Starting point is 00:00:00 Now here's Frank Scott and Chris. The Blue Jays are not messing around. Welcome in to an emergency edition of Fantasy Baseball today on Thanksgiving Eve. Here we are. I am Frank Stamphill, joined by Chris Towers. Dylan Seas just signed a massive deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. Seven years, $210 million. Massive deal, according to what I researched.
Starting point is 00:00:24 This is tied for the seventh highest pitcher contract in MLB history. Ken Rosenthal did say. say there are deferrals in the deal. We're not sure how much of the money is actually deferred as of now. We do know that Dylan Seas is incredibly talented, Chris, but also inconsistent from year to year. Coming off a 455 ERA, a 133 whip, but did have 215 strikeouts over 168 innings pitched. To me, it almost doesn't even matter where C's pitches.
Starting point is 00:00:53 When he's on, he's nearly unhittable. The biggest question is, can the Blue Jays get that out of him more consistently? I don't know the answer to you. I can see a case to be made that like, oh, yeah, change of scenery, maybe, you know, new, you know, new voices talking to him. I don't know. He's been the same guy in Chicago and San Diego. I don't really think there's much reason to think that Dillan Seas will suddenly stop being Dillen C's. But I also will say that I don't think that matters when you're looking at the contract.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Like, I don't know. I think people might bump up against $210 million. for a guy coming off a 458-5 ERA and 133 whip and all that. But Blake Snell a year ago, he was a year older than Dylan C's, got five years 182. I think that's basically the same thing, right? And they're kind of the same guy. I think Snell probably has a little more upside on a per start or per week or per month basis, but a lot more durability with CIS too. Right.
Starting point is 00:01:56 That's what I was going to say is that they're both really mercurial pitchers, maybe Snell, has a little higher upside but cease hasn't missed a start as a professional that i can find he's had he had a triceps issue in 2019 that he pitched through and he had a forearm cramp earlier in 2025 didn't miss a start in either time there aren't a lot of guys he's not quite an innings either right like he's never gotten to 190 innings um because he's inefficient and doesn't go as deep into games as you'd like but in terms of taking the ball every fifth or six day there's basically nobody like dylan ciss who has five straight seasons of 200 plus strikeouts in the same span no other pitcher has more than three seasons of 200 plus strikeouts so cease is i think
Starting point is 00:02:46 on a volume basis the the premier strikeout pitcher in baseball we know the upside when he's on is incredibly high and yeah maybe there's a chance that the blue jays unlock something but they don't I think that the key takeaway here is they don't need to. This is a guy who is probably more like a mid-3s ERA pitcher than the 220 that he had in 2021 or the 455 that he had last season. You average it all out and, you know, 350, 360 is probably a reasonable expectation, but with a lot of upside on top of that. And I think from a fantasy perspective, he's going to be a big target of mine this year. I can't tell if those are good or bad meows in the background. Indifferent, I think. She just wants to be let out of the room. Got it, got it. Knock on wood,
Starting point is 00:03:38 look, you pointed this out, but Cise has been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball for now. 32 plus starts in five straight seasons. So that is one of the main positive attributes for Dillon Cis is the fact that he has been as durable as he is so far in his career. And as we pointed out many times, 455 ERA, but the underlying ERA estimators all much better this past season. 356 FIP, 356 X-FIP, 358 Sierra, 346 expected ERA. All four of those numbers were top 16 among qualified starting pitchers this past season, and are all pretty much in line with his ERA estimators from the year prior when he had a 347 ERA and a 107 whip.
Starting point is 00:04:24 So he is kind of a confounding pitcher. And Scott and I spoke about this recently. I'm not sure you were on that episode, Chris. If you look at the years where things go poorly for Dylan C's, it's all Babbup related. And it's kind of hard to explain, right? Because if you look at his Babbup the last five years working backwards, it's 320-263, 330-3609.
Starting point is 00:04:47 The two seasons with a sub-300 Babbab-b, were by far his best seasons for fantasy. And to be honest, I'm not exactly sure what defensive metrics to look up for like team defense, but based on outs above average and defensive run saved, the Blue Jays were
Starting point is 00:05:03 decent to significantly better than the Padres. So if you just want to look at, hey, is a defense behind him better now? The answer is yes. And this is a situation where seeing them sign Dillon C's, I mean, look, this might already be the case now that they've signed Dillian C's. You certainly don't want them resigning
Starting point is 00:05:22 Boba Chet to play shortstop. That would probably not be great, for their defense, maybe if they sign him as a second baseman. Right. I think they can do that. Andres Jimenez proved in the playoffs that he could still play shortstop at a really high level. So I think that would be fine. The one thing I do want to point out with Cease is it's not all Babbitt variants.
Starting point is 00:05:42 You know, we do have the ability to account for quality of contact loud. And the worst season for him was 2023 when he had a 383 expected Wobon contact. He had a 410 XERA. otherwise he's been 365 xERA or better five straight seasons so i i think there's something to it's just random variance i think he has struggled with the quality of contact he allows at times um but on the whole i i i think i like this deal a lot for the blue jays i think getting a high variance pitcher who you can count on which kind of feels like a a little bit of a uh uh I don't know. I can't think of the word. It's a holiday. I can't think of words right now.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Inconsistency, I suppose, in how you view him, but you know he's going to take the ball every fifth or six day. You know he's got the upside in a big game to shove and push you to the next level. So I think it's a perfectly reasonable contract. I think this is what Dylan Seas was probably always going to get and should have gotten. And from a fantasy perspective, I think he's a pretty nice target right now. His ADP is right around 85th in these early drafts that we're seeing. It's right around the 20th starting pitcher off the board. And you look at the guys directly ahead of him. And it's names like George Kirby, who I don't think is a safer bet than Dylan C. Certainly.
Starting point is 00:07:18 or Spencer Schwellenbach, obviously we love the upside, but there's a lot of uncertainty about the workload there. Joe Ryan, he's probably safer, but kind of similar to Dillon C's. There's been a lot of ups and downs throughout Joe Ryan's career as well. So I think that range makes perfect sense, and I will probably be drafting Dillan Seas quite a bit if his price remains around the 20th starting pitcher. Yeah, it's exactly SP20 on the nose there.
Starting point is 00:07:48 some of the names he's going around just ahead of him. He's actually sandwiched by Braves pitchers right now. Spencer's Spencer. Spencers, it's Swelhambach and Spencer Shrider. And then Lizarro. Strader is that expensive. Yeah, I'm shocked. It does shock me as well.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Jesus Lazzardo also right in this range, I guess. That's the same guy. From a perspective of, hey, there are inconsistencies, but there's a lot of just upside and especially strikeout upside. That does make sense? My next question was, do you think he moves up a tier now that he's signed. I don't know why this happens, but with NFBC ADP, once a player signs, he usually moves up in ADP, does he get up into that next tier where Kirby is going at 66,
Starting point is 00:08:30 and Joe Ryan is at 63, and Freddie Peralt is at 60? Can you see CIS getting up into that like 60 to 65 range in ADP? It's not impossible, but like a 20 point, 15 point jump in overall ADP is pretty extreme. It probably shouldn't happen, but I can see it happening. Well, I kind of think he should be going in that range anyway. So if he did jump up to there, it would be like, well, maybe the process that led it to Dylan Cease being a top 65 pick wasn't great, but it's probably reasonable that he should be a top 65 pick. So I think it's fine. I have him as my number 20 SP. I think him and Blake Snell are basically the same guy. And it just kind of, If you want to shoot for a little more upside, Snell's got it.
Starting point is 00:09:19 But I think I'd rather have CIS than Blake Snell. I think I'd rather have Sniece cease than Freddie Peralta or Nick Povetta or Shohe Otani if you're only drafting pitchers. So I think right around 20 makes a lot of sense. But yeah, he's fine there. Yeah, he is going 25 picks behind Blake Snell. So I guess if you just kind of want to wait a little bit for a little bit. I think Snell is easily the pick between the two of them. Chris, you say this often from year to year is you want to buy Dylan C's when he's coming off
Starting point is 00:09:51 these bad years and sell him when he's coming off a good one. And honestly, I thought the price would be a little bit better, you know, just based on the way that the season went. Typically, when we've gotten a bad Dylan C's season, he's more so outside the top 180p. But I guess that just kind of goes to show how sharp the market is and how sharp everyone is and how much they expect Dylan C's to bounce back heading into the season. I guess one thing we didn't really talk about, Any concern about him moving from the NL. West to the A.L. East where, you know, obviously he'll have to face the Yankees and the Red Sox. Granted, you know, they don't face their division opponents as much anymore. But, you know, he is going to smaller ballparks in that division, whereas he was pitching in Petco. He would go to Oracle Park. Still had to go to Corris Field and L.A. so maybe it's a wash. What do you think about just the move going from the NL. West to the A.L. East?
Starting point is 00:10:41 It's probably a slight downgrade in terms of the home park, although Toronto's not a great hitters park. But I think on the whole, the division context doesn't worry me so much. I know the Rockies are terrible. They had the 12th most runs scored at home. Coursefield is still course field, even though it's the Rockies. Obviously, the Dodgers are in that rotation. They're pretty tough. The Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:11:08 The Debacks have a good lineup, too. Yeah. Debacks scored a ton of. runs. So I don't really think the, if anything, I think the team context might be a little better because of defense. But overall, like you said at the top, I almost called him Blake Snell. That's how I think I just wrote an article about it. And I think I had to delete Blake Snell three times when I meant to write Dillon C's as well. I don't know if context matters so much for Dillon Cis. He is both the ultimate arbiter of his own success.
Starting point is 00:11:41 and seemingly completely out of touch with his own success in a weird way. It's like those days when he's on, he's missing bats and he's not walking everyone or wasting three pitches per at bat, he's unhittable. And it doesn't matter where he pitches. And, you know, there's the Babbitt fluctuation from year to year. Yeah, that'll happen. But on the whole, I think if you go in expecting something like a 360 to 370 ERA and a top five strikeout pitcher in base, ball, you probably won't be disappointed, although you might be. Yeah. Again, that is Dylan C's headed over to the Toronto Blue Jays who clearly are not messing around this all season.
Starting point is 00:12:23 They're updated rotation. C's up at the top. They have Kevin Gosman, Shane Bieber, who re-signed with them as well, Trey Savage and Jose Burrios. Maybe they even go out and make another deal, you know, even if it's a one-year kind of veteran-type contract. I don't think this takes them out of the chance of getting like a Boba Chet. Maybe it does with Kyle Tucker, although they have been linked to him quite a bit. So we'll see. I still think that they have one more big offensive move in them,
Starting point is 00:12:49 whether or not that's Kyle Tucker or Bobichette. We will wait and see there on the Toronto Blue Jays. Parvarez pitching staff is going to be a problem. Not in the like the way the kids say where it's like, oh, it's not a good problem. No, no, it's going to be a problem for the Padres, I think. Yeah, it's not a great look for the Padres right now, but I think we pretty much expected Dylan C's to leave there anyway. So I think the Padres are going to have to, A, either get creative or B,
Starting point is 00:13:22 with, we learned recently about the sale of their team and everything. Maybe they start to just kind of like trade pieces off and try and kind of like replenish, kind of finagle things around there. So we'll see what happens with the Padres this offseason. And we're going to wrap there for Chris. I am Frank. Thanks as always for tuning in to fantasy baseball today. Please make sure to follow and leave a five-star rating on Apple or Spotify. And we will be back again, hopefully next week.
Starting point is 00:13:47 But who knows what's going on? Bye-bye. Mount Podcasts.
