Well, fantasy becomes reality.
Now here's Frank Scott, Chris, and Adam.
Man, it is a fun time to be a Seattle Mariners fan.
Welcome in to the emergency edition of Fantasy Baseball today.
Frank Stanfield will join.
by Chris Towers, and we already knew prospect Jared Kelnick was set to debut on Thursday,
but he won't be alone. The cavalry is coming. Logan Gilbert, one of the top pitching prospects
in baseball, will also be called up by the Mariners on Thursday, according to Jeff Passon,
and is set to start against Cleveland. So Logan Gilbert, 24 years old, former first round pick
back in 2018, and our buddy, Chris Welsh, aka the Welsh, who used to host this podcast,
He's very close to prospects, that whole entire world.
He went as far as to say Gilbert might be the best starting pitcher in the minors.
The miners no more.
Chris, what are your thoughts on Logan Gilbert?
Is he a must add?
He's only 31% rostered on CBS right now.
Yeah.
I mean, granted, you probably don't need a ton of help at pitching right now, given the landscape.
But yeah, I think Logan Gilbert, if he's not the top pitching prospect in baseball,
he's certainly not far off.
He is, you know, I think when you compare him
to some of the other top pitching prospects,
like a McKenzie Gore,
you know, he may not have,
like, the wow stuff.
You know, it doesn't like,
it may not jump off the page the same way
some of the other guys do from reading the scattering reports,
but, you know, as a 22-year-old in 2019,
he threw 135 innings, 165 strikeouts,
33 walks.
And he did that while making the jump
one first professional season, so that's really impressive,
and got all the way to AA in his first professional season,
made nine starts there with 56 strikeouts and 50 innings.
So the scouting report on Logan Gilbert is a very advanced pitching prospect,
very polished.
There's no guarantees among pitchers.
There's no such thing as a high floor pitcher,
but he seems to be about as close as you can get in that regard.
and, you know, clearly just needed one start at AAA, five strikeouts in five innings, allowing one run.
And now he's here.
I definitely think he's a must add.
I don't think I would rank him in my top 50 right away, but that's mostly a result of how strong pitching is right now.
Like, I have Freddie Peralta number 48.
I wouldn't drop Freddie Peralta for Logan Gilbert.
I agree with you.
I've got Robbie Ray 53rd.
I don't think I would drop Robbie Ray for him,
but you know, you get a little lower and you've got like
Nathan Avaldi who's been,
eh, I would drop Patrick Corbyn for him.
Yeah.
So probably in that like 65 to 60 range,
I would drop Marco Gonzalez,
Armand Marquez.
If I don't have Framber Valdez in a,
an I L spot,
I would probably rather have Logan Gilbert at this point.
So yeah,
I think that's,
about the range that he settles in for me
before we see him pitch. We'll see
if he goes out there and
strikes out 10, well,
actually that wouldn't be that remarkable anymore.
I think Chris Bassett just did that last night, but you know what I mean.
We'll see what it looks like once he actually gets here.
Especially against Cleveland, Chris. Don't rule out a no-hitter.
As long as Logan Gilbert is actually in the game.
Yeah, the spot that I was eyeing in the rankings,
SP-64. So that would be just behind names like
Robbie Ray, Jameson, Jose Orkidie, and Wascar Eenoa.
So that one's a little bit questionable.
Enoa versus Logan Gilbert.
But just ahead of names, I would drop to Nelson Lamet.
I think we've gotten to that point.
He's only throwing two innings per start.
I would drop Lamette for Logan Gilbert.
Marquez, you mentioned, Patrick Corbyn, Dallas Keikle.
A few other questions I received.
Brady Singer, would you drop Brady Singer?
I would make that move.
Two-pitch pitcher.
Didn't look great against the Tigers last night for Brady's Singer.
How about this one, Chris?
Would you drop Adbert Alzali, who's pitched very well?
I think so just because Alzalai seems like the kind of pitcher
who is only going to throw five innings most starts,
the occasional six inning if he's really good.
I think Logan Gilbert can be better than that.
So I think I would do that.
And the other thing to keep in mind is Alisai's got a 4-5 ERA right now.
He was 295 last year.
a 3-5 ERA, maybe a 3-6-3-7 ERA, that's a little fringy.
Like, you're going to have to drop someone with an ERA below four
to pick up Logan Gilbert in a lot of leagues.
So, you know, that's just kind of the price of doing business at this point.
Yeah, it's the nature of the position,
which we've basically talked about all year, all week long,
how baseball is trending right now.
And there's a huge glob of like this mid-class starting pitcher
that's really overperforming right now.
So you're going to have to make some tough decisions.
Those were a few names that we would drop.
How about a few prospects, Chris?
Nate Pearson recently just got sent down.
I guess you wouldn't have a problem making that swap, right?
Nope, not at all.
How about Sixth O Sanchez, who is apparently targeting a return in June?
I got asked this question a few times on Twitter already.
I think I would make the move.
I'm looking at my rankings right now.
I did move Gilbert to 59th overall.
I have 6th to 57th, but,
But so my preference would be to hold on to him.
And maybe there's a little bit of, you know,
gambler's fallacy or whatever the term might be,
where I've already held on to Sixto Sanchez for so long
that it would feel stupid to drop him.
I would hope I have a pitcher with less potential.
But, you know, Gilbert probably isn't that much less talented
than Sixto Sanchez.
Yeah, and I agreed with your assessment of him.
He's not as flashy as a McKenzie Gore,
but it seems like just a clean prospect.
You know, I was reading a few scouting reports about him.
He's got two different breaking pitches, a curve and a slider that he commands very well.
He's got a change up.
He throws mid-90s.
He's six-foot-six.
He's just a huge pitcher on the mound as well.
So I think that he's just, he's very polished.
I think that's a good way to describe Logan Gilbert.
Let's just wrap up with some fab talk here, Chris.
Let's do it per 12-team points and Roto, and then we'll just talk about for deeper leagues.
12 team points league how much fab would you be willing to spend on gilbert um you know it's it's interesting
in a lot of my leagues it was like everyone went wild with their fab early in the season in the
last few weeks like nobody's gone for more than 5% of the total year-long budget um i would think
gilbert's going to change that and i'm looking in my tout wars team i think i'd probably go
20%
in like a 12 team league
yeah I think so
yeah
but I guess it does depend on what my need is
I think that would be the upside
you know the ceiling and in this league
I don't know how badly I need a starting pitcher
so maybe it'd be more like 15 yeah but yeah
all right so depending on your need it's 15 to 20
percent for Logan Gilbert and I think that's fair
in the podcast points league I picked up
Shane McClainahan a couple of weeks ago for 12% of the budget so
I do think that Gilbert is going to regularly go deeper into starts than someone like Baclanahan.
So I can get behind that.
How about if you play in a deeper league, Chris, like a 15-team Roto League?
Can you see spending like 25% of your budget?
I imagine you're going to have to go higher to get him there.
Yeah, I mean, I think you look at, you know, the remaining prospects left who are going to get called up.
The most exciting one would be Wander Franco.
He's almost certainly rostered in most 15-team leagues.
And I would guess a lot of the other high-end guys are as well.
If Gilbert is available in your 15-team league,
this is probably one of your last chances to really blow out the budget,
unless, I don't know, Severino or Sail or Cindergarde got dropped,
maybe they'll emerge as that guy,
maybe Sixthos Sanchez if he gets dropped.
But this is probably one of the last really, really big players who's available.
So, yeah, I think 25% would be,
totally worth it. And I think just in terms of pitching prospects, Chris,
Logan Gilbert, if he remains in the majors, that means he's pitching well. I think he's
going to have the biggest impact this year, even more so than McKenzie Gore. Everything I've
read about and heard from McKenzie Gore is that he continues to struggle with command,
control in the minors. He's got a lot to work on, and it seems like the Padres
just don't really want to rush him to the majors. So I do think this is, this will be the
best pitching prospect in redraft leagues that is called up this season. So go out there and be
aggressive with Logan Gilbert for Chris with his fancy new glasses, by the way. I am Frank
Stamphill. Thank you all for listening and watching this emergency edition of fantasy baseball today.
We'll actually be back later on. Bye-bye.
