Starting point is 00:00:00 15 prospects who could be called up very soon. Let's discuss on Fantasy Baseball Today Express. Welcome in to FBT Express on Thursday, August 14th. I am Frank Stample joined by Scott White, and we've got 15 prospects who could be called up very soon. In fact, two of them, we know, are already getting called up. We'll throw them at you in groups of five. Can I first explain why they're likely to get called up soon?
Starting point is 00:00:27 Yes, you should. Probably important to do. Friday, August 15th, that marks the day when there are 45 days left on the Major League calendar, which means any player called up from that day forward will retain his rookie eligibility for next year. And that's important because if a player, if a rookie is on a major league roster from start to finish in his rookie season, and he places high enough in awards voting, especially rookie of the year that first year, but even other awards in future seasons, then his team has a chance to score extra draft picks because of that.
Starting point is 00:01:07 So retaining that rookie eligibility for a full season is critical. And that's why a lot of teams wait until this point, ever since the latest CBA teams have waited until this point to call up some of their big prospects. Yeah. And we've seen that happen with Corby and Carroll, Gunner Henderson. then they went on the next year to actually win rookie of the year and actually earn those teams more draft picks.
Starting point is 00:01:34 So, yes, this has become a pretty regular thing in Major League Baseball. So we'll throw these names at you in groups of five. The two names we know are already getting called up, Owen Casey of the Cubs and Nolan McLean of the Mets, three others here, Samuel Bessio of the Orioles, Dylan Beaver of the Orioles, and J.J. Weatherholt with the Cardinals. Yeah, we've talked about Weatherholt, Beaver.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Bessayo a lot. Bessio and beavers have been crushing it. The miners, the Orioles have space for them. Bessayo has an argument as the top prospect of baseball, potentially right now. So, you know, they obviously are among the highest
Starting point is 00:02:10 in prospects to stash. Let's focus a little more on the two that we've learned are coming up, Nolan McLean and Owen Casey. Casey is actually coming up Thursday, so the day before that 45-day cut off, which is strange. Apparently, the motivation here
Starting point is 00:02:25 was it was the last. game of a three-game series in Toronto, and Casey grew up in the Toronto area. So it's very nice of the Cubs to do that, but it probably means they're going to have to send him back down at some point so that he doesn't exceed the 45 games on the active roster. That would cost him rookie eligibility. But great prospects, certainly deserving of this promotion. Big power, that's always been the case. He's learned to tap into it more this year. and since the start of June, 49 games, Casey's batting 3.43 with 15 homers and 1118 OPS.
Starting point is 00:03:01 The problem, not only is he likely to get sent back down, there's not really a spot for him in the Cubs lineup. They're full of outfielders. They've got four starting already, counting the D.H spot with, say, Suzuki. So Casey probably going to start Thursday in Toronto, but he might just be filling in otherwise. I have more interest in Nolan McLean because he could keep a spot in the MetLife. rotation and has had a breakout season at AAA, moved way up prospect list as a result, especially good in his last seven starts of AAA. It's been a great ground ball pitcher all season, 55% ground ball rate, but really saw the
Starting point is 00:03:42 strikeouts take off in its last seven starts, 12.4K per 9. So I think McLean, Nolan McLean of interest everywhere. All right, let's take a quick break. And when we return, we'll talk about more prospects right after. this. Welcome back in FBT Express. We're taking a look at prospects who could be called up very soon. And the next group includes Bubba Chandler of the Pirates, Robbie Snelling of the Marlins, Spencer Jones with the Yankees, Quinn Matthews with the Cardinals and Sal Stewart of the Reds. Yeah, interesting group here. Robbie Snelling, former big prospect of the Padre system two years ago, struggled last year, got traded to the Marlins, gotten back on track. He's of a dominant year, particularly last five AAA starts, a 163 array for Robbie Snelling.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And he's got room to add innings still. Like, he's not really in the danger zone as far as accumulating innings. So I think he's a pretty easy addition to the Marlins rotation. Quinn Matthews has had a terrible season for the Cardinals, but his last two starts have looked a lot better and was considered a very high-end prospect coming into the season. if I could also mention quickly here Bubba Chandler who has been the most discussed prospect in this segment all season long
Starting point is 00:05:00 still hasn't been promoted and he's been pretty horrible lately at AAA 694 ERA in his last five starts the control has really gotten away from him I think they just got to promote him up promote him the pirates and see how it goes
Starting point is 00:05:16 now that they know he's going to preserve rookie eligibility for next year just see how it goes goes. Like he was dominating earlier this season. There's a lot of people theorizing that he's just frustrated down there because he had already earned his promotion. He had already expected to be up by this point. Just call him up. Use his evaluation period. If he struggles then, okay, he'll compete for a job next spring. But he's spinning his wheels at AAA. It seems like Bubba Chandler. All right. The final group here includes Justin Crawford of the Phillies here.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Joe Stinson Garcia, who also goes by the password because his name is quite difficult there to read. Of the Red Sox, Andrew Painter of the Phillies, Bryce Eldridge with the Giants, and Brendan Sprout with the Mets. What do we have on this group here? So these are the least likely five of the 15 to be promoted. And if they are promoted for some of them, for the top two, Justin Crawford and Justinin Garcia, it would seem like only bit roles. I mean, Justin Crawford profiles similarly to his dad, Carl Crawford. Great batting average, great speed.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Power to dream on, but he hasn't really learned to maximize that yet. I think he would be up as a part-timer and a pinch runner for the Phillies, but an interesting prospect for sure. Eldridge, Bryce Eldridge for the Giants, their obvious first basement of the future, one of the biggest power prospects in the miners and is at AAA. It's been striking out a lot of AAA, particularly recently. So I don't know that they're ready to pull the rip court on Bryce Eldridge,
Starting point is 00:06:56 but by September, when rosters expand, maybe they will be. And then finally, Brandon Sprote here. I mentioned Quinn Matthews, who's also on this list for the Cardinals, got off to a terrible start this year, but has turned things around in his last two. Well, Brandon Sprode of the Mets is more like the last seven that he's turned things around. A 115 ERA in his last seven starts a AAA. Prior to that, he had a 595-year area. So it's been a stark contrast here for Sprote.
Starting point is 00:07:33 The Mets almost decided to go with him for that rotation opening instead of Nolan McLean. There's not room for both of them right now, which is why I don't really think Sprote will be up like Friday. but it's similar to what I was saying for Eldridge by September maybe. You know, even more likely in the case of a pitcher like Sprote, somebody else gets hurt. Pitchers get hurt all the time. He's probably the next man up, especially since calling him up would ensure he remains a rookie next year.
Starting point is 00:08:03 All right.
