I care about statistical scarcity more than positional scarcity.
Is I field fun?
Yes.
Podcast is going off the rails already.
They're pop-ups.
They're not infield fly balls.
These guys told you look at Fip, not ERA.
So wait for Glover's sale, but pass on Robbie.
Real quick, Scott's bummed about the humidor.
And pick your milk for breakfast cereal, Mount Rushmore.
They'll be there for...
Welcome, everybody. It is August 1st. That means the non-waiver trade deadline has passed. And I'm Adam Azer. I am here with Young and Foolish Scott White. Remember what he said yesterday? He was like, ah, we already had so much going on with the trade deadline. How could it, you know, maybe it won't be that crazy. Maybe nothing will happen. You, sir. We're not prepared. You were not prepared.
I was invalidated less than an hour later.
That's right.
The most surprising trade of all of them. No rumors leading up to.
whatsoever went down. And that, of course, is Tommy Pham to the raise.
Yeah, that was so strange. It was crazy. Yeah. And for not, really, a great return,
considering how we've come to think of Tommy Pham on this podcast. I mean, we know we've been
frustrated him at times this year, especially recently, but he was in the MVP conversation a year
go and he's pre-arbitration.
Like, he's making nothing under control for a long time.
And the race got him for cheap, so good for them.
They got him for Genesis Cabrera, Justin Williams, and Roel Ramirez.
I kind of love, and they also got international bonus pool money.
I kind of love what the rays have done.
They trained Archer, and they got, you know, hopefully they can make something out of
glass now in Meadows.
I think they did a great job.
But let's talk fantasy.
who's like one or two trade winners from the deadlines?
Okay, so this might seem like kind of a funny take
because obviously he wasn't involved in any trades yesterday,
but I think Kirby Yates is the biggest winner.
Fantasy owners have been so hesitant to pick him up
since Bradhand was sent to the Indians right after the All-Star break,
the assumption being, well, Yates is going to be traded too,
but there was no urgency to trade him.
He's under control.
cheap and now he's not going to move.
He's not going to be the kind of player who passes through waivers in August.
So he's the Padres closer from now to the bitter ends.
And he's awesome.
He's really good.
So the fact he's still available in nearly 40% of CBS Sports Leagues needs to change.
Okay.
Yeah.
And honestly, I know this isn't trade related, but AJ Minter needs to be owned in more leagues too.
Minter is 52% owned.
Yates is 63% owned.
Yates is 63% own.
Rodeus Viscayano is still a long ways away from throwing.
Yep.
I think I saw Mark Bowman, one of the Braves beatwriters on Twitter yesterday, saying,
even though the Braves are hopeful, this guy is going to be back,
he himself is skeptical.
Like the beat writer himself is skeptical.
So, yeah, Minter looks like he has a pretty good security right now.
Who would you rather have Yates or Minter?
I would rather have Yates, because even though he's,
only gotten one save since that trade happened. I'm still optimistic that the Padres will provide
him with regular enough opportunities like they did hand. And I think he's just better than mentor.
Okay. Any trade winners in terms of the players who actually did get traded?
Oh, of course. Chris Archer, I think, is from yesterday. Chris Archer, I think, is the biggest.
Because he's finally out of the ALE East where he's had, it's been such a headache for him over the year.
years. He had, I believe it's a 470 ERA at his four AL East counterparts parks. Wow. And obviously, all four of them had good lineups for most of that stretch he was pitching, including, I mean, the Orioles usually did too. So it was a really tough division to navigate, and now he goes to the NL Central, which has a couple pretty good hitter park itself. But the lineups, there's a lot.
just no comparison to those ALE East lineups.
For his career, he has like a 340 ERA, I think, about that in every park that's not Toronto,
Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles.
And now he gets to face the pitcher.
So you're not picking up Archer, but that's obviously a good thing.
He's universally owned.
And he's only three and five.
So this should give him a better chance to get some wins as well.
He hasn't had a winning season for the race since, I think.
think 2014 and we keep drafting him as a ace, which, you know, he's still pretty good in spite of
that, but, man, the pirates, the pirates are, pirates were dealing yesterday like they were
hoping to win the wild cards. Yeah, I hope they don't like win the wild card and then lose the
wild card game. But yeah, they're going for it for sure. So, you know, going from the American
League east to the National League is typically a good thing for a pitcher, yet I wasn't really moved
to pick up Kevin Gosman, who goes from the Orioles to the Braves.
Were you?
Oh, I would be.
Yeah?
I mean, I haven't dropped him anywhere I owned him.
I've been hopeful all season and feel like there are signs that a breakout is close.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, look at his final 19 starts last year.
It was like a 330 ERM.
I'm rounding, of course, stone off top of my head.
Last 19 starts last year's like a 3.30.
ERA 120 whip and more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings.
What's changed this year is the strikeouts haven't been there, which has led to other troubles.
But the swaying strike rate is still really good.
I want to say it's top 25 and baseball good.
So the fact that he's escaping the ALE East also and going to the NL East, which is mostly pitchers parks, except for Philadelphia.
I think that could be really good.
And two terrible lineups in there.
And the Nationals scored 25 runs yesterday, but they were 20th in scoring before that, or right around there.
So it's definitely better for Gosman.
But, yeah, he's going to get innings.
You know, he's going to get run support.
Yeah.
I think he's pretty good.
I think that we kind of make some excuses for Kevin Gosman.
I mean, I know you can look at the last one.
I was excited about him going in, but I just, I think I've loved.
lost that enthusiasm. He's been a dud so far. 443R. A, 104 strikeouts,
and 1204 nints. All right, but Scott sees something. So, Kevin Gosman is 64% owned.
And maybe you should pick him up. Any trade losers from yesterday?
So, Brian Dozier, we're not exactly sure how that's going to shake out with the Dodgers,
which is a shame because we've been insisting all along.
Hold on, he's going to be fine.
I imagine he's going to play close to every day,
but Dave Roberts was careful to say he's not an everyday player.
And when Justin Turner comes back from the D.L.,
which sounds like it's going to happen this weekend,
somebody's going to have to sit every day.
I'm guessing it'll more often be like Jack Peterson,
and Yassil Pueg,
I think the fact that Dozier has second baseman
cover makes Chris Taylor someone who's pretty easy to sit now.
But it sounds like Dozier could sit some as well.
I'm not so worried about Max Muncie.
People were freaking out about that.
But he's the Dodgers, well, aside for Machado, I guess,
he's the Dodgers best hitter.
And because Bellinger can play center field,
it's pretty easy to just stick Muncie at first base
and not worry about the glove so much.
So I think he's okay.
Machado and Bellinger, obviously.
okay but everyone else at that lineup including dozier is at risk i'm also worried about
travis shawl yeah because the plan obviously was for him to play second base let me just go back
to doja real quick if you wouldn't mind i just want to give some stats uh last three years this is his
ops on august 1st 817 760 last year 708 this year and in august and september the last
two years so that's four months but august and september of 2016 and 17 he has hit a combined
40 home runs in those four months.
So in a way, we know that he's a great second half player, but August and September in
particular, he hasn't gotten hot yet, and he still has a 708 OPS.
But last year it was 760 on August 1st.
He still hadn't really gotten hot, and then he went crazy in August and September.
So, you know, just because he did it each of the last years, it doesn't mean Dozier's
going to do it this year.
But we have seen in the past as recently as last year him enter the month of August
with pretty bad numbers and finish with pretty damn good numbers.
Yeah, Travis Shaw, anything you want to add it on Dozier?
You want to go to Shaw?
Sorry.
But just if you look at the bad above profile for Brian Dozier,
he looks like the same hitter, even though he hasn't gotten the same results.
I'm still hopeful for him, but obviously there's a little concern now with the playing time issue.
And there's, yeah, with Shaw, I worry about a playing time issue as well
because the plan was firm to play second base with Mustakis coming aboard.
We wondered if it was a very good plan, seeing as he hadn't played that position much.
And then the Brewers went out and acquired a red-hot, all-star caliber, second baseman, and Jonathan's scope.
So obviously, you would figure he's going to play a lot of second base.
Where does that leave Shaw?
Well, he might put shortstop, though, scope.
He might.
Yep, Craig Counsel mentioned that possibility that he would play some shortstop.
He has played a little in the majors.
He played a lot more in the minors.
but if you're playing both of your middle infielder's out of position,
I just don't know that that's something they'd want to do every day.
That would obviously be bad news for the pitcher.
So I'm skeptical it's going to be every day.
I kind of feel like Shaw's going to bounce around, spell everybody, including Aguilar at first base.
I think he's played some outfield before, so maybe he even sees occasional starts out there.
I'm hopeful he doesn't lose too much playing time.
And Shaw, you know, in his career not so bad against lefties.
At least last year he was good against lefties.
He batted 250 with a 464 slugging.
This year, Travis Shaw has 20 home runs.
All of them have come against righties.
He's batting 214 with a 250 slugging percentage against lefties.
So, you know, Shaw is not having the type of year that matches the peripherals.
His plate discipline has been great.
53 walk, 66 strikeouts.
We feel like he's been a little unload.
lucky, but these last two moves getting Mustakis, because Shaw's, like, I think we all think
Shaw's better than Mustakis, my guess.
I do, yeah.
Yeah.
He has not been this year, but I think he is.
I think the peripherals say he is.
Yeah, and so, yeah, I don't know what how, I think it's feasible that he sits against
lefties based on how bad he's been this year against lefties, we'll have to see.
I thought the piece going to Tampa Bay in the, uh, or,
going to Baltimore, excuse me, in this deal was VR.
He's on the DL, but could be back soon.
More regular playing time?
Maybe a steel source for people, Jonathan V.R.?
Yeah.
Yeah, maybe.
I mean, they obviously don't have much left at Baltimore.
So you figure he's going to have to hold down the fort at second base.
Trying to...
Because I feel like he was playing pretty consistently.
Yeah, not so much since they got Brad Miller, I guess.
Yeah, 30% own VR.
He had 62 steals two years ago.
He had 23 steals in 122 games last year.
Right now he has 14 steals in 87 games.
So you need – I mean, AL only certainly VR can help you, but you need some steals.
VR might get more playing time.
We're going to go through every trade now and talk about it, every trade from yesterday.
The Tommy fan one was crazy.
We talked about Dozier.
I'm going to ask you after this about the minor leaguers that are involved in who we need to know about.
John Axford goes to the Dodgers
That's not fantasy relevant
But Archer goes to the Pirates
Now on the other end of it
Austin Meadows Tyler Glass now
And a player to be named
Are Tampa Bay Rays
Are they
Is Meadows a starter now
For the rays in the outfield?
He is beginning at AAA
Okay
So no, not yet
But it's
I imagine it's going to be a matter of
A week or two
before he's up starting for the race,
which is bad news from Alex Smith.
Carlos Gomez, if you had any shares in him,
is probably done as a starter too.
But it's good news.
There are two other winners from the Deadline Meadows and Glassnow
because there's just so much more opportunity for them with the race
than with the Pirates.
And in fact, Glass Now is actually starting today for the raise.
Now, I don't know that he's stretched out to go
the distance of a starter.
In fact, I think Jacob Ferreya,
remember him.
It's coming back from the DL and is going to piggyback.
That's the plan for today's game.
But I think eventually they'll each have their own rotation spot.
And Glassnow, 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings out of the Pirates Bullpen.
A really impressive fastball, breaking ball.
Combo, it just doesn't throw enough strikes.
Yeah, we got to see a lot before we go pick up Tyler Glass now.
And Meadows really started struggling after a hot start getting called up by the Pirates.
So personally, I'm not picking up in any AOL-only leagues.
Obviously, you're picking them up in A-L-only.
But I'm not adding Meadows in any mixed league, Scott.
Maybe like a five-outfielder league.
I might do that.
But if he wasn't going to AAA, I'd definitely do that in a five-outfielder league.
Just obviously not exactly sure when he's going to be contributing.
But I think this, I mean, this could be the change Tyler Glass-Now needs.
He's only 24.
He was one of the top two or three prospects, pitching prospects in baseball when he was climbing the ladder.
And I think there's a lot of similarities to Archer, frankly, when he was coming up.
He had control issues, but great fastball, breaking ball, combo.
And, I mean, he was 24 the same age as last now when he broke out.
So I'm not rushing to pick up glass now.
but I'm definitely keeping an eye on him.
And the Braves got Kevin Gosman and Darren O'Day.
O'Day is out for the year.
They gave up four minor leaguers and international slot money for Gossman,
who we just talked about.
The Brewers got scope for VR and two minor leaguers.
The Ray's got Tommy Fam.
All right, value up, down to the same for Tommy Fam.
Probably the same, but I think it's more good news than bad.
I think he's somebody who could really benefit from a change of scenery,
because you remember back in April there was that Sports Illustrated article feature really.
It was just kind of introduced us to Tommy Fam and how colorful of a character he is.
But in it there was some frustration expressed towards Cardinals management,
both for keeping him in the minor so long,
and they wanted to work out a team-friendly deal,
wasn't having it.
So it just seemed like maybe there was stuff happening behind the scenes there.
I mean, the fact that the Cardinals traded him at what seems like a discount, I think, would back that up.
Plus, like I said on yesterday's show, he has made reference to a mechanical issue he's having.
He sees in video, but can't seem to fix in games.
And I think just getting new eyes on him, new input,
from new coaching staff,
seems like it could help with that.
So I think,
I'm still hopeful,
fam has a really strong finish here.
I'm sure he's going to play every day.
So their outfield is going to be Fam
Keirmeyer Meadows pretty soon.
Pretty soon, yeah.
Yeah.
And I'll say this,
they traded Wilson Ramos.
Underrated winners are ALE's pitchers.
Baltimore is terrible now.
I mean, they've been terrible,
but they have no Machado,
No scope is ridiculous.
Wilson Ramos has been, well, Bowers has been really good,
but Wilson Ramos has been great for Tampa Bay.
He's gone.
So a little bit helpful.
I mean, getting Tommy Fam could be very good, but he hasn't really shown it yet.
Oh, he hasn't shown it recently in the last few months.
And another winner, Jose LeClerc, right?
Jake Deekman traded to Arizona.
Brad Ziegler also going to Arizona, but Dekeman, a bigger news item there.
LeClerc, you figure he's the Rangers closer now?
I can't imagine who else it'd be.
Okay.
And before the Dekeman trade,
John Daniels seemed to indicate that LeClerc was the favorite anyway.
So, yeah, I think it's going to be LeClerc.
I'd pick up Yates over him,
but LeClerc is pretty exciting in his own right.
Seattle acquired Cameron Maven.
What's up with that?
They just kind of probably felt a little left out.
They hadn't made a trade in like 24 hours.
You know the Mariners.
Yeah, they were.
They were quiet, considering they're playing for something.
That is not like Jerry DePoto at all.
So, Mabin, is he a regular player for them?
No.
No, he's just legs off the bench.
All righty.
And Wilson Ramos going to Philadelphia, you've got to like that park shift for him.
He's still on the DL.
He should be back in mid to late August.
And Cleveland acquired Leonis Martín, which I'm guessing is not all that fantasy relevant.
No.
Okay.
Did I miss anything?
Did you miss anything?
Let me think here.
No.
From yesterday.
From yesterday, that seems like...
Yeah.
Okay, good.
Seems like the big stuff.
So Kirby Yates, Chris Archer, Kevin Gosman, their winners for Scott.
Brian Dozier might be a loser.
We'll see about the playing time.
And same with Travis Shaw.
Jose LeClerc is also a winner here.
and some crappy raise outfielders that you probably don't need anyway are losers
because Tommy Fam and Austin Meadows are going to be replacing them.
And here's a tweet of the day.
Oh, the minor leaguers, the minor leaguers before the tweet.
So prospects that were exchanged here, anyone really interesting?
No.
Really?
Nobody that interesting.
Oh, okay, good.
I mean, we can't consider the Pirates duo aren't far.
removed from being prospects, Meadows and Glassnow, but they don't qualify for that anymore.
Otherwise, it was like the guys that Braves gave up for Gosman, I was floored that they didn't
give up anybody that notable.
Yeah, well, you know, why?
A couple are like top 30 prospects for them, but not, you know, not anybody who really
needs to be on the fantasy radar.
Yeah, that's because he's Kevin Gosman, you know.
All right, so here's our tweet of the day.
Dominic, who has the best lineup in baseball now?
Sox, Dodgers, Brewers.
I'd still take the Red Sox since the top three in their order are top 10 in points,
but a friend of mine says, the Dodgers, thoughts?
No, I'd go with the Red Sox.
The Dodgers are in the discussion.
That's fair.
But I'd go with the Red Sox.
I mean, just their outfield.
Well, that's basically, that's not exactly it.
Bogart's having a great.
ear.
Yeah.
The bottom of their order is not great.
You know, Jackie Bradley, whoever they're starting a catcher.
Kinsler's an upgrade.
He's an upgrade.
That's a nice...
Endeavors is on the D.L.
Now, which doesn't help.
Yeah.
I mean, the Dodgers is deeper.
The Yankees have the deepest lineup.
The proof is in the run scored, right?
Sure, yeah.
Red Sox, I believe, are won there.
When everybody's healthy on the Yankees, they have the deepest lineup.
Like, they'll bat like Andue.
part eighth, but they're not healthy right now.
So I think I've got to go with the Red Sox.
Best lineup in their outfield, unbelievable.
The big news, so there was other stuff that happened in baseball yesterday.
Chris Sayle is on the DL with shoulder inflammation.
They're hoping he will miss only one start.
What do you think?
It's a little concerning, but if they're hopeful he's only going to miss one start,
I'm going to trust that's what happens and try my best not to freak out.
Sure. U. Darvish threw a successful bullpen session, and he felt no pain.
Do you think, Chris, U. Darvis pitches in August?
Yeah. You're going to give me the whole month?
It would probably be toward the end of the month, but I'll say yes.
Carlos Correa could begin a rehab assignment tomorrow.
Sean Doolittle had an MRI in his foot that showed no change in his foot.
Mentioned Erudus Viscayano still a long ways away from throwing, and Minter is 52% own.
Carlos Martinez is on the DL, but the Cardinals don't think it's a season-ending injury.
But when they say that, that means he's going to be out for a little while.
So Carlos Martinez is going to have kind of a bust of a season just based on playing time.
Oh, speaking of the Cardinals, I forgot to mention one winner.
Oh, yeah.
Because who's replacing Tommy Fam?
Well, right now it's a combo of Harrison Bader and Tyler O'Neill.
But I think
I think if things play out
Tyler O'Neill will get
a bigger and bigger share of the playing time
especially since Dexter Fowler doesn't have much going on and right.
I mean, there's no reason why they can't play both.
And Tyler O'Neill at AAA this year,
you project those numbers over 160 games.
It comes out to like 70 homers.
He's a real masher.
And now is at least a semi-regular in the majors.
So we had already,
picked him up over the weekend in the Four of the People League, the 16-team categories
league at them.
I don't know that it needs to be owned in 12-team three outfielder leagues, but in five outfielder
leagues are leagues with a lot of teams.
Tyler O'Neill, definitely somebody to add.
Let me tell you something about that league, about the Four of the People podcast league,
16 teams head-to-head categories.
Scott White is, it did not start Dallas Keikle this week.
Like, you start Colin McHugh over Dallas Keikle.
I thought that was our plan.
I thought we talked about that.
Well, we started some starters.
Yeah.
But not Keikl.
We are facing the best team in the league, and his pitching staff is stacked.
So I was saying, forget wins and strikeouts.
We're going to try win, ERA, and Whip.
Danny Duffy over Dallas Keikle, a two-star Duffy.
Hey, it might pay off.
Might pay off.
So, yeah, I don't.
really like this format anymore.
It just feels like doctoring the system.
How do we win categories rather than how do we roster the best fantasy baseball players?
It's kind of a...
Oh, we sat, Dallas Keikles Zach Godley and Alex Wood this week.
That is hilarious.
Obviously, I wish we started Godley over Duffy, but...
That's okay.
I don't blame you.
No, it's just this format is kind of frustrating to me, but we figured it out.
You know, we figure out, like, forget starting pitching.
We're going to, like, try to get, we made that trade for Mike Trout, gave up Corey Klobber and something else.
I mean, Mike Trout is our offense.
We went nine and one last one last one.
I know.
I don't think we're going to beat the best team of the league this week, but we are climbing in the standings.
We are going to finish over 500.
Yeah, let's do it.
We all in my shot.
It took a little too long for us to figure out that strategy.
Ken Giles expected to join the Blue Jays tomorrow.
Justin Turner expected back this weekend, as Scott mentioned,
earlier and George Springer is day to day with shoulder soreness. I made an ad drop yesterday.
I'm wondering if I'm going to regret it. It's a roto league. And I dropped Kyle Tucker for Eloy Jimenez.
And I'm hoping Jimenez is up soon. Tucker, he's been really bad. I know there's a history of
great Astros prospects starting out really bad and being amazing down the stretch. But I think
what I was really regretting was, oh, Springer just got hurt. Now Tucker's going to play.
Because Tucker was on the bench yesterday. He came in for Springer. Who would you rather have,
Eloy or Tucker? And it's again, Springer's day-to-day.
I'd rather have...
I'd rather have Tucker.
I mean, it's not like he's striking out a lot.
His Babbup is really low.
It seems like...
It seems like there's bad luck to this start.
Kind of like, you know, we've cited the Bregman example before.
Yeah, it seemed like the underlying numbers suggested he shouldn't be doing so poorly when he first got called up.
I don't know how many people even remember that.
Brickman's so good now, but it was a thing that happened.
But if it's for a bench, but, like, I think, I'm pretty confident Jimenez is going to be up soon, and he's, there's a good chance he's even better than Tucker.
Yeah, and Tucker, I mean, I feel like he sits a lot. He started one of the last six games for them.
That is a lot. I didn't notice that.
Yeah, two of the last eight.
I do suspect if he gets going, that would change.
Yeah, yeah.
Maybe this could be a little break for him, get him back in the lineup.
I'm going to regret dropping him, aren't I?
So, anyway, I was at the dinner last night.
The dinner?
Big night for us, first night out with the kid, first time in, like, a public place.
We sat outside, don't worry, but two weeks old today, so that was fun.
But we went out to dinner, and somebody asked us, you know,
Do we go to the same restaurant?
Like, do we go to this restaurant a lot?
I said, yeah, you know, we kind of fall in the habit.
We go to the same restaurant all the time.
I said, but we like to cook.
And the person said, oh, do you use one of those services?
Like, you're damn right, we do.
We use Blue Apron, and we love Blue Apron.

All right, Tuesday standout.
Scott, I'm going to go with Daniel Murphy.
Daniel Murphy went three for four with two home runs.
They scored 25 runs.
It was insane.
I turned on the game and it was 19 to nothing.
And Stephen Mats was long gone.
But it's now 16 good games in a row, batting over four.
hundred for Daniel Murphy, a very high Babbat, and only three home runs in those 16 games, two of them
yesterday.
He has one...
And neither was off Jose Reyes, so that's...
That's very good.
Because Reyes gave up like five runs in an inning he pitched, understandably.
I didn't actually see who he homered off Daniel Murphy, but I know coming into the game,
he had one extra base hit in 25 at Bats against lefties, but I'm assuming he homered off
Stephen Matt's.
He did not.
Oh, he didn't.
He homered off the same reliever twice.
It was a reliever whose name I didn't recognize.
Well, it doesn't matter.
What do you think about Daniel Murphy right now?
Because it was looking pretty grim for a while.
Yeah, but the strikeouts have been as low as you'd expect.
The line drive rate is Uber high, actually.
Yeah, I don't...
I was a little concerned, obviously, because coming back from a knee injury,
you just don't know how that's going to affect a guy,
especially one on the wrong side at 30.
But I'm also not terribly surprised he seems to be picking it up now.
But do you think Daniel Murphy's going to be vintage Daniel Murphy rest of season?
I don't see how.
I think he will be eventually.
And this is the strongest indication we've seen so far.
So maybe it'll happen from today forward.
Maybe.
It's possible.
Who do you think is more reliable going forward?
Elvis Andrews or Daniel Murphy?
I mean, I got to go with Elvis Andrews.
It's safer.
Okay.
But Murphy's more impactful if he's Daniel Murphy.
I'm going to give you one more standout.
Jeremy Jeffress.
Got to save.
Corey Canable only threw like 16 pitches the day before.
Yep.
What do you think?
But he's allowed seven earned runs in his last 10 appearances.
Canabel has.
So you brought it up yesterday.
I thought it was a good point.
He might be on thin ice here.
Yeah, Jeffers is widely available.
I think he's like 25% owned.
So a really amazing year for him and a good team.
Could be good.
You got to stand out for me?
Let's talk about Godley.
So I'm very excited about Zach Godley.
There had been signs that he was
getting right again.
And the biggest was yesterday.
Seven, two hit innings with one walk, ten strikeouts.
But really, for about two months now,
his breaking ball has been as good as it was last year again.
And the walks have been down recently here.
So it's an 11 appearance stretch.
10 of them starts.
It's a 372 ERA now.
But only two home runs.
the strikeout 68 and 58 innings.
That's a really high rate.
And swinging strike rate's been elite.
I think he's coming around.
I think you're going to be happy you held on to him.
Zach Godley, only started in 62% of leagues yesterday.
He struck out 10 Rangers and seven scoreless innings with 19 swinging strikes, blah, blah, blah.
And you mentioned the control?
Yep.
I did mention the control.
Four of his last five starts.
Just one walk.
Yep. That's huge.
Now, the one that wasn't was four walks, but still, it's trending the right way.
Looks like he's lined up for two starts next week, Philadelphia and at Cincinnati.
I just want to get these deep league guys out of the way and tell me if you're interested in them.
Wade Miley, Homer Bailey, David Freeze, and Jeff McNeil met second basement who is batting 250 with one home run.
Four walks, four strikeouts so far.
Wade Miley, Homer Bailey, David Freeze, and Jeff McNeil.
Jeff McDeal's kind of exciting
He has four walks, I think to four strikeouts
Has been playing second base every day for the Mets
Yep, I want to say
And just had a huge minor league season
So definitely somebody to keep an eye on there
Um
The Homer Bailey
Who's man, only 4% owed
I was excited when I saw the end result for Homer Bailey
Because remember
He had kind of a retro
Homer Bailey start last time out with a bunch of strikeouts.
Only 10 swinging strikes across eight innings against the Tigers.
So even though the end result was good, I'm not sure.
It was the 18 swinging strikes for Bailey last time.
I'm just, I thought I'd be putting in claims for him until I looked a little deeper,
and I'm not sure.
I'm still a little hesitant to pick him up.
I think you should be.
I think you should be.
I mean, two really good starts in a run.
All right, but look at Jordan Zimmerman had like 10 really good starts.
in a row or whatever, you know?
I mean, Homer Bailey has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball for a few years now.
How could you get excited about him after two starts?
Well, there have been so many injuries.
He hasn't had a healthy season during that time.
And the stuff is still good.
I mean, he's still throwing as hard as ever.
So I guess if you want to, you know, he's 4% owned.
It's interesting to help in deeper leagues.
If he has more than, if he has another quality start,
with about a strike out per inning
and say more than a dozen
swinging strikes next time out
a dozen. A three start stretch like that.
Swingy strike. That's a lot.
Yeah. Well, he should be somebody who does that
if he's good.
If he's as good as I'm hoping he is,
if he does that next time, he has like a three-star stretch like that.
I think it's time to talk about picking him up in mixed leagues,
but not yet. Okay.
So that's Homer Bailey.
He's got the nationals,
weekend.
All right, let's rank some pitchers, Scott.
This category is called Rankum.
Part one.
Rank them.
Jake Areetta.
Don't know how he did what he did yesterday.
You know, the Red Sox are in a bit of an offensive funk.
They haven't hit all that well in the past like five games.
But hats off to Areietta, seven innings, one run, seven strikeouts at Boston.
Tyler Skaggs, ugh.
Ten runs in three and a third.
He had allowed a total of eight runs over his previous eight starts.
John Lester, he's been struggling lately.
He's in the five starts before yesterday's dud.
He had a 693 ERA and no quality starts.
He does get San Diego this weekend.
And Masahiro Tanaka has been better lately, but he will be at Boston this weekend.
Rankum, Jake Arieta, Tyler Skaggs, John Lester, Masahiro Tanaka.
I will go.
I'm still going to go Skaggs 1.
Going to chalk this one up is just a blip.
he had been so reliable and in ways that indicate he was genuinely a high-end pitcher,
like good swinging strike rate, not a lot of walks, et cetera.
So I'm going to still go home number one.
Tanaka, two, just because we know how unreliable he is, and then Arenda 3, Lester, 4.
Arieta ahead of Lester, huh?
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, he's just been more reliable.
and if nothing else, he gets a lot of ground balls.
He did it yesterday, which is another reason to wonder why it happened.
He actually gave a ton of fly balls to the Red Sox, but it didn't hurt him.
Yeah.
They actually, see, they have very similar ERAs.
332 for Arenda, 322 for Lester, 38 walks, 49 walks, 87Ks, 99Ks, similar inningspe.
They're having pretty similar seasons.
I don't know Lester's whip, but Arieta's is 1.24, which is not very good.
So Scott's going Skaggs 1, Tanaka, 2, Arietta 3, Lester, 4.
All right, Scott, rank them, part 2.
Zach Godley, John Gray, Jack Flaherty, Walker Bueller.
Zach Godley, John Gray, Jack Flaherty, Walker, Bueller.
I'll talk about Gray in a second.
You go ahead and rank them.
Man, that's tough.
I'll go Flaherty.
What?
Yeah.
Flaherty, Gray, Godley, Bueller.
Do you worry that Flaherty Gray, Godley, do you worry that Flaherty's wearing down a little bit maybe?
He's five straight starts of five and a third or fewer for him.
Yeah.
I don't know that that's the issue.
I think it's more, they haven't been great starts, so you wouldn't expect him to pitch, to keep pitching.
But it's fluky, it seems like to me, because the strikeouts have been.
great. He's not a fly ball pitcher, and yet he's given up a surprising number of home runs.
I think he's kind of had bad home run luck. But I never have any fear of starting him.
I feel like even his bad starts aren't terrible, and I think there's the upside for him
to have great starts. But you know what? If you want to put Gray and Godly ahead of him,
it's a really close group. Okay, so you went Flaherty, Gray, Godly, Bueller.
I did mention...
Yeah, I think Bueller's definitely going to be last for me just because it's unclear
how long he's going to have a starting spot.
Yep, that's why I said maybe he's a sell-high candidate, and this was a great start against
the Brewers.
I'm very excited about his future, but his present, they have so many pitchers and striplings
on the DL, but he'll be back soon.
He's got a foot injury.
Riu is making his way back.
You know how it is with the Dodgers.
They've got so many guys.
Also, the next two starts for Bueller are huge.
Houston at home, which might not be that bad.
They won't have Al Tuvei.
I don't know about Springer.
And at Colorado next week, I don't think we're going to start him there.
So if Flaherty's number one there, is he ahead of Skaggs or Tanaka from the previous group?
No.
No?
Is he ahead of Lester and Areietta?
Yes.
Okay.
I, you know, maybe you can tell I'm hungry today, Scott, because all I want to do is give away some free food.
I wouldn't exactly call this free.
I would call it heavily discounted for a limited time, 80% off an unbelievable amount of food that is completely delicious from Omaha Steaks.
What I want you to do is go to Omaha Steaks.com and in the search bar you type in FBT.
So it's not a URL, it's not an offer code at the end.
It's in the search bar on Omaha Steaks.com type in FBT.
I have gotten this package of meat twice.
It is so good.
and I was expecting to do a big barbecue.
I'm going to tell you in a second how much food you get.
I was expecting to do a big barbecue but did not get the chance to do it.
I still could.
So I said, you know what, screw it.
Let's just cook the burgers and hot dogs ourselves.
It's like my favorite hot dog ever.
Unbelievable.
And you know what you're getting from Omaha Steaks.
Forget about the hot dogs.
You're getting two tender filet mignons, two beefy top sirloins,
four juicy boneless pork chops, four chicken breasts, four steak burgers,
four kilbasa sausages, four award-winning gourmet jumbo Franks, a seasoning packet, and four made from scratch, caramel apple tartlets getting thrown in for free.
How much is all of that food that could feed like three families?
$39.99.
A limited time offer, 80% off.
Go to Omaha Steaks.com.
Type in FBT in the search bar.
It's summertime, man.
Go out there and grill it out with amazing cuts of beef, bison.
seafood if you want it.
Omaha steaks.com.
Type FBT in the search bar,
3999, 80% off.
Make it happen.
It's so good.
All right.
Mouth is watering.
And as I told you really,
I had a Danish this morning.
I haven't had a Danish in like a decade.
Yeah, you made me want a Danish.
It was really good.
Thanks for not sharing.
Blueberry.
Blueberry filling.
News and notes.
Every pitcher in New York has hand foot and mouth disease.
Jay Hapenow has it.
He may not miss a start, but that's true.
Three baseball people.
Really?
Counting me.
That hand-put-mouth disease just since the All-Star Break.
Yeah, I had it right after the All-Star Break.
No kidding.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
I didn't even know I could get it.
My kids both had it.
But I didn't think I could get it.
Was it really bad?
It was bad for the first 36 hours.
I was in bed, not wanting to move.
but then once and it wasn't i wasn't even i didn't even realize that's what i had it was only after
that once i felt better that you get the spots on your hand and feet fortunately not on my mouth
but yeah there it was uh the ones on the bottom of the feet were worse because they're soars
like they're not they weren't really itchy they were just sore and so you're stepping on them
every step you take and that could get kind of painful but it wasn't a big deal it's fine all right
that's very weird jake lamb could be out for the season he has
as a frayed rotator cuff.
Lordus Gurriel, how about this timeline?
He's out two to six weeks with knee and ankle injuries.
Quite a difference there.
Trey Turner stole two more bases.
Adam Eaton continues to sit against lefties.
He had started 11 of the 12 previous games,
and he had been leading off and doing fine,
but boy, I know Adam Eaton's not a power hitter,
but here's what he's done in July.
311, 420 on base.
Right away, that's great.
3.92 slugging.
We need a little extra base pot.
Adam Eaton, a little bit.
Ronald O'Cuna's heating up.
I plan on talking about him probably tomorrow.
David Fletcher will be the Angels' regular second baseman.
Jimmy, he's played shortstop yesterday, Simmons sat.
Jimmy Nelson threw a bullpen session.
Is Jimmy Nelson worth stashing, Scott?
I'm not going to say no.
I mean, it depends who else you have.
He's probably among the top 30 DL stashes to stash.
It'll be so late when it gets back, but he was really good last year.
Okay, that's Jimmy Nelson.
Eric Lauer on the D.O.
They forearm strain.
All right, are these players underowned?
I've got ranging from 75% to 33%.
Tell me if they're underowned.
Kyle Gibson, another quality start yesterday against the Indians.
He will be at Cleveland and at Detroit next week,
and Kyle Gibson is 75% owned.
Oh, radically under-owned.
Oh, yeah?
He should be like 95% owned.
This one was a quality start.
It was one of his worst starts recently.
Six of his previous nine, he had gone seven innings or more.
And he's more than a strikeout per inning.
He's really good.
He's having a breakout season.
And I think just his win-loss record has kind of covered it up.
Kyle Gibson, 75% owned, pick him up in more leagues.
Derek Rodriguez, 66% owned.
Yeah, he should be more on than that.
He's not a big bad misser, and that's always concerning to me.
but he has had one bad start his whole time up, I think.
Six plus innings with two run runs or fewer in each of his past six starts.
And obviously a great home venue.
He needs to be more on the 66%.
Yeah, next week he's got Houston and Pittsburgh at home.
That'd be a little bit of a tough call, I'd say.
But I'm leaning towards starting, Derek Rodriguez.
I think I would.
How about Jake Bowers 60% owned?
He homered yesterday.
Is a 60% Jake Bowers underowned?
Yes.
He's had...
I mean, the batting average isn't great,
but it feels like it should be better
with the kind of...
The quality of contact he makes, a lot of line drives.
And now he gets some help from Tommy Fam, hopefully.
All right, Jake Bowers.
Yep.
Jake Bowers or Greg Bird?
I would rather have Jake Bowers.
Me too.
I do want to throw this out for Derek Rodriguez.
I was trying to state what he did well, what he does well.
He's a pretty good control pitcher.
But he's kind of had good home run luck to this point.
Part of that's the park he pitches in.
He'll always have pretty good home run luck.
But there may be some regression coming there.
I still think he's worth owning.
Jake Bowers or Will Myers?
I will go
I'll go Myers
either format
I was definitely in
Roto but I think it points also
I'd stick with Myers
Cole Calhoun is 55% owned
he went three for four with a home run
three RBIs in a walk
he has changed his batting stance
and it has changed his career
I have a hard time
I have a hard time buying that
because he just you know he hasn't really had
a very fantasy relevant career
but maybe there you know look it happens
it happens happened for Jose Batista
J.D. Martinez.
Well, wait a second.
Daniel Murphy?
He hasn't had a fantasy relevant career.
He had a three-year stretch from 2014 to 2016
where he's pretty much owned everywhere.
I mean, he wasn't all-star-level player.
He was pretty replaceable.
He's pretty replaceable.
Cole Calhoun has never slugged higher
than 462 in his career in a season.
He doesn't steal bases.
He probably should not have been owned everywhere,
but he was for whatever reason.
Yeah, I mean, he put up points.
And remember, 2014, 2015,
the offensive environment was a little different in baseball then.
Yeah, a little, but still, I mean, this is,
I always felt he was overrated in the fantasy community.
And then he became completely not rated.
Yeah.
And now he's back.
He's 55% own, Cole Calhoun.
Is that too low?
Yeah, it's too low, given how hot he is right now.
I don't know that it needs to be 80%.
But he's on fire the last two months.
Well, a month and a half, really, since he came back for the DL, 10, 18 OPS and 35 games.
So definitely somebody you want your lineup right now.
Jake Bowers is also outfield eligible.
Would you rather have Calhoun or Bowers?
I'd rather have Bowers.
Okay.
Calhoun or Gregory Polanco?
Polanco
Yeah
May
I want to say it
I don't want to
You know
I don't want to jump to conclusions
Don't want to say it too soon
But the breakout may be
Yeah
Maybe
Maybe
Maybe happening
He was the player
He was the player I loved in 2017
So it only took a year and a half
So everybody
You better watch out for Greg Bird
After the All Star break next year
That's all I got to say
How about Johann
Camargo, 33% owned.
The plate discipline has actually gotten worse.
It has.
We're seeing some power, though, for Camargo.
He's 33% owned.
Is he under-owned?
And we're seeing some bad bit correction.
He's definitely under-owned.
It's such a low number.
I'd rather have him than Danesby Swanson,
and he's eligible in shortstop and their base.
Does he need to be more than, like, 65, 70% owned?
Probably not.
But he's a pretty good middle-in-frew.
field option, maybe third base option if you play in a deep league.
Would you rather have Camargo or Justin Turner?
I would rather have Justin Turner.
I mean, it seems like an obvious answer, but he hasn't.
He's been bad, Justin Turner.
Yeah, and obviously he's on the DL now, but.
Right.
No, it's easily Justin Turner.
Standard head-to-head line of there's no reason to pick up Johann Camargo.
Okay.
He's under him because it's, what, 33%.
Yeah.
But he shouldn't be anywhere close to universally out.
Fringy starting pitchers, Tanna Roark.
You liked him as a two-star pitcher, and he had a great start against the Mets,
and he's off to a great start this week.
Stephen Matt's quite the opposite, seven runs and two-thirds of an inning.
In his previous 15 starts, he had a 340-80RA.
Matt Boyd, Matt Boyd, with a really good start against Cincinnati,
and Trevor Cahill is 39.
percent owned, and he had a good start against the Blue Jays.
So three good starts, Roark, Boyd, and Cahill.
One bad start, Matt.
I'm assuming Roark is the head of the class here, and he's the most owned by far.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Yep, he's the top dog.
Second is Cahill.
Matt's and Boyd, really no interest.
And Bullpen.
So Vasca's got to save for Pittsburgh.
Sarantho Domingo's got to save for Philly.
Jeremy Jeffers got a save, as we mentioned, and Hector Rondone got a save.
And that, you know, who knows, maybe that's his last save.
Again, Ozuna is going to be back this weekend.
He's eligible to come back on Sunday.
That's Dominguez update.
That's three of the Phillies past four saves have gone to him.
And the one that didn't was Pat Nysheck.
It wasn't Victor Orano.
So hopefully Dominguez is back in the driver's seat there.
All right, let's read some emails to finish the show.
We see, we maybe get a lot in here.
I knew that today would be sort of an unusual show with all the trade deadline stuff, but I hope it's been helpful for you.
Here's Jason in Windsor, Ontario, or his name is Jason Windsor, and he's from Ontario.
I think it's the first, though.
Hey, awesome, super, charming, and heroic.
I don't know if that's...
Oh, Adam Scott, Chris Heath.
Awesome, super charming, heroic.
All right.
First letter, yeah.
All right.
I don't know that...
Heath is heroic.
But it's fine.
It begins with H.
I'm a head-to-head 12-team league looking for RBI's and home runs on my waiver wire.
Any recommendation?
And what is the value of Tyler White rest of season?
I mean, that's the pick a random player off the waiver wire, like, who's available?
That's always the first question.
Well, if he's asking about Tyler White, I'm guessing that we're looking a little deeper.
not to like a Jake Bowers.
I like Tyler White.
I hope he gets a chance to play more than we have reason to believe we will right now.
He's started, I think, three straight games because Altuvay's on the DL and Guerriel's been playing some second base.
Huge season at AAA this year, Tyler White.
He walks a lot.
He's got the power of a corner infielder.
But he's 27 and hasn't.
has had a hard time squeezing his way into the Astros lineup.
So, yeah, 333 with a 444 OBP and a 1013 OPS at AAA Fresno this year.
Definitely keeping an eye on him, but he's not 12-team mixed league material yet.
Yeah, Nick Williams, like, we're going to go a little deeper here.
Okay, Cole Calhoun, obviously, pick him up if you want.
Stephen Piscotti's been hot.
Michael Conforto has been really good.
But Nick Williams is 30% owned.
Eloy Jimenez is now 56% owned.
Tyler O'Neill, 20% owned.
Tyler, yeah, oh, you just said him.
Tyler O'Neill.
He needs to play every day, but he could make up a lot of ground and home runs in a short amount of time.
Randall Gritchick, 24% owned.
Might want to give him a try, too.
Okay, an email from Doug in Atlanta.
Follow-up, Dear Rogers, Stark and Banner, comic book stuff.
Last week I emailed the show with an Aaron-Judge Dilemma.
Since none of you were super thrilled with the offers I receive,
I decided to duct tape together some offense until judges return.
I gave up Kyle Hendrix for Edwin Incarnation in a 16-team dynasty categories league.
Grade the trade.
16-team dynasty Categories League, give up Hendrix, get Encarnacion.
It's like a B-minus.
It's a good deal.
Good job.
This is from Jesse.
Rest of season, Eric Thames or Jake Bowers.
Bowers, playing time is going to be much more consistent.
Brent in Michigan wants the fantasy regulators.
I'm not going to cue up the music because I don't have the iPad out.
Fourth year of a 10-te-to-head points Dynasty League.
There's a 1 in 15 team in last place.
He hasn't made a single lineup of a roster move since the first week of the year.
Why are you in the league, dude?
Yesterday, three days before the trade deadline,
he decides to start making trades with the team in second place.
he gave Chris Davis, Keras Davis, to get Chu and Aguilar.
He also gave up Mustakus and Story to get Glaber Torres, Luke Weaver, and Tyler Anderson.
The trades were both initially vetoed by the league, but after some complaining by both teams, making the trade, the commission allowed them through.
While dynasty trades should be allowed between good and bad teams, the last place owner has shown zero interest in playing until now,
and I don't believe he's actually acting in the best interest of his team.
He likely would have been removed from the league at the end of the year anyway.
the trades don't seem awful, but the situation as a whole is just very sketchy.
Is there a solution?
And it is important to note, Scott.
The trades aren't awful.
He gave up Chris Davis for Chew and Aguilar.
In fact, I think he won that trade, the Jew Aguilar, getting Chew and Aguilar back for Chris Davis?
Come on.
And he did.
He won the other trade, too.
It's a Dynasty League.
He gave up Mustakas and Story for Glaver Torres, Luke Weaver and Tyler Anderson.
Maybe he won.
Yeah.
The dynasty aspect makes Glabor Torres more valuable than it would be in a standard.
League. But, you know, Trevor Storr is pretty valuable in his own rate.
The trades are fine, but the question is, this guy hasn't made a move since week one.
Now he's making trades with the second place team. What do you do?
I think, like, if he's showing interest all of a sudden, I don't think that's a bad thing.
You'd rather people be interested than not.
And I think you talk with him in the offseason and get a sense of just how interested he really is.
And if he's not, then, you know, kind of nudge him out.
door. But, you know, if he's taking an interest all of a sudden, I don't think that's
necessarily a bad thing. And since the trades aren't, the trades themselves aren't fishy.
Like, you're just worried. The only reason you're worrying is because he hasn't shown interest
until now. But it's not like these are trades that are really going to, you know, hand this guy
the title or anything. Yeah, I agree with you. Okay, next up, we have an email from No
name. He says, Dear Bridges, Banks, and Wainer. I don't know what that is.
If Joey Votto only ends up with 18 home runs, where should Votto get taken next year in both formats?
Points League, probably around the second round, round two, round three turn.
Roto League, he might drop to round four.
He is the number five. Joey Votto is the number five first baseman of points.
in Roto, he's probably like 15.
I'm just kind of eyeballing it right now.
I don't want to count on the air.
It's probably really annoying when I do that.
But he's worse than Matt Olson and Joey Gallo in Roto.
So yeah, big difference.
Now, that's Roto with average.
Roto with OVP, you bump him up around.
Let's see if we can get a few more emails here from the inbox.
This is from Charlie.
I've been starting Kyle Tucker ever since his call-up.
Jonathan's scope is on the waiver wire.
Did I drop Kyle Tucker for scope?
Yeah.
Yeah.
You should do that.
I would do that.
Grade the trade in an A.L-only roto league.
Give up Morales, Torres, and Gibson.
Morales, Torres, and Gibson.
It's pretty good.
Get Bird, Altovae, and Paxton.
So Morales to Bird, Torres to Al-Tube, Gibson to Paxton.
I mean, you're upgrading.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's a great deal.
That's an easy goal.
Yeah, he's a little nervous about the Altovae injury, and I get that, but you probably have to, yeah, have to take that chance.
And finally, from JT, from John, John and Georgia, 14 team head-to-head points league.
Rank these guys rest of season.
Travis Shaw, Miguel Sino, Reese Hoskins, Matt Olson, Justin Smoke.
Shaw Sanoe, Hoskins, Olson, Smoke.
Hoskins is a distant one
I definitely would have put Shaw second
before these playing time concerns popped up
What format is it, does he say?
Points.
Hoskins won.
I think I still go Shaw second in points.
Then we got Smoke, Olson, and Sineau.
That's probably how I'd recommend them.
I might go smoke ahead of Olson in points also.
Yeah, Smoke Olson, Sineau.
And then Snow is definitely.
definitely last. All right. Thanks for listening, everybody. Thanks for your emails. And we are going
