Starting point is 00:00:12 Hello, everybody, and welcome back to Crime and Sports. Yay! Yay, indeed, Jimmy. Yay, indeed. My name is James Petro Gallo. I'm here with my co-host. I'm Jimmy Wiseman. Thank you, folks, so much for joining us today.
Starting point is 00:00:34 And another absolute, crazy, fun, wild ride. We call Crime and Sports here. We are back with a single episode today after the Robert Roseer series. Hope you enjoyed that. We're going to dive back into baseball today. 90s baseball with a guy who was around. One of those guys, if you watch 90s baseball, you knew him. Sure.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Played for four or five different teams, and he was a decent player. And never knew he had this criminal history, really. And somehow I came across it and I was like, oh, my God, this is amazing for an episode. Terrific. Can't wait for it. He's a quote machine, this guy, which is the best episodes are the guys who say crazy shit that we get to repeat and laugh at over and over again. Guys that can't keep their fucking mouth shut. Oh, I love it.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Personality. That's what the game is missing today is personality. There it is. Pretty much every sport. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody's so buttoned up corporate now. It's fucking gross. It's gross.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Pretty dumb, yeah. Like, even, I'm annoyed right now that with this Chris Johnson thing. I'm sure you've seen the running back Chris Johnson, who had a 2,000 yard season. Yeah, he was an amazing running back. I mean, there was a time when there was. was no better back in the league than Chris Johnson. And did you see what happened to him? He's got ALS.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Right. Really bad. He's got a disease. In like a year, it's progressed to the point where he can't even speak anymore. Really? That's Garrig, right? Yeah, it's Lou Gehrig's disease. He was on Good Morning America or some shit, and he had like a pre-programmed thing where he had he had spoken so he could like speak because he can't speak anymore.
Starting point is 00:02:13 So he could speak in his own voice using pre-recorded. shit that he has. It's crazy. If he didn't think to record it, he doesn't have it. He doesn't have it. Yeah, that's what it is. Because it's all his voice. So he's on there.
Starting point is 00:02:27 He's on shit on ESPN, all this shit. And it pisses me off because he has, he has fucking ALS. And they've made a connection. Like, there's a way higher percentage of NFL players with ALS than the general population. Yeah. Which says there's some. Head injuries. There's something to do with that.
Starting point is 00:02:46 You know, something there that connects that. Not one fucking person has mentioned that. And all the shit I've seen with him on it, all this stuff, nobody's ever, because they're all in business with the fucking NFL. It's gross. The NFL sucks. They really do. They can eat shit.
Starting point is 00:03:03 And fucking, I hope that league fucking crumbles to nothing. I really do. Fuck those people. It's just they don't take the responsibility for what they're doing. It's fine. If you're going to say it's a gladiating. sport and you're going to bash these fucking... Just be honest.
Starting point is 00:03:18 You're going to have such a high... Just be honest. Yeah. Just be honest. Of all kinds of shit. Just be honest. That's all it is. Just be...
Starting point is 00:03:25 I'm not saying they shouldn't have football or it should be illegal or... I'm not saying that. I'm saying these are adults and grown men and I believe that you should make your own choice. As a grown man, as a grown man, if you want to say, yes, I'm willing to put my brain at risk for this and play. Then great. Go ahead and do it. And then when your brain is mush later, I don't want to see it crying.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Because we told you ahead of time. But this now is like... They actively fight against that shit until it's so overwhelming that the public says you have to acknowledge it like with CTE and they still ignore that. No, this is just ridiculous. But ALS, they don't have an actual cause for that at all, right? It's just that's much higher than the general population. And you figure with head injuries, there has to be some correlation to it. That's just something they should mention.
Starting point is 00:04:13 That's all. I figure. It would be a whole thing about it, but just mention. I don't care if you come down with a food allergy. I feel like that's probably caused by playing football. Yeah. If you get hit in the head that much, whatever the fuck is wrong with you, I'm going to check that part first. And then we'll work our way down your body from your brain.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Yeah, I don't care if you're gluten-free. It's probably from getting the shit kicked out of you. Whatever the fuck it is. Exactly. I don't care if you make shitty right-hand turns. You're not good at it. You're too far out of the other lane. Hugging the curb too hard.
Starting point is 00:04:47 It's because a head injury. I'm going to blame it until proven otherwise. I'm blaming that shit on everything. Sorry to get off on that. You probably do the top of the show stuff after we've ranted about the NFL and how shitty they are. You prefer Bud Light over Miller Light. It's probably because you have a head injury. It's a head injury for sure.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yeah. If you like Bud Light at all, it's a head injury. That shit is nasty. So anyway, if you want to know anything about the show, if you want merchandise, tickets to live shows. Shut up and Give Me Murder.com is where you get that stuff all there. We'll be in Milwaukee and Minneapolis, September 18th and 19th for Smalltown Murder. So come out and get your tickets for that.
Starting point is 00:05:27 And then in addition to that, definitely listen to your stupid opinions and small town murder and check out Small Town Murder on Netflix. And also get yourself, Patreon. Do yourself a favor, everybody. Patreon.com slash crime in sports, just like the name of this show. anybody $5 a month or above, that is not going up. That's staying where it is, $5 a month or above. You get everything we put out. I'm talking as soon as you subscribe, you get almost 400 back bonus episodes.

And then every other week you get two new episodes, one crime and sports, one small town murder, and you get it all, everybody. Find a better one, I dare you. Good luck this week, and then there's more to it, even besides the episodes. This week for crime and sports, we're going to be. and do hostage situations part two because part one was just so fun and crazy and we learned a lot actually.
Starting point is 00:06:21 It was interesting. And then for crime or for small town murder, prisoner dating game time, everybody. There it is. We do it a couple times a year. It's always an event and it's a big deal. So get in there and do that. What we do is I'll take four bachelors, four bachelorets. I'll line them up in front of Jimmy.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And the only thing they have in common is they are all violent, incarcerated felons. So that's it. and he's going to have to pick one of each based solely on what they say in their profiles. And then later on we get to find out what they did and exactly how wrong his choices were. And really, there is no good choice. That's the thing. There's no right choice. But there's usually one that seems a little less scummy than the others.
Starting point is 00:07:00 That's basically what it is. So do that. Get in there. Patreon.com slash crime in sports. And you get every damn show we put out your stupid opinion, small town murder crime in sports, all add free with your Patreon. Hey, God, dang. As well. And you get a shout out at the end of the show.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Jimmy will mess your name all up for you. So that said, I think it's time. Let's do this with our kind of asshole of the week here. Jesus Christ, I never knew. I just never knew. It's Derek Bell. You remember Derek Bell? No.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Oh, yes. Yes. If you saw him, you'd remember him. He has like a long head, mustache balding. He played for the Diamondbacks too, right? I think for a minute because he played for the, no, I don't remember him on the Diamondbacks. Blue Jays, yes, for a minute. Padres for a minute.
Starting point is 00:07:46 The Astros is where he was for like five years in the mid-90s. So that's where I remember him the most. Then he was on the Mets for a minute, the Pirates for a second. Yeah. That's it. I'm thinking of somebody else. Was there a Bell in the outfield for the... Derek Bell.
Starting point is 00:08:03 That's him. He's an outfielder. For the Diamondbacks? No, not for the... You're thinking of Jay Bell, the second baseman. Is that... No, there was a... It may have been some...
Starting point is 00:08:12 Jay Bell was on the Diamondbacks in the late 90s. Who was the some bitch in right field? It may have been Derek something else. Oh, that's, so it could be a Derek or a Bell. Now we're really good. That's really. Anybody named Derek or Bell. We're opening it up pretty good here.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Or any other name. Or any other name. Just some guy out that played right field for the Diamondbacks. Oh, my God. That's amazing. So Derek Bell here, he's one of those guys that I always remember from the 90s as looking too old to play baseball, even though he was young. He had like, he was balding and he had like a thin, long head and he had a mustache. And in the 90s, you know what I understand about people, kids now don't get that mustaches are ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:09:05 They don't get how stupid they are and how we're annoyed by them. A bit of hair and the sen of your face is bizarre. We're annoyed by it because we did so much to thwart the mustache, and we finally put the mustache down, and we thought it was down for good. Right in its place. And then here comes a bunch of kids, not realizing the struggle that we went through to rid this world of fucking stupid mustaches. The 70s really gave it its push. Well, put it this. All right.
Starting point is 00:09:31 You got the 50s mustache was like some like scummy salesman would have a mustache. Nobody had a mustache. In the 60s, facial hair became like a rebellious thing. so people would have big mustaches. It was obsolete for the most part, except for the scumbags that wore it to, like, fight back. Then by the 70s, everybody had to have a mustache because you were lame if you didn't have facial hair.
Starting point is 00:09:55 The same reason why people's 50-year-old dads had big butterfly collars all of a sudden. It's just what people did. And then in the 80s, it hit its fucking. Before you go too far to the 80s, the 70s, though, was craft the facial hair. Don't just have a long beard. you look like an asshole.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Yeah, that's the 60s and the 70s. You got to have mutton chops and a mustache. By the 80s, the mustache hit its zenith. Tom Selleck playing Magnum P.I. The mustache, every woman wanted a guy with a mustache. And Bird Reynolds. But it was like the clean cut look with the mustache. That's what they wanted.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Then the 90s came. And we all said, no more mullets and no more fucking mustaches. This is ridiculous. And by the 90s and 2000s, if you had a mustache, You might as well drive a 70s cargo van with blacked out fucking windows and just put, you know, rate mobile on the side of it, basically. Bring me your children, please, a sign. It became, you didn't have a mustache in the 90s. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:10:55 I mean, so much so that it got nicknames of anybody with a mustache had a creepstash. A creep stash, a pito stash. People, I mean, it was literally, I had a fucking joke about being able to pick out mugshots and they'd be like, meth, meth, kid toucher, I see your mustache. What fuck you're trying to hide from? The mustache was a very dead giveaway.
Starting point is 00:11:17 It's a dead giveaway. And then these kids who don't know about this struggle, they came up after this. And they just saw it as like some weird retro thing. And they started wearing mullets and mustaches. And we're like, no. No.
Starting point is 00:11:29 It's like I feel the same way about people with mullets and mustaches as people who are anti-measel shots. We did all of this to get rid of this shit. It's so much work. We did so much to. Get this shitty thing out of society, and you fucking cunts are voluntarily bringing it back. And I don't care if you say it's political. Suck my asshole.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Fuck you. You're dumb. It's not an argument. You're dumb, and that's it. That's the end of the argument. You're in moron. It was guys driving old volvos and drinking craft beer and wearing a shirt. Dushbag college kids.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Ironic. Yeah. Dushbag college kids with a trucker hat on that. We also rid the fucking world of cheap. fucking plastic hats. We said, no, we will not wear those anymore. It has to be a decent quality hat. And you fucking people brought it back.
Starting point is 00:12:18 You've ruined society. We got it to a point where it was better and you fucking ruined it again. You took it and voluntarily. Not too far because those were Wipeed your ass with it. Those came back in the late 90s, didn't they? No.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Only 2000s. Fuck no. Those, that's that. Von Dutch did that shit. That was fucking Ashton Coucher that did. that with that stupid fucking MTV show. He brought back the trucker hack. Perhaps.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Single-handedly that cock-sucker. Well, him and Paris Hill, they were the ones doing it. Yeah, I was, they were the, I'm sure they were hanging out together. Tag teams, yeah. That's what I'm saying. They were in the same VIP section. There was like a douchebag contingent.
Starting point is 00:12:58 And then all of a sudden, if you put that out, what's going to happen next? Here comes the mullet. Next up is the mustache. And it's all over with. It's a fucking slippery slope from trucker hat to mustache. It's something. Is it because the pretend to be rich thing has never quit?
Starting point is 00:13:16 It seems like, look how stupid I look. Isn't this funny? That was a look for a while. Doesn't my hair and face look stupid? It's pretend to be stupid because that rich person looks stupid and I want to pretend that I'm rich. I swear to God, this pretend to be rich thing is such a, it's, that's been a thing forever. That's been a thing since like the, it's got to. to be the 80s really kicked it in.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Yeah, but the 80s really kicked it in modern times. I mean, it's been that way since. In the 70s, it wasn't cool to be rich. People were like, hey, fuck you, rich asshole. The 80s is when it became cool to be rich and material girl and all that horse shit. Yeah. But pretend. And they've been pretending ever since.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Yeah. Pretend. I mean, just live in you is, I don't know, making fun of middle class and broke people is just too much fun. And that's what I guess. I guess. We haven't even said when Derek Bell was born yet. We got to talk about Derek Bell at some point in this episode because we got a lot of shit here. Hi, Derek.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Well, as we'll find out, if you can find Derek, good luck because where do you get to the end of this? Yeah, it's crazy. Oh, wow. Okay. Derek is born December 11, 1968, and he's from Tampa. Being from Tampa, he's going to end up playing, as we'll talk about, on the same little league team as Gary Sheffield. Wow. Yes. And they grew up worshiping.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Every kid in this area worship Doc Gooden. That is... Wow. Because he's from this area and he's Gary Sheffield's uncle and he came out in 84 and was just, I mean, lights out, nastiest motherfucker in the league for three, four years. So they were all worshipping him. Yeah, he's from the Tampa area. His mom's name is Chesteen. I was going to say Christine, but it's Chesteine.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Chastine? Chastine? C-H-E-S-T-I-N-E. Chastine. Big old rat. on her old chestine. Yeah, big-tittied Christine is Chastine. It sounds like...
Starting point is 00:15:14 They saw the baby and they're like, those are going to be huge. Yeah, well, you know what? It sounds like, it sounds like a drawing on the side of a man's 70s van. This is Chastine, and it's like a Viking woman. You know, she's got like Viking horns and huge tits. And the giant cleavage in a corset,
Starting point is 00:15:29 riding a fucking... And it says an airbrushed cursive chestine under it, like in big letters with like sparkles coming off the ends of the thing. So I call this van. This is Justine here. And his dad's name is Jimmy Lee Jackson and Jimmy like you. I.e. So actual boy Jimmy.
Starting point is 00:15:46 Really? Yeah. Jimmy Lee Jackson. Now, Derek Bell here, his parents, a little bit on his background. He didn't give a shit about his dad. His dad died when he was little. And he said he never had a dad, basically. Really?
Starting point is 00:16:02 He said his stepfather he had named Donald, but he said he wasn't really shit either. So, Derek's got to. two half-brothers, I guess. So the stepfather came in and had one of the half-brothers and one was still already around. He said the closest person, the only person close to being my daddy in a real way, was Tom McCraw, the hitting coach in Houston. The Astros hitting coach was closest to being his daddy. He had to wait until his 20s to get a dad? Apparently so.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Well, so did you. That's perfect. Yeah, I mean, I'm familiar, Daddy. But, yeah, I didn't have anybody that was like guiding me professionally. That would have been nice. That would have been good. He basically said that his mother filled any void. He said, quote, I really didn't think of it as not having a dad.
Starting point is 00:16:55 I knew that my mom was always there. The relationship was like sister and brother. That's how she treated me. That's how she brought me up to respect everybody. Okay. Okay. This is interesting. You know, let's do an in their own words.
Starting point is 00:17:11 This is his mother's philosophy. Okay, on parenting. So, well, his quote here, well, I think it needs an in their own words here. Treat your children as equals. That won't fail. Yeah. In their own words, quote, don't be afraid to do anything around me. Let me know what you're doing.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Let me know where you're going. No matter how scared you are, tell me where you're going. Let me know first so I can be aware of it. That helped me develop a great. relationship with her like a brother and sister. That's... What? That isn't at all the way that's supposed to go.
Starting point is 00:17:43 That's so bad. That is not how it's supposed to go. That's maybe why Derek's out of control at some point in his life. Late 60s, I guess. I mean, she was an unwed teenage mother, so they were not that far off in age, which is another thing. They were brother and sister. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:59 She attended college, I guess, at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, where for a year, that's where she met Jimmy Lee Jackson. He was an athlete. He was a quarterback on the football team. So, yeah. Mom Chastine said, quote, I caught a pass from him. Derek was that pass.
Starting point is 00:18:22 He threw me a biscuit. He threw me a down-and-out button-hook jizz pattern. It worked out perfectly. You go over there, button-hook, turn back, and then I'm going to jizz in you. And we'll have a kid. Yeah. What do you say? Okay. One of us went deep. That's for sure.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Oh, for sure. So a few months into her pregnancy, she finished her freshman year, then went back to live with her parents in Tampa and gave birth to Derek in December of 68. And I guess in the years that followed, Chastine and Derek visited Jimmy and Jacksonville during breaks from college, but they never were like a family or anything like that. Just come up and go, here's your kid every once in a while. Cannot get enough of Chastine. No, that chesteen is the greatest name. This is the greatest. I'm telling you. Viking woman.
Starting point is 00:19:11 So, Derek said he knew two things about his father, that he was away at school and that he would always send a big box of toys for Christmas. Oh. For a few years, anyway. He said in 1976, the box never came. That was 75 was the last year of presents. What the fuck? He said, I remember that one day at Christmas, I didn't get anything. I looked in the mail for it.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Yeah, if you're a kid, you're expecting a box of presents, you're checking every day for that shit. If you ordered some sea monkeys from the back of a fucking magazine, you check the mail every goddamn day when you're eight for that shit. Never mind a box of toys. That is fascinating. Oh, man. From dad, too. It's not like, it's not like you, I mean, East Bay catalog. You put the wrong address.
Starting point is 00:19:58 No, no, no, no. This is from dad. He knows where I'm at. Now, dad has a great excuse, though, for not delivering the presents here. Now, number one, he graduated in 1970 with a degree in physical education, his dad. So he actually graduated from college. But 211 West 146 Street in Manhattan, Uptown, that is, he was found dead on April 24, 1976. So he'd been dead for eight months.
Starting point is 00:20:25 That's why he didn't send anything. He didn't even know. He had no idea. His dad was dead. He's already buried, son. Yep. He died from Jesus Christ
Starting point is 00:20:36 He died from two gunshot wounds to the head According to the medical examiner And his hands and lower legs Had been loosely tied Oh no He got murdered He got straight murked In some uptown apartment there
Starting point is 00:20:49 He's up in Harlem Getting fucking something happened The death was ruled a homicide No weapon was recovered from the scene So it wasn't a suicide No You don't tie yourself up And then remove the gun
Starting point is 00:21:00 After you blow your brains out generally Not just a homicide, but an unsolved one. Oh, absolutely. By the time the police found him, he was in a moderate state of decomposition, according to the medical examiner. Someone had to make an identification, and I guess they got Jimmy Lee's sister, Lily, from Jacksonville to come up and identify him. She said, when I looked at his face, I couldn't identify him.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I had to look at his fingers and hands. They called him foot because he had big feet with long toes. When I saw his toes, I said, yep, that's him. him. Wow. Oh, my God. Jesus Christ. She had pleaded with her brother not to move to New York. I guess he moved in 71. She said she had a terrible premonition several days before his death. This is the sister. And to this day, people know very little about what happened. They have no idea. He had done some substitute teaching in the city, but was unemployed when he was killed. So they don't know if he got into some shit or what. For someone to be in your house doing that and It didn't seem like robbery was a thing.
Starting point is 00:22:02 You must have been into something, basically. The sister said she called police several times and asked for any updates about the investigation, but was told no information had been uncovered. And this is also the mid-70s. Crime is rampant. This is- Oh, it's crazy. This is crazy. They got hotel rooms on fire with hookers under the bed. We're trying our best.
Starting point is 00:22:23 So the sister said, we heard it was drug-related, but I don't know. I would bet money. It was drug-related. I bet money. After a closed casket funeral, he was buried in an unmarked grave in Jacksonville. Now, Chastine doesn't learn about this until more than seven months after this happened because she called the family to say, hey, how come fucking Jimmy never sent his son a goddamn box of Christmas shit? The kids out here crying by the fucking mailbox. And they said, oh, well, he's dead.
Starting point is 00:22:53 That's why. Because he can't. He really can't. He is indisposed. So, yeah, she kept the, this is fucked up, by the way. She didn't tell Derek until he was 14. So he thought for all that time that his father just not only didn't care in the normal way that he didn't care, he just sent some Christmas presents, just completely said fuck you and abandon him. Which it's much better to just find out he's dead, mourn for that and get over it than it is to sit there for years thinking your dad doesn't give two fucking.
Starting point is 00:23:28 about you and then finding out he's dead. That's horrible. Now you're mad at everybody. That's how you treat your son. But how do you treat your little brother? Yeah, I think better than this even. Yo. So he, the sister, this is Jimmy's sister, said he was really quiet.
Starting point is 00:23:46 I think he was shocked. He didn't think he was shocked that no one fucking told him in seven years. That would shock me. I'm sure that's devastated, not shocked. No, shit. So they say that, In this article, they say, when Derek speaks of his father, he stares straight ahead with dispassionate eyes. He has no memories to share. He said, he quote, he was in college, so I didn't get a chance to see him. Being that young, I know I had a father and I knew he was in college. Then they said, no, he passed away, and then I was without a dad. This article is from when he goes to the Mets in 2000, so New York is involved. He said, it's ironic that he got killed in New York. Here I am growing up a month.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Mets fan, always wanted to play in New York. When I was in high school, I always wanted to get drafted by the Mets because of Dwight Goulden. Dwight Goulden. He said the whole nine yards. And he said basically that he as he grew up, he knew
Starting point is 00:24:44 of New York is basically the place where Dwight Gooden is really good. And that's it. He said that he would not seek to make contact with anyone who had known his father and that he wasn't interested in learning more about him. He said, quote, my mom has brung me this far.
Starting point is 00:25:00 I don't need to search back. Wow. Now, apparently they look very similar. They say photographs of Jimmy Lee Jackson and Derek are very, they're very similar looking guys. It's how it works, yeah. Sometimes you don't look anything like your dad, you know? Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:25:15 He said he looks just like him. I mean, look at you and your dad. That is crazy. I don't know. You don't see it? I don't think so. I don't know. Really?
Starting point is 00:25:26 I don't know. So the sister said, Derek is the spitting image of my brother. When I see that boy as a grown up, it's like seeing a ghost. Some people look a little like them. Some people, you know. So she said that her brother, Jimmy Lee, was 6-2, 185 pounds and wore a size 12 shoe. And he said, Derek is 6-2-215 and wears a 13. Wow.
Starting point is 00:25:51 He said they've got the same body build. And he said that he picked up his athletic ability and his ability to dress from his father too. Derek is a fashion plate, as we'll find out. Hell yeah. He, ooh, boy, he likes to talk about his clothes. It's funny as shit. Bell said that when he was a boy, Chesteen, this is interesting, chose not to pay an electricity bill on more than one occasion so she could afford to buy him baseball cleats. Now, you'll have to tie them outside where there's light, but once you get in here... You have to take some clothes outside to match them to them.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Yeah, you're not going to know what match. He talked about being chased by dogs in Belmont Heights in Tampa. He said, we never lived in Belmont Heights, but his grandmother did, and she was my sole babysitter. That's what Chastine said. So, yeah. Chastine was working two jobs as a medical records technician. And when Derek was old enough to play baseball, they used the mother's address in the College Hill project. So he would qualify to play in the Belmont Heights.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Little League, which was the best little league, best league in Tampa. Even back then, there was better youth leagues. It's nothing like now with these crazy, ridiculous, expensive travel leagues. I don't know how a poor kid could ever make it in baseball now. I don't under, I don't know how it's possible. Fucking any sport. It is insulting. You could make it like if you're from, like they might go look at you from an island or
Starting point is 00:27:21 something, but if you're, if you're an American kid, I don't know, they don't look at you unless you are in all these crazy AAU programs and these crazy travel leagues and these like... I don't know how anybody can not just afford it, but work a normal job to afford it because the time
Starting point is 00:27:40 that they fucking... Don't ask that you have. Fucking demand. Yeah. It's absurd. It's nothing like it used to be when it comes to that. I was reading Sparky Lyle's book. Sparky Lyle, the Bronx
Starting point is 00:27:56 zoo. It's about the Yankees in 1977. Hilarious. We've talked about it a bunch of times. So in this book, he talks about how he got into the major leagues or he got into baseball. He pitched in high school. Nobody cared. Small town in Pennsylvania. Nobody really gave a shit about him. He was pitching
Starting point is 00:28:11 in some fucking Sunday league. Literally some like... Was like churches or something? Yeah, like some town league that the, you know, adults played in. He was playing in some Sunday league and he struck out like 20 batters and it was in the newspaper. Wow.
Starting point is 00:28:27 The local newspaper. So, like, his dad sent that newspaper article to every major league team, basically, to try to get some interest. And he got a couple of scouts to come look at him after that. And he ended up signing with the Red Sox and then ended up going to the Yankees and a trip. Complete that, but you can't do that now. No. That doesn't exist. They need to have record of you playing from the time you were nine. Well, when he was 11, his slugging percentage was a bit down. So I'm not sure about this. They literally are doing this now. It's crazy. You can't. Just play baseball. It's nuts.
Starting point is 00:28:57 If you had a goddamn news article about it, they'd be like, where's the rest? Yeah, yeah. And also now. Links. I know this from other people, but if you're a kid, if you're like 11 and you're interested in like making a going to college someday to play baseball or play any sport, you have to have to have a super active social media where you constantly post videos of yourself performing and you have to like. Practicing. Acting, yeah, acting like you're a media trained adult already and all this shit.
Starting point is 00:29:29 It's ridiculous. It's so fucking stupid. Unbelievable. We're making little weird robots. So Derek Bell met Gary Sheffield in this league. And now Bell decided that his coach, well, this is fucking funny. His stepdad and was his little league coach. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:49 He said, quote, this is Chastien, quote, he said, mom, you've got to be my coach. He's got so many $20 bills. That's such a 10-year-old, nine-year-old poor kid thing to say. I would have probably said the same thing. He's got so many $20 bills. You love this guy. He's never seen some.
Starting point is 00:30:09 He's got upwards of $20 in his pocket. She said, I said, Derek, $20 ain't that much money. I said it has to be more than money. You know what I mean? After that, she was like, he has to want me to meet him for more than money. So Chastine does meet Donald, and they get married. and have a son named Malcolm. How about that?
Starting point is 00:30:27 So Derek even called his coach dad for a while but decided that that wasn't, it was weird. Yeah. He said, my mom's my mom and my dad. My mom's my mom and my dad. She's two people in one. She's my wife, my mom, my dad. Well, and big sister also. My wife, mom, dad, and big sister.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Wow. She's also my wood shop teacher. Yeah, I'm about to spare out a sentence that is going to explain. a lot later. That is unbelievable. Wow. She said that when she began dating a man, she said, that's going to be your next daddy. And Derek replied, uh-uh, you're my only daddy. Okay. So he began gaining some attention in youth baseball through the Little League World Series, which in 1980 at age 11, Bell and Gary Sheffield's team advanced to the championship game as the U.S. representative where they lost four to three.
Starting point is 00:31:24 to Chinese Taipei. Remember if you watched the Little League World Series back in the day, Chinese Taipei would dominate all the time. So... That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:31:34 I used to watch it every year on ESPN. It was on all time. Him and Sheffield were on the same team. Yeah. If you look at those Little League World Series teams, there's tons of major leaguers
Starting point is 00:31:42 that were on those teams. No shit. Absolutely. The following year in 81, Bell returned to the tournament with the same team where they advanced to the championship game
Starting point is 00:31:51 as the U.S. representative but lost four to two to Chinese Taipei. That's right. So he played high school at C. Leon King in high school in Tampa, where he was a good outfielder. During his senior year in 87, he had a 440 batting average and set a school record with 30 RBI showcasing his power and consistency. And he said, quote, that's all I ever wanted to do, play baseball. I never went to spring games when the major league clubs were down here. I didn't watch many games on TV.
Starting point is 00:32:26 I was just playing all the time year round. I was aware of guys like Dwight Gooden and wanted to be like them. I wanted to make my living playing baseball and support my family. Yeah. So right out of high school, June 1987 is the Major League Baseball draft, everybody. What year? 87. June of 87 is the amateur draft.
Starting point is 00:32:48 Jimmy, number one draft pick, 1987. overall. 87. You might get this one. Is it John L.A.? He was drafted, but I think 82 he was drafted or 81. Yeah, it's been a few years.
Starting point is 00:33:01 Not in football. 87? Yeah. 83, obviously, in football. Is it Konseko? No, he was already a star by 87. Christ, he was 40-40 in 87, I think. I was six.
Starting point is 00:33:12 That was Mark McGuire's rookie year. Was it Mark? No, he was his rookie year in 87. Oh, rookie year? Okay, got it. He was an Olympic guy. It's Ken Griffey Jr. Oh, Griffey was 87?
Starting point is 00:33:26 Yeah, he played in the minors one year, and then he was 89. He was the man. That was it from there. Yeah, I guess that's the fascinating part about the draft for baseball is that they'll draft somebody and you won't see him for several years. Five, six years sometimes. And then they show up and you're like, he's a rookie. And yeah, technically he's a rookie, but he's been in this for years.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Well, if he draft him when he's 17, 18, still, they're only 23. They're still super young. number two, this is what's wild about baseball too, is there are several. I'm talking a shitload of guys in this first round that never even played in the majors. Really? The number two overall draft pick did not make the majors. Mark Merchant for the Pirates. Willie Banks, number three, Mike Harvey, number four.
Starting point is 00:34:11 Jack McDowell, remember Black Jack McDowell? White Sox? Fuck, yeah, White Sox pitcher was really good for a bit. The Yankees got him. He was pitching like shit for. the Yankees getting booed all the time. He got pulled out of a game and gave the fucking crowd the middle finger at Yankee Stadium. He gave the holes, which was very funny. Derek Liliquist, the seventh and eighth pick didn't make it. Kevin Apier was number nine. He's
Starting point is 00:34:34 around forever. Lee Tinsley, Delano DeShields played forever. Bill Spires. Chris Carpenter, pitcher for the Cardinals for a long time. Brian Bowenon was around a long time. Craig Biggio, All of Famer right there, number 22 overall. Wow, and 87? Yep, number 22 overall. Astros too, right? Yeah, he was... Yeah, Astros. He was draft... Was you, you know, drafted?
Starting point is 00:34:56 Yeah, I was drafted there, too. Chris Donald's, John Horton, Pete Harnish. Travis Fryman. I remember for the Tigers, he's there. So there you go. Dave Berba in this whole thing. Terry Schumpert. So there's a lot of...
Starting point is 00:35:11 Not a great draft class, huh? This isn't Albert Bell, number two overall. Pretty good. Ken Griffey Jr. at the top, a bunch of major leagues, it's not bad. Yeah, but if you get Joe Montana and nobody else. That's not really a great job.
Starting point is 00:35:23 Also, baseball, you have to look at the entire draft because guys come from, I mean, Mike Piazza is a 61st round draft pick. Dynamically, he's like a 63rd round draft pick. Like they weren't, nobody thought about. Baseball's really hard to figure out what someone's going to be in a few years, especially coming out of high school. But finally, in the second round with the 49th overall pick, the Toronto Blue Jays choose Derek Bell.
Starting point is 00:35:49 How about that? out of King High School in Tampa. Sending his little ass from Florida to Canada. Go in a goddamn Toronto. So Pete Shorick also in that round. I remember him. Who else? Anybody interesting here?
Starting point is 00:36:02 John VanderWall. All right. That's about it. So he starts his professional career with the St. Catherine's Blue Jays of the rookie level New York Penn League. He batted 264 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI over 74 games. Not bad. St. Catherine is a little. in New York, huh? It's in the New York
Starting point is 00:36:22 Penn League. That might be in Canada, actually. But it would be in that league, maybe, Western New York. I figured it's close to Detroit, so it's probably over there. You're probably right. Possibly. So, 1988 he goes to Class A. Mertle Beach Blue Jays of the South Atlantic League, which that's closer to what he's
Starting point is 00:36:39 used to. He posts a league leading 344 batting average with 12 home runs, 60 ribbyes in 91 games, which is really good. He's a Atlantic League All-Star selection. And late in the season, he gets promoted to AA Knoxville, the Knoxville Smokies of the Southern League.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Yikes, appearing in 14 games of the 250 average. And AA is where the talent is. That's where they store most of the talent for a while. So that's where the real good shit is. In 89, he spends the entire season with AA Knoxville. Hits 242 with 16 home runs and 75 RBI. 1990 promoted to AAA Syracuse, the chiefs of the International League,
Starting point is 00:37:22 where he hit 261 with seven home runs and 56 RBI and 109 games. So 1991, there's an article in the Tampa Bay Times, May 18th, 91, former lion out to become player Jays can't ignore. It's a Tampa story. So they said Derek Bell could have fallen into a deep depression, he said, but instead of creating more problems,
Starting point is 00:37:46 problems. Bell is making the most of a situation he can't control. So he says the former King High School baseball players determined to prove that the Toronto Blue Jays are playing him in the wrong city, Syracuse instead of Toronto. Oh. Yeah, he should be called up. Bell is letting his bat and glove convince the Blue Jays who optioned him to the AAA affiliate two weeks into spring training of their mistake. So he's going to convince them. Bell said, quote, talk is cheap. Any way you look at it.
Starting point is 00:38:15 sure I was disappointed, very disappointed. He said, at first I didn't know what to think when I was set down from the 40-man roster. I thought that was my season to play in the show. Then I mapped out a game plan, one I'm following every inch of the way. I just need to be patient and let everything continue falling into place. They, meaning the Blue Jays, make decisions, not me. But he believes he's only a one phone call away and he's going to be there. He said that some of Bell's Syracuse,
Starting point is 00:38:45 his teammates have told him about trade rumors that they've heard. And he says he doesn't believe them at all. He says, four seasons worth of toiling in Toronto's minor league system have taught him to discount rumors. He said, I don't pay any attention to this trade stuff, rumors or newspaper stories. First of all, I've been hearing them for almost a year. Secondly, the most prominently, and most prominently,
Starting point is 00:39:08 I love this organization and hope my future is with the Blue Jays. It's just a matter of time before I get my chance to play at the next level. I work this hard to get this far, and I'll keep working harder until I get to the top. But yes, I hope it's soon. Says the right things. And four years in the minors is tough. It's getting there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:27 Yeah. This is from the chiefs manager, the Syracuse chiefs. Derek has major league written all over him. Oh. Derek has all the tools and proper attitude to play at the next level, but he still has a few things to work on before getting there. His time, though, will come. So, yeah, he's alternated among three outfield positions, all three while play, all three.
Starting point is 00:39:51 I'll never not think of fucking Gypsy Rose with. That kid is sick. God damn, man. We're just all three. We could hijack this part of the show all the way. Oh, forget about it. We could go forever. That is unbelievable that it just spits that out.
Starting point is 00:40:10 All three is my favorite. In the first five minutes of an interrogation, the kid says, If someone has you where you've had sex with a woman and you said all three, that's pretty amazing. All three. All three. Oh, my God. So Derek said, I'm standing more straight up than last season, much like I did at King during my high school career. But I also hold the bat further back behind my shoulder, coiled and ready.
Starting point is 00:40:36 These seem like minor adjustments, but they brought tremendous improvements. Yeah. And he's ready to go. Can you imagine, James, the first time you had sex you do all three? That's fucking absurd. You wouldn't make it to all three the first time. No fucking way. The first one is where it ends.
Starting point is 00:40:52 The first stop is where everyone's getting off the bus. Put it that way. Everybody off. Stop one. In about ten minutes. This bus route's real short today. Yeah. In about ten minutes, we can definitely take it down the road again.
Starting point is 00:41:10 But the first time, it's... All three? If someone just said you want all three, it would have been over then the first time probably. You wouldn't even have gotten in anywhere, I think, before you were to fucking. Where do you want to start? Start, I'm done. Start. You just offered me anal.
Starting point is 00:41:26 This is crazy. You kidding me? Oh, man. Okay. So they say he's waiting on pitches. He's walking a little bit more and all this type of shit. They say that Derek has obstacles in front of him because the outfield they have in Toronto, Joe Carter, Devon White, Mark Whitten, hard-hitting Mark Whitten.
Starting point is 00:41:47 Glenn Allen Hill, he's the guy who gave Rod the Clogs, by the way. Kenny Williams and Mookiee Wilson, the World Series sister. Well, that's why they won the World Series a couple, two years in a row. Yeah, that makes sense. They were good at that point. Derek said, I can't worry about the guys ahead of me as good as they are, because then they got Dave Winfield, too. Right. Yeah. Toronto has one of the strongest outfields in baseball.
Starting point is 00:42:10 I've learned a lot from those guys and only wished them the best. But at the same time, it's hard to deal with the fact that most of them are young and in the prime of their careers. I love the game of baseball and will continue playing hard until I get my call. So in 1991 with Syracuse, Derek hits 346 with 13 homers and 93 ribbies. He's the International League Most Valuable Player and Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year. Yeah, that's an incredible year. Call me up already. I am ready, I am I still here.
Starting point is 00:42:41 He got a call later in the season, obviously. He'll get the September call up at that point when the minors are over. So in his whole minor league career, he hit 289 in 2049 at Bats, which is pretty damn good. So 1991 is when he gets called up. The 1991 Blue Jays are 91 and 71, first in the ALE East. This is pre-Wild card. So you have to win the division. they do win the division and they go to the ALCS where they lose in five games to Minnesota,
Starting point is 00:43:16 who then had that classic seven game series with the Braves where Jack Morris, pitch game seven, 10 innings or whatever and all that shit. So that was interesting. So anyway, that's Roberto Alamar, Pat Borders, Tom Candiotti, Joe Carter, looking at this line, Kelly Gruber. I don't remember him, Tom Hanky, Glenn Allen Hill. I don't think so. No, no.
Starting point is 00:43:39 Tom Hanky was nasty on RBI baseball for Nintendo. He was fucking nasty on that game. Pat Hank and Glenn Allen Hill, Jimmy Key, lefty, nasty pitcher. Manuel Lee, L. Leiter, again, good pitcher. Candy Maldonado. John Olerud, young John Olerud, 22 there.
Starting point is 00:43:58 Cory Snyder. Corey Snyder got him from the Indians. Ed Sprague, Dave Stebe with his big mustache. He's like an old man. This team lost. This team lost to Minnesota, but they went to the ALCS. Todd Stod. Battlemeier Young, Pat Tabler, who shout out to my cousin, who we have an ongoing Pat Tabler joke.
Starting point is 00:44:16 David Weathers, David Wells, a young David Wells for future perfect game throwing Yankee star David Wells, Devon White. So this is a good team. Great team. Made his major league debut on June 28, 1991, so he didn't get a September call-up. Started in left field for the Blue Jays against the Mariners, where he went 0 for 3 with a walk. Oops. That's all right. 91 though he only played in 18 games had 35 played appearances hit 143 so not great but
Starting point is 00:44:46 there's not a lot yeah not a lot of appearances no chance to get a rhythm nothing going rookies have a hard time coming off the bench and doing that it's hard that's a veteran thing when you see those really good pinch hitters they're usually guys were 38 yeah they know how to they're already in the game this kid is yeah it's so easy to get this kid off a rhythm because he doesn't even have one. Well, yeah, generally a guy who comes in kind of, it takes a lot of experience to be able to come in in situations and play well. That's really an experienced player's domain. 92, they are 96 and 66 this year.
Starting point is 00:45:25 First in the AL East, the Blue Jays, they win the ALCS four to two over Oakland. That is the last little, little tiny, just, eh, little eke of Oakland. and then now they're shit after that. This is coming off their kind of dynasty Oakland teams there, which they really didn't get the championships they should have. The Dodgers beat them, the Reds beat them. Yeah. They all just kind of dispersed throughout the league after that, right?
Starting point is 00:45:51 Yeah, they sold the team. That's why nobody, they cut that fucking payroll down to shit, and they got rid of every. The only guy they kept was McGuire until 96 or whatever, seven, and they traded him to St. Louis. So then they beat the Braves four to two in the World Series. So this is the, I believe, no, this isn't. That's the next year against the Phillies is the Joe Carter walk off,
Starting point is 00:46:12 because that's Mitch Williams throwing that. Okay. So they win the World Series this year, pretty much the same team, add a couple of guys here and there. Dave Winfield being one of them, a big one, even at 40 years old. He was fifth and MVP voting that year, Dave Winfield at 40. So it's a big ad. Now, Derek wins the starting left fielder job during spring training and played in 61 games, even though he had an injury, but sidelined him a little bit that year.
Starting point is 00:46:40 So he had two homers one day here in March of 92. This is for spring training before the season, basically. This is, they called him, you know, baseball America's minor league player of the year, hit two homers on Monday. His secret is, quote, I just relaxed and tried to be Derek. He doesn't even have a spot on the team. He's already talking about himself. the third person. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:47:08 It's going to be Derek, man. Yep. So he broke his hand. That's the problem. He broke his hand in April, and they needed him back. And they said, after a closer look, this is from a newspaper article, revealed that it wasn't an imposter in Derek Bell's uniform,
Starting point is 00:47:25 the visitor sought batting coach Larry Hissel, who happened to be standing behind the cage for an explanation. Well, I'll start from the beginning here. The way Candy Maldonado is hitting these days, hit in 132, Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston would probably welcome another outfielder. So they're talking about Derek Bell. A Skydome visitor did a double take when he saw number 14 whacking line drives and batting practice prior to Wednesday night's game. And they said it wasn't an imposter in Derek Bell's uniform.
Starting point is 00:47:55 They said that his left hand was heavily bandaged. And they said it's a shock bandage. But he said he's still hitting. He said, he approached me today asking to swing, the hitting coach said. He told me he had permission. He said, well, Derek is a truthful person. It seemed like only yesterday he had surgery, so I wasn't sure. So I guess he broke it on April 10th, the day after he broke the bone,
Starting point is 00:48:23 fouling a Frank Tanana pitch off of himself here. They said they asked, the hitting coach asked around to see if, is he really allowed to hit? And the hitting coach said, I'm in awe of the strides he's made this quickly. But knowing Derek, I shouldn't be surprised. He wants to play. He's a good athlete. So, yeah. So I guess a lot of teams tried to trade for him over the winter, but they wouldn't trade.
Starting point is 00:48:49 They talk about, is he a complete player? Can he hit home runs as well as a lot of doubles and things like that? And the hitting coach said eventually, yes. but more importantly he has the potential to become a complete player a player who can score runs drive in runs hit for average steal bases he has the ability to do all of these which the modern game now only one of those things counts yeah hitting for power that's it the only thing they give a shit about there's no anything about average stealing bases anything that makes the game exciting they've completely taken that off and made it look like two college kids playing a video game now fucking stupid and and those and hope that A base hit is the least exciting thing ever now. Yeah, they're like, oh, it's not a home run. They're pissed off. It's garbage to them.
Starting point is 00:49:40 So anyway, Bell said he'll be ready to go, is what he said. He's ahead of schedule. And, you know, the coach said right now he's ahead of schedule. You don't want to give him a setback and all that kind of thing. Now, late in the 92 season, this is a classic, classic, classic sports. pranks here. You may have seen this because they'll show it every once in a while, like these pages on social media, you'll put it up because it's fucking hilarious. He's a rookie, essentially, so they're playing a trick on him. And the trick is Joe Carter, okay, now Joe Carter's a team
Starting point is 00:50:18 veteran and one of the leaders of the team with Dave Winfield, who is not only the leader of the team, but also fucking Dave Winfield. I mean, he's everyone's looks up to Dave Winfield. They drive Derek Bell's SUV out onto the field before the game. Yeah. Somebody went, got his keys, went out in the parking lot, drove it, and these two drove it
Starting point is 00:50:39 onto the field waving at the crowd and had the Skydome public address announcer announced that this vehicle's going to be given away to a lucky fan. And the look on Derek's face is the funniest fucking thing you'll ever see because he's in the dugout doing his thing and you see a guy like hit him
Starting point is 00:50:58 and point. and he looks up and his whole face just like drops, drains, his eyes. Like, he can't run out on the field and, like, jump on the hood. Yeah. So he's got to play this. It's a very specific car. When you see it, it is not a replica. It is his fucking car, obviously.
Starting point is 00:51:18 And they're waving, smiling. He's just standing there, and the PA announcer announced the winning seat. Winning seat number of the fan. It's a fake seat number that doesn't exist. because this is a joke. He doesn't know that. Yeah, and they didn't tell him about it until right before the game.
Starting point is 00:51:36 They were like, dude, it was a fucking joke, by the way. Ha, ha, got you. But the look on his face is amazing. Now, who knows if he's like got a gun in the glove compartment or some shit? We have no idea what he's got going on in there. But it's hilarious. Anything that's in that car. There could be a host of things.
Starting point is 00:51:55 And you carry out and be like, fuck you, Dave Winfield. Like, you can't do that. if you're a rookie. Like, you just have to take it. So he just took it. It is hilarious. Yeah, definitely look that up. So October 5th, 1992, he's plunked twice in some payback.
Starting point is 00:52:13 He got hit in the same game twice in three innings. And they said that it was probably because of his celebratory slide into home plate Saturday following the division clincher. Didn't have to slide and he still did it? Yes, just for fun. or perhaps the rookie outfielders towel waving and fist pumping display from the dugout. So when you have numerous reasons for them to drill you, that's what's happened. If you play with joy, God forbid, you'll get plunked by some. But it's the, it's the unwritten rules.
Starting point is 00:52:45 It's the unwritten rule. Yeah. Unwritten rules, though, usually apply to home runs. Generally, yeah. They usually apply to staring at home runs, not. If they hit a, they hit a ball to the, the wall and you're on third. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:53:02 You could literally crawl in and you're going to dance on them. That's not very cool, right? It's to win the division. Yeah, I think I'd slide too. I think I'm getting dirty, man. That's, yeah. We'll put it this way. If Ricky Henderson did that, nobody's plunking him.
Starting point is 00:53:18 Yeah. He's a rookie. That's why he got plunked. And that's another thing with sports, too, is they do a lot is rookies aren't allowed to be humans the same way other people are. It's weird. Weird. basketball, too, if you're up fucking 25 points and there's two seconds left and you run down and dunk it, you look like a fucking dickhead.
Starting point is 00:53:36 You look like a dickhead. Yeah, you do. Well, nowadays, you look, no one even pays attention. You look fine. But back in the day, that would have got you clothesline the next time you go to the rack in the next game you play. Yeah. So he said the second one, I don't think was intentional. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:49 He got hit by two. He said, but I don't know about the first one. I saw one of their players waving a towel in the dugout. So that means they were trying to show them up. Shut the fuck up. Same thing. Pedro Martinez always waving towels, pumping, yelling shit in the dugout.
Starting point is 00:54:04 Anybody going after him? No. Veteran, All-Star, he can do what he wants. So I guess he got hitting the hip in the first pitch of the game, and then he got plunked him again in the third inning. Oh, so. The same game. Derek said, I don't have any hard feelings toward Derek Bell,
Starting point is 00:54:21 the pitcher said. I was wild as can be. I almost hit out a couple other guys as well. That's to be expected when you haven't pitched in a while. That's what the pitchers. that against him. So this year, Derek plays in 61 games. He has a 161 official at bats. He hits 242. He hits two homers, 15 ribbies. Not bad. 678 OPS. Not too terrible. So he contributed to the World Series Championship as well. He had three played appearances in four games. Didn't
Starting point is 00:54:50 do anything really, but he had two walks. So not bad. He made 112,500 bucks for that year. Not bad. great for 1992 for, you know, being 23 years old. That's awesome. March 4th, 1993. He makes no apologies for his antics. This is the next spring training here. He's had a he's pumped up. So they said a film crew came to camp yesterday to shoot a new video starring the Dorf. Oh, yeah. If you don't, if you don't remember, that is Tim Conway, the old man comedian, pretending to be a, dwarf in a on the golf course? It's incredibly
Starting point is 00:55:32 weirdest looking thing ever. It's incredibly insensitive. It's fucked up. It's not even insensitive. It's just stupid. I don't even know if it's, I don't know if it's insensitive or not. I'm taking stupid first
Starting point is 00:55:42 and then we can go to anything else that goes after it. It's dumb hacking shit. He basically was a dwarf that just fell down all the time. That's it. And he's not a dwarf, the guy.
Starting point is 00:55:52 He's on his knees. So if you grew up in the like late 80s and 90s and watch TV past the hour of 10 o'clock, you've seen 7,000 commercials for Dorf on golf. That was the big one, Dorf on golf. Dorf on this, door on that. It's also not just late night. It was mad early on Sunday, like 5 a.m.
Starting point is 00:56:15 Between 5 and 6 a.m. Yeah. A lot of Dorf there. It was just the off hours of sports. It was all Dorf. When you could get cheap commercial air time. And from what I understand, he made like $100 million.
Starting point is 00:56:28 He was selling him for 50 bucks a pop those videos, and they were hugely popular. That's incredibly amazing. We didn't get it. In Middle America, they fucking ate that shit up. All the old people who loved Tim Conway from back in the day, they ate it up. He made a fortune. So they say, no, this is not a Hollywood production of the Derek Bell story, but the decidedly Dorfish outfielder did find himself recruited to appear in a cameo role.
Starting point is 00:56:54 Call it typecasting. The Dorf, for those of you bringing up the rear on contemporary entertainment, is a pixelated jock character created by Tim Conway and who says there's no life after primetime cancellation. Bell, perhaps sowing the seeds for a post-baseball career, acquitted himself well enough, requiring fewer takes than general manager Pat Gillick, another Dorf walk-on, who kept losing his hat in the wind during filming. Bell said, I'll do anything for fun. And then it says, you will recall some images of the funster Blue Jay from last year. Derek Bell mugging for the cameras in the dugout. Derek Bell bounding onto the field and sliding into home plate after the Blue Jays clinched the division. So it wasn't even during the game.
Starting point is 00:57:39 It was this post-game celebration you're mad at him for. Derek Bell leading the mischievous charge on Dave Steeb's locker later for which he apologized. Derek Bell directing the festivities in the clubhouse after the J-Gee. and won the American League playoffs. A year ago, Bell's boyish antics were amusing. By last October, they had become tiresome. Rookies aren't supposed to be this flamboyant. Wow.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Especially rookies who lose their starting job. But Derek Bell made no apologies. Frankly, he doesn't see that there's anything to apologize about. He said, quote, I'm going to go out there and be Derek Bell, just like I always have. That's just the way my mama taught me. That's the way my mama sister taught me always. My mama, mama, sister. My mama said, she said, just be yourself, Derek.
Starting point is 00:58:32 There were reports last season that the irrepressible bell had been taken aside by some of his older teammates and advised to cool his jets. That's not how he remembers it, though. He said, quote, Dave Winfield told me once that he wished he could have had as much fun as me when he was younger. That's just the stuff you guys make up and put in the paper. The paper goes on to say he removes his designer shades and waggles them at a reporter as if to make an important point. Quote, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me. Oh, boy. And he said that this is just, he's having fun.
Starting point is 00:59:08 He said, a lot of my friends got shot or ended up in jail. He says, but not me. He said, I've always been this way, smiling and talking trash, sliding into home plate. Gee, I used to do that when we won games in Little League. Why should I change? everybody around here likes my enthusiasm. Isn't that better than if I were mean all the time and never smiled at anybody? Yes, I would say.
Starting point is 00:59:30 The general manager said, he's a good kid, and I don't want to stifle his enthusiasm, but I think he's starting to learn that there are situations where you have to control yourself where you have to concentrate on the job you're supposed to be doing. It's just a matter of channeling that enthusiasm. That's all it is. He said it's more for him to lose, but it's still a, They're talking about a starting job. Okay.
Starting point is 00:59:52 March 29th, 1993. So this is three weeks later. Wow. This is in the Toronto Star. Gaston loses cool over Bell. That's the Cito Gaston, the manager. He said his patience with outfielder Derek Bell has been worn raw. He said...
Starting point is 01:00:12 Ready? Yeah. Jesus. During the Blue Jays 11 to 2 spring training went over the Tigers, Bell took a lazy approach to a fly ball that fell in for a hit. Later, he doubled off second base. He was doubled off second base on a routine pop-up to third. Jesus Christ, talk about not paying attention.
Starting point is 01:00:29 He didn't have too good a day out there, Gaston said, you can't play like that. He said it was Bell's failure to get back to second in time that really pissed him off here. He said, the fact that the Blue Jays had a big lead didn't mean anything. He said, just think how many times that's happened to him. far too many times. He said he's got to take charge of his own life and his game.
Starting point is 01:00:52 I think sometimes he gets too caught up and looking good. Oh, sunglasses and shit. Yep. He said, big leaguers call Bell's type of behavior on the field styling. He says, you have to think about styling. How can you think about styling when you should be thinking about playing? And so Cedar Bass and said, yeah, he said, we've got a pretty good AAA outfielder, a AAA kid named Butler, he said.
Starting point is 01:01:17 referring to Rob Butler. He says, so, you know, we could get somebody else in here, no problem, is what he's saying. He also said, they said, what about moving people around and all that kind of thing? He said, we could do that too. Basically, he's just pissed off. That's all there is to it. He said, you can't play like that up here in the major leagues. Soft profile.
Starting point is 01:01:39 He said, I will probably speak to him when I'm good and ready, the manager said. Too angry to talk to him. Can't do it right now. I'll say something I don't mean. Two days later. Yeah. March 30th, 1993, he is traded. Already gone.
Starting point is 01:01:56 Two days after the manager said, I've had it. It's over. Yep. I guess they traded him to the San Diego Padres, along with a minor leaguer named Stony Briggs in exchange for outfielder Darren Jackson. And Bell says in this article, No regrets, but I'm confused, basically.
Starting point is 01:02:15 Oh. He said, I don't get it. He said he doesn't think Sunday's brain burp on the basis, getting doubled off second on a pop-up. He said, that didn't lead to his trade. He said, I got no animosity towards Cito. He's a great manager. What do you mean he was pissed off?
Starting point is 01:02:32 He didn't even know the guy was mad at him. Oh, he was mad at me? I didn't know. Cito decided to trade him instead of yell at him. Fuck it. He said, he was like everyone else in the organization, treated me well, right from the minor leagues to the big leagues. They taught me what I needed to know.
Starting point is 01:02:46 I want to thank all of them. They said, do you know why you were traded? And he said, that's too tough to answer. I didn't ask any questions. Why would I? I'm not there anymore. Yeah. He said, no regrets.
Starting point is 01:02:59 None. And he said, what do you mean? They said, do you have regrets? He said, no regrets. What do you mean by regrets? He said, I had fun there. The organization treated me well, gave me a chance to win a world series. I'll miss them, but it was time to move on.
Starting point is 01:03:11 Sure. And he said that he also is happy because he's going to be reunited in San Diego. with his two best buddies who are Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff. And McGriff. Crime dog in there too. So he said, yep, back with my fellas. Shep and McGriff, my homeboys, the big league, San Diego. Never been there, but I know it's in the big leagues, all right?
Starting point is 01:03:35 Never been to San Diego. He never even played him, huh? Oh, yeah, there's no interleague. Yeah, there's no interleague. He said, I got to call my mom, go pack and get on the airplane. He also said the first thing he had to do was settle some card playing debts. So he left an envelope for Pat Hankin and another for David Wells. So he said that, you know, he owed money on poker games.
Starting point is 01:03:58 That's what you got to do. So at least he's honorable with that shit. He follows up. That's good. April 1st, 1993, he's with the new team and talking about himself in the third person again. Uh-oh. Yeah. So he said, right before the game, Cito called me off and said,
Starting point is 01:04:14 hey, we decided to make a change and we're going to send you to San Diego. I was like, yeah. I jumped up, packed my clothes real quick, got them in the car, drove home, packed my stuff up, got to the airport quick as I don't know what, got on the plane and got out of there before anybody changed their mind. Truth is it doesn't sound like that was going to happen, at least not on Toronto's part. Okay, it didn't sound like it. This is the newspaper article. Gaston intimated that Bell doesn't take things seriously enough and he has to grow up. Bell simply doesn't agree. this is Derek Bell quote
Starting point is 01:04:46 people misunderstand that Derek Bell this is him speaking by the way he's gone full crazy Ricky Henderson had to steal like a thousand bases
Starting point is 01:04:56 before he could get away with that shit you know people misunderstand that Derek Bell is a guy that's going to go out and enjoy playing the game
Starting point is 01:05:04 because he worked so hard since he was eight years old right see Derek Bell back there somewhere behind me since he I mean I He wanting to be a big league ball player.
Starting point is 01:05:17 He said that. He said that. He said Derek Bell and he a bunch of times. He has lost his fucking mind. He said, now that I'm here, I just want to have fun. Oh, that's good. He went back to that. That's excellent.
Starting point is 01:05:29 He said, I know Cito Gaston said, I know I've talked to him in the past, but he's got to take charge of his own life and do what's right. So, anyway, Derek Bell said, if I get criticized for trying to show, Well, everybody wears a wristband or two wristbands. I've got an earring in my ear, but everybody wears earrings now, even kids at school. So I don't see where I'm showboating. Everybody wears Oakley's in the outfield. I want to know where I'm showboating, you know. That's what I want to know.
Starting point is 01:05:58 I call a showboat, a guy wearing two wristbands, earrings and wristbands on his ankles, and he hits ground balls and jogs to first. That's what I would call a showboat. And he said he'd never do that. Showboat. That sounds like a male cheerleader. It sounds like every guy in the 90s playing the outfield. It's a lot of wristbands. A couple of wristbands.
Starting point is 01:06:20 He said, that's what I don't understand. That became popular in the 90s. Guys were wearing shitloads of wristbands. And had bands. And had bands. That's what I don't understand. That's what hurts me. Whoever said that and criticized me like that.
Starting point is 01:06:31 I work hard. I take ground balls every day. I run every ball out. I mean every ball. I don't care if both my hamstrings are sore. I'll blow them out before I jog down that first baseline. I've never been a guy that's lackadaisical. All right.
Starting point is 01:06:45 And he said, they're going to play him in center field there. And he said, I'm a natural center fielder. I have a chance to show my range now that I'm back in center field. And he said he's happy to be with McGriff. And with Sheffield, he said, last year, Sheffield was chasing the triple crown and McGriff won the home run title. And he said, I talked about it in the clubhouse every day. That's all I talked about.
Starting point is 01:07:06 See what Sheffield did? Did you watch ESPN? You see what Fred did? I was always talking about those guys. guys and I was just telling my mom, man, it would be awesome if I could play with those guys. Here he is. 93 Padres. I hope he's having fun with his friends because he's not having any fun in the fucking field. No?
Starting point is 01:07:23 He goes from a World Series champion and this year the Blue Jays are going to win again. Right? Then they beat the, no, they beat the Phillies the first time. Okay, yeah. The Padres are 61 and 101 this year. They lose a hundred fucking games. That is brutal. They suck this year.
Starting point is 01:07:43 Yeah, they were, they were not good for quite some time, too. Oh, they were kind of a joke. They were a joke. 84, they were good, went to the World Series. 98, they were good, went to the World Series. Everything in between there was a shit show for the Padres. So this is, oh, fucking Billy Bean is on this team. I believe that's, no, that can't be the same Billy Bean as the general manager.
Starting point is 01:08:07 Is this the end of his career? Yeah, batted left. Yeah, I think that's the guy. I think that's a 6-foot 185. I think that's Billy Bean, the Moneyball guy. Because there's another Billy Bean, too. So that's the thing. And they're around the same age, so it's confusing.
Starting point is 01:08:21 Anyway, Derek Bell, Andy Benez, remember him from the Diamondbacks, Andy Ashby, Mark Davis, the pitcher, I remember him. A bunch of guys, Tony Gwyn, obviously. I'm trying to find guys people have heard of. Trevor Hoffman, 25, Bruce Hurst, old Pedro Martinez at 24. on this team let's see here Roger Mason
Starting point is 01:08:46 Tim Mouser Fred McGriff obviously there Phil Nevin I remember him oh no that's not him that's a different guy
Starting point is 01:08:54 okay he came later Gary Sheffield yeah okay there's the team and Wally Whitehurst so this year he plays in 150 games
Starting point is 01:09:03 now we're talking 542 at bats he hits 262 with 21 homers 72 RBI's, 26 stolen bases. Oh. And a 720 OPS. So does pretty goddamn well for himself this year, especially for his first full year playing.
Starting point is 01:09:20 That's goddamn good. He makes $165,000 that year. Die. 94 Padres. They finish, this is the strike shortened season. And for them it was merciful because they sucked again, 47 and 70 this year. Yeah. Somehow Jim Riggleman makes it through these years as manager.
Starting point is 01:09:39 They go 61 and 101, no firing. They go 47 and 70. Still here. Jesus Christ, you got to be kidding me, man. That's wild. April 27, 1994. This is when something happens, though. Again, merciful that this season just came to an end.
Starting point is 01:09:58 Here we go. Two San Diego Padres players are arrested Tuesday for propositioning undercover policewoman on a Manhattan Street corner, often frequented by prostitutes. Oh, boy. Pitcher Scott Sanders and outfielder Derek Bell were arrested around 1 a.m. on a misdemeanor charge of patronizing a prostitute.
Starting point is 01:10:20 Shit. The arrests came 18 hours before they were due at Shea Stadium to play the Mets. Wow. Unfucking believable. Sanders and Bell, who was wearing the World Series ring he won with the Blue Jays. What? He was wearing his World Series ring. was getting a prostitute at one o'clock in the morning.
Starting point is 01:10:42 Why? Back then, are you worried about getting rolled, bro? This is still like New York, New York, like when the shit was like... He's trying to impress her? I guess, hey, listen, you don't need that to impress her. No, you need cash. You could have said, look how many 20s he has, and she would have went, where? That's the guy.
Starting point is 01:11:02 That's the, yeah, that's the ringer right there. Oh, man. So he said that he appeared, Derek Bell appeared, shocked and bewildered Captain Michael O'Neill of the Public Morals Unit, which should never exist. Public morals, who cares? They told me they were baseball players and I told them they were under arrest, he said. We're baseball players. That's nice. You're under arrest. They pleaded innocent. They turned down a deal, which would have had them plead guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and do one day of community service. spend a day in a health seminar and pay $45 in fees and fines and were released on their own recognizance due back in court June 17th. Wow.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Their lawyer said there was no sex, no money exchanged hands. There's only allegations. Okay. Listen, I've been out on the street late at night. If you are talking to a lady of the night, you know that's a, you're asking to be arrested for solicitation. You don't do that. You would avoid those women like the plague unless you want a blowjob for $30 or to be arrested, one of the two. No other reason to talk to them.
Starting point is 01:12:13 Who are you talking to? Why are you talking? I was just worried the lady might need some assistance. That's all. We were offering her if I could lay my jacket across a puddle for her. That's not what's going on at 1 o'clock in the morning. Fuck him in Manhattan. No sex because they got arrested before it happened.
Starting point is 01:12:29 That's why. Right. Most of the other suspects picked up in the anti-prostitution. sweep that netted players took a plea bargain, which is offered to first-time offenders. That has a name. I think it's Operation Shutdown, they call that later on, this whole thing that went on here. Bell and Sanders are both 25 and single, although Sanders is engaged. Ouch.
Starting point is 01:12:51 Not anymore. That's going to be a rough one, man. Oh, wow. May 7, 1994, National League suspends Derek Bell for five games for charging Exposos pitcher Pedro Martinez. By the way, that other pitcher wasn't Pedro Martinez. That was a joke. He was still with the Expos.
Starting point is 01:13:12 He charged Pedro Martinez and incited a bench-clearing brawl during their April 30th game. Didn't get suspended for solicitation of prostitution, get suspended for trying to beat up Pedro Martinez. He appealed his suspension and he will continue to play. He's also fined. In the same article connected to it, English jockey killed in race pile up. What? Yeah. British jockey Steve Wood, 26, was killed Friday when he was kicked during a three-horse pile up.
Starting point is 01:13:43 Shit. At Lingfield Park. Wood died of massive internal chest injuries sustained in the running of the Moorheen handicapped. He was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics tried to resuscitate him. Holy shit. Horse kicked his ass to death. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 01:13:59 So Derek this year plays in 108 games, 434. at Bats, hits 311 with 14 homers, 54 ribbyes, 24 steals, and an 808 OPS. So getting better. Makes $385,000. He had prostitute money. They also get the charges dropped against them on October of 1994. They dropped the charges. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:26 Not enough. It doesn't matter. December 29th, 1994, Derek is moving again. He is on the road being traded from the Padres to the Houston Astros in the biggest trade in baseball in 37 years. Really? Twelve players involved in it. Who? This sends Ken Kamenity, Phil Plantier, Steve Finley, and Derek Bell.
Starting point is 01:14:52 It's involving all these people. Houston sends Kamenity and Finley, who turned into a great center fielder for them. Finley was one of the most underrated defensive center fielder's I've ever seen. That motherfucker got to everything. If he was playing a team you hated, you were like this little cock sucker with this curly mullet. I want to fucking punch him in the nose. Did he play for the Diamondbacks too? Fuck yeah, for you ever.
Starting point is 01:15:15 Yeah, he couldn't stand him on the Diamondback. I hated the fucking Diamondbacks. So they sent Kamenity, Finley, an infielder, Andahar Sadainio, and Roberto Pedagin and a right-hander Brian Williams to the Padres. here. So San Diego sends left-hander Pedro Martinez, right-hander Doug Brokow, Craig Shipley, Ricky Gutierrez, and Derek Bell, and the Padres also get some money. So 1995, Houston, 76 and 68. Mediocre shit. Yeah, not great. Not great. Second in the NL Central and no wild card back then also. So this year, they have Jeff Bagwell, Craig Bigio, the Killer Bees in general. that whole team, Doug Drebeck late in his career,
Starting point is 01:16:01 Mike Hampton, very young in his career. Luis Gonzalez, another future Diamondback star there. If you want to talk about that, where he fucking had 57 home runs. For no reason at all. In the very next year, I was 12. He had 20 the year before. Definitely not on anything.
Starting point is 01:16:19 No way. Just happened to hit 57 home runs one year, just luck. He just figured it out for a season. Yeah. For one season. One season had enormous thighs and four arms and just jacked for one year. 1995 Houston, he plays in 112 games.
Starting point is 01:16:36 He has 452 at bats, hits 334 with eight homers, 86 ribbyes, 27 stolen bases, and an 827 OPS. This is a very productive guy right now. They're looking like this is a good trade. And he makes $1,450,000 this year, which is doing it. 96 Astros, they are 82 and 80. So close, but not quite. I'm 96. This is the year.
Starting point is 01:17:06 Oh, they had a very young Bobby Abraeu at 22 on that team. And then, of course, Bizio and Bagwell and all those guys that we mentioned before. August 27th, 96, this is interesting. A fan fell out of the stands here. They said, Willie McGee went three for four Monday night and hit a two-run homer that inspired. fired St. Louis to a three to two victory and a series split with the Astros. McGee doubled in the second and beat out a ground ball for a hit in the eighth. As the call was being argued, a fan fell out of the stands in Wright Field,
Starting point is 01:17:38 delaying the game for about 10 minutes. Oh my God. Yeah, center fielder Brian Hunter and right fielder Derek Bell ran over to assist the fan. Bell said, I went over there and asked him if he was all right. He was kind of slurring his words and he said, somebody pushed me. Slurring his words and somebody pushed him. That man has a head injury. Well, yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:59 Yeah. He got hit. And the Hunter said, by the time I got there, he seemed to know what planet he was on. The guy, George Shavers, his name. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to the hospital where the doctors warned him to stay for further tests, but he ignored their advice and walked out with a couple of friends. The hospital administrator said he didn't appear to have any obvious deformities. We didn't see any great distress. So I guess he's fine.
Starting point is 01:18:24 Head injuries oftentimes are real obvious. Oh, they show immediately too. It's fine. 1996, 158 games for Derek's 627 at bats. He hits 263 with 17 homers, 113 ribbyes, which is very productive. 29 stolen bases and a 729 OPS. So doing very well. Makes $2.8 million, dude. Dang.
Starting point is 01:18:50 Now we're talking, Derek. 1997 Astros, 84 and 78, first in the NL Central, going to go to the postseason where they lose in the first round, the division series to the Braves that year. So let's see, this year, where did Derek Bell go here? There he is. Derek Bell has 547 played appearances in 129 games. hits 276, 15 homers, 71 ribbyes.
Starting point is 01:19:22 Where are we on steals here? 15 steals, 782 OPS. Not terrible. Doing pretty goddamn good. So, yeah, this year in the postseason, he plays in three games and has no hits. He has 13 at bats and hits zero. Zero. All zeroed out, and he has three strikeouts.
Starting point is 01:19:43 So terrible postseason. Three games. Against that brave staff, too, back then. Sure. You were facing Maddox, Smoltz, and Glavin. One, two, three. So good luck. Such a fucking potent team.
Starting point is 01:19:56 97, though, he makes $3,250,000. Nice. God damn. 98 Astros. This, I believe, or it was 99. I met Derek Bell in one of these fucking years. I was a bouncer at the Jackson's. The Astros, when they came in, the whole goddamn team would go to Jackson's.
Starting point is 01:20:15 Wow. And just sit in the tables. didn't like ask for a special room. Because most of the guys, nobody recognized. Most of the guys just look like regular guys, baseball players. Like nobody, Craig Bigio could walk through any crowd. Nobody fucking noticed him. He's a little short.
Starting point is 01:20:31 Yeah, he doesn't have a recognize. He doesn't have a face. Wearing glasses, very mild-mannered looking guy. Just nobody noticed him. Bagwell's about a fucking three feet wide, but he's short as shit too. So, yeah, anyway. They were nice. The Astros players were always decent.
Starting point is 01:20:45 They asked us to call them cabs and shit, and they were fine. Anyway, this year they go 102 and 60, killing it. Wow. Finished first in the NL Central. They go to the playoffs where they lose in the divisional round to San Diego, went on to get swept by the Yankees in the World Series that year. So this year, he has 156 games, played 630 at bats, hits 314, 22 homers, 108 ribbies, 13 steals, 855 OPS,
Starting point is 01:21:18 His best year is a major leaguer. Yeah, no shit. By the way, in 95, he was 14th in the MVP voting. Really? In 1995, three years earlier. I forgot to mention that. 13 players better than him. Yeah, that's not bad.
Starting point is 01:21:33 He makes $4,250,000 this year, too. He's doing fine. Yeah. Just doing fine. 99 Astros here. They, let's see, he ends up 128 games 509 at bats hits 236 this year.
Starting point is 01:21:52 Fantastic. Almost a hundred point drop in his average. That's not great. I don't nobody cares about average anymore, but that's pretty telling. 12 homers, 66 ribbies, 18 steals, and a 656 OPS, his lowest OPS of his entire career.
Starting point is 01:22:08 What's going on? Less productive here. It does make $4,500,000. He plays 19,000. He plays as a celebrity competitor in the 1999 Madden Bowl, which is an event tied to the Pro Bowl festivities back then where they'd get players and celebrities to play Madden football. Oh, just playing video games? Yeah, it's held at the All-Star Cafe in Miami, and it featured athletes competing in Madden 99. Bell advanced to the finals where he faced off against Jets cornerback Ray Mickens.
Starting point is 01:22:45 Interesting. December 24th, 1999, Christmas Eve, sitting at home with your family and everything like that. They trade him. They trade Derek Bell on Christmas Eve. They were fearing they would lose him, or no, they were fearing they would lose Mike Hampton.
Starting point is 01:23:03 This is in the Mike Hampton deal to the Mets where they gave him a fuckload of money and he sucked from that on. Yeah, Mike Hampton ate shit and that's a famous, got my contract, not going to do a goddamn thing for the rest of my career guy. Nice. They dealt center fielder
Starting point is 01:23:19 Carl Everett for the same reason. He ended up being a pretty good player for the Red Sox there. Hampton was 22 and 4 and the Cy Young runner-up last season. And right fielder Derek Bell will go to the Mets in exchange for pitcher Octavio Dottel
Starting point is 01:23:33 and outfielder Roger Sedanio. Bell is upset. He said he's happy to be going to the Mets, but he leaves Houston with some bitterness, he said. Sure. He said, everybody turned their back on me, when I had this off year for the first time in my career.
Starting point is 01:23:49 I'm going to try to shove it up there, you know what. I want to make them know they made a mistake. Shove it up there, what? That's great. Hey, this is perfect. According to Lou Brown, I like that kind of attitude in the ball player. Only problem is, I didn't catch you. He said, I expect to come back and be healthy and have the kind of year I'm used to having.
Starting point is 01:24:10 I usually stay between 80 and 100 RBI, 15 to 20 homers, and hit for a high average. So he's like, I had one off year and they fucking trade me. He's pissed. Yeah. He said the guys on that team, Bigio Bagwell, they know Durker did me wrong, Larry Durker, the manager. But even though the things they did to me were very bad, I cheered for the people ahead of me. When they didn't start me in the playoffs, I was on the top step of the dugout and I was the first one out to shake hands whenever anybody did something good. He said that he attributed his bad season to the lengthy absence of his batting coach, Tom McCraw, who underwent surgery for colon cancer.
Starting point is 01:24:50 He said he was like a father figure to me, remember? He was on my mind all the time when he was away from the team with colon cancer treatment. I didn't get a chance to see him. I didn't get any phone calls from him, and I missed that. He taught me so much about hitting and the mindset about hitting. When he left, it really threw me. It helped when he came back. when he came back, and I'll still be talking to him a lot.
Starting point is 01:25:13 The Mets manage, our general manager, Steve Phillips, admitted the Astros were trying very hard to move Bell. He said it wasn't necessarily a prerequisite, a prerequisite, but it probably helped us through the process to have Bell in the deal. But Phillips said he's a great guy. You know, he's a good player and we want him. He said, we felt Derek Bell in the last year of his contract and moving to a new city. he'd have extra motivation. The thing we like is that at age 31, Derek still has energy in his legs.
Starting point is 01:25:43 There's no reason he shouldn't bounce right back. Okay. And Derek said the first thing that comes to my mind is that I have a chance to get back to the World Series, which ironically, in 2000 they do. Again, lose again to the Yankees. He said like I did with Toronto. He said, Christmas came early for me.
Starting point is 01:26:00 I love the team and the lineup the Mets have. And with Mike Hampton coming along with me, I told my agent, I'm ready to go out and run. right now. Let's go. So let's do it. 2000, New York Mets, 94 and 68.
Starting point is 01:26:13 They win the divisional series against the Giants that year in four games. Five games it takes them in the NLCS to beat the Cardinals and then they lose the World Series in five games to the Yankees. I still remember that last out.
Starting point is 01:26:27 It's a long fly ball from piazza to center field, long pop-up, basically, that I was hoping the win wasn't going to take. So this year you got, let's see, Edgardo Alfonso, Mike Bordick, Derek Bell, John Franco at 39 still there.
Starting point is 01:26:43 Holy crack. Darrell Hamilton, Mike Hampton, Ricky Henderson's on this team. Two different Bobby Joneses, by the way. They had two different Bobby Joneses on that team. Two different Bobby Jones. Yep, two different Bobby Joneses. Pat Mahomes, fucking Patrick's dad, Al Leiter. Yeah, well, the drunk, that's right.
Starting point is 01:27:06 Melvin Mora, Ray Ordonez. He was a good little shortstop. Couldn't hit for ship, but he could play that shortstop. Timo Perez, Mike Piazza, Todd Pratt. Wow, these are names from the past here. Blasts from the past. Todd Zeal, Robin Ventura, that crew. May 21st, 2000, New York Daily News.
Starting point is 01:27:29 Here we go. Quote, Chestein Bell oversees DB 14. Derek Bell's auto detailing business. in Tampa. Every few days during the season, Chastine drives 30 miles to her oldest son's house and collects his mail. I take it home and open it up. And if it's something I think he should see, I let him know. If it's something unimportant, I take care of it. For taking care of Bell's business interests, Chastine draws a salary and writes herself a check. Quote, I pay all the bills. He doesn't write a check unless he buys something personally. So she's his business manager, basically.
Starting point is 01:28:04 Derek does plenty of that. He bought his mother a four-bedroom home in the Tampa suburb, a 2,000 Mercedes, a 99 Ford Expedition, and a $50,000 diamond ring. That seems like a lot. Seems excessive. Bell also gave his 22-year-old half-brother Marlin a 99 Mercedes. It's a year old, but you're my half-brother, so that's what he said. No, that's not right. He purchased for himself.
Starting point is 01:28:30 This is amazing. You know what he bought himself? What did you get? A 63-foot yacht. What? I wish you guys could see the fucking look at the Jimmy's face just changed. You did not expect me to say. How many guesses would it have taken to get to a 60-plus foot yacht on guess what he bought for himself?
Starting point is 01:28:50 How many guesses? What does he think that is going to happen? That is. Okay. Well, the thing is, it's moored at Chelsea Pierce in New York. He's living on it. He's living on it. He's not, he doesn't have a house.
Starting point is 01:29:06 He has no residence in New York. That's his residence in New York is the boat. That is so expensive. But in his mind, he just wants to say he lives on a yacht, I think. Chastien said he takes care of his mama and his brothers. Oh my God. Wow. They said when Bell first appeared in New York with the Mets during a Midtown News
Starting point is 01:29:26 conference on a friggin' January afternoon, he wore a diamond-crusted bracelet on one wrist, a diamond-studded watch on the other. He emphatically told reporters about his mother and how she taught him humility. Never married at 31. He has unabashedly asked reporters this season to advertise his infatuation with Tony Braxton, Janet Jackson,
Starting point is 01:29:48 Selma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, and Mariah Carey, in hopes of scoring a date with any of them. He said, these are the women I like. Spread the word. Maybe they'll come to me. Bell has also adopted McCraw as a father figure. He said, we just latched on to each other. He told me what he was going to do, how he was going to turn me around.
Starting point is 01:30:08 He helped me attitude-wise, where to eat off the field. Something comes up. He pulled me to the side and talk to me like a man. We'd go to the cage, sit down, have a man-to-man conversation without even picking up a bat. We'd sit down and talk about real estate and all kinds of stuff. McRaw and acknowledged, he treats Bell, quote, just like my son. I told him I'm going to tell you what's wrong And I'm going to tell you how to do it
Starting point is 01:30:30 He'd huff and he'd puff and then he'd do it Where the fuck was he when He's trying to buy a boat to live on? That's a fucking yacht 63 foot or 4 foot whatever It's a lot of boat It's a lot of fucking boat It's just too much boat
Starting point is 01:30:44 It's just too much James that's today that's 30 million dollars That's just too much boat And you've got to maintain that boat That's too much boat Oh that's a lot of boats It's too much boat. So much shit breaks on those.
Starting point is 01:30:58 Oh, God. He said once two seasons ago, Bell made a base running mistake, and McCraw lambased at him in the dugout. Bell cringed. He said, don't holler at me. I'm sensitive. McRaw realized, he said, I realized I went past the line and backed up. Accom accustomed to the support of a mother who often drove 15 hours to see him play in the minor leagues, Bell came to know a different kind of discipline.
Starting point is 01:31:21 When he misbehaved as a child, Chastine would drive him to baseball. practice, tell his coach to make him run extra laps, and then would drive him straight home. He said, no matter how bad someone treats me or says things about me, I'll never respond in a negative way. That's going to get tested here. So he also said that McCross said he's not as secure as he could be. He needs to be stroked. You want to rethink that?
Starting point is 01:31:50 You want to back up and think about that for a minute what you just said? So July 11, 2000, the headline is, Bell responds to warm welcome from new teammates and fans. He said that he's happy that the Astros here. The subject this morning, however, is on how television sports anchors in Houston have been apologizing this season before showing viewers yet another highlight performance
Starting point is 01:32:17 by former Astro, Derek Bell, Mike Hampton, or Carl Everett. Bell said, they're missing it now, I guess. but it's over. I can't do anything about it. I guess they're paying for it now. Yeah. Yeah. Mike Piazza said some times everybody needs a new start or a fresh start. He came in here with a great attitude, started having fun, didn't put pressure on himself, and the fans have taken to him. They've taken him in. It's been a very quick, it's been a very quick marriage in a sense. So, yeah, he's doing well.
Starting point is 01:32:49 He said, one bad year, this is Derek Bell, one bad year in eight years and they had to get rid of me. There's nothing you can do about it. They had to make speeches and get rid of me. So he's here. He's ready to go. And they said Derek has provided stability in the outfield. He's had consistently, he's had a consistently good at bats, even though he didn't see results for the first three weeks.
Starting point is 01:33:11 He's working hard, taking the game seriously. And he's been a welcome edition in the clubhouse. That is the management there. Bell hit a game-winning home run in his first game at Shea in a Mets uniform, only to play second fiddle to the club. the uniform itself. He wore an extra baggy jersey with long sleeves. And in his words, quote,
Starting point is 01:33:31 doing it for my hip-hop community. Only to be ordered by Major League Baseball to tighten it up. Okay. Bell complied but still wears the baggy pants, which sag several inches around the waistband as he strolls through the clubhouse where he was last year in Houston. Then there's the matter of his living arrangements.
Starting point is 01:33:54 Rather than rent an apartment in the city, he purchased a 63-foot yacht and moors it free of charge at a Manhattan dock in exchange for advertisement. Okay. So he gets free docking, which is big. That's big. Yeah, but in exchange for, in lieu of,
Starting point is 01:34:10 he's got to do some shit to get it. He's got to do a commercial for him or some shit. Who gives a shit? That's worth fucking docking fees for a 63-foot yacht in New York all year. I can't imagine a slip like that is less than two, three grand a month. Got to be.
Starting point is 01:34:24 Who knows? Bell said, I'm a happy-go-lucky guy. I don't carry any extra baggage or anything. I just try to be me. Okay, okay. Well, this is not should be in Derek. Yeah, being Derek. One thing he does carry is, in a sunglasses case, is a note from Tom McCraw, who was the Astros hitting coach during his years in Houston and something of a father figure. It reads, you're in the top 10% of hitters in the National League. Play hard every day. The note has taken on new meaning in the wake of McRaw's firing by the Astros last month. He said Tommy McCraw was one of the best hitting instructors they had. He turned a lot of guys around, and it's amazing. They got rid of him. It just goes to show that they're not appreciative of the guys they have over there. They don't appreciate it when they have good things, and they let them go by the wayside.
Starting point is 01:35:12 And this year has shown they get what they deserve. Right. That's right. So he said that in New York, he said, people here know baseball and they're into it. Back in Houston, they only had one paper and the TV guys hardly came out to the ballpark. So people really didn't get a chance to see how I can play defense. Here, everything's under the magnifying glass and everyone appreciates when you do well. I left Houston on bad terms, but I had some good years while I was there.
Starting point is 01:35:40 I got to put it behind me and do what I'm doing now, try to help this team win. Get after, yeah. All right. This one day, what is this, May or August 23rd, 2000, he makes his pitching debut. Oh. Oh, yeah. Pat Mahomes was ripped by the San Diego in his spot start. Damien Jackson had his first career Grand Slam and Phil Nevin and John Mabry. He had consecutive second deck homers in the Padres romp.
Starting point is 01:36:07 The game was so out of hand that Mets right fielder Derek Bell made his first career pitching appearance in the eighth inning. His first pitch was clocked at 47 miles an hour. Nice. And he wound up allowing five runs on three hits and four walks. Wearing sunglasses and drawing shuckles from his teammates, Bell did not even look into catcher Todd Pratt for signs. Manager Bobby Valentine made the trip to the mound during the inning, which included a three-run double by Corey DeHaan.
Starting point is 01:36:37 They go out and they tell those guys, just don't hurt yourself. Don't throw it as hard as you can. Just don't fuck yourself up. 47, babe. Throw it over the plate. Let them hit it. Hopefully they hit it at. Eventually they'll hit three of them at people.
Starting point is 01:36:49 That's literally what they tell these guys. Don't hurt yourself. Because then you end up with like Jose Canseco blowing his arm out. Trying to pitch fancy. Okay. September 17, 2000 here. Derek Bell finds a home in New York is the headline. Mets outfielder living on his yacht.
Starting point is 01:37:08 Now we get to find a little bit more about this here. Derek Bell, who's earning five. $2 million as the New York Mets right fielder this season is taking batting practice a few hours before an evening game with the Atlanta Braves. The crowd has yet to enter Shea Stadium in Flushing. A sweet-faced corn-fed girl from somewhere USA is standing on the ball field practicing the national anthem over the public address system. She sings earnestly. She sings flat. She is not good. She is resoundingly booed by the hot dog vendors. Okay. Derek Bell said, New York's a tough town, yo. Yeah. If you get booed during your warm-ups for the national anthem, that's rough. He said that he did not plan to come to New York and New York didn't plan to have him here.
Starting point is 01:37:59 He said, but the article says Derek Bell became the Mets property in a toss-up here. And he's been batting, you know, he's been doing all right, blah, blah, blah. He said, New York lesson number one, because he said he's learned some stuff since he's been here. Oh, good. He's learned. He said he promised to make New York love him. He promised to eat in cool restaurants. He promised to find a cool place to live in Manhattan.
Starting point is 01:38:23 He was just saying, I'm going to be cool here. Yeah, yeah. New York lesson number one, quote, the rent is really high, yo. That's number one. He says he likes to live nicely. He has more than a hundred pairs of alligator shoes. 100 pairs. A hundred.
Starting point is 01:38:41 Black and blue winged. The Florida's empty down there. They don't have any more. A hundred pairs. People dumping bodies out in the fucking Everglades. They come back three weeks later. They're still there and intact and whole. He's got all the alligators in his closet.
Starting point is 01:38:55 James, I think he's already broke. I don't think I've owned a hundred pair of shoes in my entire life. No. If you added them all up, I have about a hundred pairs of shoes in my life. That includes my last few years of buying a lot of sneakers. I'll bet I've had 20 pairs prior to the 15 pairs I have in my closet now.
Starting point is 01:39:14 Yes, now I have more sneakers because I'm not poor anymore, so fuck off. I'll have as many sneakers as I want. But not 100 fucking pairs, and they don't cost as much as alligators as fucking gators. Fuck off. I find jumps on sale for 125, and I'm like, oh, God.
Starting point is 01:39:35 I got shoes in there that are $30. I got shoes in there. I got a $5 pair of shoes in there, James. I have no gators out of my collection of all. I have a single pair of gaiters. A hundred. I have one pair of semi-expensive dress shoes that I bought for my grandmother's funeral. Literally, it's to respect my grandmother, not for even for me, just for her.
Starting point is 01:39:56 That's it. So he says he has a hundred pair black and blue, wing tips, white and coral and wing tips, coral wing tips, black wing tips, white wing tips. He has a six-bedroom house in Tampa. Five of them filled with orange suits, turquoise suits, green suits, and more shoes. When the 90s are over, he's going to have a hilarious, a hilarious garage sale. Or a lot of 90s parties. Every weekend.
Starting point is 01:40:24 The only person shopping there is going to be Steve Harvey. It's going to be very embarrassing. And he's the only one who shows up for all these suits. Oh, man. He says, that's what I have. Quote, I got clothes, yo. I would say so, bud. He said, I got to be representing.
Starting point is 01:40:42 I don't want to get caught slipping. What is going on? He has five vehicles. Uh-huh. Three trucks, a new Mercedes, and a maroon convertible Rolls Royce. He is living it up. I'm subtracting all this from what he's made so far, and he is broke. I'm so uncomfortable. He's broke.
Starting point is 01:41:01 I am extremely un-doubt. He cannot insure that. Wow. He has a yacht, a speedboat, and a fishing boat. He can't ensure this. He can't. You're out of your mind. He has five cars, three boats.
Starting point is 01:41:15 You can't afford the gas for that. That's great. Anyone who has three boats has lost their fucking mind. Even that or they're a billionaire. One of the two. You've got to change oil in that. That's insane. He wears a golden diamond baseball pendant,
Starting point is 01:41:31 golden diamond studs and golden diamond watch. He says, I mean, I got things and I needed a place to put them. He definitely got things. Yeah. I mean, I got things and I needed a place to put them. What do you want? I'm going to be sick. He has not played enough nor made enough money to have these things.
Starting point is 01:41:50 Well, he said, this is amazing. He went looking for a two-bedroom apartment in New York in January. Yeah. Okay. This is in 2000. He said, I knew New York was expensive, but, yo. When I went looking for a two-bedroom, I was thinking somewhere around 14-15. Thousand?
Starting point is 01:42:07 No. He meant 14-15-100 a month. Okay. Because in 2000, in a normal place, like Houston, 14-1500 a month would get you a very nice place. Very nice place. Very nice place. 14, 1,500 a month in New York in 2000 gets you nothing. That puts you in New Jersey.
Starting point is 01:42:26 That puts you in the projects or in New Jersey. He said he found a lot of two-beds. renting for around 14, 15 a month, the problem was it's 14, 15,000 a month. Yes. Because he told the agent 14, 15 a month, and they said, okay, and they brought them a bunch of two bedroom apartments that were $14,000 or $15,000 a month because that's what they cost. Okay. So he thinks that's outrageous, which is fantastic.
Starting point is 01:42:48 Which is hilarious because he has a yacht. What are you talking about? And that's to live in these doormann, Upper East Side. But, you know, these are like, you want to act like you have all money and all this shit. It's expensive to live in New York. got in some place in the suburbs or Connecticut or somewhere like that. Oh, okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:43:05 You want to live in fucking Manhattan, midtown or, you know, some shit like that costs. It's, yeah, it's not free, man. He said, and then you got to pay the agent a month's commission. I said, hell no. I mean, I could afford it, but why should I when I got options? And the options was keeping most of his stuff in Tampa while bringing his C-ray 800 yacht. He said, how many times I got to say it's not a.
Starting point is 01:43:31 boat, yo. It's a yacht. It's a C-ray 800. I mean, C-ray implies boat. But yeah, that's a giant boat. He's got, and it's important that you know that it's not a boat. It's a yacht. It's got three state rooms. That's right. He began living on it in April when the season began on a couple of occasions. He sailed it to work at Shea Stadium. It's tied up on the west side of Manhattan in a marina close to a popular tourist spot and he'll pay for the slip by doing some publicity. for the owner. He said, the funny thing is,
Starting point is 01:44:03 yo, it's got more room than the penthouse as I was looking at. Yeah, I'm sure. Lesson number two, never keep the fish. That's important back then.
Starting point is 01:44:15 It sits in the Hudson River and he says, it's a, he said it's a leather and smoked glass. It is leather and smoke glass and has a garage for his jet ski,
Starting point is 01:44:27 two bedrooms, two full bats, a kitchen and a wallful of electronica. Like many New York apartments, it has only beer in the refrigerator and the stove has never been used. On the deck, there's a bottle of Hennessy and a leather couch, and beyond
Starting point is 01:44:41 that is the pier where tourists walk by. A slightly plump white woman sits up there, wearing a skirt, her legs slightly apart. What the fuck kind of... What the fuck kind of detail is that to put in the paper? He likes chunky white chicks who
Starting point is 01:44:56 sit in a slutty poses. Air dry. Wow. That is a slightly plump white woman. He's like, she's thick, yo. What's what are you talking about? Don't call her plump. That's different than thick. Pussy.
Starting point is 01:45:14 With her pussy out. This reporter saw her pussy. D. Bell. Steve and ABC News. One pussy to go. One pussy down, eight million to go in the naked city. D. Bell, the fisherman, casts his line. Hey, excuse me, you waiting for somebody?
Starting point is 01:45:33 Five more minutes, she says. Five more minutes and I'm getting on your boat. You can get on my boat anytime, baby. She melts into a dopey smile. She keeps tugging down her top. It's not clear if she knows this is D. Bell, although his face is unmistakable. The squash-shaped head, the thick goatee, deep lines running across his forehead, the beanpole body. This is a very, this guy is, I want him to.
Starting point is 01:45:59 my obituary for Christ's sake. He'll make you sound like a piece of shit, no matter what happens. He'll make you sound like you were grown in a garden. And you like fat white girls. That's who you're into. Oh my God. It doesn't matter because Dee Bell knows by now that in New York it's good enough to look as if you're someone worth knowing. You need a new friend he asks here.
Starting point is 01:46:22 He asks her, no telling what I need, she says. D. Bell spends his time away from the ballpark on his yacht with his head down, drink in his hand, listening to people whisper, is that really him? What, the broke man? The broke man who should be forward. Incredibly overextended right now. Wow. T. Bell is one of the few New York professional athletes to live in Manhattan.
Starting point is 01:46:44 He's the only one living on a yacht. Yeah. He never really invited the gawking woman aboard. It's sort of like catch and release, a tease. He learned that lesson a long time ago. That's the fish he's talking about. It was April 94 and D. Bell was playing for the same. Diego Padres. He and a teammate were arrested at East 30th Street in Lexington Avenue for soliciting
Starting point is 01:47:05 sex from two undercover police women. The players said they were teasing and pleaded not guilty. The charges were dropped six months later for lack of evidence. So now Dee Bell, who sometimes refers to himself in the third person, rarely goes out. And when he does, he says, quote, I'm chill. He's just chill. He does not trust the motives of many New York women. He's never been to Central Park, he says. He's never visited a museum. He's never seen a show. His clothes are imported from Cincinnati. You know, we're all the top fashion. Cincinnati. Cincinnati. He's just got some guy who makes giant weird colored suits there. It's got to be. Is that where they get the gators? Why would you bring shit in from Cincinnati? He said, don't need any of that.
Starting point is 01:47:50 Just give me my hip-hop music and my game and I'm happy. And then lesson number three, drive like the cabbies do. He said it wasn't until May that he got the nerve to drive in Manhattan, and it scared him. He said, the way these fools drive, I wasn't sure. But the more he saw of it, the more he liked the challenge. So he brought his truck to New York and he said it's basically three rules. One, whoever has the front end ahead of the other has the right away. That's Manhattan driving. When in doubt, use the gas pedal also.
Starting point is 01:48:25 Very good. You break, you're just going to cause a pile up. And he says, three never use brakes. Oh, never use them anyway. He said, now I drive like a fool anyway, any way possible like the cabbies do. And New Yorkers know, New Yorkers, you know, yo, they all about ball. I'll be sitting there in traffic and they'll say, hey, yo, Derek, like rooting, you know. It ain't like that in Houston.
Starting point is 01:48:52 Okay. Keith Hernandez, who works for the Mets and played for him for a long time, said he's a breath of fresh air. He said, he reminds me of the old Mets with Gooden and Strawberry and Lenny Dykstra. You know, three fucking crime and sports alumni. He has a throwback to that. Three drug addicts. Where is he now? Yeah. It makes sense. He said, there's a lot of serious guys on that team. There's too much seriousness. He's just a character and there should be more personalities like him in baseball. Gene Pemberton, the Astros team chaplain, who developed a close or relationship with Derek said he's got a big old heart but when people start getting on him it can
Starting point is 01:49:34 get to him you can really rattle people's cages up there can't you he says it doesn't bother him but wait till he gets in a little slump okay um this is funny all right uh this is all from him uh quote tities mr bell called out titties he has a habit of calling out random lyrics to whatever hip hop or rap song happens to be playing in the clubhouse stereo. Then he launched into a rap of his own. I don't think it's a rap here. What song is Titties? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:50:08 Some song, I guess in some point in the song, the word Titties happens, and he really wants to emphasize that lyric. What year? 2000. Could be anything. Any fucking southern shit from back. Who the hell knows? So this isn't a rap.
Starting point is 01:50:23 This is just his bullshit. He said, I'm just Derek Bell. I come to the Paul Par. A ballpark every day. I go home. I walk the street with all the crowds in New York. And in New York, if you have good rapport with the media, you talk to them and when they want to talk to you and you know what I'm saying. There ain't no problem. You got to do your job. I got to do mine. If I fuck up, you got to do your job, talking about the media. You know, you read the paper and it says Derek Bell made an error cost in the game. They read it while they're eating breakfast or while they're drinking their coffee or while they're, you know, on the toilet taking a shit. And guess what? Next paper comes out the next day and you did something good. You know what I'm saying? And then they're going to get the next paper the next day and they're going to read that. If some guy's an asshole or reporters and he don't relate to him, that's when you're going to get on their bad side. You might write something bad and then ain't going to stop you from being my friend. You know what I'm saying? Why should I be an asshole to you guys when you write about how I did something wrong if I did something wrong and I admit it, you know, it doesn't bother me. He said there's other times when he finds himself walking around Manhattan near the double tree hotel in Times Square where he's living at that point. I don't know why he's living there. You got a yacht. I think he might have got rid of the yacht. He lives when he's not on the bell 14. That's when he wants to stay on land. That's what he stays,
Starting point is 01:51:45 the double tree where everyone's, everyone with a yacht stays. That's when he forgets he's famous. He's tough to miss with his baggy eyes and shaved head. Any other insults they want to? So he's beanpole, squash-shaped, baggy eyes. Squash-shaped head with baggy eyes. Jesus Christ. And he's a beanpole on top of it. When people turn to look at him, he turns too to see what everyone's looking at. He said, you know, I step outside to go to McDonald's or something, go to Wendy's, and people
Starting point is 01:52:18 look and say, oh, he said, imitating someone doing a double take. And then I turn around and look. And then I remember, oh, damn, because, you know, I'm out there walking. around with everyone waiting for the light to change. Back in the clubhouse before games, his teammates were trickling in. They saw him getting his coordination right and started getting into the act. Pitcher Pat Mahomes grabbed one of Mr. Bell's suit jackets and tried it on over his t-shirt and did a little dance. Outfielder John, yes, this is crazy.
Starting point is 01:52:49 Outfielder Joe Nunnley joined in. Clutching a can of Mountain Dew, Mr. Bell danced across the clubhouse to pitcher John Franco's locker. where a knob on the wall controls the volume with the clubhouse music. He cranked it up and danced away. Mr. Franco turned it back down. John Franco's 40 at this point. You got a 40-year-old getting in there.
Starting point is 01:53:09 He's like, I ain't listening to this. I'm on the water net. I'm turning it down. You bring me a nice sausage and peppers, maybe. Something like that. We'll talk about it. But they gave him the volume, which is very funny. That's funny.
Starting point is 01:53:21 At his locker, Mr. Bell assembled his road trip entertainment, dressed in his uniform pants, spikes and no shirt. He sorted through his stack of electronic equipment, portable CD player video game machines, battery recharge or headphones, and dozens of AA batteries. Wow. Wow.
Starting point is 01:53:38 2000 Mets plays in 144 games, 546 at Bats, hits 266, 18 homers, 69 ribbyes, only eight stolen bases, and a 773 OPS. So not great, not terrible. Only plays in one game of the
Starting point is 01:53:56 post-season, it looks like, and had no hits. So they gave him one at bat the whole post-season. Yeah. Which is crazy that he didn't play at all through three fucking rounds of playoffs. When they've given him a lot of money, and he needs to earn some more. He made $5 million this year. Yeah. Makes no sense.
Starting point is 01:54:16 December 11, 2000, he's gone. Mm-hmm. He is gone. In a two-hour period yesterday, the Pirates filled two major roster needs by signing free agent right fielder Derek Bell and closing the deal with left-handed pitcher Terry Mulholland who shores up their bullpen. So now
Starting point is 01:54:33 he's on Pittsburgh. Bell is guaranteed about $9 million. He agreed to a two-year contract worth about $9 million with the pirates. 2001 pirates, 62 and 100. Not good. Not good at all. No, manager
Starting point is 01:54:49 Lloyd McClendon, I believe, is this the year where he went out and took the base and brought it back because he was managing. Maybe. He went out, argued with the umpire, got super pissed off, picked up second base, put it under his arm, and took it back to the dugout with him. Yeah, our first base, wherever the fuck it was.
Starting point is 01:55:06 Anyway, this year, Brandon Arroyo, pre-red Sox. Not a lot of household names here. Mike Feders, Brian Giles, he was good. Jason Kendall. There's a real good player for a while there until he mangled himself. Got all hurt. Yeah. Pat Mears.
Starting point is 01:55:25 not a lot of great aramis Ramirez. It was good for a little while. Yeah, that's about that. So March 15th, 2001, big article in the Patriot News, Bell's style may clash with bucks. Okay. He said, so far, Derek Bell hasn't exactly been a good fit with the pirates. One look at his uniform shows that.
Starting point is 01:55:48 He wears pants three sizes bigger and a couple inches longer than any of his teammate. Who cares? Who fucking cares? Why would that... Imagine sitting around going, look at his pants. How gay is that? How about you fucking 24 other guys
Starting point is 01:56:01 of my team? Stop looking at my ass. How's that? Well, listen, he's got baggy eyes. Yeah, he's got baggy eyes and pants. Yeah. That's hilarious. That's...
Starting point is 01:56:11 These are the real masculine guys that sit around talking about another guy's pants. Think about that. How fucking gay is that? It's a gayest thing ever. I don't care what pants you have on. Who cares? So, anyway,
Starting point is 01:56:24 his pants, his game pants are so loose, so baggy. Think of the jeans kids once wore at their ankles. Some opposing manager is bound to protest them. Why? In one of the quietest clubhouses in the majors, he's the one talking the loudest, talking the longest. His cell phone has the noisiest ring. The CD player in his luxury import car has the most exotic sound system. Even his spring training accommodations aren't the typical players'
Starting point is 01:56:53 condo or beachfront apartment. No, Bell is living on a yacht loaded with luxuries of a cruise liner. Apparently enough, too, Bell seems to be cruising through spring training. Also, too loose and relaxed, one proven winner on a ball club that has known nothing but losing for eight years.
Starting point is 01:57:12 I assume that's why you get a guy like that because he's a winner. And then he comes in acting like a winner and you go, hey, calm down. Stop doing that. That's why you suck for 30 years, pirates. What the fuck? That's why, since Barry Bonds left.
Starting point is 01:57:26 That's why you sucked for a decade. The Pirates added Bell and his hip-hop wardrobe, his high-voltage personality, and his accompanying baggage after finishing 69 and 93 last year. Yeah, whatever. Your quiet clubhouse doesn't work. You guys suck. It's not doing it. Get crazy a little bit.
Starting point is 01:57:46 Lighter. Yeah. Somebody do something nuts in here. Yeah. So, anyway, they, uh, there's a, Not a lot of guys on the pirates are making this kind of money. They're known as one of the cheapest clubs, especially back then. Astros manager, Larry Djerker, who managed Bell, knows what Bell can add to a team and what he can take away.
Starting point is 01:58:05 He said he's the type of guy who will go the way the club is going. If the club is winning, he'll take a lead role. But if it isn't such a good team, he's not a personality like Jeff Bagwell or Craig Biggio, who'll find a way to have a good year when the team isn't. Okay. Now, Derek Bell said he was surprised by Dirker saying that, saying, quote, I played on teams that have done well every year. Fuck you talking about, Larry.
Starting point is 01:58:33 In 1998, he was so full of energy after a not so good year in 97, and he did it all, and he did all the work he needed to, Dirker said. In 99, he was back to being the old Derek Bell. I don't think he was ever in shape when the season started. Bell also didn't have a particularly good season with the Mets, hitting 266 with 18 homers and 69 RBI, only a dozen of them after the All-Star break. Oh.
Starting point is 01:58:59 In his last eight games or nine games of the season, he hit 036, a one for 28 clip. What? Why they sat his ass down in the playoffs, he was cold. He missed, oh, he sprained an ankle, too, in the first game. That makes sense. He said, Dirker wonders about Bell's preparation. He says, sometimes you see players with a lot of natural ability.
Starting point is 01:59:19 They expect it to be there all the time. As you get older, you have to work harder to get in shape physically and mentally, but the players with natural ability always think it will be there. He does say that Bell's presence can loosen up a team. And he said, you know, that could be an asset to the pirates. He said he was always fun to have around. You always have a lot of laughs with Derek Bell. He'll laugh with you and you can laugh at him and he doesn't seem to care.
Starting point is 01:59:48 And they ask, what does Larry Durker think about his baggy, pants look in Pittsburgh. And Larry said, they said, how will that go over? And he said, if they win, they'll go over real well. If they don't win, he'll see him rolling them up to here. That's not good. Yeah. If they win, who gives a shit?
Starting point is 02:00:05 No one cares what kind of pants he's wearing. They're excited that he's wearing pants at all. He's not as of his cock dangling out. So this year in Pittsburgh, he only plays in 46 games. Well, it's a long commute from the Hudson. The pier, the Chelsea Pier. Yeah. 56 games, 156 at Batsy, hits 173 with five homers, 13 ribbyes, zero stolen bases, and a 576 OPS.
Starting point is 02:00:29 That's terrible. He makes $5 million. He has done so well. Yeah, he has done... Financially, he's doing fantastic, but... He's... He's really hemorrhaging. He's not doing well at all there.
Starting point is 02:00:45 Anyway, so far, he's made $26,912. But he spent so much. Or $912,000. Sorry. March 19th, 2002. Oh, this was Operation Shutdown here. Okay, that's right. I got him mixed up.
Starting point is 02:01:01 Pirates Bell irked at competing for a job. In spring trading, they're making him compete for a job. Yeah. Because he only hit 173 last year. He said that if the pirates don't give him a starting job in right field, he'll go into, quote, Operation Shutdown. Oh. He said, I'm not going to get hurt if they're not going to. I'm not going to risk injuring myself if I'm not starting. Fuck them, basically.
Starting point is 02:01:21 He doesn't know that that's bad for his trade value or anything? Manager Lloyd McClendon and general manager Dave Littlefield said Bell, Armando Rios and Craig Wilson are competing, and the starter hasn't been decided. But Littlefield said Bell has done little to win the job. Bell said, nobody told me I was in a competition. If there is a competition, somebody better let me know. If there's a competition, they better eliminate me out of the race and go ahead and do whatever they're going to do with me. I ain't never hit in spring training, and I never will. Isn't by virtue of having a major league job, isn't that enough news to know that this is
Starting point is 02:02:00 your in competition to keep this? For the last however many years, he shows up and he's the starter. And they're saying, you hit 173 last year, we're going to make this a con. I think they're trying to light a fire under him, and he's not having that. He's going, you treat me this way. And some guys are like that. Some guys will try harder with that. And some guys will go, well, go fuck yourself then.
Starting point is 02:02:21 Get rid of me then if you don't like me. I've been in a week for 10 years. I'm going to stay here. And you have to pay me $5 million this year either way. So guess what? You want to sit $5 million on the bench? Go ahead. Fuck you.
Starting point is 02:02:32 I'll sit there and collect my fucking money and live on a yacht. Eat dicks. He said, if it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going to go out there and hurt myself in spring training, battling for a job. If it is a competition, then I'm going into operations. Shut them. Shut down. Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed it for a job since 1991. Not interesting. Oh, they do. Yeah. Yeah. Littlefield told the Post Gazette that Bell is certainly competing for a job. At this point, he hasn't done anything to show he deserves a lot of playing time. He just hasn't performed. Last year, he was injured. He looks healthy. We'll just have to see more production.
Starting point is 02:03:08 Yeah, so March 30th, 2002, here it is. Derek Bell said goodbye to the pirates on Friday, even though the pirates have yet to officially say goodbye to him. He shut down. Bell, who's inflammatory remarks two weeks ago, all but assured his release, packed his bags and hugged several Pirates Clubhouse employees Friday before leaving the field.
Starting point is 02:03:32 He reported for treatment on a groid injury that sidelined him since March 18th, and he hurt himself in spring training. Bell's exit came two days before the Pirates break for camp for Monday season opener in New York, and shortly after he discussed his status with the general manager Dave Littlefield. Littlefield said the Pirates made no roster move or trade Friday involving Bell. However, Bell must pass through waivers before he can be released. Okay.
Starting point is 02:04:01 Regardless of when it happens, Bell has been all but gone from the Pirates for days. neither Littlefield nor manager Lloyd McClendon has mentioned Bell in any recent discussion about the right field job shared by Armando Rios and Craig Wilson. When a pirate's publicist saw Bell leaving the clubhouse, he asked him if he had any message to pass on. Bell only said, quote, I got on to my yacht and rode off into the sunset. Like a real cowboy. I got my yacht. I'm my yacht. Wow.
Starting point is 02:04:32 That is amazing. You know, right off into the sunset, you would have ridden a. to the sunrise. No, shit. The sun sets the other way, Daddy. It's the other direction. Well, maybe he's going west. We don't know.
Starting point is 02:04:42 Yeah, who knows? He's been, the boat in spring training, he was living on it. He just anchored it in Bradent in Florida because spring training is in Florida. Oh, down south, yeah. Yeah. So it's about to be announced. Bell has this season remaining on his $9.75 million dollar two-year contract. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 02:05:02 That was given by the general manager, Cam, Bonifay, a deal that may go down as one of the worst in recent years, the contract contributed to the general managers firing in June. Wow. Okay. March 31st, 2002. That's it. The pirates cut down, got to Derek Bell.
Starting point is 02:05:22 They said Bell is officially fucking gone. Now, 2002 in June, okay, Derek Bell is, this is an article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. This bell didn't shut it down, as the headline. Derek Bell is the baseball player. Derek Bell, the baseball player, has not been heard from since going into Operation Shutdown. The same can't be said for Derek Bell, the jockey. Bell recently became the first jockey to win six races and one card in the 15-year history of Canterbury Park in Shacopoe, Minnesota.
Starting point is 02:05:56 As for the other Derek Bell, rumor has it that he, too, has been spending time at the track, the dog track. Oh, really? He's just been gambling. Yeah. He's gambling, all right. He owns a yacht. No, shit. July 3rd, 2002, his boat got robbed.
Starting point is 02:06:13 That is the bummer with those. You got to walk away from it at some point. Good Lord. A former Oklahoma State University basketball player was charged Tuesday. This is crime and sports meeting crime and sports all over here. Was charged Tuesday with stealing $150,000 in cash and jewelry from outfielder Derek Bell. Why would he leave? That's the thing about having a house that's on the water.
Starting point is 02:06:39 You can literally steal your whole house. Never mind just the shit inside of it. According to police, Glendon Alexander 25 broke into Bell's luxury boat March 1st while it was docked in Bradenton near the pirate spring training facility. Alexander opened a hidden safe that he may have noticed while at a party there two weeks ago, witnesses told police. Alexander allegedly stole Bell's World Series ring from the 92 Blue Jays. Holy shit.
Starting point is 02:07:05 And the ring awarded the NL championship ring from the Mets in 2000. You don't plunder a pirate's booty, James. Apparently you do. Here you go right on his boat and blunder. He's just stealing from this man's butt. Wow. Both were recovered two weeks later when one of Alexander's alleged accomplices tipped off the Tampa police.
Starting point is 02:07:26 Alexander, a guard during OSU's 99-200 Elite 8 run, was arrested in Tampa on an unrelated check forging charge. Oh, he's doing very well. We got to look that guy up. This is at least that least. That's two addressed just in this little time period. He's got to have a lot more. Who is this?
Starting point is 02:07:42 What's his name? God damn. Glendon Alexander. I got to write that down here. Just robbing from other players. That's amazing. That seems like that's a future fucking episode. So federal prosecutors later charged him in Oklahoma with attempting to cash a scholarship
Starting point is 02:08:01 check belonging to a current OSU basketball player. He was also arrested in Texas where he pleaded guilty to wire fraud last month. This is in a two-month period. This guy's going to be fucking gold. Bradenton prosecutors waited to file a grand theft
Starting point is 02:08:17 and burglary charge until they had Bell's cooperation. Now this guy faces 15 years in prison if convicted. The burglary heightened tensions between the 33-year-old outfielder and the pirates. Bell insisted Jerry Davis, a 23-year-old
Starting point is 02:08:32 outfielder and first-round draft pick for the club was responsible for the theft. The remark alienated Bell from management and teammates who believed the other guy. Bell and the Pirates were already at a stand off over the Operation Shutdown. Shit.
Starting point is 02:08:49 Anyway, so the Pirates said they didn't know about the burglary. April 21st, 2006. Never plays again, by the way. That's it. That's it? That's baseball. for Derek Bell.
Starting point is 02:09:02 Operation shutdown, shut him down. Shut him down. People said, well, he hit 1-4-76 last time he tried. Why bother, basically? Don't need him. His attitude sucks. Why have him here? Fuck him.
Starting point is 02:09:15 Because, I mean, yeah, if he's going to be like a late career guy, he's going to be competing for anything. So if he doesn't want to compete, then fuck him. But, I mean, no one even brought him in for spring training. Nobody gave him an invite, took a flyer on him. Maybe we'll see how kind of shape he's in. Holy shit. Like he just, nobody liked him after that.
Starting point is 02:09:32 April 21st, 2006, Derek Bell gets pulled over. Oh? He gets pulled over at 3.17 a.m. I wonder what's going on. Gee, weird. That's always when good things are happening, unless he's got a paper route that I don't know about. He's up to no good. Tampa Police stopped him at 317 a.m.
Starting point is 02:09:53 When his 2005 Ford Excursion ran a stoplight at North 19th Street and East Shep. Lone Avenue. Officers asked Bell and an unidentified passenger. I bet a chubby white one, maybe. Perhaps air drying her pussy? Perhaps. We don't know. That's why they pulled them over yet. Her leg was hanging out the window. It was air drying. They asked him to step out of the vehicle after what appeared, seeing what appeared to be a knife on the center console. speaking, then they got him, searched him a little bit and found out that he's facing a felony cocaine possession charge after police found two pipes with cocaine residue in his vehicle. So two used crack pipes, who cares. Speaking by phone after his release from Orient Road jail on $2,500 bail, he said the knife was in fact a butane lighter, you know, that I like to use to light my crack pipe. You know, you got to have a good one for the...
Starting point is 02:10:56 It's a scraper slash lighter all in one tool. It's really handy. I got to tell you. He also said the police had no probable cause to search his vehicle. He said, I think it was a setup. I never had trouble like that before. Okay. Sergeant Eric Diaz, a police spokesman said officers routinely asked motorists if they may search their vehicle during traffic stops.
Starting point is 02:11:19 The affidavit states that Bell gave the officer's verbal permission for the search. They found two drug pipes, as they called them, on the floorboard behind the driver's seat. The residue on the pipe tested positive for cocaine, prompting the felony charge and a misdemeanor charge of drug paraphernalia. Bell said police also issued him a traffic ticket for running the stop sign. Asked whether the pipes were his, Bell said, why would I leave him inside the car? Everybody knows Derek Bell takes his crack pipes with him inside the house so he can smoke. crack in the house. I keep those with me at all times.
Starting point is 02:11:58 He then said, quote, who cares? Which I, that's the best love. What? What are you fucking care? I'm retired. I'm not a ball player anymore. Suck my dick, which is a, that's a great line.
Starting point is 02:12:08 He said, who cares? I'm retired. I put away my money. I ain't got to please nobody but my mama and two little brothers. Fuck all you. That's a great line. Don't really care if you're upset about this or not. I don't play anymore.
Starting point is 02:12:21 Who cares? Got this dick right here. And you can suck it at your earliest possible convenience. Who cares is a very funny. It's great. It's true. Who cares? What do you care?
Starting point is 02:12:34 I don't play anymore. I'm a private person. Suck my balls. I love it. That's a great line. Well, the law only applies to athletes clearly. Well, no, it means who cares in terms of why are you talking to me, press person? I don't play anymore.
Starting point is 02:12:50 The cops might care, but no one else should. I don't matter. Yeah. Who cares? I'm retired. I got my money put away. Don't give a fuck if you're mad or not because I don't have to impress you. Fuck off. That's a great line.
Starting point is 02:13:03 I mean, if you're going to do it, own it and say, fuck it. What do you care? What I fucking do. He declined to say who his passenger was or where he had been that evening before his arrest. He said, that's irrelevant. I think it's pretty irrelevant here, though. Wow. In his retirement, he says he volunteers as a baseball coach from Middleton High School and dabbles in real estate.
Starting point is 02:13:27 A spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County School District said Bell is not a volunteer coach, but has helped with the team, which includes some family members with batting practice early in the season. He was here for a minute with like his nephew and he helped him with a swing and then he was gone. Trust me. He would enter a plea of no contest to the charges and the presiding judge. Withheld adjudication. So basically, he got a freebie. Fuck it. It's just crack pipes.
Starting point is 02:13:56 Who cares? Okay. December 3rd, 2008, he's in trouble again. Uh-oh. He's booked into a Hillsborough jail early Tuesday evening with one of the saddest mugshots of had a received. Oh, no. We'll post it on the social media.
Starting point is 02:14:11 He looks, you know, when someone gets arrested and they just look like whatever, he looks sad. He looks, he looks like it's hurt his feelings. is what it looks like. It's real funny. I got to say. It's fucking hilarious. So he's booked early Tuesday on drug charges. Means it was out.
Starting point is 02:14:29 He lives in Valrico and is listed as unemployed in jail records. Oh, shit. He faces three misdemeanor counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and one count of failing to appear in court on another possession charge of drug paraphernalia, a charge that he just got just recently. Not the one from 2006, a different one. So he's had some problems here. Last year, he pleaded no contest, and there's that. Now, this arrest violated some shit here, and he was held on these three counts with his missed court dates. They held him because he had missing court dates.
Starting point is 02:15:05 Generally, it doesn't really matter what you did unless it's like murder under special circumstances. You will get bail if you keep showing up for court. They will keep bailing you out. That's like credit in court, basically. that's like your credit almost like you know, we can lend you the money for this car. It looks like your credit history is good. They look at your court showing up and if you show up all the time, they keep giving you bail.
Starting point is 02:15:29 You're reliable, you'll show up even if you're going to be fucked here. So he resolved the misdemeanor charges through a standard plea that resulted in a little bit of jail time, booking and some probationary oversight. Okay. Okay. So he's a fucking mess. Boy, oh, boy. Boy.
Starting point is 02:15:49 He doesn't give a fuck. He says, who cares? But clearly he's got a bit of a drug issue. Yeah. And by the way, buying yachts and diamonds and then having a cocaine habit will wipe your money out pretty quick. It will destroy you. It will fuck you up, man. That is not good.
Starting point is 02:16:06 So, yeah, he's sitting on his yacht trying to figure out life. Yeah. Doesn't know what to do with himself. What do you do if you're this guy at this point? Retire to the boat? He already did that. that. He doesn't know what else to do with himself. So he has no idea. He's looking around. He goes, man, this boat just needs a refresher. Needs a refresher. It's a touch up.
Starting point is 02:16:30 There's something in here. I need new furniture, new something. And lucky for him, there's a knock at the door. And who is it? It's Dexter Manley, interior designer from New York City. And he says, how is it you've come to arrive here? Holy shit. Dude, you are. You're white trash. I'm sorry. I'm going to say it. You're as white trash as the dumpy blonde girl over here on your guy. The one with the air dried pussy as the papers.
Starting point is 02:17:03 I think the papers said that right. Either way, Derek, I'm sorry, but this is embarrassing. You're embarrassing at this point. Operation shutdown, you need to do that with yourself and your drugs and all of that because it's ugly. Vince didn't even want to come with me today. I said where I was going. I was like, are you coming, Vince? And he's like, no, I'm good on him.
Starting point is 02:17:22 You've offended him. It's sad. It's really sad. He doesn't want anybody who wouldn't put effort in and neither do I. It's gone. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 02:17:31 Bye chubby white girl. I have to go now. And then poof. Put your pussy away. Thank you. And then poof in a cloud of boas and all sorts of shit here.
Starting point is 02:17:42 Crack pipes with residue in him. He's gone. And Derek is shocked. He's very upset about that. He didn't like that at all. Some time goes by for Derek. He doesn't get in trouble for a while. then December 1st, 2022, he's arrested again.
Starting point is 02:17:57 Oh. On this one here, according to a report from the Hernando County Sheriff's Department, just after 4.30 p.m., at least he's in the afternoon now, on November 16th, a deputy on a routine patrol noticed a blue diixi, D-I-X-I-Brand motor scooter. Oh. Now he's on a motor scooter. A moped? A fucking moped headed northbound on Jefferson Street in Brooksville. The detective also noticed that the vehicle had no Florida tag and that its male driver was not wearing protective eyewear while operating it. Right. You can't do that.
Starting point is 02:18:38 During a subsequent traffic stop in the parking lot of a liquor store appropriately here on Jefferson Street, the driver identified himself as 53-year-old Derek Bell. Bell later told the deputy he had purchased the motorbike from someone about a month ago. but could not remember the name of the seller and could not produce a bill of sale. I just have this thing. Bell did produce an identity card but told the deputy that he was operating the vehicle without a license because he was suspended
Starting point is 02:19:05 back in November of 2015 after he failed to pay some traffic tickets. This is what it's fallen into. Unauthorized scooter use at this point. While their conversation continued, the deputy noticed that Bell kept putting his right hand into the pocket of his shorts. When the deputy tried to handcuff him, Bell walked away from the deputy.
Starting point is 02:19:28 I'm going to go. I'm going to go over here. As he attempted to walk away, the deputy noticed that Bell's right hand was clenched around a clear plastic baggie. Uh-oh. The deputy was later able to handcuff Bell who released the baggie. Field testing revealed the bag contained a yellowish white substance that tested positive for crack cocaine. Cocaine, yeah. Yep.
Starting point is 02:19:50 It's got crack on him. The bell was subsequently arrested and booked into the Hernando County Detention Center on a single count of cocaine possession, and he's freed on bond. He was supposed to go December 6th, 2002 to his court date. That's where we are with that one. Now, you know, I think maybe he got a bum rap in a couple of places. You know what I mean? A couple of places. And yeah, who cares if he's got a couple of crack pipes with his lady of the night?
Starting point is 02:20:19 Who gives a shit at that point? You know, whatever. But, you know, at some point, I mean, I don't feel bad for him. Not nearly as bad as I feel. Oh, Jesus. How many could there possibly be? We're only going to do a couple because there's an 8 million of them. Derek Bell, senior manager at Accenture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Starting point is 02:20:39 And then Derek Reginald Bell, a British race car driver. Oh. He won the Lamont's 24-hour five times and the Daytona 24 three times. and the world sports car championship twice. He also raced in Formula One for the Ferrari, McLaren, and techno teams, and had been described by fellow racer as one of the most like drivers of his generation. Very on Derek Bell-like. No yachts in that guy's life?
Starting point is 02:21:09 He's got to have something here. Now, here's the thing. He failed to appear on December 6th for his court date. So as of right now, there's a page up that says failure to appear, possession of a controlled substance, no bond, and he's a fucking wanted man. He's an absconder right now? A cash reward for information that leads to the location and arrest of this fugitive. You can call crime stoppers at 866990 tips or dial just tips from a cell phone or board anonymously. you can also click here.
Starting point is 02:21:47 You get a cash reward of up to five grand, and it says submit a tip under it, wanted on his fucking poster. Keep an eye out there for a bean pole with a squash head, possibly baggy-eyed, maybe wandering around with a chubby white woman air-drying her pussy. More than likely, a chubby-thied white woman air-drying a pussy. Wow.
Starting point is 02:22:09 It says he has an estimated net worth. We didn't see anything. if he did turn himself in or they found him, we don't know. According to the media and what you can find, he's still a fugitive. Wow. We don't know. It says he has a net worth of $5 to $10 million, which is impossible. He had a million dollar boat.
Starting point is 02:22:30 He made 30 in his career. Take away 15 for taxes and agents. He bought his mom a house. bought his brother's shit. Cars. A hundred gator shoes. A hundred gator shoes. Diamonds.
Starting point is 02:22:42 houses, boats, yachts, cocaine. That boat... Chubby white girls don't come cheap. No, you got to park that boat somewhere. The maintenance on that boat. I thought you were going to say, got to park
Starting point is 02:22:55 chubby white girl somewhere. That's going to be like what. Got to park that boat and that gal somewhere. That's amazing. That is fucking amazing. So, anyway, can't get enough of Derek Bell. Wow. You can go ahead.
Starting point is 02:23:12 and get Derek Bell's rookie card. It's a Donris 91, real terrible set. Rated rookie, 99 cents. Is that the red ones? No, blue boarders. Oh, yeah, the blue boarders. Those are awful. They're not good cards.
Starting point is 02:23:27 1998 chrome refractor tops to number 299, $8.95 cents. It's a fancy one. And a Derek Bell signed Blue Jays jersey. Oh. for the 92-93 Blue Jays, only $7499 plus $10 shipping, which we might need that. We might need that for the studio. That's awesome. We have like Mike Richardson, but we have tons of autographs of alumni.
Starting point is 02:23:54 So we might have to add that to the fucking group here because Derek was fun. He's a goddamn fun guy. So anyway, there you go, everybody. That is Derek Bell. And we promised you a fun kind of light, crazy 90s. He's a party. That's for sure. party.
Starting point is 02:24:09 Yeah. Just his quotes were amazing. He was so much fucking fun. So if you like this show or any of the shows we've done, please get on whatever app you're on. Give us five stars. It's so helpful. We don't know why, but it is. Trust me.
Starting point is 02:24:21 You don't have to say anything crazy. No. No. Tell us where you would hide your crack pipes in the car. Yeah. Behind your seat. Where do they go? Derek Bell Quiet quit.
Starting point is 02:24:30 That's fine. He invented it. He invented quiet quitting. He invented quiet quitting in Wright Field in Pittsburgh. So do that. Follow us on social media at Crime in Sports. What would that do for us? Nothing monetarily apart from murder you. It would kill me. I mean, people would probably listen to it. It'd be funny. I mean, I think we'd get people that never listened before to listen to the show, but it's interesting. It's a concept. No one else ever thought of it. And that's not getting us a yacht, James. I don't know. We'll
Starting point is 02:26:58 see. So we're not doing that. So prisoner dating game time, everybody's favorite. I take four bachelors and four bachelorettes, line them up in front of Jimmy. And the only thing that any of them have in common is they are currently incarcerated violent felons looking for love. And what Jimmy does, I'm going to read him everything, and he is going to choose one bachelor and one bachelorette based solely. And I mean solely on the, they just get to see their pictures, anything. Solely on the profile, they write themselves. Then we get to find out who they are and what they did and how bad of a decision he's made. And it's fucking hilarious.
