-U-M-P-E-N. Oh, boy. Yeah. But Sophie over here, I'm sure it's said differently and it's Belgian and it's fine. But in the U.S., that'll get you picked on in the 10th grade it's not gonna work out well there i didn't bring a pen no i don't want that one i don't want a jizz pen they just call her fucking jizz pen and there'd be all sorts of bad
Starting point is 01:08:20 things so but he marries this and her family owned a karting team oh her father owns a karting team so this she's like deep in the racing world so this is actually a good fit for him because she gets it yeah you know she gets all the shit he has to do which makes sense she ends up uh once she marries him and stuff she's done racing karts and then they start having kids and shit like that. He has a son and a daughter. With her. With her, who we'll talk about here.
Starting point is 01:08:49 We'll come back. And she'll come back. We'll come back to come pen in a minute because there's going to be an issue there. If you don't know when Crystal Pepsi was discontinued, what was in Al Capone's vault, or which famous meteorologist is Lenny Kravitz's second cousin, then you haven't spent enough time on Wikipedia. And he is testing. He's set for Jordan Test Drive. i don't even know what jordan that's the team yeah that's the team um the uh jordan i guess he's the guy who owns the team he said i think it's fantastic that this test will offer just some attention in formula one i believe he has a future in formula one, and I hope that this test will be positive and helpful in some way. Uh, it wasn't, I don't think it really based on his career. It doesn't seem
Starting point is 01:10:30 like it was. Um, so he says, we will see at the beginning of June, if everything goes as planned, he said, uh, he'll be driving for the whole day and all this shit. So Verstappen said, I'm happy that I'll be able to drive again. I will also see Eddie Jordan again. And it's been some time since I've had direct contact with him. I'm really curious to see what it's like with the Jordan team and how they'll react to me, what they'll want to tell me. How about don't fucking punch anybody and fracture their skull? Don't run cars off the road. If you lose, just take it on the chin.
Starting point is 01:11:03 Run some sportsmanship. Let's not break your car or anyone else's right so he has a son named max yeah and max is his racing prodigy yeah and his that's what he's gonna make he's gonna mold yeah he's gonna mold now max is very into it great as well but he starts getting into it at age three. He's taking him to races, showing him shit. As soon as he really can figure out how you steer and press a gas pedal, he's in a cart, too. I mean, this kid is like, he's all racing all the time.
Starting point is 01:11:37 It's pretty interesting here. So he would go to the races, like I said, from the time he's a toddler. And his mother is cool with it, too, because his mother goes, too, because she's into cars. You know, it's a race family. Yeah, it's not like mom's at home going, oh, that's silly racing. We can do this other thing. She's like, yeah, you should listen to your dad and race.
Starting point is 01:11:55 It's how it goes. So, yeah, Joss said that Max displayed a specific quality as a 7-year-old. He's nuts with his son by the way in my opinion like he's todd marinovich dad level i wish i knew what that fucking whack job moment was that he exposed his he says it here he quote had something special which is pretty fucking funny here um he uh hold on one second what the hell is this now oh he says quote when he was seven years old i saw he had something special he was always incredibly fast on the first lap on cold tires and when overtaking you can see where someone can overtake how he prepares it max was
Starting point is 01:12:38 always very good at that at seven he noticed that so at seven he could pass other seven-year-olds better i'm cold tires He was just balls here. He's very fast. Or he's dumb and he's just treating the car like it's warmed up. Like it's Mario Kart? Yeah, because that's what it is to him. You can break a car if you're hurrying too fast. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:56 If it's not warmed up, then you can fuck things up. Doesn't give a shit. He's ready to rock and roll. All right. He says that Max's former team boss, because Max will be a racer later on. He said, I think one of the most important facts is the dedication his father, Jost, did. He started karting being five, six years old. He was living on the kart track.
Starting point is 01:13:18 That means he was trained in a very special manner. Talking about Max. Yeah, nobody's brought up like this. Like, they're at the track all day every day when he's a child like he doesn't even give a shit about school that much because all he cares about is racing so he said uh now joss said that he made his son strong and helped him have a feel for the car that's what he's doing he's helping him for christ's sake i'm molding him in my image this is a helpful thing he said. He said that he was hard on his son.
Starting point is 01:13:47 He said this one. Jesus, some of these stories are wild, and we'll talk about them. Quote, I remember when he was probably eight or nine. This is Joss. We went to the go-kart track, and in the wintertime, it was freezing. So I let the van run so that it could warm up. We did 10 laps. He said, ah, cold. so that it could warm up. We did 10 laps. He said, ah, cold.
Starting point is 01:14:07 I said, go warm up. Then three minutes later, I was like, where is he now? Come on, I'm still cold. I said, I don't care, drive. This is an eight-year-old who he's yelling at to drive even though he's cold. He's freezing. He said, quote, he couldn't move his fingers. He's an eight-year-old but i didn't care because i wanted to test things because i was building engines and chassis
Starting point is 01:14:30 this wasn't like this is a character building thing for him and as psychopathic as that would have been at least there would have been like a an ending goal for this the goal would have been to benefit the son he had an engine he wanted to try out and he needed his son to run it for him so he could so he could hear it yeah and see what was going on so he said i don't care if you're cold we'll cut your little fingers off later just run wrap your fingers around that wheel and go and fucking step on it he couldn't move his fingers because but i didn't care because i wanted to test things because i was building engines and chassis i wanted to have a result i wanted to test things because I was building engines and chassis. I wanted to have a result. I wanted to move forward.
Starting point is 01:15:07 Dude. With or without a child? Well, I mean, it depends. If it's too cold for him, he's got to go. I mean, that's what happens. Only the strong survive. It's true. He said that, now Max later on would say, sometimes he would send me out, he would change something on the cart, but he wouldn't tell me
Starting point is 01:15:23 what. And then I had to feel what it was doing. And that's how we would get a good understanding of new he would send me out he would change something on the cart but he wouldn't tell me what and then i had to feel what it was what it was doing and uh that's how we would get a good understanding of new parts coming onto the car so he would change shit and then go what do you think i did to it and then make max figure it out which i guess is a good way to train somebody test yeah you'd have to have a lot of time to do that like every day so he really became a good driver because he he could tell every little feel he could tell what what part made the car run to do that like every day so he really became a good driver because he he could tell every little feel he could tell what what part made the car run to do this or feel that so that's a i guess as on the job training as you can get so um yeah he's he's pretty good max from a young age
Starting point is 01:15:58 one he tells uh he says that he uh max tells one he said after one practice session he was quote driving like a potato he puts it i guess that's a very gordon ramsay and bad way you muppet you drive like a muppet what kind of potato are you potato head and he said i'm driving like a potato i swear and he said quote that he got a thump over his crash helmet by his dad in front of others. His dad fucking punched him in the helmet and told him to get his head out of his ass. And he said, imitating his dad, he said, quote, his dad said, quote, if you don't drive normal, we go home. I'll pack everything up. And he said that Max went on to qualify on the pole and win all of his qualifying races and won the main event on there.
Starting point is 01:16:46 Max said it was a nice wake up call. I needed it. So you're quoting dad's punch in the head for winning? Good for winning. Yeah. So, I mean, this whole thing is a weird legitimize hitting kids. And Max is so young still. I just I really I fear that at some point this is going to like not for he's going to snap, but like mentally it's going to take a toll on him at some point where he goes, geez, I don't think I had a happy childhood at all.
Starting point is 01:17:10 Making me chase excellence every single day. Too much at eight. You know, good. Fuck, man. He said, Joss said, but I knew his driving style and I can see if he's making bad bad choices or driving bad. I could see it immediately. It woke him up because he needed that. Sometimes Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 01:17:29 He describes his son as a very good character. He's a gentle character. When he puts his helmet on, it changes. He's more aggressive because he wants to win. That's normal. That's how you should be. That's on the field. You turn it on, then you get off the field, turn back into a normal person.
Starting point is 01:17:43 This guy's like, I'm a psychopath all the time, Joss. So he said that he was proud of the way he handled his boy, and he tells him another story here. Max qualified at this race fastest and won the pre-final by a few seconds. But in the final, he lost the lead from pole position and on lap two he attempted a really crazy maneuver to get the lead again and it went wrong and i guess he was upset and he stopped and he was in tears yeah young max and joss said quote i was so upset with him now i comforted him i walked away i walked away out of the park and we went to the van and started packing the tent down. He was crying like a baby.
Starting point is 01:18:27 He was really disappointed. He said, Daddy, which he was young enough to call him Daddy still, Daddy, we have to go and pick up the chassis because it's the last race of the day. I replied, No, I'm not going. If you want your chassis, you go get it by yourself. How many people? I'm just going to poll. There's over hundreds of thousands of people listening to the show. yourself how many people i'm just gonna pull yeah pull i mean there's a uh you know over of
Starting point is 01:18:47 hundreds of thousands of people listen to the show show of hands yeah how many people have ever said that to their child if you want your chassis you can fucking go get it because i'm not doing it you'll pick it up you failure loser with your loser chassis he said uh he looked at me and knew i was angry he got somebody else to help him put it in the van he didn't help his son then we left the circuit and he tried to start speaking to me i didn't say a word to him i refused to talk to him even wow he said quote i said don't speak to me i'm really i'll set you on fire. I swear to God. I'm really fed up with it and disappointed with the way you were racing.
Starting point is 01:19:29 Please don't speak. Whoa. That's wild, man. That's too much. That's too. I don't even think Marinovich's dad was like that. I'm really disappointed with the way you're throwing the book and the post out today. So you're done.
Starting point is 01:19:42 I'm going to, yeah, I'm not talking to you. My son didn't swim hard when he was 10 like a couple of races and i was like dude you're i'm here on a saturday we don't have to do this if you don't want to do but i didn't hit him it's hot and i didn't tell him he didn't say don't talk to me don't speak i'm really disappointed with the way you were racing i'm fed up with it but let's get some food and figure out what you want to do because you don't want to do this i get it i don't want to be here either listen it's sat do because you don't want to do this. I get it. I don't want to be here either. Listen, it's Saturday. I really don't want to be here.
Starting point is 01:20:07 It's 111. I was just reading a thing, by the way. Quick sidetrack. I was just reading a thing where they were talking about how in the United States, people who are like 35 to 55 have like the worst mental and physical health of anybody in like, mental and physical health of anybody in like you know first world countries anywhere as far as like depression and fucking and tiredness and all this shit and one of the things they were you know they're trying to figure out what it was and one of the things they said is because they're so fucking tired from trying so hard to set their kids up for success and taking them from one thing to the next
Starting point is 01:20:45 and then waking up and being in a fucking park for an event at 7 a.m. on a Saturday. Like, that's not... You've got to get breakfast burritos to sit here for four hours and then the meet starts. Yeah, parents in the 60s didn't do that. They went, you got a Little League game? Well, you better ride your bike there
Starting point is 01:21:04 because I'm not fucking driving you. I'll be sleeping then. Drop you off and I'm going to fuck back home. I'm going to have about 14 martinis the night before. So definitely don't wake. Make sure you don't wake me up on the way out, all right? And I'll still be healthier than when you're my age. Yeah, which is sad.
Starting point is 01:21:21 We're all going to drop dead. We're just giving ourselves too much stress. It's got to be. We're loading ourselves up. And does this revolve around what our parents didn't do for us and we want to be better parents? They didn't care, which is great. Yeah. It had to be easier to raise me because it was feral.
Starting point is 01:21:37 Just like, I don't know, he's out somewhere. That had to be easier than what I did with my kids, which is constant supervision and taking them places and like helping them and making them fucking taking them to sports and shit is the desire to to not want uh your kid to grow up to think of the way you think about your dad is that that strong i don't know if it's that or you just think like yeah maybe it's like well i mean i didn't have much help and look what happened to me. There's got to be a better way. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:22:07 I don't know what it is. Or it's just pressure from everybody else because you hear everybody. Well, I have to take her to this class and then someone's going to swim and then I have to go to this and then they have their tutor. Oh, no, they still have A's. But I think the tutor, I'm trying to get them advanced for next. Who has time for prep them for next year? Yeah. I'm like next year
Starting point is 01:22:25 look i put braces on that one and this one goes to the doctor i don't know what to tell you we're working on it everyone's alive how would you know when they're 18 how we did everyone's alive i don't know what i don't have time for all this stuff it's a lot man it's a lot being a parent is brutal yeah and they used to just get drunk and tell you to go outside yeah go outside right you know you watch mad men and they're like go outside. Yeah. Go outside. Right. You know, you watch Mad Men, and they're like, go outside. There's a BB gun. Go play with it.
Starting point is 01:22:49 They literally tell the kid. He's like seven. They're like, there's a BB gun. Just go play with the BB gun. Get out of here. Okay. That's what they used to say, though. Yeah. So, not us.
Starting point is 01:22:59 He said that, so he's mad at him. He said, I really wanted to teach him at that point that it should hurt him i wanted to show him that good lord he was also sick from what happened and after a week i started to talk i can't even a week after a week i started to talk to him again that was i was like did he just say i started to talk to him again? And then, yeah, he would build the carts right at home for him that the kid drove. Yeah, he would do it himself. And Max said later, quote, there's nobody harder on me than my dad. No matter what other people say, it's never that hard compared to him.
Starting point is 01:23:39 Just what you want. That's great. There's a time at a gas station when he decided he was going to leave him at a gas station. Leave the kid there? As a child. Yeah. Because he wasn't liking. Teach him a lesson.
Starting point is 01:23:51 We've got to teach him lessons. Walk it home. Walk it off, kid. Max says, quote, my dad sometimes thought I was too relaxed and too easygoing. And Joss said, yeah, he said it was all very easy for him. And he felt that sometimes Max didn't care enough about it. Okay. You know, because children, usually they don't have this hardcore career focus that you'd like them to have.
Starting point is 01:24:13 It's hard. It's hard to do, you know. The hyper focus that he's putting on this for his kid is the problem. Yeah. You picked this career path for me. I didn't pick this. Yeah. Well, yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:24 I guess this is what I'm doing. Mom and dad did this. Grandpa did this. I guess I'm doing it. He doesn't know anything else. He doesn't even know there's an option not to do it. Right. He said one time that Jost just left him at a gas station.
Starting point is 01:24:36 It was after the 2012 CIKFIA KZ2 World Cup. Yeah. Oh, shit. I think you're supposed to pronounce that. I don't think that's an acronym. Kick FIA? No, I'm kidding. There's a dash in it.
Starting point is 01:24:48 I'm kidding. I think it is. You know what? Who knows what country it's in? Maybe. Kick FIA KZ2. There you go. That's what it is.
Starting point is 01:24:55 That's it. Verstappen remembers as one of the easiest, most easiest weekends of my career. I guess it was a burnt clutch and all this type of shit and max apparently he overcame a burn clutch qualifying and then he uh he had a 10th place start and then he earned pole position in the pre-final for the main race but then was wiped out on the second lap after crashing with somebody that he was trying to pass to impatiently. So Max says, it was a bit stupid and unnecessary, so I crashed. No world championship.
Starting point is 01:25:31 It happens. He said, my dad invested so much time already the years before, preparing the engines, making sure that once I stepped up to this category, that everything would be ready to go. So of course I was upset, but my dad was really upset and disappointed in me. He broke down the tent and everything.
Starting point is 01:25:49 He threw it in the van. How many angry tent breakdowns have happened in this kid's life where he's like just silently breaking down a tent with his dad and loading it in the van while it joists seeds? The quiet folding of the... And I'm sure it's not much of a fold i'm sure it's ripping and tearing motherfucker velcro being ripped in dutch yeah slamming an easy up
Starting point is 01:26:14 into the back of a van oh it's so bad he said i had to pick up the cart with a friend of mine on the track after the race because my dad said i had to do it myself we sat in the van on our on our way back home i wanted to talk to my dad about what had happened my opinion about the incident but my dad wouldn't talk to me it's just his thing that he does i kept trying and at one point he stopped at a fuel station and he's like get out i don't want to talk to you anymore. He kicked him out. Get out. I don't want to talk to you. This isn't a bad Tinder date. You can't just stop and be like, never mind.
Starting point is 01:26:51 I'm not fucking you again. Kicked him out at a gas station and then he pulled away. Well, yeah, I guess. Apparently, he just drove away. He dropped him off. Get out. I don't want to talk to you and drove away. Now, apparently, Max's mother was in a separate car a few minutes behind okay so joe said i never intended to abandon him there i knew his mom would be up in a few minutes to pick him up i mean
Starting point is 01:27:16 sure he could have been kidnapped and skinned alive in the meantime but that's all right it's not my problem this is a three minute window you know come on he says max defends his father and he says quote he came back anyway so it's all right no it's not no and i said we drove about 1800 kilometers back home 1800 kilometers is a long way and i didn't say a word to him is what joss said that's that's so far he drove 1800 kilometers with this kid in the car and didn't speak to him the entire time. How uncomfortable is that as a child? That's like two days? That's brutal.
Starting point is 01:27:52 How long does that take? That's a two-day drive, right? That's a two-day drive with will not speak to him. No. He said in the whole week after I didn't speak to him. Jesus. And then we were sitting together and I explained to him how I felt. So this is just what he does.
Starting point is 01:28:08 He just does it all the time. This is the second time. Processing his anger over a week's time. I guess. But the kids, I mean, you got to do it a little faster. Can you do that on the fly, please? You couldn't process your anger over 1,800 kilometers? How much rage do you have that you need a week and a half to talk about this?
Starting point is 01:28:24 A week and a two to talk about a week and a two-day drive people drive to clear their heads you drove for two straight days just that way and it didn't fucking help a drop he said the whole week he didn't feel comfortable with the whole situation but i wanted him to understand that he had to think he didn't feel comfortable being around his father who wouldn't speak to him yeah the season afterwards we won everything we won two european championships and the world championship we won the every race he was so focused that the way he was racing you could see he was thinking and i think that's because of because of what happened at that race it made him a better driver i think it's because i left him in a gas station. I left him with just a need, a deep hole, you might say, inside of him.
Starting point is 01:29:09 Get out of my way. If I don't win, my dad won't talk to me. You don't understand. For like a long time. Until your next birthday, move. Oh, God. Then he says when he's a teenager, when Max is a teenager, Joe says, quote, if he wakes up one morning and doesn't feel like it anymore, that's it.
Starting point is 01:29:27 I would, of course, think it would be a shame, especially with all the energy I put into it. But it remains his choice, his life. If only it is so, I prefer that he tells me now and just not in five years because then I can go on vacation tomorrow. He's like, yeah, don't do it later. Just tell me now and I don't have to do this for the rest of your teenage years make me build cars for nothing so um yeah so finally though um they decided that max was all in this is what they wanted to do so uh joe says for me it was between 80 000 and 100 000 kilometers with the bus every year going from race to race jesus i also prepared the engines was a mechanic and a stay-at-home dad so he's got he's just his whole life is oh that's a dream for so many hillbillies stay at home and build cars for my
Starting point is 01:30:18 kid to race that sounds because he's a real good racer yeah that would be amazing and then you could also go crack some guy's skull with your daddy. Right. That's wild. Crew chief. He really sounds like he's from West Virginia, doesn't he? This is like a very West Virginia story. It's hard to believe it's in Europe.
Starting point is 01:30:35 Some other country. Honestly, it really is. So he said, I prepared all that. That cost me a lot of time and money, and I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't seen talent. Obviously, I would have told him fuck you fuck you kid yeah figure it out so he says that he was tough on his kid but he says that it ultimately crafted max's winning mentality he says i do think it was tough for max we didn't go to the track to chase others to chase the others we went there to win and that's what i taught max i always just want to win win win and that's what i asked him to do that's what they
Starting point is 01:31:10 always say uh it's not about how you play the game it's whether you win win win i believe that's nope just win win win he uh he is always into his whole son and all into that um he when his son joined a team he said i was fully involved also to show. When his son joined a team, he said, I was fully involved. Also, to show Max how to work with a team, he said, the nice thing is we still talk to each other every day Max drives. We call each other and talk about how things went and what's going on. I also tell him my thoughts on it. I'm just telling him he doesn't need to answer, though, but I know he's thinking know he's thinking about it that's the only thing i want i'm just gonna lecture my son every
Starting point is 01:31:49 day don't say anything just listen his son's a really good racer actually too i mean you would imagine he would be he's like a a racing prodigy since birth so yeah makes sense he said max this is his whole thing on you know what this needs in the records. This is such a crazy sports dad thing to say. Just the whole thing that it needs to be put into music in their own words. Quote, Max was my life project. I wanted to win with him, become a champion. We had a goal together. I found the time with Max much more fun than my own career.
Starting point is 01:32:24 Put it this way. I did more Max much more fun than my own career. Put it this way. I did more for Max's career than my own career. Yeah, because you're a self-saboteur. Yeah, you're a self-saboteur, and then you're going to show the world that you can create this little racing pond that can beat everyone. You got something to prove with him. I have a lump of clay, and I'm going to mold it to show the world that you can't keep joss down even with a fireball i'm still the boss i'd rather be richard petty raising kyle petty who was a shit driver oh really he was so bad this one he's the son's better than he ever was so um max ended up being the youngest
Starting point is 01:33:01 ever grand prix winner and also winning three races by the age of 20. So it works, essentially, here. Now, Jost, he's got F1 seasons. Here's his F1 seasons. He's got, what is this, GP. What is GP? Grand Prix? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:33:19 I think it's the different races. I guess it would be the race that it is. So 94, he had 10 races and finished third twice okay that's it that's good he had 10 points total oh yeah yeah three uh third place twice out of 10 out of 10 so you finished 20 of the time podi but never above third never um he had the average one point per race obviously 10 out of 10 394 laps total for the Benetton team. That's the fireball team there. 95, he goes to SimTech.
Starting point is 01:33:50 These are all British ones that he's going to race for for the next few years. He has four races, it looks like. 116 laps, which doesn't seem like enough for four races. Seems like a lot of shit broke down. No first, second, or third finishes whatsoever. No points, nothing. nothing 96 he's with footworks footwork he has 16 races that seems like a good amount of races 480 laps which is the most he's had and he ends up with one point okay i don't know how you pull that off he has no first
Starting point is 01:34:21 second or third place finishes that year next Next one, he's with Tyrell. Just some guy I know named Tyrell. You know, Tyrell's team. Yeah, me and this guy. He's a great cowboy. Giving me a name. He's from a John Wayne movie, I think, Tyrell. Tyrell is a lot different.
Starting point is 01:34:38 Yeah, I've heard that a few places. Just sounds like a guy, though. Yeah. Hi. Yeah. James Tyrell. Nice to meet you. So he races 17 races for 781 laps that year
Starting point is 01:34:49 still seems like it's short for that many races but you know whatever he does finish uh never in first second or third that year though and has zero points for that whole year all that for nothing all has 781 frustrating laps is what that is. A lot of road rage. Single point. Dick. 1998 for Stewart. Jost has nine races, 389 laps, and no points again.
Starting point is 01:35:18 So he's had one point in the last four years. He's a bad racer. This is not good. It doesn't seem good. 2000, though, he has 17 races for races for arrows he's going to race for them for two years and no first second or third finishes but does have uh five points by the end of that year so he comes up with that and then uh the next year he has 889 laps in 2001 lots of laps only one point to show for it i gotta got to figure out the point system for this. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:35:47 It looks like in F1, because in the next year he races for Minardi, which is an Italian firm here, 754 laps, no points. So it looks like in, what is this, eight years of F1 racing, he had a grand total of 17 points. That's amazing. I think I can do that i that doesn't seem like a lot of points i can do i i mean i i can drive a car i yeah i drive fast like an asshole i think that i can do that many that many laps and put up that money drive like 180 miles an hour okay well i mean if it's all in a controlled circumstance like that the amount of points he has the they're just style i think if i took I took your phone away, you could pull it off.
Starting point is 01:36:25 Maybe. If you were on your phone, you couldn't do it. If I'm focused on the drive, I'll bet I could do it. How many? That's not a lot of points. 17 total? In eight years. Wow.
Starting point is 01:36:34 No, it doesn't seem like it. It's crazy you can keep your job and score 17 points over eight years. I think that's why he was on a different team every year. Maybe. And he's crashing into people while he's doing this on purpose and fucking the cars up and everything. But he's still got jobs. He's still had jobs jobs um yeah i looked at this shit and i'm like it's so complicated to look at these formula one results they don't make any fucking sense
Starting point is 01:36:54 whatsoever he drove for hot wheels james he had like some of the biggest uh sponsors he won one race one wow that's crazy over like 10 15 years famous name though uh yeah i see like he finishes like 12th in one race 18th in one race 22nd in another race 16th no finish in a few of them like it's not going well 2008 though he decides that he's going to enter the 24 hours of le mans race that so many of our guys do. Yeah, it's a very popular one. Very popular here. This is for Vermerkensstigen Motorsport. Sounds so dirty.
Starting point is 01:37:33 It does sound. I'm going to give you the old Vermerkenspegen. Wake up, motherfucker. Yeah. You like that. That's what you get when you don't wake up. Yeah, that. Then you catch on fire.
Starting point is 01:37:44 So he's driving a Porscheorsche rs spider yeah those are badass pretty badass he um he ends up starting in 10th and finishing the whole team it's not just him there's like eight guys that drive that you can't just sit one guy in for 24 hours they finish first and win it wow so he's on the winning team. He's a winner. He's a winner for once. Yeah. And no fires, no nothing. 2009, he does it again. This time for the Aston Martin
Starting point is 01:38:13 racing team. Pretty cool. Big one. And they start in 13th position and finish 11th. And I don't know if they finished because they only had 342 laps and there was 354 the year before qualifying they should have just ended it there not many people moved enough yeah good enough that's about right two slots what's the point of running this race year before he
Starting point is 01:38:34 started 10th and finished first that's great but 13th and 11th is probably just ended after qualifying didn't really do much now some point in this whole thing of training the son and racing and doing Le Mans and all this shit, him and his wife got a divorce. Him and Sophie, the cum pen, got divorced. Now, Sophie and he, like I said, they're divorced, which is you really got to knock it along if you have all that in common and still get divorced. Yeah. You know? really gotta knock it along if you have all that in common and still get divorced yeah you know and uh in 2080 has an issue with his ex-wife well his ex-wife is an issue with him i should say because it's really his issue and you can have opinions on people's relationships but this is
Starting point is 01:39:18 definitely him this is definitely him apparently uh he gets arrested for assault and harassment of his ex-wife. Oh, no. Of Sophie. Yeah. He faces eight months in prison after this for all the things he did. Apparently, he was by her. He's near her house, and he says that they had relationship problems, but he didn't believe that he did anything super criminal. His wife disagrees with it, saying that he has been physically threatening her via text message.
Starting point is 01:39:54 Yeah. You know, very threatening things. He physically assaulted her. And also, she saw him slash the tires on her car three different times. Good God. She got new ones. He slashed them again three different times good god he got she got new ones he slashed him again three different times so she's like i feel like this isn't excessive yeah he's hit me yeah threatened my life i have it right here if you'd like to read it and then on top of that uh
Starting point is 01:40:15 keep slashing my tires over and over this sounds like a problem this sounds like uh oh what do you call that stalking is what this sounds likeing. And it's also escalated to violence and then threats of further violence. Now there's sharp instruments at play. Yeah. That you would take seriously. And if you knew this guy, you kind of know when he sinks his teeth into something. Yeah. He goes pretty hard at it here.
Starting point is 01:40:37 Yeah. So he ends up going to court for it and they find him guilty of assault. court for it and they find him guilty of assault uh and then they he's charged also with threatening her in text messages and violating a prior restraining order she had in place against him and then they give her like a new like beefed up restraining order yeah this time jack this one up a smidge yeah uh he is also receives you sir may fuck off a 1,650 euro fine. That's a lot. Yeah, it's a couple grand there, 2,500 bucks. It's about three, four million.
Starting point is 01:41:13 Their euros are like- They're worth a lot. Yeah. They're worth a lot, yeah. And also, you, sir, may fuck off three months in jail suspended. Oh. So no months in jail. Little fine.
Starting point is 01:41:25 No jail at all just a fine for that? Little fine and please don't slash your wife's tires or threaten her life or assault her anymore please and follow the restraining order.
Starting point is 01:41:35 That feels like you should have gotten at least a 30 day. Yeah, have a sit down. Yeah, hey, cool off chief. What are you doing? Remember when you didn't talk to your kid for a week
Starting point is 01:41:43 because he didn't win? Yeah. Maybe you shouldn't talk to her for a while. Let's just it a timeout for now he needs a timeout so total in his career he ended up with 107 race entries somehow 106 starts i don't know if one car broke down between the getting to the pole and taking off for what he had uh zero wins individually zero pole positions these are his f1 stats not you know karting and all that shit two podiums seven point finishes like we said uh 59 retirements which is 55 of the time he didn't finish the race. 17 total points, and he averaged 4.498 laps per race, which is not enough. Dismal race record.
Starting point is 01:42:32 Terrible F1 racing record. Good cart, good and other shit. F1, not his jam, let's just say. Now, another thing that's not his jam is relationships, I'm going to go ahead and say. He finds another woman. He is, at this point, what is was he 40 years old in january 2012 he's turning 40 he's got himself a 24 year old girlfriend oh wow he thinks he's cool i got news for you sir that's not fun he's gonna well uh yeah not fun for her i
Starting point is 01:43:01 would say for how things started to happen uh Because he's going to end up getting arrested. He has to turn himself in to police after fleeing the scene of an incident with his girlfriend. Apparently, they got an argument, obviously. Her name is Kelly VanderWaal. They got an argument, and in the end, he is accused of not only hitting her, but then deliberately hitting her with his car and then trying to repeatedly hit her with his car, leaving her bruised and battered. And essentially the accusation is he tried to run her over. For this, he's not only charged with assault, he's charged with attempted murder. Really?
Starting point is 01:43:43 He's got a car. He tried to run a fucking woman over with a car in anger's charged with attempted murder really he's got a car he tried to run a fucking woman over with a car yeah in anger that's that's attempted murder deadly weapon i i would say yeah um she got pretty fucked up deep bruises and scuffs and all this shit by the way they'll get married later they'll go ahead and get married after this that's sorry baby i forget that's fine oh i forgive you. Oh, man. That bruise just matches your eye. Like, what the fuck is going on?
Starting point is 01:44:10 And we're not making fun of domestic violence. We're making fun of him being like, I'm going to run this fucking person over with my car, and then I'm going to ask her to marry me afterwards. Psychotic jump, too. What a weird thought. That's fucking crazy. So, yeah, he's arrested for all of this. They end up being he's held for two weeks with no bail because of the attempted murder charge.
Starting point is 01:44:33 So eventually, through a deal, he ends up getting the attempted murder charges dropped. And that way he's released from jail and he's to await his trial and all that sort of shit here. So he does miss Max's trip to Italy for the intrepid cart and race fair. You know, I mean, you got to be there. So at this point, I think he was 14, Max. And so that doesn't get to do that. He fuck. He denied these allegations, by the way, saying that he called it, quote, a discussion with her.
Starting point is 01:45:08 That wasn't no temp murder. I mean, a discussion. By the way, he left her after he ran her over. He left her and drove away, leaving her in the parking lot. Expecting, like, did he hit her or something? He fled the scene. Wow. I think he knew he hit her, or at least that's the accusation, allegedly.
Starting point is 01:45:26 They ended up arresting him, like we said, deliberately struck her. She's taken to the hospital by ambulance with heavy bruises and abrasions after being hit by a car. So, like we said, he's arrested. What a fucking mess. She goes to the hospital. He goes to the police station. Man. what a fucking mess she goes to the hospital he goes to the police station man and uh an unnamed woman told who knows them i guess said quote it's definitely not the first time he does this i think now i need to go and hide i don't know what to expect now when he's released so there's a woman fearing for her life apparently saying as a witness saying that this
Starting point is 01:46:03 isn't the first time this has happened and uh jesus i can't believe she tried to she why would she marry him after this well i get it i don't but i mean he tried to run you over then drove away i've seen he drove away man time again he spit gravel on her after he that's wild it's fucking wild. Holy shit. So he also calls her high maintenance, which I mean, come on. High maintenance? She's high maintenance. You try to run her over, man. She's 24, man.
Starting point is 01:46:39 What do you expect? You also hit her with a car. Yeah, right, right. Then she just bop, bop, bop, bop, bop. They won't shut up. You run them over with a car, they'll complain about it forever, bop. They won't shut up. You run them over with a car. They complain about it forever. These women, they don't shut up.
Starting point is 01:46:48 It's like, yeah, they're expensive, man. So what? I hit you with my bumper. I mean, Jesus, relax. So, I mean, this is a fucking mess. He's he's obviously needs like a timeout. I would say he's got he's leaving his kid at gas stations. He's running women over.
Starting point is 01:47:05 He's slashing his ex-wife's tires. He broke a guy's skull with his dad, which is not normal. With his dad, who was, I assume, in his 60s at that time, which is interesting. This is a fucking... People have been set on fire just due to what he's done. It's a fucking disaster. He needs a timeout. And honestly, I would say his kid's coming into his own. fire just due to what he's done it's a fucking disaster he needs a time out yeah and honestly
Starting point is 01:47:25 i would say like his kids becoming coming into his own so he needs to kind of find something else to do with himself i would say honestly what else are you gonna do here you gotta you're not a racer anymore you got your son change you need a career change and he's sitting around thinking about it's like what am i gonna do with myself i mean it's about i should let me make an open a food cart or something you know i like to cook you know those are good those are popular now that's what he's thinking yeah with the whole festival we could do that i mean i have uh we could open up like a chassis shop i'm good at that yeah i could build things and i could people come pick it up by themselves i could yell at other people's children yeah because like look at my. I did a good job yelling at him.
Starting point is 01:48:06 So maybe I could do that. I'm not sure. And then the question is answered for him. Yeah. As there's a knock on the door and it's Vince McMahon, CEO and chairman of WWE. And he says, how is it you've come to arrive here? You beautiful bastard. Look at you.
Starting point is 01:48:36 Oh, my God. I love it. See, most people. This is the thing. Most people aren't willing. They're not willing to take their kids to that next level. I am. This is why I can appreciate this.
Starting point is 01:48:49 I didn't care. I had a teenage daughter. What did I do? I put her tits out and I put her on TV and I said, you go out there and let everyone call you a whore. That's what I did. And that's what everyone did. I said, you let them objectify you. You're my daughter.
Starting point is 01:49:02 That's right. Which means they can objectify you the most out of anyone. Yes, yes. They did. That's what you do. My son, my son, yeah, I made him do things. I made him do so much he left the company for a long time to do other things. This is how you act. You let him out there and
Starting point is 01:49:18 call you a bitch. You call him a little bitch. You say, you little bitch, you get out there and you wrestle or you race. I don't care if you're on fire. You say, look at me, I get out there and you wrestle or you race. I don't care if you're on fire. You say, look at me. I was on fire and I race still. I drink. I can't even drink Merlot anymore.
Starting point is 01:49:31 So, no, this is you're going to come with me, I feel like. Look at the, oh, you know what? Not overalls. A fire suit. A fire suit. Because every match, you're going to come out. You're going to come out on fire. You're going to be a flaming ball of man.
Starting point is 01:49:44 Oh, God. come out you're gonna come out on fire you're gonna be a flaming ball of man oh god and poof in a ball of flames and 10 90s and 10 99s he's gone yeah it's all gone coveralls and overalls vince is gone oh boy and yost is like whoa is that what i look like going to my son holy shit my god i gotta get my shit together this is rough it's intense my god that's too much it's just too much less merlot is it the merlot or was it the fire so 2014 yost takes an f1 car jose or whatever the fuck his name is yeah he takes an f1 car on the highway hell yeah and the pictures of this are hysterical i showed you the picture i just said take a look at this and it's just you know a honda civic and like a fiat and then a fucking f1 car in the middle lane a goddamn race rocket a race rocket here and uh the video was pretty it was like 2014 it was a it was a viral thing i mean police video was that what that
Starting point is 01:50:42 was no it was their video it was like it was just it was a promotional they did it like for some kind of promotion i get i there was something about it that i want to say it was legal um it was legal yes uh one of the photos shows a police officer writing what appears to be a ticket but they think it was all for show so they think it was like a big deal they said from the airport via uststron drove toward the center where the town hall, a smoke screen was deposited by Batavia City. Along came the former F1 driver, the necessary obstacles in the form of traffic and traffic police. That's a quote translated into English. So it's very difficult. Why the fuck did he do it?
Starting point is 01:51:24 Just for a promotion i think it was a promotion of the car or something like that because it got a shitload of play i mean people went nuts over that shit so jesus christ you got to be kidding me here this is the next one that's pretty wild here so they cracked a guy's skull he's left his son in a gas station doesn't seem to care that anybody was on fire um oh that's right he uh slashed his ex-wife's tires threatened her assaulted her ran his girlfriend future wife over with his car after hitting her and then also uh left her there to you know just bleed out bleed out on the on the sidewalk um then july of 2016 he takes it up a notch yeah he takes it up a notch just to another level here uh wow he physically attacked and beat the shit out of his own father where his own father at a shortly after a race so i don't know if they were arguing about the race but he physically beat his fucking dad's ass. In public.
Starting point is 01:52:25 Max, I beat up your grandpa, so race better. He's an old man. Imagine what I'll do to you. He kept saying, oh, my hip. I was like, you pussy. He beat up his dad. And I set him on fire. Happened shortly after the Budapest race there in Montfort in the Netherlands, so it's their hometown, apparently he was beat pretty good enough to where Franz filed a complaint with the police over it.
Starting point is 01:52:54 Holy shit. I mean, it was like he got him pretty good. Jesus Christ. Franz said, quote, we've seen before that Jose has loosed loose hands but this was the limit that's what he said joe is very bad tempered he loves to throw him jose is very bad tempered that's what his father says it's his first reaction to everything is i'll punch the fucking shit out of that is that what he's doing then when he doesn't talk to his kid for a week instead of punching him right it's the same it's like when we were watching Love After Lockup and it's the same instinct as I broke
Starting point is 01:53:29 all of our cabinets so I didn't break your face. That's the same fucking crazy mentality of that. I'll just leave him there and then not talk to him. It's either that or I have to hit him repeatedly. What a turd. I mean, I guess good for him for not beating his son repeatedly, but he seems like the only one. That's bad dad territory is what that is. It doesn't seem like great dad territory.
Starting point is 01:53:50 And I still, and this is just my opinion, obviously, allegedly, I still think he probably smacked his kid around a good amount. If he ran his girlfriend over, he probably smacked his kid. He beat up his own dad. Hitting him on his helmet is not the first time he threw hands at him. hands at him it's like bobby knight that one video of him grabbing the kid by the throat you're like i don't think in 25 years that's the first time or only time or worst time that that's ever happened he did that really well yeah really quickly and didn't seem to bother him and the kid didn't look surprised he backed away from it like oh he's trying to choke me again i gotta get away from this yeah that's how i feel about it anyway so um this is wild raymond vermulin who is max and jose's manager said the incident was quote a private matter which was true until the father the father filed a
Starting point is 01:54:40 police report then it became a very public matter apparently after a few days though franz withdrew the complaint really yeah because they're going to arrest his son yeah so i'm gonna kick my ass again he's yeah he threatened me yeah he had me all lined up with his van i wanted to keep that from happening and he said quote it's just a private matter between myself and jose i want to keep it between ourselves all right which it sounds like a victim of domestic violence would say that. It's just a private matter between us. I just want to keep it between us. Just don't say anything.
Starting point is 01:55:10 Everybody in his life catches his hands, though. They catch his hands, and they, so I mean, he hurts everybody around him no matter what, even if you're driving close to him. Yeah. He's just a ball of temper. It's like, how do I describe him? Yeah. He's just a ball of temper.
Starting point is 01:55:24 It's like, how do I describe him? He's like a stream of fuel that's just ready to burst into flames at any shot out of the fucking pump at any fucking moment. So, yeah, he's at this point. I mean, he's it's embarrassing. People have seen what he's done. Two different women. His dad. All these fucking people. what he's done two different women his dad all these fucking people people are starting to max as a teenager and becoming more popular as a race or becoming better at it and becoming a
Starting point is 01:55:51 bigger prospect and people are like starting to really feel bad for him not they they come up to him and it's not like hey you're that great guy they're like oh how you feeling how you doing you doing great you okay buddy yeah you know sorry about your dad being movements near him yeah sorry about your dad being a dick and max is like i. Yeah. Sorry about your dad being a dick. And Max is like, I'm good. And they're like, yeah, but no. You can't be. You can't be.
Starting point is 01:56:11 I mean, Christ, how do you not feel bad for the kid? Plus, it's been all racing all the time, him and his mom. You feel bad for his mom? Feel bad for his dad? I feel bad for all these people, Jimmy. I really, really do. There's no fucking way but not nearly as bad as you would be so surprised how common of a name joseph verstappen is over there wow so common it's like john williams over there it's wild so first off, not nearly as bad as I feel for Jos Verstappen, senior software designer at ICT in Eindhoven in Netherlands here.
Starting point is 01:56:53 Thermo Fisher Scientific he works for. Looks like he, Fonte's University of Applied Sciences he went to. He's a very important man. He seems smart. Smart man. Smarter than our guy. Probably doesn't beat up people no software designer and implementer specialized in embedded and controlled software okay there's uh embedded and controlled software sounds good to me here um he um as well
Starting point is 01:57:19 as strive for i strive for software that is well-structured, simple, and clear. Terrific. Joseph Verstappen, team leader. This is in another language, but it says team leader. WVB SciTech Services in Stein. I don't know what that is. Joseph Verstappen, manager at Beejjoop in Roermond, which I don't know what that is. Beejjoop.
Starting point is 01:57:50 B-I-J-J-O-O-P. Beejjoop. When said, it sounds like the product of a bee. It's of a bee, exactly. You know, your beejgoop. That's what it sounds like when it's joop. Gross. That's what it sounds like when it's jupe. So, Jos Verstappen, managing partner at BIT IT Consultancy in Antwerp, a metropolitan area there. And finally, Jos Verstappen, student at Holy Trinity High School in Breda, wherever that is.
Starting point is 01:58:21 I assume in the Netherlands. But there's a shitload. Those are the ones that I could understand what they do in their language. I didn't have to use Google Translate for. Those are the ones I picked. That is fascinating. There were so fucking many of them. I had no idea. Yeah, it's such a common name.
Starting point is 01:58:37 Doing this episode, I thought I hit the motherlode jackpot of a crazy story because I did all of it and then i find that there is a kid that was kidnapped and murdered in 1998 named uh named uh nicky verstappen and the kid the guy that ended up 20 years later being caught for it and i think the guy was like a camp counselor and all this shit around kids, basically. This guy's name was Joss something. So when you Googled shit in the newspaper, there's Joss and there's Verstappen in the same article.
Starting point is 01:59:16 So that came up and I'm like, is this his kid? Did he kill a kid? Did he kill his kid? Holy shit. And it turns out there's nothing to do with him. It's just two very common names over there. And that was really... Slammed together. As sad as I was, you know, I was...
Starting point is 01:59:28 Obviously, I don't want any kids to die, but I was... Thought we really had a twist in the story. Fun story. Huge twist. April the 3rd, 2017 comes around here. And this is so fucking dumb for a grown man. He is arrested following a bar brawl. Oh.
Starting point is 01:59:45 A bar fight now. At 45 years old. 45-year-old just bumming a throwdown in a bar. Apparently, yeah, he was arrested after they got in a fight. That wasn't even the part he got arrested for. Yeah. There was a melee. It got broken up.
Starting point is 02:00:01 And apparently, the security in the bar asked everyone involved in the melee to please leave now. You know, because you just fought in the bar. Clear it out. He said, no, I don't want to. So, he fights in a bar and then refuses to leave afterwards. So, you're going to get arrested for that, you dumb shit. He said later on through a spokesman that uh he was arrested but then he was quote set free you know because he was so unjustly held right fucking idiot does he does he have a
Starting point is 02:00:34 job apart from i don't think so this man what the fuck he's sort of involved in max's career he's i want a job james where i'm max's team terrible at it and uh barely do it well and be very well paid to stay at home and then punch everyone you know for the next 20 years at any moment that i'm not happy use your fist your fucking your van as a weapon whatever you got just throw down fuck you dad the dutch have it all figured out. I guess so. So, yeah, they said a policeman was quoted as saying, a man with significant injuries refused. That's him. He had significant injuries.
Starting point is 02:01:14 He got beat up in a bar and then wouldn't leave afterwards, after he threw down. They said that he was the victim of an attack at a beach club, at Beach Club South Concourse in Roermond. They said, quote, he was waiting to be picked up. This is his lawyer. He was waiting to be picked up. If you were a victim, why do you have to leave?
Starting point is 02:01:35 Well, because you were involved. Something tells me he wasn't sitting there having a drink. And some guy said, hey, buddy, you looked at my girlfriend's ass and just punched him in the face. Something tells me he was probably, we don't know, allegedly, but he's probably an active participant. Just based on his track record, if there's fisticuffs and he's in the middle of it, he didn't get surprised with it. He probably started it. Just because he lost doesn't mean he didn't start it. That's the thing.
Starting point is 02:02:00 Just because he found somebody who kicked his ass and he went, oh, I'm 45, not 23 anymore. Oh, yeah, I can't throw like I used to. like i shouldn't and i haven't fought in a while and the last person i fought was my elderly father and then my 24 year old girlfriend before that so i don't have i'm not sharp right now that's whom i was well armed to battle with a car so i'm not exactly in fighting shape at the moment so uh yeah he had injuries to his face and all this type of shit picking women and children and elderly people to fight for the last 20 years forever and now he's elderly and he met his match yeah not elderly but not in tip-top fighting shape 45 he's ask her a fucking evander holyfield how it feels to be 58 and get
Starting point is 02:02:41 punched in the face it's not good it's not good you end up on your ass going damn oh jesus that's sad because i want that i didn't see the fight obviously but just a picture of him sitting on his ass there it's like i wanted that for so long while he hugged and held people in his prime and bit them and then fucking not bit them but head butted them and grinded on their heads and now that i see it as an old man, I'm just like, oh, that's just sad. Poor bastard. He looks like he doesn't know where he is right now. He's almost 60.
Starting point is 02:03:10 Yeah. Jesus. He looks like when they pick him up, they're going to have to go, no, no, this way. Yeah. You know what I mean? He's going to go like somebody at an award show that tries to go off stage in the wrong direction, and they have to play. He's going to be one of those.
Starting point is 02:03:24 I feel like, no, no, this way evander oh i'm sorry uh sir this is why what's that ringing is there a phone is there a phone ringing what's going on shit are we at burger king what's happening we'll have can i have a wafer please is this good sir this is your dressing room oh oh oh my bad he said uh so they said apparently there was an issue with a guy uh jesus christ there was a guy in the whole thing that were was involved in this somebody jumped the line apparently that's what ended up happening it was a beer early i don't know if somebody jumped the line apparently that's what ended up happening it was a beer early i don't know if somebody jumped the line i don't know if it was someone in his group or someone other than his group and then he got mad about it someone a line jumping
Starting point is 02:04:14 was the problem here and it was by the way uh him jose his dad and four friends okay obviously because his dad's going to be there too so they've made up now and they're now beating others again that's good it's nice to see a father and son team it is a wrestling storyline and now they're back together again that's nice so um one man ended up in the hospital uh with this one as well it's a fucking disaster this whole deal now max's reflections now that he's like turning pro he's getting to be a big big shot now his reflections on his dad is quote farah is quote what he did for me is of course unbelievable i can never thank him enough for that of course there are
Starting point is 02:04:56 plenty of fathers to do a lot for their child but that intensively i couldn't possibly mention everything he did most of all because a lot of it's illegal. But besides that, it's also just a long list and you don't have time. Try to fight me for that. He will try to fight me. That's it's dangerous. So May of 2021, Jost was happy with how a weekend went. Max was racing and Max made a podium, I guess, for the first time in Monte Carlo. And apparently ended up with a win there.
Starting point is 02:05:35 And he he's in a race for the world championship in points with another guy. And he has a lead over this guy. So Joe said it was very exciting to see the race. I wasn't present. I was watching on television. He said, we all know how difficult it is to stay out of the walls because there was narrow streets that he was driving on. It wasn't easy for me to watch, especially with that onboard footage. Yeah, you could see now. It's just POV of the drive.
Starting point is 02:05:59 Yeah. It's like that lowest. It's like you're doing Gran Turismo, like a racing game and you're on that first setting where it's just POV and you can't see shit out of anywhere. It will make you so nauseous. It's so fucking frightening. Yeah. There's no peripheral because it's a camera.
Starting point is 02:06:14 So the cameras don't work how your eyes work. You just see this thing in front of you. When you're playing a game, you're like, why doesn't this work when I'm driving? I can play from this angle. Yes, because you have a peripheral vision. You can't do that in a game so um he does say that it's uh he says that now max is leading in the world championship is amazing for me to see him doing this at the moment so good for him another guy said uh what is this about oh about mon. Was this in Monaco that he found race?
Starting point is 02:06:46 Did he just win in Monaco? Monte Carlo. This isn't even the same thing. All right. Never mind. Never fucking mind. I literally was talking about two different races there, or was going to. Now, summer 2001, he's in a feud.
Starting point is 02:06:59 2021? 2021. Jost is in a feud. This is just recently, a couple months ago, with T Wolf. Apparently, I think he's a team owner from what I got here. He said that, oh, the Mercedes team boss. That's what he said. He said he to his son he's pissed off and wolf says quote a father rightly reacts very emotionally to this because his son had a serious accident apparently he thinks that it was caused by this guy's team from their perspective that's very understandable but you have to respect the emotional situation the competition between red bull their drivers and us has always been very intense so he's saying accidents happen motherfucker sorry he said the emotions are running high of course
Starting point is 02:07:50 if we think it if we i think if we had been on the other side we would have looked at the situation in the same way is what this wolf guy says so basically they don't have a leg to stand on even if i was them i would think i was right right that's which is pretty ballsy thing to say that's an interesting thing to say um so yeah they talk about all this shit something that happened with this accident i didn't see the race i just saw the footage of him like driving and then there was like some flashy shit and i don't know what happened so that's generally that's an accident what max saw too yeah that's pretty much what yeah obviously it was point of point of view so september 8th 2021 this is i don't know a week ago so about a week ago so yeah um apparently he is at a race with his it's the dutch grand prix and max is racing and jost is there and Jost has to be transported via
Starting point is 02:08:46 helicopter to the hospital in Roermond following a, this was Max won the race and then his dad had to be taken via helicopter to the hospital. Why didn't they just throw him in the back of the car and let his son go? He's fast. You're on a roll. Go. You're beating everybody today. You'll probably beat the helicopter, too.
Starting point is 02:09:06 Strap him across the back like a deer and just let it go. You're going to beat him. Yeah. Send him. So they said that he suffered from a severe stabbing pain in his abdomen. Yeah. And at the circuit, it was thought the problems were with his gallbladder or kidney. However, it turned out to be inflamed intestines and they gave him an antibiotic and he was fine.
Starting point is 02:09:27 He had to shit and he had some inflammation and they were like, here, take a little of that. They took him to the hospital in a helicopter. Because he had to shit. Because he was a little backed up in the old fucking pants there. Can you imagine that? How dumb you'd feel?
Starting point is 02:09:40 That's horrible. You're like, oh God. Yeah. Oh, they took me in the helicopter. Oh shit. I have an indigestion as a coach. We could have just driven there, really. how dumb you'd feel you're like oh god yeah they didn't oh they took me in the helicopter oh shit like having indigestion as a coach we could have just driven there really not even on the race car we could have just taken my car probably that is rough oh man so can't get enough of jose verstappen well he's only 49 years old so i'm sure he'll beat somebody else up maybe there's
Starting point is 02:10:03 an uncle or a cousin or a grandma i don't know about possibly date a 30 year old pretty soon you never know i mean where's his mom where's she been yeah i mean she's got to be asking for it once in a while right you never know max might have grandkids for him one of these days you can slap them around knock them about a bit maybe run one of them over with your car they'll get some dv coming you never know but it's possible and uh he's gonna be out there so check all of that out keep an eye on joseph for stopping because i was gonna do that episode a couple years ago and then he had like a bar brawl and then he's you know all this other shit so i'm like okay this guy just he's gonna keep doing it yeah he's and you only get as you get older you don't get older only You only are more so. So he's only going to be more so of a fucking lunatic.
Starting point is 02:10:47 Angrier. Angrier, angrier, angrier. So there he is. That's Yos or Jos or whatever the fuck his name is. Johannesburg, whatever the hell. What was his middle name? I don't remember. Doter?
Starting point is 02:11:00 I don't remember what his name is either. I don't fucking know. We'll make one up and who gives a shit. So that's that. If you enjoy that, let us know about it. Get on whatever you're listening to podcasts. Give us five stars. I don't really care.

We don't really want you to, but it really helps the show. For some stupid, dumb shit reason, it helps the show.
