Let's take an early look at 2026 first base rankings up next on Fantasy Baseball Today Express. Welcome in to FBT Express on Tuesday, October 21st. I am Frank Sample joined by Chris Towers. Way too early, 26 first base rankings, and we will start up at the top. Numbers 1 and 2, Nick Kurtz and Vlad Jr. Let's stop there, Chris. Defend yourself. Kurtz over Vlad.

I don't think anyone's. going to question this actually. It's actually a separate question. I think should Nick Kurtz be the number one player and will he be the number one player? I think will he is no question. I don't think anybody's going to rank Vlad Jr. ahead of Nick Kurtz. I'd be frankly shocked, even though personally I did at least consider it because Nick Kurtz is this awesome, what, 22-year-old prospect who hits massive home runs, had a four-homber game, was one of the best hitters in baseball this season on a per-game basis, had one of the best rookie seasons of all time.

I think he was the sixth player in MLB history with an OPS over 1,000 in at least 450 play appearances as a rookie. And the other guys are like Aaron Judge and Ted Williams and Bernie Carbo, you know, legends. And so I think a lot of people are going to look at it and make the mistake of saying, well, look what he did as a rookie. Imagine what it's going to look like when he's better. And it's like, that's not really how it works.

He probably, Nick Kurtz might have had his best season as a rookie. And that happens sometimes. Pete Alonzo. Pete Alonzo had his best season as rookie. Aaron Judge, it took him like, what, five or six years to have a better season than his rookie season. Like, sometimes that just happens. And it doesn't mean that player's a fluke or that they aren't actually that good, but it just means that he might have played over his head.

And he's probably not a 290 hitter. He's probably more like a 255, 260 hitter. And I think the power is legit. And 40 homers is a reasonable expectation. And there might be 50 homer upside here as soon as this year. And there's a lot to like about Nick Kurtz. It's just Vlad Jr. has had 117 really good games in a row as well. And I think it's going to be easy for people to forget that because last season, Nick

Hertz was so much better. Nick Hurts is going to be a better power hitter, probably better run. production. Vlad Jr. might hit 3.30 next year, though. And he might hit 35 homers. And that might be enough to bridge the gap. So I think it should be close.

I think it should be more like Kurtz is a one two turn type guy in a 12 team league. And Vlad's more like a two three turn. So 24th overall versus 36th overall. My guess is it's going to be more like Kurtz is a top 15 pick. And Vlad's more like 25 to 30. In which case, I'm probably not going to draft Nick Kurtz in 20. 26. Nick Kurtz was incredible this year. I absolutely trust in the power. I think he's a 40 home run hiter as soon as next season with the upside to maybe hit 50 plus home runs. Some questions there

about strikeouts and batting average. Vlad Jr., he's frustrating in a different way. We know how talented he is. We're seeing it in the postseason right now. He just doesn't consistently deliver that for fantasy in the regular season as much as I think he's capable of doing. So that part of it is kind of frustrating. Moving down your first base rankings, we get to a bit of a tier here. Three through seven. Kind of feels like you can rank these in a different order, depending on who you ask. But you have Pete Alonzo, Bryce Harper, Raphael Devers, Matt Olson, Freddie Freibon. Mostly kind of aging superstars here, varying skill sets and questions across the board. Pete Alonzo, huge year. He's a free agent this offseason. Bryce Harper, still very good, but routinely misses time due to injury. Raphael Devers

strikeouts getting up there, batting average dropped, now plays in Oracle Park. Matt Olson, solid, reliable, more of an accumulator, power hasn't been there since 2023, and Freddie Freeman seems like, you know, the age is kind of catching up at this point, but this kind of feels like a tier of its own

and likely all still very good fantasy options for next year. Yeah, I think very, very good. Would be surprised if one of these guys wasn't out of this tier by this. time next year though just given the ages of pretty much everyone the risk factors that you see with you know alonzo there was a little bit in the uh the contact rate zone contact yeah zone contact rate started to dip um rafel devers is in real danger zone when it comes to his contact rates as well so there are just you can see the way things go wrong for any of these guys they're all also

superstar caliber hitters and if matt olson goes back out and has a 45 homer season next year I wouldn't really be surprised. If Freddie Freeman hits 315, I wouldn't really be surprised. If Bryce Harper hits 35 homers and steals 50 bases, I wouldn't really be surprised. The one thing I'll note here is Alonzo being a free agent. City Field is not a great place to hit. It's actually a pretty tough place to hit. But we know it works there.

We know it's a great lineup hitting behind Juan Soto and Francisco Indore. Going to be one of the leaders in RBI as long as he's there and productive. Hope he just resigns so we don't have any uncertainty about a new, how he fits in a new lineup or anything like that. We know it works here. Let's just get it done quickly. Don't let this linger until February or March again. I'll just bring up one team and it's the one team we would love all hitters to go to. The Cincinnati Reds and the only reason is because we started to hear some whispers.

Maybe it was, you know, leverage by the agent. They should do that. That would be awesome. There were some whispers last offseason that the Reds were going to try for Pete Alonzo. So we'll see. They still need first base help. Yeah, that would be. pretty awesome, but I also would be totally fine with him going back to the Mets next year as well.

Let's take a quick break and we'll be back right after this. 8 through 12 in Chris's first base rankings for next season. We have Josh Naler, Vinnie Pass Quantino, Vinnie Pee! Baby! Tyler Soderstrum, Yandy Diaz, and Spencer Torkelson. Josh Naler, also a free agent this offseason. He also, randomly, is coming off a 30-steel season. And this is one of the biggest fantasy questions.

for next season. It's also one of the biggest questions when trying to project Josh Naylor for next year. Yeah, he was the slowest player to ever steal 30 bases, at least since Stackass began tracking players speed in 2015. And it wasn't close. Before this season, the slowest player to steal 30 bases was Kyle Tucker in 2023. He had 30 steals on like 33rd percentile sprint speed. Juan Soto had 38 this year on 18th percentile sprint speed. And he blew Josh Naylor out of the water. Josh Naylor stole 30 bases with third percentile sprint speed. So I have no idea what to make of that.

It mostly started when he got to the Mariners. He had 19 steals in 54 games. That's like a 60 steel pace over a third of a season. I don't expect him to be a 20 steel guy next season. I'd be surprised if he was a 15 steel guy. It reminds me of Willie Adamas stealing a career high, heading into his free agency season. He went back down to Earth.

It was still the second highest total of his career. He's still still 12, but I would think Nailer 12 to 15 is probably the ceiling of what I'm expecting. And other than that, he was fine this season. You know, 295 batting average is really good, but the power numbers, just 20 homers, I think. I am probably not going to pay the price for Josh Nailer this season, especially if people are expecting him to be a stolen base source. I don't think you can go into next season expecting Josh Nailer to be a goal. big source of steals. These last four here,

Vinnie Pasquantino, Vinnie Pasquitino, Tyler Soderstrum, Yandy Diaz, Spencer Torkelson. The top three, I think I would be okay if I just kind of wound up with those guys as my starting first baseman.

Once you get into Torkelson and beyond, that kind of feels like, are you're getting into the fallback options, maybe just kind of settling at that point at the position. Yeah, are we like sure Spencer Torkelson's better than Christian Walker? Even, I know Christian Walker was a huge disappointment this season. He finished with 27 homers and 87 RBI.

The batting average, I don't think, was much better for Torkelson. So I do think Torkelson maybe represents the start of an iffy tier where certainly a fallback option. I think you could put Soderstrum in there, but I feel a little more confident in the overall strengths as a hitter. So I put Torquess in there with like Michael Bush, Kyle Manzardo. Jonathan Arronda has a kind of different skill set. It's more batting average forward. but I think all of those guys, I feel a lot better about them as my corner infielder.

And I would rather just wait than be the one to reach for Spencer Torkelson, especially, I think.
