Starting point is 00:00:00 Now here's Frank Scott and Chris. The market is alive and it is moving. Welcome into an emergency edition of Fantasy Baseball today on Friday, January 16th. I am Frank Stamphill joined by Scott White, long time, no see. About 14 hours after Kyle Tucker goes to the Dodgers, the Mets pivot and sign Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal that includes opt-outs after the first and second season's no deferrals. very similar deal to what Alex Breggman just signed last offseason. And it's so interesting to me that these frankly stud players are settling for these short-term contracts.
Starting point is 00:00:39 It has worked out well for, you know, Breggman this offseason and Matt Chapman and Blake Snell in the past. Maybe this looming lockout has influenced the market, but it still seems kind of weird to me that, you know, players like Tucker and Bobeshet are signing these short-term deals. But in the long run, it still could work out for them. Let's get into the fit here, Scott. It's $42 million a year, Frank. It is a lot of money. I think this off season has gone off the rails when Bo Bichette is now making $42 million a year.
Starting point is 00:01:09 I like Bo Bichette, but that is an all-time kind of annual salary. And it's a unnatural fit for the Mets, too, in a few different ways. Yeah, and we'll talk about exactly that. First up defensively, Bob Bichette is going to primarily play third base. for the New York Mets here, a position he has never played before. The metrics with him at shortstop have not been kind, so he has been declining there. I think the expectation all along is that wherever he signed,
Starting point is 00:01:39 he probably was going to move off shortstop anyway. So again, expectation is a third base here with the Mets. Scott, offensively, I'll pull up a graphic here for those watching on YouTube that will have Bobeshets spray chart over City Field. But what do you think about this fit with the Mets and in that lineup? Well, first of all, so long to Brett Beatty, my sweet prince. I mean, it's still there. I like him as a sleeper too.
Starting point is 00:02:07 He could still, he may not be there for long. A. B, he's dabbled in the outfield before, and that's what the Mets biggest need actually is. So maybe they could try him there. C, D.H. One of D.H in first base is still vacant, even with Jorge Polanco there. But Mark Viantos is also there. So now we're kind of, unless Beatty moves the out, feel full time, it's Vento's and
Starting point is 00:02:34 Beatty splitting time again, which, you know, I like Beatty as a sleeper. I know you got the Boba Bette graphic pulled up and I immediately started talking about Brett Bady. So sorry about that. I like Brett Bady as a sleeper. Let me see if I can pull up the number real quick. I'll talk about Bob Bichette while I'm pulling that up. So Bichette.
Starting point is 00:02:56 third base does he really have the arm for it that's a that's a real question uh is this venue going to be kind to beshette it's especially deep and right center and he kind of lives there he's he hits the ball to the opposite field more often than he pulls it uh now if you look at the home run specifically and you see them on the graphic they tend to be pulled the home runs specifically tend to be pulled, but the pull air rate overall is low. Statcast says if he played every game at City Field last year, it would have been 15 home runs instead of the 19 he hit. So it is a park downgrade for him, for Bichette in particular,
Starting point is 00:03:40 park upgrade for somebody like Marcus Simeon who pulls the ball a ton. But for Bichet, it's a downgrade. If he continues the pattern of mostly pulling, of the batted balls that are home run distance, of those mostly being pulled, then that deep right center could actually work to his benefit because all the all the balls he's hitting there that aren't home run distance are going to be harder to flag down for outfielders.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Maybe we see more doubles and triples. Maybe we see batting average go up. You know, I think if you're setting the over-under for a healthy bobbocet at 20 home runs, I'm taking the under now that he's at City Field, but probably an even better bet for batting average now. Maybe he doesn't lose that much value, picks up third base eligibility, which at least for 2026 would be more useful for short stuff.
Starting point is 00:04:38 He'd still have shortstop, of course, for that one year. And, you know, great lineup spot, presumably, batting behind Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, a couple of, you know, a couple of, a couple of star players hitting ahead of him could help him to rack up RBI. I think it's a pretty good fit for Boba Chet the more I talk about it.
Starting point is 00:05:05 But it is going to change, it is going to kind of change things for him in terms of what a, what his base stat line looks like. Yeah, he reminded us last year, Boba Chet, that he is still a stud hitter following an injury plagued uh, 2024.
Starting point is 00:05:22 But last season hit 311, 18 homers, 94 RBI, and 840 OPS and 139 games. Just a 15% strikeout rate. So he still makes a lot of contact. 91 mile per hour, average exit velocity,
Starting point is 00:05:34 hits the ball hard. It's a lot of line drives. It's still too many ground balls for him to kind of tap into as much power as we want for fantasy. Doesn't really run much anymore either. So we were joking beforehand, Scott.
Starting point is 00:05:45 I mean, we could see kind of a wacky stat line from Boba Shett. Like, he hits 300, but with 15 to 18 homers and like 120 RBI, right? We just, we don't really see, you know, stat lines like
Starting point is 00:06:00 that, and maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but hitting behind Soto and Linder I mean, that is a prime spot. We just saw how many RBI Pete Alonzo put up last season. And when you make that much contact with that many players on base ahead of you, you're just going to run into a bunch of RBI. So I do think that
Starting point is 00:06:16 part of Bobachet's game looks really good. Maybe the power comes down a little bit, you know, 15 to 20 home runs, as you mentioned there, with the New York Mets. I think the fact that he's going to gain third base eligibility, Scott, helps us a lot for fantasy because, you know, third base, not really the best position. It kind of falls off too. So gaining another third baseman, I think we all welcome that for fantasy. That is probably if you're talking, you're leaving the real world baseball context out of it, just nuts and bolts. How does this affect the fantasy game? Getting another viable option.
Starting point is 00:06:50 at third base is a net win, even if maybe Bob Bouchette's production reduces slightly. And even then, I don't think the reduction in production is a given, just kind of the shape of it changing. However, getting back to Beatty, you know, we are gaining another viable starter at third base, but we may be losing a sleeper. He's going to get some at bats.
Starting point is 00:07:17 I'm not saying he's going away. But if it's part-time at bats, then he's just not going to matter much in the average fantasy league. And I was excited about Brett Beatty because over the final two months of 2025, he hit 308 with seven homers, an 86 OPS. Seemed like he was finally living up to the potential. You know, every time he gets it back down to AAA, he just kills it there. And it was a little slow to develop. but seemed like he was coming around.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I was excited about the prospect of him playing every day. But now it's, if that happens, it's either going to be for another team or in the outfield where he himself would be an unnatural fit defensively. And so bad news for him. Yeah, and it is kind of weird, just from a Mets team perspective, I have a lot of Mets fans,
Starting point is 00:08:12 they're always kind of ranting and raving about what's going on this all season. There hasn't been much going on with the Mets. But a big talking point with David Stearns has been run prevention, right, and putting out this great defensive team behind them. And, you know, they did that with Marcus Semyon. They get rid of Pete Alonzo, who's, you know, not a great defender. But they bring in Boba Shett, who's just kind of an unnatural defensive fit, and we just don't even know how he's going to do at third base.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And then if they want to try Brett Bady in the outfield, that just kind of adds another weird element defensively to the team. So not exactly sure what they're going to do. I've seen kind of Mets and Red Sox fans on Twitter all. already talking about like a Beatty for Jaron Duran swap. I don't, I mean, that's pure speculation, but maybe. Probably I need to give up more than just Beatty. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:55 I did want to just point out over those final two months, you mentioned Beatty hit much better. The quality of contact during that time, 92 miles per hour average EV and a 12.5% barrel rate. And that was even with the ground ball rate over 50%. So when he found pitches that he can lift and, you know, do damage on, he did exactly that. So I was excited about Beatty as a sleeper.
Starting point is 00:09:16 We'll see what happens next. for the Mets. Let's take a quick break when we return. We'll talk about the ADPs. We'll do that right after this. Welcome back in fantasy baseball today. The big news, Bobauchette headed to the Mets on a three-year, $126 million deal that includes opt-outs after the first and second seasons. What about the ADP right now? So far, over at the NFBC in the month of January, Boba-Bchette is going at pick 105. I think whenever we see a player sign, it just automatically moves up a little bit, Scott. But as of now, he was sandwiched right between Corey C's Seeger and Trevor Story.
Starting point is 00:09:49 How would you rank those three? Seeger, Story, Bobeschet. I would go Seeger, Bobeshett, and then Story. And that's how I had them ranked originally. I don't really get why Trevor Story is getting so much benefit of the doubt after years of injuries and, you know, strikeout rates that maybe don't support even what he did. last year, it seems like early drafters are taking story of face value. And that seems a little reckless to me.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Makes him an easy choice to be a bust call this year. But Bichet, I actually had 80th overall prior to this signing. And like I said, I don't plan on changing him so much. I don't think his overall value changes so much, just the shape of the production. Well, Scott, great minds think alike. Frank Stamphill busts 1.0, currently out on the same. Trevor's story is on that list. I don't really have too many questions about the talent.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I just have questions about how many games we're getting and, you know, obviously all the injuries that Trevor's story has dealt with in his career. If we look at third base ADP, Bobauchette, again at 105, maybe he moves up a little bit. That would be just ahead of Alex Breggman and Eugenio Suarez. Do you agree with that, Scott, Bichette ahead of those two, Bregman, Suarez? Suarez is kind of hard because we don't know where he's going to play. Yeah, right. Where he goes makes a big difference if Suarez goes back to
Starting point is 00:11:17 Seattle, which is looking more likely, honestly. If that happens, then definitely going to have Bo Bichette ahead of him. Is that what my initial ranking shows? Where did I have Suarez? I think I have Suarez ahead of, yeah, I do. By more than I thought, actually. I have Suarez ahead of Bichet currently. So if he goes to a more neutral hitting environment or certainly a favorable hitting environment,
Starting point is 00:11:43 than I think Suarez, with the massive home run production, at least the potential for it, is going to remain ahead of Bichette. And, you know, obviously it's worth pointing out, yes, Bouchette will be third base eligible eventually, but you're going to have to draft a different third baseman at the start of the year because he's not going to have that eligibility right away. In CBS leagues, he should have it by the, well, not the second.
Starting point is 00:12:08 But you're going to have to draft another one. Yeah, true. That presents a complication, particularly in leagues like head-to-head where roster space is very limited. And yeah, it should be within the first week. By week two, you should be starting Bichette at third base. So, you know, maybe if your plan is to play Bichet at third base
Starting point is 00:12:30 in those shallower leagues, again, where late-round picks are still pretty useful players, you just use your last pick on a fill-in third base for a week, and it's not that big of a deal. You can swap them out for another player off the waiver wire. once you can move Bichette there. But getting back to your original question, I would put Bichet behind Suarez,
Starting point is 00:12:52 unless Suarez goes back to Seattle, but ahead of Bregman, who I think ended up in really one of the worst possible venues for his swing, and I think his stats are going to suffer for it. Getting into some of the fallout for, of this signing with Bobeshet going to the Mets. We spoke a lot about Brett Beatty already.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Rastor Resource has Beatty as a strong side platoon as their DH with Mark Vientos filling in as the short side platoon. I still think this is a pretty obvious trade situation for the Mets, whether or not they're going after Freddie Peralta or maybe a Red Sox outfielder
Starting point is 00:13:33 or whatever it might be, they can, or even Luis Robert. We've heard them link to Luis Robert in the past. They give up one of Bady or Viantos. It probably would be. Viantos and in a deal like that, I would imagine. So we'll see what happens with Beatty. It's still kind of up in the air, but obviously not great for him. What about the Blue Jays fallout?
Starting point is 00:13:50 I guess Ernie Clement and Andres Jimenez are just kind of locked in up the middle right now, second base and shortstop respectively. Cosima Okamoto seems pretty safe at third base for now. I know the Blue Jays have been aggressive this offseason. They were in on Tucker. They were in on bringing back Boba Chet. I just don't really see another player out there that makes sense. sense for the Blue Jays to go after.
Starting point is 00:14:13 I don't think they'll go after Eugenio Suarez. We haven't heard them link to Cody Bellinger at all either. So I just kind of think this Blue Jays team might be kind of settling in the way that it is right now. I did see them, I forget who said it.
Starting point is 00:14:28 One of the national writers said Bellinger that the Blue Jays might be a suitor for Bellinger. No, no. As far as the infield goes, Yeah, once Kazuma Okamoto signed, I know Ken Rosenthal said that was probably it for Bo Bichette coming back to Toronto and that the infield seems set with Ernie Clement moving to second. And Andres Hamed is a short.
Starting point is 00:14:54 So if it was true before Bichet even signed, I imagine is true after he's signed to. All right, Scott, you know what? Sound the alarms. We're not done yet. There is another new news item to talk about here. Oh, really? J.T. Real Muto is headed back to the Phillies on a three-year, $45 million deal. Obviously, this one, not nearly as big as Kobachet going over to the Mets,
Starting point is 00:15:19 but it is breaking news. I guess we can just quickly talk about it. J.T. Real Muto, getting up there and age a little bit. Is it an extension? I didn't even think he wasn't a free agent. He was. He was a free agent, yeah. He was? Yeah, yeah. He was. Yeah. He was the only real viable catcher, I guess. I mean, Danny Jansen signed with the Rangers, but yeah. Yeah. Real Muto back to the Philly. the offense has been declining the past couple of years. I think he's more a high-end catcher two at this point than somebody you would want as your catcher one in a one-catcher league.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Yeah, I mean, part of that is just he's a victim of the incredible surplus that has emerged at catcher over the past two years with so many up-and-comers there. It's been kind of a gradual decline for him, but as it's declined gradually, so many others have surpassed him. And particularly if you project more decline to come at for real muto at his age, then you really can't justify taking him as a number one catcher anymore. Still a fine choice in two catcher leagues,
Starting point is 00:16:21 and it's a good chance you'll get him for a discount there. I mean, we know Philly is a good spot for him. But I don't think there are going to be any miracles performed here. Statistically, I think he is, you know, a two, like a 15 homer guy, clearly second rate at the position now, and I think I'm 17th there. So, yeah, not a big draw in fantasy anymore.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Yeah, it's interesting. He still hits the ball decently hard, Real Muto, 90 mile per hour, average EV. Last season, 257, 12 homers, counting stats were fine, eight steals that still helps at the catcher position. The ADP in January for Real Muto was 2.30. The next catcher ahead of him is Carter Jensen at 193, then Kyle Teal at 185.
Starting point is 00:17:13 I could see Real Muto moving up a little bit, maybe around 200, a little bit higher, but I can't see him going ahead of either Kyle Teal or Carter Jensen. Not for me. Yep. I think we're in agreement there. All right, so again, big news, Bobichette to the Mets on a three-year deal, and we just got news that JT Real Muto back to the Phillies on a three-year deal as well. We are going to wrap there for Scott.
Starting point is 00:17:34 I am Frank. Thanks as always for tuning in to Fantasy Base. Ball's Day. Please make sure to follow and leave a five-star rating on Apple or Spotify, and we will be back again next week. Bye-bye. Mount Podcasts.
