Crime in Sports - To Punch A Predator - Kevin Mitchell - Part 3

Episode Date: September 22, 2026

This week, we finish this tale with attitude becoming more important than talent. Kevin continues to be a problem for any team he joins. Despite always putting up good numbers, he bickers, argues, and... worst of all, gets arrested, more than the average MLB team will put up with. He even gets in fights on the golf course. He almost loses an eye & is diagnosed with a difficult disease. But there is one story here, that if true, is one of the worst, most vile things an athlete on this show has ever done!!   Have your attitude get in the way of your baseball ability, beat up a pedophile, before you even know he's a pedophile, and be accused of one of the sickest, and most heartless things that it's possible to do with Kevin Mitchell - Part 3!!   Check us out, every Tuesday! Starting point is 00:00:10 Hello, everybody, and welcome back to crime in sports. Yay! Yay, indeed, Jimmy. Yay, indeed. My name is James Petro Gallo. I'm here with my co-host. I'm Jimmy Wiseman. Thank you, folks, so much for joining us today.
Starting point is 00:00:35 On another crazy edition of Crime and Sports, we'll finish up Kevin Mitchell today. This is going to be a lot of fun. We have one of the most disgusting stories in the history of sports to talk about today, which is crazy and a lot going on here. So we'll get to everything and more. And then every other week you get one crime in sports, one small town murder as well.
Starting point is 00:02:10 So, and you get it all, everybody. This week for crime and sports, we are going to be talking about the murder of a baseball player's family. And the way they caught the murderer and what he was doing when he was caught is absolutely insane and bonkers. You'll hear that. Then for small town murder, because it's going to be Halloween coming up here, it's going to come out in October. We're going to do the trick-or-treat murders, which are kind of a little bit old-timey where people did this whole murder thing based on around Halloween just as a distraction. So they thought they would think that maybe it was something to do with that. It's very interesting.
Starting point is 00:02:42 We'll talk about that and everything else. Patreon.com slash crime in sports. And if you subscribe, you get all the shows we put out. Crime and Sports, your stupid opinions, both small town murders, all ad free with that Patreon as well. And on top of that, you get a shout out at the end of the show. And there you go. So that's what you get. Patreon.com slash crime in sports.
Starting point is 00:03:04 That said, let's get to it. Here we go. Kevin Mitchell is coming at you here. We left off. He's in Cincinnati. and he's starting to overstay his welcome here already in Cincinnati. A small slide, yeah. A little small slide here.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Yeah, his attitude is starting to get to be a problem. It's getting in the way. Getting in the way. And a lot of the coaches have said it. That's why he went from so with that much talent to go bounce around as much as he did. Yeah. He's got to be a problem. That's the only reason that would happen.
Starting point is 00:03:36 It just has never happened in history before. So, or at least in the last. 60, 80 years. So basically, here's an article that says in less than a year, Kevin Mitchell has become Cincinnati's latest Eric Davis, which, by the way, was a tremendously amazing player, Eric Davis. He was great. Yeah. Great player.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Eric Davis, Rob Dibble, they were all on the same team together and they were doing great. Didn't Eric Davis get cancer or something? That's what kind of put him out for a little while and he wasn't as good when he came back. I thought he had something like that. Did he play third base? What he played? He's an outfielder, but he had, he was at first few. years of his career. We were absolutely
Starting point is 00:04:13 a few of the best first few years of anybody's career. Like he was amazing and then he fell off pretty hard. He was fast. He had speed. He could have for power. He was a great fielder. So they say some players attract controversy. Mitchell opens the door and invites it into his living room.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Inviting controversy. He puts out a cheese plate for it. Yeah. Oh shit. There is no sympathy here for Kevin Mitchell. No love for the Michelin of the Michelin man, which is what they're calling him, because he's fat and named Mitchell.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Mitchell has officially heard enough. He said, quote, I'm not nobody's pick-on dog. I've never heard that term before, ever. Never heard that before. I'm not nobody's pick-on dog. Okay. He said sitting there, he's had to take a ton
Starting point is 00:05:03 of cortisone shots since March. He's taken seven of them, you know, to fix him, basically. So in his whatever what the fuck is he getting the shit into
Starting point is 00:05:14 where's he getting shot up I don't even remember here so either way they said this is more of usually more
Starting point is 00:05:20 of a football thing here Bip Roberts teammate accepted one cortisone shot and said that's enough
Starting point is 00:05:26 for me this year so there's also a limit that you can get of that shit
Starting point is 00:05:32 you're supposed to well not for Kev though he says I've had eight four in my
Starting point is 00:05:35 foot four in my shoulder which usually they do them you can only get
Starting point is 00:05:39 three a year in one specific place. That's the rule I know from experience. Well, when I was getting them, because, I mean, I got it. For a foot anyway. So, yeah. They gave me guided injections. They only, they were only willing to give me two. Okay. Yeah, depends on this place. Maybe it depends on size, too. Size, I would assume, well, that wasn't me getting those, so somebody else who's smaller than you actually, but it's still like, yeah, it's still, uh, um, it's probably at different places, too.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Your neck's probably different to your foot, different than your arm. Yeah. I'm not a doctor. Fuck do I know. No idea. I don't know. That's pretty close to your brain. Yeah. Fucking organs, too. So that's what he said. So that's the injury catalog for Kevin is a lot in 93. They said he's played the bummer of 93 with a broken left foot since June, a slight tear in his left rotator cuff.
Starting point is 00:06:27 And he's taken eight shots. And yet, it says that he's still a surprise and a disappointment to some people inside the team and out that Kevin Mitchell is not. Lou Gehrig, not playing every day. They said, it's amazing, as bad as the Reds have been, that on August 23rd, anyone can see that they keep calling the summer of 93, the bummer of 93. They think that's very clever in this article. They really do. This guy was like, I got it, I got the bit.
Starting point is 00:06:57 It's a runner, don't worry. It's going to go all the way through it. You're going to love it. Check it out. I love it. You're like, yeah, I see what you're doing. Yeah. He thought he was clever and he's trying to space.
Starting point is 00:07:09 him and I bet there's three. You know what I mean? Like, we know what you're doing, motherfucker. I see what you're trying to do. Yeah, I see you. I see you. They say that as Mitchell's personal responsibility,
Starting point is 00:07:19 or even that Mitchell is any more guilty than anyone else, when nine players skip a mandatory workout, things have deteriorated way past Kevin Mitchell. Oh. See, your owner's an awful person, too. Maybe that's why. They said, fuck that bitch. I'm not showing up so she can fucking call me the N-word.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Fuck that. I'm going home. The bummer. The bummer. The question was put to him this way. You're hitting 3.46 and leading the team in home runs. Do you think it's strange that people see you as the biggest problem here? And Mitchell said, who?
Starting point is 00:07:49 Fans, players? Who? Who is it? And he said players are disappointed in my season? Are they doing any better? Have they put up any kind of numbers that I put up? Anybody in the clubhouse right now would love the numbers I have. They said two small circular bandages mark the spots where Mitchell has taken
Starting point is 00:08:07 cortisone shots in his shoulder just since Friday. Lately, he has more holes in him than a bum who gives blood. This guy thinks he is hilarious. Who wrote this fucking thing? Hold on a second. I got to find. Paul Daughtry, you are a douchebag and not a comedy writer. Paul Dutri thinks that bums that give blood have less than two holes.
Starting point is 00:08:30 All right. Yeah, no shit. He has missed 36 games. He's also made 90, barring further. Calamity will play in more games than teammates Barry Larkin, Hal Morris, and Bobby Kelly. Roberto, I think that's Roberto Kelly. Because he got traded. He said, I'm changing my name
Starting point is 00:08:48 to Bobby. I got out of New York. He will have better statistics than almost everyone else. He will also lead the team in most gripes against. Mitchell said, we've got players on this team that haven't played a goddamn game. They haven't pitched a game. I'm tired all his bull. It takes nine guys to win a ball.
Starting point is 00:09:07 game, not one. I'm not going to let them put that fucking pressure on me anymore. Everything I do is magnified. You know what? Let's give them in their own words for the second part. He's screaming. He's fucking on one here. So in their own words, quote, everything I do gets magnified. I can't carry a team a whole year. They didn't bring me here to do that. If there are people in here who have got something to say to me, I wish they'd be man enough to say it to my face. I wish they would. Say it to my face.
Starting point is 00:09:38 So there you go. Mitchell is no angel. Probably he had similar problems in Seattle last year in San Francisco the year before that. It's probably in every place he's ever been here. So he says he wonders why he'll never, he's ever able to settle down. But they said any team trading for Kevin Mitchell knows what they're getting. A guy who can be a devastating hitter, studies hitting, knows pitchers. Unlike a lot of pitchers, he has an idea of what he wants to do every time he walks up to
Starting point is 00:10:03 the plate. Mitchell can also be irresponsible. Mitchell's personal sense of time does not square with accepted standards. Okay. And he shows up when he wants to. Accepted standards. You know, of time.
Starting point is 00:10:18 See the shining sea. Yeah. We got a time. Six o'clock is six o'clock, wherever you are. Yeah. If Mitchell owns a watcher a clock, it's news to me. We get it. He's late.
Starting point is 00:10:27 When Mitchell returns home to San Diego or, quote, salty D, as he calls it, What? Salty D? I mean, that, apart from the obvious. I mean, he's from there. Maybe that's some sort of local colloquialism, but salty D sounds,
Starting point is 00:10:45 you know what that sounds like, you know, the bummer of fun, I guess. I don't know. He seems to have inordinate difficulty leaving. He took five days in March to give a court deposition. The lawyers must have asked him to recite the history of the world. He showed up in Florida in March.
Starting point is 00:11:02 wearing three chins. I thought it said chains. I was like, fuck do you care what he's wearing. Three chins is a little different, though. This did not help his foot or his relationship with his teammates or fans. Occasionally, Mitchell needed a hard hat in left field. Because he's not playing well out there, apparently.
Starting point is 00:11:19 None of this is a surprise, given Mitchell's history. Mitchell is a pleasant guy, a funny guy. He's also very different, and he isn't going to change. Mitchell likely will be here next year. I doubt it. Fans and teammates ought to get used to that. There's more good in him than bad. All right.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Well, Cincinnati this year, he played 93 games, 353 at bats. He hit 341 for Christ's sake. That's great. That's great with a 601 slugging and a 385 on base percentage. He had 19 homers, 64 RBIs. That's about all you can ask in a 93 games. Well, that's because he can't feel his fucking shoulder. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:58 It's numb. I mean, you add another fucking. fucking the rest of the season another 60 games to that. He's got 30 homers. He's got 90 IRAI. He's got, he's doing great. My point is he's taking cortisone because his shoulders are fucked up. But the pain
Starting point is 00:12:12 is what causes you to baby it a little bit so that it can heal. He's just ripping through it. This is not good. It also is what causes you to change your swing and your stance. Like if you watch John Mattingly from about 1988 on, he has a different batting stance every day.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Every day, it's sometimes he's in pain. He's that crouched down, Maddie thing where he'd blow up and hit home runs. And then some days, he is stiff as a board, back standing straight up. And you're like, that's a completely different stance. It's because that's what didn't hurt that day. He'd go to whatever stance hurt the least that day.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Because he was all fucked up in the back all the time. December 21st, 1993. Here we go, everybody. San Diego woman accuses Kevin Mitchell of rape. Oh, Kev. What? Heavy Kevv. San Diego woman tearfully testified.
Starting point is 00:13:00 that she was raped by Kevin Mitchell after she asked him to pay for an abortion of their child. This is the opposite of that. I don't want to have your sperm in me. That's the point of what I'm trying to ask you for. Why is he doing that? Wow, that's the accusation here. He appeared only briefly in San Diego court
Starting point is 00:13:20 on the first day of a trial. A civil suit was filed by Linda Chivers of San Diego. December 22nd, 1993, Mitchell says, girlfriend is lying in rape case. Oh. That's the headline here. They're saying she,
Starting point is 00:13:36 she said she's pregnant with his child, and he raped her. Chavers is seeking unspecified monetary damages in her civil suit. She's also suing him for child support. Well, you didn't give me the abortion, so no. That's your choices, man. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:54 You went from 400. You went from 400 once. 400 every two weeks probably shit this he's probably going to be 4,000 a month now if you've got a ball player so she claims Mitchell committed sexual battery battery and false imprisonment on her in November 1991 in mitchell's house in chula vista mitchell said during testimony quote we both wanted it we started kissing and one thing led to another so he says consensual shit's he said she said there's no
Starting point is 00:14:24 I don't even know how you solve that so He is cleared of rape charge in court, it says here. The jury deliberated six hours and acquitted him, essentially. He said, she said with no other, you know, it's just they both have equal credibility. How do you even do that, really? The one juror said her version was just not credible. By the way, she began receiving $5,000 a month in child support from Mitchell after this. Five.
Starting point is 00:14:57 400 ones, 5,000 a month. And he was like, we'll do that. So, 1994, he is back on the Reds here, which is funny. 68, 48, 48, and 1. That's the strike shortened season there. They do finish first in the NL Central, which doesn't mean shit because there's no playoffs or World Series. You know, who else was in first place?
Starting point is 00:15:16 The Yankees and the Expos that year. So it didn't matter. Literally, that's what happened. Brett Boone, Roberto Kelly. All right, pretty much the same team here. Oh, Jerome Walton. that poor guy. The Cubs gave up on him by 94, huh? Jesus. Jerome Walton was the guy that when he was, do you remember him? No. Okay, center fielder for the Cubs. He was a rookie at 89 the same year as Griffey. And if you collected like baseball cards or reel into baseball, it was who's going to be a better center fielder and a better player, Jerome Walton or Ken Griffey Jr.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Woof. And by 1990, by 90s. By the season you knew. Walton was a platoon outfielder and Griffey was the first. fucking one of the biggest stars in the league and it was over by it. But I always liked Jerome Walton because I like the Cubs so I thought he was cool. Also not to I mean not to shit on Jerome either. Griffey, granted, he has so much fucking talent.
Starting point is 00:16:09 He got to play in a lineup where he could fucking shine. They had Edgar Martinez and Jimenez. Jerome and those guys. Dawson and Ryan Sandberg and fuck. Okay. Mark Gracie because that 89 Cubs team was really good. They lost to the Giants and the NLCS and he was on that team but he just didn't
Starting point is 00:16:25 have it. He didn't have the pop. He didn't have a griffy had. 1994, April 9th, big headline, Mitchell won't forget his friends. No? The weird part is, on this show, that's not a good thing. Any other show, you go, that's a stand-up guy. This show, you go, oh, no, he's going to fuck it up. He's going to fuck it all up.
Starting point is 00:16:45 That's what they're talking about, how the fact that he constantly goes back to San Diego. And he said, I still go back. It's home. It's part of me. If you lived in San Diego, or if you lived in if you played in Cincinnati, you would spend as much time humanly possible
Starting point is 00:17:01 in the worst neighborhood in San Diego rather than an extra second in fucking Cincinnati if you've ever been there. That place is a fucking dump. I'm sorry. We did live shows. The crowds are great. People are great.
Starting point is 00:17:14 That city is a fucking shithole. It smells like shit. It smells like the sulfur and the zoo in the whole downtown. The food is abysm, You people got to stop. I'd rather eat prison food than fucking eating San Diego. It's terrible.
Starting point is 00:17:31 That fucking chili. You mean Cincinnati. Cincinnati, not San Diego. I love a fish taco. They're great. Some of the best tacos in the country. Tremendous. This shithole, what is it?
Starting point is 00:17:40 Larosis or whatever the fuck of it. The worst pizza we've ever had. It is. We've had it in every city in this fucking country. That is the worst pizza we've ever had. Second is Minneapolis. Yeah. And your diarrhea chili.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Yeah. Those two. Awful. It's crazy. The war on pizza that the Midwest has waged, and nobody knew. Nobody knew that there was a war going on. There's a war in this country.
Starting point is 00:18:03 You guys are leading the front line. Congratulations. I don't know if you want a purple heart or whatever. Purple pepperoni. You're winning. You're getting it. Here's your purple meatball. And you got to stop Midwest.
Starting point is 00:18:14 I know this isn't Cincinnati, but in general you have to stop with the square cutting. You have to stop it. The reason why they did that is because they were giving pizzas away for free back in the day. So they cut it into the smallest piece as possible at the bar, so people, it's like having peanuts on the bar. So then they drink more. It's a tavern pie.
Starting point is 00:18:30 That's why they made it back in the day. When you're home, you don't need the fucking center that doesn't have a crust that you can't pick up. Stop doing that. You fucking jackasses. The crust is a handle. It's the perfect food. When you eat it, it's gone because the fucking handle is also edible.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Incredible. Right. And you guys go, nah. Nah, I want to have greasy cheese all over. I do love it. When they decorate that handle with something delicious. I don't let that. I want, show me your dough.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Show me what your dough tastes like. If you're covering it in something, that means you've made shit dough that doesn't taste good because you need to cover it with parmesan cheese and oil and all sorts of shit. Go to like a good place and you eat the crust and that taste good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:14 I'm probably going to get that shit in ranch anyway. Yeah. You're in Phoenix. You're eating garbage out there. It doesn't matter. Yeah. There's nothing good. Well, that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:19:22 If you're eating a shit pizza, who cares what's on the crust? because you need it to take because the dough isn't good. It just tastes like mushy dough. It doesn't taste anything. There are nice. There's like three that I've found. Not near you though.
Starting point is 00:19:34 But it's $60 a pie. It's a fancy place with a weight. It's crazy. Yeah. Yeah. That's it. The impossibility pop in and to go get it in a slice or an entire pie. And the weight is so long you just go home and get fucking borrows and shit your pants again.
Starting point is 00:19:50 And there's a few places that are mom and pot. Like the Napoli place that's on the west side there. That's a good place. It's decent and cheap and not packed. It's a little family place. Probably on fire's terrific. And then you got Chris Bianco's place that is incredibly overpriced, overrated, but it's still delicious.
Starting point is 00:20:04 That's crazy artisan. It's good, but I mean, that's crazy artist and pizza. That's not pizza. That's why it's $60. Yeah, that's not family pizza. You don't take your kids to eat that. You go, fuck you kids. You're not getting this pizza, you little fucker.
Starting point is 00:20:14 You didn't earn this. Get a job. You walk in that restaurant with kids and the entire restaurant will mean you. They hate you for doing this. Yeah, $60 a pizza. So Mitchell said, I don't want to forget the guys I grew up with. They're my friends, and they'll stay my friends
Starting point is 00:20:30 no matter what kind of trouble they get in. I will use them like cinder blocks tied to my fucking ankles in the ocean and I will go down with them. I'll let them just tank my everything. Wow. No matter what kind of trouble, just because I'm here and they're still back there
Starting point is 00:20:48 doesn't make a difference. Well, it does, though. That's the fucking problem, Kev. He said, I just want to thank, just thank God every day that he's blessed me the way he has, that I had someone like my grandmother to raise me right. Again, that's a, we don't know if that's true. And I was able to steer clear of trouble. I've got a lot of friends that haven't been as lucky. I don't believe I should act like I don't know them just because I've been more fortunate than they've been. Well, if you'd
Starting point is 00:21:13 like to keep your fortunateness, you can't let people take it out. There's a difference between ignoring your friends and living your own life. Exactly. It doesn't mean you can't talk to them on the phone sometimes or whatever, but you can't go hang out in the hood all the time and be like, yeah, no, I'm, to send him a Christmas card. Yeah, I'm still one of you guys. No, you're not. You're a robbery target, as a matter of fact. I'd rather you weren't around. You're drawing attention to us. That's what I mean. We're trying to do crime. Yeah, we're fucking idiots. We're all wanted. We're trying to do crime and you're a famous guy. Get the fuck out of here, dude. You're trying to hide from the police. You fuck. Yeah. So he said he's, he's as passionate about
Starting point is 00:21:50 his background as his easygoing personality allows. Easy going. I don't hear that very often about cab here. So, yeah, Mitchell, the ball player, tends to accept things as they come. He said, hey, if you could hit a thousand, the game would get boring. You're going to hit every time. Yeah. Luckily, he doesn't.
Starting point is 00:22:08 He said, my goal is simple. I want to make enough money before I retire to be able to go back home and make a difference. I want to give all the kids in that neighborhood what my grandmother gave me. she always made sure I had gloves and the cleats like I needed. She always gave me the guidance I needed. He didn't even play baseball. He's talking, and I don't even think his grandmother was watching it. He said, I think that's where those kids are there now need.
Starting point is 00:22:33 They need to see things I've achieved without doing all the bad things. Well, stop getting accused of rape also. That would help. Not that if you didn't do it, you can help. But still, he said, if they see me as a success, giving things back, then they won't be seeing it from the pusher driving around. with this big fancy car and flashing a lot of money. Say that one more time.
Starting point is 00:22:54 If I don't... If I show them that you could make money the right way, then they won't look at the drug dealer as the guy in the neighborhood who does well. You go, well, Kevin Mitchell's got a nicer car than you. I'll play baseball. Fuck drugs. You know, that's where it's at. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:08 He also said he has plans for his past, too. Quote, I'd like to open up a business or two. You know, like a car wash or something. You know, something that'll lose money and close down in six months like Lenny Dykstra and wind me in federal prison. A place that'll ruin it. Yeah. So I can give some of the guys from the neighborhood jobs. When you fill out an application and they ask, have you ever been convicted of a crime and you put down yes, that's like, thank you, but we don't need you.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I want to give those guys a chance. They don't believe there's one out there for him. One of my friends told me it was harder to cope on the outside than when he's on the inside. In prison, everything's cut and dried. Society on the outside isn't so honest. Wow. He said, I want to give them a place they can go to get out, to get that pride, that good feeling from having a job. A little honest money in your pocket.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Maybe that will make a difference. Well, after the first week when they're like, I got a little honest money. I made $112. This sucks. Fuck Kevin Mitchell. This is a little honest money. I made this money, but now I got to pay taxes. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:24:15 this is a weird headline Mitchell's eye mistreatment remains mystery May 16th 94 The Reds say They don't know how rubbing alcohol Ended up in an eyewash bottle That was sprayed in Kevin Mitchell's eyes
Starting point is 00:24:28 That's a clubhouse prank Yeah That's a bad one but that's a clubhouse prank That they didn't Oh a prank? From what I've heard I've literally heard of wrestlers Doing this exact thing to each other
Starting point is 00:24:40 Exactly I would fucking kill somebody The one guy Was it Johnny Vennie Valentine, I can't remember old-timey guys in the fucking 70s. Someone almost got shot over this. Somebody put... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Somebody put lighter fluid and someone's inhaler. They're asthmatic. They came out of the ring, hit that inhaler, and inhaled lighter fluid. Went out to the car and got their fucking gun and took it out and said, I'm going to fucking kill you when they... Who did it? Who did it? It was a whole big melee.
Starting point is 00:25:07 It was Johnny Valentine was there. I know. I think he was the guy doing it because he's the big prankster. I'm saying, who did it? Because I'm finding you. And there's going to be held. to pay for this. You can't... That's horrible.
Starting point is 00:25:17 There's a difference between putting a spring-loaded boxing glove in somebody's... That's... Yeah. You know what I mean? Cut their pants up. When they put them on, they fall off. Big difference. They nail their shoes to the floor.
Starting point is 00:25:30 It's a pair of shoes. Big difference. Don't hurt my body, please. No. You know. Not my eyes nor my lungs. Don't affect my senses. Totally.
Starting point is 00:25:39 So they say sabotage and practical jokes haven't been ruled out, but it's likely the accidental tampering was to blow. Nobody accidentally puts rubbing alcohol and eyedrops. That's a fucking 100% on-purpose thing. Somebody's going to make an eyedrop to make a squatter? To squirt like you wouldn't do that. There's no reason to put like rubbing alcohol on that to squirt it into a wound. No, no, no, not at all.
Starting point is 00:26:04 You want that on a fucking gauze pad or something. Yeah, you dab it. So Mitchell was temporarily blinded during the top of the sixth inning Saturday when a member of the Reds training staff, attempted to clean out dirt particles that had blown into Mitchell's eyes in 30-mile-an-hour gusts, unknowingly sprayed him with stinging alcohol and said instead. Holy shit. So the team physician rushed into the dugout to wash out Mitchell's eyes with water,
Starting point is 00:26:30 but blurred vision prevented him from re-entering the game. He said, I couldn't see anything. I thought I burned my eye out. Yeah. He said it's still not back to 100%, but it's good enough to play right now. Oh, God. The incident was extremely disturbing to trainers Greg Lynn and Doug Spreen, who've been exonerated by Mitchell and manager Davy Johnson. Mitchell said there's no way you can pin it on them. It's not their fault. How are they supposed to know? No, the trainers did not put out rubbing alcohol in his eyedrops. That's another player who's sick of his bullshit that did that probably. The trainers withheld comment on the matter but displayed the bottles of eyewash and alcohol, which were both clearly marked and did not resemble each other. Okay. They said they've been using the same.
Starting point is 00:27:13 bottle of eyewash for most of the season. So someone just put it in there. Something might have happened either in here or San Diego where one of the clubhouse kids was looking for a bottle to put alcohol in for cleaning helmets and shoes and bats and he accidentally left it unlabeled. I don't look at it
Starting point is 00:27:29 like a practical joke or something done by the opposition. If someone wanted to sabotage it, they'd have put acid in there. Well, we're not trying to kill the guy. They're just trying to hurt him and make him fucking have a bad day, not have his eyeballs. him forever.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Burn out of his skull. Let's know what they're looking for. Wow, that's pretty crazy. So Mitchell said, it scared me, but there's no harm done, so there's nothing to worry about. If I'd lost an eye, I'd have been so ticked off. Talk about an understaff. Ticked off.
Starting point is 00:27:58 I would be so, I'd be peeved if I lost an eye. Let me tell you that. I think, oh. Wow. There's no telling what I would have done. I bet I can predict a couple of things. June 14, 94th. Kevin Mitchell gets hit by a bottle.
Starting point is 00:28:15 He sustained a swollen right eye. Jesus, his eyes are under attack. No kidding. This season, after being hit by a bottle, thrown by a woman in a prominent Cincinnati area night spot. This wasn't from the crowd while he's in left field. He's at a nightclub. He got hit by a bottle.
Starting point is 00:28:30 He missed two games against the Rockies for it. Mitchell told the Reds he was an innocent bystander at the waterfront, a restaurant bar frequented by athletes. His account of the incident had been discounted by the restaurant's owner in local newspapers and on a sports talk show Monday night. So the owner's like, he's completely lying. Bullshit. General manager of the Reds issued a statement Monday night before the Reds played and said,
Starting point is 00:28:56 The Reds have completed their internal investigation regarding Kevin Mitchell's eye injury after consultation with the Covington police, representatives of the Waterfront Restaurant and other witnesses. The Reds do not believe that Kevin was involved in any wrongdoing. The issue is behind us now. Me while, the owner of the place said whatever he said is not true. So, but we've dismissed it. It's fine. June 14, 94, Reds absolve angry Mitchell.
Starting point is 00:29:24 He was upset by the club's probe and threatened to quit. That's why they dropped it. You're like, all right, never mind. Fuck it. He's like, stop looking into my shit. Stop doing it. Yeah. He was ready to quit.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Wow. They said, now he had no wrongdoing. Mitchell, who had threatened to quit minutes earlier, said, punish me. You'll be punishing an empty locker. that's fucking great he walked to his locker and strapped his hitter shin guard
Starting point is 00:29:48 under his left leg asked if he'd asked if he'd straightened out matters with the GM he replied tried to that's it so then the Reds made that public statement yeah he said quote
Starting point is 00:30:01 I told them what happened Mitchell arrived at Dodger Stadium he said I told them what happened if they wanted to investigate fine they can check all they want everybody's making too big a deal about it I'm the one who got hit who cares
Starting point is 00:30:12 Okay. But Mitchell was irritated that the GM had mentioned the possibility of a fine or a suspension if his version of the incident was found to be false. He's like, oh, you're looking into my shit. You're going to believe them over me. Mitchell had repeated that a woman he didn't know hit him with a bottle. That's it. That's all he said.
Starting point is 00:30:30 So he's like, you're going to punish an empty locker. He said, I go in there and tell the truth and they're ticked off at me. Until I get this stuff off my chest, I'm not going out there. I'm close to home, San Diego, and I'll go. come talk to me like a grown man. I'm a grown man. Okay. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:30:46 The waterfront proprietor, Jeff Ruby, who told the inquirer that Mitchell knew the woman involved, again contradicted Mitchell's story Monday. Quote, this gal started cussing. He said something back and maybe tossed a little liquid from his glass. We don't know for sure. And she retaliated. Oh. Yeah. This wasn't came from the other side of the bar, hit him in the head.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Oh, no. That's what he's trying to say. He instigated some shit and got dr. drilled in the face, huh? Allegedly. They said he never laid a finger on her. They got into an argument and she smashes him with a beer mug.
Starting point is 00:31:18 That's all. He found himself an aggressive chick. He said the true story doesn't hurt Kevin Mitchell's reputation, nor does it warrant a a fight or a suspension from the red. So he's like, I don't understand why he's lying. Right. When he's that he didn't do anything.
Starting point is 00:31:32 He said it's not like he choked her and she hit him with a beer mug or something. The Dayton Daily News said two unidentified players confirmed that Mitchell started the fuss by tossing a drink at the woman. Players on his own team said that. Mitchell said, people are going to say what they want. You're going to hear all kinds of stuff.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Kevin Mitchell, this is one of these incidents that you'll see happen where people will say a detailed thing of what happened and he'll say, none of that shit happened, none of it. That didn't happen at all. Not at all. And they'll go, but I was there. And he'll go, didn't happen. And they go, okay, wait until you hear the one. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:32:08 Asked if he believed that athletes. are targets when they enter a public establishment. He said, oh, yeah. He said, quote, we can't win in this world. We're up against the wall every day. Every day. We're only making millions of dollars while every woman with a fucking hot pair of tits
Starting point is 00:32:24 tries to fuck us. It's impossible to be me. It's impossible. How do I do it? I have to go home of my mansion and think about this for a while. Should I take the Bentley or the rolls? Up against the wall, like fucking group home.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Up against the wall. Okay. That is an old rap reference. Let's see. 1994, 95 games played. So three years in a row, he's had 99, 93, 95 games played. He's not an everyday player anymore. No.
Starting point is 00:32:51 It seems like. It's 326 this year. Okay. 30 homers and 95 games. Oh, my God. A home runner with three games. That's pretty goddamn good. 77 RBI.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Not bad. 429 on base percentage. He jacked that shit up by almost 50 points. That's huge. 681 slugging. He's got an OPS of over a thousand, which is excellent. And he is, despite only playing 95 games, he's ninth in MVP voting. Shit.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Behind who? I don't know. Eight other guys, I have no idea. I mean, this is 90. Oh, because he only played 95 games because that's the strikes starting short and short in season. So he had a good a game as good a fucking thing as anybody. Matt Williams had like 40-something home runs with the 41 home runs, I think,
Starting point is 00:33:38 because they were talking about he could, you know, break the record that year. So I know he was pretty much at the forefront of that. October 25th, 1994, granted free agency. Too much of a problem. Oh, he's ready to go. Think about this. He's coming off a top 10 MVP voted season. He's in the top 10 in MVP voting, hitting over 320, all these homers killing it.
Starting point is 00:34:01 He ends up signing with the Fuka, Oka, Dai'e Hawks of Japan. the following year. Why? Yeah. He became the highest paid player in Japanese history because he's not, usually guys go over there when no team will sign them
Starting point is 00:34:17 because they suck. He went there when he's still hitting 30 home runs in America, so they were signing. Huh. Yeah. On a high profile contract
Starting point is 00:34:26 worth approximately 400 million yen. I don't know. Is that great? I think that's good, right? That might be minimum wage for all I know. I have no idea.
Starting point is 00:34:35 He might have just thought that sounded good and signed and who knows. I'm not sure. 400 million Jesus I'm gonna be the highest paid guy ever Ever anywhere In 37 games
Starting point is 00:34:46 He hit 300 with eight home runs 28 RBI And they said that he drew criticism From fans Because this is Japan Yeah Everything in Japan has put your head down Do it as hard as you possibly can
Starting point is 00:34:58 Yeah He's real lack of He's San Diego Like he's laid back So even if he's playing hard He's still gonna seem laid back And they's fans perceived him having a lack of effort.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Wow. Because everybody there, hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle. They run on the field. They run off the field. It's all hustling. He's got three chins. Yeah, he ain't doing that shit. He's going to get another cortisone shot.
Starting point is 00:35:20 So he incurred the displeasure of team management when he chose to travel to the U.S. mid-season for treatment of knee problems against the team's wishes. Oh, shit. He only spent two months with the team, and he did later on discover that he needed knee surgery. So there you go. He leaves Japanese baseball. So they said, we're just stunned by the abrupt leave. That's the Hawks president, president of the team.
Starting point is 00:35:47 So there you go. He's under suspension now and hasn't played because of the knee injury. The Giants here said that they may be interested in Mitchell. His agent refused to talk about anything. Hawks said Japanese doctors said the injury was not serious enough to sideline him, and the team asked him to go to a farm club to recuperate. He said, I'm not going to a Japanese minor league club. I'm going to have my knee looked at.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Fuck you. Which, hey, that's your knee, man. That's your knee. That's your income. It's very important. That's important. I don't blame him for getting a second opinion on that. Because I think in their contract with the union,
Starting point is 00:36:26 you're allowed to go get second opinions on shit. You don't just have to depend on the team doctor saying you're fine. Because that could be, they might have a different motive than you. Yeah. You might be worried about your knee. They might be worried about the season. Yeah, they might be worried about the playoffs. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:36:42 So they said when the May payday came, I guess 4.5 million guaranteed, which is what he got, which was the highest salary ever paid in Japanese baseball. When the May payday came Thursday, the Hawks didn't have a check for Mitchell. It cost him $38,000 because he left and he's under suspension. He said, I won't play if I don't get money. And that's that. So tough shit. It's a great point.
Starting point is 00:37:10 It is. March 8th, 96, signs as a free agent with, take a guess. What team? MLB. Boston, close. In the region, northeast. They're 85 and 77 that year. Good for third in the AL East.
Starting point is 00:37:24 96 is the year the Yankees won the World Series. So they had to watch that. So this is Kevin Kennedy as the manager here. And old Kevi Kev here. Who's on this team? Christ. Dara Brake. Jose Canseco.
Starting point is 00:37:38 Roger Clemens, I think this is his last year. Maybe, I think he gets traded in 97 to Toronto. Will Cordero, who I think is a criminal, if I'm not sure. Allegedly,
Starting point is 00:37:49 Nomar at 22. 22-year-old Garcia Par. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, these guys, okay, this makes sense here. Did he finish it all out there? He did, didn't he? Who?
Starting point is 00:38:00 No-Mar. Did he stay in Boston the whole time? Somewhere at the end? He may have left to Philly or some shit, but I think he stayed over there. Seems like they would keep him. Yeah. Mo Vaughn coming over.
Starting point is 00:38:09 Tim Wakefield when he was young. Mo Vaughan with a fucking torn rotator cuff. That guy's shoulder was fucked for a long time. Yeah, Mo Vaughan was a tough son of a bitch here. I always liked Mo Vaughan. He was cool. He's an interesting character. I'll say that.
Starting point is 00:38:24 He is. I liked him on the field. I liked his stance all hunched over, all big and burly and shit. I liked him. I put a stereo in one of his cars, and boy, was he boisterous. I'll say that. He's a fascinating man. I remember in those.
Starting point is 00:38:39 Yeah. Oh, go ahead. Go ahead. He sent to pick the car up the, I don't know how to say it. I'll say this. The methiest woman I've ever seen in my life. Perfect. To pick up a $250,000 Rentech V12 Mercedes S500.
Starting point is 00:38:58 It was a crazy car. And this woman broke scratching herself. Oh, God. The scariest and shit. Yeah, the most Tampa Florida woman you ever saw picking up his car. I'm like, I'm calling him, Mo. Some ladies here saying that she wants her car. And he's like, yeah, that's, he told me who she is.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Just go ahead and give her the keys. Are you sure? Is she scratching a pussy right now? Yeah. Well, yeah, that's the one. Yeah, give it to her. Mo, she's scratching everything, man. How you know she's scratching her pussy?
Starting point is 00:39:28 She always scratching her pussy. Is she covered mosquito bites, Mo? Something like that. She guys go in the woods, maybe some poison. Soke. Yeah, I just remember growing up. He grew up near me. And I remember, like, he was a little bit older, I think.
Starting point is 00:39:42 I remember always reading in the paper about what a fucking amazing baseball player he was in, you know, Hudson Valley. So. A big fucking guy. Oh, yeah. Damn, is he big. Stocky fuck. July 30th, 96, middle of the season, right before the trade deadline. He is traded by the Red Sox to Cincinnati Reds again.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Back to them? The fuck is happening. What is going on? here. Why would they? That's so weird. Why? Red's 81 and 81 that year, third of the central. Oh, Ray Knight, the former Met, that's why. Ray Knight took over for Davy Johnson. Oh, man. Both old Met guys. And I think maybe Ray Knight said, I'll give him another chance. I'm playing with him. I know what he's like here. So they got, is that, no. They got a different Pedro Martinez on their team. The Reds.
Starting point is 00:40:30 Another Pedro Martinez. That's not an uncommon name. Let's be honest. Why, I'm shocked. I don't know. Been quite a few of those over the years here. Yeah. Who else on the staff? Helm McCray. Okay, those guys. September 15th,
Starting point is 00:40:45 1996, Mitchell not at ballpark as Reds fall to Padres in 12. Oh, no. Yeah, the Reds obviously could have used Mitchell as well, but the slugger who came down with flu-like symptoms in Los Angeles
Starting point is 00:40:57 was nowhere to be found. That's funny. When they were in California, he's like, oh, I can't make the trip. I'm very sick. I'm an hour and a half from home. I'm super sick. Who's he think he's fooling?
Starting point is 00:41:08 But he said he has a sprained ankle and hasn't shown up to the park yet there. Ray Knight said the report I got on Mitch today was that he still had a fever and a sore throat. And then the next day on what is this, September 19th, four days later, Mitchell suspended for season. Oh. I don't think his throat was too sore. Already, too, the whole season. Yeah, this is very interesting, by the way, because this is a very interesting, by the way, because this is the same time,
Starting point is 00:41:36 and I'm going to give you the Chad Curtis story here, by the way, in this, since it happened in Cincinnati. Or no, it happened in Cleveland. Never mind. I'll wait until then.
Starting point is 00:41:46 Sorry. Next year. So anyway, it says Reds Outfield are still a no-show. He just didn't show up. Like, he's got a job. No show. Yeah, this isn't fucking Target.
Starting point is 00:41:56 You can't just not show up. They're going to notice. If no one is in left field, it's noticeable. You tend to see that. There's a few jobs you can do. that. That ain't one of them. No. So they said his second stay with the Reds came to an abrupt end Wednesday when the general manager suspended him without pay for the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:42:13 Oh, shit. And if you're not getting paid, you're fucking up. That's it. Yeah. In effect, since Mitchell's contract expires after the season, his career with the Reds is over. The suspension will cost him $18,902 in salary. He was also being paid $3,000 per at bat. That's how they were paying him. They paid him an incentive. deal. He make money per hour. Who gets paid per bat? I mean, that's 12 grand a game he's making. So that's not bad. Mitchell, given permission to remain in a San Diego
Starting point is 00:42:47 home Monday to recover from a viral infection, promised the Reds he would report to the team in time for Tuesday night's game against the pirates. He never showed. Nor did he show up Wednesday. When Ray Knight asked if he had talked to Mitchell, he said, I haven't talked to him, nor do I wish to. Haven't heard from him? Fuck that guy. Fuck him.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Fuck them. Bowden, the general manager, talked to Mitchell's agent Monday and was told Mitchell would be in Pittsburgh in time for Tuesday's game, since the club had no communication with Mitchell or the agent since then. They said, we were told by the agent that the player would be at the park in time for Tuesday's game. It was his responsibility to be there, and he didn't return a telephone call. I have had no messages or communication from them. Now, Mitchell... That's amazing. Yeah, Mitchell and his agent want to file a grievance with the Major League Players Association to appeal the suspension. But the GM says, we can't have players breaking the rules. I don't care if it's Barry Larkin, Kevin Mitchell, Lenny Harris, or Eric Owens. You play by the rules or you're not part of this team. I'd rather have Chad Motola, somebody who wants to play on the field rather than someone who flouts the rules and doesn't want to be a part of the team. Wow. It's some guy they just called up from the minors, I think.
Starting point is 00:43:56 And they're like, I'd rather have him in there. The kid hustles. Of course, he'll never play in the league again, but he hustles. Also, that's kind of a fucking jab, thanks a lot. Yeah, I'd rather have you. I'd rather have this fucking bum. September 20th, 96, the next day, there's an article in the paper that headlined, Report says Mitchell's life was threatened.
Starting point is 00:44:19 Oh. Okay. Kevin Mitchell's relatives and teammates are still unsure why the outfielder failed to rejoin the Cincinnati Reds on the road trip. The Dayton Daily News reported that a threat was made against Mitchell's life last week while the team was in Los Angeles but said it was unconnected to Mitchell's absence. Mitchell's cousin Keith said, I don't know what's going on. Okay, that's it. Great. I'm glad we interviewed you, Keith.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Thank God we track Keith down. How many phone calls it take to get to Keith, by the way? Wow. Thanks for your feedback. Thanks a lot, Keith. Anything else to add? No. Oh, well, we'll run that on the front page.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Thanks a lot. Jesus Christ. You're the best. You are the best. So September 1st, 21st, 96, death threat story has Mitchell upset is the headline. He's all pissed off here. He said, who is saying that? He's pissed off at someone saying that he got a death threat.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Oh. He was contacted by the inquirer, not the National Enquirer. I think it's the Cincinnati Inquirer is what it is. Oh, okay. And asked to respond to media reports that a contract that had been put on his life. He said, my friends had to call and tell me about it. There ain't no truth to it. He didn't even know. He said he wasn't told of the Dayton Daily News report on the threat until his sister woke him up Friday morning. He said the FBI said Friday that it was aware of an alleged threat on Mitchell's
Starting point is 00:45:44 life, but it was not investigating. They're like, yeah, he could take care of it. He's fine. He's got it. Tell one of those guys from the car wash to go take care of it. They'll think Got that. Manager Ray Knight was furious. The news leaked after he met with Mitchell last week. He said, I know Mitch was talking about it. He's the one who got it out to the guys on the club. But what does he say?
Starting point is 00:46:05 Not true. Not true. He always denies everything. The only people I informed were my coaches. This was to be an in-house matter. Okay. Major League Baseball refused to comment on security precautions. Oof.
Starting point is 00:46:20 The official, an official said MLB Secure Chief was in those towns last week, but was planning for postseason games. And they said the alleged threat had nothing to do with the suspension. Totally separate. This year, in total, Mitch hits 316 in 64 games with eight home runs, 39 RBI. He only played 64 games. So that's not a lot here. November 18, 1996, season's over.
Starting point is 00:46:47 He's a free agent. Where's he going to go? Well, he's going to sign with Scylith. Let's see. I'm doing a tour of worst cities in the country. What's next stop? Cleveland. Here we go. I've already gone to Cincinnati. I'm going to the only city that could possibly compete with Cincinnati for the title of shittiest. And he's going to Cleveland. And big article, just like everywhere he's gone, Mitchell trying to shape up and put his pass behind him. Every year, it's the same thing. Indians hope slugger can fill gap left by Albert Bell. That was when Bell left and went to the Orioles. And Albert Bell, again, big stocky, great header who's a fucking lunatic.
Starting point is 00:47:27 So they just replaced him with the same guy. Isn't he the guy that pisses in public a lot? Yeah, we did the episode on him. Absolutely. Al Rosen said, quote, he's a general manager. I traded for Kevin Mitchell when I was general manager of the San Francisco Giants. He comes from a world most of us will never understand. We may have read about it.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Saw a movie. But unless you're from there, you just don't know. Okay. You just don't get it. You just don't get it. So it's a whole big thing they're talking about here. They're talking about all the other players, Bartolo Cologne's there, Julio Franco, all guys that played till they were 100. So they said, Kevin Mitchell is one very strong man, Mike Hargrove, who's the manager, said, ever since he's got here, he's been crushing the baseball.
Starting point is 00:48:12 And Al Rose and the GM said, if Kevin didn't have so much that he had to overcome, he might have been another Albert Bell. Oh. So Albert Bell was a great fucking hitter. He was an amazing hitter for so many years. Very underrated because of what an asshole he was. Oh. That's tough. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:31 When every article is about what a dick you are rather than the three home runs you had in the last two games, it kind of ruins your shit. The article goes on to say, Kevin Mitchell's a friendly man with a compulsion to explain himself. Is he? What? Is he? Yeah. Compulsion. meaning he's always fucking up, so he has to make excuses, I guess.
Starting point is 00:48:55 Well, yeah, this is the article. It says, quote, I suppose you heard about the death threat, he said. So they nodded and said, and he said, I suppose you want to know what that was about. Then Mitchell tells you a story that says so much about his life, the life most of us don't know. It was early last summer. He was at a party with friends. Remember when he said nothing to that? The death threat didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:49:17 It's fine. Right. Now he's telling the story. Yeah, it's all fine. A gang member was also there. One of Mitchell's buddies backed his car into the gang member's car. Oh, fuck. Mitchell said the guy from the gang was in my friend's face.
Starting point is 00:49:31 He was threatening to kill him, and Mitchell stepped in between him because his size demands respect. He's a stocky motherfucker. And, you know, he said, so he offered, he owns a machine shop and offered to have the gang members car fix. I'll fix it for you. How's that? Sure. It needs to be fixed. I'll fix it.
Starting point is 00:49:48 That's fair. He said, I'm at a shop, no big deal. He said, Mitchell wanted peace. But to do that in those situations, you have to look ready for war. Mitchell said, guys just want a mad dog you. This guy thought I put him down,
Starting point is 00:50:02 so he goes around telling people he's going to kill me. One of the people he told was an FBI informer, Mitchell said. Three months after the incident, the FBI called the Reds last year. They heard someone was out to kill me. Mitchell just said it was all news and told the Reds, it was just a fender bender for months earlier, and some guy who's got a bruised ego
Starting point is 00:50:20 and makes a lot of noise and no fucking worry about it. He doesn't know how to get out of his neighborhood. He's fine. He's basically like, he's not leaving San Diego. Don't worry. Don't sweat it.
Starting point is 00:50:28 He said, it came out like I was some kind of street thug. Like I'm a bad guy. The people who know me, they tell you different. All right, that's good. Al Rosen said, I'm pulling for Kevin Mitchell.
Starting point is 00:50:39 He's no saint. I know he doesn't have many chances left. And those of us who know Mitchell want him to make it. Oh, yeah. Right. Mitchell said, it got so bad that whenever my grandmother saw a shooting on the TV news, she'd call to make sure
Starting point is 00:50:52 I was okay, meaning when he was a kid. She'd say, I saw tennis shoes on a body like you wear. I told her that I'm okay. I have a beauty shop and a machine shop. I'm working with troubled kids. I'm okay now. All right. That's good here. I saw some air forces on TV. Are you okay? Are you there? You wearing the ones? Is that what you got? Jesus. He said the last few years, I let the bitter and anger eat me up. I'm so tired of watching people I know kill each other for no reason. My daughter's a good student in high school
Starting point is 00:51:25 and the other girls make fun of her and call her names because she gets good grades. Where the fuck are you sending her to high school? You should be sending her to a private school somewhere getting her the best education possible. You should be sending her to a school where other sports athletes, kids go and they all know her.
Starting point is 00:51:44 They should send her to a school where they make funny of you if you get bad grades. That's the school you should be sending her to. You're setting her to my high school where I went. That's not good for someone with money. Why is she in public school? That's ridiculous. Ding bats like me go there.
Starting point is 00:51:59 Not even just public school. Public school with like shitty area people in it. Rich public schools, you don't get made fun or forgetting good grades. Their parents expect them to get good grades because they're doctors and lawyers. It's different. Why are you teaching her a lesson? Fuck, yeah. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:52:15 Mitchell said, I love baseball because it helps me put that stuff aside. I like being with the players, you know. I throw up most mornings. I have ulcers. I've had ulcers. I'm just trying to find some peace. I want it to be right here right now. That sounds like a medical issue he's got going on.
Starting point is 00:52:32 Every morning? That sounds like too much, I think. The Indians have kind of a magical year except for that one last game this year. This year, they finish 86 and 75 to go to the playoffs. they beat the Yankees 3 to 2 the defending World Series Yankees
Starting point is 00:52:49 and the champion Yankees in the AL Division series that was a rough series they beat the Orioles in the championship series everybody forgets the Orioles were in the fucking
Starting point is 00:52:58 ALCS like every year for a while in the mid to late 90s and they got Albert Bell there then they play that really excellent seven game series against the Marlins
Starting point is 00:53:09 or the Marlins win it at the end that was pretty impressive yeah at the end of the game and all that. That was a fun series here. Oh, that's one with, what year was that? 97, Kevin Brown and Craig Counsel was on the Marlins.
Starting point is 00:53:22 Craig Counsel, yeah. Sandy Alamar, this team, Jr. there, Pat Borders, a lot of 90s names, Sean Casey. I've always heard as a very nice guy. Sandy Alamara, the catcher that was there? Yeah, Sandy Alamar Jr., yeah. His brother was Roberto. You got Sean Casey, Bartolo Colon. our buddy Chad Curtis there
Starting point is 00:53:44 not our buddy but Chad Curtis Brian Giles Tony Fernandez the star shortstop for the Blue Jays for years and years he's there this year Julio Franco is there at 38 Brian Giles who'll be a star when he gets to Pittsburgh
Starting point is 00:53:59 Danny Graves Marquise Grissom from the Expos this is like the early 90s Earl Hersheiser at 38 from the Dodgers a bunch of kind of really piece of the team together David Justice on this team. That's a good one as well.
Starting point is 00:54:15 Fuck, yeah. Jack McDowell. Remember Black Jack McDowell? The pitcher who gave the Yankee Stadium crowd the finger after the Yankees gave a shitload of money and then they had to trade him because people were going to murder him on the field. Give 40,000 people from the Bronx to finger. What do you think is going to happen to you?
Starting point is 00:54:30 Do that on the road and someone's going to punch you. Do that in the stadium. You're in trouble. Jose Mesa. Wow, that crazy fuck. And then Kevin Mitchell, of course. Charles Nagy, Eric Plunk. Eddie Ramirez at 25 on this team.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Kevin Siteser. Like I remember every David Weathers, Matt Williams. Yeah, because Matt Williams was here before he ended up on the Diamondbacks. They let him go to the expansion draft, and the Diamondbacks picked him up. Shit. Jared, right. Okay. Anyway, March 4th, 1997, Mitchell is his spring training.
Starting point is 00:55:04 Mitchell apologizes for calling the Reds cowards, but not tonight. Yeah. So I'm not apologizing to him. Well, I guess he is. Kevin Mitchell shook the hand of Ray Knight, mumbled something that bordered on a greeting, and then looked away. They stood inches apart Monday morning behind the batting cage, old friends in what should have been their most comfortable place, and they had nothing to say. Mitchell awkwardly searched for another face to recognize, a distraction, anything to get away because he could not work up an apology or an accusation. They just stood there.
Starting point is 00:55:36 Interesting. Mitchell had nearly reached to hug him, but found that. that he could not. Night had expected and embraced the usual bear hug and laughter and received only that meaty hand and no smile. Mitchell said, I turned away. I don't know why. I don't understand. It hurts me not
Starting point is 00:55:52 to talk to Ray like I used to talk to Ray. I always felt like I could talk to Ray like family, like more than family. In the back of my mind, I still care about Ray, but somebody snitched me out. Why does he care that people are talking? This is about the threat.
Starting point is 00:56:08 He's saying that death threat that Ray Knight was the person that told everybody. And Ray Knight's like, I didn't fucking tell anybody. And who cares? And who gives a shit? The FBI's investigating. It's going to get out, stupid. You think you can hide that? So, yeah, he talks about the whole deal here. And, yeah, he accused no one of selling him out, but he trusted no one, he said.
Starting point is 00:56:29 So I don't accuse anyone to do it individually, but I don't trust any of these fuckers also. He said, it's not that he mistrust Knights, is, not that he mistrusts night, it's that he mistrusts everybody in red. So he said, in the back of my mind, I thought we all had a bond. I feel like there's no trust in the clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:56:51 I thought we were in the house. Yeah. So, yeah, he's doing that. He said, I didn't mean it to all the players calling them cowards. He said, the person who went to the press knows he's a coward. He can be a man and face me. I don't think that's going to happen here.
Starting point is 00:57:05 No. He said that given a chance he would change many things. He would marry Veronica, his girlfriend of 10 years. You can do that today. Anytime. There's not like a hot. I'd love to change it. What can you do, really?
Starting point is 00:57:18 What can you do? Too late now. Too late. Can't do it. He would clean his image away from baseball and perhaps in it. He's 35 living on a minor league contract with absolutely no intention of ever returning to the minors. The forgiveness he finds with the Reds then might spill into other places. Quote, I know he wants to apologize to James.
Starting point is 00:57:39 General Manager Jim Bowden and Ray Knight because they're the ones who got him back in Boston and brought him back got him out of from Boston. That's what Lenny Harris said, one of the teammates. Maybe it's been on his conscience. It was good he did it because he knew he made a mistake and nobody
Starting point is 00:57:55 knows him better than Ray Knight. Sometimes only Ray can figure him out. And Ray Knight said, the thing about Kevin is he may do some wrong things, but he always does the right thing in the end. Okay. He said, Mitchell said, you know what?
Starting point is 00:58:10 Because they talked about, maybe you'll, Mitchell said he might just go find his old friend and talk to him now, Ray Knight, after they had that weird exchange. He said, you know what, I might? I did him wrong there. I kind of brushed him off. Maybe Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:58:23 Maybe in Plant City. So this year, he's going to be released in the middle of the year. I'll give you a good idea why. The problem is he gets in a huge fight with Chad Curtis in the clubhouse. Here we go. You'll never love Kevin Mitchell more than right now. Because you're going to hate him in about 20 minutes when I tell you this other story.
Starting point is 00:58:43 So love that he beat up a pedophile first, okay? And I saw the interview with him talking about it, and it's fucking spectacular. He's thrilled? This happened just a couple months ago on the All the Smoke podcast there. He's sitting there talking about Chad Curtis, and he goes, yeah, fucking Chad Curtis, I guess the locker room, there's always a, music is a big deal in the locker room. Okay. Usually whoever's the most biggest guy gets to play what he wants. Not biggest, but most famous. The big, you know, the team leader gets to play with you. Barry Bonds is on your team in 1996. He's playing whatever the fuck he wants. You're not playing what you want. Ken Griffey's playing what he wants. You know what I mean? For guys like that.
Starting point is 00:59:23 There is also the fucking weirdos like Chad Curtis who claim, and I'm going to put a big, fucking all capital letters, quotes, parentheses, claim to be Christians. They get real. offended when they hear cursing in the songs, which is just, uh, brings me to my point. Chalkboard. If you never curse, you are definitely a pedophile. Sorry, all of you. Chad Curtis did it for you. I'm sorry. You go, I have an uncle.
Starting point is 00:59:52 I've never heard him curse. He hates Kurt. He fucks kids. I'll tell you right fucking now. That's what that means. I've never met anybody who was that. People who don't curse aren't pedophiles. That's not what I'm talking about.
Starting point is 01:00:03 But people who are like, eh, ugh. Like it hurts them. They fuck kids. People that judge you about it. Yeah. The reason why they don't curse is it makes kids uncomfortable. That's why they don't curse. Cures them away.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Adults curse. Makes them leave. Yeah. Take it easy. All the pussy's leaving. Make it afraid of their dick. That's the problem. So fucking punk-ass child molester pedophile Chad Curtis is in the fucking.
Starting point is 01:00:28 I'll add Christian to that too because that's what he always says he is. So I'll throw that in there. He ends up, this fucking dildo, ends up in the locker room. Kevin Mitchell's playing rap music with cursing. It's 1997. Who fuck knows it he was playing? Chad Curtis went and shut it off.
Starting point is 01:00:48 So, right away, that's disrespectful. If you shut a guy's shit off, that means you're saying, fuck you. You can go talk to him. For us. Ask him to shut it off, but you can't go shut a guy's shit off. That means I'm more important than you. I fucking...
Starting point is 01:01:02 Right. I'm the big deal. So Mitchell said, I went over, turned it back on, made it even louder. Fuck you, motherfucker. So, Chad Curtis walked over again. Why do we have to play this type of shit? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Fuck are you talking to, Chad Curtis?
Starting point is 01:01:19 So he said, in Mitchell's words, I knocked him to fuck out. I hit his ass, knocked him the fuck out. He went down on the pool table, fucked up his thumb. It was on the DL for two weeks. Said, fuck him. Walked into the fucking office and was like, yeah, I know I'm in trouble. I just whipped his fucking ass. in the clubhouse, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 01:01:37 I think it was also, he said it was another guy, too. I want to say it was Sean Casey, but Sean Casey's real young, but he's also a super Christiany guy, so it makes sense. But I was here he's a really nice guy and not a pedophile.
Starting point is 01:01:50 But Sean Casey, who was hanging out with... And not a pedophile. Sean Casey was hanging out with, I guess, I think it was Sean Casey. Like I said, I can't remember. He came over and, like, was standing there too. And Mitchell said, I told him, you want some two, motherfucker?
Starting point is 01:02:05 Well, choke in, I guess he said he choked him and shit and was like, threw him up against the wall. It was like, I'll choke the fucking life out of you. The fuck away from me. He said, oh, sorry, didn't mean anything. He goes, I saw you in my field of vision, motherfucker. Get out of my field of vision. I'm in fight mode. Yeah, you're too close.
Starting point is 01:02:20 He gave him the dial-on. You're too close. And he's shoving Wyclef. Yeah, that's, gave him one of those there. I'm letting everybody happen. Everybody. So that's what happened there. That's fucking funny.
Starting point is 01:02:34 So apparently, yeah, that's what's. going on. Later on, they said two punches were thrown. Two punches landed on the person of Chad Curtis. Three Indians intervened. I think it was Tony Fernandez was one of the guys. Veterans came around. And Tony Fernandez grabbed Mitchell's like, ho, ho, ho, ho, let's go. That's not beat up all the
Starting point is 01:02:50 fucking all the Christians here. Punch all the pedals. Yeah. So apparently, Chad Curtis in an interview, this was after he ended up on the Yankees of that year or later on. He said, quote, if Kevin Mitchell is ready to hit me, I'll back down. I'm not stupid enough to go toe to toe with him. No. He was saying that this wasn't true because I wouldn't ever fight him.
Starting point is 01:03:11 Oh, I wouldn't allow it because he's... Kevin Mitchell was... Yeah. He's such a badass. I would get out of the way of that. That's what's so weird. He said, Chad Curtis doesn't know why the whims of so few began trampling on the ideals of so many, but he believes they have, and frankly, that bothers him.
Starting point is 01:03:28 He gets into a bigger thing about this of how dare the world impose its values on people. is what he says here. This is... Oh, he doesn't have... This is a guy who fingered fucking ninth graders is talking about this in a position of trust
Starting point is 01:03:42 as their coach. Quote, he does not know why a father would lean over a railing in the bleachers of a ballpark, young son at his side, and spurt such profanities from between inebriated lips.
Starting point is 01:03:54 That bothers him too. No. Oh, you know, it really bothers me? You put in your finger between unenebriated lips, you fucking asshole, fucking pedophile,
Starting point is 01:04:03 child molester cug. I don't like when a drunk dad gets mad at me. Yep. I don't curse. He's a guy that fingers girl. Yeah. And he's driving all the kids away with that cursing. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:15 What he does know is that he will not turn his back. He will not pretend the man and his son don't exist. He will not pretend that music lyrics he finds offensive are not, or that cheaters do not, or that teammates should not at least act the part. He cannot. If his glare and his judgments make people uncomfortable, so do their actions, make him uncomfortable. The fight then will be a fair one.
Starting point is 01:04:38 And if these values of loyalty and faith and right and wrong cost him a place on a baseball team for which he has searched most of his life, then that's exactly what he believes. And he'll live with that too. That is shocking. Couldn't hate him fucking more. Even if he didn't fuck kids, I'd want to punch him in the throat. But this is another level. It's just shocking that he's uncomfortable with that.
Starting point is 01:05:01 Fucking hypocrisy. I'm sure it's a very hot take. but a pedophile should never be comfortable ever again. No. Even if you get out, you should never be comfortable as long as you live. I'd love to follow him around with the biggest stereo system I can blasting the most offensive music ever, wherever he goes. Every time he leaves a fucking house.
Starting point is 01:05:19 And in between breaks with a bullhorn just shout pedophile. Pedophile. No, it's a rapist coming. It's that Mr. Show sketch. Rapist coming. Don't get raped. Rapist coming. They had Bob Odenkirk.
Starting point is 01:05:33 A guy announcing him with a van behind him as he drove to work with the speaker like an ice cream truck. Rapist coming. Don't get raped. Rapist coming. And that should be fine. That's fine. He's a telemarketer. I would giggle my fucking balls off if I saw it.
Starting point is 01:05:49 Yeah. Hey, this is Bob. I'm calling from so and so, so and so I'm a rapist. And anyway, so what I got to tell you about today is a great deal. I'm a rapist. Chad Curtis says, we live in a society that wants to practice tolerance and acceptance, which at the root is a good idea, but you step back sometimes and say,
Starting point is 01:06:07 what is it that we tolerate? People different than you, you fucking ignorant, hypocritical child molester. Anybody but you? What is it that we're accepting? Is anything acceptable? My answer to that is no. Not everything will be tolerated.
Starting point is 01:06:22 I'm just a person who decided that if there's something worth standing for, I'll stand for it. I'm willing to stand for things that are good. Well, I hope more fucking, black guys from San Diego punch you in the face every time you say this stupid shit like this.
Starting point is 01:06:39 So anyway, he said there were larger issues to face. In his mind, he confronted every father who set a poor example for his child. Every bully who ignored the wishes of the majority. Every superstar who simply forgot how to treat real decent people. People don't like him
Starting point is 01:06:54 for it. Curtis understands that. He only resets his mind and, if need be, his jaw. And he said, I would like to see somebody break the chain. Okay. Fuck you. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you.
Starting point is 01:07:09 Utter complete piece of fucking garbage. Okay. June 3rd, 1997, released by the Indians. Yeah? March 9th, 1998. Doesn't play for the rest of the fucking year. Nobody signs him. March 9th, 98, signs with a free agent with,
Starting point is 01:07:26 you want to guess. Yeah, the Mets. Oakland A's, Bay Area. That makes sense. He's in the minors here, though. It's a minor league contract. Huh. So that's what he is going to do.
Starting point is 01:07:39 So, yeah, they're talking about him, quote, Mitchell takes a called strike from Ryan Van de Wegg, who's a dozen years younger and five dozen pounds lighter than the hitter he's facing. Five dozen. Five dozen. 60 pounds. Oh, man, that's fucking funny. Is that Kiki's kid?
Starting point is 01:07:58 Vanderway? No, this is Van Degg. Van dewegg. It's not the same thing at all. Three separate words and everything else. Mitchell said, this is real hard. It's been a long time since I've been in the minor leagues. There's no motivation here at all,
Starting point is 01:08:13 especially since you've got nobody in the bleachers getting on you. Hopefully, I can get that intensity back. I had more intensity playing softball. Let's go. Terrible attitude again to have. Rather than, hey, I've got to really show what I can do again because I'm in my late 30s and everything else. They said, actually,
Starting point is 01:08:31 there are six people in the stands on this sunny afternoon. Another couple is teaching their toddler how to walk on the grass behind the third base dugout. This is the miners. Wow. So he said, all I'm seeing is breaking balls. They know they're facing Kevin Mitchell and I put some numbers up. As bad as I want to hit, there's only one way I can get myself ready.
Starting point is 01:08:51 I'm trying to swing at anything I can. They know if they give him a fastball, he's going to eat that shit for lunch. Crush it. Yeah. And so you've got to just give him breaking ball after breaking ball. He's been playing shortstop for precision head, the machine shop he owns in the hometown of San Diego. What the fuck is going on? They want him to be under 240 pounds in Oakland if he's going to play there, they said.
Starting point is 01:09:16 Wow. He said he's missed playing baseball. He's encouraged to give it another try by his friends, including Giants manager Dusty Baker, whose team signed Charlie Hayes in the offseason and didn't need another right-handed bat. He said, I would have signed you, but I signed Charlie Hayes. So he recommended Mitchell to the A's, and the A's signed him. But first, Baker met with Mitchell to see if he was in shape, and he said he looked like he lost 20 pounds since last year. Oh, that's great.
Starting point is 01:09:44 He said, Mitch can hit. That equals income, Dusty Baker said, let's face it. We've got to make a living. Why should Mitch be out? Trying to help his buddy. That's cool. They said he'll get his first chance at Major League pitching when he starts as designated hitter for the A's in the exhibition game against the Diamondbacks. Until then he'll be facing pitchers
Starting point is 01:10:03 This is expansion Diamondbacks too Andy Benis is a big star Until then Yikes Until then he'll be facing pitchers Like Vanda Wegg on cozy diamonds Adjacent to Major League Parks He's has six hits in his first
Starting point is 01:10:17 16 at bats this year for the Edmonton Trappers at the A's AAA Club Oh boy Do you know how remote Edmonton is by the way I could guess We've heard it We know a guy from the comedy club that owned the comedy club there.
Starting point is 01:10:32 And he was saying, it's like fucking, like oil field workers. It's like, it's out there. It's the oilers, man. It's the oilers, yeah. That's what I mean. It's out there.
Starting point is 01:10:40 The trappers, that's fur trappers because you're in the middle of nowhere. You got fur trappers in the audience. Fitchell describes himself as an odd, an old duck, not an odd duck. He said he's been enjoying spring
Starting point is 01:10:54 and telling stories to the kids. He said, if nothing happens, at least I had a good time, I can go home. All right. Well, April 5th, 1998, a slim-down Mitchell returns with Oakland. Great. He is back again. And he said when it's all said and done, all player wants is to decide when it's over for themselves. He said, you want to make your own decision when it's time, not have it made up for you.
Starting point is 01:11:18 True. 99% athletes have that decision fucking made for them, though. Yeah. There's just no one will pay them anymore for the money here or for the play. The market decides it. The market, exactly. Exactly. They said, well, it seemed a man at peace over the summer without baseball. Those who knew him prodded him not to quit, especially the guys who work at Mitchell's machine shop in San Diego.
Starting point is 01:11:39 He said, I was evil at the shop. Sometimes I was fun to be around, but I'd be there every morning and I think they got sick of having me around. They're like, don't you have baseball to play, motherfucker? Yeah. Shouldn't you be taking BP or something? They kept saying, Mitch, you got to try again. I don't know if they meant it or they just wanted to get rid of me. But either way, he worked with a fitness guru and dropped 30 pounds and improved his muscle mass on the same time.
Starting point is 01:12:04 And the A's manager, General Manager, Billy Bean, money ball guy, Brad Pitt there in the movie, said it was a no-risk, high-yield kind of deal. He signed to a minor league contract. If you pay him the minimum, if he plays well, you got Kevin Mitchell for the minimum that plays well. If he doesn't hit, you didn't waste anything. He's nobody. That's it. So, yeah, Mitchell's that. 1998, the A's, he's on them, baby.
Starting point is 01:12:29 Let's do it. He is on the A's. The A's this year, 74 and 88 for fourth in the NL West, or A-L-West, I'm sorry. This is the Jesus Christ. Ricky Henderson still on the team. Look at that, 39 years old Ricky. Oh, Dave Bagginon, Jesus Christ, he must have been breaking down by that. Jason Giambi coming up right here.
Starting point is 01:12:51 He was the rookie of the year, or Ben Greaves's rookie of the year, sorry. But Giambi was hitting the ball like a bastard. by then, Gilheretti, AJ Hinch, Matt Stairs, Ed Sprague. This is not a good team.
Starting point is 01:13:01 I can see why this team went under 500. It's not very good. Not a very good roster. They're cheap as fuck. 98, Mitchell plays in 51 games. He hits 228 with two home runs,
Starting point is 01:13:12 21 RBI. It's over. It's over. He's 36 years old, not in great shape, body breaking down. And August 7th, he is released.
Starting point is 01:13:24 He doesn't even make it until the end of the season. Ouch. Released by the A's. That'll be it for him in Major League Baseball. No more. 13 years. He hit 284.
Starting point is 01:13:35 This is 1,223 games, 4,6 plate appearances, 4,100 at bats. He hit 284. He had 234 homers, 760 RBI, 30 steals, 31 caught stealing. So he's not a real big base dealer here. Had a 360 on base percentage, a 520 slugging and an 880-o. PS over his career. So pretty good career. After he gets released, he's spending a week at home and he says he nearly lost his vision.
Starting point is 01:14:06 He's starting to go blind at home. Is it the alcohol coming back? It's the diabetes that he didn't know he had. Oh, shit. Yeah. He's been overweight for so long and who knows? I mean, a lot of people are. They don't get diabetes, but genetics have a big way there.
Starting point is 01:14:23 The diabetic shit got him. Got him. Yep. He said he experienced unexplained listlessness, extreme thirst, frequent urination, and rapid weight loss, weight loss dropping from 265 down to 227 over three weeks. Three weeks. He lost 30 pounds in three weeks. 35 pounds in three weeks. That's insane. Holy shit. Lucky he was fat or he would have been dead. Yeah. Lucky he had to lose. Yeah. But the reason he's got it to lose is the reason he's got diabetes is because he's got it to lose. That's true. He initially attributed the weight loss to stopping his creatine supplements.
Starting point is 01:15:00 So he goes, my body must have got real used to that shit. He later describes spending time isolated in San Diego, feeling depressed and having gone underground, quote, unquote. He said, the diabetes woke me up. I think the man upstairs has another plan for me, working with kids. The doctor said I could have died. It changed my life. Wow. So he had to do four times a day in insulin injections. He has a lot of diabetes. He's got like a bushel on it. That's a big diabetes. He's got a bushel of diabetes and he's just carrying around with him. He later transitioned to oral medication, two pills twice a day at the time of 2000, which you can manage diabetes for the most part unless you have a really, really bad case.
Starting point is 01:15:44 It's very manageable and you can get it better. Mitchell and his doctors, not better, but, you know, under control. Manageable. Yeah. Mitchell and his doctors linked the onset, at least in part, to prior to, to, a prior personal water jet ski accident in which his body slammed into the water. They believed this may have caused pancreatic issues that triggered the diabetes. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:16:07 That sounds. If I heard someone on a YouTube video say that, I'd be like, you sound like a fucking maniac. His doctor said that? Mitchell said Mitchell and his doctor's link. So I don't think they talked to his doctor probably. They talked to him and he said his doctor said that. Again, we are not doctors. So if we say, I don't think slamming your body into water can cause diabetes to happen to you immediately, maybe it does.
Starting point is 01:16:35 I don't know, but I've never heard of that before you. Can I say that's the funniest thing I've ever heard? I've never heard of that before, right? That is on par with Dennis Rodman telling Madonna or Carmen Electra, this girl fell from the ceiling. Yeah. Like every football player would have diabetes then. They're constantly slamming their bodies. Every time a hockey player got checked into the board,
Starting point is 01:16:59 oh, he's going to be a diabetic, folks. People throwing fucking bottles of insulin down on the ice. Like, what's going to happen? This is unbelievable. Never heard of that. After his release, he played briefly in the independent leagues, where including a stint with the Sonoma County Crusher's in 2000, where he served as a designated hitter and coach before retiring from baseball.
Starting point is 01:17:20 September 1st, 1999, this is an article in the Daily News, San Diego Cops, Kevin Mitchell beat up dad. What? Who's dad? I think his dad. Oh. Yeah, he beat up. He's said to have punched or slapped Earl Mitchell. Yep, that's his own dad.
Starting point is 01:17:37 Yep. The elder Mitchell and his wife were being evicted from a house they rented from Kevin Mitchell. He's evicting his own father from a house. And that's to hit him about it. And his grandma, his grandmother rented from Kevin. Kevin Mitchell and his grandmother. I'm like, you threw your grandmother out of a fucking house? That's low.
Starting point is 01:17:55 In a neighborhood in southeast San Diego, the dispute apparently was over a failure to pay rent. When asked after his son was handcuffed and placed in a police car, Earl Mitchell's comment about his son was, quote, he's stupid. Yeah. Which is, okay, we get it. You got punched. Yeah, you got punched. But he's stupid. That is very fucking funny.
Starting point is 01:18:22 So, yeah, Kevin Mitchell is a mess so far. And we're also going to, of course, tell you about his other problem here in a second. No. A whole other issue, and we're getting to that. I was just getting to the point where Doc Gooden's book is released because that's where all this shit comes from is his book. So we will get into all that here. I can't believe he evicted his own dad. That's crazy.
Starting point is 01:18:44 Then August 3, 2000, headline in the L.A. Times, Kevin Mitchell punches owner of rival team. Oh, what the fuck are you doing? This is crazy. He got an on-field brawl at Vacaville, California. He owns a minor league baseball. Yeah. He struck, I guess, he plays for the Sonoma County Crusher's of the Independent Western Baseball League. He struck Bruce Portner, the owner of the Solano Steelheads, shortly after a fight between the teams had been broken up.
Starting point is 01:19:16 Wow. He was left with a black eye and says he plans to press assault. charges against the player. He's like, I'm not a player. Don't do that. In 2002, he made his managerial debut. That was in 2000, the punch for the Crusher's, also serving as the team's director of operations. Under his leadership, the Crusher's compiled a 49 and 41 record for second in the division, but they were eliminated by the Chico Heat. Oh, yeah. Despite these incidents here, you know, he's, they said that an aggressive play and player development marked his brief stint as manager.
Starting point is 01:19:53 So actually the team was fun, they said. Okay, here we go. Continued involvement here. He is involved with the minor leagues for a little while. He travels, he has some travel teams that he works with as a hitting instructor in the San Diego area. He worked at facilities like brickyard cages where he mentored young players on batting mechanics and mental preparation. Oh. Okay.
Starting point is 01:20:20 So let's get to this part here. Let's get to the crazy part. We've been waiting long enough. Let's hit it up. Okay. Here we go, man. This is, this is, this is, rarely have we done a story on crime and sports that actually has its own
Starting point is 01:20:35 Snopes page, okay? Oh, it has a Snopes page. It actually has, this story has a Snopes page because it's such a crazy fucking story. Well, yes, and we'll say allegedly, but it was written, by multiple people. Doc couldn't put it in his book. So I mean, and it's one of those things
Starting point is 01:20:52 that Mitchell always says that didn't happen before telling you all about it. So I don't know if it happened or not. It's unproven. We can't say whether it happened. It's alleged at this point, who the fuck knows.
Starting point is 01:21:03 But Doc couldn't certainly said it happened. This is, okay, 1999, Doc Gooden writes his autobiography, heat. Very creative. He says this. Drinking allowed me to commune with Darrell Strawberry and Kevin Mitchell, who was a funny but very wild and sometimes very dangerous guy.
Starting point is 01:21:24 I liked Mitch, but I knew better than to ever fuck with him. That's coming from Doc Good, who's a crack hedge for Christ's sake. And he's like, ooh, I know my limits. He's so crazy, he'll smoke crack. And he's like, I don't want to fuck with this guy. I'd heard stories about his background in San Diego, some of which included rumors that he'd hurt some people in gang-related violence. I don't know about that, but I got to witness firsthand Mitch's temper. I dropped by his house along with Mead Chaskey, a card show and events entrepreneur whom I became good friends with over the years.
Starting point is 01:21:56 Mead and I had lunch at my house and we decided to pay Mitch an unannounced visit. Oh, just pop in and say hello. Quote, that was a mistake. When we got there, I realized Kevin was both drunk and angry, a dangerous combination. Yes. Fuck yeah. He was holding a 12-inch knife in his hands, having an argument with his living. girlfriend.
Starting point is 01:22:19 Oh, shit. Uh-oh. Kevin was right in the girl's face, screaming at the top of his lungs. I told you not to fuck with me, but you don't want to fucking listen to me, do you, Mitch said? I saw this and started turning around. Yeah, I got to go. I got a thing. Let's check my watch there.
Starting point is 01:22:36 I am late. But Mitch wheeled on me and meed. Now that we'd walked in, we were fair game. They weren't allowed to leave at that point. Sit the fuck down the two of you. You're not going anywhere, Mitchell said. Oh, God. I'd throw the card show guy out of him and take off.
Starting point is 01:22:52 Shove that guy into him, let him get stabbed 14 times while I make it to my car. That's how that's going down. Every man for himself. Sorry. Yeah, we're not teammates. Fuck you. I'm out of here. If it was Gary Carter, I'd give him a break, but it's not.
Starting point is 01:23:04 So he was serious. I could tell, which I wouldn't have wanted Mitch mad at me without a knife with it. All he had to do is say jump and I'd say how high. You bet. Mitchell's known as a tough motherfucker. Really tough. Everybody says that. He's a badass.
Starting point is 01:23:21 You just look at him. He's fucking strong as shit. He looks like he can take a punch as much as he can give him. Big old head on him too. No neck, big head. Somehow Mitch got it in his head that Mead and I were being followed by the cops and they were outside staking him out. So he told us to barricade the doors. We looked at him like he was crazy, which at that moment he was.
Starting point is 01:23:44 You think I'm kidding? Do what I tell you, Mitch shouted. Oh, God. Poor Mead, he was so scared. I swear he peed in his pants. I can't say I blamed him either because I was worried about how Mitch, how crazy Mitch might get.
Starting point is 01:23:59 His temper was one thing, but that knife in his hand was another. I had no choice but to barricade the front door. We put a couch in front of it, then stacked two chairs on top of the couch. After that, Mitch ordered us to pull all the blinds down on all the windows,
Starting point is 01:24:13 then he ripped the phone out of the wall. This is the beginning of a robbery. We're all going to die, is what this is. This is how banks get taken. No one's leaving, is what this is. No one's leaving alive. Finally, I tried to plead with him. Mitch, listen to me.
Starting point is 01:24:31 It's okay. There's nobody out there, I said gently. You calling me a liar motherfucker, he shouted. Yeah, that's going to help. You fuck. That's like a dude coming up. You staring at my woman? No, I wasn't staring.
Starting point is 01:24:41 What, you got a problem with my fucking woman? She's not pretty enough for you to stare. You can't win that one. Why aren't you looking, you piece of shit? Yeah, you can't win that argument. When someone says that, you just walk away because they're starting a fight with you, period. I gotta go. I gotta go.
Starting point is 01:24:56 He met my eyes with a glaze so fierce I had to look away. His girlfriend tried reasoning with Mitch too. Kevin, stop acting so crazy. These people are your friends, she said. Okay, here it comes. With that, Mitch turned to her and raised his anger to yet a another level. Oh, God.
Starting point is 01:25:15 Still holding his knife in his right hand, he grabbed the girlfriend's little cat who had the misfortune to be walking near his feet at that very moment. What? Oh, you should see the look on Jimmy's face. In one awful sweep of his hand, Mitch pulled, Mitch pulled the cat's head back, exposing its throat. No! You think I'm kidding when I say, don't ever fuck with me, he shouted.
Starting point is 01:25:41 Before the girl could answer, Mitch took. the knife to the cat and cut its head off. Yeah. That is fucking wild. In front of people. In front of people. Company. We have company.
Starting point is 01:25:58 You just cut anything you cut its head off. That's crazy. That's fucking... What the fuck? I don't like killing fucking bugs like I feel bad. Yeah. This is insane. The part in...
Starting point is 01:26:10 Oh my God, that part in... Yeah. I know exactly what you're going. Saints when he slams the table and they shoot that cat and it shoots the cat and it explodes it all over the kitchen. Yeah, yeah. That part is so fucked up and it's they try to make it humorous but I can't find the humor and it's so fucked up.
Starting point is 01:26:30 Why is it so funny than in Reno 9-1-1 when the cat falls into the air conditioning and the blood shoots off? Why is that so funny? You hear and it splashes everywhere. I love cats. I don't want to kill them. I have cats. I love them.
Starting point is 01:26:42 They're beautiful and wonderful. But why is that funny? It was a kitten, too. It wasn't a full-grown cat? They just said little cat. We don't know if it's a little cat of a kitten. Oh, Jesus. I think the age is irrelevant here.
Starting point is 01:26:54 It's a, at the top's 12-pound animal. Yeah. When it's a smaller, you know what I mean, it's even crazier. Yeah. A furry kitten. If you can kill that, you're capable of anything. Something adorable. Yeah, maybe it was like an old diabetic cat with patches of fur missing maybe.
Starting point is 01:27:09 Yeah. That's still not good, but. Piece of shit kid in our neighborhood that pinned a cat down and punched. it and we all yelled at him and he got off the cat and it ran away. I saw on the news that kid got shot by the cops. That's the kid. That's what I mean.
Starting point is 01:27:24 That's a crazy fucking thing to do. That's funny. Wow, yeah. That's fucking funny. Fuck that guy. That's so fucked up to and he did it in front of her, in her face. Right there. The relationship, right? He said, you think I'm kidding when I said
Starting point is 01:27:38 don't ever fuck with me? This was like, I'm telling you this is A for B. It's quid pro quo. You did that. doing this. We're not together anymore. Well, clean, Doc goes to say. I was horrified by the sight. Mitch was still holding the cat's head in one hand when the body dropped to the floor.
Starting point is 01:27:56 Oh, shit. One pouring out from where the head once was, limb still twitching. That is so fucked. The girl was practically out of control, screaming so loud, I'm shocked the cops didn't actually show up. Mead tried to run for the door. I said, I've had enough. I'm out of here.
Starting point is 01:28:16 I don't know what locker room shit is. I'm out of here. But Mitch wasn't about to become reasonable yet. Sit the fuck down, Mead. You and Doc sit on that fucking couch and don't move, he said. Oh, my God. Uh-oh. Considering that he had a severed cat's head and a knife in his hands,
Starting point is 01:28:34 he didn't get any argument from either of us. He seemed pretty fucking serious here. We sat down. So did the girlfriend. And Mitch sat across from us. shooting darts at us with his eyes. Whoa, this is crazy. Sort of like a modern-day Mexican standoff.
Starting point is 01:28:50 We remain like this for almost two hours. No one's saying a word. Two hours? It's a hostage situation. One guy with a knife and three other people who aren't allowed to leave because he won't let them. That's called a hostage situation.
Starting point is 01:29:03 That's kidnapping is fuck, yeah. Yeah. No one's saying a word until Mitch finally started to nod off. He'd start to close his eyes, then open them quickly, almost like he was testing us. Oh my God. Yeah. Finally, for some reason, the dark cloud over him moved on. Mitch half smiled and said, you guys can go. I'm good. I'm over it. We left in about half a second, of course. He's a hope, okay. Well, then we will be on now. The next day at the ballpark, because this was 86, this wasn't,
Starting point is 01:29:35 he wasn't even a big star yet. This is him back in the day. The next day at the ballpark, I approached Mitch asking, you feeling okay? Looking straight ahead. He said yesterday never happened, and we never mentioned it again. Except it did. Except it did. You just cut a cat's head off, allegedly. In my face. Now, if it couldn't get weirder, it gets weirder.
Starting point is 01:29:56 Okay. This is how wacky Kevin Mitchell is coming up here. This is Jeff Perlman talks about. We've talked about Jeff Perlman a million times. He's got a really good YouTube show called Press Box Chronicles now, where he goes over kind of mini stories of just interesting sports stories over time. He's a real sports nerd, and if you're like that, like me and shit, you'll get into it because he really gets into the intricacies of everything. He's the guy who wrote the USFL book, the football for a buck.
Starting point is 01:30:23 We've talked about his books 20 times on here. So it does a great job. He wrote the book on the 86 Mets team, The Bad Guys Won. Now, Mitchell not only vehemently denied that incident described by Good and Ever took place, he then insisted he was going to get, God Gooden for spreading such wild tales about him. Oh, my God. Okay, this is from Jeff Perlman. Quote, sometime in the early months of 2002,
Starting point is 01:30:53 I flew out to San Francisco to meet with Kevin Mitchell, who was about to begin his first season as manager of the Sonoma County Crusher's of the Independent Western Baseball League. For two and a half hours, this is writing the Mets book about the 86 team. For two and a half hours, Mitchell was everything one could hope for
Starting point is 01:31:09 in an interview subject, gregarious, funny, loud, poignant, chock full of stories. By the way, his fucking Bo Jackson book is phenomenal, too. It was a really, really interesting. You have any interest in Bo Jackson? He wrote a great book on Bo Jackson. No crime, but it's just interesting. Near the end of our sit-down,
Starting point is 01:31:29 I asked Mitchell to expound on an anecdote that appeared in Doc Gooden's 1999 autobiography Heat. Before I even mentioned what the anecdote was, Mitchell's mood went from sunny summer day to winter storm. Let me tell you one thing, he said somewhat menacingly. I didn't do that shit. Okay.
Starting point is 01:31:49 You're not free to leave. Now sit the fuck down and you're not going anywhere. Yeah. That shit was cutting the head off a cat with a 12-inch kitchen knife. According to Heat in 86th, Gooden and a friend were visiting Mitchell's Long Island home and in the middle of a dispute with his girlfriend, the Mets outfielder, picked up a small kitten, small kitten. Small kitten. A small kitten.
Starting point is 01:32:09 Kitten. the throat. The body fell to the ground. Gooden writes, I was horrified by the sight and the blood pouring out. You read that. Okay. Shortly after the book was released, Mitchell received a call from a friend who informed him that Jim Rome was telling the feline mutilation story on his radio program. Oh shit. The famous fucking radio guy. Mitchell phoned Rome at his office, which is a terrifying phone call to get. Oh, boy. Mitchell said, I asked him why he was making false allegations against me. Rome said, hey Mitch, I'm getting it straight from the horse's mouth. Dwight Gooden, don't blame me for it. He fucking said it. Blame him. Mitchell was furious.
Starting point is 01:32:47 Quote, how could I cut a cat's head off with a kitchen knife? Hell, I love animals. I'm not the one who went out there and sucked up some lines of cocaine like Dwight Gooden did. I'm a decent guy. Oh, God. He's going to point out everybody's shortcomings and justify his behavior. That's what it is. I'm not as bad as that. For three years, Mitchell waited patience. to face Gooden in person. He says he initially considered a lawsuit, then good old-fashioned violence. He went through his options. At the least, a tongue lashing would suffice.
Starting point is 01:33:19 Seems like time goes by, you can, you know, they'll start to forget things. The moment finally arrived in the afternoon of November 8, 2002, when the two were scheduled to attend a memorabilia signing event in New Rochelle, New York. Gooden arrived first, then Mitchell. It didn't take long. Uh-oh. Mitchell, why'd you write that I cut a cat's head off? Gooden.
Starting point is 01:33:44 It wasn't me. Oh. It's in his book, heat. It's an autobiography. Not a biography, an auto-fucking biography, which means you wrote it. Wasn't me. Okay. It wasn't me.
Starting point is 01:33:55 Mitchell said it wasn't. And Doc said, nope. And Mitchell said, all right, we're cool. And walked away. Huh? Wasn't me. One of me. Okay.
Starting point is 01:34:06 I want people to buy it. when I say that shit, so I guess I'll believe it. You can foil any attempt that he will make to assault you just by saying, no, I didn't hear that. Oh, me. Oh, really? Okay. Well, let me do that. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:34:23 All right. I'll take your word for it. Yeah. Wow. Stand up. Just do it. All right. Moments later, I asked Mitchell about the encounter.
Starting point is 01:34:35 This is Jeff Prolman. quote, Doc said he wasn't responsible. I guess I believe him. But I pointed out, it's right there in his autobiography. How can you believe him? Mitchell didn't flinch. All anger was gone. Quote, I said my piece.
Starting point is 01:34:50 It's all over. Oh, my God. That leads you to think that maybe it did happen, right? He just doesn't want somebody talking about it. Yeah, I don't. Okay. Listen, obviously it's a legend and we can't say it happened or didn't happen. but if I was sitting back and judging the whole thing,
Starting point is 01:35:06 why the fuck would you make that story up? That's crazy. And people are like, well, Doc Goodens are crackhead and all this shit. As he said, anybody else cut a house pet's head off in the kitchen? Is that come up anywhere else? Like, it's crazy. I've never heard it from anywhere else. Then Darry, in 2019,
Starting point is 01:35:28 well, I guess in 2014, he was confirming, Darryl Strawberry supposedly confirmed the beheading when asked about it in a 2014 interview saying, quote, that's a pretty good story. I think that's pretty accurate. Kevin Mitchell did do that. Kevin Mitchell, he's a different kind of guy.
Starting point is 01:35:46 I guess he figured that the girlfriend was acting a little crazy, so he'd kill her cat. Oh, my God. Okay. Darryl Strawberry wasn't there, obviously, but, I mean, maybe Doc Gooden told him about it the next day. You know what I mean? He might have said, dude, Kevin Mitchell's house last night was fucking crazy.
Starting point is 01:36:02 He is outrageous. Yeah. Or they all know that card guy, too. He might have told him. I'm sure he was like, dude, that guy's nuts. What the fuck? Don't go over there. Don't go over there.
Starting point is 01:36:14 I told you not the fuck with that. That is crazy. So yeah, that's the story of the cat. Wow. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm horrified. I can't believe that's not more popular, more well-known than Jim Rome.
Starting point is 01:36:33 getting slapped by Jim Everett. Yeah. That's one of the craziest stories we've ever heard about a player. Ever. Non-n-murder or like... One fell swoop through the throat. That's why. July 26, 2010,
Starting point is 01:36:51 former Padre Kevin Mitchell arrested in battery case. There we go. Arrested last week on suspicion of misdemeanor battery after sheriff's deputy said he attacked someone on a golf course. Jesus, Craig. You also cut an alligator's head off in the In a sad trap. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:37:10 Mitchell, who played third base for the Padres, blah, blah, blah, was taken in to custody at 2.30 p.m. at the Benita Golf Club on Sweetwater Road. A spokeswoman for the sheriff's department said they didn't have details about the assault, including who the victim was or whatever. He's released on bail. It's a misdemeanor battery at the end of the world. but this is kind of his thing.
Starting point is 01:37:33 He punched, arrested on suspicion of punching his father, arrested for punching another team's matter, suspended for punching another team's manager, all that kind of shit. April 5th, 2011, he is going to, he did this one apparently here. Oh, boy. Yeah, he pled no contest to a misdemeanor count of assault with force,
Starting point is 01:37:54 likely to cause great bodily injury stemming from this incident. apparently Leonard Lerma said Mitchell started throwing punches on the 13th hole which is completely against golf etiquette. Everybody knows you don't know no fisticuffs to at least a 15th hole. That's a rule. That's an unsaid rule.
Starting point is 01:38:13 You still got five to go. Five holes is so long. Long time. Mitchell said according to Lerma's testimony, quote, I want to show you who I am, motherfucker. I'm an old school gangster. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:38:27 I'm the 13th hole. You're in a fucking country club. Why do you want to do that? Wow. He described the fight in which Mitchell slapped him in the cheek, punched him in the cheek, and punched him in the forehead. He told the court, Mitchell mentioned he had a gun in his golf bag and wasn't afraid to use it. Wow. Lerma and Mitchell, they knew each other.
Starting point is 01:38:49 These aren't strangers. They took lessons from the same golfing instructor when later in the day Lerma complained to another man how the golf lesson resulted in his poor play. This guy said, Jesus, I'm playing shittier than before the lesson. Mitchell overheard the discussion and asked why Lerma was bad-mouthing the instructor. None of your business.
Starting point is 01:39:11 I paid for this. Go away. He's offended on his behalf. Yeah, that's crazy. Lermott said that they argued about the argument. They argued a little, but the argument didn't escalate that day at all. It was a week later when Lerma was golfing
Starting point is 01:39:26 on the 13th hole when he saw Mitchell drive his gull golf cart toward him with a very firm look on his face. According to Lerma's testimony, Mitchell said, if you want to know anything about me, ask to my face and I'll tell you anything I want. I want you to show you who I am, motherfucker.
Starting point is 01:39:41 I'm an old school gangster. It wasn't until another golfer intervened that Lerma said he was able to get away and call 911. So anyway, he is going to be sentenced to you, sir, may fuck off three years of probation for that. Wow. That's all.
Starting point is 01:39:57 Yeah, it's a golf. trouble still, though. Yeah, yeah. Then Strawberry, of course, the 2014 thing. Strawberry semi-confirms the cat killer story. May 25th, 2016, Mitchell is wistful for Mets days and thankful to be alive. He's just reminiscent. Yep.
Starting point is 01:40:18 This is 30 years after the 86 season. He said at 24, he thought he found a baseball home, but was gone a month after the championship and traded to the Padres. and he said that in the miracle of World Series Game 6, Mitchell came out of the clubhouse to deliver a key pinch hit single and score the tying run. He scored the tying run on that wild pitch. The team meant a lot to me as far as a young kid learning, Mitchell said.
Starting point is 01:40:46 It made me a better ball player playing with guys like Keith Hernandez. I learned how to play smart baseball. He's a great fucking player, Keith Hernandez. Very underrated guy because he's not a big home run guy. He hit like 13 home runs a year. And he's a corner infielder, which they're big power guys. But fuck, he was a great contact hitter and a great fielder. He's just a terrific player, a lot of doubles.
Starting point is 01:41:09 He said he'll return to flushing this Memorial Day weekend when the Mets honor the 86th team Saturday at City Field. Mitchell returns thankful and a bit more humble after his health scare. Oh, that's terrific. He said, I came home one day and I fell on the floor. My hands closed up. Huh? Oh, like a seizure? I get my arms closed up.
Starting point is 01:41:31 How the fuck do your arms close up? Crush your chest? Yeah. Squished in. My leg stopped working and my girlfriend thought I was playing with her until she saw the tears in my eyes. That happened a year ago, December. He spent the next month in the hospital and had neck surgery for a severe disc injury. That was a neck injury that did that.
Starting point is 01:41:51 He pointed to the front of his neck and said they went through my neck right here. They put a plate and four screws to see. stabilize everything. So he's got nerve issues. Fuck yeah. It was scary. I went through anxiety and depression real bad. This was the most scariest thing I ever had in my life. I went into depression so bad I almost gave up. But he was, he said he was able to bounce back psychologically because of the young players he's coached through the years here in his hometown, some of whom are now in college. So he said that's, he said, when my kids were calling me and their parents said that's, and their parents, that's what brought me back. I started off in a wheelchair, then a cane. Now I'm trying
Starting point is 01:42:28 to walk on my own. Quote, it's a blessing, man. I have to thank the man upstairs where I'm at now, because they told me I shouldn't even be walking right now. I should have been paralyzed from the neck down forever. It's a miracle. He said he hopes to make a full recovery and someday ride his motorcycle again. Why? Why do you care? Why not? He's dangerous. Quote, I'm in a motorcycle club. I've been riding for a long time. Harleys. We're called the Hood Beasts. Oh, Jesus. Oh, man, that's fun. On this
Starting point is 01:43:01 day, he was sporting the club's jacket and hat. You know, just a bunch of old guys having fun. My feet are still numb. My hands are still numb. Still feels like boxing gloves. He said he has to go to physical therapy, and he said, you know, about his legal
Starting point is 01:43:17 troubles. He said, I didn't try to get in trouble. I was never on no drugs, anything like that. I was a fighter. I'm an old man now. I just beat up a golfer a couple years ago, but don't worry about that. So once again, in this interview, he strongly denied killing a cat in a domestic abuse situation. Right.
Starting point is 01:43:35 Because yelling at a woman while you hold a butcher knife, that's domestic abuse right there. A hundred percent. That's not a fair verbal on verbal argument. She might think you're going to cut her head off like you do with a cat. If you're armed and making any threatening motion towards anybody, that's super violence. And then if you behead a mammal at the same time of any kind, any mammal. Any mammals? I'll give you any mammal.
Starting point is 01:44:01 It could come in from outside. You could pick up a rat and chop the head off. That shit would be crazy right then. I don't know. That could just be fast control. I guess. That's wild, though. I'd be like, all these shit.
Starting point is 01:44:12 It's really nuts. Yeah. What do you do? Just grab a raccoon and slash it at. That's fucking out. Yeah. He said he called Strawberry to set the record straight, and he said, Strawberry apologize to me.
Starting point is 01:44:22 Of course he did. He's like, yeah, sure, sorry, whatever. That keeps you from beating me up next time I see you. Mitchell said he remains to close to Mets' third base coach, Tim Tuffel. Tim Tuffel was a middle infielder for them in the 80s who just became a mediocre guy. I remember him a lot for some reason. A lot of them. I watched the Mets and Yankees constantly in those days. Former Mets Men Maritors hitting coach Howard Johnson.
Starting point is 01:44:47 Hojo was fun. Remember Hojo with the beard? Fucking A. Bald head beard switch hit Little fucker Might be the most Printed baseball card in history Because every pack had two of them
Starting point is 01:45:00 Two Hojo's in it Switch hit and power hiter Who after a while hit like 230 though that was the problem And Dave Magidon The super boring old first base coach That used to hit around 300 there He started with the Marlins
Starting point is 01:45:13 And was on the Mets And then he went to the Marlins When they were an expansion team On Tuffle he said He's got that Wayne Newton look right now He looks younger now than when we played. He was a big part of why I hated to leave the Mets when I was there. He was a leader.
Starting point is 01:45:27 I learned from all of them. Keith was always helping me stay positive when I was on the bench. Then when I did play, he'd come up to me at my locker and say, let's see who gets the most hits today. We competed, and that made me a better ball player. So then when I went over to San Francisco, I competed against Will Clark. If he hit a single, I'd hit a double. And regarding the amazing bare-handed catch on Ozzie Smith's foul ball, in 1989, he said, I told everybody that wasn't me.
Starting point is 01:45:54 He smiled and said that. Just joking. That wasn't me out there. I know what you're talking about. As for the current Mets pitching staff, the right-handed hitting Mitchell said, I love them. They look like they're throwing 200 miles an hour. That's to you, though. That's different.
Starting point is 01:46:07 That's just because you're old. It's because you only got one eye. Yeah. All sorts of shit. He offered one last smile and said, I'm kind of mad at my mom, though. She had me too early. I could have been making this kind of money. Oh, he's blaming mom now for being raped as a child.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Yeah, yeah. Well, he's saying she should have had me 30 years later, which obviously is impossible. So, yeah. But our rapists don't wait. They don't wait. They don't wait until you're 45. Then she wouldn't have got pregnant. She wouldn't have been hot to the person that fucked her.
Starting point is 01:46:40 Yeah. Yeah. September 6th, 2024, Mitchell joins UVU staff as director of baseball operations. That is Utah Valley University. That's a good one. Is it? Okay. I aspire.
Starting point is 01:46:55 Wow. Their coach, Nate Rasmussen, has hired Kevin Mitchell as the director of baseball operations. Mitchell comes to Orem after spending the summer as the head coach of the Medicine Hat Mavericks of the Western Canadian Baseball League. Wow. He's in Orem, Utah. That's not good. No. Kevin has a passion for our sport and his desire to grow radiates from the first time you speak with him.
Starting point is 01:47:18 He is going to bring passion and dedication to our operations position. We're very excited to welcome Kevin to the Valley. Yeah, Mitchell, he played at the Rowan College of South Jersey where he helped the team win. Who is that? I must be the other guy. So anyway, Coach Mitchell is joined. This isn't him. It can't be, right?
Starting point is 01:47:41 It's not. I just figured it out. This is not him. This is not him. Mitchell brings a wealth of experience to the Wolverine program. program. He played at Rowan College of South Jersey from 2010 to 2013, or he helped his team win the
Starting point is 01:47:54 2013 junior college fucking title before restarting his coaching career. He was an assistant, Juko. He was an assistant coach at Summit High School in Breckenridge, Colorado, from 2017 to 2012. He's been
Starting point is 01:48:10 in a motorcycle gang hanging out for group, whatever the fuck. That's not our guy. Well, the last two summers, he went north of the border to Canada, where he was named the coach of the year in 20203, led the North Division. This is definitely not him. Coach, oh, this is, we're going to say it right now. Coach Mitchell is joined in Orem by his wife, Katie, and Dog River.
Starting point is 01:48:32 He enjoys spending time outside, camping, hiking, rafting, and snowboarding. It's not Kevin Mitchell. And not cutting that dog's head off. No. Imagine Kevin Mitchell having a wife named Katie in a dog named River while he snowboards. I don't think that happens. So, yeah, that's pretty fucking funny. Kevin Mitchell's wife, Katie.
Starting point is 01:48:52 Maybe it is him. I have no goddamn idea here. I don't think so. Mitchell's cousin, Keith Mitchell, also played in the major leagues for four teams across four seasons from 91 to 98, ending with a 260 career batting average and eight home runs. Not bad. Talk about the money with Kev. 1990, he made $2,083,000.
Starting point is 01:49:15 Wow. which set a record at the time for the largest one-year salary arbitration raise in Major League history. Giants were dumb enough to take the league MVP to fucking arbitration. The Giants, for some reason back then, this was before they were bought in the late 90s by the new guy there. Old guy owned Safeway. He was the guy who started Safeway. That's who he was. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:49:39 That's the very first grocery store ever. That's amazing. I don't know if he started it, but he owns it. He owns. He's the CEO of this, whatever the fuck. So Rod said all the time, he would go to him and go, we're not, players aren't products on a shelf. The same in the grocery store.
Starting point is 01:49:54 We are your fucking thing. We're everything. That's it. We're not a product that's different. You can't just, you've got to treat people a certain way. You got to do shit a certain way. Because when Rod was coming off one of his greatest seasons ever, they took him to arbitration too.
Starting point is 01:50:08 Because Rod showed me the DVD that his agent had made up, or was a tape at the time I put it on DVD for him, that. that was basically like a promo video for him and all he's done to show the arbitrators that he's worth money, basically. The Giants like to lowball people. He made $3.7.5 million per season under his multi-year deal with the Giants, Mariners, Reds, all that from 91 to 94, made $4.5 million, but didn't make all that money because he left in Japan.
Starting point is 01:50:39 So we're not sure. They say his Celebritynetworth.com, which we know is useless because it says we have like $2, 3 million. It says we have $40 million or something, which I'll tell you that. We definitely don't have that. They say that his net worth is $8 million. Impossible. Impossible.
Starting point is 01:50:55 Can't get enough of Kevin Mitchell? My God. You can get his 87 Tops rookie card, which I had $7 trillion of those. It's a cool card with him sliding into home while the expo's catchers behind him. There's a cloud of dust. He's sliding head first, right? No, no, no. He's like half up.
Starting point is 01:51:12 He's like got his leg bent. He's like coming out of the slide. Is there not one with him in the headfirst slide? And he looks thin and it's totally not the normal Kevin Mitchell card. I remember seeing that being like, I love to get in that card. It's only $1.69. Oh, wow. And then something we're going to have to get here.
Starting point is 01:51:29 And autograph signed Kevin Mitchell 89 MVP, San Francisco Giants, white jersey here. 7499 on eBay. A jersey? Signed jersey. From the MVP. Yeah, we've got a bunch of. of those like that. They're about 75 bucks when they're a signed guy that people are.
Starting point is 01:51:46 You'd think his would be worth a little more, but that cat story might have taken it down a couple of drops there. And then finally, a Kevin Mitchell signed official baseball says 89 NLMVP. And it's apparently a Beckett witness, whatever, it's got an authenticity thing there. 99 bucks are best offer. That is fascinating. It's a pretty sweet one there. Anything of him for under $100. And you can get everything.
Starting point is 01:52:12 Can't get enough of Kevin Mitchell? Well, go see him down at Kevin Mitchell Memorial Service. What? Not the real Kevin Mitchell. This is I feel bad for, but not nearly as bad for. Kevin Mitchell of Kevin Mitchell Memorial Service. New headstones, cremation plaques, old memorials cleaned and renovated, additional inscriptions. Sure.
Starting point is 01:52:33 Kevin Mitchell, operations manager for emerging products at Paychecks, Inc. Okay. And then Kevin Mitchell, mobile security research at Amazon, who appears to have a mugshot for his LinkedIn picture, which is an interesting choice. And then Kevin Mitchell, public relations and strategist communications professional here in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Perfect. There we go. Yes. And also, this is very funny.
Starting point is 01:53:01 Here's an article from 1989, June 13, 1989. I am not related to Kevin Mitchell. This is an article. just for the record to clean up any confusion, there may be in the sports world. I'm not the Kevin Mitchell smacking home runs for the New York Giants. Although we share the same name,
Starting point is 01:53:19 the comparison stop there. Blah, blah, blah. It goes on to say, I'm ghostly white and had to pay to play and coach at Quarterway Hotel Men's Slow Pitch Team this year. I think this is like their writer or some shit. So anyway, there you go, everybody.
Starting point is 01:53:35 Wow. That is Kevin Mitchell, three parts of old Kevy Kev. I mean, it's hard to say he's up. I'm about as thorough as possible. Bad guy, but he certainly has some issues around women. Anger. He's mad. Fucking women.
Starting point is 01:53:51 He's threatening. He threatens everybody. He's mad at women for sure. But here's the thing. A dude talking to Kevin Mitchell knows where the line is not to cross. You know if there's a badass motherfucker, what line you're not crossing. Sure. Women piss on that line, spit on it.
Starting point is 01:54:09 And then slap you in the face and say, how's that for a line, motherfucker? What are you going to do about it? That's what women do a lot. They do because they don't expect you to hit them. Yeah, because you're not supposed to and you shouldn't. But there are a lot of women who cross that fucking line to Charlie Murphy, habitual line steppers.
Starting point is 01:54:28 Yeah. Shouldn't get hit anyway. But when it's a guy like Kevin Mitchell, you're going to get hit. Stop doing that. I don't want to see you get hit. God, he's. Fuck, he was so funny. So, yeah, that happens so often.
Starting point is 01:54:42 I mean, I worked in a bar. I saw it every fucking night in the ball. Every night. Because then they know that they win. Yeah. Listen to here, motherfucker, and you'd be like, uh-oh, here we go. Is this guy about to, will he knock her out before I get there was the thing? And we'd get there quickly and most of the time not.
Starting point is 01:54:58 But every once in a while, the guy would be like, all right, snooky, pow, there you go. Which, again, don't endorse that or condone that whatsoever. But I also wouldn't get in a giant. I wouldn't get in anybody's face who's twice my size and start putting my head around going, what do you think of that, bitch? Because you can't hit me in public. Yeah, okay. I wouldn't do that personally.
Starting point is 01:55:18 Kevin's so mad at women. He's mad at everybody. He told Doc and me to sit down with a goddamn knife. He punched a guy on the golf course for a night. It's anybody and everybody. Why is he so mad? He's a mad guy. And I think a lot of these times, too, I think alcohol is involved.
Starting point is 01:55:35 He said he was drunk back then when it was. the cat incident, allegedly, on the golf course, 13th hole? Yeah. You little tipsy by the 13th hole normally? By 13 in, you're pretty fucked up. That's if you're starting to get tipsy. So other thing was at a bar, things are here. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 01:55:53 And also, it does tend to be once stories start coming out about somebody, then more stories will come out about somebody and people will look for stories. Meanwhile, somebody else might have just as many stories about them. They just didn't come out, you know. but still, if he cut a fucking head off the cat, that's the craziest fucking thing I've ever heard. That's nuts. That's insane.
Starting point is 01:56:13 So anyway, there's Kevin Mitchell. Hope you've enjoyed this three-week journey of Kevin Mitchell. We certainly did, so we hope you did. If you like the show at all, get on whatever app you're on and give us five stars. It helps tremendously. Helps drive the show up the charts and just let everybody know that you like it.
Starting point is 01:56:30 So thank you so much. Doesn't matter what you say. Say what mammal would be crossing a line for you to be decapital. Right. Up to what point? Up to what point? Do you say stop? So there you go.
Starting point is 01:56:43 Do that. Also, head over to shut up and give me murder.com. Get all your merchandise, get all everything that you want. Get your tickets for live shows, everybody. Yes. We just had a great weekend
Starting point is 01:56:53 in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. That Minneapolis crowd was fucking on fire. God damn it, were they good? They were laughing at the songs before the show and then fucking all the way through. the show. They were great, fucking awesome. Start to finish. We want to take them package up all of those 2,000 people
Starting point is 01:57:12 or whatever and take them wherever the hell we go next. Which will be Dallas. There it is. On October 3rd, get your tickets right now for Dallas, and that one will be doing a Dallas Suburbs case, and it's a brand new live show, so check it out.
Starting point is 01:57:28 It's going to be amazing, or it's a brand new show. Might be awful, we might fall right on our faces. Who knows? Just kidding. That never happens. We've done a million of these. We don't doing by now. So, uh, do that. Also, uh, two weeks later after that, the 16th and 17th of October, San Jose Sacramento, come to those shows. By the way, those will be two different shows. So you can definitely see two different shows if you want to go to those because they're like an hour away from each other. Um, Terrytown on November 13th is almost sold out. Boston on the 14th is
Starting point is 01:57:58 actually Medford at the Chevalier. Get your tickets for that. Still tickets available. So do that. Shut up and give me murder.com. Patreon is what you need. Starting point is 01:58:38 them all, baby. And they're pretty universal. If you like this show, you'll like the bonus episodes for both of them and that kind of thing. This week, for crime and sports, we're going to talk about the murder of a minor league baseball player's family. That's the only thing it has to do with sports. The way they catch the guy and the condition the guy is in when they catch him is fucking insane. And that's why we had to do it. For small town murder, Halloween is coming up here, right now as we speak, it's the first day of fall. So Halloween coming up, and we are going to talk about the trick-or-treat murders.
Starting point is 01:59:11 They're a little bit old-timey in the 50s, but they're like really weird, and it's a murder where they're trying to use Halloween to cover it up. It's very interesting, very interesting story. We'll get into all of that and more. Shut up. Oh, no, this isn't shut up again.
Starting point is 01:59:25 No. This is Patreon. I'm so sick. I don't know how I lasted two hours. I'm starting to. Patreon. No, we did it. Patreon.
