Starting point is 00:00:00 Brandon Nimmo traded for Marcus Semyon. Let's break it down on Fantasy Baseball Today Express. Welcome in to FBT Express on Monday, November 24th, happy Thanksgiving week. I am Frank Sample, joined by Chris Towers. Figured we'll do a little bonus episode here. Talk about some news from the weekend because we did have some news. So let's get into it, Chris. Brandon Nimmo traded over to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semyon
Starting point is 00:00:26 in what appears to just be in exchange of bad contracts. Nimmo, a little bit younger at 32 years old, but has five years left on his deal, and Semyon is 35 years old with three years left on his deal. So just pretty much a swap of bad contracts here. Let's start with Brandon Nimmo. Has been very reliable for fantasy the past two years, between 23 and 25 homers, between 13 and 15 steals. What do you think about his fit with the Texas Rangers?
Starting point is 00:00:55 So neither of these teams plays in good hitters parks, But Global Life Field is actually the second worst hitters park in baseball, according to baseball savant's date over the past three seasons. And it's obviously a lineup downgrade. You know, he's not going to have Francisco Lindoran and Juan Soto getting on base ahead of him. So I think it's arrow pointing down for Brandon Nimmo, who is younger than Marcus Simeon and makes, you know, it's $5 million per year less. but there were some worrying signs for Brandon Nemo last season if you look under the hood. His defense, which has always been, you know, acceptable in a corner and playable in center in a pinch, took a big step back.
Starting point is 00:01:43 He was a below average defender last season. His sprint speed was below average last season. His bat speed fell about a mile per hour from the previous year. So that all suggests to me that Brandon Nimmo is a player who's going through a decline. And for our perspective, from a fantasy perspective, it's been a relatively gentle decline to date. You know, he still had the 25 homers, 13 steals. He's weirdly become a better base stealer over the past couple of seasons. I think Arrow pointing down for Brandon Nimmo, losing the lineup context.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I would guess he moves up. He'll probably bat lead off or something like that for the range. Rangers. So that'll help. And I think they needed someone who can get on base more consistently at the top of their lineup. So I understand the thought process for the Rangers. But from a fantasy perspective, you know, Nimmo's a solid number three outfielder and probably remains in that range. But, you know, you look at the early ADP and Jacob Marcy's going a little bit behind him. I'd rather have Jacob Marcy than Brandon Nimmo. I think Jerks and ProFar I'd rather have than Brandon Nimmo. think I'd rather roll the dice on Mike Trout than Brandon Nimmo. So,
Starting point is 00:02:58 uh, Nimmo's a somewhat safe outfielder, but there are enough red flags and the lineup downgrade that I do think he moves down in the rankings as a result of this. Yeah, the early ADP is 147 over at the NFBC for Brandon Nimmo, the 34th outfielder off the board. You mentioned some names going right behind him. One of those names is Taylor Ward going 17 picks behind him, the 38th outfielder in a change of scenery for both outfielders, who would you prefer Brendan Nimmo or Taylor Ward?
Starting point is 00:03:27 I think it mostly just depends. You get to that point in the draft what your team needs. If you need power, I think you go with Ward. Everything else, especially runs, steals, and especially runs and steals, I think I would go with Nimmo. But there is
Starting point is 00:03:42 some risk, I think, with Nimmo now. Yeah, and it's a good reminder that I think the shape of Nimmo's production is going to change in Texas. I, like you, expect him to probably lead off for the Rangers entering 2026. So look back at the counting stats from 2023 for Nimmo,
Starting point is 00:03:59 and it was 24 homers, 89 runs 68 RBI. I think I'd probably expect something like that. 10 to 12 steals mixed in there with the batting average has jumped around a little bit, but probably like 250 to 260, I would think, for Brendan Nimmo. Marcus Semyon on the other side,
Starting point is 00:04:14 he has been trending down offensively a sub-700 OPS each of the past two years, and last year got off to a brutal start. First two months, his OPS started with a five. And then we got to June and he was much better. He had a big June 930 OPS, I believe that month. And then came crashing back down in July and August.
Starting point is 00:04:34 So really, Chris, it was one really big month for Marcus Semyon and not much else there. What do you think about his fit with the New York Mets? I'm more inclined to buy into Marcus Simeon in 2026 as a result of this trade. It's mostly because it's a much better park and lineup. I would guess he's going to hit pretty low. In the lineup, obviously Lindora and Soto are going to be the top two. And then, I mean, the kind of elephant in the room here is the Mets have a need at corner outfield now. Was this just about making room for Kyle Tucker?
Starting point is 00:05:07 It might. I think there's a pretty good chance of that. There might be a good chance that they steal Cody Bellinger away from my Yankees. Yeah. So I think the Mets are going to do something for a corner outfield spot as a result of this, I think. And so Simeon's going to lose some of that, you know, huge playing time edge that he's had playing at the top of the lineup. He's going to bat lower. But I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:30 The initial reaction I've seen everyone have is like, why would the Mets do this? Marcus Simeon is washed up. And I think partially there's just a little bit of a fantasy tinge to a lot of the people that I'm following who are saying this because Simeon has fallen much more as a fantasy player. By baseball reference is war, him and Brandon Nimmo were basically tied. last year, which I was kind of surprised by. And the underlying physical characteristics haven't changed all that much for Marcus Simmy. He still makes a ton of contact.
Starting point is 00:06:00 He still has a good eye at the plate. Still makes good swing decisions. His bat speed was actually right in line with where it was in 2024 and 2023. So was his sprint speed. Everything kind of suggests that he hasn't fallen off quite that hard. He's gone from overperforming consistently. his underlying stats to underperforming the last couple of seasons. Well,
Starting point is 00:06:25 now it gets at least a little bit of a park upgrade. You know, he's going from like the 29th best park for hitters to the 20th. So it's not like a huge upgrade, but it's something. I think that'll help. So I think Simeon, you know, I don't know if he should be a top 12 second baseman,
Starting point is 00:06:42 although I didn't have him right far from there. But I think he's in that range. And you look at like Matt McLean is 13th and Bryson Stodd, is 12th and Luis Garcia's 14th, Otto Lopez 15th. I think that range makes sense for Marcus Simeon. You're always going to take a hit batting average with him even in the good years, but I think we can get 15 and 15 and some decent counting stats out of him. I don't think that's out of the question. So I think he can be a useful deeper middle infielder or second basement if you really punt on the position. It feels like a more tactical real-life
Starting point is 00:07:20 move for the New York Mets. David Stearns has really stressed run prevention this offseason and Semyon is still a really, really good defensive second base. Elite middle infield defense now. Yeah. So they get that out of Semen and again, it does kind of offer them some flexibility in the outfield, whether they want to go after a Tucker or Bellinger or trade for an outfielder or just have spots available for prospects. You know, we've heard Carson Benj's name brought up a few times already this off season. So it does afford the Mets a little bit of flexibility. Of course, they still need to address first base and Pete Alonzo. So I think that's, you know, they're going to have a pretty active offseason here.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Semyon, worth mentioning that his season did end last year with a left foot fracture, and he's getting a little bit older, so that, you know, injuries could start to factor in here a little bit as well. The early ADP, I thought it was really low before this trade. It's probably going to go up now, but 271 over at the NFBC as the 21st second basement off the board, behind Lenin Sosa, behind Brett Bady. I don't really have high expectations for Semen at this point, but even that feels a little bit low.
Starting point is 00:08:22 I think someone that can hit 2.30, 240, like you said, 15, 15, perhaps a little bit undervalued at that cost, but I do think he's probably going to move up. Maybe into like that 225-ish range in the middle infield. What about the fallout for the rest of these teams here, the Mets and the Rangers here? I mentioned the Mets outfield is wide open. We both think they're going to wind up making some moves here. But Carson Benj is a name that has already been dropped by David Stearns. He is one of their top prospects.
Starting point is 00:08:52 He's turning 23 in January. Just had a productive season in the minors at 281 with 15 homers, 22 steals, and 857 OPS across four different levels. And then on the Ranger's side of things, Rostal Resource has Josh Smith as the Strongside platoon at second base. He's solid. I think we kind of know who he is the last couple of years. It's 250 to 260, 10 to 12 home runs and steals each there.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Do you have anything to add on Carson Benj or Josh Smith? for the Metson Rangers. Benj did not hit well at AAA. He hit 178 after getting called up in 24 games. It was a 188 Babbat. His plate discipline was still very good. There's some speed. There's a little bit of pop there.
Starting point is 00:09:35 I know there were some prospect people who thought he was major league ready even while he was struggling at AAA. So I do think Carson Benj is definitely an aim to keep an eye on. Weirdly kind of Brandon Nemo traits, walks a lot. doesn't have huge power or speed. I think he has more speed, but yeah. Yeah, a faster player, but like 22 stolen bases last season, he's not like a huge base dealer.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I think you could expect the upside to look something like Brandon Nimmo. And I do expect Carson Benj to be the starting center fielder for the Mets. It's just a question of who's the left fielder? I think it's Kyle Tucker. I think it's going to be caught Tucker. The Rangers, though. Don't say that.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Don't say that, Chris, please. I don't know what to do about the Rangers. because I kind of assumed that this was a team on the verge of a rebuild. There'd been some rumblings about maybe Corey Seeger being on the move, and then they take on five years of a 32-year-old Brandon M. I don't quite understand. So maybe it's more of a retool. But, yeah, maybe Josh Smith is a starting second baseman for them.
Starting point is 00:10:43 I would hope if they're trying to win next season, they could do a little better than that. I would guess the starting second basement for the Rangers is not on the roster yet. Josh Smith, just keep this in mind. Again, he's not a great player, but for those who play in deeper leagues and you want flexibility on your roster, eligible everywhere. He has first base, third base shortstop eligibility, and if he plays second, he'll gain that.
Starting point is 00:11:05 So every single infield position could be pretty valuable for Josh Smith in those deeper leagues. He's been outfield eligible as recently as last year, I believe. Yeah. He was outfield eligible in 2020. He got 17 games there. We did have some other news items from the weekend, so let's quickly run through those. The Cubs sign reliever Phil Maton to a two-year deal
Starting point is 00:11:26 with an option for the third year. He was really good this past season. Had a 279 ERA 106 whip, 11.9K per 9. Picked up some saves for the Rangers down the stretch. That was kind of out of necessity there. Any chance that he mixes in for saves with the Cubs here, or are you expecting Daniel Palencia to still be the, quote unquote closer to start the year.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I would give the edge to Daniel Palencia right now, but this definitely feels like one that could change in spring. I would think Palencia goes into spring training as the favorite for saves, and then we'll take it from there. Ryan Helsley, we learned this weekend, is being viewed by multiple teams, including the Detroit Tigers as a starter.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Seems a little weird. I know we've had some success stories in the last few years. Seth Lugo, Michael King, Clay Holmes have all had varying degrees of success as starting pitchers. This feels like jumping the shark on the let's move a closer to reliever. Ryan Halsley has a weird, weird, funky mechanics. He's had a lot of trouble staying healthy. He was awful last season, although it appears that there was a pitch tipping issue there. And he throws fastballs and sliders 90% of the time.
Starting point is 00:12:46 So I will see. I didn't think Clay Holmes really going to work as a starter, and he was pretty good for about half a season and then fine overall. So maybe Ryan Helsie can do the same thing, but my expectations would not be super high if he was moved to the rotation. He does have some experience starting in the minors, albeit a pretty long ways back. We're talking about like 20.
Starting point is 00:13:12 I think he's 2018 is the last time he started the game, right? 2018 and 2017. Which he had some success. That was also true of Clay Holmes. Yeah. So you have to go a while back. If he goes to the right organization that, you know, is smart and knows how to kind of do things like this,
Starting point is 00:13:27 maybe it can work, but he's still a flamethrower. I bet against it. It was a really, really good closer. So I think for fantasy, we want Ryan Helsie to wind up somewhere as a potential closer. That's probably the best use of him as a fantasy asset. Especially knowing that he had the pitch tipping issue in August.
Starting point is 00:13:44 was really, really bad, and then kind of got on track again down the stretch. We also had the non-tender deadline on Friday as well. We had a bunch of names, but I think the two most notable came from the aforementioned Texas Rangers with catcher Jonah Heim and outfielder Adolius Garcia. So, Chris, the question here, Adolius Garcia, who turns 33 in March and has a sub-700 OPS two years in a row. Is he done? I lean towards him being done.
Starting point is 00:14:14 given his age. I mean, that whole Rangers team that won the World Series three years ago, remember that? That was a thing the Rangers did three years ago, not that long ago. I was there for the clincher. Everyone's old. Like that felt, because that team kind of came out of nowhere. And so you assume that a team like that is like, oh, everybody's like 25.
Starting point is 00:14:36 No. Everybody on that team was like 31, 32, 33 last year. So Adoles Garcia was one of those guys. He'll be 33 this year. Look, maybe he goes to a better home park and his all or nothing power swing plays a little better somewhere that's a little more forgiving. But it's not like he was especially held back by Glovel Life Field. Globe Life Park? Field.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Yeah. It was a weird. Weird decision to name the stadiums the same thing. Very confusing for people like me. You know how I remember it? And someone years ago pointed this out, Globe Life Park starts with a P, so that's the past. Globe Life Field F for future. That's how I remember it so.
Starting point is 00:15:18 Sure. That works. I think Adolias Garcia is likely done, but I mean, look, if the Rockies want to go out and sign him, then I'll be interested, yeah, sure. But I think it's pretty unlikely he's going to matter much for fantasy. Yeah, Adolias Garcia, he has dealt with some injuries the past couple years. Yeah, he's had knee injuries and both knees over the past couple years. So that might have contributed the,
Starting point is 00:15:43 The bat speed has fallen off quite a bit as well. Two years ago, it was in the 71st percentile. It's dropped to 54th and 49th. Again, it could be due to injury, but he's also getting older. So keep those things in mind. Not sure how much is left in Adolias Garcia's bat. The big news from Sunday again, Brandon Nimmo traded over to the Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semyon,
Starting point is 00:16:06 and that is just the beginning. I'm sure we're going to have a bunch of crazy stuff to talk about over the next month, but for now, If you want more extensive fantasy baseball coverage, listen to our full-lane podcast, Fantasy Baseball Today on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere else podcasts are found.
