Dissect is returning with its 14th season on Tuesday, March 17th, and this year we're dissecting
Drumroll please. Here, let me take this thing off. It's Daft Punk. Yes, we're putting one of the
most influential acts of the 21st century under the microscope, and not just one of their albums,
but all four. Most of our time will be spent with their two Masterworks discovery and random
access memories, but we're also diving into homework, human after all, and the iconic Alive 2007
tour. Why? Because as Dap Punk confirmed themselves, their collective discography actually
forms a single narrative, an intentional decades-long performance art project meant to examine
our evolving relationship with machines, ultimately questioning how we preserve our humanity
and the age of rapid technological acceleration. So yeah, kind of the perfect theme for
2026. Now, I know Dap Punk is a bit of a pivot for Dysect since I usually focus on hip-hop artists,
But if you're a fan of Dissect, I can guarantee you're a fan of Daft Punk.
You just might not know it yet.
And for those of you unfamiliar with their catalog, I've put together a playlist of
Daft Punk's essential tracks plus a few of my personal favorites that you can listen to before
the season begins, the links in the description.
Now, another thing that's different about this season is that Daftunk's music is largely
instrumental as opposed to the lyric-heavy world of hip-hop.
That's allowing me to spend a lot more time on production and music theory, which I think
you're really going to enjoy. There's a reason daft punk are considered one of the most influential
acts of this century, and I'm getting into the weeds on the techniques and samples that
earned them this reputation. In episode one alone, you'll learn what they have in common with Beethoven
and how to build a synth tone from scratch. I'm also excited to dive into the history of
electronic music because I'm not sure how many people realized that house and techno didn't begin
in Europe, but were actually born in Chicago and Detroit, pioneered largely by black American
musicians. So as you can probably tell, I'm very much looking forward to this season. So I hope you
join me for the premiere this Tuesday, March 17th on Spotify, Netflix, or wherever else you might
be listening to this. I'll talk to you then.
