Now here's Frank Scott and Chris.
Welcome in to an emergency edition of Fantasy Baseball today on Thursday, January 22nd.
I am Frank Stample joined by Chris Towers.
And shout out to my wrestling fans.
You know where that sound drop is from.
We just had a big trade in baseball.
Mackenzie Gore is headed to the Texas Rangers in exchange for one, two, three, four, five prospects.
Gavin Feene, Devin Fitzgerald, Alejandro Rosario, Abamelik Ortiz,
and Jeremy Cabrera.
This is a massive hall for McKenzie Gore,
who turns 27 in February,
has two years left of control.
But we've said this for a while now, Chris.
We know Gore has filthy stuff.
We've seen glimpses of stardom.
He keeps fading hard in the second halfs of seasons.
Change of scenery.
Can the Rangers finally get him to that next level?
What do you think?
I'm a believer.
I'm a real believer in McKenzie Gore.
I know it's been frustrating over the course of the last couple of years.
The whip especially is just untenably high, 135, 142, 140 the past three seasons.
You could live with a 390, 417-ish ERA and a bunch of strikeouts.
It's the whip that kills you.
Well, now it's going to a much better situation.
The home ballpark is one of the best in baseball for pitchers.
Globly Field has been the second best pitchers park in baseball over the past three seasons,
according to baseball savants, that cast park factors, only ahead of Seattle.
That's Seattle's way better, so let's not, let's not act like this is a huge upgrade, but it's an upgrade there.
And then it should be an upgrade defensively because the Nationals were one of the worst defensive teams in baseball.
The Rangers were arguably the best last season.
Now, the boss Marcus Simian, they're replacing him with Josh Smith.
You know, I think that's probably a downgrade, although I don't know, you got a guy who can handle shortstop playing second base now.
So that might work.
I think this is about as good of a landing spot as you could have hoped for if you are a McKenzie Gore believer.
He gives up a lot of hits.
325 Babbat last season, 340 the year before.
I think those have to go down just based on the surrounding park or the surrounding factors.
The ballpark that he's going to be in drops batting average more than any ballpark in baseball, except for Seattle.
It boosts strikeouts a little bit.
It should be a much improved defense.
And the thing I love about McKenzie Gore is just the stuff is so good.
And it's just a question of being a little more consistent with his command, especially, avoiding these big blowups.
and I think everything about this move should help
and just I think just the change of scenery
even if it wasn't a significantly better team context
which it should be
I think I would have faith in McKenzie Gore
being better away from Washington
just by dint of him needing a different voice in his ears
and he's going to get that now
he's got five pitches
that he threw at least 5% of the time last season
all of them
had an above average swinging strike rate, whiff rate,
whatever version of that stat you want to use,
he has five above average swing and miss pitches.
I'm going to bet on that guy.
I'm going to keep betting on that guy,
and hopefully, eventually it works out for me.
He just goes through these fits and these stages
where he just kind of gets the yips, you know,
and just like forgets how to throw strikes
or just cannot command his pitches.
I mean, we've seen this the past couple of times.
years. The first half last season, it looked like the breakout was on, and he was performing
like a top 24 starting pitcher in fantasy. In that first half, a 302 ERA, 120 whip. I think that's
always going to be high for him, but almost 11.3K per 9 in that first half last year. And just a
stark difference in the second half, 675 ERA. The whip went up to 170, 8.6K per 9, 5.3 walks
per nine. It's just completely untenable in the second half of last season. And we've seen that for a couple
of years now too. It gets huge extension on his fastball. You mentioned the whiff rates on all of his pitches.
Last season, the Rangers were first in defensive run saved. The nationals were 27. So something's got to
give. I don't know that the walks are ever going to be much better for McKenzie Gore, but in his career,
324 Babbip and an 8-84 hits per 9.
I have to imagine with some better defense behind you,
that's just going to be better for McKenzie Gore.
So I am talking myself into this as well,
and it's a very dangerous place to live with McKenzie Gore,
backing McKenzie Gore,
but man, we've said this for so long.
Just change the scenery, get him to a team that frankly knows what they're doing.
The nationals are probably, before this new regime takes over,
I don't want to bury them.
They haven't done anything yet.
But the previous regime,
they were not good at getting the most out of their pitchers.
They were not good at pitching development.
I mean,
that is just,
you look at the pictures that they have.
It's just true.
I mean, that is a factual statement.
And obviously, the Rangers,
better ballpark, better organization.
And, you know, DeGrom was great last year.
I mean, DeGrom is DeGrom.
But, like, they made tweaks.
Less velocity for him and Avaldi.
Avaldi had an amazing season as well.
So I think the Rangers have a pretty good idea.
what they're doing.
Jack Leiter got better
in the second half too.
You look at Jack Leiter
and Kamar Rocker.
They haven't figured it out yet.
Yeah.
But they have both been
willing and able to make tweaks
based on the team's suggestion.
Lighter expanded his arsenal
in a big way last year.
I believe it was a sinker
and a change-up that he added.
Rocker has experimented
with a ton of different breaking ball looks.
I think he added a cutter last year.
The Rangers generally seem to know
what they're doing.
When it comes to pitchers, they put their pitchers in good spots.
I just think it's a bet on talent in McKenzie Gore's case,
and it's a bet on a guy moving from arguably the, let's not say the worst,
because the Rockies exist, the second worst situation in baseball for a pitcher
to seemingly one of the best.
I think that is a bet worth making.
His ADP has been around 200.
I'm the McKenzie Gore guy, I guess, because I have him ranked around 155th.
I would guess he moves closer to where I have him ranked after this trade.
Let's take a look.
Yeah, you mentioned the ADP in January is 205.
He's going just behind Shane Baas, Kate Horton.
I think he'll move up ahead of those names.
How high can it get?
I see, like, Imanaga at 177, Ranger Suarez at 185.
I'd rather have McKenzie Gore than Emanaga, for sure.
Trevor Rogers at 175.
I could see him getting up into that range.
I think like the 170 to 180 range.
Not sure he'll get all the way up to like 150 where you have him, Chris.
That just means you're probably going to draft a lot of McKenzie Gore.
But yeah, I think he's probably going to move up about like 20 to 30 picks in ADP based on this move.
Maybe higher.
Maybe I'm wrong about that.
But I could see moving him up my rankings a little bit as well.
I have McKenzie Gore right at SP 56.
He says SP 50 for me.
I could see getting him into that range.
Like I have Ranger Suarez at 49.
Tatsuya I'm a little worried about Gray at 50, Sunny Gray at 51.
I'm a little worried about Gray myself, so I probably won't have him.
But yeah, I could see moving McKenzie Gore up to like SP 51
and just being in a similar range with some of those other names that I mentioned earlier.
So looks like a good move overall here for McKenzie Gore.
Let's take a quick break.
And we'll talk about the return.
Five prospects headed to the Nationals.
We'll do that right after this.
Welcome back in Fantasy Baseball today.
An emergency edition, Mackenzie Gore traded over to the Texas Rangers for,
five prospects.
Let's talk about this return here, Chris.
Massive Hall for two years of control of McKenzie Gore.
The Nationals get Gavin Feene, who's an 18-year-old shortstop, third-based prospect.
He was the 12th overall pick in last year's draft, and I've seen a lot of dynasty people pretty
excited about Gavin Feene.
We have Devin Fitzgerald.
Very interestingly, his name is spelled last name F-I-T-Z-D-D-JARL.
Dash-F-Gerald, yeah.
Very interesting.
That's interesting, yeah.
20 years old, put up some nice numbers in the Complex League last year, but pretty far away.
Looks like he could, you know, be a...
The skill set looks like a fantasy viable one.
It's like batting average, power speed, so it could be an interesting player there.
Abamelik Ortiz, he's turning 24 in February.
Power seems legit.
There are questions about the hit tool.
Played 41 games at AAA, so it seems like he's close, could contribute for the nationals this season.
Alahandro Rosario was a great pitching prospect.
Turned out he needed Tommy John surgery last year.
Put it off all of last season and just got it like a few weeks ago in January of 2026.
So he is not going to be back until some point in 27, assuming we have a season.
And then there's Jeremy Cabrera, which is actually spelled with a Y, Jeremy Cabrera.
But 20 years old, there's power and speed, some questions about the hit tool there.
look Chris we are not like
prospects of bonds but what do you
think about the return here
for the Washington Nationals
yeah just looking at
baseball prospectus is my
prospect outlet
of choice and
they got their number two
their number three their number eight
their number 16 and number
18 prospect
that's a hall
I you know
the
the
Nationals have a little bit of experience with a quantity package that, you know, I mean,
it's wild to think about the Wandsoto trade and what they got and how it just didn't seem to do
anything for them.
And it keeps evolving too because they got James Wood and Abrams and Gore, but now they got all
of these players via the Wonsoto trade as well.
I think Harleen Susanna was in that trade as well, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. They nailed that one and turns out it didn't matter.
but they got five legit guys.
You know,
I don't know if all these guys are going to work out.
I think you would bet on it not happening.
Al-Hadre Rosario,
especially.
He just turned 24 a couple weeks ago,
and now he's going to miss the entire season.
So best case scenario,
you've got a 25-year-old who's never pitched a AA.
That's not a great sign,
but he's got phenomenal stuff.
I mean, people talk about him.
Like, if he was healthy,
he'd be one of the best pitching prospects in baseball.
baseball. So I love the dice roll, love getting five guys without necessarily sacrificing quality.
I think this is a great trade for the Washington Nationals. I hope that they have, you know,
this younger, more forward looking for an office that we talked about on yesterday's podcast,
I think, and just the whole coaching staff, everybody's super young, super bright.
Hopefully better days are ahead of them. And I think this has a lot of potential.
to be a win-win trade for everyone because I think Gore gets to slide into kind of the middle to
back end of that rotation with a lot less pressure, a much better situation, and hopefully
takes a big step forward. And there's a lot to like seemingly about the prospects that they got,
including, look, Gavin Feen, he is, he was born in 2007 in March. That sounds so weird.
Oh my. So he is 18 years old. He turns 19 in about,
a month and a half.
He got, they started him out at low A.
He made his pro debut at low A last season.
He wasn't great, but it wasn't like a total disaster.
He only got into, you know, 45 plate appearances.
So, but like, he's going to be at probably low A to start next season.
And he could move to high A after that.
So it's, by all accounts, a pretty advanced prospect for a high schooler.
And I think the nationals did very well.
here, despite being a guy who generally believes in McKenzie Gore. I think it was good for both
sides. Yeah, and for those who play in Dynasty leagues, if you have a first year player draft that's
coming up, I've consumed some FYPD content and Feen typically goes in like that 10 to 15 range.
So the Dynasty community seems pretty excited about him. Not that it's a great FYPD class this year,
but, you know, he goes decently high in some of those dynasty drafts that I've seen so far.
This could work out long term for the nationals.
I just need to make this abundantly clear.
I think they're going to be awful this upcoming season.
This is a really, really bad team for the Washington Nationals.
I mentioned Abamelik Ortiz could maybe make an impact at some point this season.
Rastor Resource has Luis Garcia playing first base for the nationals with Nassim Nunez playing second base.
Nunez, by the way, in the deepest of leagues, stole a lot of base.
bases in the minor, so just a name to
keep an eye on there. He's a very good
defensive player, too, if I'm remembering correctly.
So the Nationals updated
rotation, uh, Sands Gore.
Cade Cavali, Brad Lord,
Jake Irvin, Josiah Gray, and
Foster Griffin.
Those are five names.
So, yeah.
I'm, it's gonna be a rough one.
Yeah. Yeah. I'm
moderately interested in cave Cade
Cavali. We'll see what Josiah Gray has
coming back from Tommy John's surgery. Um,
Foster Griffin, I think, is coming back from Japan or Korea?
Yeah, Japan.
He was pretty good.
So we'll see.
But yeah, that team's going to be a mess.
The Rangers updated rotation looks much better, by the way.
Jacob deGrom, Nathan Avaldi, McKenzie Gore, Jack Leiter,
and roster resource has Jacob Lats in there.
It could be Kumar Rocker.
I think there's probably a battle in spring training to see who gets that spot.
But Jacob Latt's kind of an interesting picture from last year.
as well. We recorded our Rangers preview. I uploaded it. This trade happened. I took it down. I don't
know what to do. I'm in limbo. But Jacob Latz was the breakout pick for Sean McFarland who we had on that
episode. So I'll see if he can rerecord it. If he can't, probably just put it out the way it is.
But he did like Jacob Lats as a breakout. So for whatever that is worth. We are going to wrap
there for Chris. I am Frank. Thanks as always for tuning into fantasy baseball today.
