Welcome to the Fantasy Baseball Today podcast from CBS Sports.
Got a fantasy question, email Fantasy Baseball at CBSI.com.
Get ready to win your lead.
Now here's Frank, Scott, and Chris.
Everybody's hurt.
Welcome in to Fantasy Baseball today on Monday, March 18th.
I am Frank Sample joined by Scott White and Chris Towers.
Today on the show, we have all of the injury updates, and there are way too many of them.
I had my Top Wars salary cap auction draft this weekend.
15 Team Roto with OBP instead of batting average.
We'll recap my team a little bit later on.
And the moment that many of you have been waiting for
will reveal all of our listener league participants,
but that will happen later on in the podcast.
I hate to start with negativity, but it must be done.
There was just so much news this weekend, so many injuries.
And Chris, I am sorry.
But Yuri Perez reported soreness in his elbow on Thursday,
and that's in addition to this fingernail issue that he's been dealing with.
Well, he'll undergo further testing on the elbow over the next coming days
to determine the severity of this injury.
And it was a crazy scene on Saturday.
My Tau Wars draft is going on.
The Yuri Perez news came out.
Only one person in the room knew about it.
That was not the person who nominated or the person who won him.
Yuri Perez wound up going for $12, and then immediately after people start chattering.
Whoa, whoa, what's going on? What's the latest news?
Yuri Perez, this is the news that came out, and unfortunately, that's the way that it played out.
Brutal stuff, but Chris, we'll start with you.
This obviously sucks just because Yuri Perez is one of the most electric arms in baseball,
and we're excited to draft him.
What happens now?
Is he undraftable until we learn more news?
I don't know.
I don't want to talk about it.
That's your job, Chris.
I don't. I'm sorry.
Yeah, I mean, he's probably going to have Tommy John surgery.
I don't know. I haven't seen his MRI.
They haven't said anything, but he's a 20-year-old pitcher who throws 99 miles an hour.
This is what happens.
And this is why we shouldn't get excited about anything.
Because nothing good will ever happen.
And one day the sun will burn out and will all be dust.
And it doesn't matter.
All right.
I don't know, man.
That's a really grim, pessimistic view on the situation,
but that's how it might play out.
Scott, I'll ask you, is Yuri Perez undraftable until we find out more?
I'm not emotionally prepared for this conversation, guys.
I've been blocking out of my mind all weekend.
I don't want to think about it.
Yeah, I mean, I kind of didn't want to think about it either.
I haven't adjusted my rankings yet.
I was adjusting it so much last week.
And I, you know, I just needed a.
break from adjusting it. I think everybody understood what this likely means for Yuri Perez.
Until we have the MRI back, it's not for sure. And given the upside, he probably still needs to
be drafted at some point in every league at a point where, like, obviously, you realize I'm
probably going to drop whoever I take here anyway. So, you know, let's hopefully get an extreme
bargain here. But there hasn't been, I haven't seen any amount of
trying to explain this away on the part of the Marlins.
And maybe it's just because they don't have as much media coverage as the Yankees do
because we saw a lot of that with Garrett Cole.
And so that kept, I think, hope alive.
But you're not seeing it for Yuri Perez.
So I'm expecting it's not going to be good news.
I've dropped him.
All right.
I'm trying to think in a 12-team Roto League where you draft 23 roster spots.
that means 276 players are drafted, right?
So you got 277 is the reserve round.
I'm dropping him to 277 for now.
And I'm dropping him in points.
I think it's 254 is the number.
252.
So I'm going to drop him to 253.
And he should be a reserve round pick.
At this point, I mean, look, we might just be being over,
dramatic, right? Like, there's, they haven't said. We just saw this play out with Gary Cole, Chris,
and his season is not over yet. He's dealing with nerve inflammation in his elbow. So,
Gavin Williams. And, you know, like, yeah, but like I said, these aren't all, these aren't all
equal in terms of how they've been depicted. Yeah, the Guardians almost immediately came out and said
Gavin Williams is just sore. He's fine. I don't have a lot of reason to be optimistic. I've spent my
entire life as a Marlins fan.
Things tend to go wrong.
So,
with two notable exceptions, I guess.
Someone will annoyingly point that out.
And it's like, yes, they go very right.
It's been 21 years.
All right. Get over.
It has been 21 years.
Yeah.
Yeah, the Marlins Second World Series is almost old enough to drink.
For whatever this is worth, there were 22 drafts over at the NFBC on Sunday.
So the news was very clearly out by then.
There was still a minimum pick of 80 on Yuri Perez,
so that person missed the news.
There was a max pick of 290,
and the ADP was 163.
163 is too high.
It's too high.
I agree.
All right.
So in the reserve rounds,
if you're still,
if you're doing a draft that's upcoming,
we have a draft on Tuesday night.
One of our listener leagues,
we might not know what's going on with Yuri Perez.
And my guess is he probably will go outside of the top 200,
if that.
Max Meyer's name was mentioned as somebody who could fill in in the rotation.
They already have a bunch of injuries, and we know AJ Puck is there,
and Ryan Weathers looks like he's going to be in the rotation.
Any interest in Max Meyer as a late round sleeper until we know more?
I would think they're going to try at least two different names out before they get to Max Meyer.
They have Yanni Chorinos.
Remember that guy, former Ray's.
He was a major leaguer and a prospect.
And they like this guy Jorge Soriano.
as like a multi-inning reliever,
and they've mentioned him as someone who will likely get an opportunity
to pitch some bulk innings.
So I think those two would probably get a chance before Max Meyer.
Yeah, because Max Meyer's coming back from Tommy John surgery,
you feel like they'd want to slow play him at the start of the year.
Yeah, that's my expectation.
Yeah.
I would use a reserve round pick on Max Meyer.
Yeah, sure.
But probably later than the reserve round pick I use on Yuri Perez.
All right, let's slide over to another injury.
Josh Lowe will begin the season on the IL after being diagnosed with an oblique injury on Sunday.
And I just drafted him on my Tout Wars team on Saturday for $11.
So, yeah, I mean, that's fine.
11 bucks is fine.
Yeah, but I had other similar players in that with that skill set that, you know,
I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting Jaron for like $9.
You know what, guys.
You're complaining about all these injuries.
You're feeling like things, it was a pretty unlawful.
lucky weekend for you guys. Have you noticed what you're not wearing today on St. Patrick's Day?
Neither one of you are wearing green. And you know what? It's not St. Patrick's Day. You're getting pinched.
It's not St. Patrick's Day as we're recording. It's 20 minutes beyond St. Patrick's Day. You didn't
change just before this podcast. Yeah, I did. Yes, I did. Yeah, I did. No, you didn't.
Scott. If you're wearing a green shirt, Scott, that is not green. So I don't want to hear it. This is green.
That is not green. It is what color. What color was?
would you call it? Unless I'm colorblind. That looks gray from here. I don't know. Yeah.
It's not green. It's green. You know how like, uh, olive green. It like there, there are some
languages where like they don't have a specific word for green. They just have like shades of gray.
I might be making this up, but we'll just go with it. That's that's the shade of gray. Yeah,
I would say. It's great. Let's talk about Josh Lowe. He had, I think that yellow of the light might be
kind of like throwing things off. No excuse.
For the whole like blue black dress versus orange white dress.
You don't get to like get up on a shamrock and and criticize people for not wearing green.
When you're wearing, I specifically picked this green shirt out of my closet because it was St. Patrick's.
I'm just saying it's Kelly Green, right?
Like that's the that's the that has never been stipulated.
That has never been stipulated when they say wear green on St. Patrick's Day.
It's pretty clear.
It is the lowest effort, like the lowest possible bar to meet for social participation in something.
And I think this is the second year in a row for you guys.
You can't even do it.
Let me see.
Disappointing.
No, I don't got any green on me.
All right.
Can we talk about Josh Lowe?
He suffered an oblique injury here in mid-March.
So I think the hope, at least for me, someone who has him on his team, is that we can get him back in early May.
So how much are you thinking you're going to move?
down Josh low in the rankings, Scott White.
Do you think it's going to be as late as early May?
I feel like Obliques are usually just four to six weeks.
Yeah.
Kevin Cash called it very mild minor.
So it might not be that long.
I wasn't planning to move him down that much, to be honest.
I moved him down to around 150 in my overall rankings,
but I already had him lower than Scott for sure.
Yeah, I have him like 65.
So that would be huge to move down.
88 for me.
Still, 70 spots.
Pretty significant.
I would assume that he's just, like I said, I think he's going to miss a month.
So just kind of eyeing the ADP, which before this injury was 78.6 is the 21st outfielder off the board.
Maybe down to like the 125 range.
I don't know, like where Anthony Santander and Estuary Ruiz go in ADP, something like that.
Around Jordan Walker, that's like 116.
Yeah, I think that's probably reasonable and anywhere from like 120 to 150, I think would be a reasonable spot for me to move him.
I'm being a little more pessimistic just because how much is this connected to the previous injury, right?
Like is it on the same side?
It's a good question.
It's a good question.
It's something I will look up all your time.
Because obliques and hips are near one another.
They're neighbors in the body.
I think it presumably, I don't remember exactly what I read, but like something about in the buildup to returning from this.
Because, you know, when you're nursing one injury, you end up compensating elsewhere.
And this can happen.
And I already had Josh Lowe as a bust.
So that, for me, it's just kind of another reason I don't want to take Josh Lowe.
And so it's moving him down to a point where I mean, I assume in drafts with Scott, I'm definitely not going to have a chance.
to take him if I haven't 1.50.
I cannot for the life of me find which oblique it is.
Nobody, like all the tweets are just like, it's an oblique injury.
But it was left hip.
So if they're related, then perhaps it's something that can linger on a little bit more.
In the meantime, Rasta Resource has Richie Palacios penciled in as the strong side platoon in
right field.
Maybe Ahmed Rosario is his platoon mate.
Maybe Ahmed Rosario just becomes the starter in right field for the first month, whatever
it might be.
But any interest in either of those names?
I mean, this is pretty deep league stuff,
but Richie Palacios and Ahmed Rosario.
I've been snagging Ahmed Rosario in,
like I added him on waivers in some of my leagues for this week's runs,
and I've taken him in a couple of deeper spots.
So yeah, he's a, he went to drive-line guy,
and obviously has always had some talent.
So I think there's a chance Ahmed Rosario ends up being pretty useful
for fantasy while Josh Lowe's out.
I would add Jonathan Arrondo
over both of them.
All right.
Let's talk about T.J. Friedel now,
who has a fracture in his wrist
and will be reassessed in three to four weeks.
When do you guys expect Friedel back?
Because being reassessed in three to four weeks,
he's still going to have rehab after that.
Yeah.
Beginning of May.
Wrist injuries can be pretty bad.
I'm much more worried about T.J. Friedel's injury
than Josh Lowe's.
And you know what?
Life already found a way with the Noel V. Marte suspension.
Life needs to stop finding a way.
Life is found away all the way back home.
We get it, life.
Yeah.
T.J. Fidel.
E.
Okay. Reds can't have nice things, apparently.
I, you know, it's, I'm going to move T.J. Friedel down a lot because this seems like something that could drag on for a while.
You know, wrists.
And he already doesn't have a huge margin for error with his approach, right?
Like he was ringing every bit that he could out of his fairly limited skill set.
A fractured wrist can mess up a swing.
Yeah.
I think it's going to be more like mid late May that we see him again.
T.J. Friedel's ADP is 148.2 is the 35th outfielder off the board.
Are we thinking down to 200?
That's like Stephen Kwan, Kerry Carpenter.
Then down to 215 is Starling Marte, Daltz.
Varsho.
Where we've been moving
Tommy Edmund?
I'd probably move
to a similar spot
as him.
Yeah, I think
Edmund has been
consistently dropping
outside the top 200.
So it's probably
in the 200 to 225 range
if you're looking to still
draft T.J. Friedel later on
and stashing him on your I.L.
Obviously, this is big news
for Will Benson and Jake Freilly
who look like they will start
in center and right field
respectively, Scott.
Benson was someone
that you already liked
and this just makes him
that much more appealing.
I think he's going to start.
And I think the leash is obviously a lot longer with all of these injuries.
Yeah.
I mean,
I'm not saying they won't find somebody to spell Jake Frailey and Will Benson,
at least against some left-handers.
Well, it'll be Spencer Steer and Jonathan India.
Which of them can play center.
Yeah, not a center, but there's like Stuart Fairchild, right?
I mean, nobody we care about in fantasy.
so we'd like to see as little of him as possible.
But yeah, Spencer Stier's going to play a lot.
Jonathan India is going to play a lot.
And so I think my bust case for Spencer Stier, India was going too low to make a bust case, really, I felt like.
He was moving up, though.
The Spencer Stier bust case is kind of ruined.
There's still a chance I think he's not as good as last year,
but that he'll be so bad that it'll cost him playing time.
Not that I really thought he'd be so, but you know, you know what I'm saying,
that any slippage in production could cost him playing time.
That's out the window now.
Yeah, Jonathan India's ADP over the last week at NFC is 248.5.
That's up about 60 spots from where it was the week before.
And obviously, I think it's just he got back into games.
And I think Homer in each of his first two games back, I still have a lot of concerns about
Jonathan, India, you know, given the lingering nature of,
this foot injury given the fact that after he came back from the foot injury last season,
he wasn't particularly great.
But I think 250's fine given this news.
I think it gives John in India several more opportunities early on in the season to prove himself.
I think so too.
And I know they play different positions,
but how would you guys rank Benson, Fraley, and, you know what?
Let's throw Friddle in that mix too.
Benson, Fraley, Friedel, and Jonathan, India.
How do you guys rank them right now if you're heading into a draft?
Friol.
Oh, okay.
Interesting.
You'd still take Friddle first of that group.
Yeah.
I didn't think he was that far ahead of Benson when he was healthy.
Okay, interesting.
Okay.
One of us goes first.
I will go first.
Benson, India, Friedel, Fraley.
Was there somebody else?
That's it.
Okay.
Chris, your turn.
I have them all out.
outside of the top 200 now, but it would be
Friedel, India, Benson Freely.
All right, we do have some other
smaller injuries, we hope.
We'll get to that in just a second.

Let's take our first break when we return a few other injuries,
and we will reveal the listener league participants right after this.
All right, more injuries.
Bryce Harper has been held out of the lineup the past few days
with back stiffness and won't play on Monday.
He's expected to join the lineup later in the week.
manager Rob Thompson said there's zero concern for Harper's opening day availability.
And I look through Harper's career injuries.
There has been a lot of them.
And he's been day-to-day a few times throughout his career with a back injury,
but it doesn't look like he's ever actually went on the aisle because of it.
And another player that I won in South Wars over the weekend,
everyone knows that I love Bryce Harper.
So obviously I don't love to read this.
Any concerns?
Nothing really.
I do just want to ask a more general question about injury.
like this and like we've got this like weird liminal space between opening day and like real
opening day where like opening day is like the first game of the season is in what 20 36 hours whatever
it is from now something like that Wednesday at 6 a.m. I think and the but opening day is a week later and so
I'm kind of struggling to like keep those two things in my head and remember that like games are starting
in two days. But Philly's games aren't starting for nine days. And I'm, I'm struggling to,
like, balance that in my head. And so I think there might be some, like, overreacting over
injuries in the next couple of days. And we are not guilty of that at all on this podcast already
today. Yeah, the, the, but I'm just, I want to remind the audience that games are happening
this week, but we still have a significant,
ish amount of time until most teams have games.
And even Dodgers and Padres, like,
they're only playing two games.
I've struggled with the injury reactions
being,
tending to be very big,
even when the injury doesn't seem that big.
And I know during the season,
injuries are going to be even more frequent,
and our reactions to them probably won't be as big.
And so are they big now just because everybody still has a chance to pick their players?
And so, you know, it doesn't take much to scare somebody away from a player.
Or, you know, well, during the season, in season, the injury, you're stuck with that player anyway.
Yeah, I think that's part of it.
Yeah, you want to avoid guys who are currently injured.
I think that's reasonable.
But it is important to have that perspective that, like, it's not like the day you draft,
all those injuries are locked in and they're going to be no more.
There are going to be many more affecting every team in your league.
And so, you know, if you can get particularly a lower, like a, you know, obviously Yuri Perez,
that has the potential to be a season ender, but all these injuries that aren't season enders
or even costing a player a third of the season, you can get a good enough discount there in leagues
with an IL spot.
It's, you can't take them all on, I understand, but there, I think more often than,
not they're worth taking if the discount is there.
And I'll also just point out
there's, I've seen a lot of
oh my God, there's been so many injuries this
spring and like listing
all the names of the pitchers in particular
who have gotten hurt. This happens
every spring. Last year
Kyle Wright, Tyler Glass,
now Lance McCullors, Ricell Iglesias, Adam
Wainwright, Tristan McKenzie, Joe Musker,
Brian Bello, Garrett Whitlock, James Paxon,
Carlos Redon, Luis Severino, Justin Burlander.
We're all added to the
IL.
during spring training or as a result of injuries during spring training.
This is what happens every March.
March is a terrible, terrible month.
The latest on Aaron Judge, he hit off a T, he hit soft toss pitching,
and he hit off of a pitching machine on Sunday,
but has yet to return to games as he dealing with this abdominal discomfort.
Who would you guys rather draft right now, Bryce Harper or Aaron Judge?
I would rather draft Bryce Harper.
I would rather have Judge, but it's very close.
You know what? I do have Judge ahead.
Yeah, Judge.
Harper got hurt and Scott's moving them up.
Right.
I moved Judge down because of his injury
and I did not move Harper down because of his injury.
Yeah.
So that's why I reflexively said Harper.
But no, it's Judge.
Aaron Judge went for $40 in my Towers draft
while I selected Bryce Harper,
or I guess a bit on Bryce Harper for 42.
So a little bit more,
but you know,
I wanted Bryce Harper.
The latest on Garrett Cole,
Every day we have an update.
He said Saturday that he's dealing with nerve inflammation in his right elbow
and won't throw for three to four weeks,
which kind of makes me feel like early June, if everything works out.
Yeah, I think the absolute best case scenario would be like mid-May,
but probably more like June.
All right, and Danny Jansen will open the season on the aisle
after being diagnosed with a small fracture at the base of his right wrist.
And Scott, I know you already really liked Alejandro Kirk.
Is he moving up the rankings because of this injury?
I kind of liked Alejandro Kirk,
but I may really like him now.
Yeah.
He's the better defensive catcher.
I think he has more offensive potential
between the two Blue Jays catchers.
And I think there's a chance
this injury to Danny Jansen
could allow him to become entrenched
finally behind the plate.
His contact skills are,
I would say second to none among catchers,
but there's also keeper Ruiz.
So they're one in one A
in terms of making contact.
And Alejandro Kirk,
at least in the past,
not so much last year,
has shown the ability
ball much harder. So I think there's, you know, we were drafting him as a top 10 catcher last year.
And I think there's still a chance Kirk could live up to that potential. And I think even with
his Jansen injury, you don't even have to invest in him as a top 15 guys. So pretty good value.
Alejandro Kirk's ADP is 284.2. He's going 14 picks behind Luis Camp Usano. Do you think that group
of 17 catcher, Scott, now becomes 18 with Kirk? Or 19, if you include Henry Davis.
I think I'd still take Kirk after all of them.
It's a close call with Camp Usano, who was at the bottom.
You know what?
I might tear Kirk with Camp Usano at this point, but not with most of that group.
It's kind of its own separate sub-tier, I guess.
All right, it's that time.
Listener League participants, first off,
I do want to sincerely thank everybody for all of your submissions.
Not exaggerating, I went through hundreds of
of emails this weekend.
And when I say this weekend, I mean all of Sunday.
So my entire Sunday was dedicated to going through every single email.
So I promise you, if you sent in an email with a submission, I saw it this weekend.
So I do-
And that is incredible.
I want to applaud you for that because I don't think anybody submitted it trusting for
sure that you'd see it.
I don't know about you.
It's been a long time since I've applied for a job, thankfully.
But I've never applied for a job assuming the application would actually be seen.
I figured there was some element of luck just in terms of it being pulled off the stack, you know?
And so I would imagine for something like this, less serious than hiring somebody for a job.
It's very serious, Scott. Come on.
The fact you went through all, every single one of them is, you deserve applause for that.
So good on you.
Thank you.
And I always put a lot of pressure on myself too when choosing these because I see how much work and creativity and thoughtfulness that people send in.
And again, it's incredible.
So I just want to thank everyone, seriously, like best listeners in the world, you are all amazing.
Also, I apologize if I mess up your name because I'm sure I will mess up a few names throughout this process.
So without further ado, our 12 team head-to-head points league, which will draft this Tuesday.
If you're listening to the podcast, it'll be tomorrow, March 19th at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
Joining Scott, Chris and me will be.
First up, Aaron Marcus, Jeff Rice, Matt,
Burial, Burial?
I'm sorry.
Nathan McCullough.
Craig Gainier.
Penn Elletson.
Zach Hearnowski.
I was just a Hernowski?
Hernowski?
Zach Hernowski.
That's what it looks like to me.
Ethan Kearns.
Kobe Koretz or Koretz.
And a couple quick notes on these names.
So that's one league is down.
To Penn Ellison, he sent in a cameo from Tino Martinez,
which was amazing because Tino Martinez and Bernie Williams
were like my two favorite Yankees growing up.
If Tino Martinez once in the league
or to be on this podcast, we will make that happen.
So make sure you let Tino Martinez know if you,
I don't know, have some kind of hookup with him or whatever,
if you ever get to talk to him.
Also, we're going to play some songs throughout this podcast
because they were so awesome.
I've got three songs that I'll play again throughout this
and we'll get to those, you know, a little bit later on.
Next, the For the People 16 team,
Head to Head to Head Category Draft, which will be next Tuesday evening, March 26th.
We have 13 spots available and here goes.
Eric Myers, Stephen Martin, Bob Weber and his son Jackson.
They will be teaming up together.
Benji Aflalo, Joey Garibaldi, Brian O'Donnell, G. Chris Mal,
Christopher Himerman, David Coffey, Toby Santos, Evan Malter,
and a few firsts, these last submissions.
Trevor House emailed in and nominated his brother,
though he didn't say what his brother's name was.
So, surprise to Trevor Howard's brother.
House's brother, you will be in the league.
And we also got two really great crossword puzzles,
and I couldn't choose between the two.
So here's the catch.
I am offering that you two can team up together.
In the draft, Omar Fittal.
All right, hold on.
Can I...
Fitt two?
I'll sacrifice my spot for one of these guys.
You want to, I mean you can do the team together.
Yeah, like you and I can team up.
Let's let both these people have their own team.
I thought it would have been pretty fun for them to team.
Like, just like strangers teaming up together.
But all right, let's do that.
Chris, you and me will be together.
And Omar Fetow and Dylan Steinfeld.
You will each have your own team.
Two great crossword puzzles.
If anybody wants to fill those out or if you're interested in getting them,
email me, Fantasy, frank.
My name is not.
Yeah.
Frank.
dot stampful at paramount.com. And if you heard your name, also email me, because this is kind of a
quick turnaround, so we got to make things happen. But if I don't hear from you on Monday morning,
then I'll reach out and we'll make this happen. So congrats to everybody. Again, really thoughtful,
creative submissions. They were awesome. I did want to mention Stephen Martin wrote and recorded
a rendition of Losing My Religion by REM, which Chris sang, and we'll play that a little bit later
on. But the first song I did want to play is called FBT, and it's a rendition of TNT by ACDC. That was a lot of
letters in a row. But I seriously might use this for our Sunday recordings. Like Sunday live
streams, I might just open this, like the new Kokomo Friday, the new, I don't know, FBT Sunday,
because this song is amazing, and here it is.
because it's
F. B.T.
On Sunday night.
Tremendous stuff.
That was amazing.
Amazing.
Again, that was done by,
I should probably point out
who that was done by Matt.
Matt Boreal or Matt Boreal.
And it was awesome.
So I might seriously open up
every Sunday live stream
or Monday podcast with the song
because it was so cool.
We'll play some other songs.
Let's get back into the news and notes
again. Congrats to those who are in the league.
Lots of Rangers news this weekend.
Rangers GM, Chris Young said
Wyatt Langford has done everything he can to make the Rangers opening day roster,
but has not actually said he's on the opening day roster yet.
51 NFBC drafts this weekend.
Langford's ADP was 88.4, right behind Brian Reynolds, right ahead of Sayas Suzuki.
He went for $21 in my Tout War's draft Saturday.
What do we think?
How much further can he go if they announce him on the opening day roster?
Top 60 pick, I think.
that's i mean you look at prospects over the last decade like
vlad guerrero is the only one who ended up i mean obviously there might have been guys
who got there because their last weekend got them there but i think
glad guerrero junior is the only one to be a top 60 pick in overall api p you know what
that sounds exactly right frank where he's going i i have white langford ranked ahead of
Brian Reynolds and Spencer Stewart,
I'm sorry,
Brian Reynolds and Saya Suzuki.
So he's in between.
Yep.
I have him ranked right ahead of them.
And I've had him ranked there
for a very long time,
for what it's worth.
So I've been on the,
I guess I started out
on the more optimistic end
and everybody's kind of caught up to me
and I think there's a chance
everybody surpasses me here.
If he is announced,
because I don't think I want to move him up
anymore in my rankings.
That's already a top 25 outfielder, you know?
So you, what's the highest you guys are willing to pay on him?
I think I asked you that last week.
I mean, I haven't drafted him yet and I probably want to at some point.
So maybe I run it out of drafts.
Yeah, maybe I push it up into the 80s, but that probably won't be enough.
I don't know.
I have him 77th overall.
so even though I'm right on in my outfielder,
I may just have outfielders pulled up in general.
I don't know.
Okay.
The Rangers manager, Bruce Bochie,
indicated that Jose LeClerc has a, quote,
strong possibility of beginning the season
as the team's primary closer,
which, Scott, you have been on.
A lot of shares of LeClerc, loving that.
Yeah, could definitely turn out to be good for him.
And Max Scher has been cleared for baseball activities.
June remains the target to return.
he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in mid-December.
Does this make you more optimistic about Scherzer or is just part of the timeline?
I've been assuming this kind of timeline for, like I think the June timeline became clear a couple weeks ago.
And that's mostly what I've been assuming since then.
Would you rather take a shot on Scher or Yuri Perez right now late in drafts?
Scher.
Where do I actually have Scher rank?
Because I'm inclined to say Scherzer.
I have Scherzer ranked 267th, which was about the point where we talked about moving Gary Perez.
So that makes sense.
Yeah.
All right.
Non-Rangers news, Sunny Gray won't be an option for opening day, but may not require a stint on the IL.
He's dealing with a right hamstring string.
Yeah.
The last I saw was like not the opening series, but maybe as soon as the next one.
Tyler O'Neill was scratch Friday due to this recurring left calf tightness.
Alex Cora said he's hopeful O'Neill will.
return to the lineup on Tuesday.
Do you guys still want to use a late round pick on Tyler O'Neill, or are you kind of scared
off with this calf injury?
Five outfielder league?
Yeah, absolutely.
He's still cheap enough.
All right.
It looks like Robert Stevenson will start the season on the IL because of the shoulder
injury he's dealing with, and that means more of a leash for Carlos Estevez as the
Angels Closer.
Cubs manager, Craig Counsel, isn't ready to hand out to find roles for Adbert
Alzely or any other member of their bowl.
Just a jerk move for our guy, Alzalai.
Like, Craig counsel comes in.
He's rocking the bow right away.
Alzalai earned it last year, all right?
Like, why is he doing this?
I mean, I understand.
Yoel Paiamps earned being the next guy up in the Brewers rotate bullpen
and everybody's throwing him aside, casting him off.
You know, that's not the same as already having the job as being the
resumed next in mind.
See, now he's waffling.
Now he's waffling.
How would you guys rank Alzalai,
Carlos Estevez, and Jose LeClerc?
I still think I want Alzalai most of all of them.
I wonder how much LeClerc is going to move up
because I was pretty shocked at how lady was going
for all of draft prep season.
I understand there was this kernel of doubt that was introduced,
but it seemed like even before that was introduced,
LeClerc was going very late.
So we'll see if other people start elevating them past Alzalai.
And LeClark ahead of Estevez for you, Scott?
Oh, yeah, definitely.
Estevez is distant third.
Okay.
Jackson Merrill will be the Padres opening day starter in center field.
So all good there.
Cardinals manager, Ali Marmol said Saturday that Victor Scott, Dylan Carlson,
and Michael Siani are still competing for the starting center field job.
And Chris, we were talking beforehand.
You said Victor Scott is going to make you a millionaire.
Well, probably not a millionaire, but I did.
I dropped a little, a little cash on plus 6,000, Victor Scott to lead the majors and stolen bases.
He had 94 and 134 games with like a, it was like an 88% success rate last season in the minors.
Everybody runs in the minors, but let's go.
Yeah, he might just be the best base dealer in baseball when he gets called up.
All right. Jose Urquitie was removed from his.
star on Saturday due to discomfort in his right elbow.
It looks like Ronel Blanco would be the next man up,
although the Astros have recently been linked to Blake Snell.
So that could be interesting and certainly could make some sense for them.
Michael A. Taylor signed a one-year $4 million deal with the Pirates on Friday.
He's expected to be the team starting center feeler with Jack Swinsky sliding over to right.
Last year, he hit 21 homers with 13 steals, albeit with a 220 batting average.
So we're talking deeper.
outfielder, probably 15 team leagues.
I mean, any interest in Michael Taylor
as a reserve pick or something like that?
Not a lot of interest,
but you get in the league deep enough
that everybody who's playing regularly matters,
then sure, Michael Taylor matters too.
I think maybe the most interesting angle
as far as fantasy is concerned with this
is that doesn't leave a potential opening
in the outfield for Henry Davis
to play there more than occasionally,
like maybe Jack Swinsky sitting against left.
Tanders or whatever, but it sounds like the pirates are pretty sold on him as they're starting
catcher at this point. Obviously, Yasmani Grondahl's been hurt, planter fichitis, but this kind
of reinforces that idea, I think, that Henry Davis is just, I'm not saying he'll never
appear in the outfield, but he's mainly going to catch. Don't screw this up, pirates. You've
never screwed anything up before. It sounds like Will Warren, Clayton Beater, Louise Heel,
that's Luis G-I-L and Cody Poteet are the Yankees' top options to fill in for Garikol while he's out.
Luis Heel has struck out everyone this spring.
I don't know if it's going to be right away, but he's a name to throw on the scout team and let's see where it goes.
Will Warren does have some prospect appeal too, so.
He was pretty bad today, I believe.
So that might give Heel the edge now.
What a turn for Heal.
They optioned him at the start of March.
Now he's probably going to be their fifth.
starter.
throws almost triple digits.
Were you doing a bit?
There was a pun in there.
Yeah, I thought for sure.
Just making sure.
Jordan Wicks appears to be the
favorite for the Cubs' fifth starter job to start
the year. Any interest in deeper leagues?
I missed the name.
Jordan Wicks.
Ah, gosh.
His strikeout numbers have been really bad.
Not that interested, to be honest.
Okay. Chris, I'm sorry to continue on with the bad news.
bad news.
Tyler Soderstrom was optioned to AAA and he's had a really rough spring.
Yeah, that's not great.
Not great for him.
It's not great.
Orlando Arcia was hit by a pitch on his left hand on Sunday and thankfully X-rays came back negative.
So we'll see what happens there.
Nando and I just drafted him to be our starting shortstop in a Scorsi league, a league that we're in together, Scott.
So, yay, let's go Orlando.
I'm glad you guys, well, you and Nando in that league and you and Chris and the other.
I don't work well with others.
so I'm glad I get to keep my own team.
Nando and I, it's not that we don't work well together.
We don't work at all.
It's just we didn't, like I threw a bunch of names in the queue.
Neither of us checked back.
And then I woke up on Sunday and I realized, oh, crap, we drafted Orlando Arcia.
That wasn't really part of the plan.
But whatever, we needed a short time.
Adam and Azer, Adam and Azer and I used to share a team in the For the People
podcast league when Heath Cummings first introduced it to us.
and it never went well.
Like Adam and I were both pretty good fantasy baseball players, I think.
But when we shared a team, it didn't work.
It just didn't work.
I don't play well with others.
I kind of feel like...
You're a control freak.
Maybe that's what it is.
Maybe that will do.
Scott and Chris could share a team in the four of the people league.
That would be a disaster for everyone.
Yes, yes.
Let's see that.
No, I don't want to do that.
That's a terrible idea.
I was just sell, like, why are you being mean now?
Not being mean.
I was just saying,
I was relieved.
I didn't have to share a team.
And you're like, I'm going to make you share a team now.
He would just make for great content, Scott.
The content machine is always turning.
I have to defend my title.
Come on.
That's fair.
Apparently Tommy Fam and the Padres have been in talks about a one-year deal.
Fan was actually really solid last year when I looked into the numbers.
I didn't realize how good he was.
256, 16 homers, 22 steals.
That'll play in a five outfield or league.
So, I mean, if this happens, I think Tommy Pham would start in a corner infields,
a corner outfield spot for the Padres.
I assume so
Yeah
I mean it seemed like it was in the making
For weeks now
Yeah
All right Chris we got some good news for you
Cody Bradford will be in the
The Rangers rotation
And he is a deep
Deep League spark
For those in points leagues
Speaking of Chris
Let's play that recording
Chris did the recording
You can lay it out
I didn't realize
That he sent a recording
I thought he just sent the lyrics
Oh he also sang it yeah
Yeah
So I feel bad that I, that I usurped Stevens work here.
But my, my wife was out of town two weeks ago.
And that was my only opportunity to record song vocals.
I was just imagining you in your house alone, just singing passionately to this.
Oh, I, I hope that my neighbors could hear it because that would be very funny.
And it's only a portion of a song.
I can't play the entire song.
but I assume...
I did the whole song.
Yeah, I assume you'll tweet out the full song
or something, Chris.
You should, because it's really good.
Anywho, here we go.
This is Losing My Redraft League,
a rendition of Losing My Religion
by R.E.M.,
sung by our own Chris Towers.
But that was just a dream.
That was just a dream.
That's Reese in the corner.
That's Lee in the first round.
Lose.
using my redraft league praying for a B plus trade and I don't know if I can do it
oh no I've paid too much I haven't paid enough I thought that I heard you laughing
at all my late roughlings it
I thought I had Kodi
But that was just a dream
Kodi, Ty,
Bryce, Bride
That was just a dream
From the song right
It's it, Breen
Just a dream
Bream
Great job, Chris.
Love it.
Thanks, thanks.
Great lyrics from Stephen Martin,
great rendition there from Chris.
Let's take our final...
I can tell you really put your heart into it.
That's why I had to
I went until my wife left the apartment.
Yeah.
We'll take our final break when we return.
We'll quickly recap my Tout Wars draft from this weekend,
and we will do that right after this.
All right, let's recap my Tout Wars draft from this weekend.
For those watching us live on YouTube,
I'll pull up our very interactive draft board here,
so everyone can follow along.
As always, a big thanks to those who make Tout Wars possible every year.
Peter Croydzer, Todd Zola, Jeff Erickson, Brian Walton, and Ron Chandler.
It's always a great time to get together,
and do a live draft together, a live auction,
and then hang out, grab a couple beers after.
So it's just always a fun weekend.
So happy to do it and happy it's still going on.
So this was a 15-team mixed roto salary cap draft,
also known as an auction.
$260 budget with OBP instead of batting average.
And I learned throughout this process,
that makes things a lot harder to plan for.
There are not a lot of middle infielers that provide OBP.
That was one of the hardest things for me to find.
And you'll figure out why.
a second. So I wound up spending $174 on my hitting, $86 on my pitching. That is a 67, 37% split.
And Chris, you will be proud to know that I deviated from the plan a lot during this draft.
I was tilting badly. So, yes, I went in with a plan. I had all my players and things did not go according
to plan. I don't think any of my auction plans really came to fruition this year. It was, it was, yeah,
I don't know if I was just bad at projecting what others were going to do,
but apparently that happened to you in this one too.
Yes, and it's especially hard to, again, try and project what players are going to go for in an OBP league.
It's tougher because NFBC has auctions so you can look at average auction values,
but those are batting average drafts.
So like everything kind of changes in OBP.
So going in, I wanted a big OBP first baseman, one of Bryce Harper, Freeman, or Matt Olson,
and I wanted a 30-30 outfielder, one of Julio.
Rodriguez, Kyle Tucker, or Fernando Tatis.
I did get Bryce Harper.
I did not get one of the outfielders.
They got pushed into like the mid-40s.
And in an OBP Lee, I was like,
ah, don't really think I want to do that.
So instead I pivoted to Trey Turner,
who I think could go 25, 25,
and then I wound up with Nolan Jones as my first outfielder.
Somebody I think could go 2020.
And frankly, I think he's a little bit better in OBP anyway.
So here's the offense.
Here's how it worked out.
I got Jonah Heim for $9, not part of the plan.
Renee Pinto for $1.
You'll find out why in a second.
Bryce Harper for 42.
Jake Burger for 7.
Anthony Rizzo for 5.
Bryson Stott for 9.
Trey Turner for 34.
Luis Arise for $9.
What is going on?
And in my outfield, I got Nolan Jones for 21,
Seya Suzuki for 15.
Josh Lowe for 11.
Sadness.
Henry Davis for $8.
So hopefully he's my catcher 2 coming soon.
Brandon Marsh for $2,
who actually is a lot better in OBP leagues.
and Junior Cameraro for a buck.
I got Jackson Merrill, Davis Schneider, and Mitch Hanninger in the reserves.
And I have four Phillies hitters on my team.
Not part of the plan.
That's way too many players on one team.
I missed out on Will Benson, who I threw out in the end game for two bucks.
Someone went three last second.
I was so sad.
So instead, that's how I wound up with Brandon Marsh.
What do you guys' thoughts?
On the offense.
When did Henry Davis get nominated?
He got nominated.
before the first break, but a pretty good amount into the draft.
So I wanted one of Wilson Catreras or Sean Murphy as my first catcher for like $12 to $14.
They both went from like 15 or 16.
So I didn't want to spend that much.
So instead I wound up with Jonah Heim as my first catcher.
And then I figured, all right, well, I didn't spend as much on my catcher one.
So let me get Henry Davis as my catcher too.
Yeah.
And Henry Davis, in theory, is going to be even better in an OBP.
league. He was certainly good at getting on base in the minors. So I think that could work out.
And this is 15 teams, right? 15 teams, yep. I'm amazed, given that this happened this past week.
And we already knew Jackson Merrill was on the opening day roster. And you still got him in the
reserve round in a 15 team league. I forgot about him. And then once we got to the reserves, I thought,
I think I was picking seventh or eighth.
I said, oh, for sure, someone's going to realize Jackson Merrill's there.
No one took him.
Because I think at the long run, Jackson Merrill's going to be your fifth outfielder rather than
Brandon Marshall.
He's got to pick up eligibility there.
Yeah.
Well, I need him to fill in for Josh Lowe, who's not heard.
So that sucks.
But yeah, I mean, that's what?
345 players are picked in the auction portion of the draft, right?
Way too much math for me to do on the fly.
Well, whatever the number is.
Jackson Merrill is.
His ADP over the last week is 303.
That's including drafts before he was announced on the opening day roster,
although I think we all assumed he was going to be on there anyway.
Yeah, that's a really nice value.
For me, that's where I personally rank him now.
So I would not have.
Where did you say, Scott?
You got cut off for a second.
Where do you rank him?
250th.
Okay.
Yeah.
So I feel pretty good about getting him in the reserves.
Davis Schneider,
someone who I think, again, could be better an OBP.
maybe it's 20 plus home runs.
Mitt Hanigers had a really good spring.
He looks healthy so far.
These are all players on your bench, you're saying?
Yeah, those are my reserve hitter.
Oh, great.
I mean, Schneider theoretically is going to be eligible in the outfield, too.
I kind of just think they should play him at second base, but they seem like they're more interested in making him a super utility guy.
They being the Blue Jays, for those who don't know what team Davis Schneider plays for.
Yeah, and he should be good for OBP.
I mean, your infield is.
Great.
Louisa Rise
loses some value
in an OBP League, right?
Because so much of his OBP
comes from batting average.
So like just the,
it's still a good OBP,
but it's,
it's,
the margin is less.
Let me talk through the,
did you just,
yeah, did you feel,
did you feel backed into it?
A little bit because I wanted
Edward Julian as my middle infielder.
I wanted a higher OBP
middle infielder
because I knew that I had interest
in getting
Jake Berger. So I kind of wanted to balance that. Burger's a bad OBP player. I'll be lucky if he gives me
a 300 OBP. So I wanted a good middle infield OBP guy. So Julianne went for 11. I wanted to get him for
like 8 to 10. So that didn't work out. And then Louisa Rice was thrown out right after. And I just
started, I'm like, well, his OBP is going to be really good. And so yeah, it was just like slow playing.
I would bid five. Someone else would go down six, seven, eight, eight.
And then it got up to nine.
And then a few picks after that, Scott, you are going to be so upset with me.
Jackson Holiday went for five bucks.
And I was like, oh, gosh.
I felt so terrible.
He should be really good in OVP if he hits.
We got to the first break.
And I went up to Brent Hershey because we were the two that were bidding on Louisa Rice.
I was like, dude, I would infinitely rather have Jackson Holiday for $5 than Luis
arise for nine.
and I hate myself for it.
So that's how I felt.
Well, it happens.
It's almost impossible to get through a whole auction or salary cap draft
without having at least one of those regrets.
I could have gotten this guy I like more for less than this guy I got for this guy I got instead.
Yeah, I don't know.
I think I think you look good for a 15 team.
Did you even go through the people?
pitching staff yet? Because the pitching staff, it looks...
No, just offense so far.
But yeah, let's... Particularly strong.
Let's read off the pitching. And this actually went
entirely according to plan.
Like, to a T. I could send you guys
my notes beforehand. This is exactly what I wanted to do.
I got Luis Castillo for $28.
Ricell Iglesias for 14. Justin
Steele for 12. U. Darvish for 10. Chris
Bassett for 7. Justin Verlander for 3.
Carlos Estevez for 5.
Aaron Savali for six, and I got
Devin Williams for a buck. Tout Wars
unlimited IL spots.
Right. That's... I knew going in,
I wanted an IL stash pitcher,
whether it was Senga, Scherzerzer,
I really wanted Walker Bueller. I got up to five bucks,
someone went six. But I got Verlander for three.
Yeah, I mean, Verlander for three, I feel like
is a steel because it might only be like
two weeks that you're waiting on Justin Verlander.
It's one of those injury overreactions
that I was talking about.
that he would only go for three,
is particularly in a league
that gives you all that IL space.
If this was an NFBC league with no IL space,
I could understand a little more.
But yeah,
we're not expecting to wait long for Verlander.
It's,
I have him as a $9 player, for instance,
and that's geared for 12 team leagues,
and you got them for three in this 15 team league.
There is kind of a hidden complication in auctions specifically,
that I don't feel like we talk about much,
you can only purchase nine pitchers,
starters or relievers.
You can only purchase a total of nine.
And I find at that position more than any of the others,
I feel confined by that.
Like, I end up too,
often it feels like I fill up all nine of those spots
before we've run out of pitchers.
I would like to occupy a spot on my roster.
And then you watch all your sleepers go off the board.
Right.
So I think it's,
I think in that scenario,
you can only really justify taking one injured pitcher in the,
at least in the auction portion.
If some make it to the reserve rounds, fine.
You could take more.
But that,
that is a bit of a complication that may be,
may have driven the price of Verlander down a bit,
but more than anything,
I just think it's,
I just think it's an overreaction.
And you know what's a good point,
Scott,
some of the quirks within an auction,
getting Henry Davis in an outfield spot
kind of made things a little bit tougher throughout
because I can't put him in my catcher spot yet.
So I had to spend $1 on a bad catcher
who I knew I was going to probably drop a couple of weeks into the season.
So it's actually like I kind of spent $9 on Henry Davis instead of eight.
But it also disallowed me the opportunity to get another outfielder on my team
that I might have liked.
So it does cause.
some complications within the draft, specifically with Henry Davis.
The, yeah, the pitching plan, this is exactly what I wanted to do.
If you're pitching, if you're drafting later in the first round, and, you know, typically
I want to get Bryce Harper, you got to draft him in like, whatever, early second round.
Luis Castillo doesn't typically fall to the end of the third round.
So again, this is kind of what I like about doing a salary cap or an auction draft,
is that you're allowed to get players that might not be afforded to you in ADP and
a snake draft. So that's why I was happy to, I wanted one of Louise Castillo or Zach Wheeler,
because I like both of those guys. I haven't drafted them anywhere yet. And so I knew going in,
I was going to get one of those. These pitching prices are surprising to me, because my experience
drafting in 15 team leagues this year, starting pitchers get pushed up. And I'm looking at,
you got Chris Bassett for $7. Like, I feel like he should go for closer to 15. Yep. I think I had
him as like a $12 or $13 player on my sheet. I have him as a $12.
dollar player again for 12 team and you got him for seven
Justin Steele
I have him you got him for
12 for 12
and I have Justin Steele
listed as a $15 player
again in 12 teams where I feel like I've been
caught off guard in drafting
in Roto leagues deeper 15 team
roto leagues and how much earlier
starting pitchers go than where I have him
so I'm a bit confused what happened
at starting pitcher here that you were able to
get such quality at
at such what looks to me to be discounts.
I think the mid-tier to the end game
were a lot of discounts
because the draft started off hot.
I mean, these, like, first round players,
like, Mookie Betts went for $48.
Kyle Tucker went for $48.
Akuna went for $61.
Like, the draft started off hot.
Like, people were spending on big names.
And so as a result, we saw a lot of, like,
you know, fourth and fifth outfielders
went for way too cheap in my estimation.
later on. But I already filled some spots. And in pictures, obviously. Yeah. I wonder if part of that,
you know, sometimes people just get especially eager for the high-end types and the bin and gets
a little out of control. We see that in our own in-house ones all the time. But I wonder if
there was an element two of this is an OBP league. And it's, there are fewer standout hitters
who also give you a big advantage in OBP, you know, because like that, that takes Bobby Witt out.
Sort of takes Julio Rodriguez out.
And there's even more.
So, like, what did those two go for?
What are Witt in mid-40s, she said.
Bobby Witt went for 45, and Julio went for 43.
43?
Pretty good.
What did, like, Matt Olson go for?
I got to ask since he spent 42 on Harper.
Yeah, he was a good buy relative to Harper.
He went for 39, 39.
the steel of the drought,
I mean,
like the early round players,
Corby and Carroll went for 37.
Oh,
really,
because he's really,
he gets lumped in with
Bobby Witt and Julio Rodriguez,
but Corby and Carroll was like
362 OBP last year.
And I think he has more,
I think he has upside from there too
because he walked a ton in the minors.
That was one of the best buys early on.
Yeah,
absolutely.
I mean,
you guys know I feel about Carol.
So I wasn't,
I wasn't going to be in,
but maybe I'll regret it.
Who knows?
It probably should have been, yeah.
Yeah, so the pitching plan was, it actually,
it went exactly how I wanted it to.
On the bench, I should mention,
I did wind up with James Paxton.
So hopefully he's healthy enough for the first month
until I get Justin Verlander back.
I drafted Michael Kopeck, future White Sox closer.
Probably, I'd say at this point, yeah, probably.
And I got Jared Jones, who looked great again this weekend.
You did end up taking two injured pitcher,
as I overlooked that you took Devin Williams
and Justin Verlander in the auction portion.
So I guess I worry about strikeouts a little.
Of course, I worry about strikeouts at pitcher
because Castillo should be a huge source of them, Luis Castillo.
And Steele and Bassett should give you, you know, 175 to 1805.
They'll volume their way there.
Yeah, I mean, injury potential, of course.
And, you know, I'm higher on...
Maybe Darvish could be that,
but I have concerns about Darvish even being a viable option all season long.
I'm not saying he was a bad buy at $10, but I'm just wondering what your recourse is
if it doesn't go right with him.
But it's hard to get everything.
So I think all in all, it looks like a pretty well-balanced team.
You got some good speed in your lineup between Stott and Trey Turner.
and Nolan Jones and Josh Lowe, depending how long he's out,
you know, there's going to be smaller contributions from like Bryce Harper
and say a Suzuki, hopefully.
How many of the Suzuki have last year?
I think nine, eight or nine.
Yeah, he can get double digits.
Yeah.
And Marsh, you know, Brandon Marsh, James Paxton eventually should give you some.
So, yeah.
James Paxton's going to give me steal, Scott?
I looked at the wrong name on your business.
Jackson Merrill is what I meant to say.
Yeah.
James Pags are not giving you steals.
All right, so we'll see.
I mean, obviously, you know, losing out on Josh Lowe.
Hopefully Bryce Harper is good to go.
But I think it went well, but you never know.
I mean, so many things are going to change
throughout the course of the season.
But I tweeted out the link.
If anyone wants to go check out the draft results,
you can find those on Twitter at Rodo underscore Frank.
We're going to end with one more song.
Big, beefy baseball boys.
This was like one of the first ones we got, too.
this person was like sitting on this apparently because they turned it around real quick.
Yes. And this person being Jeff Rice, who did a great job, it's a rendition of Weed and Start the Fire
So it's going to be fun. But we're going to like let it take us out. So I'm going to wrap up and I mean, it's kind of a throwback, right? We used to have a Weed and Start the Fire theme song. So this is kind of taking us back. Yeah, before I was here. So there we're bringing it back. We're going to wrap there for Scott and Chris. I am Frank. Thanks as always for tuning into fantasy baseball.
