Let's get to it for an old-timey wrestler.
Oh, baby, let's go.
Nanjo Singh is who we're talking about.
Nanjo?
Nanjo?
Nanjo?
Nanjo.
Nanjo Singh, like Indian name sing.
Known as the Hindu with the cobra death lock.
Oh, yeah.
Nanjo.
Now, he's a very old school guy where I have not really, like I'd heard his name, but I haven't really heard.
Even Jim Cornett doesn't talk about this guy.
Like, he loves wrestling history and we'll talk about this guy from 1953 and he was great up in Canada.
I never really even heard him talk about this guy.
So it's definitely a deep cut here.
He's born in Punjab, India, we think.
Now, the year he's born, also very, very difficult to pin down.
Like with most wrestlers, that's kind of a thing, especially the foreign.
guys. They never like to say how old they are.
In Detroit, the chic,
the original chic, before
the Iron Sheak and all that. That guy,
before the Iron Sheak, the original
Sheet. Yeah, yeah. Iron Sheik
was not the Iron Sheik
to like 1981 or something.
He was around, but he wasn't the Iron Sheik.
He had different names.
He'd go by his, he went
by his real name.
Yeah, kind of, sort of, and things
like that. So he, but
then he's the Iron Sheep with the original Sheik was the Detroit guy who ran the Detroit Territory,
had crazy violent matches and like Abdullah the butcher style matches back before Abdullah was doing it.
And he's also Sabu's uncle, crazy ECW wrestler.
He's the guy who trained Sabu and all that shit.
So he, like, retired for a while, then tried to come back.
And in all the newspapers, like his wife was going, I mean, it's tough for him because, you know, he is 47.
and he was really like 68 or some shit,
but they were like putting out the, you know, 47's tough for a guy.
Meanwhile, he was like almost 70.
So wrestlers never, the foreign guys never say how old they are.
Now, later on when something very specific happens where they put his age in the newspaper,
they don't have his correct age because they have him, this is in 1958 and they have him at 41 years old,
which would make him, which would make him in 1970.
which would mean he was already a pro wrestler in America in 1931 when we can find articles on him for the first time.
So that's impossible.
That's not possible.
So he's born more like probably 1910, 1905, something in that range.
Wow.
And then later on the police don't even have his actual age.
So that's pretty interesting.
Oh, I love that.
I love this.
I love crazy old-timey guys where you don't even know.
They were born in a barn.
We don't know when.
He might have been mixed up with his brother.
We don't know.
Yeah, cops don't know.
He's about 5'9, about 220.
So 5.9, not a giant guy.
But back in the 30s, that's a big fucking guy, real big guy, especially a big foreign guy,
which was immediately, oh, bad guy, boo.
You know, that's it.
That was how it worked back then.
You wanted to have a baby face and a heel, and nobody knows either one of them.
The heels, some foreign guy.
He gets booed.
Don't worry about it.
That'll do that.
The browner, the better.
India, great.
They don't know where the fuck that is.
Bring him over here.
They'll hate him.
It's perfect.
So he is believed to have made his way from the west coast across the Midwest and then ending up in Canada where the Canadian territory, he became a star.
Because there's a shitload Indian people in Canada.
Shitloads.
Oh.
Tons of Indian people in Canada.
I know a lot of Indians that are from Canada.
Yeah, a lot of Indian people in Canada.
Just because Canada is part of the British Empire.
the Indians were able to go
everywhere anywhere in the British Empire.
So the earliest
article that can be found here,
June 25th,
1931.
Okay.
From the province newspaper
and the headline
is Ernie Arthur
wins from Hindu
mat man at show in
Nanaimo.
Okay.
Reverting to old style wrestling
Old style. It's 1931. What would old style be?
Greco?
Yeah, actually mount the guy. Like, what are we talking about?
Ernie Arthur, Canadian middleweight champion, slammed Nanjo Singh, reputed champ of India twice last night to win the main bout of a tournament at the Pygmy Pavilion before 300 spectators.
Three hundred.
Nothing that only draws 300.
That's a lot of people.
Yeah, right. Yeah.
Any show that draws 300 people now would be like, God, nobody filmed this.
Oh, my God.
What an embarrassment.
But they were like 300 people showed up.
Yeah.
Don't put this on Instagram.
Yep.
Fucking wrestling was way different back then.
This is not, they didn't have giant, you know, huge ballpark shows and arena shows.
Sure.
It was just the way it was.
Arthur won the first fall.
A lot of them were two out of three back then with a body press.
after one and a half minutes in the third round.
Oh, they're doing round system like the British wrestling.
Yeah.
British wrestling did round systems.
Singh introduced rabbit punches in the fourth,
but Arthur finished him after six minutes and 41 seconds with a scissors and arm hold.
So he's a scissured.
Yeah, they were scissoring hard.
You haven't lived till you've scissored in Indian.
Let me tell you.
Basil Erritt and Wildcat Kellow,
Victoria Wildcat Kellow from Victoria
battled to a draw after four rounds
Rocky Brooks beat Tiger Matthews
with a body slam that shook the building
A body slam that was huge a body slam
That was like oh my God
That's a huge move back then
And Strangler Lewis
Ed Strangler Lewis was one of the legendary
I mean
Top you know it was like Ed Strangler Lewis
Then Lufez then you know what I mean
Like that was the handoff of like
like the greats, basically.
He was also, it was announced,
will appear in the next show.
So that's, he's so good,
even though he's not on here,
they're still talking about him.
They're like, he'll be on the next show.
Exciting.
November 8th, 1932,
Nanjo Singh to meet Al Sparks.
Here we go.
In one half of the double main event
on Friday night's wrestling card
at Pacific Stadium's arena,
Nanjo Singh, Hindu heavyweight,
will meet Al Sparks.
Salt Lake City over the six, 10-minute round route.
The wrestlers have not been secured yet for the other half of the double main.
Ooh, here we go.
November 12th, 1932, Nanjo Singh beat Sparks.
He beat him.
Got him, yeah.
Yeah, Hindu heavyweight wins feature bout on Pacific Stadium's wrestling card.
Oh, man, he beat him.
That's great.
What do you do with him here?
The bout between Singh and Sparks saw the former take the opening fall in the third
round with a body press following a series of elbow butts knocking the hindu down with the flying
scissors in the fourth sparks succeeded in gaining the tying fall falling back on his opponent after he
had secured up flying body scissors sing took the third and winning fall in the fifth very fucking
nice very nice um there is uh an article here um where is this uh where is this guy now um yeah okay
here we go. February 6, 1933.
In spite of a weight disadvantage, Fred Marasi of Chicago got a draw with Nanjo Singh,
a husky Hindu lad.
Ah.
A husky Hindu lad.
That's amazing.
It was a fast semi-wind-up between the two men worth a headline place on any bill.
That's all it says.
Why doesn't hurt so much on his behalf?
Yeah.
June the Husky
June 13th, 1933
There's a picture of him here
And it looks like a pretty thick guy
And he's got like a turban on
Because that means you're Indian back then
You had to wear a turban
So yeah there's a Hindu wrestler
Ray Nanjo Singh meets Ray Lampman
Sacramento in a three fall bout
At East Street arena here tonight
Okay
Nanjo Singh latest Hindu Matt
sensation.
Yeah.
Been so many before him.
Yeah.
Lantman is well known in the capital, but a stranger here.
He is claimed to be good material for Nanjo, who won his first start here last week over
Jim Goodman in Strait Falls.
Now, let's say you go there and, you know, you get a little ill or something like that.
We know someone who can help you.
Who's that?
He's not a Hindu.
He's not a Hindu, but he is a Chinese.
Chinese herb specialist.
Am Tom.
Here he is.
That's a Chinese herb specialist.
Get well by nature remedies, it says.
AM Tom.
PMP?
Yeah, exactly.
Back then, by the way, for some reason, everybody thought, like, if Chinese people did it for
a thousand years, it must mean that it works.
So, grind this up and it'll make your dick hard, basically.
Like, it's so weird.
Yeah. They've done it forever.
So it must work.
That's the best thing to do.
That's it.
So they know they're very wise over there.
See how quiet they are?
Wise.
That's what that is.
Well, this says, to whom it may concern, I was suffering for several months from
copper and lead poison that affected my heart.
Therefore, I went to many doctors without relief.
The condition of my health was weak and critical.
Also, my kidneys were weak and restless.
God.
Restless.
Restless.
They just want to run right out of your asshole and take off down the street.
How would you notice if your kidneys are restless?
When your kidneys are restless, they try to make a run for it every once in a while.
They get real squirrely in there.
You got to watch out.
My friend told me that A.M. Tom is one of the well-known Chinese herb specialists.
I immediately went to him by taking his herbs for a few weeks.
Now, I am completely cured and enjoy life at the age of 54.
Many thanks to AM Tom.
So, I mean, why not?
It says also all kinds of general and female troubles.
So if you got pussy problems, he's the guy to see.
He's got an herb for that.
He's going to stick some dried oregano in your fucking cooch and see if that works.
So June 20 of 1973 here, or 73, 33,
Nanjo Singh, the new Hindu Matt Sensation will wrestle Ed Helens.
Whig stocky Lodi veteran in a 45-minute semi-wind-up, a three-fall contest.
All right, we're out of these stupid rounds now.
That's good.
Nanjo, following in the footsteps of the great Daula, the great Daula, that's another Hindu guy, I guess, has yet to lose about or even a fall here, but he will have a busy evening with Hellwig.
The Lodi performer packs plenty of power and believes that a kick in the jaw is worth two arm locks if a fall is in season.
site. Yeah, there you go.
They said Ray Lantman
was a victim of Singh's strength
in about last week. So
you don't want to fuck with him.
June 27, 1993
here. Ed Hellwig,
the chunky Lodi Grappler.
That's worse than Husky.
Damn it. Fucking newspapers
were so honest back then. It's brutal.
Jesus.
It hurts. Gets another chance to
square things with Nanjo Singh
and spoil the perfect record of the
Hindu in his appearances here.
To date, Nanjo has not lost so much as a single fall on the East Street canvas.
So they were making him like a badass heel.
They were building him up for the champ.
This is all this is.
You get a heel.
And if you get a heel, it's a real formidable guy.
They'll tell you, don't even go off your feet.
Don't even get knocked down.
You are a fucking masher.
You just go through a mash people until you get to the champ.
And then there's, you know, then you'll do something.
bad, get disqualified, then we can have a rematch, and then this will happen, then we get a third
out of it.
So, yeah, so the second Nanjo Hellwig battle has been scheduled as a finish match, which means
that they can wrestle all night or until one or the other has achieved two falls.
So it's a...
All night!
It's a to a finish match.
So they even have...
Oh, my God.
They're starting the stipulations back then.
This would be in a steel cage, a lumberjack match.
And this is their stipulations because the last match was one way.
so now it's going to be like this.
Right.
Yeah, so that's pretty fucking cool, actually,
that they knew the game even back then in the 30s.
They had it.
So the guys, everything.
It's going to be exhausting.
Yeah, for almost 100 years.
The way they do it, it's exactly the same,
how they build feuds and build cards and all that kind of shit.
July 8, 1933,
Nanjo meets tough foe in Tuesday bout.
Bill Thornton, giant heavyweight wrestler,
who once staged a furious duel here with Tiger
Daula has been assigned to the task of halting the winning streak of Nanjo Singh, another Hindu
Matt Marvel.
He's a Matt Marvel.
They will meet in the main event of Tuesday's grappling show at the East Street Arena.
In several starts here, Nanjo has not lost so much as a single fall.
See, they keep doing it.
But Thornton is expected to spoil that record.
The Hindu lacks the tremendous power of his countryman Daula, but has so far,
prove the master of all faux men placed against him here.
Jesus.
So here we go on article July 12, 1933.
Nanjo scores victory when foe hits man.
All right.
With the aid of the elastic ring ropes, that's fun.
They're just starting to do the bouncing off the ropes.
Before that they had like ropes that kind of hung a little loose.
They weren't like the tight ropes to bounce off.
They didn't sling you.
They figured this out, or this is like figuring out how the wrestling business, they're like, it would be really cool if we'd like, you could throw a guy and he'd bounce off and come back, that way you can really do a lot more.
It was pretty amazing, though, when the ropes were just regular-ass rope, when he would slam, like the ropes would move and stuff, like a lot.
They move now, but they don't move like that.
Like, when it's not, when there's no elasticity to them and they're just like, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They look like a, like a, a ring apron almost.
Well, they've been, yeah, back, like in the 70s.
And this is the fucked up part, too.
Like, if you watch old wrestling from like the 70s, early 80s, it goes from big time from venue to venue also.
Because they'll have like their own ring mat.
Sometimes they'll have a ring there set at the, the ones they go to all the time.
And they also have a ring truck they go to.
But a couple of them, they leave them at places.
but they had like in the 70s,
some of the places had like the bigger,
fatter ropes that were kind of,
like you said,
a little droopy.
Even in like WWF,
you'd see that where the guys would bounce off them
but they'd be real loose.
Like if a guy went to the top rope,
it was like he better be on that turnbuckle,
not on the ropes.
Yeah.
I don't think droopy the rope.
They tighten them and tighten them.
W.W.E,
I don't know if they still do now,
but they always used real ropes,
whereas like WCW used steel cables
with rapid.
and rubber. So they had different mounts to them
and shit too.
So Nanjo here with the aid
of electric elastic
ring ropes, Nanjo
advanced a step near the
consecutive victory record of the mighty
tiger doula
here last night when he defeated
Bill Thornton in the main event.
Nanjo won after 21 minutes and
51 seconds of action. Not bad, a
20 minute or there. And he was
not even forced to yield his record
of never having lost a fall here.
Thornton's doom arrived with a thud when he was hurled from the ropes as Nanjo stepped clear, striking his head on the mat.
He was setting Nanjo up for a move.
Nanjo is standing there.
He bounced off the ropes to come at him.
Nanjo moved so he fell and hit himself on the mat.
So that means he's done.
Yeah.
That's one of the rules of wrestling.
If you're like, let's say you're on the top rope and you dive on somebody, if you land directly on them, like kneecaps and ribcages and shit.
they're hurt bad, you're not hurt at all.
But if they move and you hit Matt, you're dead, essentially.
You killed the man at that point.
The floor is lava.
It's lava, because there wasn't, you know, a bunch of bones and shit to hit that would be hurt worse.
It's fucking funny.
One of those weird wrestling laws that we accept.
Like if you throw a man at ropes, he'll bounce off and run back toward you.
It's just one of the things you have to accept when you watch wrestling.
that's one of them there too.
The bout went to Nanjo
without further argument
when Thornton was unable to come out
for the second fall.
Wow. Okay.
Holy shit.
This is a...
Oh my God.
Hurry, hurry.
It's an ad.
The ads, Jimmy, the ads.
Hurry, hurry.
This special offer
expires Saturday, July 15th.
Subscribe to the Appeal Democrat
newspaper, blah, blah, blah.
But the picture is of a guy
who's attempting to raise
his hand, but really looks like he's hiling the newspaper.
Which is bad for the mid-1930s.
You know what I mean?
It's bad publicity, and they just ran with it.
It's bad. It's bad.
August 5, 1933, Nanjo Singh on Matt Card, the undefeated Hindu wrestling star will
return to action here in a main event with Red Odell, Salt Lake Heavyweight, who's picked
to give the East Indian his toughest opposition.
Odell weighs 215 pounds, five more than Nanjo.
has plenty of power to back up his weight.
Then, August 30th, 1933,
Nanjo beaten for first time in wild bout.
Oh, damn it.
Damn it.
Nick Velcroft, veteran wrestler,
went home last night laden with coin
of the realm and a hero wreath.
Okay.
The old campaigner staged one of the toughest bouts
of his long career at the East Street Arena
when he undertook to halt the sizable winning streak of Nanjo Singh,
and what is more, he succeeded.
Oh, boy.
Technically, Nanjo was disqualified for refusing to stay in the ring
and faced a jarring forearm punches illegal wrestling tactic
that Velcroft was landing with deadly effect.
Actually, Nanjo defaulted, quit because the going had become too tough
for the first time since he launched a successful wrestling career.
They even pulled that move back then, where the heel would fucking be,
and they just leave and get disqualified.
That's how you get a steel cage or a lumberjack match going.
that's you have to have a reason he leaves yeah well if you have a lumberjack match 15 guys around the ring to throw him back in now we can't leave now if he leaves they throw him back in now you can't leave if you got a steel cage now you now you're now this guy can cut a promo going this time you can't run because you're trapped in the cage with me and blah blah blah they're figuring it out it's fucking great oh boy in about five minutes nanzjo sought the safety zone outside the ropes just 18 times so he was
overdue for disqualification.
He just kept getting out.
Further than that, he was guilty of illegal kneeing and biting.
His tactics, however, were fruitless.
See, he was doing heel shit.
And then the guy, it's the other thing.
And then this guy was doing the shine shit, which is baby face shine.
Babyface shows that he can out-wrestle you.
You come in doing your shit.
He, you know, slips behind you, puts you in an arm lock and does this shit because he's a better wrestler than you.
But then this guy will bite and do shit to gain the advantage.
and then the heat segment begins.
That's how it works.
So Velcroft was spurred on by the support of every member of the white race and the bumper crowd of fans.
Oh, boy.
And by a $25 purse put up by sportsmen for the first Matt man to defeat the Hindu, which they then split, guaranteed, if that was a real thing.
If someone said, if you beat him, I'll give you $25.
He went and gave fucking Nanjo 1250.
That's the way it should work.
At times, the battle presented the genuine aspects of an old bare fist fight.
When his store of wrestling knowledge had failed him,
Nanjo began to trade blows with Velcroft, but his fate was already sealed.
He was weakened badly by several falls from the ring.
Velcroft hurling him through the ropes repeatedly,
twice causing him to crash to the floor beneath the ring.
Throwing him outside, dumping him out on the concrete there.
Velkov scored the initial fall in 10 minutes with slams,
but lost the second and quick time of 26 seconds
when Nanjo pinned him with a series of flying mares,
and the final bitter round required 17 minutes and 33 seconds.
Two quick rounds, and they had this third round.
The rubber match is long.
Standing outside the ropes,
Nanjo made no dissent when Batario raised Velkoff's arm.
He was satisfied to have done with an ordeal of punishment.
In other unrelated news, as we like to do on this show, Bonfire used for human torch death.
What?
That's the headline from Fresno, August 30th of 1933.
Human torch death?
Like, there's a lot of words in there.
They put that shit up like some sort of social media post to try to have all the buzzwords they can in there.
Get everybody clicking.
Yeah, for tagging.
and for, you know, what's it called?
The SEO type shit.
Francisco Valardi, 50, was dead today after attempting to create,
to cremate himself in a bonfire in his backyard.
There's the human torch part.
Yeah, Valardi soaked his clothes with kerosene and jumped into the fire, police reported.
He suffered burns, which caused his death shortly after.
I guess so, yeah, he was a human flame.
Wow.
That is crazy.
do that, it happens
incredibly fast.
Like, you'd think that it would take a
while for that to happen to, like, actually
die from that. It doesn't take
that long. Fuck no. It's awful.
But you don't go away. Like, people think
that's the other part. Yeah. People think
you just burn away real
real, you don't burn fast. You just open
and all your blood comes out. Yeah, you're just
all burned up and then they're going to have to
actually cremate you in a real fire.
Now. Yeah. It's not like
going to really have to burn you. In a really hot one.
September 6.33, Matt Duel cut short, Nanjo Cox get draw.
Nanjo and Cox.
Fans who crowded East Street Arena almost to capacity last night got more than their money's worth when the grunt and groaners began setting endurance records with the result that the show was carried right up to the midnight deadline and the ferocious duel of Ted Cox and Nanjo Singh halted abruptly after each had scored one fall.
It was the first time since the wrestling was inaugurated here that a card required so much.
time for actual wrestling and the state boxing commission's rule that says wrestlers must
quit on the stroke of 12 was new to many of the customers. Curfew. That's the other thing.
They invented the fucking curfew draw. That was what they used to. They did that so often back in
the day at Madison Square Garden. They'd have the curfew, curfew short time, curfew draw,
and then they'd come back the next time. Yeah. Can't beat it. Rematch looms. The draw finish of the
main event was well enough received and doubtlessly paves the way for a popular rematch.
Say, that's all.
Cox, the bulky bulldog and most suspended grappler in California, gave Nanjo a bad session
for the first round, winning the number one fall in 28 minutes, 53 seconds with a body slam.
That was his finisher.
A body slam is the finisher back then, too.
A 30-minute round, or 30-minute wrestling match.
30-minute first fall.
And in a body slam.
Yeah.
All of that and then a body slam.
Oh, and that was the big move.
Wow.
Nanjo withstood the punishment better than a week ago when he lost to Nick Velcro
and came back to square the match in three minutes, 21 seconds, with a series of three flying mares.
The midnight bell cut the final round and forced the draw decision by referee, Fred Botaro,
who was one individual to welcome the curfew.
He kept plenty busy tearing loose strangleholds and trying to prevent other words.
rule infractions outside the everything goes agreement made by the performers.
This is a fucking no holds bard too.
Wow.
They're doing a no holds bard heel versus heel match because remember they were saying the other
guy's real dirty.
They figured out heel versus heel no holds barred.
People just want to see the spectacle.
They just want to see these two tear each other apart.
So probably not a lot of heel versus heel no holds barred's matches back then.
That was probably pretty new.
The second draw verdict was scored up in the high class.
semi-wind-up struggle of Gorilla Pogel and Don Hill, each getting a fall before the one-hour
time limit.
Okay, November 27, 1933, winner-take-all is Hefner's plan.
There is a possibility that the loser of the Hefner-Nanjo Singh main go at the forum will not
receive a single cent for his services.
Now, that's the thing.
A winner-take-all-the- purse match.
They're doing now.
Oh, got it.
Yeah.
These are just, they're figuring out stipulations that wrestling is.
That's all they do now.
To make it really fun.
Yeah.
Stipulation.
Yeah.
At least that's a suggestion offered by Hefner, which may or may not be approved by Singh,
oh, by Bacenta Singh, manager interpreter of the Hindu with offices in New York City.
They even gave him a fucking Indian manager, one that speaks English and can speak for him.
They figured that out.
They figured out the foreign heel needs a mouthpiece.
back that this has
got to be the beginning of
managers and managers that would do
that like you know this is wow
this is fucking awesome
50% of the gross gate receipts
was offered to bring Hefner and Nanjo
together each participant to receive
one half of this amount which is
hoarse shit there was not
a promoter given 50%
of the gate to two guys at the main event
the champ in the NWA the champ
got 10% of the gate that's the way
that fucking worked back in the day
like Rick Flair going around as NWA champ,
10% of the gate is what they got.
That's a great dayday.
10% of the gross ain't bad if you're drawn.
That's pretty good.
So that's what this is here.
The Wichita Athletic Club is willing,
provided, of course, this plan meets the approval of Nanjo's manager.
The Nanjo Singh-Hefner bout is creating more than its usual amount of interest.
The fact that Nanjo Singh has had things far too easy during his brief tour of this country
is the reason his match with Hefner
will be watched more than the ordinary amount
with more than the ordinary amount of enthusiasm.
They built him up, him beating a bunch of people,
and now you're facing it's fucking great.
They're really working it.
Well, I know you have these problems, Jimmy.
So children's coughs need creomulsion.
Jimmy, do you know that?
Everybody, do you know that your kids' coughs need creomulsion?
What's worse than being in public?
in a store or something, and then you hear that wet child cough.
Oh, God.
It's so gross.
You're like, I already got it.
Already got it.
He'd fuck me.
Great.
Now I've got the flu.
Perfect.
This is always get the best, fastest, and surest treatments for your child's cold or cough.
Prudent mothers, more and more are turning to creomulsion for any cough or cold that starts.
Creomulsion emulsifies creosote.
Crayasote with six other important medicinal elements which soothe and heal the inflamed membranes.
It is not a cheap remedy but contains no narcotics and a certain relief.
Get a bottle from your druggist right now and have it ready for your instant use.
Give your baby this untested product.
Just give it to them.
Here's something called mulchified?
What is it?
Creomulsion.
Cromulsion.
Mulsion.
Mulsion. Something's wrong in there.
December 3 10th, 1933,
Marshall is put on spot against Hindu wrestler.
Local club takes advantage of blank cause in contract to secure Marshall.
Fight looms on it.
That's the headlines.
Before Nanjo Singh, Hindu-Ressling Demon leaves for India the latter part of this month.
He's slated to be tested out by one of the three ranking heavyweights of the NBA.
NBA, which is a predecessor to the NWA.
The NWA didn't start to like 48 or 49 or some shit.
What about this?
There was a few, they tried to have little organizations like that up until that.
The NWA was the first one that really, really stuck hard and worked.
So they said, Everett Marshall is one of the most important matches ever held, ever held.
ever held in this site.
The match, if staged,
will take place
at the forum December 19th
because none of the leading Americans
would wrestle him here.
The appearance of Nanjo Singh
has been called off here
and the Hindu and his wrestling manager
were off for San Francisco.
Oh.
He's too dangerous.
No one will even fight him here.
He's got to go over here.
It's fucking hilarious.
So badass.
I love it.
Consequently,
Marshall, who was signed
to meet Dr. Carl Sarpolis,
who is a very famous guy.
I've heard his name from all the old guys talking about really old, you know, wrestlers
and the main event on the upcoming card.
Following Nanjo Singh's victory over Hefner here recently,
Marshall, while in Wichita, stated he would welcome the chance to test out the Hindu,
but the match was out of the question due to the fact that his manager, Billy Sandow,
would not allow him to take the chance.
Can't fight that guy.
He's too crazy.
It's too crazy.
Marshall, however, agreed to take on the Cleveland physician and stated he would send his contract the next day from Kansas City en route to Chicago.
He says he's going to do it.
In other unrelated news, here we go.
Interrupted suicide gets four years in Penn.
Oh, shit, what?
This is fucked up, dude.
God damn it, laws are weird.
Kansas City, December 9th, Lloyd J. Fogelman, 39, former Kansas City businessman,
whom detectives arrested Thursday night as he was writing a suicide note in his hotel room today
was sentenced to four years in prison on his plea of guilty to forgery charges.
That's why they caught him before he could kill himself.
They didn't catch him before killing himself.
Yeah, it's not necessarily the suicide.
It's that forgery bit.
Yeah, he didn't want to do that.
He was going to off himself over four years.
That's crazy.
What a pussy.
Jesus Christ.
Yeah.
What are you going to do to do?
Get the fuck out of here.
What's wrong with you?
Do your time.
Good Lord.
This guy would have made a terrible mafioso.
Jesus, man.
You can't just kill yourself over four years.
Four years.
Fogelman.
Bosses did more time than that.
Gee, everybody did.
Yeah, that was four years.
I got to do that standing on my head.
No problem.
Think I give a shit about that.
There were guys on tanks walking into courts.
saying, I'll do 35 and I'll get out.
Sir, you are 88 years old.
That's all right. I'll pull it off.
I'll do it. I'll do it.
Fogelman was writing a letter to his wife, Mrs. Irene Fogelman of Newcastle, Indiana, in which he stated he planned to kill himself with a razor when officers stepped in.
He was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and with forging his wife's name on a motor car mortgage on a car loan.
Interesting.
Car loan.
Car loan.
Yeah.
Give pork to needy.
That's a headline.
Okay.
Yeah.
60,000 pounds of government meat to be distributed this week.
You have to understand, this is the Great Depression.
This is those old pictures of the soup lines that go around the block.
That's this time.
That's a gross two words together.
Government meat?
Government cheese, sure.
That's gross.
Government meat.
That's bottom rung beef or pork, really.
Oh, yeah, this pork will be given away at the forum Monday starting at 8 a.m.
All persons working on the CWA, which was like the works thing where they'd have you go, you know, fix up a highway or something.
And those on county relief are eligible to draw pork.
So drop to drop pork.
That's, I can't.
So in somebody's book somewhere, James, somebody's memoir says, for three,
Three years we drew pork.
We drew pork.
The pork will be given away on the same basis as it was used for the first dispensing.
Lots will be from two to ten pounds according to the size of the family.
Wow.
How many kids you got?
All right.
You get this much pork.
All right.
Here's ten pounds of pork.
Wow.
December 16, 1933.
Hindu is fined for wrestling, rasslin row.
Actually.
Rassel.
Rassel.
with an R. This is Kansas
City. Nanjo Singh was
fined $100 in police
court today on a charge of disturbing
the peace as the aftermath
of a wrestling match last night with the
hooded wrestler known as the Red Devil.
They had a fucking riot. This is an old
timey wrestling fucking riot. This happens
in the south this happened for
years and years. It happened all the time in Louisiana
in the 80s and shit. Awesome.
In the midst of the match, both
men rolled from the ring and Nanjo Singh
enraged in a fight or engaged
in a fight old newspaper, sorry.
Police reported with spectators.
Pending appeal, Singh was being held in jail.
Somebody probably pushed him or said something,
and he fucking took a shot at somebody.
He fought everybody.
Hindu is loose after jail stay.
Casey Judge warns Nanjo after wild match.
Bout here is not disturbed.
Despite the fact that Nanjo Singh spent 15 hours in jail on Friday
for creating a mob disturbance in the wrestling match at Kansas City,
that's awesome, dude.
He started a riot.
This guy's a fucking great heel.
He's a great heel.
If you get a riot going, you're great heel, period.
That's it.
That's how you can tell.
That's great.
So that's awesome.
At least this is the word brought back.
I guess he's going to fight Everett Marshall.
To Wichita, Stouffer was in Topeka conferencing with Frank Galee, the State Athletic
Commissioner, about the coming bout between Marshall and the Hindu when he learned.
learned that Nanjo was lodged in jail in Kansas City for creating a mob scene the previous night.
He hurriedly went to Kansas City.
When Nanjo appeared for trial, according to Stouffer, he showed plenty of marks from the infuriated fans.
They started taking shots at him.
He defended himself.
Yeah.
The judge agreed to pardon him with the promise that he would leave the city and never wrestling Kansas City again.
He was also fined 100 bucks.
Kansas City was a big territory forever up until, you know, 83.
You're 81, too.
According to reports of the match,
Nanjo did everything to the Red Devil but kill him before the police took him to the police station.
He knocked out no less than a half a dozen spectators who surged into the ring.
That's real.
All the other shit's bullshit.
Knocked out six people.
Yeah.
Think about it.
Dude, these guys back then, wrestlers now, they're tough or whatever they do their moves and all that shit.
But they're not tough guys.
They're tough guys because they wrestle.
but they're not.
These guys back then were fucking tough guys.
Street hoods.
Yeah.
Tough motherfuckers.
They knew how to fucking, they knew wrestling moves.
They were tough.
They fought all the time.
They were bad motherfuckers.
You did not.
They pull your eyeball out these guys.
They were not fucking around.
Knocked out six people that were coming.
That's what I mean.
They were on their way.
That's what I mean.
They don't realize they're not in the same league as these guys.
And they get the shit beaten at them.
This has happened a lot in the back in the day here.
So that's what happened.
It's knocking people out.
Nanjo, as a result, will enter the forum arena Tuesday night with his shoulders still unpinned in America.
So he still hasn't lost, they're saying.
Basanta Singh, manager of the Hindu, arrived in Wichita last night with Stouffer.
Nanjo's expected today and may work out in the Wichita AC gym.
Ooh, you can go there and heckle him if you want.
Not too much, though, because he'll knock your ass out.
Yeah.
That's kind of what the article's telling you.
Approach with caution.
He's kind of badass.
Yep.
January 10th, 1934, massive heavies put on sizzler, which sounds way grosser than it actually is here.
Hindu is beaten.
So there we go.
He's beaten.
Charlie Fisher showed a punch his own friends didn't know he had when he knocked out the pestiferous Nanjo Singh.
The match had a lot of action while it lasted,
and while there was little or no wrestling done,
the fans expected none.
It was a braw fighting,
which always crowd pleaser.
Fisher's winning hold was a sock in the jaw,
administered when Nanjo persisted in kneeing the little Wisconsin grappler,
who sets claim to the world's light heavyweight title.
See?
And then he goes up in a title match against a baby face,
and then this is when he loses.
He had to be undefeated.
come up to this. The referee
here, oh, I guess
it says, referee Kice, who evidentially
was officiating with no rules
in force, Fisher
hauled off and swung, because a closed fist
in wrestling is supposed to be illegal, even to this
day. Oh, really? Yeah.
You'll always see the
watch wrestling. You'll always see when a guy
hits him like they always do. You'll always see the
referee, do this every time.
Is that saying, open hand, open hand.
He'll see his
smack is his thing.
hit him with the open hand.
Even though they're never,
you know what I mean?
It's guys have been punching forever.
They're not touching them.
But every time the referee goes,
nope, don't do that.
Okay, and it keeps punching,
and then he punches him back and it's funny,
but that's technically supposed to be a big deal.
Because back then, that was the big deal.
You could have a closed fist punch
be a huge move because it's illegal.
So that could be, he hit him with a closed fist.
Oh, my God, and the ref didn't see it.
What, piece of shit.
Yeah, the fans are yelling,
Oh, gee, he hit him with a closed fist.
And the rest going, I didn't see it, you know, wrestling shit here.
They said it looked like another riot would occur,
but the grappler and referee were pried apart and peace declared.
Nanjo had to get his heat after that.
So that's funny.
February 13, 1934,
sing tribes for third in row here.
Nanjo Singh, the Buxham-Rassland Bizark.
Buxham Rasslin Bezark from Old Bombay.
That's what they call.
It's a lot of bees, but what's a B-Z-A-R-K?
Bees-A-E-E-Z-A-R-K.
Never heard that word before, ever.
The Buxum and Buxum, doesn't that mean you have big tits?
Yeah.
That means you got a rack on you?
Guys got some great titty.
Maybe a fat ass on you, too.
Maybe like a nice.
Old Norse? Oh, it's a berserker.
A bzark.
Yeah, B-Zar.
So like a, like a, like a.
Crazy Viking.
Yeah, Bucksum wrestling Bizarc from Old Bombay.
The big-tittied berser.
Big titty, he's hot.
You want to come out?
He's crazy and stacked.
He'll make his first Cleveland start as a topliner tonight when he mixes with bad Dutch Hefner
in the final fracas of Mr. Walter Taylor's good-looking show at the equestrian.
Oh, final fracas.
Mr. Taylor says this is a match arranged in response to popular demand.
So Nanjo is in demand.
He is
Yeah.
Interesting.
Cleveland Press,
February 2834,
Rassel Ref put on Pan.
Plummer and Singh
say third man and foe
must be beaten.
All right.
Let's figure out
what that means.
Johnny Plummer
and Anjo Singh
were holding a post-mortem
in the dressing room
after their wrestling tangles
at the equestrium last night.
This, said Mr. Singh,
is very tough,
is very tough wrestle town.
Yeah, Plummer agreed.
You got to beat your opponent
and the referee too.
They were discussing the orders issued by the new boxing commission,
which are supposed to add a certain refinement to wrestling exhibitions.
The code calls for the referees to step in and interrupt proceedings at practically any sign of mayhem.
Enforced the rules.
Yeah.
It got wild, and they were having riots and shit, and they said,
the boxing commission, who doesn't know this is fake, or allegedly doesn't know it's fake,
and is just taking the money that they get from the gate and doesn't,
care. They want to make it look more legitimate is what this is, essentially, here.
In spite of this, plenty of excitement found its way onto the program.
Sing and Dutch Hefner meeting in a return grunt fest.
Ew. They're going to fuck. Gross.
We're just going to shit together. Oh, man. Just sit bare holding hands next to each other.
Holy shit. Staged an old-fashioned brawl with hair pulling, biting, eye gouging, and
kicking featured. The event had gone a bit more than
20 minutes when Dutch got to budding
the Bombay buster from rope to rope.
Then he misjudged his
distance and went flying out of the ring
onto the press table.
Oh shit. The way you end a match
and was up and about
to reenter the ring
when Zingo Mr. Singh let
loose a butt himself and
Hefner was still
seated in the tan bark at the count
of ten. As he crawled
back into the ring he had butted him
which is a old move here.
Um, even that we're going to really, uh, really buckle down and, and, and go after the rule breaking.
They use that in the 90s and ECW as a fucking thing.
Bill Alfonso, the little referee, came in and as his character being the referee that's going to clean this all up and he would get food.
And this match is not going to go.
This is going to be a wrestling match.
None of this shit.
And then 9-1-1 would come out and choke slam him and the crowd would go bat shit.
and they'd roll out of the ring and that was that.
So that worked 60 years later.
That was still working.
Alas, Singh is disqualified.
Following out the new commission orders,
there was no winners technically declared by the referees,
so the show hobbled along under its if and but status.
If it had been staged under the pre-reform rules,
Singh would have been the victor if referee Bull Wheatelman didn't disqualify him for the hasty butt.
as he was disqualified for that headbutt, I mean, went in.
March 7th, 1934, Nanjo Singh beats Ohioan.
I read that quickly and thought it said woman.
And I was like, what?
Nanjo Singh beats a woman.
Nice.
Yeah.
Nanjo Singh, heavyweight wrestler from Bombay, held a decision over Ray Carpenter of Lancaster today.
But some 2,000 spectators who witnessed the bout also included referee Jim Berger and several policemen in the decision.
2,000 now they're drawing.
That was 300 a year and a half ago.
Yeah.
Now it's a big deal now.
Sing through Carpenter in 1448, but the end of the bout saw the two principles,
Berger and finally the police and part of the crowd mingling earnestly in and around the ring.
Riot.
They're trying to stop a riot again.
This guy's great.
Awesome.
So riot every goddamn time he fights.
No shit.
And right under this, telephone service is disrupted by gunmen.
Oh, no.
You go, how does that happen?
Well, telephones on 14 circuits here were thrown out of commission for nearly four hours one afternoon recently when an unknown gunman crippled an Ohio bell cable across the Grand River with four revolver shots.
Somebody shot the phone cable.
He shot the phone cable that connected shit.
And he was like, well, fuck these people.
You're not going to have a goddamn phone.
March 15th, 1934, Singh is given heave ho.
Oh, boy.
Because of Nanjo, because Nanjo Singh is temporarily at least public enemy number one, according to the 1934 rankings of the Cleveland Boxing Commission, he's the number one heel.
Wow.
Wrestling magazines all, when I was growing up, would have the rankings of everybody and they would have most loved and most hated.
He's most hated.
He's fucking best heel going right now.
Yep.
So, yeah.
Instead, gentleman John Killonis, who.
who was to have been Singh's partner will face midget Charlie Fish.
That doesn't sound like a real imposing nickname.
No.
Wow. Interesting.
Or Charlie Fisher.
Fisher regarded as one of the best light heavies in the game,
recently won an elimination tournament at Columbus.
He claims to be undefeated over a period of six years with one exception.
Wow.
All right.
Interesting here.
What is this?
Right under this is an ad, Jimmy, the ads.
We're going to a show tonight.
Right.
Matinee 25 cents, evening 30 cents.
The blazing new screen star Francis Letterer.
Uh-oh.
In Broadway's matinee idol in his first, Broadway's matinee idol in his first picture with Alisa Landy.
Okay, he's a matinee idol.
So Francis is a man.
He's supposed to be the next big leading man.
Alisa Landy.
in Man of Two Worlds,
a story of barbaric love,
another big stage show,
Broadway Peekaboo.
Okay.
Is it dirty or what?
Featuring Dance of the Seven Veils.
All right.
That sounds dirty, right?
Also playing Longtack Sam.
That sounds like porn.
It's not quite porn,
but this is, I believe,
this is pre-code, I believe.
I can't remember when the Hayes Code.
You notice,
if you see a movie from like
1959,
there's no cursing in it
or anything.
Right.
That's the Hayes Code
was in place.
The Hayes Code was
what is that?
Well, when Talkies
first started in the late
1920s through the 30s,
people were putting out
fucking dirty movies.
Not porn,
but like there was tits,
there was cursing,
there was violence,
there was a lot of gangster movies,
all those James Cagney movies
and all that shit.
They were like,
they were considered filthy
and all that.
So they put on the Hayes Code,
which was,
you can't have anything that suggests anything bad.
Anytime you'd see people kissing,
the camera would move to like a window and you'd fade away.
That's all you could show.
Well, let's give them their privacy.
Yep, you couldn't show anything more than a quick kiss.
You couldn't show a long embrace kiss because that meant sex.
You couldn't show super violent shit.
That's why musicals became popular because they had nothing else to show you
so they put a big musical on.
That's why it's all the Judy Garland movies and all that shit in the 40s.
That's why they existed, basically.
And then, so then musicals ended up having fight scenes in them.
But they were considered like haughty, you know, like.
It was art.
Yeah.
Yes.
They weren't just two guys, whatever.
Then in the 60s, everybody said, fuck your code.
There's no law that says that I can make whatever I want, first amendment.
And then from there on, you know, we have now, which is, get to actually see.
art and what people want to make. It's better.
But you had to be, now you have to be warned for what you're about to watch.
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, they warned you. Then they came up with ratings because people were
having all this crazy shit. You didn't need ratings before because it was all under the
Hayes Code. Then they had to catch up and go, holy shit. You don't know whether to take your kid
to a movie or not because it might be a horrible movie with tits and blood and shit.
There might be balls in this. That's why they came out with the ratings after that.
We might see Jason Siegel's full dick.
I know every time I go in with theater, fingers crossed for Jason Seagull's full dick.
I'm looking for full frontal Siegel, baby.
I could pick his dick out of a lineup, James.
That's terrifying.
He's got a giant mushroom tip on that thing.
That's hilarious.
April 30 of 1934, the Wichita Eagle.
Nanjo has no wish to battle cops again here this week.
He's done.
Because his only reason of appearance.
here Tuesday night is to beat Everett Marshall under Texas rules.
It's a Texas death match.
Yeah.
They still do Texas death match, and that is from the 30s.
This is the tech.
I don't know why that made it.
Texas death match made it sound wild.
What makes, yeah, what makes it so special with Texas?
There's just no rules.
It's a Texas rules.
Nanjo Singh, the Hindu, expressed last night, has desired to have no interference this time
from police officers that will be at the ring.
side to prevent a possible riot among the fans.
In fact,
Nanjo promises not to
what is this perm,
not to perm,
it's a newspaper, so I think
there's a letter like smudged out, not to
something any officers to take advantage
of him, not to permit any officers
to take advantage of him, which
he charges happened in the last
match when he defeated Chief
Gypsy Chiewski
Chusky under
the same rules that he will wrestle
Marshall. So think about
as a heel, he's saying, I'm not letting the cops
fuck with me this time. So people are going,
shit, we've got to show up. He might end up fighting half the
police force. This is going to be awesome.
What great fucking,
just great promo skills here.
Great marketing, yeah. The Hindu,
who has been in Wichita for the past three days,
claims that no one of the
uniformed officers
had that one of the
uniformed officers had no right to
strike him with a blackjack. He's claiming
he got hit by a black. He said, I am coming to
Wichita to wrestle Marshall and not to fight a bunch of policemen.
However, I'll see to it that they don't take advantage of me this time.
Oh, this time.
Policemen in the United States are not a novelty anymore to Nanjo.
He's been thrown in jail no less than a dozen times for causing a riot.
Wow.
Yeah, only last week he spent a night behind bars in Kansas City for chewing off the ear of a wrestler.
That can't be.
That has to be a work, right?
that has to be a work.
I thought he wasn't allowed in Kansas City anymore.
I thought that was part of the deal.
Again, you can't go chew.
How do you chew somebody's ear off?
That leaves a...
You can only do that twice.
Yeah.
I think this is just...
I mean, Christ, even in the 80s, early 80s,
wrestling didn't, like, the storylines
didn't get from territory to territory,
so you could say anything.
So I think that's all it is.
Back, they're saying that happened.
despite Nanjo's worries about the special police,
his ambition to decisively beat Marshall in a match
where everything goes with the exception of the strangleholds.
You can do anything but choke a man.
The advanced tickets sales start this morning.
So get your tickets is what that is.
Okay.
May 1st, 1934, from the Evening Eagle,
Matt Chief suspend Nanjo Singh for a year.
Uh-oh.
That means he's leaving the territory.
Yeah, he'll be right back.
He's been in the territory for a while.
Now he's going to be kicked out of the territory because he's too evil.
And then he'll come back in six months and everyone will go, oh, it's him again.
Holy shit.
That's great.
Hindu will go on shelf after match tonight.
He'll just move on to the next territory.
That's all.
A wrestler suspended for earbiting episode holds up his purse.
Nanjo Singh, Calcutta, India versus Everett Marshall.
That's fucking funny.
Now they're still calling, now they're saying Calcutta.
for many different things.
Nanjo Singh,
rough Hindu wrestler,
today felt the heavy hand
of the National Wrestling Association,
which is, by the way,
the precursor to the real NWA.
Oh,
because that's the National Wrestling Alliance.
So there was an NWA
that then became the NWA.
That was a thing.
Following his match with Everett
under Texas rules at the forum tonight,
Singh will be on the outlaw list
until May 2nd, 1935, according to official information released this morning by Frank Gilfleece, Kansas State Sports Commissioner.
The Hindu's been suspended from wrestling for one year by the National Wrestling Association because he mutilated the ear of another wrestler, Tim McDermott, in Kansas City recently.
McDermott suffered the loss of his ear in the brawl.
Now, he probably lost his ear in like a farming accident.
Yeah.
Because that's what they would do.
Guys, if they would get hurt doing something else,
and they just like wear a prosthetic or something and get a bitten off?
Who knows?
But like if guys get hurt doing something else, they'll have, you know,
guys who are supposed to be evil, jump them and make it look like they're doing that damage.
All right.
Now he's got to have knee surgery, which he was going out for knee surgery anyway,
but now got a guy some heat too, so fuck it.
By special permission, Nanjo will be allowed to go through with the match against Marshall,
but it's the last time you're going to see him.
It's the last chance to see him be beaten before your eyes.
When informed of his suspension,
Nanjo claimed that it was some more dirty work
of the American grapplers who are desirous to rid him
from the United States.
He insists he's been outdrawing the other wrestlers
and gate receipts and there's a certain amount of jealousy
among American wrestlers.
He claims that no, he is no rougher than some of the Americans
and adds that the ear mutilation in Kansas City
He was purely accidental.
I didn't mean it.
I mean, fuck, Mick Foley's ear got popped off, so.
Shit happens.
It happened in the ropes.
Yeah.
He got it caught in the ropes.
You ever seen it?
It's gross.
Mick Foley lost an ear in the ropes?
It got like half, it was like hanging off.
It got torn out.
Oh, Jesus.
It was in like Germany.
I think he was fighting Vader.
Remember Vader, big giant guy?
Uh-huh.
Mick Foley had this move where he would get thrown into the ropes,
and he would put his head in between the ropes and fly over him and be twisted in the
ropes.
So his head would be twisted in between the two ropes to be hanging, basically.
If you have the steel cables, it really, they're tough and they're tight, and he was trying
to pop it off and ripped his ear off with it.
Pretty fucking gross, yeah.
That was real.
What effect Manjo's suspension will have upon his match with Marshalls, a matter of
conjecture, as this will mark his last match in the United States for at least a year?
Oh, he's going to leave for a while.
Yeah, meanwhile, it's just this territory, but that's what's very funny.
They said that this is the Wichita Athletic Club,
notifying Nanjo of his suspension here.
They have a big, all this official language.
I've received notification from the Missouri Athletic Commission
in affiliation with the National Wrestling Association,
notifying me that Nanjo Singh has been suspended for one year,
effective May 1, 1934.
Your contract with Singh for appearance,
May 1st will be recognized.
So they are pushing this shit.
Like you can't even see him again.
In unrelated news,
Oh, oh.
Strong man dies of heart attack.
Oh.
Okay.
Strong man, weak heart.
Yeah, Tommy Ryan, well known to Wichita students.
Joseph Juvenal, who died in Monette, Missouri,
following an exhibition of strength before the school children of that city Monday,
was well known.
Wichita.
Juvenile or Tommy Ryan, as he preferred to be known, had been in Wichita at intervals for the past
several years and thrilled Wichita students with exhibitions of strength and steady nerves,
which he declared was due to his abstinence from liquor and tobacco.
That'll do it, yeah.
If you live clean like me, you can do this.
And then he'd fucking drop dead, which is amazing.
He was 85 years old.
What?
What?
He was 85.
Yeah, I don't care what you abstain from at 85.
You're going to die.
It doesn't matter.
You're going to die.
Yeah.
He lifted a 200-pound weight to demonstrate the benefits of a life free from tobacco, liquor, and swearing.
Because that'll make you weak, too.
And his heart exploded?
Swearing is amazing.
Suffered a heart attack as he hoisted the weight above his head.
Awesome.
Oh, God.
I wish that was on video.
So now kids, if you don't drink or smoke or cursed, you can do this too.
And they fucking fell over and died.
You can die at 85.
He concluded the act, however, but collapsed and died at his hotel.
Instructors recalled they saw his hand go to his heart as he swung the heavy weight back into place.
Oh my God, that is fucking amazing.
It's incredible.
Evidence that Juvenile was ill also was ill also was seen in the fact that in demonstrating his steady nerves, he wounded a helper slightly with a sword.
He's trying to show, look how steady I am and he wasn't very steady and fucking cut somebody.
David Martin, 17, a student went to the stage to hold in his hand a potato juvenile was going to slice by swinging the sword.
The evangelist of health made a slight miscalculation of the distance and Martin was cut.
It was the first time juvenile has ever botched the act.
Well, he's about to die.
Christ.
That's fucking amazing.
His grammar and diction were poor, but he told the children to forget that because he only had three years schooling.
Swering, he said, didn't show bravery and use of liquor and tobacco only hurt the individual and shortened life.
Oh, boy.
That is amazing.
Juvenile called himself the ex-middleweight champion of the world and often told children mighty stories of hand-to-hand combat in the ring.
Tommy Ryan, the fighter of fighter, the sporting world, knew was now, now lives in Culver City, California.
Okay.
May 20th, 1934, Hefner and Singh will repeat act because now they're somewhere else.
Nanjo Singh, the Hindu and Dutch Hefner, the former football star, will strut their matte stuff.
Ew.
Once more in the last of the two headline matches at Monday night show at Memorial Hall.
These two heavies put on their act at the last show and did it in such a manner.
They took the house by storm, and the fans clamored for them to be rematched, according to the promoter.
Oh, man, that's fucking amazing.
Singh was not only disqualified for roughness, but to add insult to injury, a spectator slipped into the ring and socked him in the Adams apple.
Oh.
Somebody fucking came in and jacked him.
They had no security back then.
Well, Singh and Hefner went right from Springfield to Cleveland the very next night and displayed their wares.
Singh was the winner.
June 1st, 1934, Abe Helpern, Matt winner.
Referee decides the issue by disqualifying Nanjo Singh.
Now they're just doing a lot of disqualifying.
Abe Helpern, the fighting New York Jewish grappler,
brought here by Jack Worst, proved to the entire satisfaction of some 1,200 customers that he not only can take it, but can dish out the dirt with the best of him when he disposed of Nanjo Singh.
Let's see, what happened here?
Was it a, yeah, the bout lasted 15 minutes, and during that time, everything but wrestling was offered with Singh depending upon his well-known stranglehold to help him out of the tight spots.
The event was scheduled for one hour or for one fall to win.
Both boys in the feature event have given birth to their desire to have a rough house from the semifinal.
Jesus Christ, that is a crazy sentence.
So, yeah.
Oh, green seal beer.
We just repealed that the shitty amendment here with the alcohol.
So call your dealer or phone AD 3291 for that case or pony for the weekend.
Pony keg.
Pony keg, yeah.
Your dealer.
Your dealer.
I guess your beer dealer.
Right.
This is the Buckeye.
Beer guy on the phone.
Yeah, the Buckeye Brewing Company.
Uh-huh.
Lexington Herald, August 23rd, 1934.
Nanjo Singh, Hurls Carp.
from Ring, knocking him unconscious, near riot occurs at wrestling show.
Oh, there we go.
Fucking heel, man.
He's good shit.
Nanjo Singh, a tough baby from Bombay, India, took the main event of wrestling at the
Spring House arena last night, much to the displeasure of the crowd and the discomfort
of his opponent, Ray Carpenter.
Singh weighs 186 pounds.
He's lost a lot of weight.
Wow.
And is every ounce a roughneck.
He and Carpenter battled and grown for 35 minutes before Carpenter took.
took him at a disadvantage and pinned him with a body pin. Choking, slugging, and biting,
with referee Olson taking part at intervals, characterized the first fall. Singh took the second
fall with a toehold, applied in two minutes upon Carpenter. The fall started with Singh
leading, but Carpenter immediately began a series of body blocks and budded Singh around three or four
times, then missed his foe completely and fell through the ropes to the gravel floor of the
arena. He was barely able to crawl into the ring at the count of 15. He gave up when Singh applied a
terrific toehold. So that's how they would... The count of what? 15 instead of 10, it was 15 to get back in the
round count. That's a long count. Sing, booed all during the match by the fans, pretended to be
heroic and lifted Carpenter from the mat as though to carry him from the ring. But when he reached the
ropes. He pitched his burden
to the ground, knocking Carpenter senseless.
Oh, what a great heel move.
That's so great. No, no, no, I'm going to help him. It's great.
No, no, no, no, everything I want to help this guy and then dumped him.
It's a ruin.
Oh, that's amazing.
The crowd was in an uproar,
and police and deputies were rushed to the scene to prevent trouble.
As soon as things had apparently calmed down enough for a safe passage to the dressing
room, Singh was taken from the ring by police.
but despite the protection, one beer bottle found its mark on the back of Singh's head.
Shit.
Singh continued to his dressing room under his own power, although struck at a terrific blow by the enraged fan.
Carpenter, unconscious was carried from the ringside to the dressing room.
That's so amazing.
They stretchered him.
This is, they did this forever.
He's unconscious.
He's unconscious, which, I mean, that's so funny.
The match was officially awarded to the Hindu.
Wow, that's fucking funny.
October 25th, 1934.
Oh, the great Mephisto, injured as Singh wins main bout.
He's a very famous guy here.
Silence is golden.
So it seemed Wednesday evening at the Fairground Auditorium during the weekly wrestling show
as a deep hush fell over the spectators like a huge damper.
Fun.
The cause of such tomb-like stillness where raucous catcalls interspersed with mixed
booze and cheers usually pervade the atmosphere
was the injury of the great Mephisto
in the second fall of his match with Nanjo Singh.
Mephisto had taken the first fall from the Hindu
after 12 minutes with a scissor Nelson.
This is also what he does in these best of three falls.
Nanjo loses the first fall,
clean, lets the wrestler guy do wrestling moves and beat him.
And then he beats him in the second round,
some nefarious shit, and then does some crazy shit
for the third fall to cause a rematch to be necessary and piss everybody off.
Mephisto had been had taken the first fall, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Being repeatedly parted by the referee who disliked the illegitimate demonstration showed by Singh,
Mephisto refused to take the fall without earning it.
Oh, he played the baby face of all baby faces.
In the second stanza of the bout, Singh applied a number of arm butts and then picked Mephisto off off the floor.
for a body slam which seemed to injure the great wrestler in the neighborhood of the spinal base.
After two more, he went, he went, ah, you know, they hold their back after they get body slam.
That's what he did.
After two more such slams, Mephisto was inert on the canvas for an easy count.
Three body slams, he's done.
Unable to the return to the ring for the third fall because of the injury,
Mephisto conceded about to sing with the referee making the award.
He's too injured to even go on.
numerous times during the early stages of the bout,
the fans were on their feet protesting
every foul tactic used by Singh
and once when the gladiator made a show of resentment,
the ring side was a swarming circle
of wrathy visaged spectators.
They tried to kill him.
Thus the fans gave a vent to their feelings
in a manner far from ordinary.
Hushed tones were for the mystery man of the ring,
Mephisto.
Mephisto had spotted Singh
25 or 30 pounds, weighted
manage.
That is
fucking awesome.
So they're just
doing
in this next
match,
December 14th,
1934,
Indian hits
referees too.
Oh.
Now he's
doing all this
shit.
Wow, this
is fucking
amazing.
With two
referees in the
ring,
because there's so
much trouble
with saying
they had to have
two referees,
which is also
a gimmick they
used later.
Kilonis
had trouble
getting in
his usual
tricks,
and as
a result wanted to fight the two officials. Several times he tried to put one of the
referees out of the way after scrapping with both at the beginning of the match,
um, hit Gordon Arquette at the second fall, which Singh took in less than two minutes.
So the other guy was doing it. So it's heel, heel there. Um, January 16th, 1935, pair of
quote, nasty men, Bull Curry and Nanjo Singh, Bull Curry is another real famous guy,
will clash in the main go at Woodland tonight. It should be rough. They're just selling.
the spectacle of blood at this point for this one.
It's going to be rough.
Yep.
Nanjo Singh, who holds a record of having beer bottles,
bounced off his dome by irate fans,
will match his repertoire of dirty tricks
with those of Bull Curry,
who's a nasty man himself at the Woodlander Auditorium tonight.
That's fucking hilarious.
January 17, 1935,
Nanjo Singh defeats Bull Curry in the ring.
Oh, boy.
Before he took the deciding third fall.
Of course.
The Indian gained the decision when he climbed back into the ring
after both grapplers had fallen through the ropes
and were stunned when they hit the concrete floor.
Singh barely got back into the arena before the referee finished counting.
They did that old trick.
Both guys out of the ring.
Yeah.
The counts going on.
They're both trying to get in.
One guy at the count of nine just throws himself on the apron and gets back into the ring
while the other guy's hanging off the ropes trying to get in.
So that guy won because he beat the count.
That's an old trick.
February 19, 1935,
Grunter slugs ref and is blackjacked by cop.
Manjo Singh, 200-pound wrestler from India,
floored the referee at a wrestling show tonight
after losing to his opponent and was,
what is this?
Something by the fans by a squad of city and state police,
saved from the fans by a squad of city and state police.
Singh's battle with Eddie Malone, the referee,
was abruptly halted by a blackjack wielded by one of those policemen.
Jesus.
Marion Meister, 180 pounds, Charleston wrestler, and Singh each got one fall.
Then Singh was disqualified for rough tactics.
The referees raised the other guy's hand.
Singh retaliated with an attack on Malone.
The officers escorted Singh to his dressing room while others carried this guy out of the ring.
Same thing.
They stretchered him off.
He's got to be let out by police.
They know how to fucking do this.
It's funny that there's not a lot of new things happening in wrestling.
It's all pretty well done to death.
Everything is that old thing.
Yeah.
That's it.
Let's talk about that old thing.
Everything's that old thing.
It's just you've got to figure out a way to make it new every time.
But they're the same tactics all the time.
It's all they have.
March 28, 1935, Hindu issues ultimatum.
He says he will squat.
Bush Bull Curry and will not take any taunts from the crowd.
Oh.
So you come out and taunt him.
He'll really be mad at you.
So don't buy tickets and come and yell at him.
He'll be upset about it.
That's what he said.
That's fucking amazing.
The event promises to be one of the most spectacular staged in Cincinnati in sometime.
Singh, heinous Hindu killer, heinous Hindu killer now, has but one contender for his championship
in illegitimate warfare.
And that's Curry, cannibalistic forearm basher and headbutter.
Whoa.
Bull is only a big poluka, said Singh.
Somebody told him he was tough and he was sap enough to swallow it.
Well, he's going to have to swallow plenty when I get a hold of him.
Wow.
My goodness.
That's one thing that has gone out of wrestling.
In all of their promos, they don't threaten to rape each other's face is quite enough, I don't think, anymore.
There's not a lot of that going on anymore.
Not a lot of what I'm going to make you swallow.
It doesn't come out.
I got no use for those half-baked rough babies.
Curry is just like the crowd.
They both do a lot of bellowing, but they pipe down when I put the finger on him.
Jesus.
He's challenged also.
Sing has become so incensed in some of his Queen City matches that he's climbed out of the ring and challenged the paying public.
Often he subsists in his wrestling to shake a menacing fist at the fans.
He tells fans to lay off.
He said, if any of the customers don't like the way I'm going to give Curry the works, they can make something out of it.
From now on, I'm through taking a lot of lip from a bunch of office punks who don't know the first principle about wrestling.
And if they don't lay off, then I'm going to see what can be done about it.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's amazing.
I give you my lip.
Yeah, I got some lip for you.
Wow.
Who else is on this card?
anybody, Olaf, Swede Hanson.
Christ, there was a, that's a name
that they've reused over and over, because
Swede Hanson was in the 70s and 80s.
There was Swede Hanson, for Christ's sake.
He was this big, fat blonde guy
who had a, like, a leather,
wear like a jacket and it had
a Confederate flag on it. That's what he
was. He was from, like, North Carolina.
Very nice.
Bad boy Brown.
That was, we had fucking bad news
Brown.
Members of the Toe Twisters Club
and 500 women will be admitted free to the carnival matchmaker.
Oh, wow, they're going to let women in free.
So Nanjo could beat them up.
July 13, 1935, Nanjo's saying hurt in Marshall Battle.
Hindu loses scrap and suffers shoulder injuries in Cincinnati.
So poor shit, that's a reason why he's leaving the territory.
Got to have an excuse.
Here is Pittsburgh now, September 435, moving from Cincinnati.
He moves.
They all do. That's what you had to do at the time, especially as a heel.
You come in on the big undefeated tough guy, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Get up to the champ. Let them beat you move on and come back later.
That's that work.
Nanjo Singh, the 240-pound wrestler who fears neither man nor beast, quote-unquote,
has some explaining to do about his opinion of a blonde admirer.
Nanjo fled as the woman in a holiday mood approached him in the ring where he was wrestling bull zarness.
The Hindu floored Zarnas
The first time in 16 minutes and 49 seconds
One minute and seven seconds later
Zarnas made Nanjo holler uncle
Enter the blonde
She walked around the ring
Giving fans a greeting with the familiar
Hand clap wave of the ring
She patted Zarnas on the head
And put her arm around him
Zarnas grinned
Enter Nanjo Singh
The young lady hurried across the ring
Toward the Hindu
And amid the hoots and cheers of customers
Nando took to his heels
He ran it because he's a heel
He can't be seen liking an attractive blonde girl.
He's got to go, ew, get away from me, American woman.
Gross.
In other news, stabbed man freed.
Oh.
Peter Dunlap, 24 of 906 East Diamond Street, Northside,
who was held on a charge of drunkenness after a quarrel in West Park in which he was stabbed by a colored man Monday night.
Was, Jesus, was discharged in Northside Police Court yesterday.
Dunlap was treated at the general hospital for a cut below the heart.
They're like, you've suffered enough.
Go home.
Fuck.
That's amazing.
September 12th, 1935, wrestling commission suspends Nanjo Singh from Cincinnati.
So now he can't go.
And he's fine, $10.
Oh.
That's right.
This was for a match that he failed to listen to the referee here.
September 27, 1935, Nanjo Singh, back for Armory School.
scrap. Hindu tackles, this is the Akron Beacon Journal,
Hindu tackles Rasputin and headliner, well, you can't beat him.
I don't think you did.
How many finishing moves can you do on that guy?
He'll just keep coming back.
It's a lot of body slams.
It's a lot.
Hill and Achewy in semifinal.
Nanjo Singh comes back to this armory, and his opponent will be the bearded Russian
Ivan Rasputin for the best two out of three falls.
That's funny as fuck.
I don't know.
Oh my God, it is a chew.
Flying tackles and surfboards will be featured by Walter Sneeze Achoo.
Ah.
Amazing.
When he tangles with Henry Hill.
Hey, Hendry.
Hey, Andrew.
He's fighting Henry Hill.
A cheer's going to fight Hank Hill?
Henry Hill is good fellas.
And there's him, too.
Yeah.
He's the fucking cartoon from the,
Henry fucking Hill, for Christ's sake.
Jesus Christ.
In the semifinal, also for two out of three tumbles.
Living the rest of his life like a schnuck out here now.
Yeah.
There's also a...
Catch up and egg noodles.
Yeah, ketchup and egg noodles.
There's also an ad for donkey baseball game.
Uh-oh.
Valley Ridge with Orville colored team.
Jesus Christ.
What?
Okay.
Christmas Eve, 1935.
Nanjo singing, Rasputin, start riot.
Dude, he's, every fucking place he goes, he starts a riot.
He's fucking awesome.
I mean, yeah, top heel.
A lot of comedy shows.
People want to be involved in the show, and they're getting it.
They're getting it here.
He's a top heel.
Every territory he goes to, he's a headliner, and he's within a fucking month of rioting.
He's got him going, man.
You get to be part of the show here.
Yeah, a crowd of more than 3,000 persons enraged at the kicking tactics.
used by Nanjo Singh
rioted during a wrestling match
at Arena Gardens last night.
As a result,
Singh was in Henry Ford Hospital today
suffering possible internal injuries.
Uh-oh.
Which is probably also not true.
Or it might be.
Might have got stabbed by somebody
because so many guys got stabbed back in the day.
It wasn't even funny.
Guys would be like,
they didn't even feel if they'd get back
and go, what the fucking,
why am I bleeding?
Oh my God.
They got stabbed on the way back.
It happened all the time.
Was it Blackjack Mulligan
who got his whole fucking leg
or maybe Stan Hansen got his whole fucking leg opened up by a razor blade.
Stab by somebody that was watching?
Oh, yeah.
A spectator?
They used to stab guys all the time.
All these old guys had tons of stab wounds on them.
They all had guns in their cars.
So when they got out to the parking lot, you wanted some, they'd shoot you.
They were fucking crazy these guys.
They had to be.
People were nuts and they thought it was real.
So they didn't know.
So as a result, he was in Henry Ford Hospital suffering these injuries.
The fans rioted.
after the match had gone 15 minutes.
Singh had kicked his opponent from the ring four times.
Amid cries of kill the brute, the crowd closed in, some with chairs and pop bottles.
This gets scary after a while.
They don't have security like they have now.
There's no barriers.
There's no hundred security guards.
Kill the brute.
Kill the brutes.
A folding chair.
Wow.
The melee was halted by a squad of police.
Referee Perry Shad awarded the match to Resputin.
Coincidentally, coincidentally.
Singh fainted and was rushed to the hospital.
He just played dead so they didn't murder him probably.
Yeah, interesting here.
February 13, 1936,
seek out slick Sahib in true oriental style.
Occidental doesn't get very far
in trying to pry secrets from Hindu Nanjo Singh
between Jouse at Matt Fiesta last night.
We'll leave it there for that one.
Who cares?
there was a oh a squir oh this guy had wow hold on a second here this guy's got a squirt you
gimmick like you know the blow shit in your face gimmick like great mooda killer con that gimmick of like
that kind of shit this guy's got that um interesting oh i got to read this uh sahib sahib softly
spoke the hindu nansha sing in a pun job a pun job from lahore now he's from a different down
but that was pretty nearly the beginning and ending of the toughest job of interviewing we've ever had,
trying to warp something out of a deaf, dumb and blind, whoa,
deaf, dumb and blind Negro down at Anniston, Alabama years ago.
This was just a side reference this guy made.
Muhammadian or Buddhist, we asked, Islam or Buddhist.
Sikh Sahab was the reply.
We wanted to send Sikh.
We wanted to send for the doctor, but Nanjo wasn't sick.
He was sick.
Ever dipped in the Ganges at whatever the fuck we went on?
No, he said.
We were told we weren't sick.
We told him we weren't sick.
He grinned.
Ever see the Tajmo?
It's a whole bunch of horse shit.
I just want to know what the other guy here.
Well, he had him put on us.
What the fuck?
Knowing the cobra's tricks, we rather look for a hood of some kind to be slipped over our
dome or a squirt of poison in the eye if he tried that we intended to i don't even know what
they're talking about this is just them doing a promo for them trying to make him sound like
this scary crazy foreigner that you should come see and want to stab um march 13th 1936 warning
beware of nangio sing pittsburgh press okay uh hysterical hindu to show on first wrestling bill at
moose temple next thursday wow um beware see this
That's how they promote him.
He's coming.
Watch out.
April 16th, 1936.
One look, and you hate him.
Nanjo, the Pittsburgh press.
Wow.
That's what they say about the hated Hindu
who wrestles here tonight at Moose Temple.
Jack Sherry and Irish Pat McClahery
in the main event.
That's what the people have,
quote, as soon as you see the guy, you'll hate him.
They've tagged Nanjo Singh,
the hated Hindu with this line,
and the burly wrestler who draws a bead on
Walter Potalak, Polish strongman tonight at the Moose Temple, actually loves it and tries to live up to this reputation.
Of course, that's his money.
Fair.
Yeah.
So that's the first time he was there.
Rasputin's also there.
May 5th, 1936, Pittsburgh Press.
Referee scores one, tosses sing out.
Horrid Hindu can't behave so Rasputin is declared winner.
They just do the same thing they just did in the other town.
now they're doing it here.
Yeah.
That's all.
They find him $25.
Same shit.
Quite a brawl for the main event.
The fans, it was a novelty seeing
resputin on the floor and watching Nanjo
tugging away at Ivan's bushy beard.
They did the same match too,
because that's what they used to do.
They'd have the same match in every town because who the fuck cares?
No one knows.
May 6th, 1938,
Waterloo Region record, Nanjo Singh disqualified.
Uh-oh.
Again, Nanjo Singh didn't improve his popularity even a little bit in the semifinal as he punched, kicked and butted Frankie Hart at every opportunity.
That's what does the same shit.
Okay.
So that's like kind of the 30s here.
He has established himself as a king shit heel going from territory to territory.
Yep.
Anywhere he wants to go, territory to territory.
He shows up.
He's a main eventer.
And he will, you will have riots.
and sellouts if you have this.
There will be a riot.
Absolutely.
So he developed into even better of a heel in the 40s.
He had the cobra death lock as his, that's his big move then.
He said he was a Sikh and wore a turban also.
That was a big part of the thing here.
They said he also adopted elements from Islam such as kneeling to pray to Mecca,
because that's how dumb we are here.
A Sikh prays to Mecca.
You know what I mean?
It's just, it's foreign shit.
That's all.
I'm surprised he didn't whip out a flute and get a cobra to pop up.
Like, just to look how foreign I am.
It horrifies a certain group of folks.
As part of his prematch rituals to present himself as a foreign menace.
Just look how foreign I am.
So he became one of the most hated heels of the early days here.
Here is the October 31st, 1941.
Nanjo Singh disqualified for use of Cobra Clutch.
What?
Cobra Clutch in 1940 fucking won.
Wow.
That was Sergeant Slaughter's big fucking move
because he was a GI Joke, the Cobra Clutch,
where he'd put that hold on you.
Wow.
Cobra Clutch.
That was a move from the 1940s for fuck's sake.
Nothing is new in wrestling.
Nothing.
It's just one of those things that you just know.
It just gets handed down.
It's all over with the famed co-same.
Cobra clutch, late great rassal grip invented by Nanjo Singh.
Nanjo was trying to do a job on Pat Fraley with his pet hold last night, and the referee
decided the common name for it was a stranglehold and disqualified him.
So he called it a chokehold.
So interesting.
Okay.
In other fusses, Paul Bosch, Paul Bosch, holy shit.
Okay.
Sorry.
Paul Bosch is the Houston promoter for Houston wrestling.
for years and years and years and years after this.
Paul Bosch, I believe, gotten some kind of accent or something that,
no, that was the other guy.
But Paul Bosch was a, he was a wrestler,
but I didn't know he, I mean, this is in the 40s he was wrestling.
He was around until 1987 as a promoter in Houston.
He is, they had the Paul Bosch Memorial show, Vince McMahon did in 1987 for him.
Fuck.
He's the guy.
You've seen the Gino Hernandez dark side of the ring, right?
Yeah.
He's the guy they were saying they thought was his father, the guy who took him in, basically, and made him a star and gave him money.
And they thought because he was banging his mom.
And they thought that he was Gino's father.
That's Paul Bosch.
So there he is.
Interesting.
I'm sorry.
I just saw that name.
And I was like, holy shit, I know that name really well.
Okay.
Interesting.
Nobody else in there that anybody's ever heard of.
January 9th, 42.
Matt show ends in hectic row.
Whipper loses.
Wipper Watson, a huge famous guy.
Big fucking huge star back then.
Nanjo Singh attacks Watson and fans give it to Nanjo.
Again, a riot.
There we go.
The main go was between Whipper Billy Watson and Gus Sonnenberg.
We'll be heard in hard to equal in speed, cleverness, and pleasing action.
Okay.
Nanjo Singh was under the, oh my God.
By 1045, the place was in an uproar.
Nanjo Singh was under the ring and yours truly was up in the grays.
All this came about rather sudden-like because Nanjo Singh is a very keen antipathy for Mr. Watson.
First, he started to coach Gus as to how to harm whipper.
And when Gus tossed Billy out of the ring and to the press side table, Nanjo waited until Billy was on his way back and then attacked him from behind.
They're even doing that.
What?
He's going with another wrestler to be the outside guy to fuck with him whenever this guy would distract him with the referee or whatever.
That's awesome.
I didn't know they did that back then.
It was typical access action.
Wow, that's a really strong statement during World War II.
Down went Whipper and Nanjo gave him the boots.
But not for long.
He had hardly touched Whipper when the ringsiders flew at him in a rage.
The fans.
The speed they showed in reaching Nanjo was only equaled by the.
the speed we showed in getting out of the ring side.
Nanjo, after a few pokes and several kicks, crawled under the ring, and there he stayed for
25 minutes, and only the dismantling of the ring forced him out.
The crowd hung around and waited for him, but six or seven bobbies and a few of the wrestlers
managed to steer him clear into a dressing room, and there he stayed until the bobbies and
the cold weather chased the heated spectators on their separate ways.
Amazing.
They wanted to kill him.
He hid under a fucking ring.
grounded by fans.
That's crazy, they say, and because of
Nanjo's ideas of how to spend a quiet night,
a swell bout was ended rather
abruptly. Yeah, they had a big, now he's a
big heel, and they get a big rematch with the other thing.
Works out for everybody.
1942,
Nanjo Singh captures Empire
Wrestling title.
Okay, so he won a title.
Empire, the British
Empire champion, he is.
This is from the Globe and Mail, so this is overseas.
Let's see.
A British Empire champion
The main bout of promoter Frank Toney
Fucking A.
There is again.
Now that's Paul Bosch.
Frank Toney is the promoter of the Toronto territory
for fucking decades and decades
before he died and gave it to his son, Jack Toney.
And if you watch WWF in the 80s,
the commissioner guy who would come out,
we're going to have a tournament for WrestleMania 4.
That's Jack Toney, Frank Toney's kid.
Wow.
Which is fun.
fucking amazing.
The Maple Leaf Gardens last night.
Yep, that's their promotion.
McCready was counted out after ramming into a ring post under Singh's driving attack.
Put him into a ring post.
That's very interesting.
Lou Thes next to face Nanjo Singh, February 1942.
42.
Lou Thes was around forever.
Holy fuck.
1942?
And Lou is a real, like, wrestlers, wrestler guy.
Like, he doesn't do all the crazy shit.
at all. That's not his, he doesn't do close fists. He does, you know, by the rules wrestling holds.
Yeah. Clever St. Louis Matt man to wrestle horrid Hindu on Friday night at the garden.
Horrid. Wow. It says it looks like Nanjo Singh's reign of terror in the local mat world will come to a sudden stop Friday night at Maple Leaf Gardens.
He's going to fight Luthes. So now it'll be, he comes in, works his way up the card. He's a crazy heel. He's going to fight Lufz now.
since he's arrived in these parts
he's created havoc and consternation
among the heavyweight grapplers
and his ruthless and primitive mat methods
have made it difficult to obtain matches for him
however promoter Tunney found
the magnificently built St. Louis Star
more than ready to tackle the Bombay bomber
great
that's fucking amazing
he's disqualified
for roughhouse tactics
of course here in the next thing
May 28th 42
to Thess Victor over Bad Manjo Singh.
It just reminds me of Badman Homer from fucking The Simpsons,
Badman Nanjo.
Wins last two falls in Torrid main event here.
So they had Singh win the first one,
and then Lufthaz had to come back and win both the other ones
to hold on to the World Championship.
So he is doing what they've always done here.
They really go into detail on the match,
like blow by blow.
We're not going to do that.
But he's so, so much, he's drawn so much heat.
Maple Leaf Wrestling, which was a big one, too,
Maple Leaf Wrestling.
It was one of the big territories here.
That's where Bruno San Martino started as well.
Oh.
He went up there because it was a shitload of Italians in Toronto.
So they brought him in, and then he got lured away by Vince McMahon.
Senior.
Not Junior.
Junior was a child at that point.
He got stabbed a bunch of times, got burned.
Got jumped by fans.
He was the guy, if you, like,
even just a guy like Jim Cornett,
listen to him talk about
when the Midnight Express,
his tag team that he managed,
would leave places like Homa, Louisiana
in the 80s,
where they would have to leave
literally with their guns out.
Wow.
Like, there's all these, you know,
people, you know, driving down the street
with their gun out the window.
Like, you come near me,
I'm going to fucking shoot you.
Like, people trying to chasing them in cars,
trying to run them off the road
and all this shit.
And this was in the 80s.
when everyone should have known wrestling was very fake by then.
You know, we're talking like 86.
Yeah, that's pretty well common knowledge by then, right?
Yeah, that's post, even the John Stossel thing where he got hit by David Schultz
and they did the whole expose on how they cut themselves and all that shit.
That was post that even, and they still didn't realize it.
That was after Vince McMahon told everybody it's fucking fake.
Right.
He literally told everybody so he could stop paying taxes.
Now, okay, Maple Leaf Gardens, this is going to be very specific to either people from Toronto or hardcore wrestling fans.
Okay.
If you're a hardcore wrestling fans, you have noticed that Maple Leaf Gardens, their ring set up is different from anywhere you've ever seen.
Okay.
Everywhere else, there's a ring.
You walk up to it.
There's an aisle.
You climb into the ring.
Maple Leaf Gardens, the platform goes, the aisle for the wrestling.
goes from the dressing room
all the way to the ring on a raised thing.
So they are above the fans.
Woodstock.
Like Woodstock.
Well, like, I think that's what WWE does
in that beginning part of the ramp now.
But this went all the way to the ring
so they would walk a level right into the ring.
That was to keep the fans from attacking them
as they were up higher.
Nanjo Singh is the reason why that's there.
And that was there.
Oh, is that right?
Even through the 80s that was there at that,
at Maple.
Leaf Gardens. So he, apparently, they needed a way to get him to the ring and back safely because
he was causing riots and they had to figure it out. So they were like, at least if we're up above them,
it's easier to fight them off, essentially. We can get them out. If we're on the same level,
they're going to kill us, basically. So that's really interesting. Here is a 1942 Niagara Falls.
It says Nanjo takes off the top. And it's a picture of him looking in the mirror with a
straight razor shaving his head.
Cleaning it up.
He shaves his head to evade the hair-pulling tactics of Rudy Potech at the arena tonight.
That's another gimmick.
I shaved my head so he can't grab my hair.
That's fucking funny.
It's an old tradition of the University of Georgia for members of the freshman football team to shave their heads.
This year, the boys have added patriotic touches with victory haircuts.
Note the dot and dash and v styles in the back row.
The trims are a reminder of Singh's recent hair-removing stunt.
There's a picture that you can't really see, but they're describing all these people.
Kids shaving their heads.
Cropping their head, yeah, yeah.
1945, April 2nd, the Toronto Telegram, big headline, no coat hangers allowed,
Tunney warns Nanjo Singh.
Yeah.
When Ivan Reputin, the rabid rush.
who he's been fighting for years now
and Nanjo Singh the harrying
Hindu met at Maple Leaf Gardens
it won't be because either one of them
is particularly
to oppose the other particularly
anxious to oppose the other
before this match was made
Resputin and Nanjo could have been referred to
as two minds but with a single thought
the thought was how best to force
Whipper Billy Watson into a match
or to coax promoter Frank Tunney
to arrange a match with Watson
Nanjo and a particularly
bellowing, in particular, bellowed loudly and long for a crack at Watson and the disputed
empire title.
But he was told to beat Rasputin first.
And do it without a coat hanger, said Tunny, getting in a swinity.
Get a baby out of him?
What's going on?
Yeah.
Sly dig meant from the episode last fall when Nanjo was disqualified for allegedly using a
wire coat hanger in an attempt to subdue Rasputin.
So foreign objects.
Or choke him or tie him up or what?
Either way, foreign objects.
Yeah.
Yep, that's how it works.
This is the beginning of foreign objects is what this is.
All right.
Awesome.
November 18th, 1947,
let's have a fling at Nanjo Singh is the headline.
Nanjo Singh, a Hindu wrestler of considerable note in these parts.
Yesterday, laboriously wriggled out of a self-inflicted stranglehold
and muttered to an awestruck group of press agents that he will present
3,000 rupees to any fan at Turner's Arena tomorrow night who will climb into the ring and break his celebrated cobra clutch.
So he's doing like a take on all-comers thing.
Urked by recent snide remarks from skeptical Matt Attics who've witnessed his recent local triumphs,
Singh is prepared to eliminate criticism before he encounters Babe Sharkey, a rootin-tootin Texan in the main feature of the card.
Interesting.
Quick note, they said here,
Figuring reveals that $3,000
should be worth about $1,000 in capitalistic currency.
Okay.
May 12th, 1948,
sporting extras here from the Toronto Telegram.
Stand back, folks.
Get the chains out of the toolbox, Tommy.
Here comes the Mad Mullah.
Nanjo Singh, the big load from Pakistan.
Now he's from Pakistan.
And a big fat load.
And a big fat fucking, big fat, bucksum load from Pakistan or roaring.
When I land through the strand and I act like I am, what is this a fucking, this is a poem they wrote.
This is a poem they wrote like a Nandro Singh poem.
This is fucking crazy.
Before Phillyke as much as go, Yucke Singh had them dangling on a coat hanger again with the coat hanger.
Okay.
Interesting.
Let's see.
January 30th, 1950,
Song of Decisive Victory issues from Nanjo Singh.
According to Nanjo Singh, he will beat,
oh, Kowalski, is that, is that Kemp?
Is that Killer Kowalski in 50?
Is he around?
Yeah, Walter.
It's Valdek, but he's probably going by that to be more Polish or whatever,
but I think it's Killer Kowalski.
So decisively, when they meet in the main event bout at Maple Leaf Gardens on Thursday night,
promoter Frank Tunney will be unable to refuse him a British Empire title bout against Whipper Billy Watson.
Killer Kowalski, by the way, if you want a connection to modern wrestling, trained Triple H.
Oh, how about that?
So there you go.
There's a connection.
They said, that's a big order.
This is a big order.
The quick-tempered Hindu grappler has set himself on as Kowalski is not only one of the foremost Matt stars of today, but's one of the biggest and strongest.
along with his 265 pounds and 6'7.
Yeah, that's Killer Kowalski, for sure.
Kowalski possesses speed
that would ordinarily be attributed
to a much smaller heavyweight.
All right.
1951, June 29th,
this is in England again,
Watson triumphs over Nanjo Singh
in rugged battle.
So he finally got a shot
with Whipper Billy Watson here.
The blood flowed like wine
in Maple Leaf Gardens ring last night.
Okay, so it's just the newspaper, like wine.
As Whipper Billy Watson soundly trounced his arch enemy, Nanjo Singh, to the joy of 7,500 wrestling customers.
There you go.
We started out with three fucking hundred, and we are up to now, 75.
Yeah, that's a real good size arena, 7500.
That's a nice size place.
Wrestling fans, not being a cult to abhor the sight of blood, particularly Nanjo Singh's last night, gathering in joy.
at last night's gathering enjoyed the claret splashed proceedings of to the full.
Jesus.
The crimson flow was in all Nanjo's.
Earlier, Watson's forehead had been gashed by repeated pounding on the post chains.
Oh, connecting the turnbuckles to the ring.
The crimson flow, okay, and the end came after 13 minutes and 50 seconds with Watson regaining the ring.
And at the stroke of 10, while sing groveled on the cement, sing ungrossed.
He traveled himself sufficiently to make a wild dash for the nearest exit,
hotly pursued by lynch-minded fans.
Oh my God.
Even before the bloodletting began, Sing backed by his manager, Sam the Jerk.
That's a good name.
Had words with Watson, which culminated in a pushing bee, a pushing bee,
with referee Bert Maxwell managing to restore order in time for the bell
and the official commencement of the battle.
Yeah, this is like modern day wrestling now.
They got it all going on.
Bout is an official wrestling term, which has to be used even when Nanjo Singh is one of the chief participants.
Nanjo had the better of the early moments, perhaps the result of numerous, what the fuck, this newspaper is hard to read, something in which he delayed action.
Oh, he did the heel thing where he steps out of the ring, hold on, wait, I'm not ready, oh, blah, blah, blah.
He did the delay tactics, which guys still do.
So he tried to bite Watson's ear on the first exchange.
which seemed a pretty good indication of the trend the bout was going to take.
So anyway, yeah, they ended up cutting each other up real good, and that's that.
Here we go.
October 29th, 1952, tag team shit.
And this is like, I like, this is kind of modern wrestling.
They used to play on ESPN Classic.
In like the late 90s, they used to play the golden age of wrestling.
and it was like shit from the early to mid-50s.
Oh, yeah.
Because this is when,
this is when wrestling became a national fucking sensation.
Like, really?
Absolutely.
Wrestling was one of the first big things on TV.
Really?
It's made for TV.
You know what I mean?
If you look at it.
And look at like an old TV guide from like 1949,
50, 51, there is wrestling on every single fucking night on different channels.
And they used to have like Saturday night wrestling.
like in Chicago on the Dumont Channel was like a big fucking deal like people were home to watch that shit it was like the big sporting event so this is when wrestling really became national this is when gorgeous George came out and all these big well-known guys that people still know
um Modo sing to encounter the becker boys mr. moto the one-man torture chamber i'm sure a a uh you know japanese man of some kind because it's post for all war two
teams up with Nanjo Singh, the horrendous Hindu.
We haven't heard that one yet.
Horendus Hindu.
Haven't we?
Maybe not.
Well, not horrendous Hindu, but we've definitely heard them be mentioned as horrendous, right?
Yeah, we've just heard a lot of something Hindu, this Hindu, or that, you know, Bombayan, the Bucksum this.
I haven't heard horrendous Hindu alliteration yet.
They'll be against popular George and Bobby Becker in the main event at the Olympic Auditorium.
Maybe that's L.A.
There's a bunch of Olympic auditoriums, but L.A. was a big one back then.
Moto's sleeper hold is known wherever wrestling is known.
It has been frequently condemned as a thinly masked version of the forbidden stranglehold.
The same applies to Nanjo's cobra hold.
It's certain they plan to use both grips and tonight's tussle.
All right.
One hour time limit.
Three falls.
May 25, 1993.
Harrod Hindu Nanjo Singh makes debut here tonight.
This is Waterloo Region record, so I assume I.
So now he's in Iowa.
He's been booked against Furpo Zabisco.
No relation to Larry, by the way.
The clean-shaven pole with the long mustache.
Okay.
Interesting.
Here we go.
Nanjo was also, now we don't know how true this is, but supposedly he was the reason for the first recognized cage.
match in Canadian history.
Is that right?
Yes, they had cage matches, but they're much different if you looked at it.
It looked like chicken wire back then that they'd have around the ring.
How does he make it a cage match before that?
What do you mean?
Oh, well, he's got to have a thing where there has to be a reason.
Remember I said like he runs away, so you got to keep him in.
Well, this is the fans keep attacking him.
Oh, okay.
So they have a cage match not to keep him in, but to keep the fans out of the ring.
They need a cage here to fight Whipper Billy Watson.
They built up this feud for fucking years now with these two.
They said Nandro was drawing massive crowds in Canada, 12, 15,000 people in the early 50s.
Wow.
Huge.
Even in America as well, in the Northeast, which was at the time Vince McMahon's
territory pre-WF, him and the fuck is his name now.
It's slipping my mind, but he had a partner that did that with.
he was going against
Lou Fez
Don Leo Jonathan
Man Mountain Dean
Pat O'Connor
who's another huge guy
Vern Ganya
who we've talked about a lot
and fucking
all these other big names here
July 6 53
all is gloom
as Nanjo
eyes Yukon Eric
obviously a Canadian man here
yeah
Nanjo
they said
discussing the situation
exclusively with the telegram late Saturday,
Nanjo the Banjo said,
What is the man trying to do to me?
I want Watson and his precious British Empire title.
And what do I get?
You con Eric?
If the smart guys think this is a way to get rid of me,
I'll show them a thing or two they haven't seen yet,
sputtered the sizzling seek.
That's Bushwacker.
That Bushwacker hasn't had many more ears to lose.
Okay.
Singh says he might be advised.
to save his steam for his bout with Yukon here,
with simple straightforwardness of his heritage,
the great alone from which he comes,
he said, quote,
they are all the same to me.
That's what Yukon said.
He just wants to beat him.
Yukon Eric, Matt Victor,
has Singh disqualified for ring post treatment.
Again, put him into the ring post.
That's a disqualification.
Pow, there you go.
August 21st, 1953, the Toronto star,
Nanjo has tantrum like two-year-old.
Oh, he lays on the ground, kicks and screams?
And pisses himself, yeah.
Nanjo Singh is probably the nastiest wrestler
to set foot and maple leaf gardens in many, many years.
Also, according to various applause calculators,
which also measures Bronx cheers.
That's a boo, by the way.
He must be the most hated.
Now comes another most for,
the villain from the shores of the Ganges.
He figures to be one of the most
ungracious losers of all time.
Last night with 11,000
or so looking on at the garden,
now we're up to 11 fucking
thousand. Nanjo
had his bid for the British Empire championship
smothered by one of Whipper Billy
Watson's Canuck Commando
unconscious holds.
And after Bert Maxwell,
the chubby referee lifted our
Wipper's arm to name him Victor,
Nanjo the Banjo staged a
that it would have done a two-year-old just deprived of his rattle credit.
The hairy Hindu, it's a new one, raged about the ring, jumped up and down, and addressed
his grievances to the most unreceptive audience he could find, the crowd.
They merely replied with advice to go back to India and similar suggestions.
Okay, yeah, he just had a, that's a way to look worse for the crowd.
That's all you're looking for.
Okay, here we go.
same thing here.
Only two more days of the
Paddock Tavern.
This is an ad here, Jimmy.
The one and only
Oscar Peterson, Canada's
King of Boogie appearing
nightly. King of Boogie.
Yeah. Matinee,
Saturday afternoon, finest
of foods, air conditioned for your
comfort.
That's right. King of Boogie.
Is he the King of Boogie? Do we know him?
Have we heard of him?
Apparently. King of Boogie.
never heard of him before. Oscar Peterson.
Norm's brother.
March 10th,
1954,
Vern Gagne uses famed claw hold to defeat Singh.
Fucking Vern was using the claw back then.
Interesting.
Vern Gagne recognized as the heavyweight champion of the United States.
This is before he started AWA.
Wow.
This is he was fighting with them and said,
fuck it,
I'll just have my own territory.
I think Wally Carbo started one.
Anyway,
Let's see here. Vern Ganya recognized as the heavyweight champion of the United States
paid his first visit to Canada's capital last night at the auditorium and lived up to his press notice
when he defeated Nanjo Singh in two straight falls. There you go. It was Ganya's famous
claw hold that brought the victory to the Chicago grappler. He applied the Kudagra to Singh in the
second fall after winning the first fall with a drop kick. The opening fall was Singh's best,
lasting all of 12 minutes with the idol of TV millions.
Vern was like a fucking teen idol back then.
Oh, really?
Oh, my God.
He was on TV.
He was a fucking star.
They have...
Everybody loved you.
He did all these commercials for products.
He made up his own, like, you know, weight gain powder for muscles and shit and
and sold that.
He was like the first athlete that used that to sell shit and do things.
He was really smart.
That's why he opened up his own thing.
And being on TV in Chicago.
Chicago every week made him a huge star.
That's what they did here.
So, Vernan, you beat him anyway.
September 7th, 1954, Raqa will be facing Wild Man and Singh.
This must be Antonina Raqa.
Yeah, it's got to be the fucking, the Argentina Raqa.
Yeah, became the first here to, he was kind of did a lot of aerial shit back then, which was new at the time.
He was kind of a groundbreaking guy, Rocka, here.
Okay.
Canadian Army Band Concert.
Let's do it.
They're inviting the citizens of Toronto to the annual Mast Band concert.
Yay.
Okay.
Just come out to the concert.
September 10th.
Mast?
Mast.
Oh, I thought you said Mast.
Mast.
Like they're masked together.
A mass of.
Yeah.
Mast.
I'm like,
Mast.
I said it four seconds ago and then didn't remember saying it.
So not your fault.
I'm a morod.
I didn't understand why the band's wearing a mask.
Why are they?
They're masked bands.
They don't want you to know who they are.
The first one.
September 10th,
1954, Nandoh counted out on the fly.
Counted out.
One of the reasons for his defeat last night at the hands of Antinino,
Argentino, Raka,
was Nanzo's stubborn refusal to recognize the ring as the area for
steer a steer a stie ruggle quote unquote struggle the chief reason was that nangio's weapons were completely
outdated and also antiquated not only that they were also inadequate all 75 customers whilst
cheering raka's victory uh to the rafters wondered aloud that uh that frank proctor promoter frank
tunny wasn't arrested and incarcerated for having the gall to make the match be it said for
Tunney, he blushed as he forced the greenbacks into his vault.
After a desolatory 17 minutes, Rocca hauled off with his drop kicks and booted Nanjo from him,
from him meaning out through the ropes and onto the cold cement.
Since he lit on his head, Nanjo was unhurt, although a few cracks did show in the concrete.
Okay. Climbing back to his feet, he rushed in.
Basically, they're saying that Nanjo's looking old and done at this point.
and Frank Tunney's got a lot of balls even putting him in a fucking match like this
because he looks like shit is what they're saying here,
which he's been wrestling for at least 25 years at this point.
At least.
Yeah, and we don't know how old he is.
No idea how old this man is.
No clue.
Let's see, January 31st, 56, Singh gets a chance for feature billing.
Okay, if Nanjo Singh has the ability to regain main event billing,
matchmaker Pedro Martinez intends to find out quickly.
Martinez has matched the Cobra Hold artist against Ilio de Pollo for Friday nights wrestling
semifinal in the Memorial Auditorium.
The main events, a tag team final between, uh, battle with the Germans, Carl von Schober and
Fritz von Erich.
Oh, that is.
Patriarch of the Von Erick clan, opposing Johnny Barron and Don Beatleman.
Um, February 4th, 1956, Indian deathlock not as effective as a kick in the neck.
is the headline.
The semi-final never got started and was ruled officially in no contest.
The wrestlers were in the ring, but Nanjo Singh tore Ilya DiPaolo's robe to shreds,
then hit the Italian over the head with the ring post, and Muscatto's police dragged Singh to the dressing room.
Okay, April 4th, 1956, not merely a disturber, Nanjo Singh moans.
This is how he's got to be like a, now he's got to kind of,
go from like this monster heel into this like chicken shit heel kind of sort of type of role basically
because he's too old here to be like the craziest guy going um here we go um in other unrelated

Fell asleep or passed out?
Yeah, I wonder.
The car struck a utility pole, snapping it in half.

Uh-huh.
41. No. Right.
Nope.
Your ass.
Yeah, try 58, if he's a day, probably.
was charged with homicide by fist Tuesday.
He punched a man to death?
Or put it up somewhere.
He fisted him to death.
Yeah.
Fatal beating of his 37-year-old wife, Betty.
He beat Betty to death.
He beat a woman to death.
Jesus Christ.
The woman was found early Tuesday,
beaten to death in her second floor apartment
above the tap room at 30-33, Kensington Avenue.
Singh was held for a further hearing today.
Police said Singh told them he went to bed about 11 p.m. Monday, leaving his wife and James Howard, 26, of 2977 Root Street, a part-time bartender to 10 bar.
Mrs. Singh died about midnight, police said.
A search of the house uncovered bloodstained clothing and clumps of human hair, police said.
He yanked her fucking hair out.
Wow.
Police quoted Singh as saying,
may have been committed by robbers
since $600 was missing from the tap room.
He tried to cover this up.
Wow.
Detective's Edward Bondgard and John Reedy said
Singh was questioned as to why he waited
almost three hours before calling a doctor
after finding his wife's body.
Good question.
He found her and just sat around?
Three hours he waited.
Make sure she was dead.
Singh was known in the wrestling circles
as the Hindu with the Cobra Deathlock.
January 23rd, 1958,
fatal beating of wife,
Jails ex-wrestler.
Jesus Christ, held on homicide charges today
whose Betty was her nude body
was found in the apartment in the tap room.
You don't punch a nude woman to death.
That's crazy.
No, no, no, no, no.
How do you punch someone
who's got their tits out?
How are you not more distracted by that?
It seems as though maybe, perhaps,
He beat her and, or whoever was beating her to death tore her clothes off while beating?
Well, let's find out, I guess, right?
This is like, I don't know, Singh, who told detectives he found his wife missing from their bedroom when he awoke Tuesday,
refused to answer questions on the advice of counsel when he was charged formally Tuesday night.
Detective said Mrs. Singh's face was swollen greatly and the trail of blood led from the kitchen to the bathroom where her clothes.
were found.
Yeah.
Police say she was dead 10 hours before her body was discovered.
Not three.
Oh, my God.
And then three more before cops showed up.
Wow.
Detective said blood was found on Singh's clothing, the wrestler who came to the United
States from Pakistan 32 years ago, which is probably true.
Yeah.
32 years ago, because that would be, this is 58, so that would be 26.
That would make sense, because he's in the newspaper being a famous wrestler by 31.
So that makes sense.
But otherwise, it's, wow.
So, hold on, I got a file.
Okay.
So he, he's got a lot of problems here.
He said that, you know, he said he told them he went to bed 11 o'clock and then she was dead.
So he's in jail here.
He told detectives he found his wife missing from their bedroom when he woke up Tuesday and refused to answer any more.
questions, just said, I woke up and she wasn't there.
So that would explain all the time lapse, I think he was trying to do.
So, yeah, trail of blood and all that kind of shit.
$600 missing from a cash register.
Police said a dog owned by the woman was in the kitchen where her body was found and
that a side door leading to the apartment was locked from the inside.
So they didn't come in that way.
Okay, yeah.
February 11, 1958, he faces another charge.
They issued a bench warrant for him.
How the fuck was he not in custody if he was charged with first-degree murder?
Yeah.
They let him out?
They let him go?
They let him go.
He was released on $5,000 bail last Friday in the fatal beating of his wife.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
The warrant charging breach of the peace and disorderly conduct was issued after Sergeant William Hipple and Detective Michael Stanton of the county detective's office said that Singh had made threats.
in a tap room Friday night and became enraged when they talked to him on Saturday.
Singh was charged with the murder of his wife after finding her bruised and beaten body found in the couple's apartment there.
Originally held without bail, he was released under bond after his attorney made an application.
The detective said after his release, he was in a tap room Friday night at Jasper and Orleans streets,
discussing his case and said he would get the guy who was running the police.
Or was running to the police.
So he said, someone told on me and I'm going to get him.
Hippel and Stanton said they cautioned Singh about being under bond and advised him not to, and advised him to move from the neighborhood.
Klingler said he would produce his client for a hearing today.
He denied Singh as threatened anyone.
All right.
Well, sounds like he has here.
Yeah.
Interesting.
Let's see.
February, what the fuck?
Oh, my God.
Plates of DuPont plastic made it.
in one day.
Apparently, they're giving you plastic teeth.
There's an ad for plastic teeth.
Oh.
Plates of DuPont plastic, made in one day.
Teeth extracted, asleep or awake.
Dr. H.N. Shore.
Holy Christ.
And it's got to be dentures, right?
That's not implants.
No, no, plastic.
There's just some kind of plastic teeth.
Who the fuck is plastic teeth?
I never heard of that before.
February 12, 1958, a mental exam ordered for
Nanjo.
He is, he's charged with threatening the state's prime witness against him in his forthcoming trial as well.
So he's got that also.
He was free and now he has to undergo a neuropsychiatric examination.
Now they're saying he's a native of Punjab, India.
No one knows where this fucking guy is from.
Was arrested on that bench warrant.
So there's that.
He had told police, or this witness told police that Singh had threatened
to quote, tear him apart and eat him.
Oh.
The witness that told on him, Singh went to him and told him he was going to tear him apart and eat him.
I'm going to eat that guy.
He told the guy he was going to eat him.
I'm going to eat you for this.
I mean, yeah, tear you apart and eat you.
Tyson tried to say it too.
Yeah, yeah.
But he was going to try to do that with boxing gloves on, which is allowed.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Let's see here.
Sore finger explained.
Okay.
Rugged Western film hero, Clint Walker,
returned Tuesday from a promotional tour of Texas with a sore trigger finger.
Not from shooting, he explained.
Got it from signing autographs.
That's just the thing they put in the paper as a little aside here.
There we go.
I'm getting riders cramps.
Getting riders cramps.
April 8, 1958, ex-wrestler tried in kill.
state may ask for chair.
Here we go.
Electric chair.
Nanjo Singh,
saloon keeper and former professional wrestler,
went on trial in quarter sessions court yesterday,
charged with the fatal beating of his wife, Elizabeth,
Betty, in their second floor apartment last January 20th.
He pleaded not guilty.
By mid-afternoon, three jurors had been selected.
Joseph J. Tarpey, a painter of 559 Fisher's Avenue,
was named Foreman of the jury.
They released the jurors before their evening.
even fucking the trial happens.
So no wonder why you could,
you could, you could buy a jury back then.
You knew where every single juror lived
before the trial starts.
You could go to their house.
Go sit next to this person's house
and intimidate them.
Wow.
By the time the court recessed,
three more had been chosen.
They were Mrs. Lula, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
doesn't matter.
Singh, a native of Pakistan,
claimed he woke up about 9 a.m.
and found his wife unconscious.
The state claimed that he failed to summon
police until two hours later. According to the indictment, Singh beat his wife the night before.
April 9, 1958, depiction of fatal beating here. The mother of Mrs. Betty Singh testified in court
today that Mrs. Singh was so badly beaten last January, she was unable to recognize her daughter
when she went to the morgue to identify the body. Couldn't recognize her daughter.
You know how badly your fucking face has to get beaten for that? Usually that's like a
car accident where someone went through a windshield and flew off a cliff or some shit.
It's like that.
This is a beating with fists.
The mother, Mrs. Mary DePede, was the first witness called by the state in the trial of Nanjo Singh,
260 pound former professional wrestler who's charged with the fatal beating.
Speaking through an interpreter, Mrs. DePi, a native of the Ukraine, said that her daughter's
features were considerably disfigured, but that she finally was able to identify the body
threw a small scar on one of her wrists.
Wow.
Asked why, prior to her visit to the morgue,
she had not seen her daughter for five years.
She pointed a finger dramatically at Singh and said,
he wouldn't let me see her.
Then she broke down crying and had to be assisted from the witness stand.
He's fucked.
It's not going to be good.
No, you can't have mom in court.
Oh, that's sad.
No, no.
When she screamed her testimony,
Or resumed her testimony, Mrs. DePede told of an occasion some seven years ago when her daughter came and stayed with her for two months, exhibiting bad bruises.
She said had been the result of a beating by her husband.
Later, the mother said there was a reconciliation.
The jury of six men and six women with one man and one woman alternate was completed at 220 today.
Okay.
Okay.
Ninety-eight forced to view body, Barman says.
A young bartender who had been hired only three days before Mrs. Betty Singh was beaten to death,
testified that her husband, Nanjo Singh,
had forced him to view the woman's battered body before he reported her unconscious condition to police.
Oh.
Testifying at the trial here, he said that, that insisting, the wrestler was insisting he was in trouble
sought his help, then told him to go on home because apparently he had, quote, no guts.
You're not going to help me dispose of my wife's body? You got no guts.
You gutless fuck.
What, three days of a job doesn't give me some loyalty from you? What the fuck, man?
Wow. Full color pictures of the dead woman's multiple injuries, which Singh is accused of inflicting with fists were shown.
It was considered that this was the first time evidence had so been presented in color, the picture.
The pictures fitted with the testimony of the doctor, a city pathologist, who described the injuries in detail.
Doctor also said through his examination that there was enough alcohol in Mrs. Singh's brain to have made her drunk at the time of her death.
Yeah, she works at a bar and owns one.
The state star witness James Horhorath, he's the guy who was threatened to be eaten, whose home is not far from the bar room.
It was in the apartment upstairs at the Kensington Avenue that she was found beaten.
Hoarth told of hearing sounds of banging upstairs on the night of January 20th at about 8.30 p.m.
After Singh told him he was going to the apartment to eat.
Then later at about 9.30 and then again about 10.30.
So three different beatings, that is.
Right.
Holy shit.
He said it sounded like...
Sustained all day.
Yeah.
This guy said it sounded like...
like somebody was moving furniture around.
About 1130, he testified.
Singh came downstairs and his underclothes
and stood at the end of the bar.
I went over and said,
I went over and he said,
are you my friend?
I'm in trouble.
I think she's dead.
Close up the bar.
Huh?
Close up the bar.
Hoarth went on to relate
how Singh offered him his hand,
got the one customer out of the place,
locked all the doors,
then forced him to go upstairs.
He's the guy who said, I don't want to see this.
He goes, you got no guts.
You got,less fuck.
Oh, man.
So this doctor testifies here a little bit about everything that basically he said Singh told him that his wife was very ill, adding, I think she may be gone.
This is the doctor who arrived, who he was called, who he called in.
April 15, 1958, a detective says Singh confessed.
Oh.
That's what they said.
said. He was permitted to testify after the judge overruled an objection by the defense counsel.
So I guess they took this detective at first into chambers to, I guess he wanted to make sure he believed him, the judge here.
Apparently, he and another county detective went to Singh's tap room last February 7th to investigate a complaint that Singh had threatened a man who'd given the police information concerning Singh's wife.
When we got there, said Hipple, the detective, Singh was ranting and raving and acting like a madman.
His eyes were glazed.
He pounded on the bar with his fist.
But finally, he agreed to go down to City Hall with us.
And on the way down, I asked him, why'd you do it, Joe?
To that, Singh said, how much can you take?
She was drinking a fifth and a half every day.
She went through $50,000 of my money.
I gave her $600.
Wow.
In 1958.
Right.
That's your retirement fund.
That's the rest of your life you can live on that.
I gave her $600 to go to Florida, but I learned she later was in a hotel here with another man.
I didn't need to kill her.
I blacked out.
Typically, I blocked out.
There it is.
It's starting back then.
Now I want to die.
I want to go to the electric chair.
Okay.
The cop then testified Singh told him he could have gotten rid of the bloodstained clothes.
both his wife's and his if he wanted to.
The witness said that Singh admitted lying to detectives when he told them of finding his wife's body the next day.
Okay.
Defense here.
The state rests.
The defense seems to have an uphill battle.
I'm not going to lie to him.
I mean, he's saying he wants the chair.
How do you defend that?
Well, he said that they had a deep abiding love for each other, the husband and wife here,
and that he never laid a single hand on his wife and would never.
Oh.
The first witness was a guy named Edward N's kiss who said he and his wife were quite friendly with the Sings between 50 and 57 during which time he said he never saw bruises or any other marks of violence on Mrs. Singh.
Okay, great.
So he didn't ever beat her up in front of you.
Great.
Wow, amazing.
April 17, 1958, lawyers protest.
in this trial here. Okay, let's find out here. Lawyers protest Mars Singh trial. The trial was interrupted
yesterday after Maximilian Klinger, the defense counsel, objected to a defense witness walking
from the courtroom with a county detective. After the conference, the judge instructed the jury
to disregard the incident and the trial proceeded. The argument arose when patrolman,
Edwin J.
some shit, I don't know,
left with the county detective
Sergeant William Hipple,
patrolman Leopold Brzeinski,
I guess it's the other guy's partner,
the first guy, had just testified
that Hipple tried to instruct him
on his testimony and threatened him
with a charge of consorting with the defense.
So there's a problem here.
That's something.
This cop said that another cop
told him what to say.
And then what do you do?
Consorting with the defense if he didn't say what he said.
Wow.
Interesting.
April 18, 1958, Singh got to testify.
He testifies.
He said he knocked his wife down accidentally when he leaped to grab another man.
That's what happened.
Oh, and she just beat her ass going down.
Yeah.
He sobbed and gestured, as he explained here in his halting English here.
his version of the events
and he's going to let him out right now
and it's going to be heart wrenching.
He's just going to cry.
Anyway, he said at one point
during his hours of testimony,
Singh began swaying back and forth,
then visibly sagged in the witness box.
The judge, who was hearing the case
with a jury of six men and six women,
ordered tip staffs to go
to his aid.
As they did so, the defendant
fell into their arms
the judge ordered to recess.
He fucking was selling.
He acted like he couldn't, he was medically at a problem.
He couldn't take it.
Couldn't take it and literally fell into people's arms and they got him out there.
He's a total wrestler.
This is amazing.
Even on the stand it works.
Later Singh returned to the witness stand and testified he discovered his wife with another man.
He said, I hollered, hey, and I ran and made a leap.
I didn't want him to go.
But he explained with gestures, his wife turned to face him and he hurtled into her
and their heads collided.
He said he then fell on top of his wife and blacked out.
Oh.
That's it.
He said, that's all I know.
I don't know how long I was dazed.
When I came to, I saw blood all over.
One shot to the head makes her disfigured and unrecognizable, apparently.
Defense closes here.
To her closest people.
Yeah.
One shot.
Her mom couldn't recognize her.
That's crazy.
What a head he must have had on him.
Holy shit.
So defense closes.
Here we go.
We're going to the jury.
April 23rd, 1958.
Okay.
Here we go.
The defense counsel claims that they have not produced enough evidence that the Commonwealth had not produced enough evidence to warrant a first-degree murder conviction of Nanjo here.
The judge agreed with defense counsel and said he would instruct.
the jury to disregard that charge.
So this is jury instructions.
No first degree murder.
This will be second at most, basically,
even though he, like, beat her over a course of three hours
and different times and everything else here.
But they're saying, that's what they're saying here.
The principal witness was Dr. Joseph Campbell,
a pathologist who examined the body here.
Campbell testified all the bruises and other injuries
on the woman's body were fresh injuries
so that she didn't, like, fall down the stage.
a week and a half earlier and still having some bruises.
His testimony ended to,
tended to refute a defense contention
that the injuries were suffered in a set to
with a friend Charles Fitzpatrick
nine days before her death.
Two patrolmen called to the saloon
the night of that altercation testified
the only mark they saw on Mrs. Singh at the time
was a bit of dried blood on her upper lip
just under the nose.
So apparently there was some kind of brawl at the bar
as she was involved, then she got punched in the fucking nose.
And she had a little bit of blood under her nose.
That's it.
So that's not here.
Here it is April 24th, 1958.
Jury delivers the verdict.
They deliberated for five hours.
The delivery was marked with confusion and was followed by a demand for a new trial because he's found guilty.
Oh.
Now, the defense attorney contends the judge committed a reversible error.
What did he do?
Well, we'll find out here.
But, yes, second-degree murder is what he is going to do.
They said, yeah, okay.
They said, oh, that's why.
Quiried formally by the court crier, the foreman Joseph J. Tarpey, declared Singh had been found guilty of second-degree murder on one indictment.
Asked about a second indictment, carrying two lesser counts of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter,
Tarpie stood for a moment.
The judge explained the jury would have to make a decision on those counts.
They left, returned in 10 minutes, and declared saying guilty of the lesser counts as well.
The judge is like, that's not how it works.
So prior to delivering this case to the hands of the jurors, he had struck the first-degree murder on there.
So they're like, now you're saying I'm fucking against you.
He wants bail before sentencing.
and the judge says, I don't think so, no.
He's convicted of second-degree murder already?
Yeah, and then threatening a witness.
Yeah, and he wants to go home for a while.
Let me take a break.
I don't want to, you know.
The judge said the court feels responsible for Nanjo Singh.
So, like, we can't have them out there doing shit.
In other unrelated news, 10-cent pie holdup is lemon to thief.
Oh.
Benjamin Lampert, 16, was held in $3,500 bail on a charge of robbing a bakery of a 10-cent pie.
He's charged with using a firearm.
What a fucking idiot.
November the 14th, 1958.
Okay.
It is sentencing time here.
Yeah.
The judge denies a plea for a new trial.
And he's obviously been found guilty.
you, sir, may fuck off.
Four to eight years in prison.
Not 48 years in prison.
Four to eight.
48 months to eight twice.
48 to 96.
Yeah.
Not, wow.
Wow.
God damn.
That is not a lot at all.
Wow.
That's incredible.
That's amazing.
This was the first trial.
in American history where color photographs were presented as evidence to the jury.
Real.
First time.
Yep.
And that he had the goddamn maple leaf garden ring walkway cage matches.
He's really a pioneer.
So it should be noted that a disputed fact from the trial regarded Nanjo's alleged confession.
Court documents show that Hipple, Detective Hipple provided sworn testimony regarding a confession by Nando.
according to Hipple, he and another county detective Michael Stanton went to Singh's tap room to investigate the complaint while he was out on bail.
He said when we got there, he was ranting and raving, acting like a madman, pounding on the bar.
Then they asked him all the shit.
I didn't mean to kill her.
I want to go to the electric chair and all that kind of shit.
So looks like he served most of his sentence, but we don't really know what the fuck he did when exactly he got out of prison.
but he went to Canada after his release
and was contacted by Frank Tunney
to come back to Maple Leaf Gardens
Maple Leaf Wrestling and have a series of matches
against Whipper Billy Watson
in like a nostalgia match
He went to jail, did his time
and went back to work.
He went back to wrestling, which he wasn't even doing
for years when he murdered.
He was running a fucking bar in Philly.
Holy shit.
Okay, April.
15th,
1960s.
Nasty Nanjo
Singh's
corner sparked a
minor riot
in Maple Leaf Garden
last night
with his
second
when he
when his second
elbow
smashed
whipper Billy Watson
and enraged
the crowd.
They surged
again.
Still,
it's 1966.
35 years
of riots
for this
fucking guy.
The police
said William
James
Matthewson
18 has been
charged for
three counts
assaulting police during the heat of the battle, which was a draw, Singh hit under the ring and was
later escorted out by police. That's his fucking jam. Yeah, people were hurt. One officer was
kicked in the stomach, another knocked down and kicked in the head and a third suffered a chip
tooth while trying to protect the ring. September 19th, 1966, again, disqualified in a match
against Whipper Watson there. Again, 1966, October 3rd, he's fighting.
him.
Now, this is
interesting.
I guess, apparently,
there was,
I guess,
a false rumor that
Frank Tunney
basically shook knighted
him out of prison,
came in and bailed him out
to make,
you know,
to make a California fucking,
to go lay down
a fucking verse on California,
whatever the fuck
from Dr. Dre there.
So that's kind of what
what is the rumor here apparently that he needed to redignite the declining territory but there is no evidence of that
seems like more like coincidence he came out of jail needed the work the territory slumping they both got
ideas and said fuck it let's let's do this you know um he competed in a few more bouts in November of
1996 he loses in his last match here
They said it's Bulldog Brower defeated him.
And apparently it was, oh, three, it was Whipper Watson.
Somebody Layton and Bulldog Brower defeated Tiger Singh, Mohan Singh, and Nanjo Singh.
So now he's turned into now that's a six-man tag of Indian guys.
So, yeah, that's what happened there.
Tiger Singh of the runway.
Now, he ended up moving to Calgary.
Oh.
Which I'm not so sure he wasn't Canadian to begin with, by the way.
I think he was Canadian if I had to guess.
It's possible, huh?
We don't know.
But he moved back to Calgary.
He remarried and rebuilt his life at some point.
He ended up having children and grandchildren.
Seemed to turn it all around.
Unbelievable.
Maybe if he wasn't shit-faced pub-owning drunk, maybe.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We are not sure when he died.
We have no idea when he fucking died.
Not sure when he was released.
We don't know what his real name is really.
We know that he existed.
We know he existed.
We know he killed his wife.
And we know he wrestled a lot.
But outside of that, I assume he's dead.
Otherwise, he'd be about 115 years old.
Right.
He's got to be dead.
But we don't really know.
What the fuck?
Can't get enough of Nanjo?
Well, you can get the wrestler magazine, which
There's a big magazine for a while.
The wrestler, April 1967 here, where it says it's the picture that caught a tragic moment in Judy's career.
It's a ladies' wrestling thing.
I think it's Grable there.
Also, Sandy Barr, they threw me to the wolves.
And great girl amateurs are the wildest.
Yeah, they are.
And that's what it says on the front.
And then Nanjo Singh revives Old Blood Feud with Whipper.
And there's a picture of Nanjo on the front, absolutely crimson mask covered in fucking blood.
Covered in blood, which is how they sold those magazines back then.
That's $22.99.
And I'm absolutely going to fucking buy that.
The last one on the bottom is Bruno making too much money.
Bruno San Martino.
1,000% going to buy that.
Also, this is pretty amazing.
A Parkhurst wrestling, 1955 wrestling card of Nanjo Singh.
From when? 55.
55.
I didn't even know they had wrestling cards,
and I know that kind of shit.
It says the product is a 55 Parkhurst wrestling trading card
featuring Nanjo Singh.
It's PSA graded and everything.
Wow.
It's a four.
Yeah.
It's part of the 5556 Parkhurst wrestling set
and is a base variety.
As a collectible item,
it appeals to wrestling fans, blah, blah, blah.
60 bucks for that, which is not bad.
What the fuck, though?
Here's a rare vintage 155.
Buffalo Wrestling Sports Magazine program featuring Nanjo Singh.
There's a crown on the table, and he's got his turban.
It looks like he's taking his turban off, and he's about to put the crown on.
That's what it looks like, how that works there.
That's interesting.
So that's how it goes there.
161.
Oh, yeah, Nanjo Singh.
There's another couple.
We had a mistaken identity of a teacher in Canada named Nanjo Singh, who apparently, there's also an athlete who played for the Calgary Stamp
Peters and qualified for the British Empire Games has nothing to do with this guy, but they have
the same name.
So that is rough.
So there you go, everybody.
There you go.
That's Nanjo Singh, old-timey wrestler, in effect.
Fucking love an old-timey wrestler.
So there you go, everybody.
You've heard some wrestling history and some fun shit.
What a crazy story, too.
He's just shrouded in mystery.
Yeah, and he's a murderer, and he's been arrested.
a shitload of times. I mean, you got arrested tons of times.
Shrouted in mystery. So there you go, everybody. There is Nanjo Singh.

Immediately upon subscription.
Then, when you're binging all of those, you get new ones every other week, one crime in sports, one small town murder.
And you get it all, baby, this week, which you're going to get.
For crime in sports, we talked about worst stadiums of all time.
It was pretty goddamn hilarious, too.
Just the failure of people to, like, fix shit that obviously needs to be fixed.
And it's really, really funny and how mad the fans are.
Then for Small Town Murder, Part 1 of the Donner Party, those are the people who were headed westward and got stuck in the snow in the winter and had to eat each other.
So, well, you know, and there's murder and everything else along the way, too.
So it's a crazy story.
So check that out.
That's patreon.com slash crime in sports.
And on top of that, you get every goddamn show we put out.
Crime and Sports, your stupid opinions, both small-town murders, all ad-free with your Patreon.
And you get a shout out at the...
We're givers.
That's it.
At the end of the show, which is right now, Jimmy, please hit me with the best people in the world who would never, ever, ever beat our faces unrecognizable to our own mothers.
Hit me with them right fucking now.

you're the best.
Thank you so much, everybody.
God damn it, you guys fucking rule.
We appreciate all that you do for us
and all you have done for us
and hung around for 10 goddamn years.
Hope you enjoyed an old-timey wrestler
and some weird stuff from newspapers and shit.
That was a hard one.
I just want to give,
I have to give Ian, my cousin,
who does research for this show,
so fucking much credit
for putting this one together
because this was not easy to put together.
This was one where I sent him this months ago
and was like,
check around, see if you think we can get something.
Put it together.
He basically kept it for like months
picking away,
trying to find more stuff and trying to
try to be able to put this story together
to be able to tell it. So thank you
so much to Ian for really, really
putting, going above and beyond and
doing the extra mile for this one because it was a lot
of fun and we really enjoyed it.
So if you really enjoy it, then you should
definitely find us if you want
on shut up and give me murder.com.
Drop down menus, take you everywhere you want to go.
So keep coming back and seeing us week after
goddamn week and do all that shit
and live from the crime and sports
studios. We will see you next
week, everybody. Bye.
